December 27: National Leftovers Day: -- Repurposing remnants into delightful dishes not only reduces waste but transforms every meal into an environmental stewardship. While the date of those leftovers in the fridge might be a bit difficult to trace, the concept of leftovers probably can find its history all the way back to the beginning of time! Perhaps there weren't leftover green bean casseroles in ancient times, but certainly saving food for the next day is not a new concept. National Leftovers Day brings attention back to the benefits that come from being intentional about eating those leftovers. Holidays often come with their own set of extra leftovers, likely to do with the fact that the meals cooked for these days are often huge! National Leftovers Day is here to act as a reminder of the tasty treats that are just waiting patiently in the refrigerator! Aldi Scotland is responsible for launching National Leftovers Day in the UK in 2022, with the purpose of encouraging everyone to reduce waste and promote sustainability and reduce waste by eating up all of the food that remains after the Christmas holiday. In Australia, National Leftovers Day was started in 2009 by the Do Something organization and is celebrated on December 26 or Boxing Day, the day after Christmas. This day is certainly no burden because the food was so delicious the first time around, it's likely that the leftover turkey, ham, or goose, warmed up with mashed potatoes and gravy will be a delight to enjoy -- especially in a Rica-A-Roni Casserole, AKA "Crack Casserole"!

December 27: National Fruitcake Day: -- Across the United States, fruitcake lovers young and old, commemorate National Fruitcake Day each year on December 27th. Made with chopped candied or dried fruit, nuts, and spices and sometimes soaked in spirits, fruitcake has been a holiday gift-giving tradition for many years. Dating back to ancient Rome, one of the earliest known recipes lists pomegranate seeds, pine nuts, and raisins mixed into barley mash. Records indicate that in the Middle Ages, makers added honey, spices, and preserved fruits. Recipes for fruitcakes vary from country to country, depending on available ingredients and tradition. In the 16th century, two achievements crystallized to make fruitcakes more affordable and accessible. First, sugar from the American Colonies became abundant. Second, it was discovered that high concentrations of sugar could preserve fruits. These two actions resulted in excess candied fruit. Consequently, fruitcake making grew. Typically, Americans produce fruitcakes abundant in fruit and nuts. In America, mail-order fruitcake began in 1913. Charities often sell commercial fruitcakes from catalogs as a fundraising event. In 1935, the expression "nutty as a fruitcake" was coined. The phrase came about as a result of excess nuts some Southern bakeries added to their fruitcakes due to their access to cheap nuts. Most mass-produced fruitcakes in America are alcohol-free. Some traditional recipes include liqueurs or brandy. Bakers then complete the fruitcake by covering it with powdered sugar. Some fruitcake makers soaked their fruitcakes in brandy-soaked linens believing the cakes improved with age. To observe National Fruitcake Day, share a fruitcake story or recipe - or maybe share both! Invite someone to enjoy some fruitcake with you. No matter how you celebrate, use #NationalFruitcakeDay to post on social media.

December 27: Visit The Zoo Day: -- Although the origins of the day are unclear, we do know that the idea of the zoo stretches as far back as a couple of millennia. The word 'zoo' is, in fact, the shortest way to refer to a zoological park or garden. Zoos are typically home to a range of species and function as protective shelters for the animals housed within them. An early form of the zoo or zoological garden was called a 'menagerie'. It is said to have been much smaller than the more modern zoo. The first iterations of zoos were private collections and acted as a show of power. Excavators discovered remnants of a menagerie in Egypt, which they believe dates back to around 3500 B.C. Famous kings such as Alexander the Great of Greece, King Solomon of Israel, and King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia were known animal collectors from their respective times. Evidence of such zoos or collections of animals has also been found in places like China and Rome. The first 'modern' zoo was built in 1793 in Paris, France. This idea of the modern and public zoo appears to have become popular in the 18th century, during the Age of Enlightenment, when science became more of a central pillar to society. Individuals wished to study animals, to better understand their anatomy and behavior, among other things. The city of London also saw its first modern zoo being opened in 1828. Animals from the Tower of London menagerie were added to its collection in due course, with the zoo eventually opening to the public in 1847. The focus of early modern zoos was not on functioning as natural habitats for the species housed in them. Instead, they were more like museums of living animals kept in small display areas. Zoos today work towards educating and entertaining members of the public, while also furthering scientific research and promoting the conservation of species.

December 27: St. John's Day (The Feast Of St. John): -- Celebrates the author of the fourth gospel and the book of "Revelation." He is often shown alongside other gospel writers like Matthew, Mark, and Luke or sitting at the foot of the cross opposite Mary. The saint is represented by the eagle. He was also the subject of several Catholic narratives, like Giotto's frescoes in the Peruzzi Chapel at Santa Croce in Florence and Filippino Lippi. He is an important figure in Roman Catholicism. A saint's feast day is usually celebrated on the day of their death. However, St. John and the Virgin Mary are the only two saints whose birthdays are celebrated instead. St. John's Day was the feast day of St. John - the Baptist across Europe. The reason for it might be because the timing coincided with older pagan holidays celebrating the summer solstice. Today, the feast day is celebrated in countries such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. People celebrate the day by lighting bonfires. They also believed that during the summer solstice, the spirits roamed freely. Bonfires were lit to ward off evil spirits and protect themselves from harm. Eventually, people also started to believe that during the summer solstice, witches and dragons also needed to be kept away with bonfires. In the "Gospel of Luke," John the Baptist is described as a relative of Jesus who spearheaded the movement of baptism at the Jordan River. Theologians claim that John baptized Jesus by wading into the water with Jesus in the river. St. John is best known for the foretelling of the Messiah or the coming of Jesus. According to the "Gospel of Mark," John was imprisoned by Herod for criticizing Herod's incestuous marriage. John condemned Herod for marrying his niece, something that was strictly prohibited in the Old Testament Law. But it would be in Herod's wife where he'd tragically meet his death. Herod's wife asked for the head of John the Baptist, which was delivered to her on a plate.

December 27: International Day Of Epidemic Preparedness: -- Serves the purpose of creating awareness about epidemics in honor of the anniversary of birth of Louis Pasteur, French biologist, microbiologist and chemist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation and pasteurization. The truth is, the world has been infected with numerous epidemics in history. However, mankind still managed to survive by finding ways to curb the spread of viruses. But, don't you think a great number of lives can be saved if nations are already prepared for a deadly epidemic/pandemic to strike? If you believe awareness and preparedness are key, celebrate the day with great fervor and spread the message. Play your part in fighting any epidemic that might come our way! In late 2019, the coronavirus outbreak began in China. Numerous areas of the city were sealed as the infection rate began to rise and the body count increased. However, even though the news of the virus spread across the world, the authorities were unable to contain the disease. Within a few months, cases of COVID-19 emerged across the world and the death toll escalated. The virus, which was initially presumed to be the flu, was announced to be a pandemic that had impacted millions of lives across the world. Due to the pandemic, the holes in the healthcare systems of several countries were revealed as hospitals ran out of beds and ventilators. In fact, there was a point when hand sanitizers and surgical masks were also out of stock. However, after months of studying the pandemic, several health experts believe that COVID-19 could have been contained if the world was prepared. Keeping this in mind, the first-ever International Day of Epidemic Preparedness was held on December 27, 2020. The day was called for by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate the importance of the prevention of, preparedness for, and partnership against epidemics. This was deemed necessary since COVID-19 highlighted the importance of investing in systems to prevent, detect and respond to infectious disease outbreaks. "COVID-19 is a human tragedy. But it has also created a generational opportunity. An opportunity to build back a more equal and sustainable world," Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations said.

December 27: The Anniversary Of Benazir Bhutto's Death Day: -- December 27, 2007: Benazir Bhutto, Pakistani politician, stateswoman and beauty, first-ever female leader of a Muslim nation, 11th prime minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996 (b. June 21, 1953) #dies when a man standing 2-3 metres from the bulletproof car she had just exited from by its escape hatch fired three gunshots at her and detonated a suicide vest packed with ball bearings. The Salafi jihadist group Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility, although the involvement of the Pakistani Taliban and rogue elements of the intelligence services was widely suspected. She posthumously came to be regarded as an icon for women's rights due to her political success in a male-dominated society. That morning, Bhutto met had met with the Afghan secularist Muslim President Hamid Karzai. She then left for an afternoon speech she gave at a rally, in a park named Rawalpindi's Liaquat National Bagh, of the liberal and secularist politcal party she alternately chaired or co-chaired from the early 1980s until her assassination, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP). After leaving the rally, she opened the car's escape hatch, stood up to wave to the surrounding crowds that greeted her, and was assassinated as she left the vehicle.Reports differ as to whether she was hit by bullets or by shrapnel from the explosion. Twenty-two others also died. Bhutto was rushed to Rawalpindi General Hospital but was clinically dead on arrival and attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful. No autopsy was conducted, and the body was swiftly transported to Chaklala Air Base. The following day, she was buried next to her father in the Bhutto family mausoleum, Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, her family graveyard near Larkana, Sidh, Pakistan. Musharraf declared a three-day period of mourning, while PPP supporters rioted in various parts of Pakistan, leading to at least 50 deaths. Authorities claimed that the assassin had been a teenage boy from South Waziristan. They claimed to have proof that the attack had been masterminded by Baitullah Mehsud, leader of the Pakistani Taliban. The United States Central Intelligence Agency concurred that this was probable, although Mehsud denied the accusation. Mehsud nevertheless had a motive: he believed that Bhutto's pro-American and secularist agenda would undermine the Pakistani Taliban's control of South Waziristan and hinder the growth of Sunni Islamist radicalism. Al-Qaeda commander Mustafa Abu al-Yazid claimed responsibility for the assassination, declaring that "We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat [the] mujahideen." The PPP accused the government of a cover-up, with several PPP figures claiming that Bhutto had been killed by a sniper linked to the intelligence agencies. Within Pakistan, there was also public speculation that the attack might have been masterminded by India or the United States. Musharraf agreed to invite Britain's Scotland Yard to investigate the assassination, although its eventual report proved inconclusive. Requests for the body to be exhumed for an autopsy were rejected by Zardari. Benazir Bhuttoo was born at Pinto's Nursing Home in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan into a faimly of politically important, wealthy aristocratics of mixed Sindhi, Persian, and Kurdish parentage. She studied at Harvard University and the University of Oxford, where she was President of the Oxford Union. Her father, the PPP leader Zulfikar Bhutto, was elected prime minister on a socialist platform in 1973. She returned to Pakistan in 1977, shortly before her father was ousted in a military coup and executed. Bhutto and her mother Nusrat took control of the PPP and led the country's Movement for the Restoration of Democracy; Bhutto was repeatedly imprisoned by Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq's military government and then self-exiled to Britain in 1984. She returned in 1986 and-influenced by Thatcherite economics-transformed the PPP's platform from a socialist to a liberal one, before leading it to victory in the 1988 election. As prime minister, her attempts at reform were stifled by conservative and Islamist forces, including President Ghulam Ishaq Khan and the powerful military. Her administration was accused of corruption and nepotism and dismissed by Khan in 1990. Intelligence services rigged that year's election to ensure a victory for the conservative Islamic Democratic Alliance (IJI), at which point Bhutto became Leader of the Opposition. After the IJI government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was also dismissed on corruption charges, Bhutto led the PPP to victory in the 1993 elections. In her second term, she oversaw economic privatisation and attempts to advance women's rights. Her government was damaged by several controversies, including the assassination of her brother Murtaza, a failed 1995 coup d'etat, and a further bribery scandal involving her and her husband Asif Ali Zardari; in response, President Farooq Leghari dismissed her government. The PPP lost the 1997 election and in 1998 she went into self-exile, living between Dubai and London for the next decade. A widening corruption inquiry culminated in a 2003 conviction in a Swiss court. Following the United States-brokered negotiations with then president, general Pervez Musharraf, she returned to Pakistan in 2007 to compete in the 2008 elections; her platform emphasised civilian oversight of the military and opposition to growing Islamist violence. Bhutto was a controversial figure who remains divisive. She was often criticised as being politically inexperienced, was accused of being corrupt, and faced much opposition from Pakistan's Islamist lobby for her secularist and modernising agenda. In the early years of her career, she was nevertheless domestically popular and also attracted support from the international community, seen as a champion of democracy.

December 27, 1571: #BOTD: #HBD! Johannes Kepler, German astronomer, mathematician, and astrologer considered the father of modern astronomy (d. November 15, 1630) is #born in Wurttemberg, Germany. He is a key figure in the 17th-century scientific revolution, best known for his laws of planetary motion, and his books Astronomia nova, Harmonices Mundi, and Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae. These works also provided one of the foundations for Newton's theory of universal gravitation. Among many other discoveries, he discovered the elliptical (oval) shape of the orbits in which the earth and other planets travel around the sun at a speed that varies according to each planet's distance from the sun. Kepler was a mathematics teacher at a seminary school in Graz, where he became an associate of Prince Hans Ulrich Von Eggenberg. Later he became an assistant to the astronomer Tycho Brahe in Prague, and eventually the imperial mathematician to Emperor Rudolf II and his two successors Matthias and Ferdinand II. He also taught mathematics in Linz, and was an adviser to General Wallenstein. Additionally, he did fundamental work in the field of optics, invented an improved version of the refracting (or Keplerian) telescope, and was mentioned in the telescopic discoveries of his contemporary Galileo Galilei. Kepler lived in an era when there was no clear distinction between astronomy and astrology, but there was a strong division between astronomy (a branch of mathematics within the liberal arts) and physics (a branch of natural philosophy). Kepler also incorporated religious arguments and reasoning into his work, motivated by the religious conviction and belief that God had created the world according to an intelligible plan that is accessible through the natural light of reason. Kepler described his new astronomy as "celestial physics", as "an excursion into Aristotle's Metaphysics", and as "a supplement to Aristotle's On the Heavens", transforming the ancient tradition of physical cosmology by treating astronomy as part of a universal mathematical physics. Johannes Kepler died in Regensburg, Germany on a trip to collect interest on work he had done previously, aged 58. He was buried in a Protestant churchyard in Regensburg that was completely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.

December 27, 1657: Freedom Of Religion (Religious Liberty): The Jewish Diaspora: History Of The Jews In The United States: History Of The Jews In Colonial America: The Jewish Arrival In New Amsterdam: History Of The Jews In New York: Jews In New York City: The Flushing Remonstrance: -- A group of Dutch citizens who were affronted by the persecution of Quakers and the religious policies of Dutch Director-General of the colony of New Netherland, Peter Stuyvesant, sign The Flushing Remonstrance, which articulates for the first time in North American history that freedom of religion is a fundamental right; none of the signatories were Quakers. The Flushing Remonstrance is considered a forerunner to the United States Constitution's own provision of freedom of religion articulated in the Bill of Rights. The Remonstrance ends with the words: "The law of love, peace and liberty in the states extending to Jews, Turks and Egyptians, as they are considered sonnes of Adam, which is the glory of the outward state of Holland, soe love, peace and liberty, extending to all in Christ Jesus, condemns hatred, war and bondage. And because our Saviour sayeth it is impossible but that offences will come, but woe unto him by whom they cometh, our desire is not to offend one of his little ones, in whatsoever form, name or title hee appears in, whether Presbyterian, Independent, Baptist or Quaker, but shall be glad to see anything of God in any of them, desiring to doe unto all men as we desire all men should doe unto us, which is the true law both of Church and State; for our Saviour sayeth this is the law and the prophets. Therefore if any of these said persons come in love unto us, we cannot in conscience lay violent hands upon them, but give them free egresse and regresse unto our Town, and houses, as God shall persuade our consciences, for we are bounde by the law of God and man to doe good unto all men and evil to noe man. And this is according to the patent and charter of our Towne, given unto us in the name of the States General, which we are not willing to infringe, and violate, but shall houlde to our patent and shall remaine, your humble subjects, the inhabitants of Vlishing." The Flushing Remonstrance was a petition to Peter Stuyvesant (Dutch: Pieter Stuyvesant or Petrus Stuyvesant) (c. 1610 - August 1672), the last Dutch Director-General of the colony of New Netherland from 1647 until it was ceded provisionally to the English in 1664 (after which it was split into New York and New Jersey, with lesser territory becoming parts of other colonies, and later, states), in which some thirty residents of the small settlement of Vlissingen (known at the time in English as Vlishing, since historically known in English as Flushing), requested an exemption to his ban on Quaker worship. Vlissingen (Flushing) was originally settled by English people operating under a patent, issued by Governor Willem Kieft in 1645, granting them the same state of religious freedom existing in Holland, then the most tolerant of European countries. Peter Stuyvesant was a major figure in the early history of New York City; his name has been given to various landmarks and points of interest throughout the city, especially the New York City neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Stuyvesant Town, as well as Stuyvesant High School, etc.. Peter Stuyvesant's 1656 ordinance against illegal religious meetings had formally banned the practice of all religions outside of the Dutch Reformed Church, the established church of the Netherlands, in the colony. His often-derided decision flew against the approximately hundred-year development of religious tolerance in the Netherlands. During this time the country was revolting against Spanish rule, rebelling against an imposed Inquisition, attempting to form a national identity, and trying to unify Calvinist and Catholic provinces. At the same time, Stuyvesant also opposed Jewish arrival in New Amsterdam. On another front, the Stuyvesant family was broadly tolerant. Judith, Stuyvesant's wife, was a fierce advocate for New York's slaves, promoting the practice of baptism as a first step toward freedom. His policy met with resistance from some English settlers in the towns of Vlissingen (currently Flushing), Rustdorp (currently Jamaica, Queens), and "'s Gravesande" (sic) (currently Gravesend, Brooklyn), places where Quaker missions were sent. Stuyvesant's actions, however, also met with the support of other English settlers and magistrates who informed on those embracing unorthodox teachings and meeting in small and unsanctioned religious meetings of lay people called conventicles. Thus, Stuyvesant found himself drawn into the religious debates and bickering of the English community in the Atlantic colonies and debates in England which culminated in the Conventicle Act 1664 that likewise banned religious assemblies. This policy resulted in numerous acts of religious persecution and harassment. In 1656 William Wickenden, a Baptist minister from Rhode Island, was arrested by Dutch colonial authorities, jailed, fined, and exiled for baptizing Christians in Flushing. In the same year Robert Hodgson was arrested, tried, and sentenced to two years of manual labor with slaves for his preaching of Quakerism. In 1661, in the town of Rustdorp, Henry Townsend (Norwich) and Samuel Spicer were fined for holding Quaker conventicles and Townsend was banished as well. Stuyvesant sent three new magistrates, all Englishmen, and a half dozen soldiers to gather information on dissidents. The soldiers were billeted in the homes of the dissidents until they agreed to conform. In 1662, in 's-Gravesande, Samuel Spicer and his mother, Micha, along with John and Mary Tilton were imprisoned and later banished. They moved to Oyster Bay, then outside of the authority of New Netherland, and returned to their town after 1664 when the British took control of the colony. In response to the Remonstrance, Stuyvesant dismissed the local government and chose new Dutch replacements as leaders. Four who signed were arrested by order of Stuyvesant. Two immediately recanted, but the writer of the remonstrance, Edward Hart, and sheriff of Flushing Tobias Feake remained firm in their convictions. Both men were remanded to prison where they survived in isolation on rations of bread and water for over a month. After friends and family petitioned Stuyvesant on behalf of the elderly Hart, the clerk was released on penalty of banishment. Feake held out for a few more weeks, but eventually recanted and was pardoned after being fined and banned from holding public office. Stuyvesant asserted that he was not violating the signers' "freedom of conscience," only their right to worship outside of family prayer meetings. In addition, he proclaimed March 13, 1658 a Day of Prayer for the purpose of repenting from, incredibly, the sin of religious tolerance. Subsequently, John Bowne of the colony allowed Quakers to meet in his house. He was arrested in 1662 and brought before Stuyvesant. Unrepentant, Bowne was sentenced to banishment to Holland, though he was of English descent and spoke no Dutch. After several months in the foreign land, Bowne petitioned the directors of the Dutch West India Company. After a month of deliberation, the Dutch West India Company agreed to support Bowne, and advised Stuyvesant by a letter (1663) that he was to end religious persecution in the colony. One year later, in 1664, the colony fell to British control. The John Bowne House, built before 1662, still stands in historic preservation. The Quaker Meeting House in Flushing, built 1694, is now the oldest house of worship in continuous use in New York State. The Quaker Meeting House in Flushing, built in 1694 and located at 137-28 Norther Boulevard (NY-25A) at the terminus of Linden Place, is now the oldest house of worship in continuous use in New York State.

December 27, 1822: #BOTD: #HBD! Louis Pasteur, French biologist, microbiologist and chemist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation and pasteurization (d. September 28, 1895) is #born in Dole, France. He is remembered for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and prevention of diseases, and his discoveries have saved many lives ever since. He reduced mortality from puerperal fever, and created the first vaccines for rabies and anthrax. His medical discoveries provided direct support for the germ theory of disease and its application in clinical medicine. He is best known to the general public for his invention of the technique of treating milk and wine to stop bacterial contamination, a process now called pasteurization. He is regarded as one of the three main founders of bacteriology, together with Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch, and is popularly known as the "father of microbiology". Pasteur was responsible for disproving the doctrine of spontaneous generation. He performed experiments that showed that without contamination, microorganisms could not develop. Under the auspices of the French Academy of Sciences, he demonstrated that in sterilized and sealed flasks nothing ever developed, and in sterilized but open flasks microorganisms could grow. Although Pasteur was not the first to propose the germ theory, his experiments indicated its correctness and convinced most of Europe that it was true. Today, he is often regarded as one of the fathers of germ theory. Pasteur made significant discoveries in chemistry, most notably on the molecular basis for the asymmetry of certain crystals and racemization. Early in his career, his investigation of tartaric acid, a white, crystalline organic acid that occurs naturally in many fruits, most notably in grapes, but also in bananas, tamarinds, and citrus, resulted in the first resolution of what is now called optical isomers, ions or molecules with identical formulas but distinct structures. His work led the way to the current understanding of a fundamental principle in the structure of organic compounds. He was the director of the Pasteur Institute, established in 1887, until his death, and his body was interred in a vault beneath the institute. Although Pasteur made groundbreaking experiments, his reputation became associated with various controversies. Historical reassessment of his notebook revealed that he practiced deception to overcome his rivals. Louis Pasteur died in Marnes-la-Coquette near Paris, France from the long-term effects of a stroke and uremia, aged 72. He was given a state funeral and was buried in the Cathedral of Notre Dame, but his remains were reinterred in the Pasteur Institute in Paris, in a vault covered in depictions of his accomplishments in Byzantine mosaics.

December 27, 1901: #BOTD: #HBD! Marlene Dietrich, German-American actress, singer, sex symbol, cultural icon, anti-fascist activist and beauty who held both German and American citizenship (d. May 6, 1992) is #born Marie Magdalene Dietrich in Berlin, Germany. Throughout her unusually long career, which spanned from the 1910s to the 1980s, she maintained popularity by continually reinventing herself. In the 1920s in Berlin, Dietrich acted on the stage and in silent films. Her performance as Lola-Lola in The Blue Angel (1930) brought her international fame and resulted in a contract with Paramount Pictures. Dietrich starred in Hollywood films such as Morocco (1930), Shanghai Express (1932), and Desire (1936). She successfully traded on her glamorous persona and "exotic" looks, and became one of the highest-paid actresses of the era. Throughout World War II, she was a high-profile entertainer in the United States. Although she still made occasional films after the war, Dietrich spent most of the 1950s to the 1970s touring the world as a marquee live-show performer. Dietrich was noted for her humanitarian efforts during the war, housing German and French exiles, providing financial support and even advocating their US citizenship. For her work on improving morale on the front lines during the war, she received several honors from the United States, France, Belgium, and Israel. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Dietrich the ninth-greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema. Marlene Dietrich died of kidney failure at her flat in Paris, France at age 90. Her funeral was a requiem mass conducted at the Roman Catholic church of La Madeleine in Paris on May 14, 1992. Dietrich's funeral service was attended by approximately 1,500 mourners in the church itself - including ambassadors from Germany, Russia, the US, the UK, and other countries - with thousands more outside. Her closed coffin, draped in the French flag, rested beneath the altar and was adorned with a simple bouquet of white wildflowers and roses from the French President Francois Mitterrand. Three medals, including France's Legion d'honneur and the U.S. Medal of Freedom were displayed at the foot of the coffin, military style, for a ceremony symbolizing the sense of duty Dietrich embodied in her career as an actress, and in her personal fight against Nazism. The officiating priest remarked: "Everyone knew her life as an artist of film and song, and everyone knew her tough stands... She lived like a soldier and would like to be buried like a soldier". By coincidence, her picture was used in the Cannes Film Festival poster that year which was pasted up all over Paris. In her will, Dietrich expressed the wish to be buried in her birthplace Berlin, near her family. Her body was flown there to fulfill her wish on May 16, 1992. Her coffin was draped in an American flag befitting her status as an American. As her coffin traveled through Berlin, bystanders threw flowers onto it, a fitting tribute because Dietrich loved flowers, even saving the flowers thrown to her at the end of her performances for use in subsequent shows. Dietrich is interred at the Stadtischer Friedhof III, Schoneberg, close by the grave of her mother Josefine Von Losch, and near the house where she was born. On October 24, 1993, the main portion of Dietrich's estate (on which the U.S. institutions showed no interest), was sold to the Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek, where it became the core of the exhibition at the Filmmuseum Berlin. The collection includes: over 3,000 textile items from the 1920s to the 1990s, including film and stage costumes as well as over a thousand items from Dietrich's personal wardrobe; 15,000 photographs, by Sir Cecil Beaton, Horst P. Horst, George Hurrell, Lord Snowdon and Edward Steichen; 300,000 pages of documents, including correspondence with Burt Bacharach, Yul Brynner, Maurice Chevalier, Noel Coward, Jean Gabin, Ernest Hemingway, Karl Lagerfeld, Nancy and Ronald Reagan, Erich Maria Remarque, Josef Von Sternberg, Orson Welles and Billy Wilder; as well as other items like film posters and sound recordings. The Marlene Dietrich Collection was sold to the Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek for 5M USD by Dietrich's heirs. The contents of Dietrich's Manhattan apartment, along with other personal effects such as jewelry and items of clothing, were sold by public auction by Sotheby's in Los Angeles in November 1997. Her former apartment located at 993 Park Avenue was sold for 615K USD in 1998.

December 27, 1922: Aviation: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Military Aviation: The History Of Naval Aviation: -- The Japanese aircraft carrier Hosho ("Flying Phoenix") becomes the first purpose built aircraft carrier to be commissioned in the world. She participated in the Shanghai Incident in 1932 and in the opening stages of the Sino-Japanese War in late 1937. During those two conflicts, the carrier's aircraft supported Imperial Japanese Army ground operations and engaged in aerial combat with aircraft of the Nationalist Chinese Air Force. The small size of the ship and her assigned airgroups (usually around 15 aircraft) limited the effectiveness of her contributions to combat operations. As a result, the carrier was placed in reserve after her return to Japan from China and she became a training carrier in 1939. During World War II, Hosho participated in the Battle of Midway in June 1942 in a secondary role. After the battle, the carrier resumed her training role in Japanese home waters for the duration of the conflict and survived the war with only minor damage from air attacks. She was used as a repatriation transport after the war, making nine trips to bring some 40,000 Japanese soldiers and civilians to Japan from overseas locations. Hosho was scrapped in Japan beginning in 1946.

December 27, 1929: The Interwar Period (The Aftermath Of World War I, The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Soviet Union (The Union Of Soviet Socialist Republics, USSR): The History Of The Soviet Union: Mass Repression In The Soviet Union: Stalinism: Collectivization In The Soviet Union: Dekulakization: -- Soviet General Secretary Joseph Stalin orders the "liquidation of the kulaks as a class". Dekulakization (Russian: Raskulachivanie; Ukrainian: Rozkurkulennia) was the Soviet campaign of political repressions, including arrests, deportations, or executions of millions of kulaks (prosperous peasants) and their families in the 1929-1932 period of the first five-year plan. To facilitate the expropriations of farmland, the Soviet government portrayed kulaks as class enemies of the USSR. More than 1.8 million peasants were deported in 1930-1931. The campaign had the stated purpose of fighting counter-revolution and of building socialism in the countryside. This policy, carried out simultaneously with collectivization in the Soviet Union, effectively brought all agriculture and all the laborers in Soviet Russia under state control. Hunger, disease, and mass executions during dekulakization led to at least 530,000 to 600,000 deaths from 1929 to 1933, though higher estimates also exist, Soviet era expert Robert Conquest estimating in 1986 that 5 million people may have died. The results soon became known outside the Soviet Union.

December 27, 1932: Grand Openings: Theatre Grand Openings (Theater Grand Openings): Music Hall Openings: -- Radio City Music Hall, nicknamed "Showplace Of The Nation", opens in New York City. It is an entertainment venue located at 1260 Avenue of the Americas at Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It was for a time the leading tourist destination in the city. The venue is notable as the headquarters for the precision dance company, the Rockettes. Radio City Music Hall was built on a plot of land that was originally intended for a Metropolitan Opera House. The opera house plans were canceled in 1929, leading to the construction of Rockefeller Center. The new complex included two theaters, the "International Music Hall" and the Center Theatre, as part of the "Radio City" portion of Rockefeller Center. The 5,960-seat Music Hall was the larger of the two venues. It was largely successful until the 1970s, when declining patronage nearly drove the Music Hall to bankruptcy. Radio City Music Hall was designated a New York City Landmark in May 1978, and the Music Hall was restored and allowed to remain open. Radio City Music Hall was designed by Edward Durell Stone and Donald Deskey in the Art Deco style. One of the more notable parts of the Music Hall is its large auditorium, which was the world's largest when the Hall first opened. The Music Hall also contains a variety of art.

December 27, 1949: World War II: The Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Asiatic-Pacific Theater, The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Aftermath Of World War II: The Decolonisation Of Asia: Indonesia: The History Of Indonesia: The Indonesian National Revolution: -- The Netherlands officially recognizes Indonesian independence, bringing about the end of the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch transferred sovereignty of Indonesia to the new United States of Indonesia. The new nation retained a formal association with the Netherlands until 1954, when an independent Republic of Indonesia was formed. Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia. It consists of 13,677 islands along the equator between the Indian and Pacific oceans, and a population of over 150 million. The Indonesian National Revolution, or Indonesian War of Independence, was an armed conflict and diplomatic struggle between the Republic of Indonesia and the Dutch Empire and an internal social revolution during postwar and postcolonial Indonesia. It took place between Indonesia's Declaration Of Independence in 1945 and the Netherlands' recognition of Indonesia's independence at the end of 1949. The four-year struggle involved sporadic but bloody armed conflict, internal Indonesian political and communal upheavals, and two major international diplomatic interventions. Dutch military forces (and, for a while, the forces of the World War II Allies) were able to control the major towns, cities and industrial assets in Republican heartlands on Java and Sumatra but could not control the countryside. By 1949, international pressure on the Netherlands and the partial military stalemate became such that it recognised Indonesian independence. The revolution marked the end of the colonial administration of the Dutch East Indies, except for Netherlands New Guinea. It also significantly changed ethnic castes as well as reducing the power of many of the local rulers (raja). It did not significantly improve the economic or political fortune of the majority of the population, although a few Indonesians were able to gain a larger role in commerce.

December 27, 1831: Evolution: The Theory Of Evolution: The Voyages Of The HMS Beagle: The Second Voyage Of HMS Beagle: -- Charles Darwin set out from Plymouth, England, aboard the ship HMS Beagle on his five-year global scientific expedition. Darwin collected fossils and studied plants and animals, gradually beginning to doubt that many diverse species of living things had sprung into existence at one moment (creationism). In 1859, he published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, a work of scientific literature by Charles Darwin which is considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. The Second Voyage Of HMS Beagle (December 27, 1831 - October 2, 1836) was the second survey expedition of HMS Beagle under captain Robert FitzRoy, who had taken over command of the ship on its first voyage after the previous captain committed suicide. FitzRoy had already thought of the advantages of having an expert in geology on board, and sought a gentleman naturalist to accompany them as a supernumerary. At the age of 22, the graduate Charles Darwin hoped to see the tropics before becoming a parson, and accepted the opportunity. He was greatly influenced by reading Charles Lyell's Principles of Geology during the voyage. By the end of the expedition, Darwin had already made his name as a geologist and fossil collector, and the publication of his journal which became known as The Voyage of the Beagle gave him wide renown as a writer. Beagle sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, and then carried out detailed hydrographic surveys around the coasts of the southern part of South America, returning via Tahiti and Australia after having circumnavigated the Earth. While the expedition was originally planned to last two years, it lasted almost five. Darwin spent most of this time exploring on land: three years and three months on land, 18 months at sea. Early in the voyage he decided that he could write a book about geology, and he showed a gift for theorising. At Punta Alta in Argentina he made a major find of gigantic fossils of extinct mammals, then known from only a very few specimens. He ably collected and made detailed observations of plants and animals, with results that shook his belief that species were fixed and provided the basis for ideas which came to him when back in England, and led to his theory of evolution by natural selection.

December 27, 1923: #DOTD: #RIP: Gustave Eiffel (Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, ne Bonickhausen dit Eiffel), French architect and civil engineer, co-designer of the Eiffel Tower (b. December 15, 1832) #dies while listening to Beethoven's 5th symphony andante in his mansion on Rue Rabelais in Paris, France, aged 91. He is buried in the Eiffel family tomb in Levallois-Perret Cemetery in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, France; strictly speaking, it is just outside Paris in the arrondissement of Nanterre, in the Hauts-de-Seine department, in the Ile-de-France region. Gustave Eiffel was born Bonickhausen dit Eiffel in Dijon, Cote-d'Or, France, the first child of Catherine-Melanie (nee Moneuse) and Alexandre Bonickhausen dit Eiffel. He was a descendant of Jean-Rene Bonickhausen, who had emigrated from the German town of Marmagen and settled in Paris at the beginning of the 18th century. The family adopted the name Eiffel as a reference to the Eifel mountains in the region from which they had come. Although the family always used the name Eiffel, Gustave's name was registered at birth as Bonickhausen dit Eiffel, and was not formally changed to Eiffel until 1880. A graduate of the prestigious Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures of France, he made his name with various bridges for the French railway network, most famously the Garabit viaduct. He is best known for the world-famous Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris, and his contribution to building the Statue Of Liberty in New York. After his retirement from engineering, Eiffel focused on research into meteorology and aerodynamics, making significant contributions in both fields.

The Greater Poland Uprising Of 1918-1919 (Polish: Powstanie Wielkopolskie 1918-19 Roku; German: Grosspolnischer Aufstand) had a significant effect on the Treaty Of Versailles, which granted a reconstituted Second Polish Republic the area won by the Polish insurrectionists. The region had been part of the Kingdom Of Poland and then Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth before the 1793 Second Partition of Poland when it was annexed by the German Kingdom of Prussia. It had also, following the 1806 Greater Poland Uprising, been part of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807-1815), a French puppet state during the Napoleonic Wars.

December 27, 1981: #DOTD: #RIP: Hoagy Carmichael, American composer, singer, songwriter, pianist, bandleader and actor, one of the most successful of the Tin Pan Alley songwriters of the 1930s, and was among the first singer-songwriters in the age of mass media to utilize new communication technologies, such as television and the use of electronic microphones and sound recordings (b. November 22, 1899) #dies of a heart attack at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California at age 82. His remains are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana. Hoagy Carmichael was born Hoagland Howard Carmichaelin Bloomington, Indiana. Around 1922, Carmichael first met Leon "Bix" Beiderbecke, a cornetist and sometime pianist from Iowa who is one of the most influential soloists of jazz music. The two became friends and played music together, and around 1923, during a visit to Chicago, Beiderbecke introduced Carmichael to Louis Armstrong, with whom Carmichael would later collaborate, while Armstrong was playing with Chicago-based King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band. Carmichael was inspired by Beiderbecke's impressionistic and classical music ideas, and Carmichael's first recorded song, initially titled "Free Wheeling," was written for Beiderbecke, whose band, the Wolverines, recorded it as "Riverboat Shuffle" in 1924 for Gennett Records in Richmond, Indiana. The song became a jazz staple. Carmichael went on to compose several hundred songs, including fifty that achieved hit record status. He is best known for composing the music for "Stardust", "Georgia on My Mind" (lyrics by Stuart Gorrell), "The Nearness of You", and "Heart and Soul" (in collaboration with lyricist Frank Loesser), four of the most-recorded American songs of all time. He also collaborated with lyricist Johnny Mercer on "Lazybones" and "Skylark"; "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening," with lyrics by Mercer, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1951. Carmichael also appeared as a character actor and musical performer in fourteen motion pictures, hosted three musical-variety radio programs, performed on television, and wrote two autobiographies.

December 27, 1979: #DOTD: Hafizullah Amin, Afghan educator, communist politician during the cold war, Afghan People's Democratic Party General Secretary and 2nd President of Afghanistan (b. August 1, 1929) #dies when he is assassinated by the Soviets as part of Operation Storm-333 (Russian: Shtorm-333), a covert operation in which Soviet special forces stormed the Tajbeg Palace in Afghanistan with the deliberate intent of assassinating Amin. He is buried at The Tajbeg Palace Grounds. There are various accounts of how Amin died, and the exact details have never been confirmed, but it is believed he was killed either by a deliberate attack or died by a "random burst of fire", having ruled for slightly longer than three months. Tajbeg Palace was guarded by Afghan National Army. In the ensuing battle, Afghan armed forces suffered major losses. 30 Afghan palace guards and over 300 army guards were killed while 150 were captured. Amin's 11-year-old son died from shrapnel wounds. A total of 1,700 Afghan soldiers surrendered to Soviet troops and were taken as prisoners. The Soviets installed Babrak Karmal as Amin's successor. Several other government buildings were seized during the operation, including the Ministry of Interior building, the Internal Security (KHAD) building, and the General Staff building (Darul Aman Palace). Alpha Group veterans call this operation one of the most successful in the group's history. Declassified Russian documents show that the Soviet leadership believed that Hafizullah Amin had secret contacts with the US embassy and was probably a US agent. However, this assumption was later proven to be false. Hafizullah Amin was born in the Paghman district of Kabul and educated at Kabul University, after which he started his career as a teacher. After a few years in that occupation, he went to the United States to study. He would visit the United States a second time before moving permanently to Afghanistan, and starting his career in radical politics. He ran as a candidate in the 1965 parliamentary election but failed to secure a seat. Amin was the only Khalqist elected to parliament in the 1969 parliamentary election, thus increasing his standing within the party. He was one of the leading organizers of the Saur Revolution which overthrew the government of Mohammad Daoud Khan. In 1979 he named himself as president, prime minister, and chairman of the Khalq wing. He has been described as "ruthless" and a "radical Marxist". Amin's short-lived presidency was marked by controversies from beginning to end. He came to power by disposing of his predecessor Nur Muhammad Taraki and later ordering his death. Amin made attempts to win support from those who revolted against the communist regime which had begun under Taraki, but his government was unable to solve this problem. Many Afghans held Amin responsible for the regime's harshest measures, such as ordering thousands of executions. Thousands of people disappeared without trace during his time in office. The Soviet Union, which was dissatisfied with Amin, intervened in Afghanistan while invoking the Twenty-Year Treaty of Friendship between Afghanistan and the Soviet Union.

December 27, 2012: #DOTD: #RIP: Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr., United States Army General and engineer (b. August 22, 1934) #dies of complications following a bout of pneumonia at the age of 78. A memorial service was conducted on February 28, 2013, at the Cadet Chapel at West Point, which was attended by Colin Powell, Schwarzkopf's family, and others. Schwarzkopf was cremated and his ashes were buried near those of his father in the West Point Cemetery in a ceremony attended by cadets, military leaders, New York and New Jersey State Police Troopers. Among reactions to Schwarzkopf's death, George H. W. Bush said of him: "General Norm Schwarzkopf, to me, epitomized the 'duty, service, country' creed that has defended our freedom and seen this great Nation through our most trying international crises. More than that, he was a good and decent man and a dear friend." In a statement, President Barack Obama said "From his decorated service in Vietnam to the historic liberation of Kuwait and his leadership of United States Central Command, General Schwarzkopf stood tall for the country and Army he loved." In a letter, Secretary of the Army John McHugh and Army Chief Of Staff General Raymond T. Odierno wrote in a joint statement, "Our nation owes a great debt of gratitude to General Schwarzkopf and our Soldiers will hold a special place in their hearts for this great leader. While much will be written in coming days of his many accomplishments, his most lasting and important legacies are the tremendous soldiers he trained and led." He was born Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. in Trenton, New Jersey, to Ruth Alice (nee Bowman) Schwarzkopf and Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Sr., the first superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, and best known for his involvement in the Lindbergh kidnapping case. Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr served as Commander-In-Chief, United States Central Command, when he led all coalition forces in the Gulf War. His father, Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Sr., was a 1917 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and a veteran of World War I. His mother was a housewife from West Virginia who was distantly related to Thomas Jefferson. The senior Schwarzkopf later became the Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, where he worked as a lead investigator on the 1932 Lindbergh baby kidnapping case. In January 1952, the younger Schwarzkopf's birth certificate was amended to make his name "H. Norman Schwarzkopf", reportedly because his father detested his first name. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Schwarzkopf Jr. grew up in the United States and later in Iran. He was accepted by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army in 1956. After a number of initial training programs, Schwarzkopf interrupted a stint as an academy teacher, and served in the Vietnam War first as an adviser to the South Vietnamese Army and later as a battalion commander. Schwarzkopf was highly decorated in Vietnam, being awarded three Silver Star Medals, two Purple Hearts, and the Legion of Merit. Rising through the ranks after the conflict, he later commanded the U.S. 24th Infantry Division and was one of the commanders of the Invasion of Grenada in 1983. Assuming command of United States Central Command in 1988, Schwarzkopf was called on to respond to the Invasion Of Kuwait in 1990 by the forces of Iraq under Saddam Hussein. Initially tasked with defending Saudi Arabia from Iraqi aggression, Schwarzkopf's command eventually grew to an international force of over 750,000 troops. After diplomatic relations broke down, he planned and led Operation Desert Storm-an extended air campaign followed by a highly successful 100-hour ground offensive-which defeated the Iraqi Army and liberated Kuwait in early 1991. Schwarzkopf was presented with military honors. Schwarzkopf retired shortly after the end of the war and undertook a number of philanthropic ventures, only occasionally stepping into the political spotlight before his death from complications of pneumonia in late 2012. A hard-driving military commander with a strong temper, Schwarzkopf was considered an exceptional leader by many biographers and was noted for his abilities as a military diplomat and in dealing with the press.

December 27, 1906: #BOTD: #HBD! Oscar Levant, American concert pianist, composer, conductor, author, radio game show panelist, television talk show host, comedian and actor (d. August 14, 1972) is #born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Orthodox Jewish parents who had emigrated from Russia. He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for recordings featuring his piano performances. He was equally famous for his mordant (showing a sharp or critical quality; biting) character and witticisms, on the radio and later in movies and television, as for his music. Oscar Levant died, a lifelong heavy smoker and longtime pharmaceutical drug user, at his home in Beverly Hills, California, of a heart attack at age 65. He was discovered by his wife June when she called him from their bedroom to meet for an interview with Candice Bergen, who was then a photojournalist. According to Bergen's memoir titled Knock Wood, she had visited Levant on the previous day and Knock Wood includes one of her photographs from that occasion. In the book, Bergen revealed that Levant had asked her to return the next day to take more photographs, and she agreed. She drove over with her camera on the following day, not realizing he had died. Levant is interred in the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. An apocryphal story about Levant is the old joke that his epitaph reads, "I told them I was ill." In reality, the plaque on his crypt states his name, dates of birth and death, and nothing else. (It was in fact Spike Milligan who wanted his headstone to bear the words "I told you I was ill"; however, when he was buried at St Thomas' churchyard, the Chichester diocese refused to allow that epitaph.)

December 27, 1968: Splashdowns: The History Of Rocketry: The History Of Spaceflight: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Space Age: The Space Race: Space Programs Of The United States: Human Spaceflight Programs: The Discovery And Exploration Of The Solar System: Missions To The Moon: Project Apollo: Apollo 8: -- Apollo 8 splashes down in the Pacific Ocean, ending the first orbital manned mission to the Moon. It was the second manned spaceflight mission in the United States Apollo space program, and became the first manned spacecraft to leave Earth orbit, reach the Earth's Moon, orbit it and return safely to Earth. On December 21, they were launched from the Kennedy Space Center, placing its crew on a lunar trajectory for the first visit to another celestial body by humans. On December 24, the crew of Apollo 8, Commander Frank Borman and Command Module Pilot James Lovell entered into orbit around the Moon, becoming the first humans to do so. The astronauts orbited ten times over the course of 20 hours, during which the crew made a Christmas Eve television broadcast where they read the first 10 verses from the Book of Genesis. At the time, the broadcast was the most watched TV program ever. On December 25, Apollo 8 performs the very first successful Trans-Earth injection (TEI) maneuver, sending the crew and spacecraft on a trajectory back to Earth from Lunar orbit. The three-astronaut crew: Borman, Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders: became the first humans to: travel beyond low Earth orbit; see Earth as a whole planet; enter the gravity well of another celestial body (Earth's moon); orbit another celestial body (Earth's moon); directly see the far side of the Moon with their own eyes; witness an Earthrise; escape the gravity of another celestial body (Earth's moon); and re-enter the gravitational well of Earth. The 1968 mission, the third flight of the Saturn V rocket and that rocket's first crewed launch, was also the first human spaceflight launch from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, located adjacent to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Originally planned as a second Lunar Module/Command Module test in an elliptical medium Earth orbit in early 1969, the mission profile was changed in August 1968 to a more ambitious Command Module-only lunar orbital flight to be flown in December, because the Lunar Module was not yet ready to make its first flight. This meant Borman's crew was scheduled to fly two to three months sooner than originally planned, leaving them a shorter time for training and preparation, thus placing more demands than usual on their time and discipline. Apollo 8 took three days to travel to the Moon. Apollo 8's successful mission paved the way for Apollo 11 to fulfill U.S. President John F. Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. The Apollo 8 astronauts returned to Earth on December 27, 1968, when their spacecraft splashed down in the Northern Pacific Ocean. The crew was named Time magazine's "Men of the Year" for 1968 upon their return.

December 27, 1978: The History Of Spain: The Monarchy Of Spain (The Spanish Monarchy): The Spanish Transition To Democracy: -- Spanish King Juan Carlos I gives his official sanction to the Spanish Constitution that was created on Halloween October 31, 1978. The constitution was then published in the Boletin Oficial del Estado (the government gazette of Spain) on December 29, the date in which it became effective. This promulgation of the constitution marked the culmination of the Spanish Transition To Democracy from 40 years of fascist dictatorship after the death of Francisco Franco. Known in Spain as the Transition (Spanish: La Transicion) or the Spanish transition (Spanish: Transicion Espanola), it started on 20 November 1975, the day Francisco Franco died, who had established a dictatorship after the victory of the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. However, historians disagree on the exact date the transition was completed; some say it ended after the 1977 general election; while others place it later, when the 1978 Constitution was approved. Others suggest it ended with the failure of the 1981 attempted coup d'etat. At its latest, the Transition is said to have ended with the first peaceful transfer of executive power, after the victory of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in the 1982 general election.
