In the 17th century, only professional gingerbread bakers were allowed to make gingerbread, except at Christmas and Easter, when anyone was allowed to bake it. In Europe, gingerbread was sold in special shops and at seasonal markets that sold sweets and gingerbread shaped as hearts, stars, soldiers, babies, trumpets, swords, pistols, and animals. Gingerbread was especially sold outside churches on Sundays. Religious gingerbread reliefs were purchased for particular religious events such as Christmas and Lent. Decorated gingerbread was given as presents to adults and children or as a love token bought specifically for weddings. Gingerbread was also considered a form of popular art in Europe. Molds often displayed actual happenings by portraying new rulers, their children, spouses, and parties. Substantial mold collections are held at the Ethnographic Museum in Torun, Poland and the Bread Museum in Ulm, Germany. According to some food historians, the tradition of making gingerbread houses started in Germany in the early 1800s. The first gingerbread houses were the result of the well-known Grimm's fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel." After this story was published, German bakers began baking ornamented fairy-tale houses made from gingerbread. They were brought over to America by German immigrants and became popular during the Christmas season. December 12, 1893: #BOTD: #HBD! Edward G. Robinson, Romanian-American actor of stage, radio and screen during Hollywood's Golden Age (d. January 26, 1973) is #born Emanuel Goldenberg to a Yiddish-speaking Romanian Jewish family in Bucharest, the son of Sarah (nee Guttman) and Morris Goldenberg, a builder. After one of his brothers was attacked by an anti-semitic mob, the family decided to emigrate to the United States. Robinson arrived in New York City on February 21, 1904. "At Ellis Island I was born again," he wrote. "Life for me began when I was 10 years old." He grew up on the Lower East Side, and had his Bar Mitzvah at First Roumanian-American Congregation. He attended Townsend Harris High School and then the City College of New York, planning to become a criminal attorney. An interest in acting and performing in front of people led to him winning an American Academy of Dramatic Arts scholarship, after which he changed his name to Edward G. Robinson (the G. standing for his original surname). He served in the United States Navy during World War I, but was never sent overseas. Edward G. Robinson appeared in 30 Broadway plays and more than 100 films during a 50-year career and is best remembered for his tough-guy roles as gangsters in such films as Little Caesar and Key Largo. During the 1930s and 1940s, he was an outspoken public critic of fascism and Nazism, which were growing in strength in Europe leading up to World War II. His activism included contributing over 250K USD to more than 850 organizations involved in war relief, along with cultural, educational and religious groups. During the 1950s, he was called to testify at the House Un-American Activities Committee during the Red Scare, but was cleared of any deliberate Communist involvement when he claimed he was "duped" by several people whom he named (including screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, according to the official Congressional record, "Communist infiltration of Hollywood motion-picture industry"). Robinson's roles included an insurance investigator in the film noir Double Indemnity, Dathan (adversary of Moses) in The Ten Commandments, and his final performance in the science-fiction story Soylent Green. Robinson received an Academy Honorary Award for his work in the film industry, which was awarded two months after he died in 1973. He is ranked number 24 in the American Film Institute's list of the 25 greatest male stars of Classic American cinema. Edward G. Robinson died at Mount Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles of bladder cancer at the age of 79. Services were held at Temple Israel in Los Angeles where Charlton Heston delivered the eulogy. Over 1,500 friends of Robinson attended with another 500 crowded outside. His body was then flown to New York where it was entombed in a crypt in the family mausoleum at Beth-El Cemetery in Brooklyn. Among his pallbearers were Jack L. Warner, Hal B. Wallis, Mervyn LeRoy, George Burns, Sam Jaffe, and Frank Sinatra. December 12, 1901: Broadcasting: The History Of Broadcasting: Radio Broadcasting: The History Of Radio Broadcasting: -- Guglielmo Marconi receives the first transatlantic radio signal (the letter "S" [***] in Morse Code), at Signal Hill in St John's, Newfoundland (now part of Canada) in an abandoned fever and diphtheria hospital (which has since been destroyed by fire) using a 500-foot kite-supported antenna for reception. The transmission was sent by Thomas Barron from Marconi's Poldhu Wireless Station at Poldhu Point in Cornwall, England. The technology was a precursor to radio, television, satellites and the internet, with the earth station at Goonhilly Downs, Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station, a nearby example. At the turn of the 20th century, Marconi began investigating a means to signal across the Atlantic in order to compete with the transatlantic telegraph cables. The distance between the two points was about 2,200 miles. It was heralded as a great scientific advance, yet there also was - and continues to be - considerable scepticism about this claim. The exact wavelength used is not known, but it is fairly reliably determined to have been in the neighbourhood of 350 meters (frequency _ 850 kHz). The tests took place at a time of day during which the entire transatlantic path was in daylight. It is now known (although Marconi did not know then) that this was the worst possible choice. At this medium wavelength, long-distance transmission in the daytime is not possible because of heavy absorption of the skywave in the ionosphere. It was not a blind test; Marconi knew in advance to listen for a repetitive signal of three clicks, signifying the Morse code letter S. The clicks were reported to have been heard faintly and sporadically. There was no independent confirmation of the reported reception, and the transmissions were difficult to distinguish from atmospheric noise. A detailed technical review of Marconi's early transatlantic work appears in John S. Belrose's work of 1995. Feeling challenged by skeptics, Marconi prepared a better organised and documented test. In February 1902, the SS Philadelphia sailed west from Great Britain with Marconi aboard, carefully recording signals sent daily from the Poldhu station. The test results produced coherer-tape reception up to 1,550 miles (2,490 km), and audio reception up to 2,100 miles (3,400 km). The maximum distances were achieved at night, and these tests were the first to show that radio signals for medium wave and longwave transmissions travel much farther at night than in the day. During the daytime, signals had been received up to only about 700 miles (1,100 km), less than half of the distance claimed earlier at Newfoundland, where the transmissions had also taken place during the day. Because of this, Marconi had not fully confirmed the Newfoundland claims, although he did prove that radio signals could be sent for hundreds of kilometres, despite some scientists' belief that they were limited essentially to line-of-sight distances. Signal Hill is a hill which overlooks the city of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Mostly a National Historic Site, adjacent to it is the largely encaved museum of Johnson Geo Centre and its associated park. The highest point, Ladies' Lookout, above Cabot Tower, is 167 metres (548 ft) high. The community of The Battery lies on the slope of the hill overlooking the Harbour. Due to its strategic placement overlooking the Narrows, the only entrance to the harbor, fortifications date back to the mid 17th century. Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador has a campus on the lower slopes, in the former Battery Hotel, and is also now the owner of the Johnson Geo Centre. Poldhu is a small area in south Cornwall, England, UK, situated on the Lizard Peninsula; it comprises Poldhu Point and Poldhu Cove. Poldhu means "black pool" in Cornish. Poldhu lies on the coast of Mount's Bay and is in the northern part of the parish of Mullion; the churchtown is 2 kilometres to the south-east. On the north side of Poldhu Cove is the parish of Gunwalloe and the village of Porthleven is a further 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) to the north. Poldhu Point became the site of one of the main technological advances of the early twentieth century when, on December 12, 1901, a wireless signal was sent by Thomas Barron in Poldhu to St John's, Newfoundland, and received by Marconi. Sinatra weighed 13.5 pounds (6.1 kg) at birth and had to be delivered with the aid of forceps, which caused severe scarring to his left cheek, neck and ear, and perforated his eardrum - damage that remained for life. Due to his injuries at birth, his baptism at St. Francis Church in Hoboken was delayed until April 2, 1916. Francis Albert Sinatra was one of the most popular and influential musical artists of the 20th century. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Italian immigrants, Sinatra began his musical career in the swing era with bandleaders Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. Sinatra found success as a solo artist after he signed with Columbia Records in 1943, becoming the idol of the "bobby soxers". He released his debut album, The Voice of Frank Sinatra, in 1946. Sinatra's professional career had stalled by the early 1950s, and he turned to Las Vegas, where he became one of its best known residency performers as part of the Rat Pack. Initially set up in Germany in 1935, Lebensborn expanded into several occupied European countries with Germanic populations during the Second World War. It originally excluded children born from unions between common soldiers and foreign women, because there was no proof of racial purity on both sides. At the very moment this attack occurred, while the Battle Of Nanking was raging, there began the mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against the residents of Nanjing, which was then the capital of the Republic Of China; ultimately, soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army murdered Chinese civilians and disarmed combatants who numbered an estimated 40,000 to over 300,000. It is in the light of these collateral events that the attack on the USS Panay must be considered part of the general lawlessness of the Imperial Japanese Military involved in the Battle Of Nanking. Of the pilots who attacked the USS Panay, one of the two involved in sinking her was "punished" by a transfer to serve under the Japanese captain who later led the first air wave attacks on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, MitsuoFuchida, and it was with this pilot flying next to him that he led the attack. Connie Francis, American pop singer, actress, top-charting female vocalist of the late 1950s and early 1960s, and beauty, one of the best-selling music artists in history, exceeding 200 million records sold during her career (d. July 16, 2025) is #born Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero to an Italian-American family in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey, the first child of George and Ida (nee Ferrari-di Vito) Franconero, spending her first years in the Crown Heights, Brooklyn area (Utica Avenue/St. Marks Avenue) before the family moved to New Jersey. Growing up in an Italian-Jewish neighborhood, Francis became fluent in Yiddish, which led her later to record songs in Yiddish and Hebrew. In the fall of 1957, Francis enjoyed her first chart success with a duet single she had recorded with Marvin Rainwater: "The Majesty of Love", with "You, My Darlin' You" as the B-side, peaked at number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100. Eventually, the single sold over one million copies. However, her minor chart success came too late for her record label - Francis' recording contract consisted of ten solo singles and one duet single. Though success had finally seemed to come with "The Majesty of Love", Francis was informed by MGM Records that her contract would not be renewed after her last solo single. Francis considered a career in medicine and was about to accept a four-year scholarship offered at New York University. At what was to have been her final recording session for MGM on October 2, 1957 with Joe Lipman and his orchestra, she recorded a cover version of the 1923 song "Who's Sorry Now?" written by Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby. Francis has said that she recorded it at the insistence of her father, who was convinced it stood a chance of becoming a hit because it was a song adults already knew and that teenagers would dance to if it had a contemporary arrangement. Francis, who did not like the song and had been arguing about it with her father heatedly, delayed the recording of the two other songs during the session so much, that in her opinion, no time was left on the continuously running recording tape. Her father insisted, though, and when the recording "Who's Sorry Now?" was finished, only a few seconds were left on the tape. The single seemed to go unnoticed like all previous releases, just as Francis had predicted, but on January 1, 1958, it debuted on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, and on February 15 of that same year, Francis performed it on the first episode of The Saturday Night Beechnut Show, also hosted by Clark. By mid-year, over a million copies had been sold, and Francis was suddenly launched into worldwide stardom. In April 1958, "Who's Sorry Now?" reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart and number 4 in the US. For the next four years, Francis was voted the "Best Female Vocalist" by American Bandstand viewers. As Connie Francis explains at each of her concerts, she began searching for a new hit immediately after the success of "Who's Sorry Now?" since MGM Records had renewed her contract. After the relative failure of the follow-up singles "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry" (which stalled at No. 36) and "Heartaches" (failing to chart at all), Francis met Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, who sang a number of ballads they had written for her. After a few hours, Francis began writing in her diary while the songwriters played the last of their ballads. Afterwards, Francis told them that she considered their ballads too intellectual and sophisticated for the young generation and requested a more lively song. Greenfield urged Sedaka to sing a song they had written that morning with the Shepherd Sisters in mind. Sedaka protested that Francis would be insulted, but Greenfield said that since she hated all the other songs they had performed, they had nothing to lose. Sedaka then played "Stupid Cupid." When he finished, Francis announced that he had just played her new hit song. It went on to reach number 14 on the Billboard chart and was her second number 1 in the UK. The success of "Stupid Cupid" restored momentum to Francis' chart career, and she reached the U.S. top 40 an additional seven times during the remainder of the 1950s. She managed to churn out more hits by covering several older songs, such as "My Happiness" (number 2 on the Hot 100) and "Among My Souvenirs" (number 7), as well as performing her own original songs. In 1959, she gained two gold records for a double-sided hit: on the A-side, "Lipstick on Your Collar" (number 5), and on the B-side, "Frankie" (number 9). Although her chart success waned in the second half of the 1960s, Francis remained a top concert draw. Francis suffered a hip injury in early 2025 and subsequently required a wheelchair; she was undergoing stem cell therapy and had hopes of fully recovering as recently as May. In late June 2025, she stated she had been experiencing pelvic pain on her right side and was advised that it was due to a fracture. She said that she would need to rely on her wheelchair longer than anticipated while recovering. She was hospitalized in Florida on July 2 due to a recurrence of extreme pain. She underwent a series of tests and examinations while in intensive care and was later transferred to a private room. In a Facebook post, she speculated that her symptoms might be related to the fracture. On July 4, she reported feeling much better after a good night. She was later discharged from the hospital but soon began to deteriorate and lost consciousness for the final time on July 14. Francis died in Pompano Beach, Florida, on July 16, 2025, at the age of 87. Her longtime friend and publicist Ron Roberts announced her death the following day and later confirmed that she had been diagnosed with pneumonia the day before she died. By the time of her death, Francis had become one of the best-selling music artists in history, exceeding 200 million records sold during her career. December 12, 1979: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Afghan Conflict (The Afghan Crisis, The Instability In Afghanistan): The Soviet-Afghan War: -- The Soviet Politburo fatefully and tragically decides to invade Afghanistan, due to fears of an Iranian-style Islamist revolution and, as declassified Russian documents show, because the Soviet leadership believed that Afghan People's Democratic Party General Secretary and President of Afghanistan Hafizullah Amin had secret contacts with the US embassy and was probably a US agent, assumptions later proven false. Less than two weeks later, on December 24, 1979, the Soviet defence ministry, under leader Leonid Brezhnev, sent armoured columns of the Soviet 40th Army across the Russian-Afghan border into Afghanistan at Termez and Kushka, headed towards the Afghan cities of Kabul and Herat respectively, marking the start of the Soviet-Afghan War. Arriving in the Afghan capital of Kabul, they sent commandos to seize strategic installations, then they staged a coup (Operation Storm-333; Russian: Shtorm-333) that killed Afghan General Secretary Amin and installed Soviet loyalist Babrak Karmal from the rival faction Parcham. The deployment had been variously called either an "invasion" by Western media and the Mujahideen rebels, or a legitimate supporting intervention, on the basis of the Brezhnev Doctrine (a Soviet foreign policy that proclaimed any threat to socialist rule in any state of the Soviet bloc in Central and Eastern Europe was a threat to them all, and therefore justified the intervention of fellow socialist states) by the Soviet Union and the Afghan government of the Parchamite faction of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan. The causes of the conflict are found in the Saur Revolution, a 1978 coup wherein Afghanistan's communist party took power, initiating a series of radical modernization and land reforms throughout the country. The Soviet-Afghan War ultimately became a conflict wherein insurgent groups (known collectively as the Mujahideen), as well as smaller Maoist groups, fought a nine-year guerrilla war against the Soviet Army and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan government throughout the 1980s, mostly in the Afghan countryside. The Mujahideen were variously backed primarily by the United States, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China, and the United Kingdom; the conflict was a Cold War-era proxy war. December 12: National Ding-A-Ling Day: -- One of those uniquely American inventions, a sort of a two-fer holiday where you touch base (preferably by phone - hence the playful reference to "ding-a-ling") with friends or family you may have lost track of during the year. A day for reconnecting with loved ones, engaging in heartwarming conversations to strengthen bonds and share cherished moments. You also get a free pass to be just a little bit weird for the day! Although this probably sounds like a newly established holiday, surprisingly, National Ding-A-Ling Day actually has roots that can be traced back more than 50 years. It was in 1972 that a man named Frank Hyle from a suburb of Chicago, placed a free advertisement inviting folks to join the National Ding-a-Ling Club. With an original group of over 850 members, the purpose of this club was to call friends and relatives they hadn't heard from in awhile. And the date of this calling activity took place each year on December 12. One fun fact to go along with this history is that the National Ding-a-ling Club got its start in 1972. This was also the same year that Chuck Berry's song "My Ding-a-Ling" became a number one hit on the Billboard charts. It's an interesting connection to make! In return, belligerents should respect this impartiality. A country in a permanent state of neutrality will remain as such in all future wars. In 1815, the first country to declare its permanent status of neutrality was Switzerland and, as a result of this, thousands of refugees have found a safe haven in this country over the years. But Turkmenistan is the only state that is recognized as neutral by the United Nations. Resolution 50/80 was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 12, 1995, recognizing Turkmenistan as an entirely neutral state. The anniversary of this declaration was then established as the International Day of Neutrality on February 2, 2017. In order for countries to operate effectively while remaining independent, neutrality serves as an important concept for the United Nations to gain the cooperation and confidence of its member countries. August 17, 1995) is #born to a Jewish family in New York City. Koch grew up in Kingston, New York and was a graduate of St. Stephen's College (later renamed Bard College) and Columbia Law School. While practicing law in Hartsdale, New York, he began to write plays. Great Scott (1929), Give Us This Day (1933), and In Time to Come (1941) were produced on Broadway. His radio work in the 1930s as a writer for the CBS Mercury Theater of the Air included the Orson Welles radio drama The War Of The Worlds (1938), which caused nationwide panic among some listeners for its documentary-like portrayal of an invasion of spaceships from Mars. Warner of Warner Bros., Koch wrote the screenplay for Mission to Moscow (1943). The movie subsequently spawned controversy because of its positive portrayal of Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union. After the war, Koch was fired by Jack Warner after Koch was denounced as a Communist. He was then criticized by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) for his outspoken leftist political views. Koch was blacklisted by Hollywood in 1951. After being blacklisted, Koch moved with his wife Anne (an accomplished writer in her own right) and their family to Europe and eventually took up residence in the United Kingdom with other blacklisted writers where they wrote for five years for film and television (The Adventures of Robin Hood among them) under the pseudonyms "Peter Howard" and "Anne Rodney". In 1956, they returned to the United States and settled in Woodstock, New York, where he continued to write plays and books and remained actively committed to progressive political and social justice causes. George Montgomery was born George Montgomery Letz in Brady, in Pondera County, northern Montana near Great Falls. He is best remembered as an actor in Western films and television. Having been briefly engaged to Hedy Lamarr, he was a long-time husband of Dinah Shore, with whom he had two children. He was the youngest of 15 children of Ukrainian immigrant parents, from Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine. He was reared on a large ranch, where he learned to ride horses and work cattle as a part of daily life. Letz boxed as a heavyweight for a short while before enrolling in the University of Montana in Missoula. He was active in school athletics and majored in interior design, but he left after one year. Montgomery was more interested in a career in film than in a college education. Therefore, he left Montana for Hollywood. In 1939, he signed with 20th Century Fox, which billed him as George Montgomery. Montgomery was promoted to leading roles in a melodrama written by Dalton Trumbo, Accent on Love (1941). In the 1958-59 season, Montgomery starred in his own 26-episode NBC Western series, Cimarron City as Mayor Matt Rockford, with co-stars John Smith and Audrey Totter through his own production company Mont Productions. Montgomery claimed to have turned down the lead roles in the Western television series Gunsmoke and Wagon Train. In 1963, Montgomery's private life made headlines when his housekeeper was charged in a failed attempt to kill him. Allegedly suffering from a fanatical attraction to her employer, the woman planned to shoot Montgomery, then take her own life. As a boy, George Montgomery had developed excellent craftsmanship with wood. As an adult, he began building furniture, first for himself and then for a few friends. His skill was such that his hobby became a full-fledged cabinet-making business, in which he employed as many as 20 craftsmen. Montgomery oversaw the furniture business for more than 40 years, and expanded his interest to house design. He became involved with the building of 11 homes for friends and family. His artistic instincts included learning how to sculpt in bronze. Self-taught, he sculpted upwards of 50 bronze sculptures of subjects such as John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Gene Autry, Randolph Scott, and Ronald W. Reagan. He received renown in particular for a sculpture he did of Custer's Last Stand. (February 27, 1891) #dies in New York City of heart failure related to shingles, aged 80. He is interred in a mausoleum featuring a stained-glass vacuum tube in Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York. After his death, Sarnoff left behind an estate estimated to be worth over 1M USD. The majority of the estate went to his widow, Lizette Hermant Sarnoff, who received 300K USD, personal and household effects, and the Sarnoff home, located on 44 East 71st Street. David Sarnoff was born to a Jewish family in Uzlyany, a small town in Minsk Governorate, Russian Empire (today part of Belarus), the son of Abraham Sarnoff and Leah Privin. Abraham emigrated to the United States and raised funds to bring the family. Sarnoff spent much of his early childhood in a cheder (or yeshiva) studying and memorizing the Torah. He emigrated with his mother and three brothers and one sister to New York City in 1900, where he helped support his family by selling newspapers before and after his classes at the Educational Alliance in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In 1906 his father became incapacitated by tuberculosis, and at age 15 Sarnoff went to work to support the family. He had planned to pursue a full-time career in the newspaper business, but a chance encounter led to a position as an office boy at the Commercial Cable Company. When his superior refused him leave for Rosh Hashanah, he joined the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America on September 30, 1906, and started a career of over 60 years in electronic communications. Throughout most of his career he led the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) in various capacities from shortly after its founding in 1919 until his retirement in 1970. He ruled over an ever-growing telecommunications and media empire that included both RCA and NBC, and became one of the largest companies in the world. Named a Reserve Brigadier General of the Signal Corps in 1945, Sarnoff thereafter was widely known as "The General." Sarnoff is credited with Sarnoff's law, which states that the value of a broadcast network is proportional to the number of viewers. In 1911, he installed and operated the wireless equipment on a ship hunting seals off Newfoundland and Labrador, and used the technology to relay the first remote medical diagnosis from the ship's doctor to a radio operator at Belle Isle with an infected tooth. The following year, he led two other operators at the Wanamaker station in an effort to confirm the fate of the Titanic. Sarnoff later exaggerated his role as a sole hero who stayed by his telegraph key for three days to receive information on the Titanic's survivors, and this has largely become part of the HMS Titanic mythos. In fact, the event began on a Sunday, when the store Sarnoff was operating from would have been closed. Some researchers question whether Sarnoff was at the telegraph key at all. Sarnoff also demonstrated the first use of radio on a railroad line, the Lackawanna Railroad Company's link between Binghamton, New York, and Scranton, Pennsylvania; and permitted and observed Edwin Armstrong's demonstration of his regenerative receiver at the Marconi station at Belmar, New Jersey, a landmark event in the history of radio signal transmission. Sarnoff used H. J. Round's hydrogen arc transmitter to demonstrate the broadcast of music from the New York Wanamaker station. Sarnoff was instrumental in building and establishing the AM broadcasting radio business that became the preeminent public radio standard for the majority of the 20th century. In late November 1942, the Red Army completed Operation Uranus, encircling some 300,000 Axis personnel in and around the city of Stalingrad. To remedy the situation, the Luftwaffe attempted to supply German forces in Stalingrad through an air bridge. When the Luftwaffe proved incapable of carrying out its mission and it became obvious that a successful breakout could occur only if launched as early as possible, Manstein decided on a relief effort. The German offensive caught the Red Army by surprise and made large gains on the first day. The spearhead forces enjoyed air support and were able to defeat counterattacks by Soviet troops. By 13 December, Soviet resistance slowed the German advance considerably. As resistance and casualties increased, Manstein appealed to Hitler and to the commander of the German 6th Army, General Friedrich Paulus, to allow the 6th Army to break out of Stalingrad; both refused. The 4th Panzer Army continued its attempt to open a corridor to the 6th Army on 18-19 December, but was unable to do so without the aid of forces inside the Stalingrad pocket. Manstein called off the assault on 23 December and by Christmas Eve the 4th Panzer Army began to withdraw to its starting position. Starting as a dancer to a band at the Eden Concert nightclub, he eventually fronted his own band, which appeared on Jack Paar's Morning Show on American television from 1954 to 1956. Later he was dubbed "the rumba maestro" by the New York Daily Mirror. In 1970 he moved to Las Vegas, where he set up the jazz club "Cleopatra's Barge," inside Caesar's Palace. Two future Latin music stars, Tito Puente and Joe Loco, played with the Pupi Campo Orchestra in the late 1940s. Tito Puente was the orchestra's musical director for two years. In the 1970s, when Cachao moved to Las Vegas, he played in Pupi Campo's band, among others. Pupi Campo was married three times: to "Latin bombshell" actress Diosa Costello, to singer Betty Clooney (sister of Rosemary Clooney) and to Joette. November 5, 1931) #dies aged 76; on January 16, 2008, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office reported that Turner had died from a cocaine overdose. "The cause of death for Ike Turner is cocaine toxicity with other significant conditions, such as hypertensive cardiovascular disease and pulmonary emphysema". His funeral was held on December 21, 2007, at the City of Refuge Church in Gardena, California. Among those who spoke at the funeral were Little Richard, Solomon Burke and Phil Spector. The Kings of Rhythm played "Rocket 88" and "Proud Mary". Ike Turner was born Izear Luster Turner Jr. in Clarksdale, Mississippi to creole parents. When Turner applied for his first passport in the 1960s, he discovered that his name was registered as Ike Wister Turner. By then both of his parents were deceased, so he could not verify the origin of his name. Turner began playing piano and guitar as a child and then formed the Kings of Rhythm as a teenager. His first recording, "Rocket 88" (credited to Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats), is considered a contender for the distinction of first rock and roll song. During the 1950s, Turner also worked as a talent scout and producer for Sun Records and Modern Records. He was instrumental in the early careers of various blues musicians such as B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, and Bobby "Blue" Bland. In 1954, Turner relocated to East St. Louis where his Kings of Rhythm became one of the most renowned acts in Greater St. Louis. He later formed the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in 1960, which over the course of the decade became a soul/rock crossover success. Turner's cocaine addiction and legal troubles, together with accounts by Tina Turner of domestic violence (published in her 1986 autobiography I, Tina and the 1993 film adaptation What's Love Got to Do with It), impacted his career in the 1980s and 1990s. Addicted to cocaine for at least 15 years, Turner was convicted of drug offenses and served 18 months in prison. After his release in 1991, he remained drug-free until he relapsed in 2004, dying of a drug overdose in 2007. During the last decade of Turner's life, he revived his career as a frontman by returning to his blues roots. He released two award-winning albums, Here and Now and Risin with the Blues. He is also remembered for his take on the Dave Brubeck classic "Take Five", and for his 1996 version of "Soulful Strut". His remains were cremated, and the final disposition of his ashes are not publicly disclosed..The Rolling Stones played a tribute gig with Rocket 88 in February 1986 at London's 100 Club, and included a 30-second clip of Stewart playing the blues standard "Key To The Highway" at the end of their recently completed album, Dirty Work. In his 2010 autobiography Life, Keith Richards says: "Ian Stewart. I'm still working for him. To me The Rolling Stones is his band. Without his knowledge and organisation... we'd be nowhere." When the Stones were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989, they requested that Stewart's name be included. On April 19, 2011, pianist Ben Waters released an Ian Stewart tribute album, entitled Boogie 4 Stu, echoing the title title of the Led Zeppelin song "Boggie With Stu" which was a jam session they had with Ian, based around the Ritchie Valens song "Ooh My Head". One of the songs recorded for this album was Bob Dylan's "Watching The River Flow", played by The Rolling Stones featuring Bill Wyman on bass. This was the first time since 1992 that Wyman joined his former band. Stewart was honored by the Scottish Music Awards in 2017. December 12, 1943: #BOTD: #HBD! Dickey Betts, American guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known as cofounder and longtime member of The Allman Brothers Band (d. April 18, 2024) is #born in West Palm Beach, Florida and raised in Bradenton. He grew up in a musical family listening to traditional bluegrass, country music and Western swing. He started playing ukulele at the age of five and, as his hands got bigger, moved on to mandolin, banjo, and guitar. By the age of sixteen Betts was feeling the need for something "a little faster", and played in a series of rock bands on the Florida circuit, up the East Coast and into the Midwest. In 1967 he formed the Second Coming in Florida with Berry Oakley. According to its composer, Rick Derringer, the group called the Jokers referenced in "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" was one of Betts's early groups of that name. Dickey Betts was central to the group's greatest commercial success in the mid-1970s, and was the writer and vocalist on the Allmans' hit single "Ramblin' Man", the Allmans' highest-charting single, and wrote the song "Jessica", inspired by his young daughter Jessica. The Allman Brothers Band broke up and re-formed twice, always with Betts in the lineup, until he left the band in 2000. Starting in 1974, Betts also fronted his own bands, performing concerts and recording records. He released albums as Dickey Betts and Great Southern, the Dickey Betts Band, and under his own name. Dickey Betts died of cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at his home in Osprey, Florida, aged 80. Adapted from the controversial 1923 London and Broadway hit play by Leon Gordon, which was in turn adapted from the novel Hell's Playground by Ida Vera Simonton, its depiction of an interacial relationship caused great censorship difficulties for each of the productions; nevertheless, Hedy Lamarr's declaration "I am Tondelayo!" as a black Congolese female seductress became a meme of that day, one quickly forgotten, by chance and design, after World War II. White Cargo is a 1942 film directed by Richard Thorpe and starring Hedy Lamarr and Walter Pidgeon. Released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, it is based on the 1923 London and Broadway hit play by Leon Gordon, which was in turn adapted from the novel Hell's Playground by Ida Vera Simonton. The play had already been made into a British part-talkie, also titled White Cargo, with Maurice Evans in 1930. April 1, 1885) #dies at her 7 Princes Gate, Knightsbridge, London home of a heart attack aged 92; she had outlived her husband by almost 13 years, as well as three of her five children. She is buried with her husband and children (with the exception of Marigold who is interred in Kensal Green Cemetery in London) at St Martin's Church, Bladon, near Woodstock in Oxfordshire. Clementine Ogilvy Spencer-Churchill, Baroness Spencer-Churchill GBE was born Clementine Ogilvy Hozier on an April Fools Day in London, England. Clementine Churchill was the wife of Sir Winston Churchill and a life peer in her own right. The courtship between Clementine and Winston Churchill was a short one. Having met four years earlier, they were re-acquainted during a dinner party in 1908. There was an instant attraction. On their first brief encounter Winston had recognised Clementine's beauty and distinction; now, after an evening spent in her company, he realised that here was a girl of lively intelligence and great character. On 12 September 1908, at St. Margaret's, Westminster, Clementine married Winston Churchill, more than a decade older and already a seasoned Parliamentarian. They had five children: Diana (1909-1963); Randolph (1911-1968); Sarah (1914-1982); Marigold (1918-1921); and Mary (1922-2014). The Churchills' marriage was close and affectionate despite the stresses of public life. During World War I, Clementine Churchill organised canteens for munitions workers on behalf of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in the North East Metropolitan Area of London, for which she was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1918. As the wife of a politician who often took controversial stands, Clementine was used to being snubbed and treated rudely by the wives of other politicians. However, she could take only so much. Once, traveling with Lord Moyne and his guests, the party was listening to a BBC broadcast in which the speaker, a vehemently pro-appeasement politician, criticised Winston by name. Vera, Lady Broughton, a guest of Moyne, said "hear, hear" at the criticism of Churchill. Clementine waited for her host to offer a conciliatory word but, when none came, she stormed back to her cabin, wrote a note to Moyne, and packed her bags. Lady Broughton came and begged Clementine to stay, but she would accept no apologies for the insult to her husband. She went ashore and sailed for home the next morning. During World War II, she was Chairman of the Red Cross Aid to Russia Fund, the President of the Young Women's Christian Association War Time Appeal and the Chairman of Maternity Hospital for the Wives of Officers, Fulmer Chase. While touring Russia near the end of the war she was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. In 1946, she was appointed a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire, becoming Dame Clementine Churchill GBE. Later, she was awarded honorary degrees by the University of Glasgow and the University of Oxford and in 1976, by the University of Bristol. After more than 56 years of marriage, Clementine was widowed on 24 January 1965 when Winston died at the age of 90. Following Sir Winston's death, on 17 May 1965 she was created a life peer as Baroness Spencer-Churchill, of Chartwell in the County of Kent. She sat as a cross-bencher (an independent or minor party member, taking their name from the crossbenches, between and perpendicular to the government and opposition benches, where crossbenchers sit in the chamber), but her growing deafness precluded her taking a regular part in parliamentary life. In the final few years of her life, Lady Spencer-Churchill found that inflation and rising expenses made it difficult to make ends meet. In early 1977 she sent five paintings by her late husband to auction. The sale went much better than expected and rescued her from her financial difficulties. Only after her death was it discovered that she had destroyed the famous Graham Sutherland portrait of her husband because Winston had not liked it. Warwick ranks among the 40 biggest U.S. hit makers between 1955 and 1999, based on her chart history on Billboard's Hot 100 pop singles chart. She is the second-most charted female vocalist during the rock era (1955-1999). She is also one of the most-charted vocalists of all time, with 56 of her singles making the Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998 (12 of them Top Ten), and 80 singles in total - either solo or collaboratively - making the Hot 100, R & B and/or adult contemporary charts. Dionne ranks #74 on the Billboard Hot 100's "Greatest Artists of all time". May 7, 1923) #dies of a stroke suffered on December 4, 1985, while hailing a taxi on Madison Avenue in New York City, aged 62. Baxter remained on life support for eight days in New York's Lenox Hill Hospital, until family members agreed that brain function had ceased. Baxter is buried on the estate of Frank Lloyd Wright at the Unity Chapel cemetery in the town of Wyoming, south of Spring Green, Wisconsin. The cemetery is the private cemetery of the Lloyd Jones family, Baxter's mother's side of the family. Anne Baxter was born in Michigan City, Indiana. She won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, and was nominated for an Emmy. Baxter studied acting with Maria Ouspenskaya and had some stage experience before making her film debut in 20 Mule Team (1940). She became a contract player of 20th Century Fox and was loaned to RKO Pictures for the role of Lucy Morgan in Orson Welles' The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), one of her earlier films. In 1947, she won both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Sophie MacDonald in The Razor's Edge (1946). In 1951, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the title role in All About Eve (1950). The cause of death was pleural double pneumonia, complicated by emphysema due to cigarette smoking, malnutrition, and possibly a strain of the flu which was endemic at that time. Her last coherent words reportedly were a garbled request for "Codeine ... bourbon." She is buried in Saint Paul's Kent Churchyard in Chestertown, Maryland. Born Tallulah Brockman Bankhead in Huntsville, Alabama to the prominent Alabama Democratic party Brockman Bankhead political family, her grandfather and uncle were U.S. Senators and her father served as an 11-term member of Congress, the final two as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Tallulah's support of liberal causes such as civil rights broke with the tendency of the Southern Democrats to support a more typically aligned agenda, and she often opposed her own family publicly. Primarily an actress of the stage, Bankhead did have one hit film, Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat (1944), as well as a brief but successful career on radio. She later made appearances on television as well. In her personal life, Bankhead struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, smoked around 120 cigarettes per day, and was known for her promiscuous sex life with both men and women; Bankhead also openly talked about her vices. She supported foster children and helped families escape the Spanish Civil War and World War II. She was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1972, and the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1981.
