now known as The Mayflower Compact. The Puritans were fleeing from
religious persecution by King James I of England. The Mayflower
Compact established a rudimentary form of democracy, with each
member contributing to the welfare of the community. It was the
survival of the community, after the harsh winter of 1620-1621
that killed half of the Plymouth colonists, that was celebrated
the following year between September and November with a harvest
festival, following a good harvest, that established what is now

November 21, 1694: #BOTD: #HBD! Voltaire,
French Enlightenment writer, historian, playwright, philosopher
and Freemason, famous for his wit, his attacks on the established
Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole, and his advocacy of
freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and separation of church
and state (d. May 30. 1778) is #born Francois-Marie Arouet in
Paris, Kingdom of France. Voltaire was a versatile and prolific
writer, producing works in almost every literary form, including
plays, poems, novels, essays, and historical and scientific works.
He wrote more than 20,000 letters and more than 2,000 books and
pamphlets. He was an outspoken advocate of civil liberties,
despite the risk this placed him in under the strict censorship
laws of the time. As a satirical polemicist, he frequently made
use of his works to criticize intolerance, religious dogma, and
the French institutions of his day. He was an advocate of human
rights who published the landmark Philosophical Letters in 1734.
Other writings include; Zadig, The Century of Louis XIV, The
Russian Empire under Peter The Great, The Philosophical
Dictionary, and Essay on Morals. The accounts of his deathbed have
been numerous and varying, and it has not been possible to
establish the details of what precisely occurred. His enemies
related that he repented and accepted the last rites from a
Catholic priest, or that he died in agony of body and soul, while
his adherents told of his defiance to his last breath. According
to one story of his last words, when the priest urged him to
renounce Satan, he replied, "This is no time to make new
enemies." However, this appears to have originated from a
joke in a Massachusetts newspaper in 1856, and was only attributed
to Voltaire in the 1970s. Because of his well-known criticism of
the Church, which he had refused to retract before his death,
Voltaire was denied a Christian burial in Paris, but friends and
relations managed to bury his body secretly at the Abbey of
Scellieres in Champagne, where the brother of his cousin and
partner Marie Louise Mignot was abbe. His heart and brain were
embalmed separately. On July 11, 1791, the National Assembly of
France, regarding Voltaire as a forerunner of the French
Revolution, had his remains brought back to Paris and enshrined in
the Pantheon, where it resides today. An estimated million people
attended the procession, which stretched throughout Paris. There
was an elaborate ceremony, including music composed for the event
by Andre Gretry. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

November 21, 1877: Great Inventions: The
History Of Sound Recording: The Phonograph: -- Thomas Edison
announces his invention of the phonograph, a machine that can
record and play sound. Alexander Graham Bell's Volta Laboratory
made several improvements in the 1880s and introduced the
graphophone, including the use of wax-coated cardboard cylinders
and a cutting stylus that moved from side to side in a zigzag
groove around the record. In the 1890s, Emile Berliner initiated
the transition from phonograph cylinders to flat discs with a
spiral groove running from the periphery to near the center,
coining the term gramophone for disc record players, which is
predominantly used in many languages. Later improvements through
the years included modifications to the turntable and its drive
system, the stylus or needle, and the sound and equalization
systems. Whether called a phonograph, in its later forms a
gramophone (as a trademark since 1887, as a generic name in the UK
since 1910) or since the 1940s called a record player, it is a
device for the mechanical recording and reproduction of sound. The
sound vibration waveforms are recorded as corresponding physical
deviations of a spiral groove engraved, etched, incised, or
impressed into the surface of a rotating cylinder or disc, called
a "record". To recreate the sound, the surface is
similarly rotated while a playback stylus traces the groove and is
therefore vibrated by it, very faintly reproducing the recorded
sound. In early acoustic phonographs, the stylus vibrated a
diaphragm which produced sound waves which were coupled to the
open air through a flaring horn, or directly to the listener's
ears through stethoscope-type earphones. The disc phonograph
record was the dominant audio recording format throughout most of
the 20th century. In the 1980s, phonograph use on a standard
record player declined sharply due to the rise of the cassette
tape, compact disc, and other digital recording formats. However,
records are still a favorite format for some audiophiles, DJs and
turntablists (particularly in hip hop and electronic dance music),
and have undergone a revival since the 1990s. The original
recordings of musicians, which may have been recorded on tape or
digital methods, are sometimes re-issued on vinyl. On Sale @ 15%

which he introduces the most famous of all equations, the
mass-energy equivalence formula E = MC2. This paper is the fourth
of Einstein's four Annus Mirabilis Papers (from Latin annus
mirabilis, "extraordinary year") Albert Einstein
published in the Annalen Der Physik that year. These four articles
contributed substantially to the foundation of modern physics and
changed views on space, time, mass, and energy. The annus
mirabilis is often called the "miracle year" in English
or Wunderjahr in German. Special relativity (SR, also known as the
special theory of relativity or STR) is the generally accepted and
experimentally well-confirmed physical theory regarding the
relationship between space and time. In Albert Einstein's original
pedagogical treatment, it is based on two postulates: 1) The laws
of physics are invariant (i.e., identical) in all inertial systems
(i.e., non-accelerating frames of reference); and 2) The speed of
light in a vacuum is the same for all observers, regardless of the

Bloody Sunday (1920) (Irish: Domhnach Na Fola): -- In Dublin, the
IRA (Irish Republican Army) shoot and killed 14 British soldiers,
while 16 Irish civilians and three 3 republican prisoners are
killed by British soldiers. Bloody Sunday began with an Irish
Republican Army (IRA) operation, organised by Michael Collins, to
assassinate the 'Cairo Gang', a team of undercover British
intelligence agents working and living in Dublin. IRA members went
to a number of addresses and shot dead fourteen people. Later that
afternoon, members of the Auxiliary Division and RIC (Royal Irish
Constabulary) opened fire on the crowd at a Gaelic football match
in Croke Park, killing eleven civilians and wounding at least
sixty, three of which died later. That evening, three IRA suspects
being held in Dublin Castle were beaten and killed by their
captors, who claimed they were trying to escape. Overall, while
its events cost relatively few lives, Bloody Sunday was considered
a great victory for the IRA, as Collins' operation severely
damaged British intelligence, while the later reprisals did no
real damage to the guerrillas but increased support for the IRA
and the republican government under Eamon De Valera at home and

November 21, 1953: Anthropology:
Paleoanthropology: Human Evolution: Hoaxes: Hoaxes In Science:
Archaeological Forgeries: The Piltdown Man: -- The Natural History
Museum, London announces that the "Piltdown Man" skull,
initially believed to be one of the most important fossilized
hominid skulls ever found, is a hoax. The Piltdown Man was a
paleoanthropological fraud in which bone fragments were presented
as the fossilised remains of a previously unknown early human.
Although there were doubts about its authenticity virtually from
the beginning, the remains were still broadly accepted for many
years, and the falsity of the hoax was only definitively
demonstrated in 1953. An extensive scientific review in 2016
established that amateur archaeologist Charles Dawson was
responsible for the fraudulent evidence; during the period of time
when the identity of the forger was unknown, suspects included
Dawson, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Arthur Keith, Martin A. C.
Hinton, Horace de Vere Cole and Arthur Conan Doyle. In 1912,
Charles Dawson claimed that he had discovered the "missing
link" between ape and man. In February 1912, Dawson contacted
Arthur Smith Woodward, Keeper of Geology at the Natural History
Museum, stating he had found a section of a human-like skull in
Pleistocene gravel beds near Piltdown, East Sussex. That summer,
Dawson and Smith Woodward purportedly discovered more bones and
artifacts at the site, which they connected to the same
individual. These finds included a jawbone, more skull fragments,
a set of teeth, and primitive tools. Smith Woodward reconstructed
the skull fragments and hypothesised that they belonged to a human
ancestor from 500,000 years ago. The discovery was announced at a
Geological Society meeting and was given the Latin name
Eoanthropus dawsoni ("Dawson's dawn-man"). The
questionable significance of the assemblage remained the subject
of considerable controversy until it was conclusively exposed in
1953 as a forgery. It was found to have consisted of the altered
mandible and some teeth of an orangutan deliberately combined with
the cranium of a fully developed, though small-brained, modern
human. The Piltdown hoax is prominent for two reasons: the
attention it generated around the subject of human evolution, and
the length of time, 41 years, that elapsed from its alleged
initial discovery to its definitive exposure as a composite
forgery. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

The Firing Of Alan Freed: -- American disc jockey Alan Freed, who
had popularized the term "rock and roll" and music of
that style, is fired from WABC-AM radio for refusing to deny
allegations that he had participated in the payola scandal. By
January 25, 1960, The National Association of Broadcasters reacte
to the payola scandal by threatening fines for any disc jockeys
who accepted money for playing particular records. Prosecution for
payola in the 1950s was in part a reaction of the traditional
music establishment against newcomers. Hit radio was a threat to
the wages of song-pluggers. Radio hits also threatened old revenue
streams; for example, by the middle of the 1940s, three-quarters
of the records produced in the USA went into jukeboxes. Still, in
the 1950s, independent record companies or music publishers
frequently used payola to promote rock and roll on American radio;
it promoted cultural diversity and disc jockeys were less inclined
to indulge their own personal and racial biases. Alan Freed, a
disc jockey and early supporter of rock and roll (and also widely
credited for actually coining the term), had his career and
reputation greatly harmed by a payola scandal. Dick Clark's early
career was nearly derailed by a payola scandal, but he avoided
trouble by selling his stake in a record company and cooperating
with authorities. Attempts were made to link all payola with rock
and roll music. Alan Freed, American disc jockey Alan Freed, who
had popularized the term "rock and roll" and music of
that style (1921-1965) became internationally known for promoting
the mix of blues, country, and rhythm and blues music on the radio
in the United States and Europe under the name of rock and roll.

The FBI-King Suicide Letter: -- A package that contains the
FBI-King suicide letter and a tape recording allegedly of King's
sexual indiscretions is delivered to Coretta Scott King, wife of
Martin Luther King Jr., and later to King Jr. himself. Although
the letter was anonymously written, Martin Luther King Jr.
correctly suspected the FBI sent the package. The FBI-King Suicide
Letter, also known as The FBI-King Blackmail Package, was an
operation against King that was part of the FBI's COINTELPRO
program, a series of covert and illegal projects aimed at
surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, and disrupting domestic
American political organizations. FBI records show COINTELPRO
resources targeted groups and individuals the FBI deemed
subversive, sometimes rightly but sometimes wrongly, including: 1)
feminist organizations, 2) the Communist Party USA, 3)
anti-Vietnam War organizers, 4) activists of the civil rights
movement and Black Power movement (e.g. Martin Luther King Jr.,
the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party), 5)
environmentalist and animal rights organizations, 5) the American
Indian Movement (AIM), 6) Chicano and Mexican-American groups like
the Brown Berets and the United Farm Workers, 7) independence
movements (including Puerto Rican independence groups such as the
Young Lords and the Puerto Rican Socialist Party), 8) a variety of
organizations that were part of the broader New Left, and 9) white
supremacist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and the far-right
group National States' Rights Party. Coretta Scott King described
the FBI-King Blackmail Package tapes by saying "I couldn't
make much out of it, it was just a lot of mumbo jumbo." The
letter does not specify precisely what action it is urging King to
undertake; King understood the letter as advocating that he commit
suicide, although some have suggested that it was merely urging
him to decline the Nobel Peace Prize (which he won in 1964) or
step out of leadership. Historian Taylor Branch documents an
anonymous November 21, 1964 "suicide package" sent by
the FBI that contained audio recordings obtained through tapping
King's phone and placing bugs throughout various hotel rooms over
the past two years, and that was created two days after the
announcement of King's impending Nobel Peace Prize. The tape,
which was prepared by FBI audio technician John Matter, documented
a series of King's sexual indiscretions combined with a letter
telling him: "There is only one way out for you. You better
take it before your filthy, abnormal, fraudulent self is bared to
the nation". King was subsequently informed that the audio
would be released to the media if he did not acquiesce and commit
suicide prior to accepting his Nobel Peace Prize. When King
refused to satisfy their coercion tactics, FBI Associate Director,
Cartha D. DeLoach, commenced a media campaign offering the
surveillance transcript to various news organizations, including
Newsweek and Newsday. And even by 1969, as has been noted
elsewhere, "[FBI] efforts to 'expose' Martin Luther King Jr.
had not slackened even though King had been dead for a year. [The
Bureau] furnished ammunition to opponents that enabled attacks on
King's memory, and ... tried to block efforts to honor the slain
leader." On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

21 people and injure 182 others when bombs explode in two public

Army never officially admitted responsibility for the Birmingham
Pub Bombings, although a former senior officer of the organisation
confessed to their involvement in 2014. In 2017, one of the
alleged and admitted perpetrators, Michael Hayes, claimed that the
intention of the bombings had not been to harm civilians, and that
their deaths had been caused by an unintentional delay in
delivering an advance telephone warning to security services. The
Birmingham Six, six Irishmen arrested within hours of the blasts -
Hugh Callaghan, Patrick Joseph Hill, Gerard Hunter, Richard
McIlkenny, William Power and John Walker - were sentenced in 1975
to life imprisonment for the bombings, but subsequently acquitted.
They maintained their innocence and insisted police had coerced
them into signing false confessions through severe physical and
psychological abuse. After 16 years in prison, and a lengthy

In Islamabad: -- In the midst of The The Iran Hostage Crisis that
had begun 17 days before, Islamist students and locals, incited by
Iranian propaganda, stormed the U.S. embassy in Islamabad,
Pakistan and burned it down in a coordinated attack. The students
were motivated by a speech by Ayatollah Khomeini, disseminated by
Iranian radio propaganda, which falsely claimed that the United
States was responsible for the terrorist attack on the Masjid
al-Haram in Mecca. The embassy attack was planned and led largely
by Jamaat-e-Islami-aligned Islamist students at Quaid-i-Azam
University, and resulted in several American diplomats temporarily
being taken hostage by students who hoped to carry out show trials
and executions. Simultaneously, there were also large
demonstrations in Karachi, and the American cultural centers in
Lahore and Rawalpindi were gutted in similar burnings. Four
embassy staffers were killed in the attack: a Marine Security
Guard, a US Army warrant officer, and two Pakistani locals
employed by the embassy. US ambassador Arthur W. Hummel Jr. was
outside the embassy at the time of the attack, and escaped
unharmed. During the attack, US president Jimmy Carter warned
Pakistan's president Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq by phone that he was
responsible for the Americans' safety, however the embattled new
president proved reluctant to use force against the crowd. Two
student attackers were killed, while as many as 70 were injured in
the attack which lasted into the following morning by the time the
Pakistani Army moved to retake control of the premises. A

November 21: National Stuffing Day: --
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, November 21st is an
ideal day for National Stuffing Day! Since we are already thinking
about the delicious turkey stuffing that is a traditional part of
Thanksgiving dinner. Some cooks choose to stuff the bird with
crusts of bread, vegetables, herbs, and spices. Others prefer to
prepare a similar dish alongside the turkey using the drippings to
moisten the dish. Either way, each preparation is a personal
preference or family tradition. The difference is the first is
called a stuffing, but the latter is referred to as a dressing.
The usual turkey stuffing consists of bread cubes or crumbs
combined with onions, celery, salt, and pepper. Further spices and
herbs such as summer savory, sage, or poultry seasoning add flavor
and variety. Other recipes add sausage, hamburger, tofu, oysters,
egg, rice, apple, raisins, or other dried fruits. The first known
documented stuffing recipes appeared in the Roman cookbook,
Apicius "De Re Coquinaria." Most of the stuffing recipes
in this cookbook included vegetables, herbs and spices, nuts, and
spelt (an old cereal). Some recipes also included chopped liver
and other organ meat. In addition to stuffing the body cavity of
poultry and fish, various cuts of meat are often stuffed once
deboned and creating a pouch or cutting a slit in them. A few
examples of other meats frequently stuffed include pork chops,
meatloaf, meatballs, chicken breast, lamb chops, and beef
tenderloin. Stuffing isn't limited to the butcher block.
Vegetables are excellent containers for stuffing. Peppers,
tomatoes, zucchini, and cabbage are just a few of the shapely
veggies that make stuffing a fabulous part of your meals. Who
makes the best stuffing in your family? Some families debate this
question and never settle the question. That's why they end up
with multiple versions on the table at the big meal. No one
complains, though! How do you like your stuffing? Challenge
yourself to try a new recipe. See if you can get the family to
agree to breaking with tradition. Better get in the kitchen and
test those stuffing recipes before the big day. Give your stuffing
some holiday flair with this classic stuffing recipe. And use
#NationalStuffingDay to post on social media! ||||| Stuffing FAQ:
Q. What is the best bread to use when making stuffing? A. Stale
white bread is the best bread to make stuffing. Its fluffy
porousness absorbs all the unctuous juices and savory herbs
producing a stuffing that allows the ingredients to meld for
outstanding flavor./Q. Why does the bread need to be stale or dry?
A. Dry bread absorbs more flavor and holds up better when the
juices are added. Fresh bread will turn to mush when the wet
ingredients are added./Q. How can I quickly dry my bread to make
stuffing? A. If you forgot to dry the bread a few days before
making homemade stuffing, don't fret. There are a couple of ways
to get that bread ready. First, cube the bread so more surface
area is exposed to the air. Overnight: Place bread cubes in a
basket or on a baking sheet and cover with paper towels or
cheesecloth. Place in a warm area and leave out overnight. Oven
method: Heat oven to 250_F and place baking sheet in the oven
uncovered. Bake for 30-45 minutes.

November 21: National Gingerbread Cookie
Day: -- It's the perfect time to celebrate as the holiday season
is not too far away. Gingerbread cookies instantly make us feel
warm and cozy, they're tasty, and no amount of cookies will be
enough. Their rich flavor profile makes you want to keep going
back for more. Gingerbread cookies come in all shapes and sizes,
but gingerbread man cookies are the most popular ones. Gingerbread
has been around for centuries. The Ancient Greeks and Egyptians
often used gingerbread for ceremonial purposes. Later, in the 11th
century, crusaders brought ginger into Europe from the Middle
East. It was in the 16th century that gingerbread figural biscuits
made their first appearance. Queen Elizabeth I of England asked
her staff to make gingerbread figures that looked like the foreign
dignitaries and the other guests of honor and later presented them
in the likeness of some of her very important guests. In England,
gingerbread biscuits were also sold around the 17th century in
monasteries, pharmacies, and farmers' markets. In certain places
like Nuremberg and Pulsnitz in Germany, it is regarded as an art
form. The German version of gingerbread cookies is known as
Lebkuchen and has been around for over 400 years. These are often
heart-shaped and decorated with names and messages of love written
in icing. Gingerbread cookies are also highly regarded as art in
Torun in Poland, Tula in Russia, Pest in Hungary, Pardubice,
Prague in the Czech Republic, and Lyon in France. Later as years
went by, gingerbread tied with ribbons became a popular feature at
local fairs and were even exchanged as a token of love. Now
gingerbread cookies are popular in many western countries and
especially baked around the holiday season. You can make a house,
cake, biscuits, or simply cookies, and munch your way through it
during the holidays and soak in the warm and spicy flavors.

They encountered determined and intense resistance from the

later became the United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu
Islands. The United States established numerous military bases on
the Ryukyu Islands during its 27-year-long "trusteeship
rule". The Ryukyu Islands (Japanese: Ryukyu Retto) (also
known as the Nansei Islands [Japanese: Nansei Shoto; Okinawan:
Nansei Torishima, "Southwest Islands"] or The Ryukyu Arc
[Japanese: Ryukyu-Ko; Okinawan: Ruuchuu-Kiyumi]), are a chain of
Japanese islands that stretch southwest from Kyushu, the
third-largest and most southerly of Japan's four main islands, to
Taiwan. The Ryukyu Islands are divided into the Satsunan Islands
(Osumi, Tokara and Amami) and Okinawa Prefecture (Daito, Miyako,
Yaeyama, Senkaku, Okinawa, Sakishima Islands [further divided into
the Miyako and Yaeyama Islands], and Yonaguni as the westernmost).
The larger ones are mostly volcanic islands and the smaller mostly
coral. The largest is Okinawa Island. On May 15, 1972, the U.S.
government returned The Ryukyu Islands to Japan following the
signing of the 1971 Okinawa Reversion Agreement.

Sklar, American radio program director who, while at New York
City's WABC, was one of the originators of the Top 40 radio format
(d. June 22, 1992) is #born in Brooklyn NY where he grew up in its
Brighton Beach section. He graduated from New York University and
volunteered at WNYC radio as a writer. He then worked at WPAC in
Patchogue, New York, and in 1954 moved to WINS where he was
assistant program director. In 1960, Sklar became program director
at crosstown competitor WMGM. He moved to WABC in 1962 and became
program director there in 1963. Under his management, WABC became
the model for tight-playlist, teenager-targeted Top 40
programming, with a strong signal and famed disc jockeys such as
"Cousin Brucie" Bruce Morrow, Dan Ingram, Harry
Harrison, Chuck Leonard, and Ron Lundy. His relationship with some
of the DJs he oversaw was contentious at times. Scott Muni
departed from WABC after a number of confrontations with Sklar
over playlists including Sklar's refusal to remove Louis
Armstrong's version of the #1 smash hit "Hello, Dolly"
from the playlist at Muni's request. Under Sklar, the station's
ratings soared and was often the most listened to radio station in
North America through the mid-60s into the late 70s. In March
1977, Sklar was promoted to vice president of programming for
ABC's radio division. In 1984 he left ABC to start his own
consulting firm, Sklar Communications. His autobiography, Rocking
America: An Insider's Story: How the All-Hit Radio Stations Took
Over America (ISBN 978-0312687977), was published by St. Martin's
Press the same year. In an interview recorded in 1982, when WABC
switched from music to talk programming, Sklar said "Everything
has to end, that's life, WABC is _ like anything else it's part of
life, couldn't go on forever. But _ it was a wonderful thing _ it
was a one-of-a-kind _ I don't think there'll ever be another
station quite like that. I mean, the scope of the thing was so
huge, was so grand; everything that was done was on such a massive
scale. We gave out buttons, we gave out 14 million with the WABC
call letters and if we spot you we'll give you 25K USD. You know,
this stuff is _ it's just not done today._ We'll miss it. Radio
will go on and on forever. Radio's the most adaptable medium there
is, and _ the old WABC's place in radio will be remembered by
everyone who ever heard it, who ever grew up with it, it'll be
part of millions and millions-tens of millions of people's lives,
and certainly the lives of everyone in the radio business. Now we
just have to go on to new things, and I think we will." Sklar
continued to write articles and books as well as visiting various
colleges discussing the business of radio in general. He was also
an adjunct professor at St. John's University. Rick was married to
the former Sydelle Helfgott, who also served as vice president for
his company, Sklar Communications. They had two children: a son
Scott and a daughter Holly and three grandchildren: Emily,
Samantha and Jacob. Rick Sklar died of complications of cancer
surgery in Roosevelt Hospital, Manhattan, aged 62. Prior to his
death, Sklar had been an avid runner for more than ten years,
taking it up in the late 1970s. He ran his first New York City
Marathon in 1982, finishing 4 hours, 21 minutes, and 36 seconds;
coming in 642nd out of 857 who finished the race in his age group.
He began to have problems with his left foot, which necessitated
him quitting the sport by 1990. In June 1992, he entered Roosevelt
Hospital in Manhattan for a minor operation that would allow him
to run again. Although in good health, he died on the operating
table due to a lack of oxygen and other mistakes made by the
hospital staff. Rick Sklar was posthumously inducted into the
National Radio Hall of Fame the following year. His burial details
are not publicly available.

Miller, English actor, singer, songwriter, music hall performer
and comedian who was widely regarded as the greatest stand-up of
his generation, also known as The Cheeky Chappie (d. May 7, 1963)
is #born Thomas Henry Sargent in Hereford Street, Kemptown,
Brighton, Sussex, the second of the six children of James Sargent,
a labourer and Alice (nee West), a flower seller. He came from
humble beginnings. He left school at the age of 12. At the
outbreak of the First World War, he volunteered for the army.
During his time in the forces, he started a troop concert party.
On leaving the army, he took up work as a light comedian, dancer,
and singer. He toured extensively appearing in variety, revues and
by the early 1930s reached the top of the bill in the large music
halls including the London Palladium. He recorded many songs, some
which he wrote. He appeared frequently on radio, but television
did not really suit his style. He appeared and starred in 14
feature films. He was known for his flamboyant suits, his wicked
charm, and his risque jokes which often got him into trouble with
the censors. He made his last recording in January 1963 and died
four months later in his home at 25 Burlington Street, Brighton,
East Sussex, England, aged 68. In 1958 Miller suffered a heart
attack. After recovery he needed to take life easier. His last
West End appearance took place at the Palace Theatre in April 1959
and the last ever in variety in Folkestone in December 1960. He
continued to make records, his last in January 1963 with Lonnie
Donegan. Max Miller was cremated in the Downs Crematorium,
Brighton. A memorial tablet is mounted on a wall in the Garden of
Remembrance. With dwindling work in variety, brought about by the
increasing popularity of television, he commented, "When I'm
dead and gone, the game's finished."

Frye, American comedian, impressionist and political satirist (d.
January 24, 2011) is #born David Shapiro in New York City. David
Frye specialized in comic imitations of on notable Americans,
including famous political figures such as former U.S. Presidents
Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, Vice Presidents Hubert
Humphrey, Spiro Agnew, and Nelson Rockefeller, and Senator Bobby
Kennedy; film celebrities such as George C. Scott, Henry Fonda,
Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, Jack Nicholson, Jack Palance and Rod
Steiger; and media figures such as William F. Buckley Jr. and
Larry King. As eerily accurate and subtle as his impersonations
were, the comedic narratives spoken by those depicted by Frye were
outrageously a propos as well as politically savvy and au courant.
He is most famous for his impressions of Richard Nixon and for the
four comedy albums showcasing them: I Am The President (1969),
Radio Free Nixon (1971), Richard Nixon Superstar (1971) and
Richard Nixon: A Fantasy (1973). Marketing problems developed in
1973 for Frye's Richard Nixon: A Fantasy, which dealt with Nixon's
Watergate troubles, when all three network affiliates in New York
City (WNBC-TV, WABC-TV and WCBS-TV) rejected commercials promoting
the album, citing questions of taste. In addition, the Woolworth's
department store chain decided not to stock the record because, in
their words, "some of our customers might be offended."
Although his heyday was in the 1960s and early 1970s, when his
Nixon and Lyndon B. Johnson impersonations were definitive, Frye
continued to create masterful new impressions and evolve old ones.
His 1998 album Clinton: An Oral History featured riffs on Bill
Clinton, Al Gore, Pat Buchanan, and John McLaughlin, plus that of
an older Nixon (complete with pauses and phrasing more typical of
the ex-President as he sounded in the 1980s and 1990s). David Frye
died on January 24, 2011, at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada of
cardiopulmonary arrest according to the Clark County Coroner. He
is buried at Mount Ararat Cemetery in East Farmingdale, New York.

November 21, 1894: The Century Of
Humiliation (The Hundred Years Of National Humiliation)
(1838-1945): The Sino-Japanese Wars: The First Sino-Japanese War:
The Port Arthur Massacre (China) (Chinese: Lushun Da Tusha, "The
Lushun Massacre"): -- In retaliation for brutal Qing Chinese
war crimes committed against invading Japanese wounded and
prisoners of war three days previously, The Port Arthur Massacre
begins in the Chinese coastal city of Port Arthur (now Lushunkou
District of Dalian, Liaoning) as Port Arthur, China, falls to the
Japanese in a decisive victory. For three days (November 21-23,
1894), advance elements of the First Division of the Japanese
Second Army under the command of Japanese General Yamaji Motoharu
(1841-1897) killed somewhere between 2,600 Chinese civilians,
20,000 including Chinese soldiers. Reports of a massacre were
first published by Canadian journalist James Creelman of the New
York World, whose account was widely circulated within the United
States. In 1894, the State Department ordered its ambassador to
Japan, Edwin Dun, to conduct an independent investigation of
Creelman's reports. After a series of battles on the Liaodong
Peninsula, the First Division of the Japanese Second Army, led by
General Yamaji, drew up around Port Arthur in late November. By
November 18, the Japanese movement down the peninsula was
temporarily frustrated and returned to find that their abandoned
wounded troops had been severely mutilated, with hands and feet
cut off, while others had been burned alive. The city was
evacuated with residents fleeing westward by land or sea into
China. The Qing government placed bounties on prisoners of war, or
their heads or other body parts; during the Sino-Japanese War the
bounty was 50 taels. Some Chinese soldiers had mutilated several
Japanese soldiers' dead bodies and displayed them at the entrance
of the city, infuriating the Japanese. Several vowed revenge,
including Lieutenant Kijiro Nanbu. After only token resistance,
the city fell to Japanese troops late on the morning of 21
November. What followed was a massacre of the remaining
inhabitants of Port Arthur by the Japanese troops. Japanese troops
entered Port Arthur at about 2:00 p.m. Upon seeing the mutilated
remains of their fallen comrades, they took to killing those who
remained in the town. Several accounts of the events were recorded
by members of the Japanese forces, such as the diary of Makio
Okabe of the Japanese 1st Division: "As we entered the town
of Port Arthur, we saw the head of a Japanese soldier displayed on
a wooden stake. This filled us with rage and a desire to crush any
Chinese soldier. Anyone we saw in the town, we killed. The streets
were filled with corpses, so many they blocked our way. We killed
people in their homes; by and large, there wasn't a single house
without from three to six dead. Blood was flowing and the smell
was awful. We sent out search parties. We shot some, hacked at
others. The Chinese troops just dropped their arms and fled.
Firing and slashing, it was unbounded joy. At this time, our
artillery troops were at the rear, giving three cheers [banzai]
for the emperor." Thomas Cowan, correspondent for The Times,
described what he saw in a private letter: "Thursday, Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday were spent by the soldiery in murder and
pillage from dawn to dark, in mutilation, in every conceivable
kind of nameless atrocity, until the town became a ghastly Inferno
to be remembered with a fearsome shudder until one's dying day. I
saw corpses of women and children, three or four in the streets,
more in the water ... Bodies of men strewed the streets in
hundreds, perhaps thousands, for we could not count - some with
not a limb unsevered, some with heads hacked, cross-cut, and split
lengthwise, some ripped open, not by chance but with careful
precision, down and across, disembowelled and dismembered, with
occasionally a dagger or bayonet thrust in the private parts. I
saw groups of prisoners tied together in a bunch with their hands
behind their backs, riddled with bullets for five minutes and then
hewn to pieces. I saw a junk stranded on the beach, filled with
fugitives of either sex and of all ages, struck by volley after
volley until - I can say no more." In 1948, the Chinese
Communist Party built a cemetery, Wanzhong Mu (Wanzhong Tomb) and
marked the total deaths to be 20,000, which include soldiers
killed in action and fleeing soldiers disguised as civilians. The
20,000 figure became the orthodox figure in Chinese communist
sources. Creelman asserted up to 60,000 were killed, with only 36
spared, and even some late 20th century Japanese sources repeat
the figure of 60,000. Stewart Lone discredited Creelman's claim,
citing "the entire city population was not massacred,
however, is suggested by the speed with which Port Arthur's
streets again filled after the Japanese occupation: had the
civilian population been literally decimated or destroyed, it is
unlikely that others would have ventured to trade and work under
Japanese occupation." The Japanese press generally avoided
reporting on the massacre, or dismissed it, as when the Jiyu
Shinbun called allegations "an invidious desire to detract
from the glory of the Japanese Army". The Shin Choya accused
Westerners of exaggerating the extent of the atrocities, and of
hypocrisy in light of the atrocities they had committed throughout
the East, stating that "the history of savage nations that
have come in contact with Christian Occidentals is all but written
in blood". Some questioned Creelman's reliability, and a
rumour spread that he left for Shanghai after the fall of Port
Arthur to work for the Chinese government. The Japan Weekly Mail,
on the other hand, castigated the Japanese army in several
articles. Attempts to launch an inquiry met resistance from those
who wanted it covered up; Japanese Foreign Minister Mutsu
Munemitsu announced an inquiry that resulted in no punishments.
Domestic instability kept the Chinese government under pressure to
conceal the defeat, rather than castigate the Japanese for the
atrocities. The China Gazette reported on the attempted cover-up:
"Telegraphic notices have been sent ... all over the empire
by the officials saying that a wicked report has been set on foot
by the enemy that they have captured Port Arthur, but it was
utterly untrue, the place being garrisoned by 30,000 brave Chinese
soldiers who would never give it up to the Japanese." As late
as a month later, the China Gazette reported the defeat remained
unknown even to many government officials. The pro-Japanese
North-China Herald attempted to defend the perpetrators of the
massacre by proposing "The circumstances were such as might
have taxed the control of any invading force." The incident
strained the delicate foreign relations Japan had been dealing
with. The war itself hurt Japan's relations with Britain, and
threatened to hurt Japan's renegotiation of treaties with the US.
The incident coloured Western perceptions of Japan as barbarians
under a thin veil of civilization. These perceptions contributed
to anti-Japanese sentiments in North America in the early 20th
century, which would continue through World War II. The First
Sino-Japanese War (July 25 1894 - April 17, 1895) was a war fought
between the Qing dynasty of China and the Empire Of Japan
primarily for influence over Joseon, a Korean dynastic kingdom
that lasted for approximately five centuries.

November 21, 2013: #DOTD: Ton That Dinh,
Vietnamese general who served in the Army of the Republic of
Vietnam (ARVN), best known as one of the key figures in the
November 1963 coup that led to the arrest and assassination of Ngo
Dinh Diem, the first president of the Republic of Vietnam,
commonly known as South Vietnam (b. November 20, 1926) #dies aged
87 at Kindred Hospital Santa Ana in Santa Ana, California where he
had been treated for several weeks. His funeral was conducted in
accordance with Buddhist tradition. His burial details are not
publicly disclosed. Ton That Dinh was born in the central
highlands resort town of Da Lat on November 20, 1926, into the Ton
That family of Hue that were relatives of the Nguyen dynasty.
Lieutenant General Ton That Dinh was a favorite of the ruling Ngo
family, and received rapid promotions ahead of officers who were
regarded as more capable. He converted to Roman Catholicism to
curry favor with Diem and headed the military wing of the Can Lao
party, a secret Catholic organization that maintained the Ngos'
grip on power. At the age of 32, Dinh became the youngest ever
ARVN general and the commander of the II Corps, but he was
regarded as a dangerous, egotistical, and impetuous figure with a
weakness for alcohol and partying. In 1962, Dinh, whom Diem
regarded as one of his most loyal officers, was appointed
commander of the III Corps that oversaw the region surrounding the
capital Saigon, making him important to the prospects of any coup.
In late 1963, as Diem became increasingly unpopular, Dinh's
colleagues recruited him into a coup plot by playing on his ego
and pitting him against Diem. Diem and his brother and chief
advisor Ngo Dinh Nhu were aware of the plot but did not know of
Dinh's involvement. Nhu planned a fake coup of his own in an
attempt to trap his opponents and strengthen the family's regime.
Dinh was placed in charge of the fake coup and sabotaged it. On
November 1 the rebels' actual coup proceeded and the Ngo brothers
were deposed and executed. After the coup, Dinh became one of the
12 members of the Military Revolutionary Council (MRC), but this
lasted only three months before a coup by General Nguyen Khanh.
Dinh and his colleagues were put under house arrest by Khanh and
falsely accused of promoting a neutralist plot. The subsequent
military trial collapsed. The generals were convicted of "lax
morality", but were eventually allowed to resume their
military service, albeit in meaningless desk jobs. Following
Khanh's exile by another group of generals, Dinh was appointed to
command the I Corps in 1966 and ordered to put down the Buddhist
Uprising, but Prime Minister Nguyen Cao Ky disapproved of his
conciliatory policies. Ky launched a successful surprise attack
against Dinh, who fled, but was later captured and briefly
imprisoned by Ky. After his release, Dinh worked in the media and
was elected to the Senate in 1967. He served in the upper house
until the fall of Saigon in April 1975, when he fled Vietnam.

November 21, 1967: The Aftermath Of World
War II: The Cold War: The Cold War In Asia: The Indochina Wars:
The Vietnam War (The Second Indochina War, The Vietnam Conflict,
The Resistance War Against America): The United States In The
Vietnam War: -- In his November 21, 1967 address to the National
Press Club, General William Westmoreland assures his audience that
"We have reached an important point where the end begins to
come into view." He cited a list of problems plaguing the
North Vietnamese and Viet Cong, including an inability to recruit.
And lest his fundamental optimism be missed, he ended his speech
by invoking his goal to reach Phase IV of the war, when the
communists would be on the run: "I am absolutely certain that
whereas in 1965 the enemy was winning, today he is certainly
losing. We are making progress. We know you want an honorable and
early transition to the fourth and last phase. So do your sons and
so do I. It lies within our grasp - the enemy's hopes are
bankrupt." Westmoreland knew that he had put the best face on
the war. He later wrote, "I permitted myself the most
optimistic appraisal of the way the war was going that I had yet
made." Some of his fellow generals worried he had been too
optimistic-and too willing to serve LBJ's political objectives. As
Army Chief Of Staff General Harold K. Johnson put it, "Westys
trip has gone extremely well, and I only hope that he has not dug
a hole for himself with regard to his prognostications. The
platform of false prophets is crowded." General Johnson
turned out to be prescient. Just ten weeks after Westmoreland's
National Press Club speech, the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong
launched the Tet Offensive. What Americans saw on television and
read in the newspapers looked nothing like the rosy picture
Westmoreland had painted. While U.S. and South Vietnamese forces
ultimately turned the tide and inflicted punishing losses on the
North Vietnamese and Viet Cong, in political terms everything had
changed. The end was not in sight, and no one knew when it would
be. On March 22, 1968, Johnson announced that Westmoreland would
be leaving Vietnam to take up the post of Army Chief Of Staff.
Nine days later, LBJ surprised by the nation by saying he would
not seek re-election. U.S. troops would fight in Vietnam for
another five years.

The Vietnam War (The Second Indochina War, The Vietnam Conflict,
The Resistance War Against America): The United States In The
Vietnam War: Aftermath Of The Vietnam War: U.S. Prisoners Of War
During The Vietnam War: Operation Ivory Coast: -- A joint United
States Air Force and Army team raids the Son Tay prisoner-of-war
camp in an attempt to free American prisoners of war thought to be
held there. Operation Ivory Coast was a mission conducted by
United States Special Operations Forces and other American
military elements to rescue U.S. prisoners of war during the
Vietnam War. It was also the first joint military operation in
United States history conducted under the direct control of the
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Of Staff. The specially selected
raiders extensively trained and rehearsed the operation at Eglin
Air Force Base, Florida, while planning and intelligence gathering
continued from May 25 to November 20. 1970. On 21 November 1970, a
joint United States Air Force and United States Army force
commanded by Air Force Brigadier General LeRoy J. Manor and Army
Colonel Arthur D. "Bull" Simons landed 56 U.S. Army
Special Forces soldiers by helicopter at the Son Tay
prisoner-of-war camp, which was located 23 miles (37 km) west of
Hanoi, North Vietnam. The objective of the operation was the
recovery of 61 American prisoners of war thought to be held at the
camp. It was found during the raid that the camp contained no
prisoners as they had previously been moved to another camp.
Despite the absence of prisoners, the raid was executed with a
high degree of success, incurring only two wounded and the loss of
two aircraft, one of which had been part of the plan from the
start. Criticism of intelligence failures to determine that the
camp was empty of U.S. POWs, both public and within the
administration of President Richard Nixon, led to a major
reorganization of the United States intelligence community a year
later.

Iran-Iraq War: Iran-United States Relations: The Iran-Contra
Affair (The Iran-Contra Scandal): -- National Security Council
member Colonel Oliver North and his secretary Fawn Hall start to
shred documents allegedly implicating them in the Iran-Contra
Affair. Over two and a half years later, on July 5, 1989: Oliver
North was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gerhard A. Gesell to a
three-year suspended prison term, two years probation, 150K USD in
fines and 1,200 hours community service. His convictions are later
overturned. The Iran-Contra Affair, also referred to as Irangate,
Contragate or the Iran-Contra scandal, was a political scandal in
the United States that occurred during the second term of the
Reagan Administration. Senior administration officials secretly
facilitated the sale of arms to Iran, which was the subject of an
arms embargo. They hoped, thereby, to fund the Contras in
Nicaragua while at the same time negotiating the release of
several U.S. hostages. Under the Boland Amendment, further funding
of the Contras by the government had been prohibited by Congress.

General Motors plants in 50 cities to back up worker demands for a
30-percent raise. In the Aftermath Of World War II, American
workers responded to a steadily rising cost of living by striking
for long-deferred pay raises and deferred labor grievances. The
International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace, and
Agricultural Implement Workers of America, better known as the
United Auto Workers (UAW), is an American labor union that
represents workers in the United States (including Puerto Rico)
and Canada. It was founded as part of the Congress of Industrial
Organizations (CIO) in the 1930s and grew rapidly from 1936 to the
1950s. The union played a major role in the liberal wing of the
Democratic Party under the leadership of Walter Reuther (president
1946-1970). It was known for gaining high wages and pensions for
auto workers, but it was unable to unionize auto plants built by
foreign-based car makers in the South after the 1970s, and it went
into a steady decline in membership; reasons for this included
increased automation, decreased use of labor, movements of
manufacturing (including reaction to NAFTA), and increased
globalization. UAW members in the 21st century work in industries
including autos and auto parts, health care, casino gambling, and
higher education. The union is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan.
It has more than 391,000 active members and more than 580,000
retired members in over 600 local unions, and holds 1,150
contracts with some 1,600 employers.

his movies -- from Animal House and Caddyshack to Ghostbusters and
Groundhog Day -- we didn't just laugh until it hurt. We questioned
authority. We identified with the outsider. We rooted for the
underdog. And through it all, we never lost our faith in happy
endings." He ended his statement by saying he hoped Ramis
"received total consciousness", in reference to a line
from Caddyshack.
