November 10: World Immunization Day: -- An annual celebration to spread awareness about the benefits of getting vaccinated and how it can prevent a plethora of diseases in the long run. Failure to get immunized will only end up generating expensive medical bills due to a disease that could have been easily prevented with a low-tech and cost-effective vaccine shot. Vaccines also help to eradicate a pandemic like COVID-19 that has been infecting millions of people over the past two years. During World Immunization Day, it is critical to educate people about the importance of getting vaccinated. The tradition of immunization dates back thousands of years. As early as the 11th century, Buddhist monks in China used to drink snake venom to attain immunity to snake bites and would also smear a tear in their skin with the cowpox virus to get immunity to smallpox. Edward Jenner is deemed to be the founder of vaccinology. In 1796, he inoculated a 13 year-old-boy with vaccinia virus (cowpox) and showed how to attain immunity to smallpox. The first smallpox vaccine was developed in 1796. Following this, the smallpox vaccination was widely used around the world throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, resulting in the universal elimination of smallpox in 1979. In 1897, another doctor, Louis Pasteur, worked with the cholera virus and was able to inoculate humans with the inactivated anthrax vaccine. As a result, cholera vaccination was developed. The 20th century saw a great increase in the field of vaccine research and development. Numerous people were gaining immunity to diseases that were once life-threatening. Methods for growing viruses in the laboratory led to rapid discoveries and innovations, like the development of the polio vaccine. Researchers also developed vaccines for other diseases that affect children such as measles, mumps, and rubella. Even though immunization programs have been shown to have considerable health benefits, a wave of legal proceedings surrounding vaccines began, resulting in a decrease in profits for vaccine manufacturers, ultimately leading to a decline in the number of companies producing vaccines. This anti-vaccine sentiment and decline in vaccine manufacturing was stopped partially due to the implementation of the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program in the U.S. in 1986. However, it was not able to completely eradicate people's mentality because anti-vaccination individuals still linger in vast numbers around the world. November 10: National Civic Pride Day: -- A day to inspire everyone to promote the dynamic communities they live in. Civic pride belongs to the people who are at the heart of the city they live in. It brings communities together and encourages everyone to feel a sense of pride by creating and maintaining a healthy city or town. Today, we want to inspire everyone to get involved in their community and show support by improving the place you live and work. Why is civic pride important? The importance of civic pride means every community member feels a sense of pride for where they live. The people who live in a community are the same people who help their hometowns become better places to live. Businesses, schools, public service agencies, and community members all contribute to the efforts of making their community thrive. These contribution efforts are called civic pride. How can I support civic pride? Supporting civic pride is easy to do. In fact, most people participate in civic pride and don't realize it. Participating in civic pride is essential for any community member. It builds trust between members in the community and in office, keeps dialog open about key issues, and creates better relationships between all residents. Civic pride enables citizens to influence local laws and policies that effect their community; helps promote and learn local values of businesses and residents; supports economic growth; and encourages people who are overlooked or underheard to become a part of solutions and ideas. Engagement or participating in civic pride is when any member or groups of members engage in public concerns, issues, or activities. When community members work together to protect the public interests and improve the standard of living within their community, the values of civic pride are taking place. Addressing and promoting concerns and ideas increases the quality of life for every member of a community. Support for civic pride is needed in every city and town to encourage fair democracy. The importance of having representation for all demographic backgrounds is essential. Oftentimes, minority groups feel underrepresented in communities because many are unaware of the benefits of civil engagement. Good civic engagement encourages everyone in their community to become a part of civic pride. It also means providing opportunities in neighborhoods to engage in civic pride. Many towns and cities across the world have their own symbol of civic pride. Normally, the symbolism is in the form of a landmark, such as a statue, monument or special marker. In fact, you can find most of these items in the middle of the town, such as a center or town square. The United States has amazing places to visit and explore. You can find the real meaning behind civic pride when you realize how communities work together to provide visitors an unforgettable experience. November 10: USMC Day: November 10, 1775: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The American Enlightenment: The American Revolution: The American Revolutionary War: The United States Marine Corps Birthday: -- #BOTD: #HBD! The annual United States Marine Corps Birthday celebrates the founding of the United States Marine Corps with the traditional United States Marine Corps Birthday Ball and cake-cutting ceremony, in observance of the founding of the U.S. Marine Corps. The United States Marine Corps is #born when the Second Continental Congress commissioned by its own decree the innkeeper and former Quaker Samuel Nicholas to raise two battalions of Continental Marines at Nicholas' Tun Tavern, a colonial inn in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Samuel Nicholas (1744 - August 27, 1790) was the first officer commissioned in the United States Continental Marines, and by tradition is considered to be the first Commandant of the Marine Corps. The tavern's manager, Robert Mullan, was the "chief Marine Recruiter", and marks the Tun Tavern as the location where the United States Marines held their first recruitment drive. The decree ordered "That two battalions of Marines be raised consisting of one Colonel, two lieutenant-colonels, two majors and other officers, as usual in other regiments; that they consist of an equal number of privates as with other battalions, that particular care be taken that no persons be appointed to offices, or enlisted into said battalions, but such as are good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve for and during the present war with Great Britain and the Colonies; unless dismissed by Congress; that they be distinguished by the names of the First and Second Battalions of Marines." The first Continental Marine company was composed of one hundred Rhode Islanders commanded by Captain Nicholas. The earliest Marines were deployed aboard Continental Congress Navy vessels as sharpshooters because they were typically recruited as outstanding marksmen. Originally part of the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps became a separate unit on July 11, 1789. Prior to 1921, Marines celebrated the recreation of the Corps on July 11 with little pomp or pageantry. On October 21, 1921, Major Edwin North McClellan, in charge of the Corps's fledgling historical section, sent a memorandum to Commandant John A. Lejeune, suggesting the Marines' original birthday of November 10 be declared a Marine Corps holiday to be celebrated throughout the Corps. Lejeune so ordered in Marine Corps Order 47, which read in part "The following will be read to the command on the 10th of November, 1921, and hereafter on the 10th of November of every year. Should the order not be received by the 10th of November, 1921, it will be read upon receipt. On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name "Marine". In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history." The first formal United States Marine Corps Birthday Ball was celebrated in 1925, though no records exist that indicate the proceedings of that event. Birthday celebrations would take varied forms, most included dances, though some accounts include mock battles, musical performances, pageants, and sporting events. The celebrations were formalized and standardized by Commandant Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. in 1952, outlining the cake cutting ceremony, which would enter the Marine Drill Manual in 1956. By tradition, the first slice of cake is given to the oldest Marine present, who in turn hands it off to the youngest Marine present, symbolizing the old and experienced Marines passing their knowledge to the new generation of Marines. The celebration also includes a reading of Marine Corps Order 47, republished every year, as well as a message from the current Commandant, and often includes a banquet and dancing if possible. In many cases, the birthday celebration will also include a pageant of current and historical Marine Corps uniforms, as a reminder of the history of the Corps. Another modern tradition includes a unit run on the 10th. Marines are reputed to celebrate the birthday, regardless of where they may be in the world, even in austere environments or combat. In a more somber tradition, Samuel Nicholas's grave in the Arch Street Friends Meeting graveyard in Philadelphia is marked with a wreath at dawn by a group of Marines annually on November 10 to celebrate his role in the founding of the Corps. Tun Tavern was a tavern and brewery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which was a founding or early meeting place for a number of notable groups. It is traditionally regarded as the site where what became the United States Marine Corps held its first recruitment drive during the American Revolution. It is also regarded as one of the "birthplaces of Masonic teachings in America". Although tradition places the U.S. Marine Corps' first recruiting post at Tun Tavern, the historian Edwin Simmons surmises that it was more likely the Conestoga Waggon [sic], a tavern owned by the Nicholas family. Each year on November 10, U.S. Marines worldwide toast the memory of the Tun Taven as the officially-acknowledged birthplace of their service branch. In homage to the likely 1775 Tun Tavern menu, the U.S. Marine Corps National Museum located in Quantico, Virginia, contains a Tun Tavern-themed restaurant, whose lunch menu features beer and other fermented (alcoholic) beverages, peanut soup and bread pudding, the non-alcoholic recipe of which remains a traditional staple among some U.S. Marine food services to this day. The tavern was erected in 1686 at the intersection of King (later called Water) Street and Tun Alley by settler Joshua Carpenter, brother of Samuel Carpenter, a Quaker merchant who made a fortune trading in Barbados. Joshua Carpenter built the Tun on the caraway that led to Carpenter's Wharf. Tun Tavern was named for the Old English word "tun", meaning a barrel or keg of beer. In the 1740s, a restaurant appellation, "Peggy Mullan's Red Hot Beef Steak Club" was added to the name of the tavern. Tun Tavern hosted the first meetings of a number of organizations. In 1720, the first meetings of the St. George's Society (a charitable organization founded to assist needy Englishmen arriving in the new colony - predecessor of today's Sons of the Society of St. George) were held there. In 1732, the tavern hosted the first meetings of St. John's Lodge No. 1 of the Grand Lodge Of Pennsylvania Masonic Temple. The Masonic Temple of Philadelphia recognizes Tun Tavern as the birthplace of Masonic teachings in America. In 1747, Tun Tavern became the founding place of the St. Andrew's Society, which like the St. George's Society, helped newly arrived Scottish. Tun Tavern was a significant meeting place for other groups and individuals. In 1756, Benjamin Franklin used the inn as a recruitment gathering point for the Pennsylvania militia as it prepared to fight Native American uprisings. The tavern later hosted a meeting of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and the Continental Congress. In October 1775 a seven man Naval Committee including John Adams appointed by Congress crafted articles of war to build America's first naval fleet. In 1781, near the end of the American Revolution, Tun Tavern burned down. Its former structure stood at a location now occupied by Interstate 95, where it passes Penn's Landing. Tun Alley once existed between Walnut and Chestnut Streets east of Front Street. A commemorative marker on the east side of Front Street indicates the site, across from Sansom Walk. It is listed on Google Maps as located at 125-171 S Front St, Philadelphia, PA 19106. November 10: Sesame Street Day: November 10, 1969: Aesthetics: Performing Arts: Finales: American Television Finales: -- #BOTD: #HBD! National Educational Television (NET, the predecessor to the Public Broadcasting Service) in the United States debuts Sesame Street, an American educational children's television series that combines live action, sketch comedy, animation and puppetry. It is produced by Sesame Workshop (known as the Children's Television Workshop (CTW) until June 2000) and was created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett. The program is known for its images communicated through the use of Jim Henson's Muppets, and includes short films, with humor and cultural references. The series premiered on November 10, 1969, to positive reviews, some controversy, and high viewership; it has aired on the U.S.'s national public television provider PBS since its debut, with its first run moving to premium channel HBO on January 16, 2016. The format of Sesame Street consists of a combination of commercial television production elements and techniques which have evolved to reflect the changes in American culture and the audience's viewing habits. With the creation of Sesame Street, producers and writers of a children's television show used, for the first time, educational goals and a curriculum to shape its content. It was also the first time a show's educational effects were formally studied. The show, therefore, has undergone significant changes in its history as adjustments to the format and content have been made to reflect change sources to the curriculum. Shortly after creating Sesame Street, its producers developed what came to be called the "CTW model" (after the production company's previous name), a system of television show planning, production, and evaluation based on collaborations between producers, writers, educators, and researchers. The show was initially funded by government and private foundations but has become somewhat self-supporting due to revenues from licensing arrangements, international sales, and other media. By 2006, there were independently produced versions, or "co-productions", of Sesame Street broadcast in twenty countries. In 2001, there were over 120 million viewers of various international versions of Sesame Street, and by the show's 40th anniversary in 2009, it was broadcast in more than 140 countries. Sesame Street was by then the fifteenth-highest-rated children's television show in the United States. A 1996 survey found that 95% of all American preschoolers had watched the show by the time they were three years old. In 2018, it was estimated that 86 million Americans had watched the series as children. As of 2022, it has won 222 Emmy Awards and 11 Grammy Awards, more than any other children's show. Sesame Street remains one of the longest-running shows in the world. November 10, 1697: #BOTD: #HBD! William Hogarth FRSA, English painter, illustrator, critic, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist, by far the most significant English artist of his generation (d. October 26, 1764) is #born at Bartholomew Close in London. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", perhaps best known being his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian". Hogarth's works are mostly satirical caricatures, sometimes bawdily sexual, mostly of the first rank of realistic portraiture. They became widely popular and mass-produced via prints in his lifetime. On October 25, 1764, Hogarth was conveyed from his villa in Chiswick to his home in Leicester Fields, in weak condition. He had been in a weakened state for a while by this time, but was said to be in a cheerful mood and was even still working -- with some help; doing more retouches on The Bench on this same day. On October 26, he received a letter from Benjamin Franklin and wrote up a rough draft in reply before going to bed that evening, he had boasted about eating a pound of beefsteaks for dinner, and reportedly looked more robust than he had in a while at this time. However, when he went to bed, he suddenly began vomiting; something that caused him to ring his bell so forcefully that it broke. Hogarth died around two hours later, in the arms of his servant, Mrs Mary Lewis. John Nichols claimed that he died of an aneurysm, which he said took place in the "chest." Horace Walpole claimed that he died of "a dropsy of his breast." Mrs Lewis, who stayed on with Jane Hogarth in Leicester Fields, was the only non-familial person acknowledged financially in Hogarth's will and was left 100PS (approximately 15,236.79PS in 2024 for her "faithful services." Hogarth is buried at St. Nicholas Church, Chiswick, now in the west of London. His friend, actor David Garrick, composed the following inscription for his tombstone: ========= Farewell great Painter of Mankind | Who reach'd the noblest point of Art | Whose pictur'd Morals charm the Mind | And through the Eye correct the Heart. | If Genius fire thee, Reader, stay, | If Nature touch thee, drop a Tear: | If neither move thee, turn away, | For Hogarth's honour'd dust lies here. November 10, 1925: #BOTD: #HBD! Richard Burton, Welsh actor and singer (d. August 5, 1984) was #born Richard Walter Jenkins Jr. in Pontrhydyfen, South Wales. The son of a coal miner, he came to be regarded as one of the greatest acting talents of his day, noted for his mellifluous baritone voice, although he never received an Oscar and was never knighted. He led a tempestuous personal life, highlighted by twice marrying actress Elizabeth Taylor. He died at age 58 of a cerebral hemorrhage. Burton established himself as a formidable Shakespearean actor in the 1950s, and he gave a memorable performance of Hamlet in 1964. He was called "the natural successor to Olivier" by critic and dramaturge Kenneth Tynan. An alcoholic, Burton's failure to live up to those expectations disappointed critics and colleagues and fueled his legend as a great thespian wastrel. Burton was nominated for an Academy Award seven times, but never won. He was a recipient of BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Tony Awards for Best Actor. In the mid-1960s, Burton ascended into the ranks of the top box office stars, and by the late 1960s was one of the highest-paid actors in the world, receiving fees of 1M USD or more plus a share of the gross receipts. Burton remains closely associated in the public consciousness with his second wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor. The couple's turbulent relationship was rarely out of the news. For his contributions to cinema, Burton has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. For his contributions to theater, Burton was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame. Richard Burton died at age 58 from a brain hemorrhage at his home in Celigny, Geneva, Switzerland, where he was later buried. Although his death was sudden, his health had been declining for several years, and he suffered from constant and severe neck pain, a symptom associated with intracerebral hemorrhage, also known as cerebral bleed. As early as March 1970, he had been warned that his liver was enlarged, and he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and kidney disease in April 1981. In a tribute to his Welsh roots, Burton was buried in a red suit and with a copy of Dylan Thomas' poems. He and Elizabeth Taylor had discussed being buried together; his widow Sally Hay Burton purchased the plot next to Burton's and erected a large headstone across both, presumably to prevent Taylor from being buried there. Malcolm X described the difference between the "Black revolution" and the "Negro revolution", he contrasted the "house Negro" and the "field Negro" during slavery and in the modern age, and he criticized the 1963 March On Washington. Malcom X prescribed the Bandung Conference's achievements as a model upon with Black nationalism should be based. On April 18, 1955, twenty-nine nations met at Bandung, Indonesia, for the first Asian-African Conference, also known as the Afro-Asian Conference. It was a meeting of Asian and African states, most of which were newly independent, which took place on April 18-24, 1955. The countries that participated at the Bandung Conference represented nearly one-quarter of the Earth's land surface and a total population of 1.5 billion people, roughly 54% of the Earth's population at the time. The conference was organized by Indonesia, Burma, Pakistan, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and India and was coordinated by Ruslan Abdulgani, secretary general of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The conference's stated aims were to promote Afro-Asian economic and cultural cooperation and to oppose colonialism or neocolonialism by any nation. The conference was an important step toward the Non-Aligned Movement. Malcolm X cited this conference as a template for and model of black nationalism in his Message To The Grass Roots speech. Message To The Grass Roots was ranked 91st in the top 100 American speeches of the 20th century by 137 leading scholars of American public address. November 10, 1975: Maritime Incidents: The Sinking Of The SS Edmund Fitzgerald: -- The 729-foot-long American Great Lakes freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald, the largest ship on North America's Great Lakes, sinks during a storm on Lake Superior, killing all 29 crew on board. She was located in deep water on November 14 by a U.S. Navy aircraft detecting magnetic anomalies, and found soon afterwards to be in two large pieces. She remains the largest ship to have sunk in the Great Lakes. Carrying a full cargo of ore pellets with Captain Ernest M. McSorley in command, she embarked on her ill-fated voyage from Superior, Wisconsin, near Duluth, on the afternoon of November 9, 1975. En route to a steel mill near Detroit, Edmund Fitzgerald joined a second taconite freighter, SS Arthur M. Anderson. By the next day, the two ships were caught in a severe storm on Lake Superior, with near-hurricane-force winds and waves up to 35 feet (11 m) high. Shortly after 7:10 p.m., Edmund Fitzgerald suddenly sank in Canadian (Ontario) waters 530 feet (88 fathoms; 160 m) deep, about 17 miles (15 nautical miles; 27 kilometers) from Whitefish Bay near the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario-a distance Edmund Fitzgerald could have covered in just over an hour at her top speed. Edmund Fitzgerald previously reported being in significant difficulty to the saltwater vessel Avafors: "I have a bad list, lost both radars. And am taking heavy seas over the deck. One of the worst seas I've ever been in." However, no distress signals were sent before she sank; Captain McSorley's last (7:10 p.m.) message to Arthur M. Anderson was, "We are holding our own." Her crew of 29 perished, and no bodies were recovered. The exact cause of the sinking remains unknown, though many books, studies, and expeditions have examined it. Edmund Fitzgerald may have been swamped, suffered structural failure or topside damage, grounded on a shoal, or suffered from a combination of these. The disaster is one of the best known in the history of Great Lakes shipping. SS Edmund Fitzgerald was launched on June 7, 1958. For 17 years, Edmund Fitzgerald carried taconite (a variety of iron ore) from mines near Duluth, Minnesota, to iron works in Detroit, Michigan; Toledo, Ohio; and other Great Lakes ports. As a workhorse, she set seasonal haul records six times, often breaking her own record. Captain Peter Pulcer was known for piping music day or night over the ship's intercom while passing through the St. Clair and Detroit rivers (between Lake Huron and Lake Erie), and entertaining spectators at the Soo Locks (between Lakes Superior and Huron) with a running commentary about the ship. Her size, record-breaking performance, and "DJ captain" endeared Edmund Fitzgerald to boat watchers. Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot made it the subject of his 1976 hit song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" after reading an article, "The Cruelest Month", in the November 24, 1975, issue of Newsweek. The sinking led to changes in Great Lakes shipping regulations and practices that included mandatory survival suits, depth finders, positioning systems, increased freeboard, and more frequent inspection of vessels. It was first released to manufacturing in the United States on November 20, 1985, while the European version was released as Windows 1.02 in May 1986. Its development began after the Microsoft co-founder and spearhead of Windows 1.0, Bill Gates, saw a demonstration of a similar software suite, Visi On, at COMDEX in 1982. The operating environment was showcased to the public in November 1983, although it ended up being released two years later. Windows 1.0 runs on MS-DOS, as a 16-bit shell program known as MS-DOS Executive, and it provides an environment which can run graphical programs designed for Windows, as well as existing MS-DOS software. It introduced multitasking and the use of the mouse, and various built-in programs such as Calculator, Paint, and Notepad. The operating environment does not allow its windows to overlap, and instead, the windows are tiled. Windows 1.0 also contains four releases, which contain minor updates to the system. The system received lukewarm reviews; critics raised concerns about not fulfilling expectations, its compatibility with very little software, and its performance issues, while it has also received positive responses to Microsoft's early presentations and support from a number of hardware- and software-makers. Its last release was 1.04, and it was succeeded by Windows 2.0, which was released in December 1987. Microsoft ended its support for Windows 1.0 on December 31, 2001, making it the longest-supported out of all versions of Windows. Souvenir hunters chipped away parts of the Wall for weeks and months afterwards. The day prior, November 9, the 71st anniversary of the fall of Imperial Germany and the proclamation of the German Republic, East Germany opened checkpoints in the Berlin Wall after standing for 28 years as a symbol of the Cold War, a date now celebrated as World Freedom Day. The Fall Of The Berlin Wall was a pivotal event in world history which marked the falling of the Iron Curtain and the start of the fall of communism in Eastern and Central Europe. The fall of the inner German border took place shortly afterwards. An end to the Cold War was declared at the Malta Summit three weeks later, and the reunification of Germany took place in October the following year. The 27.9 mile wall had been constructed around West Berlin in 1961 to prevent East German and East Berliners, who were in the Soviet-controlled section of Germany, from emigrating to the west via Allied-controlled (United States, United Kingdom and France) West Berlin. November 10: National Vanilla Cupcake Day: -- Some people think that "vanilla" is synonymous with "boring," but today is dedicated to dispelling that myth! The very first cupcakes date back to the late 18th century and took their name from the small ramekins or cups in which they were baked. We've come a long way since then - now, cupcakes are miniature, edible works of art that are almost too pretty to eat -- almost! Diehard chocoholics, do what you will today; the rest of us will be trying not to get vanilla frosting on our noses! What could be more delightful than the enjoyment of a tiny little, personally-sized vanilla cake decorated with delicious frosting?! Cupcakes are a clever and functional way to enjoy the tastiness of cake-without even needing a fork! And the gold standard of the cupcake is vanilla, which can be used as a blank canvas to provide all kinds of fun flavors and designs, from the simple to the extravagant. Since most of these recipes were developed in home kitchens, it is a bit difficult to trace them back to one original inventor. Usually, people would find an idea that worked, share it with a friend or neighbor, and they would pass it on elsewhere. So no one really knows from which specific woman's kitchen the first cupcake originated. However, cupcakes can officially be traced back to 1796 when a recipe notation for a cake to be baked in small cups was written in American Cookery (by Amelia Simmons). This idea was in contrast to what was the most popular way to bake a cake at the time: in layers. It's likely that they were baked into little teacups at first. The benefit of baking them in small cups was that they were great for a cook in a hurry as they would bake quite a bit faster. Plus, they could be served individually, without the need for cutting them into smaller servings with a knife. But it may have taken a few years for these miniature treats to actually get dubbed with their rightful name. In fact, the earliest known documentation of the term "cupcake" came more than 30 years later in 1828 in Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats in Eliza Leslie's Receipts cookbook. Sometime around 1919, the first-ever commercially available cupcakes made an appearance in the form of the Hostess 'Cupcake'. Of course, cupcakes have been a standard at children's parties and afternoon teas over the last many years. But a resurgence of the venerable cupcake certainly came along in the early 2000s. In fact, the world's first Cupcake-only bakery, Sprinkles, in Beverly Hills, California, USA, was opened in 2005. The idea went crazy and cupcake bakery started popping up all over American towns, and then later in cities all over the world. And while these bakers have been creative, and it's certainly possible to get a cupcake in almost any flavor under the sun, this is a day about bringing everything back to the basics, tried-and-true flavor of the vanilla cupcake. https://store.earthstation1.com/lost-howdy-doody-shows-2-dual-layer-dvd-se2.html

November 10: Area Code Day: -- November 10, 1951: With the rollout of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), direct-dial coast-to-coast telephone service begins in the United States. The NANP divides territories into Numbering Plan Areas (NPAs), more commonly called area codes, which are encoded numerically with a three-digit telephone number prefix. Each telephone is assigned a seven-digit telephone number unique only within its respective numbering plan area. The telephone number consists of a three-digit central office (or exchange) code and a four-digit station number. The combination of an area code and the telephone number serves as a destination routing address in the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The system of area codes is important as it helps people to connect telephonically with people living outside their states or cities easily and quickly. It ensures that people can receive important information and news, especially in emergencies. Area codes are a useful location finder for homes, businesses, and even government organizations, especially those that use landlines instead of mobile phones. Although they are used less now, due to cellular and smart communication devices, area codes are still used and will be for the foreseeable future. https://store.earthstation1.com/remember-when-it39ll-never-fly-dvd-technology-history-dick-cave39.html

November 10: International Accounting Day: -- Does the sight of a ledger book make your head spin? That's why we have accountants to figure it all out. Your job, school, bank, religious institution, and government wouldn't survive without those dedicated number crunchers. That's why we have a day out of the year "earmarked" just to celebrate them! The history of accounting as an established practice dates back several millennia. Records and documents originating from the Mesopotamian region traced back as far as 5,000 B.C. reveal the employment of accounting systems in the service of tracking the exchange of goods between temples. Further evidence of the prevalence of accounting would appear from discoveries in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, but the most comprehensive findings would first originate from materials belonging to the period of the Roman empire. Information notated across innumerable archives during this era show detailed quantifications kept across areas, spanning public revenues, private expenditures, the distribution of commodities, and more. The field of accounting has undeniably developed significantly since its introduction in pre-modern times. It would experience especially robust advancements throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period; International Accounting Day is celebrated on the anniversary of the publication of a critical work in the 15th century by an Italian mathematician. The discipline would go on to see a sharp rise in necessity and demand in the fields of business and finance starting in the mid-19th century. The Industrial Revolution would prove to increase the number and size of companies across the world to an unprecedented degree, and it became imperative for corporations to maintain strong accounting departments to have a part in all aspects of business' operations. Now, it is one of the highest paying business majors, with its scope ranging from small businesses to international corporations. Today, there is an indisputably great number of people working in the profession all over the world - the Bureau of Labor reported in 2018 that there were nearly 1.5 million accountants and auditors working in the United States alone! https://store.earthstation1.com/the-great-american-bailout-dvd-1988-sampl-crisis-election-sca1988.html

November 10: World Science Day (Science Day For Peace And Development): -- Celebrates how science promotes global peace and development. The many inventions and discoveries of scientists have helped to promote, amongst others, economic development, poverty reduction, literacy, and better nutrition for millions of people around the world. The purpose of celebrating this day is to remember the achievements of science in achieving global peace and to continue investment in scientific education and research. World Science Day embraces the positive impact that science has brought to society. The main purpose of celebrating this day is to understand the role of science and technology in society. In 1999, UNESCO and the International Council for Science organized the first World Conference on Science. The event took place in Hungary, and several delegations mutually agreed on the need for educating society about science. It was unanimously decided that a special day or week should be dedicated to science. The participants of the conference aimed to promote scientific literacy and developed an action plan. This plan was named Science Agenda - Framework for Action. One year later, UNESCO's Executive Body approved Science Day for Peace and Development. In 2001, steps were taken to create a deep connection between Science and society. Regular updates were given to people about the latest developments in science and technology. Similarly, scientists came forward to make people understand the environmental challenges being faced by our planet and how to live more sustainably. In 2002, the first World Science Day for Peace and Development was celebrated worldwide. Various non-government organizations (NGO's), governmental organizations, research centers, educational institutes including schools, colleges, and universities came together to celebrate this day under the guidance and support of UNESCO. https://store.earthstation1.com/pioneers-of-surgery-dvd-set-4-episode-tv-series-2-dis42.html

November 10: Forget Me Not Day: -- Unlike the whimsical flowers, today is a day to ensure that we really won't forget. The holiday pays tribute to returning soldiers who have lost blood and limbs - things that truly can't be forgotten - in the line of battle. Forget Me Not Day has been around since World War I, although it's often lost in the hustle and bustle of preparing for Thanksgiving. Forget-me-nots are the tiny blue meadow flowers that are incredibly symbolic. From the loss of loved ones to simply missing a childhood friend, the flowers have become synonymous with feelings of missing and longing. In New Zealand, Forget Me Not Day is dedicated to those afflicted with, or who have lost loved ones due to the cognitive degenerative Alzheimer's disease. And while there are some versions of Forget Me Not Day that celebrate this sort of loss or reconnecting with long-lost loved ones, this Forget Me Not day, we focus on something different, but also important. Forget Me Not Day as we know it was established following World War I, when Judge Robert S. Marx, himself a WWI veteran, declared the holiday in honor of veterans who had suffered physical losses in the line of battle - those who had lost limbs, blood, and other integral body parts. Along with the holiday, Marx inaugurated the tradition of selling the popular forget-me-not flowers, repurposing them to raise money for wounded veterans. Whatever reason you choose to recognize Forget Me Not Day, don't forget the pretty blue flowers! Your contributions in buying those will surely go to one of a laundry list of good causes that receive support from flower sales each year. https://store.earthstation1.com/soldiers-a-history-of-men-in-battle-4-dvds-all-13-sh413.html

Eisenhower dedicates The United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) national memorial in Arlington National Cemetery, located in Arlington Ridge Park within the George Washington Memorial Parkway, near the Ord-Weitzel Gate to Arlington National Cemetery and the Netherlands Carillon. The memorial is dedicated in 1954 to all Marines who have given their lives in defense of the United States since 1775. The war memorial was inspired by the iconic 1945 photograph of six Marines raising a U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle Of Iwo Jima in World War II taken by Associated Press combat photographer Joe Rosenthal. Upon first seeing the photograph, sculptor Felix de Weldon created a maquette for a sculpture based on the photo in a single weekend at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland, where he was serving in the Navy. He and architect Horace W. Peaslee designed the memorial. Their proposal was presented to Congress, but funding was not possible during the war. In 1947, a federal foundation was established to raise funds for the memorial. November 10, 1483: #BOTD: Martin Luther, German monk, priest, theologian, professor, composer, leader of the Protestant Reformation (d. February 18, 1546) is #born in Eisleben, County of Mansfeld, SaxonyHoly Roman Empire. Luther was ordained to the priesthood in 1507. He came to reject several teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church; in particular, he disputed the view on indulgences. In 1517, Luther tacked his 95 Theses on the door of Wittenberg's castle church asserting the Bible should be the sole authority of the church, and calling for reformation of the Roman Catholic Church. Luther proposed an academic discussion of the practice and efficacy of indulgences in his Ninety-five Theses of 1517. His refusal to renounce all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet Of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the Holy Roman Emperor. Luther taught that salvation and, consequently, eternal life are not earned by good deeds but are received only as the free gift of God's grace through the believer's faith in Jesus Christ as redeemer from sin. His theology challenged the authority and office of the Pope by teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge, and opposed sacerdotalism by considering all baptized Christians to be a holy priesthood. Those who identify with these, and all of Luther's wider teachings, are called Lutherans, though Luther insisted on Christian or Evangelical (German: evangelisch) as the only acceptable names for individuals who professed Christ. His translation of the Bible into the German vernacular (instead of Latin) made it more accessible to the laity, an event that had a tremendous impact on both the church and German culture. It fostered the development of a standard version of the German language, added several principles to the art of translation, and influenced the writing of an English translation, the Tyndale Bible. His hymns influenced the development of singing in Protestant churches. His marriage to Katharina Von Bora, a former nun, set a model for the practice of clerical marriage, allowing Protestant clergy to marry. In two of his later works, Luther expressed antagonistic views towards Jews. His anti-Jewish rhetoric contributed significantly to the development of antisemitism in Germany, and in the 1930s and 1940s provided an ideal underpinning for the Nazis' attacks on Jews. His rhetoric was not directed at Jews alone, but also towards Roman Catholics, Anabaptists, and nontrinitarian Christians. An apoplectic stroke deprived him of his speech, and he died shortly afterwards at 2:45 a.m, aged 62, in Eisleben, the city of his birth. He is buried in the Schlosskirche in Wittenberg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, in front of the pulpit. He died with Pope Leo X's excommunication still effective. https://store.earthstation1.com/triumph-of-the-west-tv-series-5-dual-layer-dvds-all-13-sh513.html

November 10, 1843: #DOTD: #RIP: John Trumball, American soldier and painter (b. June 6, 1756) #dies in New York City at the age of 87. Trumbull was originally interred (along with his wife) beneath the Art Gallery at Yale University, which he had designed. In 1867, the collection of his works was moved to the newly built Street Hall. His wife and his remains were reinterred on those grounds. The Trumbull Gallery was later razed. John Trumbull was born in Lebanon, Connecticut. He was a Revolutionary War veteran and an American artist of the early independence period, notable for his historical paintings of the American Revolutionary War. He has been called "The Painter of the Revolution". Trumbull's Declaration Of Independence (1817), one of his four paintings which hang in the United States Capitol Rotunda, was used on the reverse of the commemorative bicentennial two-dollar bill. Trumbull later encountered hard times during which he was failing to sell his paintings individually. In 1831, he sold a series of 28 paintings and 60 miniature portraits to Yale University for an annuity of 1K USD. After many years of trying to create income from his paintings, he had finally found a way to sustain himself from his art. Trumbull was appointed president of the American Academy of the Fine Arts in New York City, serving from 1816 to 1836.[20] Emphasizing classical traditions, Trumbull did not get along with the students. At the same time, his painting skills declined. In 1825, many of the students withdrew, founding the National Academy of Design. Unable to accommodate to changing tastes, the American Academy later closed in 1839 after a second fire destroyed its collections. Trumbull wrote his autobiography, which he published in 1841. https://store.earthstation1.com/american-revolutionary-war-dvd-documentaries.html

November 10, 1938: #DOTD: #RIP: Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, known as Mustafa Kemal Pasha until 1921, and Ghazi Mustafa Kemal from 1921 until 1934, Turkish field marshal, revolutionary statesman, author, and the founding father of the Republic of Turkey, serving as its first president from 1923 until his death in 1938, regarded due to his military and political accomplishments as one of the most important political leaders of the 20th century (b. May 19, 1881) #dies at Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul, Turkey at the age of 57. He was succeeded as president by his long-time prime minister Ismet Inonu. His state funeral was held in the capital city of Ankara on November 21, 1938 and was attended by dignitaries from seventeen nations. A delegation from The League Of Nations was also present at the funeral procession. The cortege with Ataturk's flag-covered casket on a horse-drawn caisson processed to the Ethnography Museum of Ankara escorted also by nine armed detachments from foreign nations, among them British, Iranian and Yugoslavian guards of honor. His body remained at the Ethnography Museum of Ankara until November 10, 1953, the fifteenth anniversary of his death, when his remains were carried to his final resting place at Anitkabir mausoleum complex. In 1981, the centennial of Ataturk's birth, his memory was honoured by the United Nations and UNESCO, which declared it The Ataturk Year in the World and adopted the Resolution on the Ataturk Centennial, describing him as "the leader of the first struggle given against colonialism and imperialism" and a "remarkable promoter of the sense of understanding between peoples and durable peace between the nations of the world and that he worked all his life for the development of harmony and cooperation between peoples without distinction". Ataturk was also credited for his peace in the world-oriented foreign policy and friendship with neighboring countries such as Iran, Yugoslavia, Iraq, and Greece, as well as the creation of the Balkan Pact that resisted the expansionist aggressions of Fascist Italy and the Tsarist Bulgaria. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was born Ali Riza Oglu Mustafa in Salonica, Salonica Vilayet, Ottoman Empire. His second name Kemal (meaning "perfection" or "maturity" in Arabic) was given to him by his mathematics teacher, Captain Uskuplu Mustafa Efendi. According to Afet Inan, his teacher gave this name " in admiration of [Ataturk's] capability and maturity"; according to other sources, his teacher wanted to distinguish Ataturk from another student who was also named Mustafa. Ataturk undertook sweeping progressive reforms, which modernized Turkey into a secular, industrializing nation. Ideologically a secularist and nationalist, his policies and socio-political theories became known as Kemalism. Ataturk came to prominence for his role in securing the Ottoman Turkish victory at the Battle of Gallipoli (1915) during World War I. Following the defeat and dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, he led the Turkish National Movement, which resisted mainland Turkey's partition among the victorious Allied powers. Establishing a provisional government in the present-day Turkish capital Ankara (known in English at the time as Angora), he defeated the forces sent by the Allies, thus emerging victorious from what was later referred to as the Turkish War Of Independence. He subsequently proceeded to abolish the decrepit Ottoman Empire and proclaimed the foundation of the Turkish Republic in its place. As the president of the newly formed Turkish Republic, Ataturk initiated a rigorous program of political, economic, and cultural reforms with the ultimate aim of building a modern, progressive and secular nation-state. He made primary education free and compulsory, opening thousands of new schools all over the country. He also introduced the Latin-based Turkish alphabet, replacing the old Ottoman Turkish alphabet. Turkish women received equal civil and political rights during Ataturk's presidency. In particular, women were given voting rights in local elections by Act no. 1580 on April 3, 1930 and a few years later, in 1934, full universal suffrage. His government carried out a policy of Turkification, trying to create a homogeneous, unified and above all secular nation under the Turkish banner. Under Ataturk, the minorities in Turkey were asked to speak Turkish in public, but were allowed to maintain their own languages in private; non-Turkish toponyms were replaced and minorities were ordered to get a Turkish surname. The Turkish Parliament granted him the surname Ataturk in 1934, which means "Father Of The Turks", in recognition of the role he played in building the modern Turkish Republic. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-great-war-dvd-set-1964-wwi-tv-series-26-shows-1964266.html

In 1942, amidst economic incentives and diplomatic pressure, the Americans installed aircraft bases along the Brazilian North-Northeast coast. In February 1942, German and Italian submarines torpedoed Brazilian ships in the Atlantic Ocean in retaliation for Brazil's adherence to the commitments of the Atlantic Charter (which provided for automatic alignment with any nation of the American continent that was attacked by an extra-continental power), making its neutrality only theoretical. Accordingly, Brazil, though at the time being commanded by a dictatorial regime sympathetic to the fascist model (the Estado Novo regime) of the Axis countries, ended up participating in World War II (1939-1945) on the side of the Allied forces. https://store.earthstation1.com/wwii-films-latin-american-at-war-dvd.html

Tupolev produced many notable designs such as the Tu-2, Tu-16, Tu-95, and Tu-104, and the Tu-4 which was reverse engineered from the American Boeing B-29. Tupolev was highly honoured in the Soviet Union and awarded various titles and honours including the Hero of Socialist Labor three times, Order of Lenin eight times, Order of the Red Banner of Labour two times, made an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1953, and a Colonel-General of the Soviet Air Force in 1968. November 10, 1982: #DOTD: Leonid Brezhnev, Ukrainian-Russian general and politician, Soviet politician, 4th Head of State of the Soviet Union who led the Soviet Union from 1964 to 1982 as the General Secretary of the Central Committee (CC) of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), presiding over the country until his death (b. December 19, 1906) #dies of a heart attack in Zarechye in the Odintsovsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. He was honored with a state funeral after a five-day period of nationwide mourning. He was buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis in Red Square, in one of the twelve individual tombs located between the Lenin Mausoleum and the Kremlin wall. National and international statesmen from around the globe attended his funeral. His wife and family were also present. Brezhnev was dressed for burial in his Marshal's uniform along with his medals. His eighteen-year term as General Secretary was second only to that of Joseph Stalin in duration. During Brezhnev's rule, the global influence of the Soviet Union grew dramatically, in part because of the expansion of the Soviet military during this time. His tenure as leader was marked by the beginning of an era of economic and social stagnation in the Soviet Union. Brezhnev was #born in Kamenskoye (now Kamianske, Ukraine) into a Russian worker's family in 1906. After graduating from the Dniprodzerzhynsk Metallurgical Technicum, he became a metallurgical engineer in the iron and steel industry, in Ukraine. With the onset of World War II, he was drafted into immediate military service and left the army in 1946 with the rank of major general. In 1952, Brezhnev was promoted to the Central Committee and, in 1964, succeeded Nikita Khrushchev as First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. As the leader of the Soviet Union, Brezhnev's conservatism and carefulness to reach decisions by consensus with the rest of the Politburo resulted in sustained political stability within the country. However, his hostility towards reform and active cultivation of cronyism ushered in a period of pervasive corruption and socioeconomic decline that came to be known as the Brezhnev Stagnation. Such internal problems were further compounded by an enormous arms buildup that eventually grew to comprise 12.5% of the nation's GNP. On the world stage, Brezhnev pushed hard for the adoption of detente, a commitment by both two superpowers towards the relaxation of Cold War tensions and economic cooperation. Despite such diplomatic gestures, Brezhnev's regime presided over an aggressive foreign policy characterized by the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia, massive military support for Communist forces in Vietnam, and the 1979 armed intervention in Afghanistan. Ultimately, in December 1981, he opted not to have the Soviet military suppress unrest in Poland thereby marking the end of the interventionist Brezhnev Doctrine. After years of declining health, Brezhnev died on 10 November 1982 and was quickly succeeded in his post as General Secretary by Yuri Andropov. Andropov only held the office of General Secretary for less than two years until his 1984 death. Brezhnev had fostered a cult of personality, although not nearly to the same degree as Stalin. Mikhail Gorbachev, who would lead the USSR from 1985 to 1991, denounced his legacy and drove the process of liberalisation of the Soviet Union. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-second-russian-revolution-6-dvd-set-complete-tv-serie6.html

June 16, 1999) is #born David Edward Sutch at New End Hospital in Hampstead, North London, England. He was the founder of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and served as its leader from 1983 to 1999, during which time he stood in numerous parliamentary elections. He holds the record for losing more than 40 elections in which he stood from 1963 to 1997. As a singer he variously worked with Keith Moon, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Charlie Watts, John Bonham, Kent Henry, Noel Redding and Nicky Hopkins, a group known collectively as Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. He was the inspiration for the character Screaming Lord Byron in David Bowie's music video Blue Jean. Sutch's album Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends was named in a 1998 BBC poll as the worst album of all time, a status it also held in Colin Larkin's book The Top 1000 Albums of All Time, despite the fact that 1) Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck, Noel Redding and Nicky Hopkins performed on it and helped write it, and 2) since the music was a put-on, its charm lies in it's being perfectly, beautifully and charmingly awful. Screaming Lord Sutch had a history of depression, and after his mother had died, he went into a severe depression, and killed himself by hanging at his late mother's house some six weeks later. At the inquest, his fiancee Yvonne Elwood said he had manic depression, now known as bipolar disorder. Sutch is buried beside his mother in Pinner New Cemetery (Section J2, Grave 27), Middlesex. He is survived by a son, Tristan Lord Gwynne Sutch, born in 1975 to American model Thann Rendessy. In 1991 his autobiography, Life as Sutch: The Official Autobiography of a Raving Loony (written with Peter Chippindale), was published. In 2005 Graham Sharpe, who had known him since the late 1960s, wrote the first biography, The Man Who Was Screaming Lord Sutch. https://store.earthstation1.com/offshore-pirate-radio-2-dual-layer-mp3-dvds-uk-amp-euro23.html

Lake began to play the guitar at the age of 12 and wrote his first song, "Lucky Man", at the same age. He became a full-time musician at 17, playing in several rock bands until his friend and fellow Dorset guitarist Robert Fripp invited him to join King Crimson as lead singer and bassist. They found commercial success with their influential debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King (1969). Lake left the band in 1970 and achieved significant success in the 1970s and beyond as the singer, guitarist, bassist, and producer of ELP. As a member of ELP, Lake wrote and recorded several popular songs including "Lucky Man" and "From the Beginning". Both songs entered the UK and US singles charts. Lake launched a solo career, beginning with his 1975 single "I Believe in Father Christmas" which reached number two in the UK (bested only by Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"). He went on to release three solo albums with his Greg Lake Band and guitarist Gary Moore, recorded 1981 through 1983 (two studio albums, one live album). He was also briefly but notably a member of pop rock band Asia in 1983, replacing vocalist/bassist John Wetton (another former member of King Crimson) for three concerts in Tokyo, Japan. As well as collaborating and performing with other artists and with various groups in the 1980s, he had occasional ELP reunions in the 1990s and in 2010, and toured regularly as a solo artist into the 21st century. Lake also sponsored other artists, producing their recordings and helping them to get recording contracts. He also was a fundraiser for the National Center for Missing amp; Exploited Children. He died in London, of pancreatic cancer, at the age of 69. His manager described Lake's battle with the illness as "long and stubborn". Numerous fellow musicians paid tribute, including Rick Wakeman and Steve Hackett, Ringo Starr, John Wetton, Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt, Ian Anderson and ELP drummer Carl Palmer. October 20, 1854) #dies of bone cancer at the Hopital de la Conception in Marseille, France at the age of 37. His remains were sent across France to his home town of Charleville-Mezieres where he is buried. Arthur Rimbaud was born Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud in the provincial town of Charleville (now part of Charleville-Mezieres) in the Ardennes department in northeastern France. Rimbaud started writing at a very young age and was a prodigious student, but abandoned his formal education in his teenage years to run away from home amidst the Franco-Prussian War. During his late adolescence and early adulthood he began the bulk of his literary output, but completely stopped writing at the age of 21, after assembling one of his major works, Illuminations. Rimbaud was known to have been a libertine and for being a restless soul, having engaged in an at times violent romantic relationship with fellow poet Paul Verlaine, which lasted nearly two years. After the end of his literary career, he traveled extensively on three continents as a merchant before his death from cancer just after his thirty-seventh birthday. As a poet, Rimbaud is well known for his contributions to Symbolism and, among other works, A Season in Hell, which was a significant precursor to modernist literature. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-romantic-spirit-tv-series-all-14-episodes-5-dual-layer-d145.html

The white press in Wilmington originally described the event as a race riot caused by black people. Since the late 20th century and further study, the event has been characterized as a violent overthrow of a duly elected government by a group of white supremacists. It is the only such incident in the history of the United States. Multiple causes brought it about. The coup was the result of a group of the state's white Southern Democrats conspiring and leading a mob of 2,000 white men to overthrow the legitimately elected local Fusionist biracial government in Wilmington. They expelled opposition black and white political leaders from the city, destroyed the property and businesses of black citizens built up since the American Civil War, including the only black newspaper in the city, and killed an estimated 60 to more than 300 people. The Wilmington coup is considered a turning point in post-Reconstruction North Carolina politics. It was part of an era of more severe racial segregation and effective disenfranchisement of African Americans throughout the South, which had been underway since the passage of a new constitution in Mississippi in 1890 which raised barriers to the registration of black voters. Other states soon passed similar laws. Historian Laura Edwards writes, "What happened in Wilmington became an affirmation of white supremacy not just in that one city, but in the South and in the nation as a whole", as it affirmed that invoking "whiteness" eclipsed the legal citizenship, individual rights, and equal protection under the law that black Americans were guaranteed under the Fourteenth Amendment. https://store.earthstation1.com/sold-down-the-river-black-liberty39s-loss-after-civil-war-dvd-mp4-394.html

November 10, 1932: #DOTD: Evangeline Adams, infamous American astrologer based in New York City, dubbed "America's first astrological superstar", who ran a thriving astrological consulting business, gained widespread notability for successfully defending her astrological pactice in court, and produced a number of popular books ghostwritten by Aleister Crowley, including Astrology: Your Place in the Sun (1927), Astrology: Your Place Among the Stars (1930), and her autobiography, The Bowl of Heaven (1926), contributor to Aleister Crowley's own astrological text The General Practice of Astrology" (b. February 8, 1868) #dies of undisclosed causes aged 64 in Manhattan, New York City. Her Death Certificate has her last name as Jordan, the family name of her husband was George Edwin Jordan, Jr. She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, New York City. Her remains were removed from Woodlawn in July, 1958 and taken to North Plainsfield Cemetery, CT. Before she died, she predicted that the United States would be at war between 1940 and 1944. Adams was born Evangeline Smith Adams in Jersey City, New Jersey, to a conservative family. Her father died when she was 15 months old. Before Adams began working as an astrologer full-time, she became engaged to a Mr. Lord, who was believed to be her employer. Although she said that she was initially in love with him, she lost any feelings that she had for him and subsequently broke the engagement. Thousands of subscribers to her astrological newsletter followed her advice to invest in stocks during the run-up to the Stock Market Crash of 1929. It was towards the end of her career that Adams took to publishing books and raising her profile within popular media. For most of her working life, she ran a thriving astrological practice based on consultation by person or mail. This grew to employ several assistants and stenographers. For a number of years Adams employed Crowley as a ghost-writer. Their business relationship eventually turned into an acrimonious one, which brought copyright issues of "who really wrote what", with regards to Crowley's General Principles of Astrology (now settled with the book being attributed to Crowley but with a recognized contribution by Adams). Adams was arrested three times in New York City for fortune telling, in 1911, 1914 and 1923. Although practicing astrology was not legal at that time, all the cases brought against her were unsuccessful and the May 1914 trial brought particular notability due to the judge's acquittal "of all wrong doing" and praise of her skill, after she gave him an astrology reading describing the character of his son from his birth data. Adams was well paid by her clients for her predictions. She was reputed to successfully predict changes in the stock market. Nevertheless, Adams had no knowledge of economics and her predictions were always vague, foretelling disaster but not specific disasters, predicting that the market would go up when in fact the country was in a period of remarkable growth in the stock market. Adams' most infamous failed prediction was that the "stocks might climb to heaven" a few weeks before the 1929 crash. While her few successful predictions were publicized, her misses were largely ignored by those desperate to believe. https://store.earthstation1.com/wastcrof19do.html

November 10, 1994: #DOTD: #RIP: Carmen McRae, singer-songwriter, pianist, and actress, considered one of the most influential jazz vocalists of the 20th century, remembered for her behind-the-beat phrasing and ironic interpretation of lyrics (b. April 8, 1920) #dies at her home in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 74. She had fallen into a semi-coma four days earlier, a month after being hospitalized for a stroke. She was cremated, and her ashes were scattered at sea. Carmen McRae was born Carmen Mercedes McRae in Harlem, New York City. Her father, Osmond, and mother, Evadne (Gayle) McRae, were immigrants from Jamaica. She began studying piano when she was eight, and the music of jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington filled her home. When she was 17 years old, she met singer Billie Holiday. As a teenager McRae came to the attention of Teddy Wilson and his wife, the composer Irene Kitchings. One of McRae's early songs, "Dream of Life", was, through their influence, recorded in 1939 by Wilson's long-time collaborator Billie Holiday. McRae considered Holiday to be her primary influence. In her late teens and early twenties, McRae played piano at Minton's Playhouse, sang as a chorus girl, and worked as a secretary. It was at Minton's where she met trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, bassist Oscar Pettiford, and drummer Kenny Clarke, had her first important job as a pianist with Benny Carter's big band (1944), worked with Count Basie (1944) and under the name "Carmen Clarke" (having married Clarke) made her first recording as pianist with the Mercer Ellington Band (1946-47). But it was while working in Brooklyn that she came to the attention of Decca's Milt Gabler. Her five-year association with Decca yielded 12 LPs. In 1948, she moved to Chicago with comedian and impressionist George Kirby, with whom she had fallen in love. At the end of the relationship, she worked as a pianist and singer at the Archway Lounge. She played piano steadily for almost four years at a number of clubs in Chicago before returning to New York in 1952. In Chicago she developed her own specific style. Those years in Chicago, McRae told Jazz Forum, "gave me whatever it is that I have now. That's the most prominent schooling I ever had." Back in New York in the early 1950s, McRae got the record contract that launched her career. She was voted best new female vocalist of 1954 by DownBeat magazine. MacRae married twice: to drummer Kenny Clarke from 1944 to 1956, though they separated in 1948; and to bassist Ike Isaacs from 1956 to 1967. Both marriages ended in divorce. Among her most interesting recording projects were Mad About The Man (1957) with composer Noel Coward, Boy Meets Girl (1957) with Sammy Davis, Jr., participating in Dave Brubeck's The Real Ambassadors (1961) with Louis Armstrong, a tribute album You're Lookin' at Me (A Collection of Nat King Cole Songs) (1983), cutting an album of live duets with Betty Carter, The Carmen McRae-Betty Carter Duets (1987), being accompanied by Dave Brubeck and George Shearing, and closing her career with tributes to Thelonious Monk, Carmen Sings Monk (1990), and Sarah Vaughan, Sarah: Dedicated to You (1991). As a result of her early friendship with Billie Holiday, she never performed without singing at least one song associated with "Lady Day", and she recorded an album in 1983 in her honor entitled For Lady Day, which was released in 1995, with songs including "Good Morning Heartache", "Them There Eyes", "Lover Man", "God Bless the Child" and "Don't Explain". McRae also recorded with some of the world's best jazz musicians in albums such as Take Five Live (1961) with Dave Brubeck, Two for the Road (1980) with George Shearing, and Heat Wave (1982) with Cal Tjader. The latter two albums were part of a notable eight-year relationship with Concord Jazz. McRae sang in jazz clubs throughout the United States-and across the world-for more than fifty years. She was a popular performer at the Monterey Jazz Festival (1961-63, 1966, 1971, 1973, 1982), performing with Duke Ellington's orchestra at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 1980, singing "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", and at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1989. She left New York for Southern California in the late 1960s, but appeared in New York regularly, usually at the Blue Note, where she performed two engagements a year through most of the 1980s. In May-June 1988, she collaborated with Harry Connick Jr. on the song "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" (S. Clare & S. Stept) in New York City at the RCA Studios, for Connick's debut album, 20. She withdrew from public performance in May 1991 after an episode of respiratory failure only hours after she completed an engagement at the Blue Note jazz club in New York. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-subterraneans-dvd-1960-leslie-caron-george-pep1960.html
