November 5: American Football Day: -- Time to phone your friends and get the old pigskin out! Sure, they could have just called it Football Day, but if we want the rest of the world to join in on the festivities, we should probably be more specific. American Football Day celebrates the U.S.A's most popular sport and reminds us all that it's mid-season and we should probably check on our fantasy teams. Rugby and soccer both paved the way for American football in the late 1800s. Yale grad Walter Camp gets the credit for pushing innovative rule changes including the line of scrimmage, down-and-distance rules (i.e. "1st and 10"), and the legalization of blocking. Later, coaches like Knute Rockne and Amos Alonzo Stagg capitalized on the new "forward pass" play. College football took off well before the pro version in the early 1900s as Bowl games attracted a national audience for college teams. The NCAA version remains immensely popular today - with media coverage easily rivaling that of the NFL. The pre-NFL American Professional Football Association began in 1920. Things grew quickly on the pro side. The NFL had grown to 25 teams by the mid 20s, and although the rival AFL folded after one season, it marked a growing interest in the game. Several college stars joined the NFL, most notably the University of Illinois' Red Grange. More teams entered the league during the 1950s and the 1958 NFL Championship Game, known as "The Greatest Game Ever Played," changed everything. The Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants, meeting at Yankee Stadium,  played the first "sudden death" overtime game in NFL history. Tied after 60 minutes of play, it became the first NFL game to go into sudden death overtime. The final score was Colts 23, Giants 17. The game has since become widely known as "The Greatest Game Ever Played". NBC broadcast the game live; many believe this set the stage for America's current NFL frenzy. Today there are 32 NFL teams split evenly between the NFC and the AFC. Conference winners meet to determine the league champion in the Super Bowl - generally held in early February. A postseason Bowl playoff system now generates the collegiate "national champion" as well.

November 5, 333 BC: Greece: Ancient Greece: Ancient Greek Wars: The Wars Of Alexander The Great: The Battle Of Issus (The Battle Of Issos): -- One of the greatest battles in history, the second great battle of Alexander The Great's conquest of Asia, and the first encounter between Darius III and Alexander the Great, occurs in southern Anatolia (Asia Minor), as the Macedonian troops of the Hellenic League led by Alexander the Great soundly defeat the Persian forces of the Achaemenid Empire, led by Darius III, who were thrown into full retreat. After the Hellenic League had likewise defeated the Persian satraps of Asia Minor (led by Greek mercenary Memnon of Rhodes) at The Battle Of The Granicus, Darius took personal command of his army. He gathered reinforcements and proceeded to lead his men in a surprise march behind the Hellenic advance, in order to cut off their line of supply. Alexander was forced to countermarch, and the stage was set for the battle near the mouth of the Pinarus River and the town of Issus.

November 5: Bonfire Night (Guy Fawkes Night, Guy Fawkes Day, Gunpowder Day, Bonfire Night, Firework Night) (United Kingdom): -- November 5, 1605: The Gunpowder Plot (The Gunpowder Plot Of 1605, The Gunpowder Treason Plot, The Jesuit Treason): -- Guy Fawkes, a member of the failed Gunpowder Plot assassination attempt against King James I of England and VI of Scotland as well as attending members of parliament , is arrested while he was guarding explosives the plotters, a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby, had placed beneath the House of Lords in order to blow up Parliament and assassinate King. In celebration of the king's having survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London; and months later, the introduction of The Observance Of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure; it remains an annual commemoration in the United Kingdom. The easiest way to recall this observance date of thanksgiving is with the famous nursery rhyme:

The Guy Fawkes mask is a stylised depiction of Guy Fawkes. The use of a mask on an effigy has long roots as part of Guy Fawkes Night celebrations. A stylised portrayal of a face with an oversized smile and red cheeks, a wide moustache upturned at both ends, and a thin vertical pointed beard, designed by illustrator David Lloyd, came to represent broader protest after it was used as a major plot element in V for Vendetta, published in 1982, and its 2005 film adaptation. After appearing in Internet forums, the mask became a well-known symbol for the online hacktivist group Anonymous, used in Project Chanology, the Occupy movement, and other anti-government and anti-establishment protests around the world. The Gunpowder Plot is a story of intrigue, betrayal and political assassination to rival anything on Netflix. In the UK, Bonfire Night commemorates a story of failure. All over the UK, people relive the night Guy Fawkes, Robert Catesby, and a small  band of co-conspirators failed in their attempt to blow up the Parliament building and assassinate King James I in 1605. What came to be known as the "Gunpowder Plot" was hatched out of an uncontrollable anger against the king for his growing intolerance against Catholics in response to the ever-expanding Church of England, headed by the king himself. Fawkes and Catesby were both ardent Catholics who felt that Catholicism could only be reinstated after armed struggle. So, the plot involved blowing up the Palace of Westminster on the opening day of Parliament when the king was in attendance. The plot was eventually discovered when an unknown member of the conspiracy got cold feet and sent a letter to a member of Parliament, warning him away from the building that night.  After a brief struggle, Fawkes and his group were taken into custody. On the very night of the failed plot, British citizens lit bonfires all over London in celebration. Fawkes and the co-conspirators were convicted of treason, which meant a slow, torturous death of being "drawn and quartered. " (However, Guy Fawkes jumped to his death seconds before his execution.)  After the failed coup, Parliament declared November 5 as a "day of thanksgiving" on its first observance in 1606 and it has since been commemorated as Bonfire Night. In the UK most people attend large fireworks displays at Bonfire Night festivals. People also light their own bonfires and set off fireworks. No matter where you do it, Bonfire Night is a big deal in Great Britain.

November 5, 1778: #BOTD: #HBD!: Giovanni Belzoni, also known as The Great Belzoni, prolific Italian explorer and pioneer archaeologist of Egyptian antiquities (d. December 3, 1823) is #born Giovanni Battista Belzoni in Padua, Italy. He is known for his removal to England of the seven-ton bust of Ramesses II, the clearing of sand from the entrance of the great temple at Abu Simbel, the discovery and documentation of the tomb of Seti I (still sometimes known as "Belzoni's Tomb"), including the Sarcophagus of Seti I, and the first to penetrate into the Pyramid of Khafre, the second pyramid of the Giza Pyramid Complex. Belzoni died aged 45 in a village called Gwato (Gwata) in the Commune Of Djakotomey, Kouffo, Kingdom Of Benin (modern Pya, Kara, Togo), where he is buried; according to the celebrated traveller Richard Francis Burton, Belzoni was murdered and robbed.

November 5, 1855: #BOTD: #HBD! Eugene V. Debs, American union leader and politician (d. October 20, 1926) is #born Eugene Victor Debs in Terre Haute, Indiana. Debs was one of the founding members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW or the Wobblies), and five times the candidate of the Socialist Party of America for President of the United States. Through his presidential candidacies, as well as his work with labor movements, Debs eventually became one of the best-known socialists living in the United States. Early in his political career, Debs was a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected as a Democrat to the Indiana General Assembly in 1884. After working with several smaller unions, including the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, Debs was instrumental in the founding of the American Railway Union (ARU), one of the nation's first industrial unions. After workers at the Pullman Palace Car Company organized a wildcat strike over pay cuts in the summer of 1894, Debs signed many into the ARU. He called a boycott of the ARU against handling trains with Pullman cars, in what became the nationwide Pullman Strike, affecting most lines west of Detroit, and more than 250,000 workers in 27 states. To keep the mail running, President Grover Cleveland used the United States Army to break the strike. As a leader of the ARU, Debs was charged with defying a court injunction against the strike. His defense lawyer was Clarence Darrow, and after a well-publicized trial, Debs was convicted and served six months in prison. In jail, Debs read various works of socialist theory and emerged six months later as a committed adherent of the international socialist movement. Debs was a founding member of the Social Democracy of America (1897), the Social Democratic Party of America (1898), and the Socialist Party of America (1901). Debs ran as a Socialist candidate for President of the United States five times, including 1900 (earning 0.63% of the popular vote), 1904 (2.98%), 1908 (2.83%), 1912 (5.99%), and 1920 (3.41%), the last time from a prison cell. He was also a candidate for United States Congress from his native state Indiana in 1916. Debs was noted for his oratory, and his speech denouncing American participation in World War I led to his second arrest in 1918. He was convicted under the Sedition Act of 1918 and sentenced to a term of 10 years. President Warren G. Harding commuted his sentence in December 1921. Eugene V. Debs died at Lindlahr Sanitarium in Elmhurst, Illinois of heart failure at the age of 70, not long after being admitted to a sanatorium due to cardiovascular problems that developed during his time in prison. His body was cremated and buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, Indiana. He has since been cited as the inspiration for numerous politicians.

November 5, 1872: Women's Suffrage: Women's Suffrage In The United States: Elections: Elections In The United States: The 1872 United States Presidential Election: -- In defiance of the law against women voting, suffragist Susan B. Anthony votes for the first time. Anthony was a leader of the women's suffrage movement who was arrested for voting in Rochester, New York in the 1872 elections in violation of state laws that allowed only men to vote. Anthony argued that she had the right to vote because of the recently adopted Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, part of which reads, "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States." On June 17, 1873, the Trial Of Susan B. Anthony (United States v. Susan B. Anthony) began. On the second day of her trial in U.S. federal court in Canandaigua, New York, Anthony was fined for voting in a presidential election at Rochester, New York. After voting rights had been granted to African American males by the 15th Amendment, she attempted to extend the same rights to women. She led a group of women that voted illegally, to test their status as citizens. She was arrested, tried and sentenced to pay 100 USD by judge Ward Hunt, which she refused. Following her death in 1906 after five decades of tireless work, the Democratic and Republican parties both endorsed women' right to vote. In August of 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was finally ratified, allowing women to vote. On February 15, 1820: Susan B. Anthony, American social reformer and women's rights activist who played a pivotal role in the women's suffrage movement (d. March 13, 1906) was born in Adams, Mass. Susan Brownell Anthony was born into a Quaker family committed to social equality. She collected anti-slavery petitions at the age of 17. In 1856, she became the New York state agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society. In 1851, she met Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who became her lifelong friend and co-worker in social reform activities, primarily in the field of women's rights. In 1852, they founded the New York Women's State Temperance Society after Anthony was prevented from speaking at a temperance conference because she was female. In 1863, they founded the Women's Loyal National League, which conducted the largest petition drive in United States history up to that time, collecting nearly 400,000 signatures in support of the abolition of slavery. In 1866, they initiated the American Equal Rights Association, which campaigned for equal rights for both women and African Americans. In 1868, they began publishing a women's rights newspaper called The Revolution. In 1869, they founded the National Woman Suffrage Association as part of a split in the women's movement. In 1890, the split was formally healed when their organization merged with the rival American Woman Suffrage Association to form the National American Woman Suffrage Association, with Anthony as its key force. In 1876, Anthony and Stanton began working with Matilda Joslyn Gage on what eventually grew into the six-volume History of Woman Suffrage. The interests of Anthony and Stanton diverged somewhat in later years, but the two remained close friends. In 1872, Anthony was arrested for voting in her hometown of Rochester, New York, and convicted in a widely publicized trial. Although she refused to pay the fine, the authorities declined to take further action. In 1878, Anthony and Stanton arranged for Congress to be presented with an amendment giving women the right to vote. Introduced by Sen. Aaron A. Sargent (R-CA), it later became known colloquially as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. It was ratified as the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920. Anthony traveled extensively in support of women's suffrage, giving as many as 75 to 100 speeches per year and working on many state campaigns. She worked internationally for women's rights, playing a key role in creating the International Council of Women, which is still active. She also helped to bring about the World's Congress of Representative Women at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. When she first began campaigning for women's rights, Anthony was harshly ridiculed and accused of trying to destroy the institution of marriage. Public perception of her changed radically during her lifetime, however. Her 80th birthday was celebrated in the White House at the invitation of President William McKinley. She became the first actual woman to be depicted on U.S. coinage when her portrait appeared on the 1979 dollar coin.

November 5 (New Style; October 23 Old Style), 1917: The Aftermath Of World War I: 20th Century Revolutions: The Revolutions Of 1917-1923: The Interwar Period (The Aftermath Of World War I, The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Russian Revolution: The Soviet Union (The Union Of Soviet Socialist Republics, USSR): The History Of The Soviet Union: The Russian Civil War: Opposition To World War I: The October Revolution (The Great October Socialist Revolution, The Bolshevik Revolution, Red October) -- An armed insurrection begins in the Russian capital city of Petrograd when a full scale uprising by a fleet of Bolshevik sailors occurs when they enter the harbor, tens of thousands of soldiers rise up in support of the Bolsheviks, and Bolshevik Red Guards forces under the Military-Revolutionary Committee begin the occupation of government buildings there, leading to the Bolshevik revolution in Russia led by Vladimir Lenin that was instrumental in bringing about the larger Russian Revolution of 1917. The following day, the Winter Palace, the seat of the Provisional government in Petrograd, was captured. As the Revolution was not universally recognized, the country descended into the Russian Civil War two days later, a war which would last until June 16, 1923 and ultimately lead to the creation of the Soviet Union in late 1922. The October Revolution had followed and capitalized on the February Revolution earlier that year, which had overthrown the Tsarist autocracy, resulting in a liberal provisional government. The provisional government had taken power after being proclaimed by Grand Duke Michael, Tsar Nicholas II's younger brother, who declined to take power after the Tsar stepped down. During this time, urban workers began to organize into councils (soviets) wherein revolutionaries criticized the provisional government and its actions. The provisional government remained unpopular, especially because it was continuing to fight in World War I, and had ruled with an iron fist throughout the summer (including killing hundreds of protesters in the July Days). Events came to a head in the fall as the Directorate, led by the left-wing Party of Socialist-Revolutionaries (SRs), controlled the government. The far-left Bolsheviks were deeply unhappy with the government, and began spreading calls for a military uprising. On October 23, 1917 , the Petrograd Soviet, led by Trotsky, voted to back a military uprising. On November 6 , the government shut down numerous newspapers and closed the city of Petrograd in an attempt to forestall the revolution; minor armed skirmishes broke out. The next day, the Russian Revolution began. The historiography of the event has varied. The victorious Soviet Union viewed it as a validation of their ideology, and the triumph of the worker over capitalism. During Soviet times, revolution day was a national holiday, marking its importance in the country's founding story. On the other hand, the Western Allies saw it as a totalitarian coup, which used the democratic Soviet councils only until they were no longer useful. The event inspired many cultural works, and ignited communist movements across Europe and globally. Many Marxist-Leninist parties around the world celebrate October Revolution Day.

November 5, 1911: Aviation: The History Of Aviation: Aviation In The Pioneer Era: The History Of Transcontinental Flight: -- Aviator Calbraith Perry Rodgers, in an attempt to win the Hearst prize offered by publisher William Randolph Hearst, completes the first transcontinental flight across America, landing at Pasadena, California. He had taken off from Sheepshead Bay, New York, on September 17 and flew a distance of 3,417 miles. The feat made him a national celebrity, but he was killed in a crash a few months later at an exhibition in California, close to where he had landed during his transatlantic flight. On October 10, 1910, publisher William Randolph Hearst offered the Hearst prize, 50K USD to the first aviator to fly coast to coast, in either direction, in less than 30 days from start to finish. Rodgers persuaded J. Ogden Armour, of Armour and Company, to sponsor the flight, and in return he named the plane, a Wright Model EX, after Armour's grape soft drink Vin Fiz. A special train of three cars, including sleeper, diner, and shop-on-wheels full of spare parts, was assembled to follow Rodgers, who planned to fly above the railroad tracks. Rodgers left from Sheepshead Bay, New York, on September 17, 1911, at 4:30 pm. He reached Chicago, the only required stop, on October 8, 1911. His arrival to Chicago attracted national attention. To avoid the Rocky Mountains, he took a southerly route, flying through the Midwest until reaching Texas. He turned west after passing San Antonio. On November 5, 1911, he landed at Tournament Park in Pasadena, California, at 4:04 pm in front of 20,000 people, missing the prize deadline by 19 days. He left Pasadena on November 12, but crashed at Compton. After the Vin Fiz was repaired, on December 10, 1911, he reached Long Beach, California, flew over the Pacific, landed on a beach and taxied the plane into the Pacific Ocean. About 50,000 people came to witness the completion of the first transcontinental east-west flight. Rodgers had carried the first transcontinental U.S. Mail pouch. The trip required 70 stops and endured countless crashes and aircraft malfunctions. Rodgers paid 70 USD a week to the Wright brothers' technician, Charlie Taylor, who followed the Vin Fiz by train and performed necessary maintenance or repairs. Rodgers was born on January 12, 1879, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Calbraith Perry Rodgers and Maria Chambers Rodgers. His father, an Army captain, died on August 23, 1878 prior to his birth. Among his ancestors, Rodgers had Commodores John Rodgers, who was his paternal grandfather, Oliver Hazard Perry, his maternal great-grandfather, and Matthew Calbraith Perry, his great-grand uncle. He was a cousin to John Rodgers, a naval aviation pioneer known for setting the record of longest non-stop flight by seaplane of 1992 miles (3206 km) on an attempt to fly from San Francisco to Honolulu in 1925. In 1885, Rodgers contracted scarlet fever, which left him deaf in one ear and hearing impaired in the other, which effectively barred him from following the family tradition of naval service. He received his education first at home and then at the Mercersburg Academy. In 1902, Rodgers joined his mother and sister in New York City. He became a member of the New York Yacht Club, and besides boating he rode motorcycles and drove cars. In 1906 he married Mabel Avis Graves; they had no children. The Rodgers resided in Havre de Grace, Maryland. In June 1911, Rodgers visited his cousin John, a naval aviator, who since March was studying at the Wright Company factory and attending flying school in Dayton, Ohio. Rodgers became interested in aviation. He received 90 minutes of flying lessons from Orville Wright, and purchased a Wright Flyer with John. On August 7, 1911, he took his official flying examination at Huffman Prairie and became the 49th aviator licensed to fly by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale. He was one of the first civilians to purchase an airplane. Instead of flying home, Rodgers entered the 1911 Chicago International Aviation Meet, where he competed with the leading aviators of the time. He set several records, including the duration record, and won 11,285 USD in prize money. On April 3, 1912, while making an exhibition flight over Long Beach, California, he flew into a flock of birds, causing the plane to crash into the ocean. His neck was broken and his thorax damaged by the engine of the airplane. He died a few moments later, a few hundred feet from where the Vin Fiz ended its transcontinental flight. The aircraft in this last flight was the spare Model B he had carried in the special train during the transcontinental flight, rather than the Vin Fiz. The Vin Fiz itself was later given to the Smithsonian Institution by Calbraith's widow, Mabel Rodgers, and is now on display at the National Air and Space Museum. According to contemporary records, his was the 127th airplane fatality since aviation began, and he was the 22nd American aviator to die in an accident. He was also the first pilot who fatally crashed as a result of a bird strike. Rodgers was interred at Allegheny Cemetery in his hometown of Pittsburgh.

November 5, 1911: #BOTD: #HBD! Roy Rogers, American cowboy, singer, guitarist, and actor (d. July 6, 1998) is #born Leonard Franklin Slye in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was one of the most popular Western stars of his era. Known as the "King of the Cowboys", he appeared in over 100 films and numerous radio and television episodes of The Roy Rogers Show. In many of his films and television episodes, he appeared with his wife, Dale Evans; his golden palomino, Trigger; and his German shepherd dog, Bullet. His show was broadcast on radio for nine years and then on television from 1951 through 1957. His productions usually featured a sidekick, often Pat Brady, Andy Devine, George "Gabby" Hayes, or Smiley Burnette. In his later years, Rogers lent his name to the franchise chain of Roy Rogers Restaurants. Roy Rogers died of congestive heart failure aged 86, in Apple Valley, California. He is buried at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Apple Valley, as was his wife Dale Evans three years later.

November 5, 1940: Elections: Elections In The United States: The 1940 United States Presidential Election: -- The 39th quadrennial presidential election is held, resulting in incumbent Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt defeating Republican businessman Wendell Willkie to be reelected for an unprecedented third term in office. Until 1988, this was the last time in which the incumbent's party won three consecutive presidential elections. The election was contested in the shadow of World War II in Europe, as the United States was finally emerging from the Great Depression. Roosevelt did not want to campaign for a third term initially, but was driven by worsening conditions in Europe.[3] He and his allies sought to defuse challenges from other party leaders such as James Farley and Vice President John Nance Garner. The 1940 Democratic National Convention re-nominated Roosevelt on the first ballot, while Garner was replaced on the ticket by Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace. Willkie, a dark horse candidate, defeated conservative Senator Robert A. Taft and prosecutor Thomas E. Dewey on the sixth presidential ballot of the 1940 Republican National Convention. Roosevelt, acutely aware of strong isolationist and non-interventionist sentiment, promised there would be no involvement in foreign wars if he were re-elected.[4] Willkie, who had not previously run for public office, conducted an energetic campaign, managing to revive Republican strength in areas of the Midwest and Northeast. He criticized perceived incompetence and waste in the New Deal, warned of the dangers of breaking the two-term tradition, and accused Roosevelt of secretly planning to take the country into World War II. However, Willkie's association with big business damaged his cause, as many working class voters blamed corporations and business leaders for the Great Depression. Roosevelt led in all pre-election polls and won a comfortable victory; his margins, though still significant, were less decisive than they had been in 1932 and 1936.

November 5, 1946: Elections: Elections In The United States: The 1946 United States House Of Representatives Elections: The 1946 California 12th Congressional District Election: -- In a political victory that started Richard Nixon on the road that would, almost a quarter century later, lead to the Presidency Of The United States to which office he was first elected 24 years later on this same date, Richard Nixon is elected to the California's 12th Congressional District seat in the United States House Of Representatives of The 80th United States Congress, when he defeats five-term incumbent Democrat Jerry Voorhis and former congressman and Prohibition Party candidate John Hoeppel with 56% of the vote. First elected to Congress in 1936, Voorhis had defeated lackluster Republican opposition four times in the then-rural Los Angeles County district to win re-election. For the 1946 election, Republicans sought a candidate who could unite the party and run a strong race against Voorhis in the Republican-leaning district. After failing to secure the candidacy of General George Patton, in November 1945 they settled on Lieutenant Commander Richard Nixon, who had lived in the district prior to his World War II service (Richard Nixon's favorite movie was the 1970 film PATTON starring George C. Scott). Nixon spent most of 1946 campaigning in the district, while Voorhis did not return from Washington D.C. until the end of August. Nixon's campaign worked hard to generate publicity in the district, while Voorhis, dealing with congressional business in the capital, received little newspaper coverage. Voorhis received the most votes in the June primary elections, but his percentage of the vote decreased from his share in the 1944 primaries. At five debates held across the district in September and October, Nixon was able to paint the incumbent as ineffectual and to suggest that Voorhis was connected to communist-linked organizations. Voorhis and his campaign were constantly on the defensive and were ineffective in rebutting Nixon's contentions. The challenger defeated Voorhis in the November general election. Various explanations have been put forward for Nixon's victory, from national political trends to red-baiting on the part of the challenger. Some historians contend that Nixon received large amounts of funding from wealthy backers determined to defeat Voorhis, while others dismiss such allegations. These matters remain subjects of historical debate.

November 5, 1956: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Decolonization Of Asia: The Arab-Israeli Conflict: The Suez Crisis (The Second Arab-Israeli War, The Tripartite Aggression, The Sinai War): -- The Suez Crisis worsens as Britain and France land paratroopers along the Suez Canal. The Egyptian forces were defeated, but they did block the canal to all shipping. It later became clear that the Israeli invasion and the subsequent Anglo-French attack had been planned beforehand by the three countries; on October 29, Israel had invaded the Egyptian Sinai, and Britain and France issued a joint ultimatum to cease fire, which was ignored. The Suez Crisis, also known as The Second Arab-Israeli War, and as The Tripartite Aggression in the Arab world and The Sinai War in Israel, was an invasion of Egypt in late 1956 by Israel, followed by the United Kingdom and France. The aims were to regain Western control of the Suez Canal and to remove Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, who had just nationalised the canal. After the fighting had started, heavy political pressure from the United States and the USSR led to a withdrawal by the three invaders. The episode humiliated the United Kingdom and France and strengthened Nasser. U.S. president Dwight D. Eisenhower had strongly warned Britain not to invade; he threatened serious damage to the British financial system by selling the US government's pound sterling bonds. Historians conclude the crisis "signified the end of Great Britain's role as one of the world's major powers". The Suez Canal was closed from October 1956 until March 1957. Israel did fulfill some of its objectives, such as attaining freedom of navigation through the Straits of Tiran, which Egypt had blocked to Israeli shipping since 1950. As a result of the conflict, the United Nations created the UNEF Peacekeepers to police the Egyptian-Israeli border. Distinquished British prime minister Anthony Eden resigned in humiliation in the aftermath of the crisis. Canadian external affairs minister Lester Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize for organizing the United Nations Emergency Force to resolve the Suez Canal Crisis, and the USSR may have been emboldened to invade Hungary, in that it had made the condemnation of Soviet actions very difficult.

November 5, 1960: #DOTD: #RIP: Mack Sennett, Canadian-American actor, director, filmmaker, producer and studio head, known as "The King Of Comedy" (b. January 17, 1880) #dies of lung cancer in Woodland Hills, California, aged 80. He is interred in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. Mack Sennett was born Michael Sinnott in Danville, Quebec, Canada. In 1880, he started in films in the Biograph Company of New York City, and later opened Keystone Studios in Edendale, California in 1912. Keystone possessed the first fully enclosed film stage, and Sennett became famous as the originator of slapstick routines such as pie-throwing and car-chases, as seen in the Keystone Cops films. He also produced short features that displayed his Bathing Beauties, many of whom went on to develop successful acting careers. Sennett's work in sound movies was less successful, and he was bankrupted in 1933. In 1938 he was presented with an honorary Academy Award for his contribution to film comedy.

November 5, 1961: Natural Disasters: Natural Disasters In The United States: Fires: Wildfires (Forest Fires, Bushfires, Brushfires, Wildland Fires, Rural Fires): Wildfires In The United States: The Bel Air Fire: -- A brush fire begins in the Bel Air community of Los Angeles, California that ultimately destroys 484 homes and burns 16,900 acres (68 km2). The fire was fueled by strong Santa Ana winds. There were multiple celebrities affected by the fire. Actors Burt Lancaster, Joan Fontaine, and Zsa Zsa Gabor, comedian Joe E. Brown, Nobel laureate chemist Willard Libby and composer Lukas Foss lost homes in the fire. Others that fought flames before they evacuated were former Vice President Richard Nixon, actor Robert Taylor, film producer Keith Daniels and singer Billy Vaughn. The fire's precise cause was not determined, but it was believed to be accidental. As a result of the Bel Air Fire, Los Angeles initiated a series of laws and fire safety policies. These included the banning of wood shingle roofs in new construction and one of the most stringent brush clearance policies in the US. The Los Angeles City Fire Department produced a documentary, "Design For Disaster", about the wildfire, narrated by William Conrad. It called the densely packed homes nestled on hillsides covered in dry brush "a serious problem in fire protection, even under the best of conditions." KTLA, the first commercial television station west of the Mississippi River, provided live television coverage of the fire from cameras aboard their station's helicopter, the world's first telecopter.

November 5, 1968: Elections: Elections In The United States: The 1968 United States Presidential Election: -- The 46th quadrennial presidential election is held, resulting in the Republican nominee, former vice president Richard Nixon, defeating both the Democratic nominee, incumbent vice president Hubert Humphrey, and the American Independent Party nominee, former Alabama governor George Wallace. Incumbent president Lyndon B. Johnson had been the early front-runner for the Democratic Party's nomination, but he withdrew from the race after only narrowly winning the New Hampshire primary. Eugene McCarthy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Humphrey emerged as the three major candidates in the Democratic primaries, until Kennedy was assassinated. His death after midnight on June 6, 1968, continued a streak of high-profile assassinations in the 1960s. Humphrey edged out anti-Vietnam war candidate McCarthy to win the Democratic nomination, sparking numerous anti-war protests. Nixon entered the Republican primaries as the front-runner, defeating liberal New York governor Nelson Rockefeller, conservative governor of California Ronald Reagan, and other candidates to win his party's nomination. Alabama's Democratic former governor, George Wallace, ran on the American Independent Party ticket, campaigning in favor of racial segregation on the basis of "state's rights". The election year was tumultuous and chaotic. It was marked by the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in early April, and the subsequent 54 days of riots across the nation, by the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in early June, and by widespread opposition to the Vietnam War across university campuses. Vice President Hubert Humphrey won and secured the Democratic nomination, with Humphrey promising to continue Johnson's war on poverty and to support the civil rights movement. The support of civil rights by the Johnson administration hurt Humphrey's image in the South, leading to the prominent Democratic governor of Alabama, George Wallace, to mount a third-party challenge against his own party to defend racial segregation on the basis of "state's rights". Wallace led a far-right American Independent Party attracting socially conservative voters throughout the South, and encroaching further support from white working-class voters in the Industrial North and Midwest who were attracted to Wallace's economic populism and anti-establishment rhetoric. In doing so, Wallace split the New Deal Coalition, winning over Southern Democrats, as well as former Goldwater supporters who preferred Wallace to Nixon. Nixon chose to take advantage of Democratic infighting by running a more centrist platform aimed at attracting moderate voters as part of his "silent majority" who were alienated by both the liberal agenda that was advocated by Hubert Humphrey, and by the ultra-conservative viewpoints shared by George Wallace on race and civil rights, yet used coded language to combat Wallace in the Upper South, where these states were less extreme on the segregation issue. Nixon sought to restore law and order to the nation's cities and provide new leadership in the Vietnam War. During most of the campaign, Humphrey trailed Nixon significantly in polls taken from late August to early October. In the final month of the campaign, Humphrey narrowed Nixon's lead after Wallace's candidacy collapsed and Johnson suspended bombing in the Vietnam War to appease the anti-war movement. In the end, Humphrey was unable to surpass Nixon on election day, losing the Electoral College by 110 votes (not counting faithless electors), as well as the popular vote by a narrow margin. This was the first presidential election after the passage of the Voting Rights Act Of 1965, which had resulted in growing restoration of the franchise for racial minorities, especially in the South, where most had been disenfranchised since the turn of the century. Minorities in other areas also regained their ability to vote. Richard Nixon also became the first non-incumbent vice president to be elected president, a feat that was not repeated until 2020, when Joe Biden was elected president.[3] This also remains the most recent election in which the incumbent president was eligible to run again but was not the eventual nominee of that person's party. Nixon's victory also commenced the Republican Party's lock on certain Western states that would vote for them in every election until 1988, allowing them to win the presidency in five of the six presidential elections that took place in that period.

November 5, 1968: Elections: Elections In The United States: The 1968 United States House Of Representatives Elections: -- Shirley Chisolm becomes the first African American woman elected to Congress when she stages an upset victory over James Farmer, the former director of CORE (The Congress Of Racial Equality), who was running as a Liberal Party candidate with Republican support, in the race for New York's 12th Congressional District seat in The U.S. House Of Representatives of The 90th United States Congress, winning by an approximately two-to-one margin. Chisholm thereby became not only the first black woman elected to Congress, but also the only woman in the first-year class that year. The  12th Congressional District was part of a court-mandated reapportionment plan, had been significantly redrawn to focus on Bedford-Stuyvesant, and was thus expected to result in Brooklyn's first black member of Congress. As a result of the redrawing, the white incumbent in the former 12th district, Representative Edna F. Kelly, sought reelection in a different district. Chisholm announced her candidacy around January 1968 and established some early organizational support. Her campaign slogan was "Unbought and unbossed". In the June 18 Democratic primary, Chisholm defeated two other black opponents, State Senator William S. Thompson and labor official Dollie Robertson.

November 5, 1975: Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs, Unidentified Anomalous Phenomenon, UAPs): UFO Incidents (Unidentified Flying Object Incidents): Alien Abductions: The Travis Walton UFO Incident: -- Travis Walton, American forestry worker, is abducted by aliens of a variety of different races while he was part of a logging crew in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests near Heber, Arizona. Walton was reported missing to law enforcement, who organized multiple search parties to look for the missing man. After five days and six hours, shortly after midnight on November 12, Walton called his sister from a payphone in Heber where he re-appeared after the abduction. November 5, 2006: Iraq: The History Of Iraq: Ba'athist Iraq (The Iraqi Republic [1968-1992]): The Iraq War (Second Gulf War, Gulf War II): The Aftermath Of The Iraq War: The Trial Of Saddam Hussein: -- Saddam Hussein, former president of Iraq, and his co-defendants Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, are sentenced to death in the al-Dujail trial for their roles in the Dujail Massacre, the 1982 massacre of 148 Shi'a Muslims. The Trial Of Saddam Hussein was the trial of the deposed President of Iraq Saddam Hussein by the Iraqi Interim Government for crimes against humanity during his time in office. The Coalition Provisional Authority voted to create the Iraqi Special Tribunal (IST), consisting of five Iraqi judges, on 9 December 2003, to try Saddam Hussein and his aides for charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Saddam was captured by U.S. forces on 13 December 2003. He remained in custody by United States forces at Camp Cropper in Baghdad, along with eleven senior Ba'athist officials. Particular attention was paid during the trial to activities in violent campaigns against the Kurds in the north during the Iran-Iraq War, against the Shiites in the south in 1991 and 1999 to put down revolts, and in Dujail after a failed assassination attempt on 8 July 1982, during the Iran-Iraq War. Saddam asserted in his defense that he had been unlawfully overthrown, and was still the president of Iraq. The first trial began before the Iraqi Special Tribunal on 19 October 2005. At this trial Saddam and seven other defendants were tried for crimes against humanity with regard to events that took place after a failed assassination attempt in Dujail in 1982 by members of the Islamic Dawa Party (see also human rights abuses in Iraq under Saddam Hussein). A second and separate trial began on 21 August 2006, trying Saddam and six co-defendants for genocide during the Anfal military campaign against the Kurds of northern Iraq. On November 5, 2006, Saddam was sentenced to death by hanging; on December 26, Saddam's appeal was rejected and the death sentence upheld. No further appeals were taken and Saddam was ordered executed within 30 days of that date. The date and place of the execution were secret until the sentence was carried out. Saddam Hussein was executed by hanging on 30 December 2006. With his death, all other charges were dropped. Critics viewed the trial as a show trial that did not meet international standards on the right to a fair trial. Amnesty International stated that the trial was "unfair," and Human Rights Watch judged that Saddam's execution "follows a flawed trial and marks a significant step away from the rule of law in Iraq." Several months before the trial took place, Salem Chalabi, the former head of the Iraq Special Tribunal (which was established to try Hussein), accused interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi of pushing for a hasty show trial and execution, stating: "Show trials followed by speedy executions may help the interim government politically in the short term but will be counterproductive for the development of democracy and the rule of law in Iraq in the long term."

November 5: National Chinese Take-Out Day: -- A day is dedicated to Chinese cuisine, which is very diverse, including all dishes, such as meals, and desserts. This is a holiday for all fans and lovers of Chinese cuisine. For those who have not yet had the chance to try Chinese cuisine, this day is a great opportunity to do so. During the National Chinese Take-Out Day, people hold various events that allow them to celebrate this day to the fullest. For example, some go to a Chinese restaurant to order their favorite dishes, while others enjoy their Chinese cuisines home-cooked. The history of Chinese cuisine is characterized by both diversity and noticeable changes. Archaeologist and scholar Kwan Chi-Chang says that "the Chinese are particularly concerned about food" and "food is the center of many social interactions, or at least accompanies or symbolizes them." He explains the basic principles of the organization, which date back to ancient times and give continuity to the food tradition. Ordinary food consists of grains, other starches, and vegetable, or meat dishes. In early dynastic times, the most common crops were wheat, barley, rice, millet, foxtail, corn, and beans. The fruits and vegetables commonly eaten were chestnuts, pears, plums, melons, apricots, red berries, bamboo shoots, and mustard greens. Domestic animals were chickens, tangerine ducks, sheep, camels, and dogs. Seasonings included sugar, honey, salt, and soy sauce. In addition, beer and yellow wine were regularly consumed. Chinese take-out appeared in North America in the mid-1800s. Due to the Gold Rush, there was a large influx of Chinese immigrants to California. Even though the Chinese take-out products were in large quantities, they became popular only in the 1950s. The Chinese restaurants had two menus, one for the Chinese and another for the Americans. Over time, the American menu became dominant and is what remains today in major Chinese restaurants. Very little is known about the history of National Chinese Takeout Day. We do not know when, where, and how it started. But still, we can guess the reason for the creation of the holiday. Perhaps a certain group of people, knowing how much everyone loves Chinese cuisine, decided that it deserves a place in the list of culinary holidays that are celebrated every year.

November 5: National Donut Day (National Doughnut Day): -- One of two national days observed by donut lovers across the nation. The first Friday in June is the other day donuts steal the bakery case spotlight ready to tease their way into white bakery box and go home! History disputes the origin of the donut. One theory suggests Dutch settlers brought donuts to North America much like they brought other traditional American desserts. They receive credit for such desserts as the apple pie, cream pie and cobbler. Donut shapes are as varied as their history. Was the original donut round? If so, American Hanson Gregory laid claim to inventing the ring-shaped donut in 1847 while working onboard a lime-trading ship. Only 16 at the time, Gregory claims he punched a hole in the center of dough with the ship's tin pepper box. Later, he taught the technique to his mother. Traveling further back in time, we look at an English cookbook. According to anthropologist Paul R. Mullins, an 1803 volume included donuts in the appendix of American recipes. However, the earliest recorded usage of the term donut is found in a short story in a Boston Times article about "fire-cakes and dough-nuts" published in 1808.  A more commonly cited first written recording of the word is Washington Irving's reference to donuts in 1809 in his History of New York. He described balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog's fat. The author called them donuts. Today, these nuts of fried dough are called donut holes. Another author, William Cullen Bryant describes donuts fried in lard in his book Picturesque America; Or, the Land We Live In which was published in 1872. Print ads for cake and glazed donuts and doughnuts existed from at least 1896 in the United States. George W. Peck published Peck's Bad Boy and his Pa in 1900. It contained the first known printed use of donut. In it, a character is quoted as saying, "Pa said he guessed he hadn't got much appetite and he would just drink a cup of coffee and eat a donut." In 1919, the Square Donut Company of America was founded. Square donuts offer an easier-to-package product. The more traditional spelling is doughnut. However, both doughnut and donut are pervasive in American English. Donuts come in a large variety of recipes, flavors and toppings. However, just like many pastries, we are only limited by imagination and the ingredients at hand. From syrups and jellies to sprinkles and custards, top them, fill them, bake them or fry them. Donuts have a mouth-watering way of glazing and dusting their way into our shopping carts. They also slip into the break room at work to share.

Redheads are commonly portrayed to have a fiery personality ruled by passion. Whilst redheads have often been in the minority, the culture of celebrating their uniqueness has developed and matured in recent times. In 2005 a Redhead Day festival was launched in The Netherlands, which attracts visitors from over 80 different countries, all redheads, of course. National Love Your Red Hair Day was started in August 2015 by Stephanie and Adrienne Vendetti, who are co-founders of the webpage ''How to be a Redhead.'' The pair noticed a rise in bullying of people with red hair, with days like ''Kick a Ginger Day'' being posted about online. They decided to create their own day to counteract the negativity with something positive. Their aim was to create a day that empowered redheads to embrace and love their hair. Stephanie Vendetti said ''most of all, it's a reminder for women everywhere, redhead or not, to love their unique qualities."

November 5: World Tsunami Awareness Day: -- Japan is credited for starting this observance, owing to its repeated, bitter tsunamis experience. Over the years, it has built up major expertise in certain areas such as tsunami early warning, public action, and building back better after a disaster to reduce future impacts. The United Nations designated this day to raise awareness about the importance of education about tsunamis to ensure that communities act decisively and without panic when tsunami warnings reach them. On December 22, 2015, the United Nations, through resolution 70/23, designated November 5 as World Tsunami Awareness Day. Although they are rare, tsunamis are one of the most devastating and dangerous natural disasters. They have no borders since they do not affect only coastal communities. They also reach and destroy other towns and communities that are located away from the coast. Coastal communities are the most vulnerable when there is a risk of a tsunami. Even though tsunamis are hazardous, there are often natural warnings that a tsunami may be approaching. It could be strong ground shaking, volcanic eruptions, or the water receding unusually far and exposing the seafloor. International cooperation is key in trying to raise global awareness about effective actions, policies, and practices to reduce exposure to this kind of natural disaster. About 58 tsunamis have taken more than 260,000 lives in the past 100 years, more than any other natural disaster. The highest number of deaths during those 100 years occurred in December 2004 when the Indian Ocean tsunami took place. It caused approximately 227,000 fatalities in 14 countries, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. Just three weeks after that tsunami, the international community came together in Kobe, Japan, where Governments adopted the 10-year Hyogo Framework for Action. This agreement was the first comprehensive global agreement on disaster risk reduction. Rapid urbanization and growing tourism in tsunami regions are putting even more people in danger. That is why it is so important that the world makes everything possible to achieve a substantial reduction in disaster mortality.

November 5, 1872: Elections: Elections In The United States: The 1872 United States Presidential Election: -- The 22nd quadrennial presidential election is held, resulting in incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant defeating Democratic-endorsed Liberal Republican nominee Horace Greeley, despite a split in the Republican Party. Grant was unanimously re-nominated at the 1872 Republican National Convention, but his intra-party opponents organized the Liberal Republican Party and held their own convention. The 1872 Liberal Republican convention nominated Greeley, a New York newspaper publisher, and wrote a platform calling for civil service reform and an end to Reconstruction. Democratic Party leaders believed that their only hope of defeating Grant was to unite around Greeley, and the 1872 Democratic National Convention nominated the Liberal Republican ticket. Despite the union between the Liberal Republicans and Democrats, Greeley proved to be an ineffective campaigner and Grant remained widely popular. Grant decisively won re-election, carrying 31 of the 37 states, including several Southern states that would not again vote Republican until the 20th century. Grant would be the last incumbent to win a second consecutive term until William McKinley's victory in the 1900 presidential election, and his popular vote margin of 11.8% was the largest margin between 1856 and 1904. On November 29, 1872, after the popular vote was counted, but before the Electoral College cast its votes, Greeley died. As a result, electors previously committed to Greeley voted for four candidates for president and eight candidates for vice president. The election of 1872 also remains the only instance in U.S. history in which a major presidential candidate who won electoral votes died during the election process. This election set the record for the longest Republican popular vote win streak in American history, four elections, a record that would be matched by the same party in 1908. Grant thus became the only president to serve two full, consecutive terms between Andrew Jackson (1829-1837) and Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921), however, he is one of only four Republican presidents to have served two full terms in office, the others being Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush.

November 5, 1912: Elections: Elections In The United States: The 1912 United States Presidential Election: -- The 32nd quadrennial presidential election is held, resulting in Democratic Governor Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey unseating incumbent Republican President William Howard Taft while defeating former President Theodore Roosevelt (who ran under the banner of the new Progressive or "Bull Moose" Party) and Socialist Party nominee Eugene V. Debs. Roosevelt had served as president from 1901 to 1909 as a Republican, and Taft succeeded him with his support. Taft's conservatism angered Roosevelt, so he challenged Taft for the party nomination at the 1912 Republican National Convention. When Taft and his conservative allies narrowly prevailed, Roosevelt rallied his progressive supporters and launched a third-party bid. At the Democratic Convention, Wilson won the presidential nomination on the 46th ballot, defeating Speaker of the House Champ Clark and several other candidates with the support of William Jennings Bryan and other progressive Democrats. The Socialist Party renominated its perennial standard-bearer, Eugene V. Debs. The general election was bitterly contested by Wilson, Roosevelt, Taft and Debs. Roosevelt's "New Nationalism" platform called for social insurance programs, reduction to an eight-hour workday, and robust federal regulation of the economy. Wilson's "New Freedom" platform called for tariff reduction, banking reform, and new antitrust regulation. Incumbent Taft conducted a subdued campaign based on his platform of "progressive conservatism." As Debs tried to galvanize widespread support behind his socialist policies, Debs claimed that Wilson, Roosevelt and Taft were all financed by different factions within the capitalist trusts, and that Roosevelt in particular was a demagogue using socialistic language in order to divert socialist policies up safe channels for the capitalist establishment. The Republican split enabled Wilson to win 40 states and a landslide victory in the electoral college with just 41.8% of the popular vote, the lowest vote share for a victorious presidential candidate since 1860. Wilson was the first Democrat to win a presidential election since 1892 as well as the first presidential candidate to receive over 400 electoral votes in a presidential election. Roosevelt finished second with 88 electoral votes and 27% of the popular vote. Taft carried 23% of the national vote and won two states, Vermont and Utah. Debs, the fourth place finisher, won no electoral votes but received 6% of the popular vote.

November 5, 1996: Elections: Elections In The United States: The 1996 United States Presidential Election: -- The 53rd quadrennial presidential election is held, resulting in incumbent Democratic President Bill Clinton and his running mate incumbent Democratic Vice President Al Gore being re-elected to a second and final term defeating the Republican ticket of former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Jack Kemp and the Reform ticket of businessman Ross Perot and economist Pat Choate. Clinton and Vice President Al Gore were re-nominated without incident by the Democratic Party. Numerous candidates entered the 1996 Republican primaries, with Dole considered the early frontrunner. Dole clinched the nomination after defeating challenges by publisher Steve Forbes and paleoconservative leader Pat Buchanan. Dole's running mate was Jack Kemp, a former congressman and football player who had served as the housing secretary under President George H. W. Bush. Ross Perot, who had won 18.9% of the popular vote as an independent candidate in the 1992 election, ran as the candidate of the Reform Party. Perot received less media attention in 1996 and was excluded from the presidential debates. Clinton's chances of winning were initially considered slim in the middle of his term, as his party had lost both the House of Representatives and the Senate in 1994 for the first time in decades. He was able to regain ground as the economy began to recover from the early 1990s recession with a relatively stable world stage. Clinton tied Dole to Newt Gingrich, the unpopular Republican speaker of the House, and warned that Republicans would increase the deficit and slash spending on popular programs like Social Security and Medicare. Dole promised an across-the-board 15% reduction in federal income taxes and labeled Clinton as a member of the "spoiled" Baby Boomer generation. Dole's age was a persistent issue in the election, and gaffes by Dole exacerbated the issue for his campaign. On election day, Clinton defeated Dole by a wide margin, winning 379 electors to Dole's 159 and taking 49.2% of the national popular vote to Dole's 40.7%. As in 1992, Perot's strong candidacy held both major party candidates below 50% nationwide. Notably, Clinton's strength with many southern and rural whites makes him the last Democrat as of 2024 to carry the states of Kentucky, Louisiana, West Virginia, Arkansas, Missouri, and Tennessee in a presidential election. He was also the last Democrat to win Arizona until 2020. This was the first presidential election since 1944 in which an incumbent Democratic president won a second full term in office. It is the most recent election in which the Democratic presidential nominee never served as a senator. November 5, 1950: Korea: The History Of Korea: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War In Asia: The Korean Conflict: The Cold War (1947-1953): The Cold War In Asia: The Korean War: The Chinese First Phase Campaign (The Chinese First Phase Offensive): The Battle Of Pakchon (The Battle Of Bochuan): -- British and Australian forces from the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade successfully halted the advancing Chinese 117th Division during the Battle of Pakchon, which took place ten days after the start of the Chinese First Phase Offensive, following the entry of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army into the Korean War. The Battle Of Pakchon, also known as the Battle Of Bochuan (Chinese: Bo Chuan Zhan Dou), took place ten days after the start of the Chinese First Phase Offensive, following the entry of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (PVA) into the Korean War. The offensive reversed the United Nations Command (UN) advance towards the Yalu River which had occurred after their intervention in the wake of the North Korean invasion of South Korea at the start of the war. The battle was fought between British and Australian forces from the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade with American armour and artillery in support, and the PVA 117th Division of the 39th Army, around the village of Pakchon on the Taeryong River. After capturing Chongju on 30 October the British and Australians had been ordered to pull back to Pakchon in an attempt to consolidate the western flank of the US Eighth Army. Meanwhile, immediately following their success at Unsan against the Americans, the PVA 117th Division had attacked southward, intending to cut off the UN forces as they withdrew in the face of the unexpected PVA assault. To halt the PVA advance, the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade was ordered to defend the lower crossings of the Taeryong and Chongchon rivers as part of a rearguard, in conjunction with the US 24th Infantry Division further upstream on the right. During the night of 4/5 November, the PVA and Korean People's Army (KPA) mounted a full-scale assault on the US 24th Infantry Division, pushing back an American infantry regiment nearly 2 kilometres (1.2 mi). The PVA/KPA force subsequently turned west, advancing between the Taeryong and Chongchon rivers and threatening the rear of the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade by cutting the Pakchon-Sinanju road. The following day they attacked an American artillery battery which was guarding a vital concrete bridge near Kujin. The British and Australians then successfully counter-attacked the PVA forces occupying a number of nearby ridgelines during the day but were in turn counter-attacked before being pushed off the high ground during the night. In their first battle with the PVA, the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR) captured a well defended hill with only limited offensive support, and held it in the face of heavy counter-attacks before confused command decisions resulted in a disorganised night withdrawal while still in contact. The withdrawal threatened to open the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade's left flank and the Australians were ordered to immediately reposition on the ridge, yet ultimately it was too late to regain the feature in darkness. However, following heavy fighting the pressure on the Australians unexpectedly ceased after midnight, and parties of PVA were observed beginning to withdraw. By early morning the PVA attack had been checked and 3 RAR had redeployed to new positions in the paddy fields around the railway crossing north of Maenjung-dong. The fighting was costly for both sides. Although the Australians halted the advancing PVA 117th Division and inflicted numerous casualties on them, they also suffered heavy losses. In the aftermath the inexperienced Australian battalion commander-Lieutenant Colonel Floyd Walsh-was relieved of his position by the British brigade commander, having taken over just six days earlier following the death of the previous commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Charles Green at Chongju. Nonetheless, the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade succeeded in preventing a PVA break-through at Pakchon, keeping open vital withdrawal routes across the river and securing the UN left flank. Suffering significant casualties, the PVA offensive was halted the next day due to logistic difficulties. The PVA and KPA were temporarily forced to withdraw north, while the UN successfully reinforced its positions, holding on the Chongchon Line. Yet by late November the US Eighth Army was again forced to withdraw after the PVA began their Second Phase Offensive, starting a long retreat south. The UN forces withdrew from North Korea to the 38th Parallel where they sought to re-establish defensive positions.

November 5, 2003: Aviation: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Civil Aviation: Final Flights: -- The final flight of a Concorde in the US occurs when G-BOAG flew from New York's JFK Airport to Seattle's Boeing Field to join the Museum of Flight's permanent collection. The plane was piloted by Mike Bannister and Les Broadie, who claimed a flight time of three hours, 55 minutes and 12 seconds, a record between the two cities. The museum had been pursuing a Concorde for their collection since 1984. The final flight of a Concorde worldwide took place on November 26, 2003 with a landing at Filton, Bristol, UK. Concorde was a British-French turbojet-powered supersonic passenger airliner that was operated from 1976 until 2003. It had a maximum speed over twice the speed of sound at Mach 2.04 (1,354 mph or 2,180 km/h at cruise altitude), with seating for 92 to 128 passengers. First flown in 1969, Concorde entered service in 1976 and continued flying for the next 27 years. It is one of only two supersonic transports to have been operated commercially; the other is the Soviet-built Tupolev Tu-144, which operated in passenger service from 1977 to 1978. Concorde was jointly developed and manufactured by Sud Aviation (later Aerospatiale) and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) under an Anglo-French treaty. Twenty aircraft were built, including six prototypes and development aircraft. Air France (AF) and British Airways (BA) were the only airlines to purchase and fly Concorde. The aircraft was used mainly by wealthy passengers who could afford to pay a high price in exchange for the aircraft's speed and luxury service. For example, in 1997, the round-trip ticket price from New York to London was 7,995 USD, more than 30 times the cost of the cheapest option to fly this route. The original program cost estimate of 70 million Pounds Sterling met huge overruns and delays, with the program eventually costing 1.3 billion Pounds Sterling. It was this extreme cost that became the main factor in the production run being much smaller than anticipated. Later, another factor which affected the viability of all supersonic transport programmes was that supersonic flight could only be used on ocean-crossing routes, to prevent sonic boom disturbance over populated areas. With only seven airframes each being operated by the British and French, the per-unit cost was impossible to recoup, so the French and British governments absorbed the development costs. British Airways and Air France were able to operate Concorde at a profit, in spite of very high maintenance costs, because the aircraft was able to sustain a high ticket price. Among other destinations, Concorde flew regular transatlantic flights from London's Heathrow Airport and Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia, and Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados; it flew these routes in less than half the time of other airliners. Concorde's name, meaning "harmony" or "union", was chosen to reflect the co-operation on the project between the United Kingdom and France. In the UK, any or all of the type are known simply as Concorde, with no definite article "the". Concorde won the 2006 Great British Design Quest organised by the BBC and the Design Museum, beating other well-known designs such as the BMC Mini, the miniskirt, the Jaguar E-Type, the London Tube map and the Supermarine Spitfire. The type was retired in 2003, three years after the crash of Air France Flight 4590, in which all passengers and crew were killed. The general downturn in the commercial aviation industry after the September 11 attacks in 2001 and the end of maintenance support for Concorde by Airbus (the successor company of both Aerospatiale and BAC) also contributed.

November 5, 1956: #DOTD: #RIP: Art Tatum, African American pianist and composer, widely considered one of the greatest jazz piano players of all time (b. October 13, 1909) #dies at the age of 47 of uremia at Queen of Angels Medical Center in Los Angeles. By 1956, Tatum's health had deteriorated due to advanced uremia. Nevertheless, in August of that year he played to the largest audience of his career: 19,000 gathered at the Hollywood Bowl for another record producer and concert promoter Norman Granz-led event. The next month, he had the last of the Granz group recording sessions, with saxophonist Ben Webster, and then played at least two concerts in October. He was too unwell to continue touring, so returned to his home in Los Angeles. Musicians visited him on November 4, and other pianists played for him as he lay in bed at Queen of Angels Medical Center, where he died the next day. He was buried at Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles, California, but was moved to Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California in 1992 by his second wife, so she could be buried next to him. Art Tatum was born Arthur Tatum Jr. in Toledo, Ohio into the conventional and church-going family of Arthur Tatum Sr. and Mildred Hoskins. From infancy, Tatum had impaired vision. Several explanations for this have been posited, most involving cataracts. As a result of eye operations, by the age of 11, Tatum could see objects close to him and perhaps distinguish colors. Any benefits from these procedures were reversed, however, when he was assaulted, probably in his early twenties. The attack left him completely blind in his left eye and with very limited vision in his right. Despite this, there are multiple accounts of him enjoying playing cards and pool. Art Tatum's performances were hailed for their technical proficiency and creativity, which set a new standard for jazz piano virtuosity. Critic Scott Yanow wrote, "Tatum's quick reflexes and boundless imagination kept his improvisations filled with fresh (and sometimes futuristic) ideas that put him way ahead of his contemporaries.". His playing encompassed the styles of earlier musicians, while adding harmonic and rhythmic imagination and complexity. Acclaimed for his virtuoso technique, Tatum extended the vocabulary and boundaries of jazz piano, and established new ground in jazz through innovative use of reharmonization, voicing, and bitonality. Arthur Tatum Jr. grew up in Toledo, Ohio, where he began playing piano professionally and had his own radio program, rebroadcast nationwide, while still in his teens. He left Toledo in 1932 and had residencies as a solo pianist at clubs in major urban centers including New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Throughout his career, Tatum also played in after-hours venues at which he was said to be more spontaneous and creative than in his regular paid performances. Tatum drank large quantities of alcohol when performing; although it did not negatively affect his playing, it damaged his health. In the 1940s, Tatum led a commercially successful trio for a short time and began playing in more formal jazz concert settings, including at Norman Granz-produced Jazz at the Philharmonic events. Granz recorded Tatum extensively in solo and small group formats in the mid-1950s, with the last session occurring only two months before the pianist's death. Tatum was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1964 and given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989.

November 5, 1931: #BOTD: Ike Turner, Creole American singer, songwriter, guitarist, bandleader, record producer, talent scout, wife beater and jerk, pioneer of 1950s rock and roll, best known for his work in the 1960s and 1970s with his then-wife Tina Turner as the leader of the Ike &amp; Tina Turner Revue (d. December 12, 2007) is #born Izear Luster Turner Jr. in Clarksdale, Mississippi to creole parents. When Turner applied for his first passport in the 1960s, he discovered that his name was registered as Ike Wister Turner. By then both of his parents were deceased, so he could not verify the origin of his name. Turner began playing piano and guitar as a child and then formed the Kings of Rhythm as a teenager. His first recording, "Rocket 88" (credited to Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats), is considered a contender for the distinction of first rock and roll song. During the 1950s, Turner also worked as a talent scout and producer for Sun Records and Modern Records. He was instrumental in the early careers of various blues musicians such as B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, and Bobby "Blue" Bland. In 1954, Turner relocated to East St. Louis where his Kings of Rhythm became one of the most renowned acts in Greater St. Louis. He later formed the Ike &amp; Tina Turner Revue in 1960, which over the course of the decade became a soul/rock crossover success. Turner's cocaine addiction and legal troubles, together with accounts by Tina Turner of domestic violence (published in her 1986 autobiography I, Tina and the 1993 film adaptation What's Love Got to Do with It), impacted his career in the 1980s and 1990s. Addicted to cocaine for at least 15 years, Turner was convicted of drug offenses and served 18 months in prison. After his release in 1991, he remained drug-free until he relapsed in 2004, dying of a drug overdose in 2007. During the last decade of Turner's life, he revived his career as a frontman by returning to his blues roots. He released two award-winning albums, Here and Now and Risin with the Blues. Hailed as a "great innovator" of rock and roll by contemporaries such as Little Richard and Johnny Otis, Turner received critical acclaim as well. Rolling Stone magazine editor David Fricke ranked Turner No. 61 on his list of 100 Greatest Guitarists and noted, "Turner was one of the first guitarists to successfully transplant the intensity of the blues into more-commercial music." Turner won five Grammy Awards, including two competitive awards and three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards. He was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with Tina Turner in 1991. He is also inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame, the Clarksdale Walk of Fame, the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame, and the Rhythm &amp; Blues Hall of Fame. On January 16, 2008, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office reported that Ike Turner had died aged 76 from a cocaine overdose. "The cause of death for Ike Turner is cocaine toxicity with other significant conditions, such as hypertensive cardiovascular disease and pulmonary emphysema". His funeral was held on December 21, 2007, at the City of Refuge Church in Gardena, California. Among those who spoke at the funeral were Little Richard, Solomon Burke and Phil Spector. The Kings of Rhythm played "Rocket 88" and "Proud Mary". Turner was cremated after the funeral service; the final disposition of his ashes are not publicly disclosed other than that they were given to family or friend(s). Turner died without a valid will. Less than a week after his death, his former wife Audrey Madison Turner filed a petition stating that he had penned a handwritten will naming her as a beneficiary. In 2009, a judge ruled that the handwritten will was invalid and that Turner's children were legally the direct heirs of his estate.

The variety program was one of the first hosted by an African American. The program started at a length of fifteen-minutes but was increased to a half-hour in July 1957. Rheingold Beer was a regional sponsor, but a national sponsor was never found, and companies such as Max Factor vociferously opposed sponsoring it. The show was in trouble financially despite efforts by NBC, Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, Frankie Laine, Peggy Lee, and Mel Torme. Cole decided to end the program. November 5, 1986: Anti-Black Racism: Anti-Black Racism In The United States: -- Governor of Arizona Evan Mecham fullfills his campaign promise to cancel a paid Martin Luther King Day holiday for state employees as his first act in office. The holiday had been created in May 1986 by executive order from the previous governor, Bruce Babbitt, after the state legislature had voted not to create the holiday. Following the creation of the holiday, the state Attorney General's office issued an opinion that the paid holiday was illegal and threatened to sue the incoming governor over the cost of the paid holiday, as it had not been approved by the legislature. Despite the issues of the legality of how the holiday was created, Mecham replied to comments from civil rights activists and the Black community after the cancellation by saying "King doesn't deserve a holiday." This was followed by him telling a group of Black community leaders, "You folks don't need another holiday. What you folks need are jobs." In reaction to the cancellation, a protest march to the state capital was held on January 19, 1987, the day the holiday would have occurred. Conventions scheduled to be held in Arizona were canceled, and performer Stevie Wonder and writer Harlan Ellison separately announced that they would boycott the state. The rap group Public Enemy released a song in regard to the cancellation of the MLK holiday titled "By the Time I Get to Arizona"; in the video for the song, the group was seen assassinating Mecham by planting a bomb underneath his limousine and detonating it by remote control. The rock band U2, which performed a concert at Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe in early April 1987, joined in with the chorus of condemnation of Mecham, publicly announcing that they had donated money to the impeachment campaign, and having him denounced from the stage by a spokesman to their audience and the attending press, television, and radio outlets. After several months of criticism, Mecham declared a non-paid holiday on the third Sunday in January, selecting a day of the week that most state workers don't work on. Reaction in the state to the non-paid holiday was poor. While Governor, Mecham became widely known for racist statements and actions, such as his defense of the word "pickaninny" in describing African American children. In reaction to these events, a boycott of Arizona was organized. A rift between the Governor and fellow Republicans in the Arizona Legislature developed after the Arizona Republic newspaper made accusations of questionable political appointments and cronyism, accusations that Mecham contended were false. Having served from January 5, 1987, to April 4, 1988, Mecham was removed from office following conviction in his impeachment trial on charges of obstruction of justice and misuse of government funds-funds that Mecham maintained were private. A later criminal trial acquitted Mecham of related charges.

Cohan, known in the decade before World War I as "The Man Who Owned Broadway", American entertainer, playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer and theatrical producer, considered the father of American musical comedy (b. July 3, 1878) #dies of bladder cancer at the age of 64 at his Manhattan apartment on Fifth Avenue, surrounded by family and friends. His funeral was held at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York, and was attended by thousands of people, including five governors of New York, two mayors of New York City and the Postmaster General. The honorary pallbearers included Irving Berlin, Eddie Cantor, Frank Crowninshield, Sol Bloom, Brooks Atkinson, Rube Goldberg, Walter Huston, George Jessel, Connie Mack, Joseph McCarthy, Eugene O'Neill, Sigmund Romberg, Lee Shubert and Fred Waring. Cohan was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, New York City, in a private family mausoleum he had erected a quarter century earlier for his sister and parents. George M. Cohan was born George Michael Cohan in Providence, Rhode Island, to Irish Catholic parents. Cohan began his career as a child, performing with his parents and sister in a vaudeville act known as "The Four Cohans". Beginning with Little Johnny Jones in 1904, he wrote, composed, produced, and appeared in more than three dozen Broadway musicals. Cohan wrote more than 50 shows and published more than 300 songs during his lifetime, including the standards "Over There", "Give My Regards to Broadway", "The Yankee Doodle Boy" and "You're a Grand Old Flag". As a composer, he was one of the early members of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). He displayed remarkable theatrical longevity, appearing in films until the 1930s and continuing to perform as a headline artist until 1940. His life and music were depicted in the Oscar-winning film Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) and the 1968 musical George M!. A statue of Cohan in Times Square, New York City, commemorates his contributions to American musical theatre.

November 5, 2005: #DOTD: #RIP: Link Wray, Native American Shawnee pioneer rock and roll guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist who became popular in the late 1950s, whose 1958 instrumental hit "Rumble" by Link Wray And His Ray Men popularized the power chord, which became the foundation of modern rock guitar music from rock to punk (b. May 2, 1929) #dies of heart failure at his home in Copenhagen, on November 5, 2005, at the age of 76. He was survived by his nine children, 24 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Wray was cremated, and his ashes were buried in the crypt of the Christian's Church, Copenhagen. Link Wray was born Fred Lincoln Wray, Jr. in Dunn, North Carolina, to Fred Lincoln Wray Sr. and Lillian Mae (nee Coats), whom her son identified as being Shawnee. He recalled living in very harsh conditions during childhood, in mud huts, without electricity or heating, going to school barefoot, barely clothed. He recounted that his family experienced discrimination, including times when they had to hide from the Ku Klux Klan. Wray later said: "The cops, the sheriff, the drugstore owner - they were all Ku Klux Klan. They put the masks on and, if you did something wrong, they'd tie you to a tree and whip you or kill you." His family listed themselves as White on census records. Three songs Wray performed during his career were named for Indigenous peoples: "Shawnee", "Apache", and "Comanche". Though he began in country music, his musical style went on to consist primarily of rock and roll, rockabilly, and instrumental rock. Link Wray built on the distorted electric guitar sound of early rock and roll records records and mixed it with the songs and rhythms of black rhythm and blues. He is cited as an influence by Iggy Pop and Neil Young. Jimmy Page says that Link Wray had a "real rebel attitude" and credits him in It Might Get Loud as a major influence in his early career. According to Rolling Stone, Pete Townshend of The Who once said, "If it hadn't been for Link Wray and 'Rumble,' I never would have picked up a guitar." Wray's first three marriages, to Elizabeth Canady Wray, Ethel Tidwell Wray, and Sharon Cole Wray, produced eight children. In the early 1980s, Wray relocated to Denmark and married Olive Povlsen, who became his manager. Rolling Stone placed Wray at No. 45 of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. In 2013 and 2017 he was a nominee for The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, prior to being inducted in the Musical Influence category in 2023.

November 5, 2003: #DOTD: #RIP: Bobby Hatfield, American singer and songwriter (b. August 10, 1940) #dies at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan on November 5, 2003, aged 63. He was found by Bill Medley and the Righteous Brothers' road manager Dusty Hanvey. A security guard let them into Hatfield's room after he had failed to show up at the concert venue when expected. He apparently died in his sleep, hours before a scheduled Righteous Brothers concert. In January 2004, a toxicology report concluded that cocaine use had precipitated a fatal heart attack. The initial autopsy found that Hatfield had advanced coronary disease. The medical examiner stated that "in this case, there was already a significant amount of blockage in the coronary arteries." He is buried at Pacific View Memorial Park cemetery in Corona del Mar, California. Bobby Hatfield was born Robert Lee Hatfield in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He and Bill Medley were the Righteous Brothers. He sang the tenor part for the duo, and sang solo on the group's 1965 recording of "Unchained Melody". Hatfield moved with his family to Anaheim, California, when he was four. He attended Anaheim High School, where he played football and baseball, and was co-captain of the basketball team. He was student body president in the 1957-1958 school year, graduating in 1958. He briefly considered signing as a professional ballplayer, but his passion for music led him to pursue a singing career while still attending high school. He attended Fullerton College. He eventually encountered his singing partner, Bill Medley, while attending California State University, Long Beach. Hatfield is an alumnus of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Bobby Hatfield initially was in a group from Anaheim called the Variations. In 1962, Hatfield joined with Medley who was in a group called the Paramours, and formed a five-member group using the same name: Paramours. They first performed at a club called John's Black Derby in Santa Ana. Later they performed as a duo and named their singing act The Righteous Brothers. They were often told they sounded like African American gospel singers and chose the name after black Marines remarked of their singing, "that's righteous, brothers" and called them "righteous brothers". Their first charted single as the Righteous Brothers was "Little Latin Lupe Lu" released under the label Moonglow Records, and they appeared regularly on the television show Shindig! Hatfield also recorded as solo artist with Moonglow and released an uncharted single, "Hot Tamales"/"I Need a Girl". In 1964, they appeared in a show at the Cow Palace near San Francisco and met the music producer Phil Spector, whose group The Ronettes was also in the show. Spector was impressed and signed them to his own label Philles Records. Their first No. 1 was "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," produced by Phil Spector in 1964. Follow-up hits included "Unchained Melody," which was actually a Hatfield solo performance. After the success of "Unchained Melody", Spector then started recording older standards with the Righteous Brothers such as "Ebb Tide", which Hatfield also performed solo, and it reached the Top 5. Both "Unchained Melody" and "Ebb Tide" were songs he had performed with his first group, the Variations. Another two of the last songs the duo recorded with Philles Records, "The White Cliffs of Dover" and "For Sentimental Reasons", were performed solo by Hatfield. In 1966, the Righteous Brothers left Spector and signed with Verve/MGM Records, and had a hit with "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration". However the duo broke up in 1968, and Hatfield teamed with singer Jimmy Walker (from The Knickerbockers) using the Righteous Brothers name on the MGM label. The new partnership released an album but did not have much success. Hatfield recorded a number of singles as a solo artist, such as the self-penned "Hang Ups" and covers of older songs, but "Only You" was his only charted single, peaking at No. 95. In 1969, Hatfield also appeared in the TV movie The Ballad of Andy Crocker. In 1971, he released a solo album, Messin' in Muscle Shoals, recorded at the FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals in August 1970. However, MGM was in financial trouble, a scheduled single "The Promised Land"/"Woman You Got No Soul" was not released, and with little promotion the album largely went unnoticed. Hatfield and Medley reunited in 1974, and had another hit, the No. 3 "Rock and Roll Heaven." A hiatus followed between 1976 and 1981 when Medley retired from music after his ex-wife died, but they reunited for an anniversary special on American Bandstand in 1981 to perform an updated version of "Rock and Roll Heaven". In 1990, after the success of the film Ghost in which "Unchained Melody" was used, Hatfield re-recorded the song and remarked to friends that he had not lost any of the high notes in his tenor range since the original recording, but had actually gained one note. The duo then toured extensively all through the 1990s and early 2000s. The Righteous Brothers were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in March 2003 by Billy Joel. Hatfield had a short marriage with Joy Ciro, who appeared as a dancer on the T.A.M.I. Show and Where the Action Is. They had two children, Bobby, Jr. and Kalin. Hatfield married Linda Torrison] on August 4, 1979, and they remained married until his death. Linda suffered from lupus, and Hatfield set up an annual golf tournament, the Bobby Hatfield Charity Golf Classic, to raise funds for charities for the disease. The couple had two children, Vallyn and Dustin.

The cause was most likely a stray American bomber, though the bombs used were of British manufacture.

November 5, 1916: The European Civil War: World War I: The First European War (The European Theater Of World War I): The Eastern Front Of World War I: The History Of Poland: The Act Of 5th November: The Kingdom Of Poland (The Regency Kingdom Of Poland): -- A declaration of Emperors Wilhelm II Of Germany and Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary promises the creation of The Kingdom Of Poland envisioned by its authors as a puppet state controlled by the Central Powers. It was to be created out of territory of Congress Poland (Congress Kingdom of Poland, Russian Poland, ormally known as the Kingdom of Poland), a polity created in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna as a semi-autonomous Polish state, a successor to Napoleon's Duchy of Warsaw. While The Kingdom Of Poland may have been proposed as a puppet state of Germany during World War I, in reality, German imperial planners wanted to annex around 30,000 square kilometers of the territory of former Congress Poland and carry out ethnic cleansing up to 3 million Poles and Jews to make room for German colonists in the so-called Polish Border Strip plan. The decision to promise restoration of Poland was taken by Germany in order to attempt to legitimize its military occupation amongst the Polish inhabitants, following upon German propaganda sent to the Poles in 1915 that German soldiers were arriving as liberators to free Poland from subjugation by Russia. A draft of a constitution was proposed 1917. The German government used punitive threats to induce Polish landowners living in the German-occupied Baltic territories to move to the state and sell their Baltic property to Germans in exchange for moving to Poland, and efforts were made to remove Poles from Polish territories partitioned by Prussia. Following the armistice with Germany that ended World War I, the area became part of the Second Polish Republic.

November 5, 1615: #BOTD: Ibrahim Of The Ottoman Empire, known as Ibrahim The Mad by some 20th-century historians due to his erratic behavior and reputed mental condition, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1640 until 1648 (d. August 18, 1648) is #born in Topkapi Palace, Constantinople, Ottoman Empire (present-day Istanbul, Turkey), the son of Sultan Ahmed I by Kosem Sultan, an ethnic Greek originally named Anastasia. He was called Ibrahim The Mad (Turkish: Deli Ibrahim) due to his mental condition and behavior. However, historian Scott Rank notes that his opponents spread rumors of the sultan's insanity, and some historians suggest he was more incompetent than mad. He died when he is executed ten days after he was seized in a palace coup and imprisoned in Topkapi Palace (Turkish: "Cannon Gate Palace", the main residence and headquarters of the Ottoman sultans in the 15th and 16th centuries), after his corrupt Grand Vizier Ahmed Pasha was strangled to death and torn to shreds by an angry mob (gaining him the posthumous nickname "Hezarpare" ("thousand pieces")). Ibrahim's mother Kosem, an ethnic Greek and one of the most powerful women in Ottoman history, gave consent to her son's fall, saying "In the end he will leave neither you nor me alive. We will lose control of the government. The whole society is in ruins. Have him removed from the throne immediately." Ibrahim's six-year-old son, Mehmed, born of Ibrahim's Ukrainian concubine Turhan, was made Sultan (Emperor) as Mehmed IV. The new grand vizier, Sofu Mehmed Pasha, petitioned the sheikh ul-Islam for a fatwa sanctioning Ibrahim's execution. It was granted, with the message "if there are two caliphs (politico-religious successors), kill one of them." Kosem also gave her consent. Two executioners were sent for; one being the chief executioner who served under Ibrahim. As officials watched from a palace window, Ibrahim was strangled on August 18, 1648. His became the second regicide in the history of the Ottoman Empire. He is buried in The Tomb Of Sultan Mustafa I And Sultan Ibrahim in Istanbul, Turkey.

Joel McCrea, American actor whose career spanned a wide variety of genres over almost five decades, including comedy, drama, romance, thrillers, adventures, and Westerns, for which he became best known (d. October 20, 1990) is #born Joel Albert McCrea in South Pasadena, California, the son of Thomas McCrea, an executive with the L.A. Gas &amp; Electric Company, and Louise "Lou" Whipple. As a boy, he had a paper route delivering the Los Angeles Times to Cecil B. DeMille and other people in the film industry. He also had the opportunity to watch D. W. Griffith filming Intolerance.  He appeared in over one hundred films, starring in over eighty, among them Alfred Hitchcock's spy film Foreign Correspondent (1940), Preston Sturges' comedy classics Sullivan's Travels (1940), and The Palm Beach Story (1941), the romance film Bird of Paradise (1932), the adventure classic The Most Dangerous Game (1933), George Stevens' The More the Merrier (1941), and the titular character in the western classic The Virginian (1946). With the exception of the British thriller film Rough Shoot (1953), McCrea only appeared in western films from 1946 to his retirement in 1976. His most notable western is Ride the High Country (1962), in which he starred with Randolph Scott. Joel McCrea died at the Motion Picture &amp; Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California from pneumonia at the age of 84. His remains were cremated, and the ashes scattered at sea (presumably in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California). After his death his family ultimately donated thirty five acres of McCrea's former ranch to the newly formed Conejo Valley YMCA for the city of Thousand Oaks, California. They also donated 75 acres to the Conejo Open Space Conservancy Agency (COSCA), which designated it the Joel McCrea Wildlife Preserve; and five acres to the Boys and Girls Club of Camarillo.

November 5, 1991: #DOTD: #RIP: Fred MacMurray, American actor and singer who appeared in more than 100 films and a successful television series during a career that spanned nearly a half-century, from 1930 to the 1970s (b. August 30, 1908) #dies of pneumonia at age 83 on at his home in Santa Monica, California. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, Los Angeles County, California. Born Frederick Martin MacMurray, he recorded in 1930 as featured vocalist with the Gus Arnheim Orchestra on "All I Want Is Just One Girl" on the Victor label. and with George Olsen on "I'm In The Market For You" and "After a Million Dreams". Later in the 1930s, MacMurray worked with film director Preston Sturges and actors Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and, in seven films, Claudette Colbert. His career as a major movie leading man began in 1935, but his most renowned role was in director Billy Wilder's 1944 film noir Double Indemnity, with costars Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson. From 1959 through the 1960s, MacMurray appeared in numerous Disney films, including The Absent-Minded Professor, The Happiest Millionaire and The Shaggy Dog. In 1960, he turned to television as Steve Douglas, the widowed patriarch on My Three Sons, which ran on ABC from 1960-1965 and CBS from 1965-1972.

Will Durant, American writer, historian and philosopher, best known for his work The Story of Civilization, 11 volumes written in collaboration with his wife, Ariel Durant, and published between 1935 and 1975 (d. November 7, 1981) is #born William James Durant in North Adams, Massachusetts, to French-Canadian Catholic parents, Joseph Durant and Mary Allard, who had been part of the Quebec emigration to the United States. Will Durant was earlier noted for The Story of Philosophy (1926), described as "a groundbreaking work that helped to popularize philosophy". He conceived of philosophy as total perspective or seeing things sub specie totius (a phrase inspired by Spinoza's sub specie aeternitatis, which roughly means "from the perspective of the eternal"). He sought to unify and humanize the great body of historical knowledge, which had grown voluminous and become fragmented into esoteric specialties, and to vitalize it for contemporary application. The Durants were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 1968 for Rousseau and Revolution, the tenth volume of The Story of Civilization. In 1977 they were presented with the Presidential Medal Of Freedom by Gerald Ford. He met his future wife when she was a student at Ferrer Modern School in New York City. He was then a teacher at the school, but resigned his post to marry Ariel, who was 15 at the time of the wedding, on October 31, 1913. The wedding took place at New York's City Hall, to which she roller-skated from her family's home in Harlem. The couple had one daughter, Ethel Benvenuta, and adopted a son, Louis. The Durants wrote a 420-page joint autobiography, published by Simon and Schuster in 1978 (A Dual Autobiography; later ISBN 0-671-23078-6). Will Durant died in Los Angeles, California two days after his 96th birthday and two weeks after the death of his beloved wife Ariel, and are buried at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. The Durants shared an intense love for one another as they explained in their Dual Autobiography. After Will entered the hospital, Ariel stopped eating, and she died on October 25, 1981. Though their daughter, Ethel, and their grandchildren strove to conceal the news of Ariel's death from the ailing Will, he found out that she had died while he was watching the evening news. Ariel told Ethel's daughter, Monica Mehill, that it was their differences that made them grow.

July 8, 1967) is #born Vivian Mary Hartley in British India on the campus of St. Paul's School, Darjeeling. After her drama school education, Leigh appeared in small roles in four films in 1935 and progressed to the role of heroine in Fire Over England (1937). Lauded for her beauty, Leigh felt that her physical attributes sometimes prevented her from being taken seriously as an actress. Despite her fame as a screen actress, Leigh was primarily a stage performer. During her 30-year career, she played roles ranging from the heroines of Noel Coward and George Bernard Shaw comedies to classic Shakespearean characters such as Ophelia, Cleopatra, Juliet, and Lady Macbeth. Later in life, she performed as a character actress in a few films. At the time, the public strongly identified Leigh with her second husband Laurence Olivier, who was her spouse from 1940 to 1960. Leigh and Olivier starred together in many stage productions, with Olivier often directing, and in three films. She earned a reputation for being difficult to work with, and for much of her adult life she suffered from bipolar disorder as well as recurrent bouts of chronic tuberculosis, which was first diagnosed in the mid-1940s and ultimately claimed her life. In 1960, considering her marriage to be over, Leigh began a relationship with actor John Merivale, who knew of Leigh's medical condition and assured Laurence Olivier that he would care for her. That same year, she and Olivier divorced and Olivier soon married actress Joan Plowright. In his autobiography, Olivier discussed the years of strain they had experienced because of Leigh's illness: "Throughout her possession by that uncannily evil monster, manic depression, with its deadly ever-tightening spirals, she retained her own individual canniness -- an ability to disguise her true mental condition from almost all except me, for whom she could hardly be expected to take the trouble." On the night of July 7, 1967, Merivale left her as usual at their Eaton Square flat in Belgravia, London, England to perform in a play, and he returned home just before midnight to find her asleep. About 30 minutes later (by now July 8), he entered the bedroom and discovered her body on the floor. She had been attempting to walk to the bathroom and, as her lungs filled with liquid, she collapsed and suffocated to death at the age of 53. Merivale first contacted her family and later was able to reach Olivier, who was receiving treatment for prostate cancer in a nearby hospital. In his autobiography, Olivier described his "grievous anguish" as he immediately travelled to Leigh's residence, to find that Merivale had moved her body onto the bed. Olivier paid his respects, and "stood and prayed for forgiveness for all the evils that had sprung up between us", before helping Merivale make funeral arrangements; Olivier stayed until her body was removed from the flat. Her death was publicly announced on July 8, and the lights of every theatre in central London were extinguished for an hour. A Catholic service for Leigh was held at St. Mary's Church, Cadogan Street, London. Her funeral was attended by the luminaries of British stage and screen. According to the provisions of her will, Leigh was cremated at the Golders Green Crematorium and her ashes were scattered on the lake at her summer home, Tickerage Mill, near Blackboys, East Sussex, England. A memorial service was held at St Martin-in-the-Fields, with a final tribute read by John Gielgud. In 1968, Leigh became the first actress honoured in the United States by "The Friends of the Libraries at the University of Southern California". The ceremony was conducted as a memorial service, with selections from her films shown and tributes provided by such associates as George Cukor, who screened the tests that Leigh had made for Gone with the Wind, the first time the screen tests had been seen in 30 years. Although her career had periods of inactivity, in 1999 the American Film Institute ranked Leigh as the 16th greatest female movie star of classic Hollywood cinema.
