October 31 - November 1: Samhain: -- Beginning at nightfall and continuing until sunset on November 1 every year, Samhain is considered one of the most important festivals of the ancient Celtic religion. Samhain is considered to be the time when gods become visible to humankind, and they tend to play tricks on their worshipers. This day used to be a day of fear and danger. Sacrifices were one of the vital rites of the festival as Celts believed they were essential to prevail over the perils before them that the deities could have laid down. For the ancient Celts, Samhain was an agricultural festival that marked the time when summer ended, and people took stock of the food before winter. With the end of the harvest season, it was also considered a time of supernatural intensity when the forces of darkness walked on Earth. Ancient Celtic people used to build large bonfires, hoping to please the gods who would safeguard their livestock and harvest in return. It is also a festival of separation between summer and winter, the light and the dark. It was believed that the normal order of the universe is suspended during Samhain. The barrier between the physical world and the spirit world ceased to exist during this day, which allowed for communication between humans and spirits. To avoid the spirits, Celts disguised themselves in costumes that consisted of animal heads, skins, and horns so that spirits would consider them fellow supernatural beings and not humans. Animals were sacrificed to please the Celtic deities, and people used to take coals from the central fire of bonfires to light their hearths. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV created All Saints Day, which a century later was moved to November 11 - it acted as a Christian substitute to Samhain. Before the saintly celebration was observed on the day of All Hallows Eve or Halloween. From Celtic regions, the holiday started to spread to other places. By the 1800s, the fall festival which marked the seasonal harvest started to have Halloween elements and Irish immigrants, who were escaping the Potato Famine, brought many Halloween traditions to America, which popularized this festival. November 1: Calan Gaeaf: -- Known as "The Mother Of Halloween", Calan Gaeaf is an annual celebration in Wales to welcome winter -- but Calan Gaeaf also celebrates the macabre and creatures of the other world as the days become short and nights become long and chilly -- not your regular old celebration of the cold months! This holiday is especially loved by children who dress up in costumes and carve pumpkins. Calan Gaeaf is a rather unusual celebration that emphasizes ghouls, ghosts, death, and the afterlife. Calan Gaeaf is often believed to be the predecessor of the U.S. festival of Halloween. Celebrated at the very beginning of winter, Calan Gaeaf was a way of getting people ready to prepare for short and cheerless days ahead. The longer nights and cool air turned out to be the perfect setting for a spooky festival. The night before Calan Gaeaf is known as 'Nos Galan Gaeaf,' where spirits are abroad and yet to visit people. On the night before, people stay away from churchyards, stiles, and crossroads to avoid running into spirits. Like festivals that have to do with spirits and ghosts, Calan Gaeaf is also deeply rooted in superstitions. In the early practice of the festival, villagers would dance around a bonfire and everyone would write their names and carve a mark on rocks. These rocks were later placed in the fire. When the fire died out, the villagers would all run home, thinking that if they stayed, 'Yr Hwch Ddu Gwta'' (a spirit in the shape of a tailless black sow with a headless woman) or 'Y Ladi Wen' (a headless ghost apparition) would chase them and devour their souls. The next morning, the villagers would return to see if the rocks still contained their mark. If the mark was wiped clean, it was considered good luck. If, however, a stone was missing, the person to whom it originally belonged was believed to be cursed with bad luck that would result in them dying within a year! November 1-2: The Day Of The Dead (Spanish: Dia de Los Muertos): -- An annual day for Mexicans to welcome the souls of their deceased relatives back for a brief reunion. The day is not one of mourning, but instead an opportunity to portray death in a positive light, as a part of the human experience. When a person dies, it often brings feelings of loss and grief. People in most cultures believe they will never see their deceased love one again. Some, however, feel their departed loved one will always be with them in spirit. They believe their departed loved one sends signs that they are still there and provides help in times of need. One thing many cultures have in common is that when the body dies, it turns into an eternal soul. Where this soul resides is debated among faiths and cultures. Many Mexicans believe they can be reunited with their deceased loved ones. This is what the Day Of The Dead is all about. It's a way to encourage departed loved ones to come back for a brief visit. On this day, those who celebrate it exchange mourning for celebration. Many people celebrate this day by creating Calaveras, which are representations of human skulls. The skulls are brightly colored and contain smiling faces, to show that death is not scary. Many cities in Mexico and the United States have parades where people paint their faces and dress up in costumes. Other ways to celebrate this day include creating offerings at makeshift alters that contain yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and their favorite foods. These offerings encourage visits from departed loved ones. Another way to participate is to watch a movie that features the Day Of The Dead, such as the James Bond movie Spectre or the animated hit Coco. You can also say, "Feliz dia de los Meurtos" or share this day on social media with #DayOfTheDead. The origins of this day go all the way back to the ancient Aztecs. They had a unique view of death and saw it as an ever-present part of life. Upon dying, the Aztecs believed a person traveled to a place called the Land of the Dead. After several years of going through nine challenging levels, their soul could finally come to rest. To aid their departed loved ones for the journey, they often brought food and water to their loved one's graves. For many years, this day was mostly celebrated in the rural, indigenous parts of Mexico. In the 1980s, this celebration began spreading to the cities. UNESCO added the Day Of The Dead to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. In 2016, Mexico City hosted its first-ever Day Of The Dead parade. November 1: Allhallowtide (Hallowtide, Allsaintstide, The Hallowmas Season): All Saints' Day (All Hallows' Day): -- A Christian festival celebrated in honour of all the saints, known and unknown, celebrated in Western Christianity by the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Methodist Church, the Church of the Nazarene, the Lutheran Church, the Reformed Church, and other Protestant churches. All Saints' day is the second day of Allhallowtide, the Western Christian season encompassing the triduum (a religious observance that lasts three days) of All Saints' Eve (Halloween), All Saints' Day (All Hallows' Day) and All Souls' Day, oberved by Roman Catholicis and some Lutherans and Anglicans. In the Western Christian practice, the liturgical celebration begins at Vespers on the evening of October 31, All Hallows' Eve (All Saints' Eve), and ends at the close of November 1. It is thus the day before All Souls' Day, which commemorates the faithful departed. On All Saints Day, it is common for families to attend church, as well as visit cemeteries in order to lay flowers and candles on the graves of their deceased loved ones. In Austria and Germany, godparents gift their godchildren Allerheiligenstriezel (All Saint's Braid) on All Saint's Day, while the practice of souling remains popular in Portugal. It is a national holiday in many historically Christian countries. The Christian celebration of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day stems from a belief that there is a powerful spiritual bond between those in heaven (the "Church triumphant"), and the living (the "Church militant"). In Catholic theology, the day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven. In Methodist theology, All Saints Day revolves around "giving God solemn thanks for the lives and deaths of his saints", including those who are "famous or obscure". As such, individuals throughout the Church Universal are honoured, such as Paul the Apostle, Augustine of Hippo and John Wesley, in addition to individuals who have personally led one to faith in Jesus, such as one's grandmother or friend. In the British Isles, it is known that churches were already celebrating All Saints on 1 November at the beginning of the 8th century to coincide with or replace the Celtic festival of Samhain. James Frazer suggests that 1 November was chosen because it was the date of the Celtic festival of the dead (Samhain). However, Ronald Hutton points out that, according to Oengus of Tallaght (d. ca. 824), the 7th/8th century church in Ireland celebrated All Saints on April 20. He suggests that November 1 date was a Germanic rather than a Celtic idea. November 1: Native American Indian Heritage Month: -- The first day of the commemorative month that aims to provide a platform for Native people in the United States of America to share their culture, traditions, music, crafts, dance, and ways and concepts of life. This gives Native people the opportunity to express to their community, both city, county and state officials their concerns and solutions for building bridges of understanding and friendship in their local area. Federal Agencies are encouraged to provide educational programs for their employees regarding Native American history, rights, culture and contemporary issues, to better assist them in their jobs and for overall awareness. On August 3, 1990, President of the United States George H. W. Bush declared the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. The bill read in part that "The President has authorized and requested to call upon Federal, State and local Governments, groups and organizations and the people of the United States to observe such month with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities". This landmark bill honoring America's Native people represented a major step in the establishment of this celebration which began in 1976 when a Cherokee/Osage Indian named Jerry C. Elliott-High Eagle authored Native American Awareness Week legislation the first historical week of recognition in the nation for native peoples. This led to 1986 with then President Ronald Reagan proclaiming November 23-30, 1986, as "American Indian Week". November 1: Prime Meridian Day: -- In 1884, the prime meridian was defined by the location of the large Airy Transit Circle telescope at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. Sir George Biddell Airy - the seventh Astronomer Royal - designed the legendary telescope in 1850. The Airy Transit Circle's crosshairs defined 0 dg longitude. Today, we celebrate the prime meridian and its applications, including dividing the Earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres and setting up the global time zones. U.S. President Chester A. Arthur played host to the International Meridian Conference held on October 1, 1884, in Washington D.C. The conference was called to set up global time zones and select the 0 dg official longitude, also called the prime meridian. Over 41 delegates representing 25 countries were in attendance. Out of the nations present, Greenwich got affirmative votes from 22 countries, France and Brazil did not vote and Haiti voted against. Prior to the conference, the world lacked a standard prime meridian. Several locations were regarded as 0 dg longitude since lines of longitude are imaginary lines. On October 13, Greenwich in England was declared as the international prime meridian. Prime Meridian Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the occasion. The prime meridian passed through the middle of a transit instrument in the observatory in Greenwich. The observatory would later become the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. The observatory was relocated to Hailsham, East Sussex after the Second World War, even though the prime meridian still went through Greenwich. The Hailsham site would later be called the Observatory Science Center, and after some time, the Royal Observatory was reestablished at Greenwich. The treaty signed at the International Meridian Conference established the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean at 180 dg longitude. Several meridians exist, there is one for every 15_ with a one-hour time difference between them. However, some countries do not follow the hour change rule. China, for example, employs a single time zone, despite having five meridians crossing its terrain. The Sistine Chapel (Latin: Sacellum Sixtinum; Italian: Cappella Sistina) is a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the pope, in Vatican City. Originally known as the Cappella Magna ('Great Chapel'), the chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who restored it between 1473 and 1481. Pope Sixtus IV celebrated the first mass in the Sistine Chapel to have occurred after restoration had begun on August 15, 1483 for the Feast of the Assumption, at which ceremony the chapel was consecrated and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, all following the completion of a series of frescos depicting Moses, Christ and Popes by Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Pinturicchio, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli. Since that time, the chapel has served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. Today, it is the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. The fame of the Sistine Chapel lies mainly in the frescos that decorate the interior, most particularly the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment by Michelangelo. Between 1508 and 1512, under the patronage of Pope Julius II, Michelangelo painted the chapel's ceiling, a project which changed the course of Western art and is regarded as one of the major artistic accomplishments of human civilization. In a different climate, after the Sack Of Rome, he returned and, between 1535 and 1541, painted The Last Judgment for Popes Clement VII and Paul III. The fame of Michelangelo's paintings has drawn multitudes of visitors to the chapel ever since they were exhibited to the public for the first time on November 1, 1512. November 1, 1861: The American Civil War (The Civil War, The War Between The States): The Western Theater Of The American Civil War: -- U.S. President Abraham Lincoln appoints George B. McClellan as Commanding General of the United States Army (Commander of the Union Army), replacing General Winfield Scott. George Brinton McClellan (December 3, 1826 - October 29, 1885) was an American soldier, civil engineer, railroad executive, and politician who served as the 24th Governor of New Jersey. A graduate of West Point, McClellan served with distinction during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), and later left the Army to work on railroads until the outbreak of the American Civil War (1861-1865). Early in the conflict, McClellan was appointed to the rank of major general and played an important role in raising a well-trained and organized army, which would become The Army Of The Potomac in the Eastern Theater; he served a brief period (November 1861 to March 1862) as Commanding General of the United States Army of the Union Army. McClellan organized and led the Union army in the Peninsula Campaign in southeastern Virginia from March through July 1862. It was the first large-scale offensive in the Eastern Theater. Making an amphibious clockwise turning movement around the Confederate Army in northern Virginia, McClellan's forces turned west to move up the Virginia Peninsula, between the James River and York River, landing from Chesapeake Bay, with the Confederate capital, Richmond, as their objective. Initially, McClellan was somewhat successful against General Joseph E. Johnston, but the emergence of General Robert E. Lee to command The Army Of Northern Virginia turned the subsequent Seven Days Battles into a partial Union defeat. However, historians note that Lee's victory was in many ways pyrrhic as he failed to destroy The Army Of The Potomac and suffered a bloody repulse at Malvern Hill. General McClellan and President Abraham Lincoln developed a mutual distrust, and McClellan was privately derisive of his General-in-Chief. McClellan was removed from command in November in the aftermath of the 1862 midterm elections. A major contributing factor in this decision was McClellan's failure to pursue Lee's Army following the tactically inconclusive but strategic Union victory at the Battle Of Antietam outside Sharpsburg, Maryland. McClellan never received another field command and went on to become the unsuccessful Democratic Party nominee in the 1864 presidential election against the Republican Lincoln. The effectiveness of his campaign was damaged when he repudiated his party's platform, which promised an end to the war and negotiations with the Confederacy. He served as the 24th Governor of New Jersey from 1878 to 1881; he eventually became a writer, and vigorously defended his Civil War conduct. Most historians have judged that McClellan was a poor battlefield general. In recent decades, however, this view has been challenged by some historians. November 1, 1936: Fascism: The Interwar Period (The Aftermath Of World War I, The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Road To War: The Axis Powers (the Rome-Berlin Axis, The Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis): The Nineteen-Point Protocol: -- Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, declaring that all other European countries would from then on rotate on the Rome-Berlin axis, thus originating the use of the term "Axis" to describe what became known as "The Axis Powers", proclaims the establishment of the Rome-Berlin Axis following the signing of The Nineteen-Point Protocol by the Foreign Minister of Germany Konstantin Von Neurath during a visit to Berlin by Mussolini's Foreign Minister and son-in-law Galeazzo Ciano (whom Mussolini later executed) who countersigned the protocol. The Axis Powers (German: Achsenmachte; Italian: Potenze dell'Asse; Japanese: Sujikukoku), also known as "Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis" was a military alliance that fought in World War II against the Allies. The Axis Powers agreed on their opposition to the Allies, but did not completely coordinate their activity. The Axis grew out of the diplomatic efforts of Germany, Italy, and Japan to secure their own specific expansionist interests in the mid-1930s. The first step was the Nineteen-Point Protocol signed by Germany and Italy. The almost simultaneous second step was the signing in November 1936 of the Anti-Comintern Pact, an anti-communist treaty between Germany and Japan. Italy and Spain joined the Pact in 1937. The "Rome-Berlin Axis" became a military alliance in 1939 under the so-called "Pact of Steel", with the Tripartite Pact of 1940 leading to the integration of the military aims of Germany, Italy and Japan. As such the Anti-Comintern Pact, the Tripartite Pact, and the Pact of Steel were the agreements that formed the main basis of the Axis. At its zenith in 1942 during World War II, the Axis presided over territories that occupied large parts of Europe, North Africa, and East Asia. There were no three-way summit meetings and cooperation and coordination was minimal, with slightly more between Germany and Italy. The war ended in 1945 with the defeat of the Axis powers and the dissolution of their alliance. As in the case of the Allies, membership of the Axis was fluid, with some nations switching sides or changing their degree of military involvement over the course of the war. November 1, 1950: Religion: The History Of Religion: Abrahamic Religions: Christianity: The History Of Roman Catholicism: Dogma In The Catholic Church: Catholic Mariology: Papal Infallibility: Apostolic Constitutions (Latin: Constitutio Apostolici): The Assumption Of Mary: Munificentissimus Deus (Latin: The Most Bountiful God): -- Pope Pius XII claims papal infallibility on All Saint's Day when he formally defines the dogma of the Assumption of Mary. The Assumption of Mary into Heaven (often shortened to the Assumption) is, according to the beliefs of the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Churches, Oriental Orthodoxy, Church of the East, and some Anglo-Catholic Churches, among others, the bodily taking up (entering heaven alive, called by various religions "ascension", "assumption", or "translation") of Mary, the mother of Jesus, into Heaven (the Heavens; in Christianity, traditionally the location of the throne of God and the angels of God, and in most forms of Christianity, the abode of the righteous dead in the afterlife) at the end of her earthly life. In the churches that observe it, the Assumption is a major feast day, commonly celebrated on August 15. In many countries, the feast is also marked as a Holy Day of Obligation in the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church teaches as dogma that the Virgin Mary "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory". This doctrine was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1 1950, in the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus by exercising papal infallibility. While the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church believe in the Dormition of the Mother of God (Dormition of the Theotokos or "the Falling Asleep of the Mother of God"), whether Mary had a physical death has not been dogmatically defined. In Munificentissimus Deus (item 39) Pope Pius XII pointed to the Book of Genesis (3:15) as scriptural support for the dogma in terms of Mary's victory over sin and death through her intimate association with "the new Adam" (Christ) as also reflected in 1 Corinthians 15:54: "then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory". The New Testament contains no explicit narrative about the death or dormition, nor of the Assumption of Mary, but several scriptural passages have been theologically interpreted to describe the ultimate fate in this and the afterworld of the Mother of Jesus. Various apocryphal documents do contain narrations of the event. On this same day, November 1, 1950, as well as on October 30, October 31 and November 8, Pope Pius XII witnessed from the Vatican gardens what he himself attest to as being the same "Miracle Of The Sun", the same phenomena that became known as The Miracle Of Fatima or The Fatima Object, witnessed by an estimated 70,000 people in the Cova da Iria in Fatima, Portugal on October 13, 1917, and the Pope affirmed that he believed this sightings were a heavenly confirmation that his contemplation at that very moment in time to declare the Assumption of Mary as Catholic dogma was correct and had heavenly approval. At a gathering on October 13, 1951 at Fatima, the papal legate, Cardinal Federico Tedeschini, told the million people attending that these sightings had occurred; the Pope himself attested to this in his own handwritten, unpublished note, which was publicly displayed by the Vatican as part of the "Pius XII: The Man and the Pontificate" display in 2004, in which Pius XII wrote, "I have seen the 'Miracle Of The Sun,' this is the pure truth." The note was found in the Pacelli family archives. It describes the "Miracle Of The Sun," an episode that until today had only been affirmed by the indirect testimony of Cardinal Federico Tedeschini (1873-1959), who recounted in a homily that the Holy Father had seen the miracle. The Miracle Of The Sun is most known as the episode that occurred in Fatima, Portugal, on Oct. 13, 1917. According to the Fatima visionaries, Mary had said there would be a miracle that day so that people would come to believe. Thousands had gathered at the site of the visions, and the sun "danced," reportedly drying instantaneously the rain-soaked land and spectators. Pius XII's note says that he saw the miracle in the year he was to proclaim the dogma of the Assumption, 1950, while he walked in the Vatican Gardens. He said he saw the phenomenon various times, considering it a confirmation of his plan to declare the dogma. The papal note says that at 4 p.m. on Oct. 30, 1950, during his "habitual walk in the Vatican Gardens, reading and studying," having arrived to the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, "toward the top of the hill [_] I was awestruck by a phenomenon that before now I had never seen." "The sun, which was still quite high, looked like a pale, opaque sphere, entirely surrounded by a luminous circle," he recounted. And one could look at the sun, "without the slightest bother. There was a very light little cloud in front of it." The Holy Father's note goes on to describe "the opaque sphere" that "moved outward slightly, either spinning, or moving from left to right and vice versa. But within the sphere, you could see marked movements with total clarity and without interruption." Pius XII said he saw the same phenomenon "the 31st of October and Nov. 1, the day of the definition of the dogma of the Assumption, and then again Nov. 8, and after that, no more." The Pope acknowledged that on other days at about the same hour, he tried to see if the phenomenon would be repeated, "but in vain - I couldn't fix my gaze [on the sun] for even an instant; my eyes would be dazzled." Pius XII spoke about the incident with a few cardinals and close collaborators, such that Sister Pascalina Lehnert, the nun in charge of the papal apartments, declared that "Pius XII was very convinced of the reality of the extraordinary phenomenon, which he had seen on four occasions." There was always a close link between the life of Eugenio Pacelli and the mystery of the Virgin Mary. Since childhood, Eugenio Pacelli was devoted [to Our Lady] and was registered in the Congregation of the Assumption, which had a chapel close to the Church of Jesus. A devotion that seemed prophetic, since he would be precisely the one to declare the dogma of the Assumption in 1950." The future Pope celebrated his first Mass on April 3, 1899, at the altar of the icon of Mary "Salus Populi Romani" in the Basilica of St. Mary Major. "And then," Tornielli continued, "Eugenio Pacelli received episcopal ordination from Pope Benedict XV in the Sistine Chapel on May 13, 1917, the day of the first apparition of the Virgin of Fatima." As Pope, in 1940, he approved the Fatima apparitions, and in 1942, consecrated the entire world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. As well, Pius XII often spoke with Sister Lucia, the visionary of Fatima, and he asked her to transcribe the messages she received from the Virgin. He thus became the first Pope to know the "third secret of Fatima," which Pope John Paul II would later make public. On October 13, 1917: The "Miracle Of The Sun", also known as The Miracle Of Fatima or The Fatima Object, was by 30,000 to 100,000 people gathered near Fatima, Portugal. Several newspaper reporters were in attendance and they took testimony from many people who claimed to have witnessed extraordinary solar activity. According to these reports, the event lasted approximately ten minutes. The three children (Lucia dos Santos, Jacinta Marto and Francisco Marto) who originally claimed to have seen Our Lady Of Fatima also reported seeing a panorama of visions, including those of Jesus, Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, and of Saint Joseph blessing the people. The event was officially accepted as a miracle by the Catholic Church on October 13 1930. It is believed by some researchers to be a disc shaped Unidentified Flying Object (UFO). November 1, 1950: United States Presidential Assassination Attempts And Plots: United States Presidential Assassination Attempts And Plots: The Attempted Assassinations Of Harry S. Truman: The Second Attempted Assassination Of Harry S. Truman: -- Harry S. Truman is the target of an unsuccessful assassination attempt by Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo, Puerto Rican Nationalist Party members, at the President's temporary residence during White House renovations, Blair House. Both men were stopped before gaining entry to the house. Torresola mortally wounded White House Police officer Leslie Coffelt, who killed him in return fire. Secret Service agents wounded Collazo. President Harry S. Truman was upstairs in the house and not harmed. In the 1940s, the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico had little political power in the country, where voters had elected the Popular Democratic Party of Puerto Rico (PPD) as the majority in the legislature. Nationalists believed that Puerto Rico suffered under American colonialism and wanted independence. The Popular Democratic Party of Puerto Rico (PPD) was supporting negotiations with the United States to create a "new" political status for the island. The Puerto Rican Nationalist Party Revolts of the 1950s were an armed protest for independence from United States Government rule over Puerto Rico. The Party repudiated the "Free Associated State" (Estado Libre Asociado) status that had been enacted in 1950, as the Nationalists considered it to be a continuation of colonialism. The revolts began on October 30, 1950, upon the orders of Pedro Albizu Campos, president of the Nationalist Party. Uprisings occurred in Penuelas, Mayaguez, Naranjito, Arecibo and Ponce. The most notable uprisings occurred in Utuado, Jayuya, and San Juan. These were suppressed by strong military force, including the use of planes. In New York City, Nationalists Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo developed a plan to assassinate President Harry S. Truman in order to raise awareness of the drive for independence. They wanted to show that the October 30 uprising had not been an "incident between Puerto Ricans" as described by President Truman, but was an act of rebellion and war between two countries. They had learned that Truman was living at the Blair House, while the White House was renovated. The two men realized that their attempt was near-suicidal, and that they likely would be killed. They wanted to bring world attention to the government killings of rebels and associates in Puerto Rico, and the drive for independence. Torresola, a skilled gunman, taught Collazo how to load and handle the guns they would use, as his experience had been with other types. They took the train from New York to Washington, DC to reconnoiter the area. On November 1, 1950, they moved into action. Torresola approached Blair House, located on Pennsylvania Avenue, from the west side, while Collazo walked up behind Capitol police officer, Donald Birdzell, who was standing on the steps of the Blair House. President Truman was napping in his quarters on the second floor. Collazo tried to shoot Birdzell in the back, but had failed to chamber a round in his pistol, and the gun did not fire. Collazo chambered a round and fired the weapon just as Birdzell was turning to face him, and shot the officer in his right knee. After hearing the gunshots, Secret Service agent Vincent Mroz ran through a basement corridor, stepping out of a street-level door on the east side of the House, where he opened fire on Collazo. Mroz stopped Collazo with a bullet to the chest while he was on the entrance steps. Two other officers also shot Collazo, in what was described as "the biggest gunfight in Secret Service history." Meanwhile, Torresola had approached a guard booth at the west corner, where he took White House Police officer Leslie Coffelt by surprise, shooting four times at close range and mortally wounding him with a 9_19mm German Luger. Three of those shots struck Coffelt in the chest and abdomen; the fourth went through his tunic. Torresola shot police officer Joseph Downs in the hip, before he could draw his weapon. As Downs turned toward the house, Torresola shot him in the back and in the neck. Downs got into the basement and secured the door, denying the attacker entry into the Blair House. Torresola moved to the shoot-out between his partner Collazo and several other police officers, shooting officer Donald Birdzell in the left knee. Birdzell could no longer stand and was effectively incapacitated, although he would later recover. Torresola was standing to the left of the Blair House steps to reload when President Truman looked outside his second floor window, 31 feet (9.4 m) from the attacker. Secret Service agents shouted at Truman to get away from the window. At that same moment, Coffelt left the guard booth, propped against it, and fired his .38-caliber service revolver at Torresola, about 30 feet (10 m) away. Coffelt hit Torresola 2 inches (50 mm) above the ear, killing him instantly. Coffelt limped back to the booth and blacked out. Taken to the hospital, Coffelt died four hours later. The gunfight involving Torresola lasted approximately 20 seconds, while the gunfight with Collazo lasted approximately 38.5 seconds. Only one of Collazo's shots hit anyone, largely because Collazo was not a skilled or experienced gunman. Torresola, an expert shooter, did most of the shooting and inflicted almost all of the injuries on the Secret Service officers. Afterwards, Truman commented that he was not frightened by the attack: since he was a combat veteran of the First World War, he "had [already] been shot at by professionals [i.e. German soldiers]." President Truman and the Secretary Of State Dean Acheson asked Coffelt's widow, Cressie E. Coffelt, to go to Puerto Rico, where she received condolences from various Puerto Rican leaders and crowds. Mrs. Coffelt responded with a speech absolving the island's people of blame for the acts of Collazo and Torresola. Oscar Collazo was convicted in federal court and sentenced to death, which Truman commuted to a life sentence. While in prison, he gave an interview telling of his long devotion to the Nationalist Party and cause of Puerto Rican independence. When he was a young man in 1932, he heard Pedro Albizu Campos give a speech about American imperialism, saying that American research doctor Cornelius P. Rhoads had written an outrageous letter appearing to brag about killing Puerto Ricans in experiments. (Cornelius Packard "Dusty" Rhoads (June 9, 1898-August 13, 1959) was an American pathologist, oncologist, and hospital administrator who was involved in a racism and unethical human experimentation scandal and subsequent whitewashing in the 1930s. Beginning in 1940, he served as director of Memorial Hospital for Cancer Research in New York, from 1945 was the first director of Sloan-Kettering Institute, and the first director of the combined Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. For his contributions to cancer research, Rhoads was featured on the cover of the June 27, 1949 issue of Time magazine under the title "Cancer Fighter".) In 1979, President Jimmy Carter commuted the sentence of Collazo to the time served, and the former revolutionary was released. He returned to live in Puerto Rico, where he died in 1994. At the time of the assassination attempt, the FBI arrested Collazo's wife, Rosa, on suspicion of having conspired with her husband in the plan. She spent eight months in federal prison but did not go to trial. Upon her release, Rosa continued to work with the Nationalist Party. She helped gather 100,000 signatures in an effort to save her husband from execution. Acknowledging the importance of the question of Puerto Rico's status, Truman supported a plebiscite in Puerto Rico in 1952 on the new constitution to determine its relationship to the U.S. The people voted 81.9% in favor of continuing as a Free Associated State, as established in 1950. Inside the Blair House, a plaque was installed to commemorate White House Police officer Leslie Coffelt. The day room for the U.S. Secret Service's Uniformed Division at the Blair House is named for Coffelt as well. (NOTE: The First Attempted Assassination Of Harry S. Truman occurred in the summer of 1947, when a letter bomb was sent to Truman by the Stern Gang (Official name: Lohamei Herut Israel (Lehi), "Fighters For The Freedom Of Israel") a Zionist paramilitary organization founded by Avraham ("Yair") Stern in Mandatory Palestine that used terrorist means in its action (whose notable members included Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir among others), at the same time they had sent similar such letter bombs to Anthony Eden, Ernest Bevin and others. This attempt was revealed by Margaret Truman Daniel, the daughter of President Trumn, in a 1972 biography of her father entitled "Harry S. Truman". November 1, 1952: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: Nuclear Warfare: Nuclear Weapons Testing: American Nuclear Warfare: American Nuclear Weapons Testing: Operation Ivy: Ivy Mike: -- History's first thermonuclear device (Hydrogen Bomb, H-Bomb) is detonated at the Elugelab Atoll in the Eniwetok Proving Grounds in the Pacific Marshall Islands in the now independent island nation of the Marshall Islands. The explosion had a yield of ten megatons TNT equivalent. Ivy Mike was the codename given to the first full-scale test of a thermonuclear device, in which part of the explosive yield comes from nuclear fusion. It was the first full test of the Teller-Ulam design, a staged fusion device. Due to its physical size and fusion fuel type (cryogenic liquid deuterium), the "Mike" device was not suitable for use as a deliverable weapon. It was intended as a "technically conservative" proof of concept experiment to validate the concepts used for multi-megaton detonations. As a result of the collection of samples from the explosion by U.S. Air force pilots (one of whom died in the process), scientists found traces of the isotopes plutonium-246 and plutonium-244, and confirmed the existence of the predicted but undiscovered elements einsteinium and fermium. ========= November 1, 1951: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: Nuclear Warfare: Nuclear Weapons Testing: American Nuclear Warfare: American Nuclear Weapons Testing: Operation Buster-Jangle: -- A series of seven (six atmospheric, one cratering) nuclear weapons tests conducted by the United States in late 1951 at the Nevada Test Site during Operation Buster-Jangle, the first joint test program between the U.S. Department of Defense (Operation Buster) and Los Alamos National Laboratories (Operation Jangle). As part of Operation Buster, six thousand five hundred American soldiers are exposed to the "Desert Rock" atomic explosions of the Operation Desert Rock I, II, and III exercises for training purposes in Nevada. Participation is not voluntary. Operation Jangle, the last two tests, evaluated the cratering effects of low-yield nuclear devices. This series preceded Operation Tumbler-Snapper and followed Operation Greenhouse. Four U.S. Army units took part in the Operation Buster-Jangle "Dog" test of Desert Rock I for combat maneuvers after the detonation of a nuclear weapon took place. These units consisted of: 1st Battalion 188th Airborne Infantry Regiment 11th Airborne Division; 3rd Medical Platoon 188th Airborne Medical Company; Platoon Company A 127th Engineer Battalion; and Battery C 546th Field Artillery Battalion. Personnel were instructed to create foxholes, construct gun emplacements and bunkers in a defensive position 11 km south of the detonation area. After the nuclear bomb was detonated, the troops were ordered to move forward towards the affected area. While traveling closer to ground zero, troops witnessed the nuclear weapon's effects on the fortifications that were placed in the location in preparation for the tests. The ground troops got as close as 900 meters from ground zero before they were instructed to move out of the area. The Human Resources Research Office was tasked with gathering data on the psychological experiences of the troops after witnessing such a detonation and moving closer towards the affected area. For the Operation Buster-Jangle series of tests, the Atomic Energy Commission created a set of criteria that must be followed if exposing armed forces, or civilians to the harmful effects of ionizing radiation: Orientation and proper radiological training; Dispersion of dosimeters amongst personnel; Utilization of radiological protective equipment and clothing; Active monitoring of radiological levels; Briefing of personnel taking part in the exercise; and Decontamination of radioactive debris. A majority of the personnel that took part in the exercise received around 3 Roentgens of radiation, with pilots receiving an average of 3.9 Roentgens. These estimates vary given the differing data provided by the Department of Defense over the years. ========= November 1, 1962: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: Nuclear Warfare: Nuclear Weapons Testing: American Nuclear Warfare: American Nuclear Weapons Testing: Operation Fishbowl: -- The Kingfish detonation occurrs at 0210 Johnston Island time, becoming the fourth successful detonation of the Fishbowl series. It was officially reported only as being a submegaton explosion (meaning in the range of more than 200 kilotons, but less than a megaton), but most independent observers believe that it used the same 400 kiloton warhead as the Bluegill Triple Prime test, although one report by the U.S. federal government reported the test yield as 200 kilotons. As with the other Fishbowl tests, a number of small rockets with various scientific instrumentation were launched from Johnson Island to monitor the effects of the high-altitude explosion. In the case of the Kingfish test, 29 rockets were launched from Johnston Island in addition to the Thor rocket carrying the nuclear warhead. According to the official report, at the time of the Kingfish detonation, "Johnston Island observers saw a yellow-white, luminous circle with intense purple streamers for the first minute. Some of the streamers displayed what appeared to be a rapid twisting motion at times. A large pale-green patch appeared somewhat south of the burst and grew, becoming the dominant visible feature after 5 minutes. By H+1 the green had become dull gray, but the feature persisted for 3 hours. At Oahu a bright flash was observed and after about 10 seconds a great white ball appeared to rise slowly out of the sea and was visible for about 9 minutes." After most of the electromagnetic pulse measurements on Starfish Prime had failed because the EMP was so much larger than expected, extra care was taken to obtain accurate EMP measurements on the Bluegill Triple Prime and Kingfish tests. The EMP mechanism that had been hypothesized before Operation Fishbowl had been conclusively disproven by the Starfish Prime test. Prompt gamma ray output measurements on these later tests were also carefully obtained so that a new theory of the mechanism for high-altitude EMP could be developed and confirmed. That new theory about the generation of nuclear EMP was developed by Los Alamos physicist Conrad Longmire in 1963, and it is the high-altitude nuclear EMP theory that is still used today. As of the beginning of 2011, the EMP waveforms and prompt gamma radiation outputs for Bluegill Triple Prime and Kingfish remain classified. An unclassified report, however, confirms that these measurements were successfully made and that a subsequent theory (which is the one now used) was developed which describes the mechanism by which the high-altitude EMP is generated. That new theory does give results which are consistent with both the Bluegill Triple Prime and Kingfish data. (The report actually using the Bluegill Triple Prime and Kingfish data to confirm the new EMP theory is the still-classified Part 2 of the unclassified report by Conrad Longmire.) According to a Sandia National Laboratories report, EMP generated during the Operation Fishbowl tests caused "... input circuit troubles in radio receivers during the Starfish and Checkmate bursts; the triggering of surge arresters on an airplane with a trailing-wire antenna during Starfish, Checkmate, and Bluegill; and the Oahu streetlight incident." (The "Oahu Streetlight Incident" refers to the 300 streetlights in Honolulu extinguished by the Starfish Prime detonation.) She was originally laid down as the attack submarine USS Scorpion (SSN-589). During construction, she was lengthened by the insertion of a 130 ft (40 m)-long ballistic missile section and renamed George Washington. Because the ballistic missile compartment design of George Washington was intended to be reused in later ship classes, the section inserted into George Washington was designed with a deeper test depth rating than the rest of the submarine. She was launched on June 9, 1959, sponsored by Mrs. Ollie Mae Anderson (nee Rawlins), wife of US Treasury Secretary and former Secretary of the Navy Robert B. Anderson. She was commissioned on December 30, 1959 as SSBN-598 with Commander James B. Osborn in command of the Blue crew (the crew that staffed her during her first deterrent patrol) and Commander John L. From, Jr. in command of the Gold crew (the shakedown crew). The first and lead ship of her class of nuclear ballistic missile submarines, she was the third United States Navy ship of the name, in honor of Founding Father George Washington (1732-1799), the first president of the United States, and was the first of that name to be purpose-built as a warship. November 1: World Vegan Day: -- World Vegan Day is celebrated on November 1 and it amazes us to see how far this movement has come! Remember when veganism appeared to have started off just as a diet fad (even though it's been practiced for millennia)? What was apparently a "fad" then eventually grew into a lifestyle option! The joys and benefits of veganism are advocated on this dedicated day, highlighting just how easy it is to go for this cruelty-free lifestyle as well as generate awareness on rights for our furry friends. Vegans of note include Benjamin Spock, Berry Gordy, Don Imus, Casey Kasem, Coretta Scott King, Carl Lewis, Peter Max, Brian May, Demi Moore, Al Gore, Larry Hagman, Cory Booker, Lenny Kravitz, James Cameron, Cesar Chavez, Linda Blair, Daryl Hannah, Woody Harrelson, Joaquin Phoenix, Greta Thunberg, Natalie Portman, Robin Quivers, Adam Schiff, Kevin Smith, Rob Zombie -- even Mahatma Gandhi would be considered a vegan! ! Even though veganism calls for the rejection of all animal-based products, a plant-based diet is the best way to encourage this change; with thousands of delicious vegan recipes or altered versions of meat and dairy dishes posted online. Across the globe, this day is celebrated exuberantly through exhibitions, seminars, restaurant specials, and events. This one day allows countless opportunities for vegans to promote their lifestyle as well as for anyone wishing to adopt it. But this green movement did not just begin with herbivores. In 1944, two members of 'The Vegetarian Society UK' - Donald Watson and Elise Shrigley, were at crossroads with the club. In addition to removing meat from their daily intake, they also avoided products made from or tested on animals. Yet, the society did not recognize their lifestyle as unique, leading the pair to create 'The Vegan Society.' In honor of the 50th birthday celebration of The Vegan Society in 1994, UK celebrity and then Chairman of the Vegan Society - Louise Wallis, decided to commemorate November 1 as World Vegan Day. The terms vegan and veganism were also coined by him. While deciding on a date, there was a lot of ambiguity as to which date exactly in 1944 was The Vegan Society founded. Aware of Halloween and Day of the Dead, Wallis selected the first of November. The rest, as they say, is history. The movement has been gaining traction lately, with a lot of its popularity owed to prominent celebrities who have committed to veganism over the past few years. Included among these are Ellen DeGeneres, Zac Effron, Ariana Grande, Pamela Anderson, and many more. The most challenging shift towards veganism has been for food chains. Fortunately, what was once thought of as a finicky diet, is now widely available at restaurants and supermarkets, offering a plethora of plant-based alternatives. Fast-food chains like KFC and Burger King also offer vegan burgers now, so we can all let out a sigh of relief now and still get our fast food fix. https://store.earthstation1.com/kebrcoflkibi.html

Did you know that cinnamon, according to Chinese medicine, can be used to treat illnesses both minor and major? Cinnamon has been around for over 4,000 years! No wonder we can get a lot of healthiness out of it. National Cinnamon Day celebrates one of the most popular holiday spices. It is quite impossible to think of the holidays without the aroma of cinnamon popping into one's head. From cookies, rolls, and teas to pies and chocolates, cinnamon exists in almost every holiday snack, meal, and beverage. McCormick spices founded National Cinnamon Day in 2019. The holiday encourages us to make new memories and share the warmth cinnamon brings with it. It is dedicated to celebrating the versatile nature of cinnamon by highlighting its deliciousness and plethora of health benefits. Cinnamon is obtained from the dried inner bark of several tree species in the Laurel family ('Lauraceae'). We use the sticks or the powder form for everything consumable. Even though initially hidden for market gains, cinnamon has been around for very long, even though there are many myths and theories surrounding how it is sourced. Presently, Indonesia and China are the major producers, making up for 70% of the worldwide production. At the same time, the rest of the world focuses on creating new recipes, finding new uses, and exploring the health benefits of cinnamon. The world has generated the many directions of cinnamon; from producing to consuming to selling - it is a commodity everywhere. https://store.earthstation1.com/christmas-radio-mp3-dvd-old-time-broadcast-antholog3.html

November 1: National Vinegar Day: -- Science experiments and home remedies, a cooking staple and a sour smell. Today we're talking about and celebrating one of the mysteries of the kitchen that seems as at home under the sink as it does in the pantry: Vinegar. With so many uses, benefits, and recipes, it's no wonder why the whole country will be celebrating National Vinegar Day on November 1. If someone asked you what vinegar is, could you explain it? This typically falls under the umbrella of information we file away in the "things we say we know but hope no one will ask about" folder, along with how pineapples grow and how magnets work. In short, vinegar is made by fermenting something passed the point of an alcoholic drink until it's acidic. This is why we have different kinds of vinegars, just as we have different kinds of wines and liqueurs. So get ready to try something new and learn more about this complex concoction we rarely think twice about. https://store.earthstation1.com/appointment-with-destiny-the-crucifixion-of-jesus-dvd.html

This November 1, celebrate National Author's Day by curling up with your favorite book, a hot beverage, and spending time drifting into another world. In order to appreciate the writers who help inspire us, it's important to get a sense of the time, blood, sweat, and tears that go into getting words on the page. Whether it's fiction, fantasy, or biographies, books play a major role in our lives and we must celebrate their creators! Today, take a moment to appreciate the author(s) that spent countless hours writing your favorite books. The renowned French philosopher, Michel Foucault, once asked, "What is an author?" He argued that the idea of authorship - of accrediting the work to a single individual - has deep effects on its interpretation by the reader. Further, heady, philosophical arguments ensued but the bottom line remains - authors are creators, through and through. They are, more or less, the ones who have written novels, poems, graphic novels, textbooks, and so much more. From William Shakespeare being the most famous of authors (and, debatably, a number of authors operating under one pen name), back in the 1500s, enthralling and satirizing royalty and common people in ways that still resonate today; all the way to J.K. Rowling and Stephen King, who can create both fantastical and horrifying worlds and landscapes that allow us to reflect and provide insight on our own more mundane realities. Regardless of what time period or where they're from, authors have always had the ability to teach, entertain, and move us - even back to old, blind Homer, telling his "Odyssey" without even writing it down. That brings us back to Foucault's question. Homer never actually wrote a word. He recited his poems aloud to whoever would listen and, as he gained followers, they committed his words to paper. Yet history has forgotten the writers and gifted us Homer as the author of the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey". So what is an author? Well, historically and permanently, it's someone who uses their words to move their followers. Writers conduct in-depth research and, in many cases, spend years perfecting what we eventually read. That's years of drafting, editing, revising, and rewriting these stories that captivate us. They deserve all the thanks we can offer. In 1928, the president of the Illinois Women's Club, Nellie Verne Burt McPherson, came up with the idea to create a day that recognized American authors. She was an educator and quite an avid reader. The inspiration for the holiday came while she was in the hospital during the First World War. She had just read Irving Bacheller's "Eben Holden's Last Day A-Fishing" and sent a letter to him expressing her love for the book. After receiving the letter, he responded by forwarding a signed copy of another one of his stories to her. McPherson, overwhelmed by his generosity, thought of a way to repay the gesture. She concluded that a National day for authors would do the trick and presented the idea to the Generation Federation of Women's Clubs. The club approved, and in May 1929, issued an endorsement to celebrate American Authors on National Author's Day. The U.S. Department of Commerce acknowledged National Author's Day in 1949. Although it took 20 years, McPherson's vision finally became a reality and the holiday has been celebrated across the country every year since. McPherson's granddaughter, Sue Cole, took on the responsibility of promoting the holiday when her grandmother passed away in 1968. She urges people to send appreciation notes to their favorite authors to celebrate their contributions towards making life easier. The idea is to recognize all the people who have contributed to American literature. https://store.earthstation1.com/is-there-one-who-understands-me-the-world-of-james-joyce-dvd.html

November 1: National Family Literacy Day: -- Families, gather around! Families who read together succeed together. There are more reasons than ever before for families to read aloud to their children from a young age. Besides the fact that reading creates quiet, quality family time, it develops early vocabulary skills. It expands their attention span and yours. Read chapter books even to your youngest child. They may drift off to sleep, but they are listening and their attention span will lengthen. It's free. Books can be checked out from the library. You can read well above a child's level, and they will still listen and comprehend. It improves listening skills. It's portable. Reading is a tool that can never be unlearned. Once a child learns to read, they never stop. You'll know because you'll have to stop spelling certain words to your spouse. It improves imagination and creativity. Reading opens up a dialogue between parent and child. Celebrated across America, this day focuses on special activities and events that showcase the importance of family literacy programs. Attend a program or activity at a school or library near you. Get together with family and read a book together. https://store.earthstation1.com/washington-dc-history-videos-dvd-mp4-download-usb-driv4.html

November 1: Autistics Speaking Day: -- We all look at the world in our own unique ways. However, people with autism experience the world differently from most of us. They approach the world in often novel ways. Maybe one of the most important ways we all connect to and understand the world is through communication. Today encourages autistic people to tell their stories using whatever means works for them. And everyone else is encouraged to listen, hear, read and comprehend their stories from their point of view. On November 1, autistic people will flood the internet with their challenges and their celebrations, their interests and their dislikes. They will speak about their rights and advocacy in many languages. Some may speak with art, others with poetry or memes. They may also be speaking through podcasts. Their words and stories may be difficult to hear, but they will be speaking. But, most importantly, they will be speaking about themselves for themselves. And if you want to understand, it will be a day for you to listen. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-mysterious-mr-tesla-dvd-nikola-tesla-documentary.html

November 1: Chronology: Calendars: The Months Of The Year: -- November begins, eleventh month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, the latter being the most widely used calendar in the world. November succeeds October and precedes December. November is a month of late autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and late spring in the Southern Hemisphere. November retained its name (from Latin and Greek octo meaning "nine") because it was the 9th month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, with March being the first month of the year. About 700 BC, it became the eleventh month when January and February were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius. Ancient Roman observances for November include Ludi Plebeii (Latin, "The Plebeian Games"), held from November 4 to November 17; Epulum Jovis, a ritual feast of The Ides Of November held on November 13; and Brumalia, a winter solstice festival celebrated in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, begin on November 24. Among the Anglo-Saxons, November was known as Blotmonath (Anglo Saxon: Blot, "Sacrifice" and Monath, "Month"), because it was in this month that the cattle which were to be offered as sacrifices to the gods were slaughtered. October corresponds partly to the month of Brumaire and partly to the month of Frimaire of The French Republican Calendar. October's birthstones are topaz, especially yellow topaz, and citrine, a transparent and yellow variety of quartz: Its birth flower is the chrysanthemum sometimes abbreviated to "mums" or "chrysanths". The zodiac signs are Scorpio (until November 22) and Sagittarius (from then on). https://store.earthstation1.com/the-historical-view-a-legacy-in-pictures-jpg-photo-cd.html

November 1, 1871: #BOTD: #HBD! Stephen Crane, American poet, novelist, and short story writer (d. June 5, 1900) is #born in Newark, New Jersey, to Jonathan Townley Crane, a minister in the Methodist Episcopal church, and Mary Helen Peck Crane, daughter of a clergyman, George Peck. Prolific throughout his short life, he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. The ninth surviving child of Methodist parents, Crane began writing at the age of four and had published several articles by the age of 16. Having little interest in university studies though he was active in a fraternity, he left Syracuse University in 1891 to work as a reporter and writer. Crane's first novel was the 1893 Bowery tale Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, generally considered by critics to be the first work of American literary Naturalism. He won international acclaim in 1895 for his Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage, which he wrote without having any battle experience. In 1896, Crane endured a highly publicized scandal after appearing as a witness in the trial of a suspected prostitute, an acquaintance named Dora Clark. Late that year he accepted an offer to travel to Cuba as a war correspondent. As he waited in Jacksonville, Florida for passage, he met Cora Taylor, with whom he began a lasting relationship. En route to Cuba, Crane's vessel the SS Commodore sank off the coast of Florida, leaving him and others adrift for 30 hours in a dinghy. Crane described the ordeal in "The Open Boat". During the final years of his life, he covered conflicts in Greece (accompanied by Cora, recognized as the first woman war correspondent) and later lived in England with her. He was befriended by writers such as Joseph Conrad and H. G. Wells. Plagued by financial difficulties and ill health, Crane died of tuberculosis in a Black Forest sanatorium in Germany at the age of 28 after being plagued for some time by financial difficulties and ill health. He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, New Jersey. At the time of his death, Crane was considered an important figure in American literature. After he was nearly forgotten for two decades, critics revived interest in his life and work. Crane's writing is characterized by vivid intensity, distinctive dialects, and irony. Common themes involve fear, spiritual crises and social isolation. Although recognized primarily for The Red Badge of Courage, which has become an American classic, Crane is also known for his poetry, journalism, and short stories such as "The Open Boat", "The Blue Hotel", "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky", and 'The Monster'. His writing made a deep impression on 20th-century writers, most prominent among them Ernest Hemingway, and is thought to have inspired the Modernists and the Imagists. https://store.earthstation1.com/nbc-university-theater-of-the-air-otr-mp3-dv3.html

November 1, 1918: The European Civil War: World War I: The First European War (The European Theater Of World War I): The Western Front Of World War I: Naval Warfare Of World War I: The Naval Order Of 24 October 1918: The Wilhelmshaven Mutiny: The Kiel Mutiny: -- Some 250 sailors and stokers of the German Third Navy Squadron meet in the evening at the Union House in Kiel, seeking to prevent the German High Seas Fleet from setting sail to fight the Royal Navy, and to organize the release of their comrades who had been arrested in the aftermath of the Wilhelmshaven Mutiny. Delegations were sent to their commanding officers requesting the mutineers' release, but they were not heard. The sailors then sought to obtain the support of the unions, the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD) and the Social Democrats (SPD). In response, the police closed to Union House, which led to an even larger joint open-air meeting the following day, November 2, at the large drill ground (Grosser Exerzierplatz). On the night of the October 29-30, 1918, the German High Seas Fleet was incapacitated when some crews refused to obey orders and sailors on board three ships from the Third Navy Squadron refused to weigh anchor, an action which would trigger The German Revolution Of 1918-1919 and speed the end of the First World War. Part of the crew on SMS Thuringen and SMS Helgoland, two battleships from the First Navy Squadron, committed outright mutiny and sabotage. However, when a day later some torpedo boats pointed their cannons at these ships, the mutineers gave up and were led away without any resistance. Nevertheless, the naval command had to drop its action plans as it was felt that the crew's loyalty could no longer be relied upon. The Third Navy Squadron was ordered back to Kiel. The squadron commander, Vizeadmiral Hugo Kraft, exercised a maneuver with his battleships in the Heligoland Bight. When it "functioned perfectly (tadellos funktionierte)" he believed he was master of his crews again. While moving through the Kiel Canal he had 47 sailors from the Markgraf, who were seen as the ringleaders, imprisoned. In Holtenau (end of the canal in Kiel) they were brought to the Arrestanstalt (the military prison in Kiel) and to Fort Herwarth in the north of Kiel. The German Revolution or November Revolution (German: Novemberrevolution) was a civil conflict in the German Empire at the end of the First World War that resulted in the replacement of the German federal constitutional monarchy with a democratic parliamentary republic that later became known as the Weimar Republic. The revolutionary period lasted from November 1918 until the adoption in August 1919 of the Weimar Constitution. The causes of the revolution were the extreme burdens suffered by the population during the four years of war, the strong impact of the defeat on the German Empire and the social tensions between the general population and the elite of aristocrats and bourgeoisie who held power and had just lost the war. The first acts of revolution were triggered by the policies of the German Supreme Command of the Army and its lack of coordination with the Naval Command. In the face of defeat, the Naval Command insisted on trying to precipitate a climactic battle with the British Royal Navy by means of its naval order of October 24, 1918. The battle never took place; instead of obeying their orders to begin preparations to fight the British, German sailors led a revolt in the naval ports of Wilhelmshaven on October 29, 1918, followed by the Kiel Mutiny in the first days of November. These disturbances spread the spirit of civil unrest across Germany, and ultimately led to the proclamation of a republic on November 9 1918. Shortly thereafter, Emperor Wilhelm II abdicated his throne and fled the country. https://store.earthstation1.com/world-war-i-the-war-files-dvd-2-part-documentary-serie2.html

Today, November 1, 2025
November 1, 1758 (Traditional; Birthdate Unknown, c. 1736 - c. 1761): #BOTD: #HBD! Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha The Great, conqueror and first ruler of The Kingdom Of Hawaii (d. May 8 or 14, 1819) is #born Pai'ea (Hawaiian, "Hard-Shelled Crab") in Kapakai, Kokoiki, Moiokini Heiau (no Kohala Historical Sites State Monument, a National Historic Landmark) in remote North Kohala, Hawaii Island. Accounts of his birth vary, but sources place his birth between 1736 and 1761, with historian Ralph Simpson Kuykendall believing it to be between 1748 and 1761. A great warrior, diplomat and leader, King Kamehameha I united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom in 1810 after years of conflict. Hawaiian legend prophesized that a light in the sky with feathers like a bird would signal the birth of a great chief. In 1758, Halley's comet passed over Hawaii, a year several accounts place his birth. The future king was hidden from warring clans in secluded Waipi'o Valley after birth. After the death threat passed, Pai'ea came out of hiding and was renamed Kamehameha (Hawaiian, "The Lonely One"). Kamehameha was trained as a warrior and his renowned strength gave rise to account that he overturned the Naha Stone, a large volcanic rock located in Hilo, Hawaii estimated to weigh between 2.5 and 3.5 tons, a symbol of the Naha rank of Hawaiian royalty and used to prove the legitimacy of the bloodline of any claiming to be of Naha rank. You can still see the Naha Stone today in Hilo. During this time, warfare between chiefs throughout the islands was widespread. In 1778, Captain James Cook arrived in Hawaii, who named the islands The Sandwich Islands. Cooks arrival dovetailed with Kamehameha's ambitions. With the help of western weapons and advisors, Kamehameha won fierce battles at lao Valley in Maui and the Nu'uanu Pali on Oahu. The fortress-like Pu'ukohola Heiau on the island of Hawaii was built in 1790 prophesizing Kamehameha's conquest of the islands. In 1810, when King Kaumuali'i of Kaua?i agreed to become a tributary kingdom under Kamehameha, that prophecy was finally fulfilled. Kamehameha died on May 8 or 14, 1819, aged between 57 and 83 at Kamakahonu, his residence located at the north end of Kailua Bay in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island. In the tradition of ancient custom called hunakele (literally, "to hide in secret"), his body was hidden by his trusted friends, Hoapili and Ho'olulu; the mana, or power of a person, was considered to be sacred, so his body being buried in a hidden location protected his mana. As a result, Kamehameha's final resting place remains unknown. At one point in his reign, Kamehameha III asked that Hoapili show him where his father's bones were buried, but on the way there Hoapili knew that they were being followed, so he turned around. Kamehameha's unification of Hawaii was significant not only because it was an incredible feat, but also because under separate rule, the Islands may have been torn apart by competing western interests. Today, four commissioned statues stand to honor King Kamehameha's memory. Every June 11th, on Kamehameha Day, each of these statues are ceremoniously draped with flower lei to celebrate Hawaii's greatest king. The state of Hawaii gave a statue of him to the National Statuary Hall Collection in Washington, D.C., as one of two statues it is entitled to install there. https://store.earthstation1.com/kamehameha-i-king-of-the-hawaiian-islands-mp4-video-download-or-dvd.html

In the engagement, seven battalions of U.S. Marine and Army troops under the overall command of Alexander Vandegrift and tactical command of Merritt A. Edson, following up on the U.S. victory in the Battle for Henderson Field, crossed the Matanikau River and attacked Japanese Army units between the river and Point Cruz, on the northern Guadalcanal coast. The area was defended by the Japanese Army's 4th Infantry Regiment under Nomasu Nakaguma along with various other support troops, under the overall command of Harukichi Hyakutake. November 1, 1956: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Eastern Bloc (The Communist Bloc, The Socialist Bloc, The Soviet Bloc): Cold War Rebellions: Anti-Communist Insurgencies In Central And Eastern Europe: The Hungarian Revolution Of 1956 (The Hungarian Uprising): -- Imre Nagy (pronounced IM-Ra NAJ), Hungarian communist politician, Chairman Of The Council Of Ministers Of The Hungarian People's Republic (de facto Prime Minister), leader of the Hungarian Revolution Of 1956 against the Soviet-backed government for which he was sentenced to death and executed two years later, formally declared Hungary's withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact; Nagy's Cabinet, which included future traitor Janos Kadar who pretended to be in agreement, announces Hungary's neutrality and international status as a politically non-aligned country; and requests assistance from the Budapest diplomatic corps and UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold to defend Hungary's neutrality. Because of being in power for only ten days, the National Government did not explain their policies in detail, an omission which later proved to be problematic; however, contemporary Hungarian newspaper editorials stressed that Hungary should become a multiparty social democracy, and uninvolved in the Russo-American Cold War. About 8,000 Hungarian political prisoners were released, most notably Cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty, and banned political parties, such as the Independent Smallholders and the National Peasant Party ("Petofi Party") reappeared to join the coalition. Meanwhile, Nagy receives reports that, as a result of the Nagy government's actions, Soviet forces were entering Hungary from the east and were moving towards Budapest. Nagy asked the Soviet Ambassador To Hungary (and future leader of the Soviet Union) Yuri Andropov to inform the Soviet government that Hungary would begin negotiations on the removal of Soviet forces immediately, seeking and receiving from Andropov assurances that the Soviet Union would not invade, assurance that were at the time they were given, and later proved to be, utterly false. Meanwhile, Fellow Nagy Cabinet ministers Janos Kadar, future General Secretary Of The Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party, and Ferenc Munnich, future Chairman Of The Council Of Ministers Of The People's Republic Of Hungary, secretly turn traitor and defect to the Soviets, and would go on to play despicable roles in betraying the Hungarian Revolution. The Hungarian Revolution began on October 23, 1956 in Budapest when university students appealed to the civil populace to join them at the Hungarian Parliament Building to protest against the USSR's geopolitical domination of Hungary with the Stalinist government of Matyas Rakosi. A delegation of students entered the building of Hungarian Radio to broadcast their sixteen demands for political and economic reforms to the civil society of Hungary, but they were instead detained by security guards. When the student protestors outside the radio building demanded the release of their delegation of students, policemen from the AVH (Allamvedelmi Hatosag) state protection authority shot and killed several protestors. Consequently, Hungarians organized into revolutionary militias to fight against the AVH; local Hungarian communist leaders and AVH policemen were captured and summarily killed or lynched; and anti-communist political prisoners were released and armed. To realize their political, economic, and social demands, the local soviets (councils of workers) assumed control of municipal government from the Hungarian Working People's Party (Magyar Dolgozok Partja). The new government of Imre Nagy disbanded the AVH, declared the Hungarian withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact, and pledged to re-establish free elections. By the end of October the intense fighting had subsided. Although initially willing to negotiate the withdrawal of the Soviet Army from Hungary, the USSR repressed the Hungarian Revolution on 4 November 1956, and fought the Hungarian revolutionaries until November 10; repression of the Hungarian Uprising killed 2,500 Hungarians and 700 Soviet Army soldiers, and compelled 200,000 Hungarians to seek political refuge abroad. https://store.earthstation1.com/19401960-the-iron-curtain-and-beyond-dv194019604.html

November 1, 1950: Korea: Korea: The History Of Korea: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War In Asia: The Korean Conflict: The Cold War (1947-1953): The Cold War In Asia: The Korean War: The Chinese First Phase Campaign (The Chinese First Phase Offensive): The Battle Of Unsan (The Battle Of Yunshan): -- After inflicting heavy losses on the ROK II Corps at The Battle Of Onjong, the first military engagement between the Chinese and US forces during the Korean War begins when thousands of soldiers from the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (PVA) 39th Army encircles and attacks the US 8th Cavalry Regiment deep in North Korea with three-prong assaults from the north, northwest, and west and overrun their defensive position flanks. This surprise assault resulted in the US and UN forces retreating back to the Ch'ongch'on River, while the PVA unexpectedly disappeared into mountain hideouts following their victory. It is unclear why the Chinese did not press the attack and follow up their victory. On October 25, after the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (PVA) under the command of Peng Dehuai with 270,000 PVA troops had secretly crossed the Yalu River on October 19, the PVA 13th Army Group had launched the First Phase Offensive, attacking the advancing UN forces near the Sino-Korean border. Twelve days after PVA troops entered the war, Stalin decided to order the Soviet Air Force to provide air cover, and provided more aid to China. The PVA assault caught the UN troops by surprise, and employing great skill and remarkable camouflage ability, concealed their numerical and divisional strength after the first engagement with the UN. After these initial engagements, lasting from October 25 to November 5, 1950, the Chinese withdrew into the mountains. UN forces interpreted this withdrawal as a show of weakness; they thought that this initial attack was all that the Chinese forces were capable of undertaking. https://store.earthstation1.com/korea-the-unknown-war-dvd-complete-6-part-tv-series-3-dis63.html

November 1, 1880: #BOTD: #HBD! Alfred Wegener, German meteorologist, geophysicist, climatologist, geologist, and polar researcher, during his lifetime primarily known for his achievements in meteorology and as a pioneer of polar research, but today most remembered as the originator of continental drift hypothesis (d. November 1930) is #born Alfred Lothar Wegener in Berlin, German Empire. By suggesting in 1912 that the continents are slowly drifting around the Earth (German: Kontinentalverschiebung), his hypothesis was so controversial that he and his theory were widely rejected by mainstream geology until the 1950s, when numerous discoveries such as palaeomagnetism provided strong support for continental drift, and thereby a substantial basis for today's model of plate tectonics. Wegener was involved in several expeditions to Greenland to study polar air circulation before the existence of the jet stream was accepted. Expedition participants made many meteorological observations and were the first to overwinter on the inland Greenland ice sheet and the first to bore ice cores on a moving Arctic glacier. Sometime in November 1930: Alfred Wegener died in Greenland while returning from an expedition to bring food to a group of researchers camped in the middle of an icecap. He supplied the camp successfully, but there was not enough food at the camp for him to stay there. He and a colleague, Rasmus Villumsen, took dog sleds to travel to another camp although they never reached it. Villumsen buried the body with great care, and a pair of skis marked the grave site. After burying Wegener, Villumsen had resumed his journey to West camp, but he was never seen again. Six months later, on May 12, 1931, the grave was discovered halfway between Eismitte and West camp. Expedition members built a pyramid-shaped mausoleum in the ice and snow, and Alfred Wegener's body was laid to rest in it. Wegener had been 50 years of age and a heavy smoker, and it was believed that he had died of heart failure brought on by overexertion. Villumsen was 23 when he died, and it is estimated that his body, and Wegener's diary, now lie under more than 100 metres (330 ft) of accumulated ice and snow. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-making-of-a-continent-2-dual-layer-dvd-set-all-6-episod26.html

Today, November 1, 2025
November 1, 2000: #DOTD: #RIP: Steven Runciman, English historian and mystic, best known for "A History Of The Crusades" (1951-54), his three-volume historiography of the Crusades (b. July 7, 1903) #dies in Radway, Warwickshire, England while visiting relatives, aged 97. He never married. Earlier the same year, he had made a final visit to Mount Athos to witness the blessing of the Protaton Tower at Karyes (the capital of the monastic community), which had been refurbished thanks to a gift from him. His burial details are not publicly disclosed. Sir James Cochran Stevenson Runciman CH FBA was born in Northumberland, North East England, the second son of Walter Runciman, 1st Viscount Runciman of Doxford, and Hilda Runciman, Viscountess Runciman of Doxford. Both of his parents were or became members of parliament for the Liberal Party, and were the first married couple to sit simultaneously in Parliament; his father was created Viscount Runciman of Doxford in 1937, his paternal grandfather, Walter Runciman, 1st Baron Runciman, was a shipping magnate, and he was named after his maternal grandfather, James Cochran Stevenson, the MP for South Shields. Sir James Cochran Stevenson Runciman CH FBA, known as Steven Runciman, and his three-volume history has had a profound impact on common conceptions of the Crusades, primarily portraying the Crusaders negatively and the Muslims favourably. Runciman was a strong admirer of the Byzantine Empire, and consequently held a bias against the Crusaders for the Fourth Crusade evident in his work. While praised by older crusade historians as a storyteller and prose stylist, he is viewed as biased by some contemporary historians. It was Runciman who Peter O'Toole portrayed in the film "The Last Emperor" when he was a young history professor from Trinity College of Cambridge University hired to tutor the Chinese Emperor Henry Puyi, ultimately finding himself playing an upright bass to accompany Puyi in a piano rendition of "Baa Baa Black Sheep". Runciman read Latin and Greek by five years of age, and was close friends with George Orwell, with whom he studied French under Aldous Huxley. When not walking and sailing throughout the whole of the medieval Greek world of the Byzantium empire, or reading or writing in a dozen or so languages, or teaching the teachers of Turkey the history of their own country by order of the Attaturk, he was reading tarot cards for the King Of Egypt, getting ancient streets named after him in Sparta, being made into an honorary Whirling Dervish after Sir Runciman helped ensure its heredity chief would be permitted to assume his leadership title, and hitting, not once but twice, the jackpot on Las Vegas slot machines. He achieved all this and much else, the crowning achievement being his magnum opus, "The Great Crusades" trilogy of books, yet uppermost among his triumphs was his maintaining to his core the same bookish intellectual student still full of innocent wonder for the world right up to the ripest of old ages of 97 years old. As he wrote in "The Great Church in Captivity", "Human behavior defies scientific laws. Human nature has not yet been tidily analyzed. Human beliefs disregard logic and reason. The historian must attempt to add to his objective study the qualities of intuitive sympathy and imaginative perception, without which he cannot hope to comprehend the feelings and aspirations and convictions that have moved past generations. These qualities are, maybe, gifts of the Spirit; gifts which can be experienced and felt, but not explained in human terms." https://store.earthstation1.com/sir-steven-runciman-bridge-to-the-east-dvd-tv-documentary.html

November 1, 1870: Weather: Weather Forecasting: The History Of Weather Forecasting: Weather Forecasting In The United States: The Weather Bureau (The United States Weather Bureau, later renamed The National Weather Service [NWS]): -- The first official meteorological forecast by the United States government occurs at 7:35a.m. as the Weather Bureau, the future National Weather Service, issues its first systematized and synchronous meteorological reports, taken by observer-sergeants at 24 stations in the new agency. These observations, which were transmitted by telegraph to the central office in Washington, D.C., commenced the beginning of the new division of the Signal Service. A Weather Observing Station in Key West was among the original stations. Observations were taken at the Russell House on the west side of Duval Street, between Front and Green Streets. On February 9, 1870, the U.S. National Weather Service begins in the Department of the Army. President Ulysses Grant signs a joint resolution of Congress authorizing the Secretary of War to establish a weather service within the Army. Weather observations are made at 24 locations by the Army signal corps and the word "forecast" becomes established. This resolution required the Secretary of War "to provide for taking meteorological observations at the military stations in the interior of the continent and at other points in the States and Territories and for giving notice on the northern (Great) Lakes and on the seacoast by magnetic telegraph and marine signals, of the approach and force of storms. Today, November 1, 2025
November 1, 1790: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The French Revolution: -- Edmund Burke, Irish Political Theorist and member of the British House Of Commons, publishes the political pamphet "Reflections On The Revolution In France", in which he correctly predicts that the French Revolution will end in a disaster. One of the best-known intellectual attacks against the French Revolution, Reflections is a defining tract of modern conservatism as well as an important contribution to international theory. Above all else, it has been one of the defining efforts of Edmund Burke's transformation of "traditionalism into a self-conscious and fully conceived political philosophy of conservatism". In Reflections, Burke asserted that the revolution was destroying the fabric of good society and traditional institutions of state and society and condemned the persecution of the Catholic Church that resulted from it. This led to his becoming the leading figure within the conservative faction of the Whig Party which he dubbed the Old Whigs, as opposed to the pro-French Revolution New Whigs led by Charles James Fox. The pamphlet has not been easy to classify. Before seeing this work as a pamphlet, Burke wrote in the mode of a letter, invoking expectations of openness and selectivity that added a layer of meaning. Academics have had trouble identifying whether Burke, or his tract, can best be understood as "a realist or an idealist, Rationalist or a Revolutionist". Thanks to its thoroughness, rhetorical skill and literary power, it has become one of the most widely known of Burke's writings and a classic text in political theory. In the 20th century, it influenced a number of conservative intellectuals, who recast Burke's Whiggish arguments as a critique of Bolshevik programmes. Edmund Burke (January 12, 1729 - July 9, 1797) was an Irish statesman and philosopher. Born in Dublin, Burke served as a member of parliament (MP) between 1766 and 1794 in the House Of Commons of Great Britain with the Whig Party after moving to London in 1750. Burke was a proponent of underpinning virtues with manners in society and of the importance of religious institutions for the moral stability and good of the state. These views were expressed in his A Vindication of Natural Society. He criticised the actions of the British government towards the American colonies, including its taxation policies. Burke also supported the rights of the colonists to resist metropolitan authority, although he opposed the attempt to achieve independence. He is remembered for his support for Catholic emancipation, the impeachment of Warren Hastings from the East India Company, and his staunch opposition to the French Revolution. In the 19th century, Burke was praised by both conservatives and liberals. Subsequently in the 20th century, he became widely regarded as the philosophical founder of modern conservatism. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-french-revolution-dvd-3-part-tv-documentary-serie3.html

November 1, 1972: #DOTD: #RIP: Ezra Pound, American expatriate poet and critic, a major figure in the early modernist movement whose contribution to poetry began with his development of Imagism, a movement derived from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision and economy of language (b. October 30, 1885, Mischief Night) #dies in his sleep on All Saint's Day of "sudden blockage of the intestine" at the San Giovanni e Paolo Civil Hospital in Venice, Italy two days after his 87th birthday. He is buried at San Michele Cemetery (Italian: Il Cimitero Di San Michele), Venice's principal cemetery since its creation in 1807. Ezra Pound was born Ezra Weston Loomis Pound in a two-story clapboard house in Hailey, Idaho Territory. Pound was an expatriate major figure in the early modernist movement. His contribution to poetry began with his development of Imagism, a movement derived from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision and economy of language. His works include Ripostes (1912), Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (1920) and the unfinished 120-section epic, The Cantos (1917-1969). Pound worked in London during the early 20th century as foreign editor of several American literary magazines, and helped discover and shape the work of contemporaries such as T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Robert Frost and Ernest Hemingway. Angered by the carnage of World War I, Pound lost faith in England and blamed the war on usury and international capitalism. He moved to Italy in 1924, and throughout the 1930s and 1940s he embraced Benito Mussolini's fascism, expressed support for Adolf Hitler, and wrote for publications owned by the British fascist Oswald Mosley. During World War II, he was paid by the Italian government to make hundreds of radio broadcasts criticizing the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Jews, as a result of which he was arrested in 1945 by American forces in Italy on charges of treason. He spent months in detention in a U.S. military camp in Pisa, including three weeks in a 6-by-6-foot (1.8 by 1.8 m) outdoor steel cage, which he said triggered a mental breakdown: "when the raft broke and the waters went over me". Deemed unfit to stand trial, he was incarcerated in St. Elizabeths psychiatric hospital in Washington, D.C., for over 12 years. While in custody in Italy, Pound begun to work on sections of The Cantos. These were published as The Pisan Cantos (1948), for which he was awarded the Bollingen Prize in 1949 by the Library of Congress, triggering enormous controversy. Largely due to a campaign by his fellow writers, he was released from St. Elizabeths in 1958 and returned to live in Italy until his death. His political views ensure that his work remains as controversial now as it was during his lifetime; in 1933 Time magazine called him "a cat that walks by himself, tenaciously unhousebroken and very unsafe for children." Hemingway wrote: "The best of Pound's writing: and it is in the Cantos: will last as long as there is any literature." https://store.earthstation1.com/ezra-pound-in-peace-and-war-dvd.html

In support of the landings, U.S. aircraft carrier forces attack the huge Japanese base at Rabaul, and these land and sea operations leading that night to a great naval clash at The Battle Of Empress Augusta Bay (November 1-2, 1943), also known as the Battle Of Gazelle Bay, Operation Cherry Blossom, and in Japanese sources as the Sea Battle Off Bougainville Island (Japanese: Bugenbiru Tookikaisen). was significant as part of a broader Allied strategy known as Operation Cartwheel, aimed at isolating and surrounding the major Japanese base at Rabaul. The naval battle took place at the end of the first day of the landings around Cape Torokina, as the Japanese sortied a large force from Rabaul in an effort to replicate the success they had achieved at Savo Island in August 1942, in response to Allied amphibious landings in the eastern Solomon Islands. Ultimately, the covering force of US warships was able to turn back the Japanese force and the landings around Cape Torokina were successful. https://store.earthstation1.com/wwii-films-the-asiapacific-conflict-dvd.html

November 1, 1604: Aesthetics: Performing Arts: Premieres: Theatre Premieres: British Theatre Premieres: -- William Shakespeare's tragedy Othello is performed for the first time, at Whitehall Palace in London. As Othello possesses an unusually detailed performance record, this first performance is known for certainty as it is mentioned in a Revels account on "Hallamas Day, being the first of Nouembar", 1604, when "the Kings Maiesties plaiers" performed "A Play in the Banketinge house at Whit Hall Called The Moor of Venis". The play is there attributed to "Shaxberd". Subsequent performances took place on Monday, April 30, 1610 at the Globe Theatre, and at Oxford in September 1610. On November 22, 1629, and on May 6, 1635, it played at the Blackfriars Theatre. Othello was also one of the twenty plays performed by the King's Men during the winter of 1612, in celebration of the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Frederick V, Elector Palatine. Othello (The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice) is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1603. It is based on the story Un Capitano Moro ("A Moorish Captain") by Cinthio (a disciple of Boccaccio's), first published in 1565. The story revolves around its two central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army, and his treacherous ensign, Iago. Given its varied and enduring themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge, and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike, and has been the source for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations. https://store.earthstation1.com/with-orson-welles-stories-from-a-life-in-film-dvd.html

November 1, 1611: Aesthetics: Performing Arts: Premieres: Theatre Premieres: British Theatre Premieres: -- Shakespeare's play The Tempest is performed for the first time, at Whitehall Palace in London. The Tempest was probably written in the period of a year leading up to this premiere, and it is thought to be one of the last plays that Shakespeare wrote alone. After the first scene, which takes place on a ship at sea during a tempest, the rest of the story is set on a remote island, where the sorcerer Prospero, a complex and contradictory character, lives with his daughter Miranda, and his two servants: Caliban, a savage monster figure, and Ariel, an airy spirit. The play contains music and songs that evoke the spirit of enchantment on the island. It explores many themes, including magic, betrayal, revenge, and family. In Act IV, a wedding masque serves as a play-within-a-play, and contributes spectacle, allegory, and elevated language. Although The Tempest is listed in the First Folio as the first of Shakespeare's comedies, it deals with both tragic and comic themes, and modern criticism has created a category of romance for this and others of Shakespeare's late plays. The Tempest has been put to varied interpretations, from those that see it as a fable of art and creation, with Prospero representing Shakespeare, and Prospero's renunciation of magic signaling Shakespeare's farewell to the stage, to interpretations that consider it an allegory of Europeans colonizing foreign lands. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-shakespeare-mystery-dvd-edward-de-vere-oxfordian-theory.html

Valentinian sent his Roman General Dagalaifus of Germanic descent to fight the Alamanni while he himself made preparations to march east and help Valens. However, after receiving counsel from his court and deputations from the leading Gallic cities begging him to stay and protect Gaul, he decided to remain in Gaul and fight the Alamanni. Valentinian advanced to Durocortorum, the name of the city Reims during the Roman era, and sent two generals, Charietto and Severianus, against the invaders. Both generals were promptly defeated and killed. In 366, Dagalaifus was sent against the Alamanni but he was also ineffective. Late in the campaigning season Dagalaifus was replaced by Jovinus, a general from the court of Valentinian. After several victories along the Meuse river, Jovinus fought and won a pitched battle with the Alamanni near Chalon. After his victory he pushed the Alamanni out of Gaul and was awarded the consulate the following year for his efforts. Today, November 1, 2025
November 1, 1904: #BOTD: #HBD! Laura La Plante, aka Anabelle West in The Cat and the Canary, American actress and beauty, primarily known for her work in the silent film era (d. October 14, 1996) is #born Laura Laplante in St. Louis, Missouri. Her best remembered film is arguably the silent classic The Cat and the Canary (1927), although she also achieved acclaim for Skinner's Dress Suit (1926), with Reginald Denny, the part-talkie The Love Trap (1929), directed by William Wyler, and the 1929 part-talkie film version of Show Boat (1929), adapted from the novel of the same name by Edna Ferber. The Cat and the Canary is a silent horror film adaptation of John Willard's 1922 black comedy play of the same name. The film stars Laura La Plante as Annabelle West, Forrest Stanley as Charles "Charlie" Wilder, and Creighton Hale as Paul Jones. The plot revolves around the death of Cyrus West, who is Annabelle, Charlie, and Paul's uncle, and the reading of his will 20 years later. Annabelle inherits her uncle's fortune, but when she and her family spend the night in his haunted mansion they are stalked by a mysterious figure. Meanwhile, a lunatic known as "the Cat" escapes from an asylum and hides in the mansion. The film is part of a genre of comedy horror films inspired by 1920s Broadway stage plays. Paul Leni's adaptation of Willard's play blended expressionism with humor, a style Leni was notable for and critics recognized as unique. Leni's style of directing made The Cat and the Canary influential in the "old dark house" genre of films popular from the 1930s through the 1950s. The film was one of Universal's early horror productions and is considered "the cornerstone of Universal's school of horror." Laura La Plante died of Alzheimer's disease at the age of 91 in Woodland Hills, California. Despite contrary belief about her rumored interment at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego, California, La Plante was actually cremated by Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, California, and her ashes scattered at sea. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-cat-and-the-canary-1927-dvd-paul-leni-laura-la-pl1927.html
