October 3, 1789: Thanksgiving (United
States) -- Following on a joint request by Congress, George
Washington designates Thursday the 26th day of November 1789 as
the first Thanksgiving Day designated by the national government
of the US. When Washington was leader of the revolutionary forces
in the American Revolutionary War, he proclaimed a Thanksgiving in
December 1777 as a victory celebration honoring the defeat of the
British at Saratoga. On Friday, September 25, 1280, Congressman
Elias Boudinot from New Jersey proposed that the House and Senate
jointly request of President Washington to proclaim a day of
thanksgiving for "the many signal favors of Almighty God".
Boudinot said that he "could not think of letting the session
pass over without offering an opportunity to all the citizens of
the United States of joining, with one voice, in returning to
Almighty God their sincere thanks for the many blessings he had
poured down upon them." As President, on October 3, 1789,
George Washington made the following proclamation and created the
first Thanksgiving Day designated by the national government of
the United States of America: " Whereas it is the duty of all
Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his
will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his
protection and favor, and whereas both Houses of Congress have by
their joint Committee requested me 'to recommend to the People of
the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be
observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal
favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity
peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and
happiness.' Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the
26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these
States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the
beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will
be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere
and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People
of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the
signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of
his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion
of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and
plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and
rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish
constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and
particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil
and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we
have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general
for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to
confer upon us. And also that we may then unite in most humbly
offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler
of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other
transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private
stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and
punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all
the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and
constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and
obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations
(especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them
with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge
and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of
science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind
such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of
October in the year of our Lord 1789." On Sale @ 15% Off

October 3, 1863: Thanksgiving (United
States) -- President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation
designating the last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day. In
the middle of the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln,
prompted by a series of editorials written by Sarah Josepha Hale,
proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated on the
26th, the final Thursday of November 1863. The document, written
by Secretary Of State William H. Seward, reads as follows: "The
year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the
blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these
bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to
forget the source from which they come, others have been added,
which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to
penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible
to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a
civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has
sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their
aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has
been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and
harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military
conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the
advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of
wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the
national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or
the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and
the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals,
have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has
steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made
in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country,
rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is
permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of
freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand
worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the
Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins,
hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and
proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully
acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American
people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of
the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are
sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last
Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to
our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend
to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him
for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with
humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience,
commend to his tender care all those who have become widows,
orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in
which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the
interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the
nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the
Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony,
tranquility and Union. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set
my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.
Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and
of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth."
Since 1863, Thanksgiving has been observed annually in the United
States. The holiday superseded Evacuation Day, a de facto national
holiday that had been held on November 25 each year prior to the
Civil War and commemorated the British withdrawal from the United
States after the American Revolution. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

October 3: The 3 October Festival (Dutch:
3 Oktoberfeest, 3 Oktober, Leidens Ontzet): -- October 3, 1574:
The European Wars Of Religion: The Eighty Years' War (The Dutch
Revolt): The Anglo-Spanish Wars: The Anglo-Spanish War
(1585-1604): The Siege Of Leiden (October X, 1573 - October 3,
1574: The Second Siege And Relief Of Leiden: --- The Spanish under
Francisco de Valdez who attempted to capture the rebellious city
of Leiden, South Holland, the Netherlands fails when their siege
of the city is successfully relieved. The 3 October Festival
celebrates this lifting of the siege, which is held annually
during the days leading up to the 3rd and often concludes that
evening or the following day. It has been a local tradition since
1886. It is a festival with a funfair and a dozen open air discos
in the night. The municipality gives free herring and white bread
to the citizens of Leiden. The city of Leiden had plenty of food
stored for The First Siege Of Leiden when it started. The siege
was very difficult for the Spanish, because the soil was too loose
to dig trenches, and the city's defense works were hard to break.
Defending Leiden was a Dutch States rebel army consisting of
English, Scottish, and Huguenot French troops. The leader of the
Dutch rebels, William the Silent, Prince of Orange, attempted a
relief of Leiden by sending an army into the Netherlands under the
command of his brother, Louis of Nassau. Valdez lifted the siege
in April 1574 to face the invading rebel troops, but Sancho
d'Avila reached them first and defeated them in the Battle of
Mookerheyde, where Louis was killed. During the brief respite from
the siege, Orange counselled the citizens of Leiden to restock
their city with supplies, and take in a larger garrison to help
defend the town. They disregarded his advice, however, so when
Valdez' army returned to renew the siege on May 26, 1574, they
were in as poor a condition as they had previously been. The city
considered surrendering, as there was almost no chance of relief
and supplies were dwindling. The defeat of Louis' army was also a
blow to morale. The Prince of Orange, however, was determined to
relieve the city. Therefore, he sent a carrier pigeon into the
city pleading for it to hold out for three months. To fulfil this
promise, he planned to breach the dykes to allow the sea to flood
the low-lying land. The siege could then be lifted using the rebel
fleet, and the Spaniards would be forced to retire before the
incoming sea. This tactic had also been used to relieve Alkmaar.
The damage to the surrounding countryside would be enormous, and
therefore the population of the area resisted the breaching of the
dykes. However, in the end, the Prince prevailed and the outer
dykes were broken on 3 August. Previously, the Prince's Admiral
Louis Boisot had assembled a fleet of more than two hundred small
flat-bottomed vessels, manned by 2,500 veteran Dutch seamen, and
carrying a large store of provisions for the starving townspeople
of Leiden. Soon after the first dykes were broken, the Prince of
Orange came down with a violent fever which brought operations to
a halt. More importantly, the flooding of the countryside took
longer than expected because of unfavorable winds. On 21 August,
the inhabitants of Leiden sent a message to the Prince saying that
they had held out for three months, two with food and one without
food. The Prince answered them, again by carrier pigeon, that the
dykes had all been pierced and relief would come soon. However,
only by the first day of September, when the Prince had recovered
from his ailment, did the expedition continue in earnest. More
than 15 miles lay between the relieving rebel fleet and Leiden,
but ten miles were covered without difficulty. On the night of 10
September, the fleet came upon the Landscheiding, which blocked
their path to Leiden, and captured it in a night-time surprise
attack. The Spaniards had neglected to strongly fortify this
important point. The next morning, the Spaniards tried to regain
the position but were repulsed with the loss of several hundred
men. The dyke was breached and the fleet proceeded towards Leiden.
Admiral Boisot and the Prince of Orange had been misinformed as to
the lie of the lands, and had assumed that the rupture of the
Landscheiding would flood the country inland all the way to
Leiden. Instead, the rebel flotilla once again found their path
blocked, this time by the Greenway dike, less than a mile inland
of the Landscheiding, which was still a foot above the water
level. Again however the Spaniards had left the dike largely
undefended, and the Dutch broke through it without much
difficulty. Due to easterly winds driving the water back seawards,
and the ever growing surface area of the land that the water
covered, the flooding was by this time so shallow that the fleet
was all but stranded. The only way that was deep enough for them
to proceed was by a canal, leading to a large inland lake called
the Zoetermeer (freshwater lake). This canal, and the bridge over
it, were strongly defended by the Spaniards, and after a brief
amphibious struggle, the Admiral gave up the venture. He
dispatched a despondent message to the Prince, saying that unless
the wind turned, and they could sail around the canal, they were
lost. Meanwhile, in the city, the inhabitants clamoured for
surrender when they saw that their countrymen had run aground. But
Mayor van der Werff inspired his citizens to hold on, telling them
they would have to kill him before the city could surrender, and
that they could eat his arm if they were really that desperate. In
fact thousands of inhabitants died of starvation. To add to their
troubles, as so often happened in that age, the plague appeared in
the city streets and near eight thousand died from that cause
alone. The city only held out because they knew that the Spanish
soldiers would massacre the whole population in any case, to set
an example to the rest of the country, as had happened in Naarden
and the other cities that had been sacked. Admiral Boisot sent a
dove into the town, assuring them of speedy succour. On the 18th
the wind shifted again, and blowing strongly from the west, piled
the sea against the dams. With the rising water level, the
flotilla was soon able to make a circuit around the bridge and
canal, and successfully enter the Zoetermeer. In October, the
Dutch patriots led by William the Silent destroyed the dykes in
four locations in order to form an obstacle the Spanish troops
could not overcome. As a result of this and the coming of a strong
wind from the West, the water rose and Spanish troops lost their
mobility. On one of these four locations, a monument has been
established in remembrance of what happened called the Groenedijk
Monument. The Sea Beggars under Admiral Louis de Boisot had ships
to successfully use the water to their advantage. A succession of
fortified villages now stood in the way of the patriot fleet, and
the Dutch Admiral was afraid even now of losing his prize, but the
Spaniards, panicked by the rising waters, barely offered any
resistance. Every one of their strongholds, now become islands,
were deserted by the Royalist troops in their flight, except for
the village of Lammen. This was a small fort under the command of
Colonel Borgia, and situated about three-quarters of a mile from
the walls of Leiden. This was a formidable obstacle, but the
Spaniards, adept at land fighting and not amphibious warfare, had
despaired of maintaining so unequal a contest against the combined
forces of the sea and the veteran Dutch seamen. Accordingly, the
Spanish commander Valdez ordered a retreat in the night of 2
October, and the army fled, rendered more fearful by a terrible
crash they heard from the city, and assumed to be the men of
Leiden breaking still another dam upon them. In fact, part of the
wall of Leiden, eroded by the sea water, had fallen, leaving the
city completely vulnerable to attack, had any chosen to remain.
The next day, the relieving rebels arrived at the city, feeding
the citizens with herring and white bread. The people also feasted
on hutspot (carrot and onion stew) in the evening. According to
legend, a little orphan boy named Cornelis Joppenszoon found a
cooking pot full with hutspot that the Spaniards had had to leave
behind when they left their camp, the Lammenschans, in a hurry to
escape from the rising waters. In 1575, the Spanish treasury ran
dry, so that the Spanish army could not be paid anymore and it
mutinied. After the pillaging of Antwerp, the whole of the
Netherlands rebelled against Spain. Leiden was once again safe.
The Leiden University was founded by William of Orange in
recognition of the city's sacrifice in the siege. According to the
ironical fiction still maintained by the Prince, that he was
acting on behalf of his master Philip of Spain, against whom he
was in fact in open rebellion, the university was endowed in the
King's name. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

October 3: National Unity Day (German
Unity Day): -- Commemorates the unification of the Federal
Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic into a
single federal Germany on the same date in 1990. A public holiday,
the day is characterized by concerts, communal meals, speeches by
politicians, and fireworks. After WWII, Germany was divided into
four military sectors, each controlled by France, the United
States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union. In 1949, the
Federal Republic of Germany was formed and, on October 7 of the
same year, the German Democratic Republic (also known as the DDR -
'Deutsche Demokratische Republik') was formed. The political
tensions in post-war Europe did not allow much interaction between
the people of the two countries. The DDR exercised strong
resistance against repression of its political opponents.
Thousands of people were kept under surveillance by the German
police. On September 4, 1989, a peaceful protest was carried out
by the people of Leipzig against the DDR government. More such
demonstrations in other DDR cities took place calling for
political reforms and the opening of the borders. And on November
9 that year, the checkpoints between the two German countries were
opened and people could travel freely once more. This date marked
the 'fall' of the Berlin Wall. Democratic elections further paved
the way for the people to come together in the DDR. Finally, in
August 1990, the leaders of both countries signed the Treaty of
Unification, and Germany's unification was made official on
October 3, 1990. The Berlin Wall and the Brandenburg Gate are two
very important symbols of Germany's division and the unification
of Germany in 1990. Images of both of these are put on display on
German Unity Day all across Germany. The day is celebrated as a
three-day festival around the Brandenburg Gate and at the
Reichstag around Platz der Republik. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

October 3, 1226: #DOTD: #RIP: Francis Of
Assisi, venerated as Saint Francis Of Assisi, also known in his
ministry as Francesco, Italian Catholic friar, deacon,
philosopher, mystic, and preacher (b. 1181 or 1182) #dies by
choice aged 24 or 25 in the humble hut the Franciscan Movement
begain in, next to the Porziuncola, a small Catholic church now
located inside the grand Papal Basilica of Saint Mary of the
Angels in Assisi, during the evening hours while listening to a
reading he had requested of Psalm 142 (Psalm 141 in different
numbering systems, "Voce Mea Ad Dominum" (Latin: "To
The Lord"), which he sang along with: ========= "I cry
aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy. I
pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble.
When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who watch over my
way. In the path where I walk people have hidden a snare for me."
========= The Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, which enshrines
the remains of the Saint, stands upon a hill that in the early
1200s was commonly known as the "Colle dell'Inferno"
[Hill of Hell]. This was probably because it was a place where
death sentences were carried out. It also functioned as a kind of
city dump. Francis died in the Portiuncula church in the evening
of October 3, 1226. His body was immediately brought within the
walls of the City of Assisi and was buried in the Chapel of San
Giorgio, which later became part of the Basilica of St. Clare and
is known today as the Chapel of the Crucifix. During the spring of
1227, the Colle dell'Inferno was donated to Pope Gregory IX. The
pope ordered a basilica to be built there to house the body of St.
Francis. Work began in the summer of 1227 and by the end of May,
1230 Francis' body was solemnly transferred to the new basilica
and placed below the main altar. The pope proclaimed the new
Basilica as the "Caput et Mater" [Head and Mother] of
the entire Order of Friars Minor. The architectural planning was
entrusted to Brother Elias of Cortona, a companion of St. Francis
and the Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor. Brother
Elias ordered the construction of a lower basilica, intended as a
crypt, and an upper basilica, in Gothic style, for large
celebrations. The upper basilica was erected immediately after the
lower basilica. Great artists were called to fresco the walls of
this complex, such as Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, and Pietro
Lorenzetti. They painted stories from the life of Christ and
characters from the Old Testament as well as images of St. Francis
and other saints. On the vaults above the main altar of the lower
basilica, painted by Giotto, we find the Glory of St. Francis
depicted along with allegories of the religious vows of poverty,
chastity and obedience. The side walls of the upper basilica
feature twenty-eight large frescoes showing scenes from the life
of St. Francis. These are attributed to Giotto and his
collaborators. In the post-Napoleonic era, excavations were made
to determine the exact burial place of St. Francis and conduct a
recognition of his body. Thus, the crypt was built, which was
later reworked in the neo-Romanesque style we see today. Since
then, the millions of pilgrims, tourists and devotees who visit
Assisi every year are given close access to the tomb of the
Seraphic Father St. Francis. His tomb is surrounded by the tombs
of four of his closest friars: Leo, Masseo, Angelo and Rufino.
Also nearby is the tomb of "Friar" Jacopa, the noble
Roman woman and Franciscan tertiary who was very close to Francis.
Pope St. John XXIII, Pope St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and
Pope Francis made several pilgrimages to the tomb of St. Francis,
in particular, to ask for the gift of peace, in communion with men
and women from other Christian communities and from different
faiths. Pope Francis specifically chose October 3, 2020, as the
day to sign Fratelli tutti, his encyclical on fraternity and
social friendship. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, this event took
place on the altar of the crypt, at the foot of the urn that holds
the remains of St. Francis. Francis Of Assisi was #born in Assisi,
Umbria, Italy as Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone. He renounced
his family's wealth, took a vow of poverty and founded the Order
Of Friars Minor, also known as the Franciscan Order. He founded
the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of Saint Clare,
the Third Order of Saint Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land.
Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in
Christianity. Pope Gregory IX canonized Francis on July 16, 1228.
Along with Saint Catherine of Siena, he was designated patron
saint of Italy. He later became associated with patronage of
animals and the natural environment, and it became customary for
churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on or near his feast
day of October 4. In 1219, he went to Egypt in an attempt to
convert the Sultan to put an end to the conflict of the Crusades.
By this point, the Franciscan Order had grown to such an extent
that its primitive organizational structure was no longer
sufficient. He returned to Italy to organize the Order. Once his
community was authorized by the Pope, he withdrew increasingly
from external affairs. Francis is also known for his love of the
Eucharist. In 1223, Francis arranged for the first Christmas live
nativity scene. According to Christian tradition, in 1224 he
received the stigmata during the apparition of Seraphic angels in
a religious ecstasy, which would make him the second person in
Christian tradition after St. Paul (Galatians 6:17) to bear the
wounds of Christ's Passion. #FeastDayOfSaintFrancis #SaintFrancis

the Second Italo-Abyssinian War, this colonial war resulted in the
defeat of Ethiopia, which was annexed and subjected to military
occupation until the defeat of Italy in East Africa in 1941,
during the East African Campaign of The Second World War. Italy

Radio Broadcasting: Premieres: Radio Premieres: American Radio
Premieres: -- WERD, the first black-owned radio station in the
United States, opens in Atlanta, Georgia, broadcasting on 860 AM
(later WXAP in 1969, now since 1978 WAEC). Jesse B. Blayton Sr.,
accountant, bank president, and Atlanta University professor,
purchased WERD in 1949 for 50K USD. He changed the station format
to "black appeal", aimed specifically at the young
African Americans, and hired his son Jesse Jr. as station manager.
Jesse Jr. hired a friend of from Chicago, "Jockey Jack"
Jack Gibson, and by 1951 Jockey Jack became the most popular DJ in
Atlanta. The station was housed in the Prince Hall Masonic Temple
& Tabor Building (Prince Hall Masonic Temple Auburn, or Prince
Hall Masonic Temple for short) at 332-34 Auburn Avenue, Atlanta,
Gerogia, then one of the wealthiest black neighborhoods in the
United States. Located in that same building was the headquarters
of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, formed in 1957,
staffed by Ella Baker and led by Martin Luther King Jr., whose
father and grandfather were Prince Hall Masons (though which
grandfather is, as of 2020, uncertain per J. C. Kaelin). (Martin
Luther King Jr. was named a Freemason "on sight" at
death by Grand Master Benjamin P. Barksdale of the Most Worshipful
Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Georgia; interviews from 1968 indicate
that Grand Master X. L. Neal of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall
Grand Lodge of Georgia had arranged for Dr. King to become a
Freemason upon his return to Atlanta that year; King's
assassination in Memphis on April 4th of 1968 prevented that from
happening). According to Jockey Jack Gibson, King would tap the
ceiling of SCLC office (just below WERD) with a broomstick to
signal he had an announcement to make. Gibson would then lower a
microphone from the studio window to King at the window below.
Blayton sold the station in 1968, and in 1969 its call letters
were changed to WXAP. WDIA, in Memphis, Tennessee, though white
owned, was on the air in 1948 doing black - or Negro as it was
then called - programming, and had Nat D. Williams as part of the
first radio station programmed entirely for African Americans.
Before the development of the radio format called "Top 40"
was born, "Black Appeal Stations" reinvigorated radio.
By playing a specific group of songs aimed specifically at the
niche market of the young African American demographic, "Black
Appeal Stations" helped keep radio alive. Its success is
considered to have influenced other radio stations to employ what
became known as the "Top 40" radio format, in which the
vast majority found their stations to rise from the bottom to top
of ratings in their markets. By employing "Top 40" as a
radio format, stations were also making a decision to target a
niche in the listening audience rather than trying to appeal to
everyone, as they had done since the beginning. Thus, several
different stations could engage in format radio that included
songs that appealed to various niche audiences within a community.
This strategy of marketing radio broadcasting was made clear and
successful through the developments and maturation of early "Black
Appeal Stations". On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

October 3, 1952: The Aftermath Of World
War II: The Cold War: Nuclear Warfare: Nuclear Weapons Testing:
British Nuclear Warfare: British Nuclear Weapons Testing:
Operation Hurricane: -- The United Kingdom successfully tests a 25
kiloton nuclear weapon to become the world's third nuclear power,
after the United States and the Soviet Union. A plutonium
implosion device was detonated in the lagoon in the Monte Bello
Islands in Western Australia. During the Second World War, Britain
commenced a nuclear weapons project, known as Tube Alloys, but the
1943 Quebec Agreement merged it with the American Manhattan
Project. Several key British scientists worked as part of the
British contribution to the Manhattan Project, but after the war
the Americans ended cooperation on nuclear weapons. In January
1947, a cabinet sub-committee decided, in response to an
apprehension of American isolationism and fears of Britain losing
its great power status, to resume British efforts to build nuclear
weapons. The project was called High Explosive Research, and was
directed by Charles Portal, 1st Viscount Portal of Hungerford,
with William Penney in charge of bomb design. Implicit in the
decision to develop atomic bombs was the need to test them. The
preferred site was the Pacific Proving Grounds in the
US-controlled Marshall Islands. As a fallback, sites in Canada and
Australia were considered. The Admiralty suggested that the Monte
Bello Islands might be suitable, so the Prime Minister of the
United Kingdom, Clement Attlee, sent a request to the Prime
Minister of Australia, Robert Menzies. The Australian government
formally agreed to the islands being used as a nuclear test site
in May 1951. In February 1952, Attlee's successor, Winston
Churchill, announced in the House Of Commons that the first
British atomic bomb test would occur in Australia before the end
of the year. A small fleet was assembled for Operation Hurricane
under the command of Rear Admiral A. D. Torlesse; it included the
escort carrier HMS Campania, which served as the flagship, and the
LSTs Narvik, Zeebrugge and Tracker. Leonard Tyte from Aldermaston
was appointed the technical director. The bomb for Operation
Hurricane was assembled (without its radioactive components) at
Foulness, and taken to the frigate HMS Plym for transport to
Australia. On reaching the Monte Bello Islands, the five Royal
Navy ships were joined by eleven Royal Australian Navy ships,
including the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney. To test the effects of
a ship-smuggled atomic bomb on a port (a threat of great concern
to the British at the time), the bomb was exploded inside the hull
of Plym, anchored 350 metres (1,150 ft) off Trimouille Island. The
explosion occurred 2.7 metres (8 ft 10 in) below the water line,
and left a saucer-shaped crater on the seabed 6 metres (20 ft)
deep and 300 metres (980 ft) across. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

October 3: National No Sugar Day: --
Acting as a reminder that refined sugar is simply not good for
people, National No Sugar Day is here to offer people
encouragement to cut back on the amount of added sugars they eat.
It is also an opportunity to offer healthy alternatives to the
average Western diet that has been increasing in sugar content for
many decades. The discovery of sugar and the processes that can be
used to refine and crystallize it date back many hundreds, or even
thousands, of years. However, it took many years for sugar to take
the place in society that it has today. It wasn't until the 15th
century that sugar gradually entered into the marketplace as an
item sought out by urban consumers. Sadly, the history of the
demand for sugar includes gruesome tales of the slave industry and
trade, with two-thirds of the Africans who were kidnapped ending
up on sugar plantations with the worst conditions. And by the
1860s, half of the world's sugar was still produced by people who
were enslaved, and sugar rapidly became the world's most traded
commodity. But, though popular, refined sugar was found to not
only be bad for the many enslaved people who were producing it but
it was soon realized that refined sugar was also hard on the
bodies of those who ate lots of it. At the same time when sugar
was the most traded commodity, the world's first book was written
in Britain on the topic of maintaining a no sugar, low
carbohydrate diet. By the early 20th century, the US government
had gotten involved and, through subsidies, facilitated
overproduction that led to low prices and even more refined sugar
being eaten by Americans - even though it was known by then to be
unhealthy. Now, the modern diet for Americans includes an average
of more than 60 pounds of sugar consumed by an individual every
year, which is 2-3 times the recommended amount for men and women,
and even worse for children. National No Sugar Day was founded in
2022 by the No Sugar Company with the purpose of improving the
lives and health of individuals, families and communities. The day
is celebrated in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation as
well as the American Heart Association, which encourages the
reduction of the use of refined sugar for a healthier heart and
overall lifestyle. Even those who aren't interested in cutting out
sugar from their diets completely can still celebrate National No
Sugar Day by paying attention and cutting back on refined or added
sugars!

October 3: World Temperance Day: -- A day
which encourages people to give up alcohol, as well as a day to
learn about the history of temperance movements around the world.
Fermented beverages and alcoholic drinks date back thousands of
years. The ancient Egyptians and Chinese were some of the first to
consume alcohol. In 2700 B.C. the Babylonians were known to
worship a wine goddess. An alcoholic drink called mead was very
popular in Greece. The Bible also mentions the drinking of wine.
In fact, turning water into wine was the second recorded miracle
performed by Jesus. As you can see alcohol has been a part of
society and culture for thousands of years. However, not everyone
has looked at alcohol in a positive way. Greek literature is full
of warnings about excessive alcohol consumption. During the 19th
century, the temperance movement helped to promote the moderate
use of alcohol. Some people wanted to ban it all together. Those
in the temperance movements believed alcohol to be responsible for
many of society's ills. This era was also known as Prohibition.
Temperance movements were especially popular in English-speaking
countries. They were also common amongst Scandinavians. Most of
these movements were led by the religious leaders of the day. Some
of these temperance organizations were successful as they
persuaded governments around the world to ban the sale of alcohol.
However, this caused other problems as people illegally made their
own. Eventually, the ban on alcohol failed in many countries.
There are some countries, however where alcohol is still banned.
These countries include Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan,
Somalia, Libya, Bangladesh, and some states in India.

October 3: National Techies Day: -- A
celebration to bring to light the many opportunities youngsters
can take advantage of in the technology industry. If the 21st
century can be defined under one banner, then it is the
technological banner. We haven't even reached the quarter-century
mark and already we have gone from bulky and heavy computers to
sleek and light laptops. There are printers that can print 3D
material, some of which have already been used to create
sustainable and environmentally friendly buildings and items. In
the coming years, experts have already predicted that there will
even be job opportunities that currently do not exist. In fact, in
today's climate, for every one high-tech job, four more are
automatically created. To bring attention to the fast-growing
technological industry, National Techies Day was commemorated. The
National Techies Day was created by CNT Networks (Computer
Networking Technology) and techies.com in 1999. The former is a
company specializing in storage networking solutions, while the
latter used to be a job website focussing on connecting aspiring
candidates with the right job postings in the technological
industry. The main purpose of inventing the day was to raise
awareness about the various technological careers youngsters could
choose from. The industry has grown tremendously in the last 100
years, but if we were to go back right to the start of human
civilization, we will truly come to realize how far the human
species has come. 'Technology' comes from the Greek words 'techne'
(meaning 'arts/craft') and 'logos' (meaning 'words'). In the
beginning, the word 'technology' was used to refer to a discourse
on applied arts. It wasn't until recently, namely the 20th
century, that technology was being used to refer to a number of
applied science projects related to concepts and processes. Human
beings started using science and the sources available to them
more than 3 million years ago, albeit with simpler technological
items like knives, clubs, and fire. Gradually, miscellaneous
things like efficient water/sewage systems, cars/trains/ships,
cooking stoves, and the like started becoming more and more
commonplace all around the world. Anthropologists and sociologists
also take into account such technological progress as a way to
measure human civilization. Gerhard Lenski, an American
sociologist, states that a good way to understand societal
advancement is how information travels through it in terms of
technology, and this brings us back to National Techies Day. If we
want our society to go in a positive direction, we must encourage
the young people around us to get into the arena that will not
only bring them closer to success but will also be a way of
bringing the rest of the world up to speed.

October 3: National Wide Awakes Day: --
Celebrates The Wide Awakes, a youth organization and, later,
paramilitary organization fostered by the Republican Party,
specifically the Lincoln campaign, during the United States'
all-important presidential election in 1860. It was an open-source
network of people who believed in the emancipation of all,
abolition, and workers' rights. Despite adversity, false
accusations, and several conspiracies to bring them down, the
group's revolutionary members continued to march on. In early
March 1860, Abraham Lincoln passionately spoke against the spread
of slavery and the importance of workers' rights, including their
right to strike in Hartford, Connecticut. Five store clerks
founded a Republican group called The Wide Awakes and decided to
carry torches along a parade for Lincoln, who was delighted by the
torchlight escort back to his hotel after his speech and helped
popularize the group. Over the coming weeks, the Lincoln campaign
developed Wide Awakes across the country and used them to
spearhead large voter registration drives because they knew that
new and young voters tend to embrace new and young parties. By the
middle of the 1860 campaign, members of the Republican Party
bragged that they had Wide Awake chapters in every county of all
free northern states. By the time Lincoln was elected president,
The Wide Awakes organization had grown to 500,000 members, and the
group had remained active for several decades. On October 3, 1860,
The Wide Awakes, dressed in oilcloth cloaks and bearing lanterns,
marched in massive torchlight parades in the name of emancipation
around the country, including cities like Chicago, Boston,
Cleveland, and Lower Manhattan. The group's activities included
popular social events, an aura of competitive fraternity, and even
promotional comic books. It introduced many people, mostly the
youth, to political participation and hailed itself as the
newfound voice of younger voters. Later, the structured, militant
Wide Awakes attracted the generation that the partisan instability
of the 1850s had profoundly shaken. In addition, the group offered
young northerners a much-needed political identity.

October 3: Buy British Day: -- A day to
pour yourself some fine English tea, listen to "The Who Sell
Out" and purpose the Pink Floyd song "Money" with
keeping the wheels of commerce heading the UK's way! Since this
day has two sources of origin, this day has an intriguing story.
The first source dates back to the 1960s when some secretaries
spearheaded the foundation. The second was in 2014 when a
nationwide market objective was established by an organization
known as Best of Britannia who organized a Buy British Day event
in Clerkenwell, Central London, dedicated to promoting British
brands and businesses. However, this was not the first time that a
day, or a campaign, was established in honor of supporting
British-produced goods. In 1968, a short-lived campaign called
'I'm Backing Britain' was created and put into action by five
Surbiton secretaries who agreed to work an extra thirty minutes
each day, without pay, to increase productivity and encourage
others to do so the same. It drew an enormous response from the
British public and quickly turned into a patriotic movement that
even got the attention of the then Prime Minister, Harold Wilson.
Some even credit this incredibly random event as the reason for
the high visibility of the Union Flag logo that littered the high
streets. After that, media proprietor and former Member of
Parliament, Robert Maxwell, expressed his desire to take over the
campaign by changing its name to 'Buy British.' A few months
before putting the plan into action, it was realized the campaign
had not made an impact on businesses or the economy at all, and it
was eventually scrapped. It is said that, in 2014, this old,
scrapped, and patriotic campaign was given a new life, probably by
the Best of Britannia. Since the 1960s, the British public has
once again taken to buying British goods.

The Roman Republic: Civil Wars Of The Roman Republic: The
Liberators' Civil War: The Battle Of Philippi: The First Battle Of
Philippi: -- Triumvirs Mark Antony and Octavian fight a decisive
battle with Caesar's assassins Brutus and Cassius. The Battle Of
Philippi (First Battle Of Philippi: October 3, 42 BC; Second
Battle Of Philippi: October 23, 42 BC) was the final battle in the
Wars of the Second Triumvirate between the forces of Mark Antony
and Octavian (of the Second Triumvirate) and the leaders of Julius
Caesar's assassination, Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius
Longinus in 42 BC, at Philippi in Macedonia. The Second
Triumvirate declared this civil war ostensibly to avenge Julius
Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, but the underlying cause was a
long-brewing class conflict between the ancien regime represented
in the Senate (Optimates), and the rising class (Populares). The
battle, involving up to 200,000 men in one of the largest of the
Roman civil wars, consisted of two engagements in the plain west
of the ancient city of Philippi. The first occurred in the first
week of October; Brutus faced Octavian, and Antony's forces fought
those of Cassius. The Roman armies fought poorly, with low
discipline, nonexistent tactical co-ordination and amateurish lack
of command experience evident in abundance with neither side able
to exploit opportunities as they developed. At first, Brutus
pushed back Octavian and entered his legions' camp. However, to
the south, Cassius was defeated by Antony, and Cassius committed
suicide after hearing a false report that Brutus had also failed.
Brutus rallied Cassius's remaining troops, and both sides ordered
their army to retreat to their camps with their spoils. The battle
was essentially a draw but for Cassius's suicide. A second
encounter, on October 23, finished off Brutus's forces after a
hard-fought battle. He committed suicide in turn, leaving the
triumvirate in control of the Roman Republic.

Cavett Interviews Gore Vidal DVD, Video Download, USB Flash Drive
Today, October 3, 2025
October 3, 1925: #BOTD: #HBD! Gore Vidal,
American novelist, screenwriter, writer, historian, critic,
satirists and public intellectual known for his patrician manner,
epigrammatic wit, and polished style of writing (d. July 31, 2012)
is #born Eugene Louis Vidal at West Point, New York into a
political family; his maternal grandfather, Thomas Pryor Gore,
served as United States senator from Oklahoma (1907-1921 and
1931-1937). He was a Democratic Party politician who twice sought
elected office; first to the United States House Of
Representatives (New York State, 1960), then to the U.S. Senate
(California, 1982). As a political commentator and essayist,
Vidal's principal subject was the history of the United States and
its society, especially how the militaristic foreign policy
reduced the country to a decadent empire. His political and
cultural essays were published in The Nation, the New Statesman,
the New York Review of Books, and Esquire magazines. As a public
intellectual, Gore Vidal's topical debates on sex, politics, and
religion with other intellectuals and writers occasionally turned
into quarrels with the likes of William F. Buckley Jr. and Norman
Mailer. As such, and because he thought all men and women are
potentially bisexual, Vidal rejected the adjectives "homosexual"
and "heterosexual" when used as nouns, as inherently
false terms used to classify and control people in society. As a
novelist Vidal explored the nature of corruption in public and
private life. His polished and erudite style of narration readily
evoked the time and place of his stories, and perceptively
delineated the psychology of his characters. His third novel, The
City and the Pillar, offended the literary, political, and moral
sensibilities of conservative book reviewers, with a
dispassionately presented male homosexual relationship. In the
historical novel genre, Vidal re-created in Julian (1964) the
imperial world of Julian the Apostate (r. AD 361-63), the Roman
emperor who used general religious toleration to re-establish
pagan polytheism to counter the political subversion of Christian
monotheism. In the genre of social satire, Myra Breckinridge
(1968) explores the mutability of gender role and sexual
orientation as being social constructs established by social
mores. In Burr (1973) and Lincoln (1984), the protagonist is
presented as "A Man of the People" and as "A Man"
in a narrative exploration of how the public and private facets of
personality affect the national politics of the U.S. Gore Vidal
died on July 31, 2012 of pneumonia at his home in the Hollywood
Hills at the age of 86. A memorial service was held for him at the
Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in New York City on August 23, 2012. He
was buried next to Howard Austen in Rock Creek Cemetery, in
Washington, D.C..

October 3, 1985: #DOTD: #RIP: Charles
Collingwood, American radio and television broadcast journalist,
war correspondent, early member of Edward R. Murrow's group of
radio foreign correspondents that was known as the "Murrow
Boys", television host and spy fiction author (b. June 4,
1917) #dies of cancer at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City at
the age of 68. His burial details are not publicly disclosed.
Charles Collingwood was born in Three Rivers, Michigan. During
World War II he covered Europe and North Africa for CBS News.
Collingwood was also among the early ranks of television
journalists that included Walter Cronkite, Eric Sevareid, and
Murrow himself. Collingwood was born in Three Rivers, Michigan. He
attended Deep Springs College and graduated from Cornell
University. In 1939, he received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at
Oxford University. Collingwood covered World War II for United
Press in London and was soon recruited to CBS by Edward R. Murrow
in 1941. He established himself as an urbane and
spontaneously-eloquent on-air journalist. In 1942, Collingwood was
sent to cover the North African Campaign, where he proved his
reporting abilities despite being considered "green" as
a broadcast journalist. On D-Day, he landed at Utah Beach hours
after the first wave of soldiers had hit the beaches. Of the CBS
reporters accompanying the ground invasion, he recorded a report
on June 6 that made it to broadcast two days later. The other CBS
correspondents on the ground, Bill Downs and Larry LeSueur, were
not able to deliver reports until days later because of trouble
setting up mobile transmitters. When General Omar Bradley told
Collingwood that the French Resistance was about to rise up and
liberate Paris, Collingwood prepared and sent a recording with
news of the liberation to CBS in London so that it would be ready
when the city was actually freed. The recording bore a label that
said to hold it back until Paris was actually liberated, but the
technician at CBS did not read the label and immediately aired the
recording. On that day, August 22, there were still thousands of
German troops in Paris, and the Resistance fighters who were
fighting and dying did not appreciate that the world was told that
Paris had been liberated. The city would not be actually liberated
until three days later, on August 25. After the war, Collingwood
remained with CBS and established himself as a television
journalist. One of his first roles on television was as host of
the CBS documentary series Adventure, which was produced in
collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History and
aired from May 1953 to July 1956. In December 1955, Charles
Collingwood was elected president of the American Federation of
Television and Radio Artists. Orson Bean was the first vice
president and John Henry Faulk the elected second vice president.
Collingwood, Bean and Faulk were part of a middle-of-the-road
slate of non-communist, anti-AWARE organization candidates;
twenty-seven of thirty-five vacant seats on the board went to the
middle-of-the-road slate. AWARE, Inc., a for-profit corporation
inspired by Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy, published "Red
Channels: The Report of Communist Influence in Radio and
Television", an anti-Communist pamphlet-style book issued by
the right-wing journal "Counterattack", itself weekly,
subscription-based, anti-communist, mimeographed newsletter
operated from 1947 into the 1950s by a "private, independent
organization" started by three ex-FBI agents. On June 22,
1950, Red Channels named 151 actors, writers, musicians, broadcast
journalists, and others in the context of purported Communist
manipulation of the entertainment industry. Some of the 151 were
already being denied employment because of their political
beliefs, history, or association with suspected subversives. Red
Channels effectively placed the rest on the industry blacklist.
AWARE offered a "clearance" service to major media
advertisers and radio and television networks; for a fee, AWARE
would investigate the backgrounds of entertainers for signs of
Communist sympathy or affiliation. Collingwood and his fellow
members AFTRA officers earned the ill will of the blacklisting
organization when they wrested control of their union. In
reprisal, AWARE labeled them Communists. Charles Collingwood and
Orson Bean decided to agree to AWARE's demand that they
participate in AWARE's blacklisting of fellow AFTRA members, while
Faulk refused to back down. As a result, Faulk's radio career at
CBS ended in 1957, a victim of this Cold War blacklisting, for
which Faulk held his former AFTRA colleagues in comtempt for the
rest of his life. Collingwood then went on to become the chief
correspondent of CBS and the third host of its Eyewitness To
History series from 1962 to 1963. In 1959 he succeeded Edward R.
Murrow as host of Person to Person. He was a leading figure in
CBS's expansion to include international coverage, and was CBS
News's first United Nations correspondent. He later served as the
network's White House correspondent. Collingwood accompanied
then-First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy on a televised tour of the
White House which she had renovated during the first year of the
presidency of her husband, United States President John F.
Kennedy. The resulting program, A Tour of the White House with
Mrs. John F. Kennedy, was broadcast on Valentine's Day in 1962 and
was seen by 80 million viewers and broadcast in 50 countries,
including Russia and China. He served as substitute anchor during
portions of CBS's coverage of the Kennedy assassination on
November 22, 1963, relieving Walter Cronkite only minutes after
Cronkite had announced the official confirmation of Kennedy's
death. Collingwood was CBS's chief foreign correspondent from 1964
to 1975, covering warfare in Southeast Asia. In 1968, he became
the first US reporter allowed into North Vietnam. The inspiration
for Collingwood's 1970 espionage novel The Defector largely came
from this visit. The book received critical praise for its merits
as a thriller and for its insights into the complexities of the
Vietnam War. Collingwood retired in 1982. He was married to
actress Louise Allbritton from 1946 until she died of cancer in
1979. He married the Swedish singer Tatiana Angelini-Jolin (nee
Scheremetiew) (1923-2006) in 1984, whom he remained married until
his death a year later. His honors include: two Peabody Awards -
the Peabody Award for Outstanding Reporting of the News in 1942;
he received a second Peabody Award in 1955; two Natioinal
Headliner's Club Awards - an award from the National Headliner's
Club in 1943 for "consistently accurate and interesting
accounts of the fighting in North Africa war zone"; he
received a second award in 1949 for "coverage of the
Arizona-Colorado dispute over the division of water from the
Colorado River"; the General Federation of Women's Club
Television Award in education in 1956; and the "Better
Understanding" award from the English-Speaking Union in 1957;
made Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire by

Hordern, English stage and film actor whose career spanned nearly
60 years (d. May 2, 1995) is #born Michael Murray Hordern in
Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, Southern England. Sir Michael Murray
Hordern, CBE (Commander Of The British Empire) is best known for
his Shakespearean roles, especially that of King Lear, which he
played to much acclaim on stage in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1969 and
London in 1970. He then successfully assumed the role on
television five years later. He often appeared in film, rising
from a bit part actor in the late 1930s to a member of the main
cast; by the time of his death he had appeared in nearly 140
cinema roles. His later work was predominantly in television and
radio. Born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, into a family with no
theatrical connections, Hordern was educated at Windlesham House
School where he became interested in drama. He went on to Brighton
College where his interest in the theatre developed. After leaving
the college he joined an amateur dramatics company, and came to
the notice of several influential Shakespearean directors who cast
him in minor roles in Othello and Macbeth. During the Second World
War he served on HMS Illustrious where he reached the rank of
lieutenant commander. Upon his demobilisation he resumed his
acting career and made his television debut, becoming a reliable
bit-part actor in many films, particularly in the war film genre.
Hordern came to prominence in the early 1950s when he took part in
a theatrical competition at the Arts Theatre in London. There, he
impressed Glen Byam Shaw who secured the actor a season-long
contract at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre where he played major
parts, including Caliban in The Tempest, Jaques in As You Like It,
and Sir Politick Would-Be in Ben Jonson's comedy Volpone. The
following season Hordern joined Michael Benthall's company at the
Old Vic where, among other parts, he played Polonius in Hamlet,
and the title role in King John. In 1957 he won a best actor award
at that year's British Academy Television Awards for his role as
the barrister in John Mortimer's courtroom drama The Dock Brief.
He appeared as Scathelock in the Walt Disney's Disneyland
television presentation The Story Of Robin Hood (1956). Along with
his theatrical responsibilities Hordern had regular supporting
roles in various films including Cleopatra (1963), and A Funny
Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966). Other movies
Hordern appeared in include The Bed Sitting Room (1969) and Sink
The Bismarck! (1960). In the late 1960s Hordern met the British
theatre director Jonathan Miller, who cast him in Whistle and I'll
Come to You, which was recorded for television and received wide
praise. Hordern's next major play was Jumpers which appeared at
the Royal National Theatre at the start of 1972. His performance
was praised by critics and he reprised the role four years later.
His television commitments increased towards the end of his life.
His credits include Paradise Postponed, the BAFTA award-winning
Memento Mori, and the BBC adaptation of Middlemarch. He was
appointed a CBE in 1972 and was knighted eleven years later.
Hordern suffered from kidney disease during the 1990s and died
from it in 1995 at the age of 83. He is buried at St. James
Churchyard in Winterbourne, West Berkshire Unitary Authority,
Berkshire, England.

Memorial Park in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. History's first
supergroup. the White blues band Cream, recorded his song "I'm
So Glad" in 1966 to raise money for an operation to save his
life, using the royalty money Cream paid James for using his song.
It provided James with 10K USD in royalties, the only windfall of
his career, and likely extended his life a further four more
years. At Cream's final concert of November 26, 1968, the third
song they played was Skip James' "I'm So Glad". Skip
James was born Nehemiah Curtis James in Bentonia, Mississippi,
U.S. His guitar playing is noted for its dark, minor-key sound,
played in an open D-minor tuning with an intricate fingerpicking
technique. James first recorded for Paramount Records in 1931, but
these recordings sold poorly, having been released during the
Great Depression, and he drifted into obscurity. After a long
absence from the public eye, James was "rediscovered" in
1964 by blues enthusiasts, helping further the blues and folk
music revival of the 1950s and early 1960s. During this period,
James appeared at folk and blues festivals, gave concerts around
the country and recorded several albums for various record labels.
James subsequently recorded for Takoma Records, Melodeon Records,
and Vanguard Records and performed at various engagements until
his death from cancer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of
67. He is buried at Merion Memorial Parkin Bala Cynwyd,

and have been adapted by numerous artists. He has been hailed as

of the most significant figures in American folk music, whose
songs, including social justice songs, such as "This Land Is
Your Land", have inspired several generations both
politically and musically (b. July 14, 1912) #dies of
complications of Huntington's disease at Creedmore State Hospital
(now known as Creedmoor Psychiatric Center) in Queens Village,
Queens, New York, aged 55. According to a Guthrie family legend,
he was listening to his son Arlo's "Alice's Restaurant",
a recording of which Arlo had delivered to Woody's bedside,
shortly before he died. There are two accounts of the dispostion
of his remains; he has a well-attended gravestone at Highland
Cemetery in Okemah, Oklahoma, while his remains were also reputed
to have breen cremated and scattered at sea (though which sea is a
matter of conjecture; likely, the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of
New York). By the time of Guthrie's death, his work had been
discovered by a new audience, introduced to them through Dylan,
Pete Seeger, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, his ex-wife Marjorie and other
new members of the folk revival, including his son Arlo Guthrie.
Woody Guthrie was born Woodrow Wilson Guthrie, in Okemah, a small
town in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma, named after Woodrow Wilson, at
that time the Governor of New Jersey and the Democratic candidate
for President of the United States, who was elected to that office
the following November 5th. He wrote hundreds of political, folk,
and children's songs, along with ballads and improvised works,
sometimes with a Communist leaning. His album of songs about the
Dust Bowl period, Dust Bowl Ballads, is included on Mojo
magazine's 100 Records That Changed The World. Many of his
recorded songs are archived in the Library of Congress.
Songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Johnny Cash, Bruce
Springsteen, Robert Hunter, Harry Chapin, John Mellencamp, Pete
Seeger, Andy Irvine, Joe Strummer, Billy Bragg, Jerry Garcia, Jay
Farrar, Bob Weir, Jeff Tweedy, Bob Childers, Sammy Walker and Tom
Paxton have acknowledged Guthrie as a major influence. He
frequently performed with the slogan "This machine kills
fascists" displayed on his guitar.

Cochran, pioneer American Rock & Roll and rockabilly
singer-songwriter, guitarist, and actor (d. April 17, 1960) is
#born Edward Raymond Cochran in Albert Lea, Minnesota. His
rockabilly songs, such as "Twenty Flight Rock",
"Summertime Blues", "C'mon Everybody", and
"Somethin' Else", captured teenage frustration and
desire in the mid-1950s and early 1960s. He experimented with
multitrack recording, distortion techniques, and overdubbing even
on his earliest singles. He played the guitar, piano, bass, and
drums. His image as a sharply dressed and good-looking young man
with a rebellious attitude epitomized the stance of the 1950s
rocker, and in death he achieved an iconic status. Eddie Cochran
died in a car crash on Easter Sunday while being driven by a taxi
driver named George Martin while on tour in England from January
through April of 1960; his friend and fellow performing artist
Gene Vincent was in the same car crash and survived his injuries.
They had just finished performing at the last of their scheduled
concerts at the Bristol Hippodrome on April 16, a Saturday night.
They were traveling along the Bath Road in a taxi (a
cream-coloured 1960 model Ford Consul Mark II saloon) from Bristol
towards London. In addition to Cochran and Vincent, the other
passengers in the vehicle were Sharon Sheeley (a 20-year-old
songwriter who was also Cochran's fiancee at the time), Patrick
Tompkins (the tour manager, 29 years old), and George Martin (the
19-year-old taxi driver). At about 11:50 p.m. that night, Martin
lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently crashed into a
concrete lamppost at Rowden Hill in Chippenham. At the moment of
impact Cochran, who was seated in the centre of the back seat,
threw himself over Sheeley to shield her. The force of the
collision caused the left rear passenger door to open, and Cochran
was ejected from the vehicle, sustaining a massive traumatic brain
injury from blunt force trauma to the skull. The pavement was dry
and the weather was good, but the vehicle was later determined to
be traveling at an excessive speed. No other vehicle was involved
in the incident. The occupants of the vehicle were all taken to
Chippenham Community Hospital and later transferred to St Martin's
Hospital in Bath. Cochran never regained consciousness, and died
at 4:10 p.m. the following day - Easter Sunday. Sheeley suffered
injuries to her back and thigh, Vincent suffered a fractured
collarbone and severe injuries to his legs, and Tompkins sustained
facial injuries and a possible fracture of the base of the skull.
Martin did not sustain significant injuries. Vincent and Sheeley
returned to the United States after the accident. Cochran's body
was flown home, and after a funeral service was buried on April
25, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress, California. Martin
was convicted of dangerous driving, fined 50 PS (and in default of
payment six months imprisonment), and disqualified from driving
for 15 years. His driving disqualification was lifted on May 7,
1968, after the judge at Bristol Assizes determined that Martin
"had suffered considerable financial hardship". The car
and other items from the crash were impounded at the local police
station until a coroner's inquest could be held. David Harman, a
police cadet at the station, who would later become known as Dave
Dee of the band Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, is said to
have played on Cochran's Gretsch 6120 guitar whilst it was held at
the station. There is a plaque marking the site of the car crash
on Rowden Hill. There is also a memorial stone on the grounds of
St Martin's Hospital in Bath, commemorating Cochran's death. The
stone was restored in 2010 on the 50th anniversary of his death
and can be found in the old chapel grounds at the hospital. A
memorial plaque was also placed next to the sundial at the back of
the old chapel. The Eddie Cochran Memorial Project spearheaded a
fundraising campaign in 2018 to restore the plaque and install a
brand new "Three Steps to Heaven" base at the Chippenham
crash site.

Vaughan, nicknamed SRV, American singer, songwriter, guitarist,
and record producer, best known as the guitarist and frontman of
the blues rock band Double Trouble and his studio sessions on
David Bowie's Let's Dance album (d. August 27, 1990) is #born in
Dallas, Texas, where he is raised. Vaughan began playing guitar at
age seven, initially inspired by his elder brother Jimmie Vaughan.
In 1972, he dropped out of high school and moved to Austin, where
he began to gain a following after playing gigs on the local club
circuit. Vaughan formed the band Double Trouble in 1978 and
established it as part of the Austin music scene, which soon
became one of the most popular acts in Texas. He performed at the
Montreux Jazz Festival in 1982 where David Bowie saw him play and
contacted him for a studio gig, resulting in Stevie playing his
blues guitar on the album Let's Dance (1983) before being
discovered by the great record producer John Hammond, who
interested major label Epic Records in signing them to a record
deal. Within months, Vaughan achieved mainstream success with
Double Trouble for the critically acclaimed debut album Texas
Flood. With a series of successful network television appearances
and extensive concert tours, he became the leading figure in the
blues revival of the 1980s. Playing his guitar behind his back or
plucking the strings with his teeth like Jimi Hendrix did, he
earned unprecedented stardom in Europe which later resulted in
breakthroughs for guitar players like Robert Cray, Jeff Healey,
Robben Ford and Walter Trout amongst others. During the majority
of his life, Vaughan struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. He
also struggled with the personal and professional pressures of
fame, and his marriage to Lenora "Lenny" Bailey. He
successfully completed rehabilitation and began touring again with
Double Trouble in November 1986. His fourth and final studio album
In Step reached number 33 in the United States in 1989; it was one
of Vaughan's most critically and commercially successful releases
and included his only number-one hit "Crossfire". He
became one of the world's most highly demanded blues performers,
and he headlined Madison Square Garden in 1989 and the Beale
Street Music Festival in 1990. On August 27, 1990, Vaughan and
four others were killed in a helicopter crash in East Troy,
Wisconsin, after performing with Double Trouble at Alpine Valley
Music Theatre. The pilot, Jeff Brown, was unqualified at the time
of the crash, and an investigation concluded that the cause was
pilot error. Vaughan's family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit
against Omniflight Helicopters, which was settled out of court. He
is buried at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas. Vaughan's
music continued to achieve commercial success with several
posthumous releases and has sold over 15 million albums in the
United States alone. In 2003, David Fricke of Rolling Stone ranked
him the seventh greatest guitarist of all time. Vaughan was
posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015,
along with Double Trouble bandmates Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon,
and Reese Wynans.
