September 16, 1386: #BOTD: #HBD! King Henry V Of England, also known as Henry Of Monmouth, King Of England from 1413 until his death in 1422, celebrated as one of the greatest warrior-kings of medieval England who despite his relatively short reign made England one of the strongest military powers in Europe due to his outstanding military successes in the Hundred Years' War against France, immortalised in Shakespeare's "Henriad" plays ( Richard II; Henry IV, Part 1; Henry IV, Part 2; and Henry V), especially famous for his historic victory at The Battle Of Agincourt in 1415 (d. August 31, 1422) is #born in the tower above the gatehouse of Monmouth Castle (Welsh: Castell Trefynwy), a castle close to the centre of the town of Monmouth, the county town of Monmouthshire, on a hill above the River Monnow in south-east Wales, and for that reason Henry was sometimes called Henry of Monmouth. During the reign of his father Henry IV, Henry gained military experience fighting the Welsh during the revolt of Owain Glyndwr and against the powerful aristocratic Percy family of Northumberland at the Battle of Shrewsbury. Henry acquired an increased role in England's government due to the king's declining health, but disagreements between father and son led to political conflict between the two. After his father's death in 1413, Henry assumed control of the country and asserted the pending English claim to the French throne. In 1415, Henry embarked on war with France. His first military campaign included his famous victory at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. By 1420, his armies had captured Paris and had come close to conquering the whole of medieval France. Taking advantage of political divisions within France, he conquered large portions of Northern France, resulting in Normandy's occupation by the English for the first time since the mid-14th century. After months of negotiation with Charles VI of France, the 1420 Treaty of Troyes recognised Henry V as regent and heir apparent to the French throne, and he was subsequently married to Charles's daughter, Catherine of Valois. Everything seemed to point to the formation of a union between the kingdoms, in the person of Henry. However, he died two years later and was succeeded by his only child, the infant Henry VI. Analyses of Henry's reign are varied. He was widely praised for his personal piety, bravery and military genius even by contemporary French chroniclers, but his occasionally cruel temperament and lack of focus on domestic affairs have made him the subject of some criticism. Nonetheless, his militaristic pursuits during the Hundred Years' War created a strong sense of English nationalism and set the stage for the rise of England and then later Britain to prominence as a dominant global power. Henry V died of dysentery at his fortress home, The Chateau de Vincennes, next to the town of Vincennes, on the eastern edge of Paris, France, alongside what is now the Bois de Vincennes public park, aged 35. He is buried in Westminster Abbey in Westminster, Greater London, England. His son, Henry VI became King Of England at the age of nine months.

September: Mayflower Day: -- September 16, 1620: The Colonial History Of The United States: The British Colonization Of The Americas: The Plymouth Colony: The Pilgrims' Voyage On The Mayflower: -- Pilgrims set sail from England on the Mayflower to found the Plymouth Colony in present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Pilgrims or Pilgrim Fathers were early European settlers of the Plymouth Colony in present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. The Pilgrims' leadership came from the religious congregations of Brownist separatist Puritans who had fled the volatile political environment in England for the relative calm and tolerance of 17th-century Holland in the Netherlands. They held Puritan Calvinist religious beliefs but, unlike other Puritans, they maintained that their congregations needed to be separated from the English state church. They were also concerned that they might lose their English cultural identity if they remained in the Netherlands, so they arranged with English investors to establish a new colony in North America. The colony was established in 1620 and became the second successful English settlement in North America (after the founding of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607). The Pilgrims' story became a central theme of the history and culture of the United States. The Mayflower was an English ship that famously transported the first English Puritans, known today as the Pilgrims, from Plymouth, England to the New World in 1620. There were 102 passengers, and the crew is estimated to have been about 30, but the exact number is unknown. The ship has become a cultural icon in the history of the United States. The Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact prior to leaving the ship and establishing Plymouth Colony, a document which established a rudimentary form of democracy with each member contributing to the welfare of the community. There was a second ship named Mayflower which made the London to Plymouth, Massachusetts voyage several times.

September 16, 1745: #BOTD: #HBD! Mikhail Kutuzov, nicknamed "The Fox Of The North", Field Marshal of the Russian Empire, one of the finest military officers and diplomats in Russia who served under the reign of three Romanov Tsars: Catherine II, Paul I and Alexander I (d. April 28, 1813) is #born Prince Mikhail Illarionovich Golenishchev-Kutuzov in Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire. Prince Mikhail Illarionovich Golenishchev-Kutuzov-Smolensky's military career was closely associated with the rising period of Russia from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. Kutuzov is considered to have been one of the best Russian generals. He was born in Saint Petersburg in 1745 to a family of Novgorod nobility. His father was a Russian general and senator. Kutuzov began military schooling at age 12 and joined the Imperial Russian Army in 1759. Three years later Kutuzov became a company commander in the Astrakhan Infantry Regiment under Alexander Suvorov. He took part in crushing the Polish Bar Confederation rebellion. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774 he served in the staff of Pyotr Rumyantsev at Moldova for the battles of Larga and Kagul. In July 1774 at Crimea, Kutuzov was severely wounded by a bullet that went through his temple and out near his right eye, which became permanently scarred. He returned to Crimea in 1776 to assist Suvorov and conducted negotiations with the last Crimean khan Girey, convincing him to abdicate and submit to Russia. After Kutuzov became Governor-General of Crimea in 1787, the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792 began. He was again severely wounded in 1788 during the Siege of Ochakov when a bullet was shot through both of his temples. Kutuzov came back a year later, taking part in the Battle of Rymnik and Siege of Izmail. Near the end of the war, he led a decisive charge at the Battle of Macin. Kutuzov was on good terms with Tsar Paul, but had disputes with his successor Tsar Alexander. In 1805, he led Russian forces alongside Austria during the Napoleonic Wars. The allied Russo-Austrian army was defeated by Napoleon at the Battle of Austerlitz. Alexander blamed Kutuzov and demoted him to Moldova for the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-1812. Kutuzov vanquished a four-times larger Turkish army at Rousse and brought an end to the war with a decisive victory at the Battle of the Danube. For his achievements, he was awarded the titles of count and prince. Kutuzov returned at the request of Alexander for the French Invasion Of Russia. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief, succeeding Barclay de Tolly and continuing his scorched earth policy up to Moscow. Under Kutuzov's command, the Russian army faced the Grande Armee at the Battle Of Borodino. He allowed Napoleon to take an abandoned Moscow, which was set on fire. Kutuzov counter-attacked once Napoleon retreated from Moscow, pushing the French out of the Russian homeland. In recognition of this, Kutuzov was awarded the victory title of Prince Smolensky. He stepped down from command due to deteriorating health soon after the French left Russia. Mikhail Kutuzov died at Bunzlau, Silesia, then in the Kingdom of Prussia, now Boleslawiec, Poland, aged 67; his cause of death is not specifically recorded, but he was shot a number of times, in one case most extraordinarily in the Crimea, when a bullet passed through his head via the two temples: that he did not lose his sight made his recovery all the more miraculous. He is buried at the Kazan Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. He had five daughters; his only son died of smallpox as an infant. As he had no male heir, his estates passed to the Tolstoy family, as his eldest daughter, Praskovia, had married Count Matvei Fyodorovich Tolstoy.

September 16: National Trail Of Tears Commemoration Day: -- A day that is as tragic as it sounds. It marks an atrocious epoch in history from 1830 to 1850 when Cherokees and other Native Americans were forced out of their homes and sent to live in a region assigned by the government as a result of The Indian Removal Act into law on May 28, 1830 by American President Andrew Jackson. During this journey, conducted on foot, many people died in a ghastly manner, remembered by their predecessors until today. Hence, the day makes it impossible for us to forget all the people who suffered during that dark time in American history. Trail of Tears Commemoration Day marks the bloodshed faced by the Native Americans forced to leave their land. It all started with the Indian Removal Act, which President Andrew Jackson made legal on May 28, 1830. The act aimed to give the president the power to exchange Indian lands with some lands west of Mississippi. While some tribes tired of fighting decided to leave in peace, others resisted. They did not want to leave their homes to settle in a new place. The resistance led to negotiations that became a formula for a disaster, much because the government had no success in making a deal with the Cherokee tribe. Instead, Major Ridge, John Ridge, Elias Boudinot, and Andrew Ross spoke on behalf of the tribe and authorized a forceful move. By 1836, the State of Georgia had limited the rights of Cherokee, providing them with few resources to lead a peaceful life. In 1837, the move to push out the tribe started, leading to bloodshed. Since the government forced them out in a rush, they did not have time to prepare for the journey. 18,000 Cherokees and many thousands of other Native Americans walked towards their death as they died of hunger and exhaustion. Children, men, and women were also kept in concentration camps with inhumane living conditions. Many passed away due to diseases, and it is said that no elder over 60 and no child under six survived. The "Trail of Tears Walk" aims to memorialize that horrific tragedy.

September 16, 1908: The Industrial Revolution: The Second Industrial Revolution (1870s-1914): The Automotive Industry: The History Of The Automobile: The History Of The Automotive Industry: Foundings: -- General Motors Company is formed in Flint, Michigan as a holding company controlled by William C. Durant, owner of Buick. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were fewer than 8,000 automobiles in America, and Durant had become a leading manufacturer of horse-drawn vehicles in Flint, in the 1880s and 1890s, before making his foray into the automotive industry in 1904 by purchasing the fledgling Buick Motor Company. GM's co-founder was Charles Stewart Mott, whose carriage company was merged into Buick prior to GM's creation. Over the years, Mott became the largest single stockholder in GM, and spent his life with his Mott Foundation, which has benefited the city of Flint, his adopted home. GM acquired Oldsmobile later that year. In 1909, Durant brought in Cadillac, Elmore, Oakland, and several others. Also in 1909, GM acquired the Reliance Motor Truck Company of Owosso, Michigan, and the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company of Pontiac, Michigan, the predecessors of GMC Truck. Durant, along with R. S. McLaughlin, lost control of GM in 1910 to a bankers' trust, because of the large amount of debt taken on in its acquisitions, coupled with a collapse in new vehicle sales. The next year, Durant started the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in the U.S., and in Canada in 1915, and through this, he secretly purchased a controlling interest in GM. Durant regained control of the company after one of the most dramatic proxy wars in American business history. Durant then reorganized General Motors Company into General Motors Corporation in 1916, merging Chevrolet with GM and merging General Motors of Canada Limited as an ally in 1918. Shortly thereafter, he again lost control, this time for good, after the new vehicle market collapsed. Alfred P. Sloan was picked to take charge of the corporation, and led it to its post-war global dominance when the seven manufacturing facilities operated by Chevrolet before GM acquired the company began to contribute to GM operations. These facilities were added to the individual factories that were exclusive to Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Oakland, and other companies acquired by GM. This unprecedented growth of GM would last into the early 1980s, when it employed 349,000 workers and operated 150 assembly plants. On June 1, 2009, after heavy losses, General Motors went bankrupt. Stockholders lost essentially all of their investment. On July 10, 2009, General Motors emerged from government backed Chapter 11 reorganization after an initial filing on June 8, 2009. Through the Troubled Asset Relief Program the US Treasury invested 49.5B USD in General Motors and recovered 39B USD when it sold its shares on December 9, 2013 resulting in a loss of 10.3B USD. The Treasury invested an additional 17.2B USD into GM's former financing company, GMAC (now Ally). The shares in Ally were sold on December 18, 2014 for 19.6B USD netting 2.4B USD. A study by the Center for Automotive Research found that the GM bailout saved 1.2 million jobs and preserved 34.9B USD in tax revenue. Also in 2009 as part of the General Motors Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, the company shed several brands, closing Saturn, Pontiac, and Hummer, while selling Saab Automobile to Dutch automaker Spyker, and emerged from a government-backed Chapter 11 reorganization. In 2010, the reorganized GM made an initial public offering that was one of the world's top five largest IPOs to-date and returned to profitability later that year. Today, General Motors Company, commonly referred to as General Motors (GM), is an American multinational corporation headquartered in Detroit that designs, manufactures, markets, and distributes vehicles and vehicle parts, and sells financial services. With global headquarters in Detroit's Renaissance Center, GM manufactures cars and trucks in 35 countries. The company was the largest automobile manufacturer from 1931 through 2007. GM reached the milestone of selling 10 million vehicles in 2016. Current auto brands are Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Holden, and Wuling. Former GM automotive brands include Daewoo, McLaughlin, Oakland, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Hummer, Saab, Saturn, as well as Vauxhall and Opel.

September 16, 1920: Anti-Communism: Anti-Communism In The United States: Red Scare: The First Red Scare: Crime: Crime In The United States: Crime In New York City: Political Violence: Political Violence In The United States: Political Violence In New York City: Terrorism: Terrorism In The United States: Terrorism In New York City: Mass Murders: Mass Murders In The United States: Mass Murders In New York City: Anarchism: Anarchism In The United States: Anarchism In New York City: The History Of Anarchism: The History Of Anarchism In The United States: The History Of Anarchism In New York City: Galleanists (Italian: Galleanisti): The Wall Street Bombing: -- At 12:01 pm the deadliest act of terrorism on U.S. soil up to that point occurs when a bomb in a horse wagon explodes in front of the J. P. Morgan building in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City, killing 38 and injuring 400. The blast killed 30 people immediately, and another eight died later of wounds sustained in the blast. The bombing was never solved, although investigators and historians believe the Wall Street bombing was carried out by Galleanists (Italian anarchists), a group responsible for a series of bombings the previous year. The attack was related to postwar social unrest, labor struggles, and anti-capitalist agitation in the United States. The Wall Street bomb killed more people than the 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times, which had been the deadliest act of terrorism on U.S. soil to date, and the death toll was exceeded one year later in the Tulsa Race Riot in 1921. The horse-drawn wagon passed by lunchtime crowds on Wall Street and stopped across the street from the headquarters of the J.P. Morgan & Co. bank at 23 Wall Street, on the Financial District's busiest corner. Inside the wagon, 100 pounds (45 kg) of dynamite with 500 pounds (230 kg) of heavy, cast-iron sash weights -- counter-weights concealed within the window frames of sash windows used o facilitate opening and closing them -- exploded in a timer-set detonation, sending the weights tearing through the air. The horse and wagon were blasted into small fragments, but the driver was seen by witnesses leaving the vehicle and escaping down a side street. The 40 fatalities were mostly young people who worked as messengers, stenographers, clerks, and brokers. Many of the wounded suffered severe injuries. The bomb caused more than 2M USD (30.4M USD as of 2024) in property damage and destroyed most of the interior spaces of the Morgan building. Within one minute of the explosion, William H. Remick, president of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), suspended trading in order to prevent a panic. Outside, rescuers worked feverishly to transport the wounded to the hospital. James Saul, a 17-year-old messenger, commandeered a parked car and transported 30 injured people to an area hospital. Police officers rushed to the scene, performed first aid, and appropriated all nearby automobiles as emergency transport vehicles. The Justice Department's Bureau of Investigation (BOI, the forerunner of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI) did not immediately conclude that the bomb was an act of terrorism. Investigators were puzzled by the number of innocent people killed and the lack of a specific target, other than buildings that suffered relatively superficial, non-structural damage. Exploring the possibility of an accident, police contacted businesses that sold and transported explosives. By 3:30 pm, the board of governors of the NYSE had met and decided to open for business the next day. Crews cleaned up the area overnight to allow for normal business operations, but in doing so they destroyed physical evidence that might have helped police investigators solve the crime. The Sons of the American Revolution had previously scheduled a patriotic rally for the day after (September 17) to celebrate Constitution Day at exactly the same intersection. On September 17, thousands of people attended the rally in defiance of the previous day's attack. The New York assistant district attorney noted that the timing, location, and method of delivery all pointed to Wall Street and J.P. Morgan as the targets of the bomb, suggesting in turn that it was planted by radical opponents of capitalism, such as Bolsheviks, anarchists, communists, or militant socialists. Investigators soon focused on radical groups opposed to U.S. financial and governmental institutions and known to use bombs as a means of violent reprisal.

September 16, 1955: Rocket Launches: The History Of Rocketry: The History Of Spaceflight: Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs): Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs) Of The Soviet Union: Maiden Flights: The R-11FM Zemlya Scud Tactical Ballistic Missile (TBM): -- The Soviet Navy Zulu-class submarine B-67 becomes the first to launch a ballistic missile, a nuclear weapon capable R-11FM Zemlya Scud tactical ballistic missile (TBM). The Soviet Navy's Project 611 (NATO reporting name: Zulu class) were one of the first Soviet post-war attack submarines. Like most conventional submarines designed 1946-1960, their design was influenced by the German Type XXI U-boat of the World War II era. Twenty-six boats were built overall, entering service from 1952 to 1957, 8 of them in Leningrad and 18 in Severodvinsk. Six were converted in 1956 to become the world's first ballistic missile submarines, one armed with a single R-11FM Scud missile and five others with two Scuds each. They were designated as Project AV 611 and received the NATO reporting name of Zulu V. The missiles were too long to be contained in the boat's hull, and extended into the enlarged sail. To be fired, the submarine had to surface and raise the missile out of the sail. Most Project 611 submarines were converted to non-combat uses, and eventually scrapped.

September 16: National Choose Your Chocolate Day: -- An opportunity to celebrate what might be the world's sweetest invention. This perfect combination of cocoa, milk, and sugar has been celebrated for thousands of years and has graced the tables of kings, presidents, celebrities and, of course, your grandma. National Choose Your Chocolate Day corresponds with the birthday of one of chocolate's modern visionaries, a woman who no doubt belongs in the pantheon of great chocolatiers, Mary See of See's Candies. To honor this confection, and the woman whose innovative and high-quality recipes have laid the foundation for nearly 100 years of candy-making excellence, See's Candies has sponsored National Choose Your Chocolate Day. The company is offering many fun, informative, and exciting ways to celebrate Mary See and her chocolate legacy. The quiz below will help you decide which chocolate candy matches your personality. Chocolate has been a mainstay of our diets for more than three millennia. The Aztecs greatly revered the cacao plant, and the drink they created from it and even considered it a gift from Quetzlacoatl, their God of wisdom. At the time, it was served without sugar but still was thought to have many positive health properties. It wasn't until 16th century Europe that milk and sugar were combined with cocoa to make the chocolate we think of today. It was enjoyed throughout the royal courts of Europe for centuries, but it wasn't until the 19th century that it was able to be made in quantities large enough for the average person to afford. Enter Mary See. The matriarch of the See family was known for her high-quality candy and chocolate recipes. Born Mary Wiseman on this day in 1854 in Ontario, Canada, Mary raised three children in and around Ontario, and her confections were enjoyed solely by her family for years. It wasn't until 1921, when at the age of 65, she moved with her elder son Charles to Los Angeles and helped him found what would be the first See's Candies location in Pasadena. Mary's recipes strictly called for only the finest ingredients available and stringent production standards. These would become the hallmarks of See's earliest successes and are notably still adhered to today. In fact, many of the candies in the current See's lineup still use those early recipes. By 1925, there were more than a dozen See's Candies locations around Los Angeles and in the ensuing decades, the brand would spread across California, finding a particular foothold in San Francisco, helping to build that city's reputation for high-quality chocolate. Mary See's influence can't be understated and it has been widely regarded as key to the brand's success. The company never adds preservatives to their candies, have strict ingredient quality control, and sell directly to consumers through hundreds of West Coast shops. This ensures that every See's Candies experience is good enough for Mary See. She is so iconic, that boxes of See's Candies still bear her likeness as a reminder to See's customers that everything inside still carries the Mary See's seal of approval.

September 16: Pet Promise Day: -- Supporting pet well-being involves sincere commitment, ensuring animals receive comprehensive care for a fulfilling, healthy life. Much like children, baby pets are cute but they require a lifetime of care. Dedicated to raising awareness about the responsibilities that pet owners make to their furry or feathered friends, Pet Promise Day acts as a reminder for everyone that pets are more than just a Christmas or birthday gift - they are forever family members! Pet Promise Day was established with the purpose of encouraging pet owners or prospective pet owners to be sure that they are committed and dedicated to taking care of their animals in all of the ways they need. To provide a safe and healthy environment, give them plenty of opportunities for rest and play, and treat them like family members for their whole lives! Bringing a young pet into the family can be an exciting adventure, but it also comes with a great deal of dedication and responsibility. Some people enjoy the idea of getting or giving a puppy, kitten or some other animal, but they aren't necessarily ready to commit to taking care of it fully. Pet Promise Day is here to reduce the occurrence of stray animals by encouraging humans to be more responsible with their animals.

September 16: National Stepfamily Day: -- Families come in all shapes and sizes - small, big, biological, adoptive, and even step, and they all deserve to be celebrated. Unlike most types of families, members of a blended family choose to come together. Whether it's because of divorce, estrangement, death, or another reason, stepfamilies need to unite and rebuild their lives together, and that deserves recognition. While love and appreciation go beyond just one day, there is something special about taking out some time to celebrate on a designated day. Special days have been around for a long time such as Mother's Day, Father's Day, Daughter's Day, Sibling's Day, etc. However, blended families were unable to get the recognition that they deserved. As times changed and society became more accepting, recognition came into place for concepts that were historically considered nontraditional. Divorce and remarriage became more common and hence so did stepfamilies. Along with the internal struggles of blending families, stepfamilies have also been subjected to stigma and negative stereotypes by society. These families are expected to fit into negative roles propagated by film and television which often makes it even harder to make things work. Despite this societal pressure, there are thousands of blended families that survive and thrive through all the hurdles for the sake of love and each other. Today, in the U.S.A., over 30% of the under 18 population lives in a stepfamily environment. Blended families are now more common than ever and deserve a day to be celebrated and recognized. Driven by this, stepparent Christy Tusing-Borgeld created National Stepfamily Day in 1997. Since then, September 16 of every year has been a dedication to stepfamilies all around the nation, including her own.

September 16: National Working Parents Day: -- For parents trying to balance work and raising kids, a day off is more than needed. Help out a working parent you know, or do some extra chores for your own. National Working Parents Day is a day to celebrate those amazing parents who work hard all year to provide for their families. It's a time to show some appreciation and share the love in celebration of these folks who are constantly on the job and on the go with their families! Being a parent is tough and often involves balancing a full-time job, child care and a marriage or relationship. Many parents work incredibly hard in order to ensure their kids have food, clothing, shelter and a whole host of luxury items in order to make their childhood great. Although the origins of National Working Parents Day are a little vague, the day seems to date back a couple of decades to 2004. While perhaps it seems logical to suggest that this day was created by an overworked, under-appreciated mother or father who was seeking some basic recognition for their efforts, that's not completely how the story goes. In fact, National Working Parents Day was founded by the National Association of Mothers' Centers. This organization in the United States is a non-profit that supports the cause of working mothers has more recently changed its name to Mom-mentum. Regardless of the origins of the day, National Working Parents Day is a time for mothers and fathers to put their feet up, relax, and take a much-needed break from all the difficulties they face. It is also a day for children to show their appreciation and potentially take on some of the day-to-day household chores! Coworkers, friends, family members and employers can all make the world a slightly better place by seeing and trying to meet the special needs that these folks have - not just on National Working Parents Day, but every day!

September 16: World Barber Day: -- Join in this celebration if you enjoy making others look beautiful! Did you know barbers in the Middle Ages were not only skilled at haircuts and wet shaves, but also at pulling teeth, dressing wounds, and performing operations! These 'barber surgeons' were known for much more than just styling men's hair. They even founded the first barbers' organization in France in 1096. World Barber Day celebrates this sense of community - it's a demonstration of how 'ordinary' barbers can contribute to extraordinary differences. World Barber Day emphasizes how - in just one week - every barber can make a real and significant difference in the world. Barbers used to be the most talented men in their tribes, and they generally specialized in more than one discipline. People were quite superstitious about haircuts and shaving back then because they thought that bad spirits entered the body through the hair. Only the most trustworthy individuals were entrusted with the task of barbering, which was usually the priest or the clan leader. In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation for the unique role that barbers play in assisting people with their mental health. One such example is a non-profit venture in which a salon doubles up as a meeting place for men of color to discuss their issues. A similar program is taking shape in the U.K., where the N.H.S., the country's public health service, announced a 2020 initiative to provide mental health first aid training to barbers. Barbers have been practicing their trade for thousands of years, but it is only recently that barbers have gained recognition for their contribution to humanity. Booksy, which supports thousands of barbers, took advantage of the chance to commemorate a day when customers and barbers get together to contribute money for various social causes. Barbers are often self-sufficient, driven entrepreneurs that work relentlessly to keep their clients happy. It's a lot to handle, so Booksy created World Barber Day to remind barbers that taking a day off, taking some time for themselves, and talking about their difficulties are perfectly acceptable. Aside from acting as a therapist for their consumers, they can also choose to donate together to help a social cause.

September 16: National Tattoo Story Day: -- Today may inspire you to get your body inked! Tattoos are an ancient form of body art that has lasted long enough for us to take an interest in and practice it. National The tattoo train is one a lot of people still get nervous to board. Tattoos are also usually an expression of a person's story. Sometimes even a prediction of where they are headed in life. They serve an important part in cultures across the world and continue to evolve with modern usage. And unlike other art forms, their permanent nature makes them perfect for etching memories that remain dear and indispensable to us! Historically, tattoos can be purely decorative, symbolic, or pictorial depicting a thing or an emotion on a person's body. In the U.S. tattoo exploded in the 1940s and Norman Keith Collins, AKA Sailor Jerry, played a huge role in establishing what is now known as the American Traditional way of tattooing. The Hawai -based war veteran combined what he learned from the American, European, and Japanese ways of tattooing to establish a whole new style that's now known as the American Traditional way of tattooing. Statistic-wise, according to the result of a survey conducted by Statista, as many as 140 million Americans representing 44% of the people that answered yes when asked if they have one or more tattoos, have a tattoo! Although it appears that many people have tattoos in the United States, it is still considered an act of rebellion to get one especially considering that according to the same survey's report, around three to 17 million people have a tattoo around their face region with the tear-drop tattoo being one of the most popular tattoos people get.

September 16: Malaysia Day: -- September 16, 1963: The Aftermath Of World War II: Decolonization: British Decolonization: Malaya: The History Of Malaya: British Decolonization Of Malaya: Malaysia: The History Of Malaysia: The Founding Of Malaysia: -- Malaysia is formed by the merger of the Federation of Malaya with the former British colonies of North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore. This marked the end of a 144-year British rule in Singapore which began with the founding of modern Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. However, Singapore, the smallest state in the country by land area, was soon unwillngly expelled from this new country on August 9, 1965, and became the only country to date to gain independence unwillingly. This union became unstable due to distrust and ideological differences between the leaders of Singapore and of the federal government of Malaysia. Malaysia (Malay: Malejsia) is a federal constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia that consists of thirteen states and three federal territories, separated by the South China Sea into two regions, Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo's East Malaysia. Peninsular Malaysia shares a land and maritime border with Thailand and maritime borders with Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia. East Malaysia shares land and maritime borders with Brunei and Indonesia and a maritime border with the Philippines and Vietnam. Kuala Lumpur is the national capital, largest city and the seat of the legislative branch of the federal government. The nearby planned capital of Putrajaya is the administrative capital, which represents the seat of both the executive branch (Cabinet, federal ministries and agencies) and the judicial branch of the federal government. With a population of over 32 million, Malaysia is the world's 45th-most populous country. The southernmost point of continental Eurasia is in Tanjung Piai. In the tropics, Malaysia is one of 17 megadiverse countries, home to numerous endemic species. Malaysia has its origins in the Malay kingdoms which, from the 18th century, became subject to the British Empire, along with the British Straits Settlements protectorate. Peninsular Malaysia was unified as the Malayan Union in 1946. Malaya was restructured as the Federation of Malaya in 1948 and achieved independence on August 31, 1957. The independent Malaya united with the then British crown colonies of North Borneo, Sarawak, and Singapore on September 16, 1963 to become Malaysia. In August 1965, Singapore was expelled from the federation and became a separate independent country. The country is multiethnic and multicultural, which has a significant effect on its politics. About half the population is ethnically Malay, with minorities of Chinese, Indians, and indigenous peoples. The country's official language is Malaysian, a standard form of the Malay language. English remains an active second language. While recognising Islam as the country's established religion, the constitution grants freedom of religion to non-Muslims. The government is modelled on the Westminster parliamentary system and the legal system is based on common law. The head of state is an elected monarch, chosen from among the nine state sultans every five years. The head of government is the Prime Minister. After independence, the Malaysian GDP grew at an average of 6.5% per annum for almost 50 years. The economy has traditionally been fuelled by its natural resources but is expanding in the sectors of science, tourism, commerce and medical tourism. Malaysia has a newly industrialised market economy, ranked third-largest in Southeast Asia and 33rd-largest in the world. It is a founding member of ASEAN, EAS, OIC and a member of APEC, the Commonwealth and the Non-Aligned Movement. After the foundation of Malaysia, the leaders of Singapore and of the federal government of Malaysia often disagreed about finance, politics and racial policies. Singapore continued to face significant trade restrictions despite promises of a common market in return for a large proportion of its tax revenues, and retaliated by withholding loans to Sabah and Sarawak. In the political arena, the Malaysia-based United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and Singapore-based People's Action Party (PAP), entered each other's political arenas, despite previous agreements not to do so. These resulted in major race riots in Singapore in 1964, which were attributed (at least in part) to instigation by UMNO and its Malay-language newspaper Utusan Melayu for affirmative action for Malays in Singapore. Seeing no alternative to avoid further bloodshed, the Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman decided to expel Singapore from the federation. The Parliament of Malaysia voted 126-0, with all Singaporean MPs boycotting the vote, in favour of the expulsion on August 9, 1965. On that day, a tearful Lee Kuan Yew announced on a televised press conference that Singapore was a sovereign, independent nation. In a widely remembered quote, he uttered that: "For me, it would be a moment of anguish. I mean for me, it is a moment of anguish because all my life... you see the whole of my adult life... I have believed in Merger and the unity of these two territories. You know it's a people connected by geography, economics, and ties of kinship..." The new state became the Republic of Singapore.

September 16, 1810: National Hispanic Heritage Month: -- The Spanish Colonization Of The Americas: Rebellions Against The Spanish Empire: Spanish American Wars Of Independence: The Mexican War Of Independence (Spanish: Guerra De Independencia De Mexico): Mexican Independence Day: -- With the Grito de Dolores, The Mexican War Of Independence begins in the town of Dolores Hidalgo as Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church's bells and exhorted local Indians to "recover from the hated Spaniards the land stolen from your forefathers...", a date celebrated as a federal holiday as Mexican Independence Day. People of Mexican heritage all over the world commemorate this important event in their country's history -- the same church's bells rung by Hidalgo y Costilla rang over 200 years ago are ceremonially rung annually by the President Of Mexico live on TV the night before the holiday. Mexico, once known as New Spain, was a colony harshly ruled by the kingdom of Spain for over 300 years. The native population was oppressed, farmland and personal wealth were confiscated and only Spaniards were allowed to hold political posts. The oppression became too much and a Catholic priest in the town of Dolores named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla had enough. On September 16, 1810, he rang his church's bell and delivered a speech now known as the Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores), demanding the end of Spanish rule. This started the brutal Mexican War of Independence, which lasted over a decade. On August 24, 1821, Spain withdrew and officially recognized Mexico as an independent country. Today, Father Hidalgo is known as the Father of Mexican Independence. Mexican Independence Day has been celebrated every year since that momentous day on September 16, 1810. To promote education among Hispanic students many organizations and companies have established scholarships for Hispanic students, as another way of supporting Mexican independence. Mexican Independence Day has developed into a huge nationwide celebration over the past 200-plus years. The country's leaders were inspired by our own July 4 Independence Day festivities, so fireworks fill the skies at night and the day is filled with patriotic speeches, flag-waving, parades, live music, and home-cooked feasts. Red, white and green - the colors of the Mexican flag - are seen everywhere across Mexico and even cities in the U.S. with large Mexican populations.

September 16, 1991: Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs, Unidentified Anomalous Phenomenon, UAPs): UFO Incidents (Unidentified Flying Object Incidents): UFO Aviation Incidents (Unidentifed Flying Object Aviation Incidents): The 1991 Mexican Independence Day Air Show UFO Incident: -- At the annual Mexico City military airshow held in celebration of the September 16 Mexican Independence Day holiday, Vincente Sanchez Guerrero's video camera captured a UFO hovering in front of a squadron of military jets on maneuver. As Guerro kept his camera focused on the UFO, it came directly towards him, and as it got close to him, his camera turned off when his battery, which showed a full charge in view finder at the time, went dead in the midst of the recording. The Mexican military did not disclose how their planes reacted to their own close encounters with the object, but witnesses reported that five of those jets broke formation and gave chase to the UFO. During EarthStation1 MediaOutlet's J.C. Kaelin's research on The STS-UFO Incident of September 15, 1991 -- the apparent firing of a Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) "Star Wars" space weapon at a UFO during the Space Shuttle Discovery's STS-48 mission, an event that was broadcast live on NASA's live video stream -- he discovered that the two events were one day apart, with the apparent firing of a space weapon at a UFO during a space flight being was followed the next day by a UFO interfering with a flight of military jets. The firing of a weapon at a UFO is necessarily a hostile reaction against a potentially hostile craft, and the provocative nature of a UFO interposing itself before a squadron of military jets, which resulted in the object apparently taking defensive action against the camera that was recording it led Kaelin to conclude that it was likely that the two events together form part of a deliberate coordinated extraterrestrial military confrontation, and that these two events were therefore connected.

Image analysis indicates that the camera captured an object 2-3 meters / 6.5 to 10 feet in diameter. It flew dangerously close to the helicopters, sometimes in front of and sometimes behind the helicopter's rotor systems. The Mexican mlitary has refused comment on the incident.

September 16, 1776: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The American Enlightenment: The American Revolution: The American Revolutionary War: The New York And New Jersey Campaign: The Battle Of Harlem Heights: -- The day after British forces under General William Howe launched an amphibious landing at Kip's Bay on the East River shore of Manhattan, north of what then constituted New York City, resulting in the capture of New York that very day, The Battle of Harlem Heights is fought in what is now the Morningside Heights area, and east into the future Harlem neighborhoods of northwestern Manhattan Island, all part of what is now New York City. The Continental Army, under Commander-in-chief General George Washington, Major General Nathanael Greene, and Major General Israel Putnam, totaling around 9,000 men, held a series of high ground positions in upper Manhattan. Immediately opposite was the vanguard of the British Army totaling around 5,000 men under the command of Major General Henry Clinton. An early morning skirmish between a patrol of Knowlton's Rangers and British light infantry pickets developed into a running fight as the British pursued the Americans back through woods towards Washington's position on Harlem Heights. The overconfident British light troops, having advanced too far from their lines without support, had exposed themselves to counter-attack. Seeing this, Washington ordered a flanking maneuver which failed to cut off the British force but, in the face of this attack and pressure from troops arriving from the Harlem Heights position, the outnumbered British retreated. Meeting reinforcements coming from the south and with the added support of a pair of field pieces, the British light infantry turned and made a stand in open fields on Morningside Heights. The Americans, also reinforced, came on in strength and there followed a lengthy exchange of fire. After two hours, with ammunition running short, the British force began to pull back to their lines. Washington cut short the pursuit, unwilling to risk a general engagement with the British main force, and withdrew to his own lines. Having held their own against picked British troops, the American army received a much needed boost to their morale after the debacle of the previous day, while the British acquired a renewed respect for the American ability to stand and fight. It was Washington's first battlefield success of the war. After a month without any major fighting between the armies, Washington was forced to withdraw his army north to the town of White Plains in southeastern New York when the British moved west into Westchester County and threatened to flank Washington further south on Manhattan. After two defeats Washington retreated west across the Hudson River.

The state visit of Nikita Khrushchev to the United States was a 13-day visit from September 15-27, 1959. It marked the first state visit of a Soviet leader to the US. Khrushchev, then General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and Chairman of the Council of Ministers, was also the first ethnic Ukrainian leader to set foot in the Western Hemisphere. Being the first visit by a leader of his kind, the coverage of it resulted in an extended media circus.

September 16, 1956: #DOTD: #RIP: Klaus Landsberg, pioneering German-American electrical engineer, inventor, producer and station manager who made history with early commercial telecasts and who helped pave the way for today's television networks (b. July 7, 1916) #dies of cancer in Los Angeles, California, aged 39. His burial details are not publicly disclosed. Klaus Landsberg was born in Berlin, German Empire. In 1947, KTLA Channel 5, a Los Angeles Television station funded by Paramount and helmed by Klaus Landsberg, began regular commercial broadcasts, the first commercial television station west of the Mississippi River. The first KTLA commercial broadcast was January 22, 1947, hosted by Bob Hope. By 1948, KTLA boasted a show lineup that included Spade Cooley, The Ina Ray Hutton Show, The Continental Lover, Time for Beany, Korla Pandit's Adventures in Music and Hollywood Wrestling. KTLA went on to be the first to do many things in the history of television and broadcast journalism. Landsberg appeared in many plays during his in Germany childhood. In his early teens, he combined his technical skill and expressed desire to pursue his strong artistic inclination, setting out to prove that the two could be successfully blended. In 1936 he was called upon to assist in the history-making telecast of the Berlin Olympic Games. In 1937 Klaus was appointed laboratory engineer and assistant to Dr. Arthur Korn, the inventor of picture telegraphy. During this association, Landsberg himself created many new electronic devices. The most outstanding of these achievements was the invention of an electronic aid to navigation and blind landings, considered so vital to the Third Reich that upon being patented was declared a military secret, which Landsberg was determined to destroy as a Nazi weapon (he was successful). This basic radar principle later became Landsberg's passport to America when he fled Nazi Germany in 1938. Following his arrival in the US, Farnsworth Television, Inc. hired Klaus Landsberg as Television Development Engineer in Philadelphia in 1938. In 1939 he went to New York for the National Broadcasting Company television division. During this period, Landsberg helped NBC make possible the first public demonstrations of electronic television in America, at the April 30, 1939 opening of the New York World's Fair. Allen B. DuMont recognized Landsberg's qualifications, and signed him as television design and development engineer for the New York-based DuMont Laboratories, a pioneer United States television organization. There he supervised technical operations of the television unit at the U.S. Army Maneuvers in Cantons, New York, developing automatic synchronizing circuits. In 1939 he was contracted to build DuMont's station WABD, as well as produce the station's first shows. In 1941 Klaus was sent by Paramount Pictures to Los Angeles to build W6XYZ, an experimental television station. He ran the experimental station from 1942 to 1947, during which time he produced Paramount's first kinescope.

September 16, 1940: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The North African Campaign: The Western Desert Campaign (The Desert War): The Italian Invasion Of Egypt (Operazione E): The "Battle" Of Sidi Barrani: -- Some four infantry divisions of the Italian 10th Army, supported by Carro Armato M11/39 Italian medium tanks and numerous L3 tankettes of the 10th Army's mechanised Maletti Group, "conquer" Sidi Barrani. It was a small battle for a small village, but Italian propaganda made it out to be a major victory over a major city. Sidi Barrani, then part of the British Empire, is on the Mediterranean coast in Egypt, about 95 km (59 mi) east of the Egypt-Libya border, and around 240 km (150 mi) from Tobruk, Libya. The village is mainly a Bedouin community; though it had food, gasoline outlets and one small hotel, it had, and continues to have as of 2022, virtually no tourist activity or visited historical curiosities. It is currently the site of an Egyptian Air Force base. In response to this invasion, the British launched on December 10, 1940 the two-day Battle of Sidi Barrani, the opening battle of Operation Compass, the first big British attack of the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War, attacked by British, Commonwealth and imperial troops. During that battle, while retreating from Sidi Barrani and Buq Buq, the 10th Army divisions crowded on the coast road and were easy targets for HMS Terror and two gunboats, which bombarded the Sollum area all day and for most of the night of December 11. By late on December 12, the only Italian positions left in Egypt were at the approaches to Sollum and the vicinity of Sidi Omar. The British took 38,300 prisoners for a loss of 624 men and continued the five-day raid on Italian positions in Egypt, eventually capturing Cyrenaica and most of the 10th Army between Sollum and at the Battle of Beda Fomm, south of the port of Benghazi.

September 16, 2019: #DOTD: #RIP: Sander Vanocur, American television journalist who focused on U.S. national electoral politics (b. January 8, 1928) #dies aged 91 in Santa Barbara, California from complications caused by dementia. His burial details are not publicly disclosed. Sander Vanocur was born Alexander Vinocur in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Rose (Millman) and Louis Vinocur, a lawyer. His family was of Russian Jewish descent. Sander "Sandy" Vanocur moved to Peoria, Illinois when he was twelve years old. After attending Western Military Academy in Alton, Illinois, he earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the Northwestern University School of Speech (1950) and studied at the London School of Economics (1951-52). After serving for two years in the U.S. Army, he began his journalism career as a reporter on the London staff of The Manchester Guardian and also did general reporting for The New York Times. Described as "one of the country's most prominent political reporters during the 1960s," Vanocur served as White House correspondent and national political correspondent for NBC News in the 1960s and early 1970s. He was one of the questioners at the first of the Kennedy-Nixon debates in 1960. He was also chosen as one of the questioners in the 1992 presidential debate, as well as one of NBC's "four horsemen," its floor reporters at the political conventions in the 1960s-the other three were John Chancellor, Frank McGee, and Edwin Newman. While White House correspondent during the Kennedy administration, Vanocur was one of the first reporters to publicly ask Kennedy to justify the failure of the Bay Of Pigs Invasion. Vanocur also dubbed Kennedy's coterie the "Irish mafia." Later, Vanocur covered the 1968 United States presidential election in which United States Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated. Vanocur, who had interviewed Kennedy on June 4, 1968, shortly before the Democratic candidate was shot, reported on the incident from The Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California, for the entire night. Kennedy died the following day at Good Samaritan Hospital. On the final night of the 1968 Republican National Convention in Miami Beach, during a convention-wrapping Thursday night round-table discussion with his fellow NBC floor reporters in the vacated folding chairs on the convention hall floor, Vanocur suggested that the Republicans had "kissed off the black vote" in 1968, a comment which caused a media uproar in the ensuing week. Vanocur also served as host of First Tuesday, a monthly newsmagazine that premiered in 1969 and continued after Vanocur left the network. His work at NBC earned him a place on the Nixon administration's "enemies list". After leaving NBC in 1971, Vanocur worked for PBS and as a television writer for The Washington Post. He joined ABC News in 1977 and worked there until 1991, holding various positions, including Chief Diplomatic Correspondent, Senior Correspondent in Buenos Aires, and anchor for Business World, the first regularly scheduled weekly business program. He covered the 1997, 1998, and 1999 World Economic Summits and was Chief Overview Correspondent during the 1980 and 1984 presidential elections. In 1984, Vanocur moderated the Vice Presidential debate between incumbent George H. W. Bush and Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro. He made a cameo appearance as himself in the movie Dave and was one of the major performers, again playing himself, in the sci-fi television special Without Warning as one of the main news anchors linking the various scenes together. Vanocur hosted two of the History Channel's primetime series: Movies in Time and History's Business. Vanocur married his first wife, fashion designer Edith Pick, on March 3, 1956, and they had two sons, Nicholas and Christopher Vanocur. Christopher is a television news reporter and a former news anchor in Salt Lake City television market. After Edith's death in April, 1975, Vanocur married Virginia Backus Wood on December 19, 1975. The 1971 comedy film Cold Turkey depicts a national news anchor whose name is "Sandy Van Andy."

September 16, 1701: #DOTD: #RIP: James II Of England, King Of England and King Of Ireland as James II, King Of Scotland as James VII, deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, the last Catholic monarch of England, Scotland and Ireland (b. October 24, 1633) #dies of a brain hemorrhage at Saint-Germain-en, France, aged 67. James's heart was placed in a silver-gilt locket and given to the convent at Chaillot, Paris, France, and his brain was placed in a lead casket and given to the Scots College in Paris. His entrails were placed in two gilt urns and sent to the parish church of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the English Jesuit college at Saint-Omer, while the flesh from his right arm was given to the English Augustinian nuns of Paris. The rest of James's body was laid to rest in a triple sarcophagus (consisting of two wooden coffins and one of lead) at the St Edmund's Chapel in the Church Of The English Benedictines in the Rue Saint-Jacques, Paris, France, with a funeral oration by Henri-Emmanuel de Roquette. James was not buried, but put in one of the side chapels. Lights were kept burning round his coffin until the French Revolution. In 1734, the Archbishop of Paris heard evidence to support James's canonisation, but nothing came of it. During the French Revolution, James's tomb was raided. James's younger daughter Anne succeeded him when James II's deposer, William III of England, died on March 19, 1702. James II's reign is now remembered primarily for conflicts over religious tolerance, but it also involved struggles over the principles of absolutism and the divine right of kings. His deposition ended a century of political and civil strife in England by confirming the primacy of the English Parliament over the Crown. James II Of England was born James Stuart at St James's Palace, Westminster, England. James succeeded to the thrones of England, Ireland and Scotland following the death of his brother, with widespread support in all three countries, largely because the principles of eligibility based on divine right and birth were widely accepted. Tolerance of his personal Catholicism did not extend to tolerance of Catholicism in general, and the English and Scottish parliaments refused to pass his measures. When James attempted to impose them by decree, this was met with opposition; some academics have, however, argued that it was a political principle, rather than a religious one, that ultimately led to his removal. In June 1688, two events turned dissent into a crisis. Firstly, the birth of James's son and heir James Francis Edward Stuart on June 10 raised the prospect of establishing a Catholic dynasty and excluding his Anglican daughter Mary and her Protestant husband William III, Prince of Orange, who was also his nephew, from the line of succession. Secondly, the prosecution of the Seven Bishops for seditious libel was viewed as further evidence of an assault on the Church of England, and their acquittal on 30 June destroyed his political authority in England. The ensuing anti-Catholic riots in England and Scotland led to a general feeling that only James's removal from the throne could prevent a civil war. Leading members of the English political class invited William of Orange to assume the English throne. When William landed in Brixham on 5 November 1688, James's army deserted and he went into exile in France on 23 December. In February 1689, a special Convention Parliament held that James had "vacated" the English throne and installed William and Mary as joint monarchs, thereby establishing the principle that sovereignty derived from Parliament, not birth. James landed in Ireland on 14 March 1689 in an attempt to recover his kingdoms, but, despite a simultaneous rising in Scotland, in April a Scottish Convention followed that of England, both finding that James had "forfeited" the throne and offered it to William and Mary. After his defeat at the Battle of the Boyne in July 1690, James returned to France, where he spent the rest of his life in exile at Saint-Germain, protected by Louis XIV. While his contemporary opponents often portrayed him as an absolutist tyrant, some historians-beginning in the 20th century-have praised James for advocating religious tolerance. More recent scholarship has tended to take a middle ground between these views.

September 16, 1701: The English Monarchy (The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of England): Royal Pretensions: Pretensions To The English, Scottish And Irish Thrones: -- James Francis Edward Stuart, sometimes called "The Old Pretender", the senior House Of Stuart claimant to the thrones of England, Ireland and Scotland upon the death of his father, the deposed James II and VII, who was replaced by his daughter Mary II and her Dutch husband, William III of Orange, who was also his nephew. James Francis Edward Stuart (June 10, 1688 - January 1, 1766) was born in St. James's Palace, London, Kingdom of England. He was The House Of Stuart claimant to the thrones of England, Ireland and Scotland from 1701 until his death in 1766. The only son of James II of England and his second wife, Mary of Modena, he was Prince Of Wales and heir until his Catholic father was deposed and exiled in The Glorious Revolution of 1688. His Protestant half-sister Mary II and her husband William III became co-monarchs. As a Catholic, he was subsequently excluded from the succession by The Act Of Settlement 1701. Raised primarily in France and Italy, when his father died in September 1701 James claimed the thrones. As part of The War Of The Spanish Succession, in 1708 Louis XIV of France backed a landing in Scotland on his behalf. This failed, as did further attempts in 1715 and 1719. Led by his elder son Charles Edward Stuart, the 1745 Rising was the last serious effort to restore The House Of Stuart. After a lingering illness, James died aged 77 at his home, the Palazzo Muti in Rome, Italy and was buried in the crypt of St. Peter's Basilica in present-day Vatican City. His grave is marked by The Monument To The Royal Stuarts. His claimed reign had lasted for 64 years, 3 months and 16 days, longer than any British monarch until Queen Elizabeth II's reign surpassed it on May 23, 2016. His two sons, Charles Edward Stuart and Henry Benedict Stuart, are buried with him.

September 16, 1875: #BOTD: #HBD! J.C. Penney, American businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist and Freemason, founder of the J. C. Penney stores in 1902 (d. February 12, 1971) is #born James Cash Penney on a farm outside of Hamilton, Caldwell County, Missouri to James Cash Penney, Sr. and Mary Frances (born Paxton) Penney. the seventh of twelve children, only six of whom lived to adulthood. Penney's father was a Baptist preacher and farmer whose strict discipline included making his son pay for his own clothing once he reached his late pre-teens. After graduation from Hamilton High School, Penney intended to attend college with the hopes of becoming a lawyer. However, his father's untimely death forced a change in plans, and Penney was forced to take a job as a store clerk to help support the family. Penney's health problems caused him to venture west to Longmont, Colorado. In 1898, James Cash Penney began working for a small chain of stores in the western United States called the Golden Rule stores. In 1902, owners Guy Johnson and Thomas Callahan, impressed by his work ethic and salesmanship, offered him one-third partnership in a new store he would open. Penney invested 2K USD and moved to Kemmerer, Wyoming, to open a store there. He participated in opening two more stores, and when Callahan and Johnson dissolved their partnership in 1907 he purchased full interest in all three stores. By 1912, there were 34 stores in the Rocky Mountain States. In 1913, he moved the company to the Kearns Building in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. The company was incorporated under the new name, J. C. Penney Company. In 1916, he began to expand the chain east of the Mississippi and during the 1920s, the Penney company expanded nationwide, with 120 stores in 1920 (mostly still in the west). By 1924, Penney reported income of more than 1M USD annually. The number of stores reached 1,400 by 1929. The large income allowed him to be heavily involved in many philanthropic causes during the 1920s. By 1921 he had a home (Belle Isle) on Biscayne Bay in Miami. Penney and partner Ralph W. Gwinn had invested heavily in Florida real estate including 120,000 acres (490 km2) in Clay County. Some of this land became Penney Farms. This was also the start of Foremost Dairy Products Inc. Penney later recruited Paul E. Reinhold to run the dairy. Most of this work was halted when the stock market crash of 1929 and the Clutch Plague left Penney in financial ruin. After the crash, Penney lost virtually all of his personal wealth and borrowed against his life insurance policies to help the company meet its payroll. The financial setbacks took a toll on his health, and he checked himself into the Battle Creek Sanitarium for treatment. After hearing the hymn "God Will Take Care of You" (written by Civilla Durfee Martin) being sung at a service in the hospital's chapel, he became a born-again Christian. Even after relinquishing daily operating management of the company, Penney continued his active involvement in managing the company and its stores. In 1940, during a visit to a store in Des Moines, Iowa, he trained a young Sam Walton on how to wrap packages with a minimal amount of paper and ribbon. He remained chairman of the board until 1946, and after that, as honorary chairman until his death in 1971. Until the end of his life, he continued to go to his offices. Penney directed his stores to be closed on Sunday so employees could attend church. Penney was married three times. His first marriage, to Bertha Alva Hess (1869-1910) in 1899, produced two sons before her death from pneumonia: Roswell Kemper Penney (1901-1971) and James Cash Penney III (1903-1938). After Bertha's death in 1910, he married Mary Hortense Kimball (d. 1923) in July 1919. Mary gave birth to their son before her death of unspecified medical issues: Kimball Penney (1920-1979). In 1926, Penney married Caroline Marie Autenrieth (1895-1992). She was badly hurt in 1928 when she fell from a horse at their estate in White Plains. They had two daughters: Mary Frances Penney (b. 1927), and Carol Marie Penney (1929-2002). Penney lived in New York City at 888 Park Avenue, though he spent the winters in Palm Springs, California. On December 26, 1970, Penney fell and fractured his hip. Just a few weeks later, he suffered a heart attack and never fully recovered. He died on February 12, 1971. The Reverend Dr. Norman Vincent Peale delivered the eulogy at the funeral. Penney was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York City, not far from that of fellow retail entrepreneur, F. W. Woolworth. His estate was valued at approximately 35M USD. Penney was a Freemason most of his adult life, being initiated into Wasatch Lodge No. 1 Free and Accepted Masons of Utah, on April 18, 1911.A member of both the Scottish and York Rites, Penney was coroneted a 33rd Degree on October 16, 1945, and received the Gold Distinguished Service Award by the General Grand Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1958. He typically wore a large ring showing his Masonic degree. Penney was a member of two professional collegiate fraternities: Alpha Gamma Rho for agriculture and Alpha Kappa Psi for business. Penney was involved with the founding of the University of Miami and served on its Board of Trustees from 1926 to 1930. At the end of the Great Depression, Penney teamed with Thomas J. Watson, President and Founder of IBM, Arthur Godfrey, the radio and TV personality; and Norman Vincent Peale, a minister, inspirational speaker, and author of The Power of Positive Thinking, to help Henry Simler, an executive with the Remington Rand company form the first board of 40Plus, an organization that helps unemployed managers and executives. Penney founded the James C. Penney Foundation in 1954. The foundation was restructured in 1999 as the Penney Family Fund, and is no longer affiliated with J.C. Penney Co., Inc., or its corporate giving program. Today, the fund is part of the Common Counsel Foundation, an Oakland, California, consortium of family philanthropic foundations and individual donors. The Penney Family Fund endows organizations in Oregon, California, and Washington state that work to advance human rights, community social, political, economic empowerment, government accountability, and environmental sustainability. In 1960 Penney teamed up with the University of Missouri to establish the Penney-Missouri Awards to recognize excellence in Women's Page journalism, hoping to improve the sections where his stores most often advertised.

September 16, 1859: #BOTD: Yuan Shikai, Chinese general and government official, President of the Republic Of China, Hongxian Emperor of China (d. June 6, 1916) is #born in the village of Zhangying to the Yuan Clan, both of which moved to the city of Xiangcheng, Henan, Qing Empire, China. Yuan Shikai rose to power during the late Qing dynasty, and tried to save the dynasty with a number of modernization projects including bureaucratic, fiscal, judicial, educational, and other reforms. He established the first modern army and a more efficient provincial government in North China in the last years of the Qing Empire before the abdication of the last Qing Emperor in 1911. Through negotiation, he became the first president of the Republic Of China in 1912. This army and bureaucratic control were the foundation of his autocratic rule as the first formal President of the Republic Of China. On 20 November 1915, Yuan held a specially convened "Representative Assembly" which voted unanimously to offer Yuan the throne. On 12 December 1915, Yuan "accepted" the invitation and proclaimed himself Emperor of the Chinese Empire (Chinese: Zhonghua Diguo Da Huangdi) under the era name of Hongxian (simplified Chinese: Hongxian; i.e. Constitutional Abundance). The new Empire of China was to formally begin on 1 January 1916, when Yuan, the Hongxian Emperor, intended to conduct the accession rites. Soon after becoming emperor, the Hongxian Emperor placed an order with the former imperial potters for a 40,000-piece porcelain set costing 1.4 million yuan, a large jade seal, and two imperial robes costing 400,000 yuan each. He was frustrated his short-lived attempt to restore monarchy by the National Protection War that arose to oppose his attempt to return China to monarchy, and by his death from uremia in Beijing, Republic Of China at the age of 56. He is buried at The Tomb Of Yuan Shikai in Henan, China.

September 16, 1903: #BOTD: #HBD! Joe Venuti, American jazz musician and pioneer jazz violinist considered the father of jazz violin (d. August 14, 1978) is #born Giuseppe Venuti in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Joe Venuti pioneered the use of string instruments in jazz along with the guitarist Eddie Lang, a friend since childhood. Through the 1920s and early 1930s, Venuti and Lang made many recordings as leader and as featured soloists. He and Lang became so well known for their 'hot' violin and guitar solos that on many commercial dance recordings they were hired to do 12 or 24 bar duos towards the end of otherwise stock dance arrangements. In 1926, Venuti and Lang started recording for the OKeh label as a duet (after a solitary duet issued on Columbia), followed by "Blue Four" combinations, which are considered milestone jazz recordings. Venuti also recorded commercial dance records for OKeh under the name "New Yorkers". He worked with Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman, Adrian Rollini, the Dorsey Brothers, Bing Crosby, Bix Beiderbecke, Jack Teagarden, Frank Signorelli, the Boswell Sisters, and most of the other important white jazz and semi-jazz figures of the late 1920s and early 1930s. However, following Lang's death in 1933, Venuti's career began to wane, though he continued performing through the 1930s, recording a series of commercial dance records (usually containing a Venuti violin solo) for the dime store labels, as well as OKeh and Columbia, plus the occasional jazz small group sessions. He was also a strong early influence on western swing players like Cecil Brower. Many of the 1920s OKeh sides continued to sell and remained in print through 1935 when ARC discontinued the OKeh label and reissued selected sides on the 35-cent Vocalion label (the OKeh label was revived by CBS in 1940). After a period of relative obscurity in the 1940s and 1950s, Venuti played violin and other instruments with Jack Statham at the Desert Inn Hotel in Las Vegas. Statham headed several musical groups that played at the Desert Inn from late 1961 until 1965, including a Dixieland combo. Venuti was with him during that time, and was active with the Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra during the 1960s. He was 'rediscovered' in the late 1960s. In the 1970s, he established a musical relationship with tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims resulting in three recordings. In 1976, he recorded an album of duets with pianist Earl Hines entitled Hot Sonatas. He also recorded an entire album with country-jazz musicians including mandolinist Jethro Burns (of Homer & Jethro), pedal steel guitarist Curly Chalker and former Bob Wills sideman and guitarist Eldon Shamblin. Joe Venuti died of either cancer or a heart attack in Seattle, Washington, aged 74. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Pennsylvania.

September 16, 1925: #BOTD: #HBD! B.B. King, African American blues singer, electric guitarist, songwriter, and record producer (d. May 14, 2015) is #born Riley B. King (the middle B is the whole middle name) on the Berclair cotton plantation in Berclair, Mississippi near the city of Itta Bena, Mississippi, the son of sharecroppers Albert and Nora Ella King. He considered the nearby city of Indianola, Mississippi, to be his home. It was as a guitarist and radio DJ that King adopted the nickname "Beale Street Blues Boy," which was shortened to "Blues Boy" and finally, B.B.. B.B. King introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that influenced many later electric blues guitarists. King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King Of The Blues", and is considered one of the "Three Kings Of The Blues Guitar" (along with Albert and Freddie King). King was known for performing tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing on average at more than 200 concerts per year into his 70s. In 1956 alone, he reportedly appeared at 342 shows. King worked at a cotton gin in Indianola, Mississippi. He was attracted to music and the guitar in church, and began his career in juke joints and local radio. He later lived in Memphis, Tennessee, and Chicago, and toured the world extensively. King died from congestive heart failure and complications from diabetes at the age of 89 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is buried at the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Indianola, Mississippi.

September 16, 1927: #BOTD: #HBD! Peter Falk, American film and television actor, best known for his role as Lieutenant Columbo in the long-running NBC series Columbo (1968-1978, 1989-2003), for which he won four Primetime Emmy Awards (1972, 1975, 1976, 1990) and a Golden Globe Award (1973), ranked No. 21 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time list (d. June 23, 2011) is #born Peter Michael Falk in The Bronx, New York City into a Jewish family from Poland and Russia on his father's side and from Hungary and Poland on his mother's side. Falk's right eye was surgically removed when he was three because of a retinoblastoma. He wore an artificial eye for most of his life. The artificial eye was the cause of his trademark squint. Despite this limitation, as a boy he participated in team sports, mainly baseball and basketball. In a 1997 interview in Cigar Aficionado magazine with Arthur Marx, Falk said: "I remember once in high school the umpire called me out at third base when I was sure I was safe. I got so mad I took out my glass eye, handed it to him and said, 'Try this.' I got such a laugh you wouldn't believe. Falk was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for Murder, Inc. (1960) and Pocketful of Miracles (1961), and won his first Emmy Award in 1962 for The Dick Powell Theatre. He was the first actor to be nominated for an Academy Award and an Emmy Award in the same year, achieving the feat twice (1961 and 1962). He went on to appear in such films as It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), The Great Race (1965), Anzio (1968), Murder by Death (1976), The Cheap Detective (1978), The Brink's Job (1978), The In-Laws (1979), The Princess Bride (1987), Wings of Desire (1987), The Player (1992), and Next (2007), as well as many television guest roles. He first starred as Columbo in two 2-hour "World Premiere" TV pilots; the first with Gene Barry in 1968 and the second with Lee Grant in 1971. The show then aired as part of The NBC Mystery Movie series from 1971 to 1978, and again on ABC from 1989 to 2003. Falk was also known for his collaborations with filmmaker, actor, and personal friend John Cassavetes acting in films such as Husbands (1970), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Elaine May's Mikey and Nicky (1976) and the Columbo episode "Etude in Black" (1972). Peter Falk died in the evening at his longtime home on Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills at the age of 83. His death was primarily caused by pneumonia, with complications of Alzheimer's being a secondary and underlying cause. His daughters said they would remember his "wisdom and humor". He is buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. His death was marked by tributes from many film celebrities including Jonah Hill and Stephen Fry. Steven Spielberg said, "I learned more about acting from him at that early stage of my career than I had from anyone else". Rob Reiner said: "He was a completely unique actor", and went on to say that Falk's work with Alan Arkin in The In-Laws was "one of the most brilliant comedy pairings we've seen on screen". His epitaph reads "I'm not here, I'm home with Shera" (Shera Danese, his wife). He received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013.

September 16, 2015: #DOTD: #RIP: Lady Bo, African American rock and roll pioneer, nicknamed The Queen Mother Of Guitar, one of the first - perhaps the first - female rock guitarists in a highly visible rock band, rhythm guitar player in Bo Diddley's band in the late 1950s and early 1960s (b. July 19, 1940) #dies at the age of 75. Her place of death and cause of death is still unknown, and her burial details are not publicly disclosed. Lady Bo was born Peggy Jones in Harlem, New York City. Jones grew up in the Sugar Hill section, and attended the High School of Performing Arts where she studied tap and ballet dance and trained in opera. Even from a very young age, she found herself completely consumed with music; purchasing her first guitar at the age of 15. She was briefly in a local doo-wop group, the Bop Chords, which disbanded in 1957. Jones met Bo Diddley in 1956 backstage after playing with the Bop-Chords in the Apollo Theater. Bo Diddley was impressed to see a girl with a guitar case, and this chance meeting led to an invitation to join Diddley's band as a guitarist and singer. She recorded with him from 1957 to approximately 1963, appearing on singles including "Hey! Bo Diddley", "Road Runner", "Bo Diddley's A Gunslinger", and the instrumental "Aztec" which she wrote and played all the guitar parts. Throughout her time with Diddley, Jones maintained the separate career she had begun independently as a songwriter, session musician, and bandleader. She led her own band, the Jewels (also known as the Fabulous Jewels, Lady Bo and the Family Jewels, and various other names, but not to be confused with The Jewels), which became a top R & B band on the New York - Boston east coast club scene the 1960s and 1970s. She eventually left Diddley's band to concentrate on the Jewels and other activities. She was replaced with another female guitarist, Norma-Jean Wofford ("The Duchess"). In 1970, she re-joined Bo Diddley's band, bringing The Jewels with her. Jones was known for playing the Roland guitar synthesizer, an experimental instrument not typically heard in rhythm and blues music. Jones played guitar on Les Cooper's 1962 instrumental "Wiggle Wobble" and percussion on the 1967 hit "San Franciscan Nights" by Eric Burdon and The Animals and other recordings and later backed James Brown and Sam & Dave. She remained musically active well into the 21st century. Many assumed that Lady Bo and Bo Diddley were a couple, considering her given name, but that was not the case. She was married to the band's bass player, Wally Malone. .

September 16, 2009: #DOTD: #RIP: Mary Travers, American singer, songwriter and beauty, founding member of the folk music group Peter, Paul and Mary along with Peter Yarrow and Paul Stooke (b. November 9, 1936) #dies aged 72 from complications related to her 2004 marrow transplant and other treatments. She is buried at Umpawaug Cemetery in Redding, Connecticut. Peter, Paul and Mary was one of the most successful folk music groups of the 1960s. Travers, unlike most folk musicians of the early 1960s who were a part of the burgeoning music scene, grew up in New York City's Greenwich Village. A contralto, Travers released five solo albums in addition to her work with Peter, Paul and Mary. Mary Allin Travers was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Robert Travers and Virginia Coigney, journalists and active organizers of The Newspaper Guild, a trade union. In 1938, the family moved to Greenwich Village in New York City. Mary attended the progressive Little Red School House, where she met musical icons like Pete Seeger and Paul Robeson. Robeson sang her lullabies. Travers did not graduate from high school; she left school in the 11th grade to become a member of the Song Swappers folk group. The Song Swappers sang backup for Pete Seeger on four reissue albums in 1955, when Folkways Records reissued a collection of Seeger's pro-union folk songs, "Talking Union". Travers regarded her singing as a hobby and was shy about it, but was encouraged by fellow musicians. She also was in the cast of the Broadway show The Next President. The group Peter, Paul and Mary was formed in 1961, and was an immediate success. They shared a manager, Albert Grossman, with Bob Dylan. Their success with Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" helped propel Dylan's Freewheelin' album into the U.S. Top 30 four months after its release. An Associated Press obituary noted:" The group's first album [Peter, Paul and Mary] came out in 1962 and immediately scored hits with their versions of "If I Had a Hammer" and "Lemon Tree". The former won them Grammys for best folk recording and best performance by a vocal group. Their next album, Moving, included the hit tale of innocence lost, "Puff, The Magic Dragon", which reached No. 2 on the U.S. charts . The trio's third album, In the Wind, featured three songs by the 22-year-old Bob Dylan. "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" and "Blowin' in the Wind" reached the [U.S.] top 10, bringing Dylan's material to a massive audience; the latter shipped 300,000 copies during one two-week period. At one point in 1963, three of their albums were in the top six Billboard best-selling LPs [in the U.S.] as they became the biggest stars of the folk revival movement. Their version of [Pete Seeger's] "If I Had a Hammer" became an anthem for racial equality, as did Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind", which they performed at the August 1963 March On Washington." Peter, Paul and Mary broke up in 1970. The band broke up shortly after having their biggest UK hit, singer-songwriter John Denver's poignant ballad "Leaving on a Jet Plane" (originally titled "Babe I Hate To Go") (UK No. 2, February 1970); the song made No. 1 on both the U.S. Billboard and Cash Box charts in December 1969 and was the group's only number one hit. Travers subsequently pursued a solo career and recorded five albums: Mary (1971), Morning Glory (1972), All My Choices (1973), Circles (1974) and It's in Everyone of Us (1978). Peter, Paul and Mary re-formed in 1978, toured extensively, and issued many new albums. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. Travers was married four times. Her first brief union, to John Filler, produced her older daughter, Erika, in 1960. In 1963, she married Barry Feinstein, a prominent freelance photographer of musicians and celebrities. Her younger daughter, Alicia, was born in 1966, and the couple divorced the following year. In the 1970s, she was married to Gerald Taylor, publisher of National Lampoon. Following her marriage to Taylor, Travers had a relationship for several years with former Watergate prosecutor Richard Ben-Veniste while raising her daughters in New York. In 1991, she married restaurateur Ethan Robbins; Travers lived with Robbins in the small town of Redding, Connecticut, for the remainder of her life. In 2004, Travers was diagnosed with leukemia. A bone marrow transplant in 2005 induced a temporary remission, but she died on September 16, 2009, at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut, from complications related to the marrow transplant and other treatments. She was 72 years old. In addition to her husband, survivors included daughters Erika and Alicia; her sister, the educator and psychologist Ann Gordon; and two granddaughters, Virginia and Wylly. She was buried at Umpawaug Cemetery in Redding, Connecticut. A memorial service for Travers was held on November 9, 2009, at Riverside Church In New York City. The four-hour service, on what would have been her seventy-third birthday, was attended by a capacity crowd. Two of the many reflections shared at the service speak to the impact of Mary Travers's work and the significance of her legacy. Feminist Gloria Steinem commented that with her poise and conviction as a performer, Ms. Travers "seemed to us to be a free woman, and that helped us to be free." Folk singer and co-founder of the Newport Folk Festival, Theodore Bikel, mused on her roles as political activist and glamorous pop-music touchstone.

September 16, 1977: #DOTD: #RIP: Maria Callas, American-born Greek soprano, actress and beauty, one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century (b. December 2, 1923) #dies in Paris, France of a heart attack at age 53. A funerary liturgy was held at St Stephen's Greek Orthodox Cathedral on rue Georges-Bizet, Paris on September 20, 1977. She was later cremated at Paris' famed Pere Lachaise Cemetery and her ashes were placed in the columbarium there. After being stolen and later recovered, they were scattered over the Aegean Sea, off the coast of Greece, according to her wish, in the spring of 1979. Maria Callas was born Sophie Cecilia Kalos at Flower Hospital (now the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center), 1249 5th Avenue, Manhattan, New York City (she was christened Maria Anna Cecilia Sofia Kalogeropoulos). Many critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic interpretations. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini and, further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. Her musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina. Born to Greek immigrant parents, she was raised by an overbearing mother who had wanted a son. Maria received her musical education in Greece at age 13 and later established her career in Italy. Forced to deal with the exigencies of 1940s wartime poverty and with near-sightedness that left her nearly blind onstage, she endured struggles and scandal over the course of her career. She turned herself from a heavy woman into a svelte and glamorous one after a mid-career weight loss, which might have contributed to her vocal decline and the premature end of her career. The press exulted in publicizing Callas's temperamental behavior, her supposed rivalry with Renata Tebaldi and her love affair with Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis. Although her dramatic life and personal tragedy have often overshadowed Callas the artist in the popular press, her artistic achievements were such that Leonard Bernstein called her "the Bible of opera" and her influence so enduring that, in 2006, Opera News wrote of her: "Nearly thirty years after her death, she's still the definition of the diva as artist-and still one of classical music's best-selling vocalists."
