August 25, 1227: #DOTD: Genghis Khan (also transliterated as Chinggis Khaan), Mongolian emperor, founder and first Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, which became the largest contiguous empire in history after his death (b. c. 1162) #dies of uncertain causes while leading the Siege Of Lingwu in southern China against the Western Xia emperor Xiangzong. Genghis Khan suffered complications from a fall from his horse while hunting the prior winter; Rashid al-Din and the Yuan Shi mention he suffered from an illness - possibly malaria, typhus, or bubonic plague. Marco Polo attests that he was shot by an arrow during a siege, while Carpini reports that Genghis was struck by lightning. Legends sprang up around the event, the most famous recounts how the beautiful Gurbelchin, formerly wife of the Xia emperor, castrated Genghis with a concealed dagger during sexual intercourse. Whatever the cause of his death, the complications of his fall from his horse slowed the siege's progress, as his sons and commanders urged him to end the campaign and return to Mongolia to recover, arguing that the urban-bound Xia would still be there another year. Incensed by insults from Xia's leading commander, Genghis insisted that the siege be continued, and it was while leading this siege that he died. His death was kept a closely guarded secret, and the Western Xia capital city of Zhongxing, unaware of his death, fell the following month. The city was put to the sword and its population was treated with extreme savagery; the Xia civilisation was essentially extinguished in what Man described as "very successful ethnocide". After his death, Genghis was transported back to Mongolia and buried on or near the sacred Burkhan Khaldun peak in the Khentii Mountains, on a site he had personally chosen years before. Specific details of the funeral procession and burial were not made public knowledge; the mountain, declared ikh khorig (lit. "Great Taboo"; i.e. prohibited zone), was off-limits to all but its Uriankhai guard. When Ogedei acceded to the throne in 1229, the grave was honoured with three days of offerings and the sacrifice of thirty maidens. Ratchnevsky theorises that the Mongols, who had no knowledge of embalming techniques, may have buried the khan in the Ordos to avoid his body decomposing in the summer heat; Atwood emphatically rejects this hypothesis. Genghis Khan was born Temujin Borjigin in the Khentii Mountains of North Eastern Mongolia. Genghis Khan came to power by uniting many of the nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia. After founding the Empire and being proclaimed "Genghis Khan", he launched the Mongol invasions that conquered most of Eurasia. Campaigns initiated in his lifetime include those against the Qara Khitai, Caucasus, and Khwarazmian, Western Xia and Jin dynasties. These campaigns were often accompanied by large-scale massacres of the civilian populations - especially in the Khwarazmian and Western Xia controlled lands. By the end of his life, the Mongol Empire occupied a substantial portion of Central Asia and China. Before Genghis Khan died he assigned Ogedei Khan as his successor. Later his grandsons split his empire into khanates. Genghis Khan died in 1227 after defeating the Western Xia. He was buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in Mongolia. His descendants extended the Mongol Empire across most of Eurasia by conquering or creating vassal states in all of modern-day China, Korea, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and substantial portions of Eastern Europe and Southwest Asia. Many of these invasions repeated the earlier large-scale slaughters of local populations. As a result, Genghis Khan and his empire have a fearsome reputation in local histories. Beyond his military accomplishments, Genghis Khan also advanced the Mongol Empire in other ways. He decreed the adoption of the Uyghur script as the Mongol Empire's writing system. He also practiced meritocracy and encouraged religious tolerance in the Mongol Empire, and unified the nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia. Present-day Mongolians regard him as the founding father of Mongolia. Although known for the brutality of his campaigns and considered by many to have been a genocidal ruler, Genghis Khan is also credited with bringing the Silk Road under one cohesive political environment. This brought communication and trade from Northeast Asia into Muslim Southwest Asia and Christian Europe, thus expanding the horizons of all three cultural areas.

August 25, 1543 (1542?): Japan: The History Of Japan: The Feudal Era (1185-1868): The Muromachi Period (The Muromachi Era [Japanese: Muromachi Jidai) The Higashiyama Culture (Japanese: Higashiyama Bunka): Nanban Trade (Japanese: Nanban Boek, "Southern Barbarian Trade"): -- Portuguese trader and explorer Antonio Mota and his companion Francisco Zeimoto become the first Europeans to visit Japan, and thereby unintentionally begin the Japanese firearms industry. The Japanese found their handheld guns fascinating, and they thereafter mass produced firearms for several decades afterwards. While traveling to Ningbo China in a Chinese junk in 1543 (some sources say 1542), Mota and the rest of the crew were swept off course by a bad storm. Among the crew were around one hundred East Asians, and the Portuguese Francisco Zeimoto and Antonio Peixoto (Portuguese explorer and writer Fernao Mendes Pinto claimed that he was on the voyage as well, but this claim is unlikely due to the fact that he also claims he was (more accurately) in Burma at the same time). Driven by the storm, the ship landed on the island of Tanegashima, one of the Osumi Islands belonging to Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan on August 25 of either 1543 or 1542. Antonio Mota and Francisco Zeimoto are officially the first Europeans on Japanese soil; Antonio Peixoto is not recorded as having landed, and presumably died at sea prior to the landing. Their ship was then soon repaired and Antonio Mota departed from Japan. The rest of his life is unknown. Though their unintentional introduction of firearms to Japanese culture was initially embraced, there developed a cultural aversion to the weapon over time, and the preeminence of the sword reasserted itself until the Meiji Restoration.

They set fire to a large part of the city, effectively destroying about half of it. The library of the Catholic University of Leuven was lost, as well as hundreds of thousands of irreplaceable volumes and Gothic and Renaissance manuscripts, including about 300,000 books, about 1,000 incunabula, and a huge collection of manuscripts, such as the Easter Island tablet bearing Rongorongo text E or the oldest Czech Bible. In the early stages of the war, Allied propaganda capitalized on the German destruction as a reflection on German Kultur.

August 25, 1940: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Western Front Of World War II: Aviation: Military Aviation: Air Warfare Of World War II: Strategic Bombing During World War II: European Air Operations During The Battle Of Europe: The Bombing Of Berlin In World War II: -- The first Bombing of Berlin by the British Royal Air Force occurs during a night time raid. 95 aircraft were dispatched to bomb Tempelhof Airport near the center of Berlin and Siemensstadt, of which 81 dropped their bombs in and around Berlin, and while the damage was slight, the psychological effect on Hitler was greater. The bombing raids on Berlin prompted Hitler to order the shift of the Luftwaffe's target from British airfields and air defenses to British cities, at a time during the Battle Of Britain when the British air defenses were becoming exhausted and overstretched. In the following two weeks there were a further five raids of a similar size, all nominally precision raids at specific targets, but with the difficulties of navigating at night the bombs that were dropped were widely dispersed. Before 1941, Berlin, at 950 kilometres (590 miles) from London, was at the extreme range attainable by the British bombers then available to the Allied forces. It could be bombed only at night in summer when the days were longer and skies clear-which increased the risk to Allied bombers. Berlin, the capital of Nazi Germany, was subject to 363 air raids during the Second World War. It was bombed by the RAF Bomber Command between 1940 and 1945, by the USAAF Eighth Air Force between 1943 and 1945, and the French Air Force between 1944 and 1945 as part of the Allied campaign of strategic bombing of Germany. It was also attacked by aircraft of the Red Air Force, especially in 1945 as Soviet forces closed on the city. British bombers dropped 45,517 tons of bombs; the Americans dropped 23,000 tons. As the bombings continued more and more people moved out. By May 1945, 1.7 million people (40% of the population) had fled. When the Second World War began in 1939, the President of the United States, then a neutral power, Franklin D. Roosevelt, issued a request to the major belligerents to confine their air raids to military targets.[4] The French and the British agreed to abide by the request, with the provision that this was "upon the understanding that these same rules of warfare will be scrupulously observed by all of their opponents". The United Kingdom had a policy of using aerial bombing only against military targets and against infrastructure such as ports and railways of direct military importance. While it was acknowledged that the aerial bombing of Germany would cause civilian casualties, the British government renounced the deliberate bombing of civilian property, outside combat zones, as a military tactic. This policy was abandoned on 15 May 1940, two days after the German air attack on Rotterdam, when the RAF was given permission to attack targets in the Ruhr, including oil plants and other civilian industrial targets that aided the German war effort, such as blast furnaces that at night were self illuminating. The first RAF raid on the interior of Germany took place on the night of 10 - 11 May, on Dortmund. During 1940 there were more raids on Berlin, all of which did little damage. The raids grew more frequent in 1941, but were ineffective in hitting important targets. The head of the Air Staff of the RAF, Sir Charles Portal, justified these raids by saying that to "get four million people out of bed and into the shelters" was worth the losses involved.

August 25, 1941: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Mediterranean And Middle East Theater Of World War II: The Anglo-Soviet Invasion Of Iran (Operation Countenance) (August 25-31,1941): -- The Anglo-Soviet Invasion Of Iran, the neutral Imperial State of Iran by the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union, beginss with a multi-pronged coordinated invasion along Iran's borders with the Kingdom of Iraq, Azerbaijan SSR, and Turkmen SSR. Operation Countenance was largely unopposed by the numerically and technologically outmatched Iranian forces. The invasion took place two months after the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union and the Soviet Union's subsequent alliance with the United Kingdom. The attack also took place less than two months after Allied victories over pro-Axis forces in neighbouring Iraq and French Syria and Lebanon. The invasion's strategic purpose was to ensure the safety of Allied supply lines to the USSR along The Persian Corridor, to secure Iranian oil fields, to limit German influence in Iran (Reza Shah had leveraged Germany to offset the British and Soviet spheres of influence on Iran) and to preempt a possible Axis advance from Turkey through Iran toward the Baku oil fields or British India. The fighting ended on August 31 when Soviet forces entered Tehran, after Iran the Iranian government formally agreed to surrender, having already agreed to a ceasefire on August 30. The two powers then announced that they would stay until six months after the end of the war with Nazi Germany, which date turned out to be March 2, 1946. On that date, the British began to withdraw, but Moscow delayed until May, citing "threats to Soviet security". Following the invasion, on September 16, 1941, Reza Shah abdicated and was forced into exile by the invading British. He was replaced by his young son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Bao Dai (Vietnamese: "Keeper Of Greatness", October 22, 1913 - July 30, 1997), born Nguyen Phuc Vinh Thuy, was the 13th and final Emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, the last ruling family of Vietnam. From 1926 to 1945, he was Emperor of Annam, which was then a protectorate in French Indochina, covering the central two thirds of the present-day Vietnam. Bao Dai ascended the throne in 1932. The Japanese ousted the Vichy French administration in March 1945 and then ruled through Bao Dai, who he renamed his country "Vietnam". From 1949 to 1955, Bao Dai was the chief of state of the State of Vietnam (South Vietnam). Bao Dai was criticized for being too closely associated with France and spending much of his time outside Vietnam. Prime Minister Ngo Dinh Diem eventually ousted him in a referendum vote in 1955. The August Revolution, also known as the August General Uprising, was a revolution launched on August 14, 1945 amid the political confusion and power vacuum engulfing Vietnam by Ho Chi Minh's Viet Minh (League for the Independence of Vietnam) against French colonial rule. Within two weeks, forces under the Viet Minh had seized control of most rural villages and cities throughout the North, Center and South Vietnam, including Hanoi, where President Ho Chi Minh announced the formation of the Provisional Democratic Republic, Hue, Saigon, exception in townships Mong Cai, Vinh Yen, Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Lai Chau. On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnamese Independence. The August Revolution created a uniform government for the entire country.

August 25, 1945: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Aftermath Of The Pacific War: Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Cold War: The Cold War In Asia: The Murder Of John Birch: -- #DOTD: #RIP: Ten days after World War II ends with Japan announcing its surrender, armed supporters of the Chinese Communist Party kill U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS) officer John Birch, regarded by some of the American right as the first victim of the Cold War. V-J Day, August 14, 1945, signaled the end of formal hostilities, but under terms of the Japanese surrender, the Japanese Army was ordered to continue occupying the areas it controlled until they could be surrendered to the Nationalist government, even in places where the Chinese Communist-led government had been the de facto state for a decade. This led to continued fighting as the People' Liberation Army (PLA) sought to expel all Japanese imperial forces, which it perceived to include U.S. personnel, who were then openly collaborating with the remaining Japanese forces. On August 25, when Captain Birch was leading a party of eleven Americans, Chinese Nationalists, and Koreans on a mission to gather intelligence in Xuzhou, they were stopped by a PLA force in a small town where the Communists had been fighting Japanese troops. Birch refused to surrender his revolver and harsh words and insults were exchanged. Birch was shot and killed, and a Chinese Nationalist aide was shot and wounded, but survived. The rest of the party was taken prisoner, but were released two months later. The John Birch Society (JBS), founded December 9, 1958, is an advocacy group named in his honor by Robert H. W. Welch Jr. in 1958, supporting anti-communism and limited government. It has properly been described as a radical right and far-right organization. Businessman and founder Robert W. Welch Jr. (1899-1985) developed an organizational infrastructure in 1958 of chapters nationwide. After an early rise in membership and influence, efforts by those such as conservative William F. Buckley Jr. and National Review led the JBS to be identified as a fringe element of the conservative movement, mostly in fear of the radicalization of the American right. More recently Jeet Heer has argued in The New Republic that while the organization's influence peaked in the 1970s, "Bircherism" and its legacy of conspiracy theories has become the dominant strain in the conservative movement. Politico has asserted that the JBS began making a resurgence in the mid-2010s, and many political analysts from across the spectrum have argued that it shaped the modern conservative movement and especially the Trump administration. Writing in The Huffington Post, Andrew Reinbach called the JBS "the intellectual seed bank of the right." Originally based in Belmont, Massachusetts, it is now headquartered in Grand Chute, Wisconsin a suburb of Appleton, Wisconsin, with local chapters throughout the United States. The organization owns American Opinion Publishing, which publishes the magazine The New American. The society opposed the 1960s civil rights movement and claimed the movement had Communists in important positions. In the latter half of 1965, the JBS produced a flyer titled "What's Wrong With Civil Rights?" and used the flyer as a newspaper advertisement. The society opposed the Civil Rights Act Of 1964, claiming it violated the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution and overstepped individual states' rights to enact laws regarding civil rights. It successfully opposed the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s, accused the ERA's supporters of subversion, asserting that the ERA was part of a "Communist" plot "to reduce human beings to living at the same level as animals." The society opposes "one world government", and it has an immigration reduction view on immigration reform; it opposes the United Nations, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and other free trade agreements.

August 25, 1948: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War In Asia: The Indochina Wars: The Vietnam War (The Second Indochina War, The Vietnam Conflict, The Resistance War Against America): The United States In The Vietnam War: Opposition To United States Involvement In The Vietnam War: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War (1947-1953): Anti-Communism In The United States: The Red Scare: The Second Red Scare: The House Committee On Un-American Activities (HCUA) (The House Un-American Activities Committee [HUAC]): Confrontation Day: -- The House Un-American Activities Committee holds the first-ever televised congressional hearing when Whittaker Chambers, a Soviet spy who was a writer and senior editor on the staff of Time Magazine, and Alger Hiss, U.S. State Department official, faced each other in a public hearing before the committee at The Cannon Caucus Room, located in the Cannon House Office Building. On July 31, 1948, the committee heard testimony from Elizabeth Bentley, an American who had been working as a Soviet agent in New York. Among those whom she named as communists was Harry Dexter White, a senior U.S. Treasury department official. On August 3, 1948: Whittaker Chambers testified under subpoena before HUAC, naming more than a half-dozen government officials, including Harry Dexter White and Alger Hiss, as being spied for the Soviet Union while in federal service. Most of these former officials refused to answer committee questions, citing the Fifth Amendment. White denied the allegations, and died of a heart attack a few days later. In an open letter dated August 24, 1948, Hiss claimed that the committee needed to end its "verdict-first-and-testimony later tactics." On August 25, 1948, HUAC called both Chambers and Hiss to appear together before the committee in what became a media spectacle that played out in front of the newly -born television network news television cameras. There Chambers repeated his allegations, with Hiss vehemently and categorically denied them. It was on this stage that Richard Nixon first gained national attention as, being a HUAC member, his persistence had helped break the Alger Hiss spy case; while many committee members doubted Chambers' allegations, Nixon believed them, and received secret information from the FBI about the matter, and Nixon pressed for the committee to continue its investigation. Hiss was ultimately convicted of perjury in connection with this charge in 1950. Chambers became an intellectual leader of the American Conservative movement after 1952. Hiss' friends and family continue to insist on his innocence, though a growing body of evidence refutes this, including revelations by KGB double agent Oleg Gordievsky that Hiss was a World War II Soviet agent whose codename was ALES.

August 25, 1967: American Secret Government Programs: Federal Bureau Of Investigation Operations: The Aftermath Of World War II: COINTELPRO: -- FBI documents, released in response to a Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit, reveals that the FBI and the government mounted an intensive campaign against civil rights organizations in the sixties. An FBI letter released to the public in response to a freedom of information suit describes the government's COINTELPRO program as having been designed "to expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit or otherwise neutralize the activities of Black nationalists, hate-type groups, their leadership, spokesmen, membership and supporters, and to counter their propensity for violence and civil disorders." A later telegram specifically named the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC, pronounced "Snik") and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) as organizations having "radical and violence prone leaders, members and followers." COINTELPRO (syllabic abbreviation derived from (Co)unter (Intel)ligence (Pro)gram, 1956-1971) was a series of covert and illegal projects by the FBI aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, and disrupting domestic American political organizations. FBI records show COINTELPRO resources targeted groups and individuals the FBI deemed subversive, sometimes rightly but sometimes wrongly, including: 1) feminist organizations, 2) the Communist Party USA, 3) anti-Vietnam War organizers, 4) activists of the civil rights movement and Black Power movement (e.g. Martin Luther King Jr., the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party), 5) environmentalist and animal rights organizations, 5) the American Indian Movement (AIM), 6) Chicano and Mexican-American groups like the Brown Berets and the United Farm Workers, 7) independence movements (including Puerto Rican independence groups such as the Young Lords and the Puerto Rican Socialist Party), 8) a variety of organizations that were part of the broader New Left, and 9) white supremacist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and the far-right group National States' Rights Party.

Five hours after its closest approach to Neptune, it performed a close fly-by of Triton, the larger of Neptune's two originally known moons, passing within about 40,000 km (25,000 mi). Through repeated computerized test simulations of trajectories through the Neptunian system conducted in advance, flight controllers determined the best way to route Voyager 2 through the Neptune-Triton system. Voyager 2 discovered previously unknown Neptunian rings, and confirmed six new moons: Despina, Galatea, Larissa, Proteus, Naiad and Thalassa. While in the neighborhood of Neptune, Voyager 2 discovered the "Great Dark Spot", one of a series of dark spots on Neptune similar in appearance to Jupiter's Great Red Spot, which has since disappeared according to observations by the Hubble Space Telescope. The Great Dark Spot was later hypothesized to be a region of clear gas, forming a window in the planet's high-altitude methane cloud deck. With the decision of the International Astronomical Union to reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006, the flyby of Neptune by Voyager 2 in 1989 retroactively became in the IAU's book the point at which every known planet in the Solar System had been visited at least once by a space probe.

That Voyager 1 had possibly done so was not publicly announced until March 2013, and until September 12, 2013, it was still an open question as to whether or not it had. The determination that Voyager 1 had passed through the boundary (heliopause) of the heliosphere (the magnetosphere, astrosphere and outermost atmospheric layer of the Sun) was based on its having detected a marked change in the plasma environment on August 25, 2012. Scientists were at first not certain that this change reflected either Voyager's entering interstellar space or an unknown region of the Solar System. It took some time before the determination that Voyager had exited the heliosphere was officially confirmed. In 2013 Voyager 1 was exiting the Solar System at a speed of about 3.6 AU (330 million mi; 540 million km) per year; as of September 5, 2017, it was located about 139.64 AU (12.980 billion mi; 20.890 billion km) from the Sun, or just over 19 light-hours away.

August 25: National Banana Split Day: -- Today's a day to go bananas! Give your taste buds the thrill of delicious ice cream and luscious chocolate covering a fresh banana topped off with nuts, a cherry and whipped cream. Surprisingly, the original banana split wasn't created in an ice cream parlor but in a Walgreens drug store in 1904. Banana splits were the brainchild of David Evans Strickler, a pharmacist's apprentice who enjoyed experimenting with new soda fountain sundaes in his free time. They were so popular with the college crowd of nearby Saint Vincent College that students willingly paid 10 cents, double the price of a normal sundae. Word of mouth made it spread like wildfire, and Charles Rudolph Walgreens further promoted the banana split as their premium dessert, which caused a lot of customers to try the dessert when they may have otherwise note been interested in it. It soon became an American institution, before going global. In 2004 Latrobe hosted the 100th anniversary of the invention, the same year that it was certified as the birthplace of the banana split by NICRA (National Ice Cream Retailers Association). It also became the home of the Great American Banana Split Celebration, a huge event with food and events for everyone to take part in. Of course, like with all great inventions, there is some contention about its origins (unless you ask NICRA). Wilmington, Ohio claims that it was invented there in 1907 in response to a slump in the ice cream business thanks to the winter season. Whatever its origins, try a banana split today and you'll understand why this amazing dessert is a classic! It blends together the perfect flavor of bananas with the rich sweet flavor of the ice cream, topped with whipped cream, maraschino cherries, strawberries, hot fudge, and anything else your heart can imagine! National Banana Split Day gives you the perfect opportunity to tuck into this sweet treat. After all, who doesn't love a delicious banana split? While bananas may be covered in cream and a few other bad things when enjoyed as a banana split, bananas themselves offer a number of different health benefits. This can make you feel better about eating a banana split! Bananas, for example, are an excellent source of vitamin B6. Vitamin B6, in turn, provides a number of great benefits. This helps us to maintain a healthy nervous system, remove unwanted chemicals from your kidneys and liver, metabolize amino acids, metabolize fats and carbohydrates, turning them into energy, and produce red blood cells. The good news does not end there. There are a number of other benefits that are associated with bananas. This includes potassium, which meets around 10 percent of your potassium intake. It also contains manganese, which helps to protect your skin through the creation of collagen, as well as protecting other cells from free radical damage. Bananas are also a great source of vitamin C. Vitamin C supports brain health through the production of serotonin, which impacts our moods, sleep cycle, and experiences of pain and stress. Vitamin C helps your body produce collagen, absorb iron better, and protect your body against tissue and cell damage. Today you can enjoy one of these desserts (or several) and you don't need to feel guilty about it! Music to our ears. Have fun trying out your own banana split inventions. You won't regret it!

August 25: Kiss And Make Up Day: -- Today's the day to end your grudges against family, friends and loved ones. After an argument, it's easy to be tempted not to forgive. And it's easy to stay angry, but remember, it was Gandhi who said that only the strong can forgive, and the weak can never. Exercise your strength by forgiving - just kiss and make up! The holiday was created by a woman named Jacqueline Milton to re-examine old relationships and find ways to repair them. All this is to say that today is the best day to bury the hatchet! Kissing and making up - the two essential steps in a relationship after any disagreement or feud with any friend, family member, or your partner! The history of kissing and the history of making up are two separate and interesting tales. The first texts (and we mean ancient scriptures, not on your iPhone!) that mention kissing date back to 1500 B.C. The people who wrote them lived in what we today call India. At the time, they would frequently rub noses to express romance - at some point, someone's face slipped, and the joys of kissing were discovered! In 300 B.C., kissing spread out of India, carried by Alexander the Great's conquering soldiers. Soon, it was a worldwide phenomenon! Roman missionaries were sent out across Europe to spread the word on kissing - with their own lips. They even differentiated the types of kisses back then, from the 'osculum' (friendship kiss) and the 'basium' (romantic lip-to-lip kiss) to what would later be known as the French kiss! Kisses became an extremely important part of cultures, so much so that laws were passed around proper kissing, and kisses were sometimes used to validate contracts in the absence of writing and reading abilities. The popularity of kissing died out in England around the 1660s, either due to restrictive church laws or the Great Plague of London. Of course, it would become popular as a gesture of friendship again, along with the handshake. Throughout the next few centuries, kissing became the act we know it to be today. However, kissing was very restricted in Hollywood for much of the 20th century, though some films, like "The Kiss", got away with it. There have also been many famous broken feuds and grudges throughout the ages - whether or not they end in a kiss! One well-known example is the Yorks v.s. the Lancastrians when they feuded for the English crown in the 15th century. Eventually, the war this feud gave way to (the War of Roses) was ended when Henry IV married Elizabeth of York, thus uniting the two families - with a kiss!

August 25: National Secondhand Wardrobe Day: -- How many times have you bought an item of clothing, only to wear it once or twice and throw it away after years of collecting dust in the back of the closet? Sadly, the answer is too many times. Thankfully, there's a movement taking place in America that could help save us from our wasteful selves! Buying clothes second hand and donating your used clothing creates a positive cycle that is crucial for cutting back our waste. Unfortunately, there's a stigma surrounding secondhand clothing stores, or thrift shops, but it's time to bring this to light and talk about why it's so flawed. Secondhand shopping saves you money, has a positive impact on the environment, and if done correctly, can certainly lead to a closet of some cool new duds. So on August 25, head to your favorite thrift store and get some new (old) threads! We are not advocating wearing tattered clothes or items that are clearly unhygienic, but buying secondhand clothes from reputable sources has so many great benefits that we can't imagine why it gets frowned upon! The first and most obvious benefit is the savings; you get articles for a fraction of the price of retail. The clothes are in great condition, and if you take your time, you can find vintage designer clothes or even licensed merchandise. You will also find that, as compared to fast fashion, the quality and longevity of secondhand clothing are mostly better. The next and most important reason for buying secondhand is to conserve the Earth's resources, decrease pollution, and have a more sustainable lifestyle. Tons of clothing is discarded and dumped in landfills, which is such a tragic waste! Destroying the environment and wasting your hard-earned money on new clothing just because a certain article is no longer trendy is horribly wasteful. Before the Industrial Revolution, clothing was expensive, limited, and not as easily disposable. Following the Industrial Revolution, mass production of clothing led to mass consumerism. Soon, people began buying clothes often and tossing old ones out. And the stigma attached to secondhand clothing - that it is a sign of lack of money - began rearing its head. This changed when Christian ministries started drives to collect clothing and accessories to resell to fund their programs. Thrift stores started to pop up, benefiting and giving an incentive to those who were providing charity services. Today, Gen Zs and Millennials are active in promoting sustainable fashion and reducing waste. 77% of Millennials prefer purchasing clothing that is environmentally friendly.

August 25: National Park Service Founders Day: -- August 25, 1916: President Woodrow Wilson signs The National Park Service Organic Act, thereby founding The United States National Park Service, in order "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations". National Park Service Founders Day is an annual observation on this date to recognize the superior conservation and preservation efforts of the National Parks System. Whenever you are enjoying scenic trails, open spaces, watersheds, or recreational areas, remember that the National Parks Service works hard to provide a natural outdoor resource accessible to every American. They are also responsible for making hiking and biking trails accessible to all of us. The National Parks System is committed to creating outdoor experiences like no other. All national parks in the US charm us with their beauty and teach us so much about local geography and history. The first national park, Yellowstone, was established in 1872. Congress passed legislation to preserve the land as a public park that would benefit the Americans. This made America the first country in the world to create a public park solely for the benefit of its citizens. This would be the first of many steps that the government would take to create and preserve national land, forests, coastal regions, wildlife refuges, and historic sites for posterity. At the time when the National Park Service was founded, there were only 33 federally created areas. This included the National Capital Parks, the National Mall, and the White House in Washington D.C. Today, there are more than 400 areas, including 59 fully designated national parks that are looked after by the National Park Service. Covering more than 84 million acres, they range from the tiny Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial in Pennsylvania of only .02 acres, to Alaska's Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve spanning a vast 13.2 million acres. The National Park Service has 22,000 workers who are involved in permanent, temporary, and seasonal employment. An additional 340,000 volunteers are also enrolled with the service. These parks welcome almost 300 million visitors every year.

August 25: Uruguay Independence Day: -- August 25, 1825: Uruguay declares its independence from Brazil, an event observed annually throughout the nation as a festive celebration of the rich, diverse culture of the country, home to only 3,495,527 people as of April 2022. Another 630,000 people of Uruguayan descent around the world celebrate the Uruguayan victory after a long and bloody rebellion against Spain, and then, Brazil, which resulted in their independence. The struggle for independence in Uruguay dates back to the early 1500s when Portuguese explorers and Spanish colonists arrived in the region. The country's lack of natural resources made the interest in settling and colonizing it a symbol of imperial dominance rather than exploitation. The Spanish were quick to establish cattle farms, using the land to set up a wealthy supply of cattle. The native Uruguayan population was ruthlessly pushed out of their homeland and eradicated before the second half of the 19th century. For centuries, Uruguay was an area riddled with conflict, a historically poor country as a result of foreign powers interfering and exploiting the small population. After Uruguay defeated Spain in 1811 and moved out from under the sovereign yoke of the colonial empire, they were soon annexed by Brazil - under the control of Portugal - their larger and more powerful neighbor. The Brazilian Empire was established shortly after Portugal left the continent, and Uruguay, along with Argentina, was ruled under one banner. In 1825, Uruguay joined many other nations to rebel and push for independence, leading to a 500-day war that ended in 1828 with a treaty brokered by British diplomat Viscount John Ponsonby. The history of conflict in Uruguay was finally over, at least for some time, and the excitement for the nation's freedom remains alive to this day. After enduring conflict and civil unrest for almost 200 years, Uruguay has become a nation known for its incredibly welcoming population, friendly citizens, and beautiful landscape. Over the past decades, Uruguayans have experienced a steady rise in the increase of living conditions and general wellbeing.

August 24, 1991: Independence Day Of Belarus: -- Belarus gains its independence from the Soviet Union when, with the support of the Communist Party, the country's name was changed to the Republic of Belarus. In March 1990, elections for seats in the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR took place, with the pro-independence Belarusian Popular Front taking 10% of the seats. Belarus declared itself sovereign on 27 July 1990 by issuing the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic. Stanislav Shushkevich, the chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus, met with Boris Yeltsin of Russia and Leonid Kravchuk of Ukraine on 8 December 1991 in Belavezhskaya Pushcha to formally declare the Dissolution Of The Soviet Union and the formation of the Commonwealth of Independent States. A national constitution was adopted in March 1994, and thereby the functions of prime minister were given to the President of Belarus.

August 25: The Day Of Songun (North Korea): -- An annual North Korean holiday that commemorates the start of the military-first rule in the nation, under the leadership of Kim Jong-il. The Kim family is the ruling family of North Korea, and they have held the seat of power ever since establishing the country in 1948. The Songun concept places the top-most priority on members of the military, further enforcing the Korean People's Army (K.P.A.) position in the allocation of resources and state affairs. However, the term Songun lost its meaning over time, and its real purpose concealed yet another way of upholding the North Korean Kim family's autocracy. Songun translates to 'military-first,' which has been North Korea's governing credo for almost 60 years. Its origins, on the other hand, may be traced back to the anti-Japanese war in the 1930s, when North Korea's founder, Kim Il-sung, was in power. After a visit to the Seoul Ryu Kyong Su Guards, 105th Tank Division with his father, his son and successor Kim Jong-il founded the Songun concept. Because it was one of the important advances from Seoul to Taejon (Daejeon) during the Korean War, this division has historical significance for the country. Upon his visit to the tank division, Kim Jong-il devised the military-first system to classify every citizen into three broad groups, with priority being given to the military and the Korean People's Army (K.P.A.). He believed that all problems within their society could be corrected by giving precedence to military affairs. However, over time and under the rule of Kim Jong-un, the concept seems to have dwindled in meaning in a bid to balance the efforts of the ruling party, the Workers' Party of Korea (W.P.K.), and the Korean People's Army (K.P.A.) which was the ruling party all through previous eras. The term is now also loosely used to signify anything 'good.' Furthermore, as the living conditions of military members decline, the Day of Songun has simply become yet another day to mark the person and life of Kim Jong-il.

August 25, 1819: #DOTD: #RIP: James Watt, Scottish-English inventor, mechanical engineer, chemist, measuring instrument maker and Freemason (b. January 30, 1736) #dies at his home "Heathfield Hall" near Handsworth in Staffordshire (now part of Birmingham) at the age of 83. He was buried on September 2 in the graveyard of St Mary's Church, Handsworth. The church has since been extended and his grave is now inside the church. James Watt FRS FRSE was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. He improved on Thomas Newcomen's 1712 Newcomen steam engine with his Watt steam engine in 1776, an improvement which was fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution in both his native Great Britain and the rest of the world. While working as an measuring instrument maker (known simply as an instrument maker) at the University of Glasgow, Watt became interested in the technology of steam engines. He realised that contemporary engine designs wasted a great deal of energy by repeatedly cooling and reheating the cylinder. Watt introduced a design enhancement, the separate condenser, which avoided this waste of energy and radically improved the power, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of steam engines. Eventually he adapted his engine to produce rotary motion, greatly broadening its use beyond pumping water. Watt attempted to commercialise his invention, but experienced great financial difficulties until he entered a partnership with Matthew Boulton in 1775. The new firm of Boulton and Watt was eventually highly successful and Watt became a wealthy man. In his retirement, Watt continued to develop new inventions though none was as significant as his steam engine work.He developed the concept of horsepower (one mechanical horsepower lifts 550 pounds (250 kg) by 1 foot in 1 second), and the watt (the energy transfer of 1 joule per second (a joule being the energy transferred to an object when a force of one newton (the force needed to accelerate one kilogram of mass at the rate of one metre per second squared) acts on that object through a distance of one metre), which is the standard SI unit of power (The International System Of Units, abbreviated from the French Systeme International (d'Unites), the modern form of the metric system), was named after him.

August 24-27, 410: Rome: Ancient Rome: The Western Roman Empire: The Fall Of The Western Roman Empire (The Fall Of The Roman Empire, The Fall Of Rome): Sacks Of Rome: The Sack Of Rome (410) (August 24-27, 410): -- The Visigoths under King Alaric I continue to pillage Rome. At that time, Rome was no longer the capital of the Western Roman Empire, having been replaced in that position first by Mediolanum in 286 and then by Ravenna in 402. Nevertheless, the city of Rome retained a paramount position as "the eternal city" and a spiritual center of the Empire. The sack was a major shock to contemporaries, friends and foes of the Empire alike. This was the first time in almost 800 years that Rome had fallen to a foreign enemy. The previous Sack Of Rome had been accomplished by the Gauls under their leader Brennus in 390 or 387/6 BC. The sacking of 410 is seen as a major landmark in the fall of the Western Roman Empire. St. Jerome, living in Bethlehem at the time, wrote; "the city which had taken the whole world was itself taken."

August 25, 1912: China: The History Of China: The Century Of Humiliation (The Hundred Years Of National Humiliation) (1838-1945): The Kuomintang (KMT) (The Guomindang [GMD], The Nationalist Party of China [NPC], The Chinese Nationalist Party [CNP]): -- The Kuomintang is founded for the first time in Peking, China at the Huguang Guild Hall in Peking, where the Tongmenghui and five smaller pro-revolution parties merged to contest the first national elections. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, a proponent of Chinese nationalism and democracy who founded the Revive China Society at the capital of the Republic of Hawaii, Honolulu, on November 24, 1894, was chosen as the party chairman, with Huang Xing, a Chinese revolutionary leader and politician who ultimately became the first commander-in-chief of the Republic of China, as his deputy. The KMT traces its ideological and organizational roots to the work of Sun Yat-Sen. (Sun had joined forceson on August 20, 1905 with other anti-monarchist societies in Tokyo, Empire of Japan, to form the Tongmenghui, a group committed to the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and to establish a republic in China.) The most influential member of the party was the third ranking Song Jiaoren, who mobilized mass support from gentry and merchants for the Nationalists to advocate a constitutional parliamentary democracy and oppose constitutional monarchists. Because Sun did not have military power, he had ceded the provisional presidency of the republic to General Yuan Shikai, who had arranged for the abdication of Puyi, the last Emperor, on February 12. The party and sought to check the power of Yuan. The Nationalists won an overwhelming majority in the first National Assembly election in December 1912. However, Yuan soon began to ignore the parliament in making presidential decisions. Song Jiaoren was assassinated in Shanghai in 1913. Members of the Nationalists, led by Sun Yat-Sen, suspected that Yuan was behind the plot and thus staged the Second Revolution in July 1913, a poorly planned and ill-supported armed rising to overthrow Yuan, and failed. Yuan, claiming subversiveness and betrayal, expelled adherents of the KMT from the parliament. Yuan dissolved the Nationalists, whose members had largely fled into exile in Japan, in November and dismissed the parliament early in 1914. Yuan Shikai proclaimed himself emperor in December 1915. While exiled in Japan in 1914, Sun established the Chinese Revolutionary Party on 8 July 1914, but many of his old revolutionary comrades, including Huang Xing, Wang Jingwei, Hu Hanmin and Chen Jiongming, refused to join him or support his efforts in inciting armed uprising against Yuan. To join the Revolutionary Party, members had to take an oath of personal loyalty to Sun, which many old revolutionaries regarded as undemocratic and contrary to the spirit of the revolution. As a result, he became largely sidelined within the Republican movement during this period. Sun returned to China in 1917 to establish a military junta at Canton to oppose the Beiyang government but was soon forced out of office and exiled to Shanghai. There, with renewed support, he resurrected the KMT on 10 October 1919, under the name Kuomintang of China (Chinese: Zhongguo Guomindang, "China Nationalist Party"), and established its headquarters in Canton in 1920.

August 25, 1947: The Aftermath Of World War II: World War II: The Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Decolonisation Of Asia: Indonesian National Revolution: United Nations Security Council Resolutions 30 (UNSCR30) And 31 (UNSCR31): -- The United Nations General Assembly adopts United Nations Security Council Resolutions 30 (UNSCR30) and 31 (UNSCR31) in an attempt to peacefully meditiate between the warring Indonesian factions involved in the Indonesian National Revolution. United Nations Security Council Resolution 30 (UNSCR30) requested that each of the U.N.'s members recall a diplomatic officer from Batavia to instruct them on the situation. It was adopted upon having learned of the desire of both the Netherlands and Indonesian Nationalists in the Indonesian National Revolution to comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution 27 (UNSCR27), adopted on August 1, 1947, which called for the opposing Netherlands and Indonesian Republicans in the Indonesian National Revolution to lay down their arms and to allow a peaceful mediation of the conflict. United Nations Security Council Resolution 31 (UNSCR31) offered to assist in the peaceful resolution of the Indonesian National Revolution by setting up a committee of three members; one to be chosen by the Netherlands, one to be chosen by Indonesia and the third to be chosen by the other two members of the committee. The Indonesian National Revolution. also known as the Indonesian War of Independence, was an armed conflict and diplomatic struggle between the Republic of Indonesia and the Dutch Empire, and an internal social revolution during postwar and postcolonial Indonesia. The four-year struggle involved sporadic but bloody armed conflict, internal Indonesian political and communal upheavals, and two major international diplomatic interventions. Dutch military forces (and, for a while, the forces of the World War II Allies) were able to control the major towns, cities and industrial assets in Republican heartlands on Java and Sumatra but could not control the countryside. By 1949, international pressure on the Netherlands and the partial military stalemate became such that it recognised Indonesian independence. The revolution marked the end of the colonial administration of the Dutch East Indies, except for Netherlands New Guinea. It also significantly changed ethnic castes as well as reducing the power of many of the local rulers (raja). It did not significantly improve the economic or political fortune of the majority of the population, although a few Indonesians were able to gain a larger role in commerce.

August 25, 1950: April 8, 1952: The Korean War: Korea: The History Of Korea: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Korean Conflict: The Cold War (1947-1953): The Cold War In Asia: The Korean War: The United States Home Front During The Korean War: Labor Union Disputes (Trade Union Disputes): Strikes (Strike Actions, Labor Strikes, Labour Strikes): The 1950 U.S. Army Seizure Of American Railroads: -- President Harry Truman orders Secretary of the Army Frank Pace have U.S. Army troops seize control of the nation's railroads to avert a strike. Truman said that "governmental seizure [of the railroads] is imperative" to protect American citizens as well as "essential to the national defense and security of the nation." Truman acted in anticipation of an imminent strike by railroad workers, two months after the United Nations, led by the United States, had intervened in Korea in an ultimately successful effort to repel an invasion by communist-led North Korea. The strike plans arose out of more than a year of discord between unions and rail companies over wage demands and proposed work-rule changes Truman initially created an emergency board in hopes that it could fashion a negotiated settlement between the unions and the owners, forestalling a walkout. However, when the unions rejected the presidential initiative, Truman felt compelled to act. Soon after Truman signed an executive order, Frank Pace Jr., the secretary of the Army, said: "We must not permit the flow of essential support to the forces in Korea to be interrupted." Karl Bendetsen, the assistant secretary of the Army, sent a telegram to the union presidents and rail companies, asking whether labor and management would work under Army control. Both sides agreed to do so. In theory, the unions struck; in practice, the railroads continued to operate under the nominal military control.

William Herschel was born Frederick William Herschel in the Electorate of Hanover in Germany, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. He frequently collaborated with his younger sister and fellow astronomer Caroline Herschel, whose most significant contributions to astronomy were the discoveries of several comets, including the periodic comet 35P/Herschel-Rigollet, which bears her name, and was the first woman to receive a salary as a scientist, and the first woman in England to hold a government position. William Herschel followed his father into the military band of Hanover, before emigrating to Great Britain in 1757 at the age of nineteen. Herschel constructed his first large telescope in 1774, after which he spent nine years carrying out sky surveys to investigate double stars. Herschel published catalogues of nebulae in 1802 (2,500 objects) and in 1820 (5,000 objects). The resolving power of the Herschel telescopes revealed that many objects called nebulae in the Messier catalogue were actually clusters of stars. On March 13, 1781 while making observations he made note of a new object in the constellation of Gemini. This would, after several weeks of verification and consultation with other astronomers, be confirmed to be a new planet, eventually given the name of Uranus. This was the first planet to be discovered since antiquity, and Herschel became famous overnight. As a result of this discovery, George III appointed him Court Astronomer. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and grants were provided for the construction of new telescopes. Herschel pioneered the use of astronomical spectrophotometry, using prisms and temperature measuring equipment to measure the wavelength distribution of stellar spectra. In the course of these investigations, Other work included an improved determination of the rotation period of Mars, the discovery that the Martian polar caps vary seasonally, the discovery of Titania and Oberon (moons of Uranus) and Enceladus and Mimas (moons of Saturn). Herschel was made a Knight of the Royal Guelphic Order in 1816. He was the first President of the Royal Astronomical Society when he helped to found it in 1820. After his death, his work was continued by his only son, Sir John Frederick William Herschel, 1st Baronet KH FRS, the polymath inventor of the blueprint, mathematician, astronomer, chemist, inventor, experimental photographer and botanist.

August 25, 2012: #DOTD: #RIP: Neil Armstrong, American pilot, naval aviator, test pilot, aerospace engineer, university professor, television host and astronaut who was the first man to walk on the moon (b. August 5, 1930) #dies of complications from an August 7 bypass surgery at Mercy Faith-Fairfield Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio to relieve coronary artery disease, aged 82; on that same day, the Voyager 1 spacecraft entered interstellar space, becoming the first man-made object to do so. President Barack Obama issued a statement memorializing Armstrong as "among the greatest of American heroes-not just of his time, but of all time", and added that Armstrong had carried the aspirations of the United States' citizens and had delivered "a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten." Armstrong's family released a statement, which included "For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink." It prompted many responses, including the Twitter hashtag "#WinkAtTheMoon". Buzz Aldrin called Armstrong "a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew", and said he was disappointed that they would not be able to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing together in 2019. Michael Collins said, "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly." A tribute was held for Armstrong on September 13, at Washington National Cathedral, whose Space Window depicts the Apollo 11 mission and holds a sliver of Moon rock amid its stained-glass panels. In attendance were Armstrong's Apollo 11 crewmates, Collins and Aldrin; Gene Cernan, the Apollo 17 mission commander and last man to walk on the Moon; and former senator and astronaut John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth. In his eulogy, Charles Bolden praised Armstrong's "courage, grace, and humility". Cernan recalled Armstrong's low-fuel approach to the Moon: "When the gauge says empty, we all know there's a gallon or two left in the tank!" Diana Krall sang the song "Fly Me to the Moon". Collins led prayers. David Scott spoke, possibly for the first time, about an incident during their Gemini 8 mission: minutes before the hatch was to be sealed, a small chip of dried glue fell into the latch of his harness and prevented it from being buckled, threatening to abort the mission. Armstrong then called on Conrad to solve the problem, which he did, and the mission proceeded. "That happened because Neil Armstrong was a team player - he always worked on behalf of the team." On September 14, Armstrong's cremated remains were scattered in the Atlantic Ocean from the USS Philippine Sea. Flags were flown at half-staff on the day of Armstrong's funeral. In July 2019, after observations of the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, The New York Times reported on details of a medical malpractice suit Armstrong's family had filed against Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital, where he died. When Armstrong appeared to be recovering from his bypass surgery, nurses removed the wires connected to his temporary pacemaker. He began to bleed internally and his blood pressure dropped. Doctors took him to the hospital's catheterization laboratory, and only later began operating. Two of the three physicians who reviewed the medical files during the lawsuit called this a serious error, saying surgery should have begun immediately; experts the Times talked to, while qualifying their judgement by noting that they were unable to review the specific records in the case, said that taking a patient directly to the operating room under those circumstances generally gave them the highest chance of survival. The family ultimately settled for 6M USD in 2014. Letters included with the 93 pages of documents sent to the Times by an unknown individual show that his sons intimated to the hospital, through their lawyers, that they might discuss what happened to their father publicly at the 45th anniversary observances in 2014. The hospital, fearing the bad publicity that would result from being accused of negligently causing the death of a revered figure such as Armstrong, agreed to pay as long as the family never spoke about the suit or the settlement. Armstrong's wife, Carol, was not a party to the lawsuit. She reportedly felt that her husband would have been opposed to taking legal action. Neil Armstrong was born Neil Alden Armstrong in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Before becoming an astronaut, Armstrong was an officer in the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War, flying the Grumman F9F Panther from the aircraft carrier USS Essex. After the war, he earned his bachelor' degree at Purdue University and served as a test pilot at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) High-Speed Flight Station, where he logged over 900 flights, including some in the X-15. He was also participant in the X-20 Dyna-Soar human spaceflight program. He joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in 1962. He made his first space flight as command pilot of Gemini 8 in March 1966, becoming NASA' first civilian astronaut to fly in space. He performed the first docking of two spacecraft, with pilot David Scott. Armstrong' second and last spaceflight was as commander of Apollo 11, the first manned Moon landing mission in July 1969. Armstrong and Lunar Module pilot Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface and spent two and a half hours outside the spacecraft, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the Command/Service Module. When Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface, he famously said: "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." Along with Collins and Aldrin, Armstrong was awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom by President Richard Nixon. President Jimmy Carter presented Armstrong the Congressional Space Medal Of Honor in 1978. Armstrong and his former crewmates received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009.

While passing behind Saturn (as viewed from Earth), Voyager 2 probed Saturn's upper atmosphere with its radio link to gather information on atmospheric temperature and density profiles. Voyager 2 found that at the uppermost pressure levels (seven kilopascals of pressure), Saturn's temperature was 70 K (-203.2 C; -333.7 F), while at the deepest levels (120 kilopascals), the temperature increased to 143 K (-130 C; -202 F). The north pole was found to be 10 K (-263.1 C; -441.7 F) cooler, although this may be seasonal. After the fly-by of Saturn, the camera platform of Voyager 2 locked up briefly, putting plans to officially extend the mission to Uranus and Neptune in jeopardy. The mission's engineers were able to fix the problem (caused by an overuse that temporarily depleted its lubricant), and the Voyager 2 probe was given the go-ahead to explore the Uranian system.

August 25, 1909: #BOTD: #HBD! Michael Rennie, British film, television and stage actor (d. June 10, 1971) is #born Eric Alexander Rennie in Idle near Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, the second son of a Scottish wool mill owner, James Rennie, and his English wife Amelia (nee Dobby). He is perhaps best remembered for his starring role as the space visitor Klaatu in the science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), the first postwar, large-budget, "A" science-fiction film, in which Rennie received top billing after Claude Rains turned down the role. It was a serious, high-minded exploration of mid-20th century suspicion and paranoia, combined with a philosophical overview of humanity's coming place in the larger universe. Rennie said director Robert Wise told him to do the role "with dignity but not with superiority". The story was later dramatised in 1954 on Lux Radio Theatre, with Rennie and Billy Gray recreating their original film roles. Seven years later, on 3 March 1962, when The Day the Earth Stood Still made its television premiere on NBC's NBC Saturday Night at the Movies, Rennie appeared in a two-minute introductory prologue before the start of the film. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Rennie appeared in more than 50 films, including Secret Agent (1936), Dangerous Moonlight aka Suicide Squadron (1941), Pimpernel" Smith (1941), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel (1951) as Narrator, Les Miserables (1952), Titanic (1953) as End Narrator, The Desert Rats (1953), The Robe (1953), Prince Valiant (1954) as Narrator, Desiree (1954), Omar Khayyam (1957), Battle of the V-1 (1958), The Lost World (1960), The Devil's Brigade (1968), and The Battle Of El Alamein (1969). He also appeared in several American television series, including Route 66 (1961), The Virginian (TV series) (1963), Perry Mason (1963), Lost in Space (1965), Bonanza (1965), Batman (1966) as The Sandman, The Time Tunnel (1966), The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1967), and The Invaders (1967-1968). Michael Rennie died suddenly of an aortic aneurysm at his mother's home in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England, aged 61. After his cremation, his ashes were interred in Harlow Hill Cemetery, Harrogate.

August 25, 1767: #BOTD: Louis Antoine Leon de Saint-Just, military and political leader during the French Revolution (d. July 28, 1794) is #born in Decize in the former Nivernais province of central France. The youngest of the deputies elected to the National Convention in 1792, Saint-Just rose quickly in their ranks and became a major leader of the government of the French First Republic. He spearheaded the movement to execute King Louis XVI and later drafted the radical French Constitution of 1793. He became a close friend of Maximilien Robespierre, and served with him as one of the commissioners of the Committee of Public Safety. Dispatched as a commissar to the army during its rocky start in the French Revolutionary Wars, Saint-Just imposed severe discipline, and he was credited by many for the army's subsequent revival at the front. Back in Paris, he supervised the consolidation of Robespierre's power through a ruthless and bloody program of intimidation. In his relatively brief time on the historical stage, he became the enduring public face of The Reign Of Terror and was dubbed the "Angel of Death" by later writers. Saint-Just organized the arrests and prosecutions of many of the most famous figures of the Revolution. Saint-Just was arrested in the violent episode of 9 Thermidor and executed executed by guillotine in Paris, France the next day along with Robespierre and their allies. In many histories of the Revolution, their deaths at the guillotine mark the end of The Reign Of Terror. He is buried in a mass grave with other executed dissidents in the then newly created Errancis cemetery in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, one of the cemeteries (the others being Madeleine Cemetery, Picpus Cemetery, Chapelle expiatoire and the Cemetery of Saint Margaret) used to dispose of the corpses of guillotine victims during the French Revolution.

During The War Of 1812, Washington D.C. was invaded by British forces that burned the Capitol, the White House and most other public buildings along with a number of private homes. The burning was in retaliation for the earlier American burning of York (Toronto). After defeating the Americans at the Battle of Bladensburg, a British force led by Major General Robert Ross burned down buildings including the White House (known as the Presidential Mansion), and the Capitol, as well as other facilities of the U.S. government. The attack was in part a retaliation for the 14-16 May 1814 American Raid On Port Dover in Upper Canada, and before that, for the 28-30 April 1913 Burning Of York, the destruction the American victorry at The Battle Of York of the Parliament buildings and other public buildings in York, the predecessor to the old city of Toronto (1834-1998) and the provincial capital of Upper Canada. Throughout the history of the United States, the United Kingdom is the only country to have ever captured Washington, D.C.; the Burning of Washington also marks the only time since the American Revolutionary War that a foreign power has captured and occupied the United States capital. President James Madison, military officials, and his government fled the city in the wake of the British victory at the Battle of Bladensburg. They eventually found refuge for the night in Brookeville, a small town in Montgomery County, Maryland, which is known today as the "United States Capital for a Day". President Madison spent the night in the house of Caleb Bentley, a Quaker who lived and worked in Brookeville. Bentley's house, known today as the Madison House, still stands in Brookeville. Less than a day after the attack began, a sudden, very heavy thunderstorm-possibly a hurricane-put out the fires. It also spun off a tornado that passed through the center of the capital, setting down on Constitution Avenue and lifting two cannons before dropping them several yards away, killing British troops and American civilians alike. Following the storm, the British returned to their ships, many of which were badly damaged. The occupation of Washington lasted only about 26 hours. After the "Storm that saved Washington", as it soon came to be called, the Americans returned to the city.

August 25, 1988: Natural Disasters: Natural Disasters In The United States: Fires: Conflagrations: Conflagrations In The United States: Wildfires (Forest Fires, Bushfires, Brushfires, Wildland Fires, Rural Fires): The Yellowstone Fires Of 1988: The North Fork Fire: -- The largest fire in Yellowstone National Park, The North Fork Fire, continues its eastward advance along the Yellowstone Plateau and reaches the visitor facilities at Lewis River Canyon, where land management agencies and the U.S. military put forth enormous efforts to protect structures. The eastern flank of the fire calmed down for several days, then down-sloping winds off the Yellowstone Plateau forced flames along the west side of the fire towards the town of West Yellowstone, Montana. There, private citizens assisted assigned personnel in soaking hundreds of acres of forestland to protect both the town and an electrical power substation. The fire burned a substantial section of forest along the Madison River valley. The Yellowstone Fires Of 1988 collectively formed the largest wildfire in the recorded history of Yellowstone National Park in the United States. Starting as many smaller individual fires, the flames quickly spread out of control due to drought conditions and increasing winds, combining into one large conflagration which burned for several months. The fires almost destroyed two major visitor destinations and, on September 8, 1988, the entire park closed to all non-emergency personnel for the first time in its history. Only the arrival of cool and moist weather in the late autumn brought the fires to an end. A total of 793,880 acres (3,213 km2), or 36 percent of the park, was affected by the wildfires. Thousands of firefighters fought the fires, assisted by dozens of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft which were used for water and fire retardant drops. At the peak of the effort, more than 9,000 firefighters were assigned to the park. With fires raging throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and other areas in the western United States, the staffing levels of the National Park Service and other land management agencies were inadequate for the situation; more than 4,000 U.S. military personnel were soon brought in to assist in wildfire suppression efforts. The firefighting effort cost 120M USD (260M USD in 2020). Losses to structures were minimized by concentrating firefighting efforts near major visitor areas, keeping property damage down to 3M USD (6M USD as of 2020). No firefighters died while fighting the Yellowstone fires, though there were two fire-related deaths outside the park. Before the late 1960s, fires were generally believed to be detrimental for parks and forests, and management policies were aimed at suppressing fires as quickly as possible. However, as the beneficial ecological role of fire became better understood in the decades before 1988, a policy was adopted of allowing natural fires to burn under controlled conditions, which proved highly successful in reducing the area lost annually to wildfires. In contrast, in 1988, Yellowstone was overdue for a large fire, and, in the exceptionally dry summer, many smaller "controlled" fires combined. The fires burned discontinuously, leaping from one patch to another, leaving intervening areas untouched. Intense fires swept through some regions, burning everything in their paths. Tens of millions of trees and countless plants were killed by the wildfires, and some regions were left looking blackened and dead. However, more than half of the affected areas were burned by ground fires, which did less damage to hardier tree species. Not long after the fires ended, plant and tree species quickly reestablished themselves, and native plant regeneration has been highly successful. The Yellowstone Fires Of 1988 were unprecedented in the history of the National Park Service, and led to many questions about existing fire management policies. Media accounts of mismanagement were often sensational and inaccurate, sometimes wrongly reporting or implying that most of the park was being destroyed. While there were temporary declines in air quality during the fires, no adverse long-term health effects have been recorded in the ecosystem and, contrary to initial reports, few large mammals were killed by the fires, though there was a subsequent reduction in the number of moose which has yet to rebound.

August 25, 1939: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Anglo-Polish Military Alliance: -- The United Kingdom and Poland form a military alliance in which the UK promises to defend Poland in case of invasion by a foreign power as a guarantee against Germany's imminent Invasion Of Poland. The alliance committed Britain, for the first time in history, to fight on behalf of a European country other than France or Belgium. On March 31, 1939, in response to Nazi Germany's defiance of the Munich Agreement and occupation of Czechoslovakia, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain pledged during a speech in the House Of Commons the support of the United Kingdom and France to assure Polish independence: "... in the event of any action which clearly threatened Polish independence, and which the Polish Government accordingly considered it vital to resist with their national forces, His Majesty's Government would feel themselves bound at once to lend the Polish Government all support in their power. They have given the Polish Government an assurance to this effect. I may add that the French Government have authorized me to make it plain that they stand in the same position in this matter as do His Majesty's Government. On 6 April, during a visit to London by the Polish foreign minister, it was agreed to formalise the assurance as an Anglo-Polish military alliance, pending negotiations." On 25 August, two days after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the Agreement of Mutual Assistance between the United Kingdom and Poland was signed. The agreement contained promises of mutual military assistance between the nations in the event either was attacked by some "European country". The United Kingdom, sensing a trend of German expansionism, sought to discourage German aggression by this show of solidarity. In a secret protocol of the pact, the United Kingdom offered assistance in the case of an attack on Poland specifically by Germany, while in the case of attack by other countries the parties were required to "consult together on measures to be taken in common". Both the United Kingdom and Poland were bound not to enter agreements with any other third countries which were a threat to the other. Because of the pact's signing, Hitler postponed his planned Invasion Of Poland from 26 August until 1 September. At the time Adolf Hitler was demanding the cession of the Free City of Danzig, an extraterritorial highway (the Reichsautobahn Berlin-Koenigsberg) across the Polish Corridor, and special privileges for the ethnic German minority within Poland. By the terms of the military alliance, each party (i.e. Poland and Britain) was free to decide whether to oppose with force any territorial encroachment, as the pact did not include any statement of either party's commitment to the defence of the other party's territorial integrity.] The Pact did contain provisions regarding "indirect threats" and attempts to undermine either party's independence by means of "economic penetration", a clear reference to the peculiar status of Danzig. Fearing all-out German invasion no matter what, Poland rejected the German demands.

August 24-25, 1942: World War II: The Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Pacific Ocean Theater Of World War II: Operation Cartwheel: The Solomon Islands Campaign: The Battle Of Guadalcanal (The Guadalcanal Campaign, Operation Watchtower): The Battle Of The Eastern Solomons (The Battle Of The Stewart Islands, Japanese: The Second Battle Of The Solomon Sea): -- Japanese Rear Admiral Raizo Tanaka, aboard the Sendai-class light cruiser Jintsu, leads a Japanese naval transport reinforcement convoy of three slow-moving ships carrying 1,411 Japanese soldiers to Guadalcanal; it is turned back by an Allied air attack, when at 08:05, 18 U.S. aircraft from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal attacked Tanaka's convoy, causing heavy damage to Jintsu, killing 24 crewmen, and knocking Tanaka unconscious. The troop transport Kinryu Maru was also hit and eventually sank. Just as the destroyer Mutsuki pulled alongside Kinryu Maru to rescue her crew and embarked troops, she was attacked by four U.S. B-17s from Espiritu Santo which landed five bombs on or around Mutsuki, sinking her immediately. An uninjured but shaken Tanaka transferred to the destroyer Kagero, sent Jintsu back to Truk, and took the convoy to the Japanese base in the Shortland Islands. The naval Battle Of The Eastern Solomons, also known as the Battle of the Stewart Islands and, in Japanese sources, as the Second Battle of the Solomon Sea, was the third carrier battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II and the second major engagement fought between the United States Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Guadalcanal Campaign. As at the Battle Of The Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway, the ships of the two adversaries were never within sight of each other. Instead, all attacks were carried out by carrier-based or land-based aircraft.

August 24-25, 1944: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Western Front Of World War II: The Liberation Of France: Operation Overlord (The Battle Of Normandy, The Normandy Campaign): D-Day (The D-Day Landings, The Normandy Landings): The Liberation Of Paris (French: Liberation De Paris) (The Battle For Paris And Belgium): -- On the evening of August 24, elements of General Philippe Leclerc's 2nd French Armored Division, a mechanized infantry unit composed primarily of exiled Spanish republicans, became the first Allied trops to make its way into Paris, and arrived at the Hotel de Ville, the building housing the city's local administration, shortly before midnight. The next morning, 25 August, the bulk of the 2nd Armored Division and US 4th Infantry Division entered the city. Dietrich von Choltitz, commander of the German garrison and the military governor of Paris, surrendered to the French at the Hotel Meurice, the newly established French headquarters, while General Charles de Gaulle arrived to assume control of the city as head of the Provisional Government of the French Republic. The Liberation of Paris (also known as the Battle for Paris and Belgium; French: Liberation de Paris) began on August 19 when the French Forces of the Interior - the military structure of the French Resistance - staged an uprising against the German garrison upon the approach of the US Third Army, led by General George Patton. On August 25th began the phase in the Western European Campaign of World War II known as The Allied Advance From Paris To The Rhine, a period spanning up to the time of the Allied preparations to cross the Rhine in the early months of 1945.

To expedite cargo shipment to the front, trucks emblazoned with red balls, staffed primarily with African American soldiers, followed a similarly marked route that was closed to civilian traffic. The trucks also had priority on regular roads. It was conceived of in an urgent 36-hour-long meeting, and the system began immediate operation. The Express at its peak operated 5,958 vehicles that carried about 12,500 tons of supplies a day. It ran for 83 days until November 16, when the port facilities at Antwerp, Belgium, were opened, enough French rail lines were repaired, and portable gasoline pipelines were deployed.

August 25, 1984: #DOTD: #RIP: Truman Capote, American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter (b. September 30, 1924) #dies aged 59 at the Bel Air, Los Angeles home of his old friend Joanne Carson, model, stewardess, and television host, who was married to late-night TV host Johnny Carson from 1963 to 1972, on whose program Capote frequently guested, of liver disease complicated by phlebitis and multiple drug intoxication. Gore Vidal responded to news of Capote's death by calling it "a wise career move". Capote remains were cremated and his ashes were reportedly divided between Carson and his partner Jack Dunphy (although Dunphy maintained that he received all the ashes). Carson said she kept the ashes in an urn in the room where he died. The ashes were reported stolen during a Halloween party in 1988 along with 200K USD in jewels, but were then returned six days later, having been found in a coiled-up garden hose on the back steps of Carson's Bel Air home. The ashes were reportedly stolen again when taken to a production of Tru, but the thief was caught before leaving the theatre. Carson bought a crypt at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, and his name is on a plaque on its facing. Dunphy died in 1992, and in 1994, both his and Capote's ashes were reportedly scattered at Crooked Pond, between Bridgehampton, New York, and Sag Harbor, New York on Long Island, close to Sagaponack, New York, where the two had maintained a property with individual houses for many years. Crooked Pond was chosen because money from the estate of Dunphy and Capote was donated to the Nature Conservancy, which in turn used it to buy 20 acres around Crooked Pond in an area called "Long Pond Greenbelt". A stone marker indicates the spot where their mingled ashes were thrown into the pond. In 2016, some of Capote's ashes previously owned by Joanne Carson were auctioned by Julien's Auctions. Truman Capote was born Truman Streckfus Persons in New Orleans, Louisiana. Several of Truman Garcia Capote's short stories, novels, and plays have been praised as literary classics, including the novella Breakfast At Tiffany's (1958) and the true crime novel In Cold Blood (1966), which he labeled a "non-fiction novel". His works have been adapted into more than 20 films and television dramas. Capote rose above a childhood troubled by divorce, a long absence from his mother, and multiple migrations. He had discovered his calling as a writer by the time he was eight years old, and he honed his writing ability throughout his childhood. He began his professional career writing short stories. The critical success of "Miriam" (1945) attracted the attention of Random House publisher Bennett Cerf and resulted in a contract to write the novel Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948). Capote earned the most fame with In Cold Blood (1966), a journalistic work about the murder of a Kansas farm family in their home. Capote spent six years writing the book, aided by his lifelong friend Harper Lee, who wrote To Kill a Mockingbird (1960).

There the union chose a motto to sum up their resentment over their working conditions: "Fight Or Be Slaves". A. Philip Randolph was elected to server as its long-time president, who was not employed by Pullman and thus beyond retaliation, and who would go on to be a great civil rights leader. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters would become one of the most successful union organizing efforts in history. The union gave voice to the many railroad porters and attendants who were forced to work long hourse for relatively meager wages and benefits. By 1959, the union claimed more than 15,000 members. The Brotherhood Of Sleeping Car Porters is largely resonsible for sparking the modern American Civil Rights Movement, as The Montgomery Bus Boycott Of 1955-1956, the foundational event of the modern American Civil Rights Movement, was largely organized by them, as Rosa Parks, whose arrest for her refusal to surrender her bus seat to a white person, was a secretary for the union, and her immediate union boss, E. D. Nixon, selected her to be the person to make stage this refusal, due to her possessing the impeccable character and background necessary to make her launching of the boycott a success.

August 25, 1912: #BOTD: Erich Honecker, German communist politician who led the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from 1971 until shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall in October 1989 (d. May 29, 1994) is #born Erich Ernst Paul Honecker in what is now Saarland, Germany. He held the posts of General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and Chairman of the National Defence Council; in 1976, he replaced Willi Stoph as Chairman of the State Council, the official head of state. As the leader of East Germany, Honecker had close ties to the Soviet Union, which maintained a large army in the country. Honecker's political career began in the 1930s when he became an official of the Communist Party of Germany, a position for which he was imprisoned by the Nazis. Following World War II, he was freed by the Soviet army and relaunched his political activities, founding the SED's youth organisation, the Free German Youth, in 1946 and serving as the group's chairman until 1955. As the Security Secretary of the SED Central Committee, he was the prime organiser of the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961 and, in this function, bore administrative responsibility for the "order to fire" along the Wall and the larger inner German border. In 1970, Honecker initiated a political power struggle that led, with support of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, to him replacing Walter Ulbricht as General Secretary of the SED and chairman of the National Defence Council. Under his command, the country adopted a programme of "consumer socialism" and moved towards the international community by normalizing relations with West Germany and also becoming a full member of the UN, in what is considered one of his greatest political successes. As Cold War tensions eased in the late 1980s with the advent of perestroika and glasnost - the liberal reforms introduced by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev - Honecker refused all but cosmetic changes to the East German political system. He cited the continual hardliner attitudes of Kim Il-Sung and Fidel Castro, whose respective regimes of North Korea and Cuba had been critical of reforms. As anti-government protests grew, Honecker begged Gorbachev to intervene with the Soviet army to suppress the protests to maintain communist rule in East Germany as Moscow had done with Czechoslovakia in the Prague Spring of 1968 and with the Hungarian Revolution Of 1956, but Gorbachev refused. Honecker was forced to resign by the SED Politburo in October 1989 in a bid to improve the government's image in the eyes of the public; the effort was unsuccessful, and the regime would collapse entirely the following month. Following German Reunification in 1990, Honecker sought asylum in the Chilean embassy in Moscow, but was extradited back to Germany in 1992, after the fall of the Soviet Union, to stand trial for his role in the human rights abuses committed by the East German government. However, the proceedings were abandoned, as Honecker was suffering from terminal liver cancer. He was freed from custody to join his family in exile in Chile, where he died in exile in Santiago of terminal liver cancer, aged 81. His remains were cremated, and the final disposition of his ashes are not publicly known.

August 25, 1845: #BOTD: #HBD! Ludwig II of Bavaria, King of Bavaria from 1864 until his death in 1886, who also held the titles of Count Palatine of the Rhine, Duke of Bavaria, Duke of Franconia, and Duke in Swabia, sometimes called the Swan King, Mad King Ludwig or der Marchenkoenig ("the Fairy Tale King") (d. June 13, 1886) is #born Ludwig Otto Friedrich Wilhelm Wittelsbach in Nymphenburg Palace, Munich, Bavaria, German Confederation. He succeeded to the throne aged 18. Two years later Bavaria and Austria fought a war against Prussia, which they lost. However, in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 Bavaria sided with Prussia against France, and after the Prussian victory it became part of the new German Empire led by Prussia. Though Bavaria retained a degree of autonomy on some matters within the new German Reich, Ludwig increasingly withdrew from day-to-day affairs of state in favour of extravagant artistic and architectural projects. He commissioned the construction of two lavish palaces and Neuschwanstein Castle, and he was a devoted patron of the composer Richard Wagner. Ludwig spent all his royal revenues (although not state funds) on these projects, borrowed extensively, and defied all attempts by his ministers to restrain him. This extravagance was used against him to declare him insane, an accusation which has since come under scrutiny. Today, his architectural and artistic legacy includes many of Bavaria's most important tourist attractions. Ludwig II died aged 40 in Lake Starnberg, Bavaria, German Empire under mysterious circumstances. That afternoon, Gudden accompanied by the chief of the Munich Asylum Bernhard von Gudden, went on a stroll in the grounds of Berg Castle. They were escorted by two attendants. On their return, Gudden expressed optimism to other doctors concerning the treatment of his royal patient. Following dinner, at around 6 pm, Ludwig asked Gudden to accompany him on a further walk, this time through the Schloss Berg parkland along the shore of Lake Starnberg. Gudden agreed; the walk may even have been his suggestion, and he told the aides not to join them. His words were ambiguous (Es darf kein Pfleger mitgehen, "No attendant may walk with [us]"). Whether they were meant to follow at a discreet distance is not clear. The two men were last seen at about 6:30 pm; they were due back at 8 pm but never returned. After searches were made for more than two hours by the entire castle staff in a gale with heavy rain, at 10:30 pm that night, the bodies of both Ludwig and Gudden were found, head and shoulders above the shallow water near the shore. Ludwig's watch had stopped at 6:54. Gendarmes patrolling the park had neither seen nor heard anything unusual. Ludwig's death was officially ruled a suicide by drowning, despite the fact that the official autopsy report indicated that no water was found in his lungs. Ludwig was a very strong swimmer in his youth, the water was approximately waist deep where his body was found, and he had not expressed suicidal feelings during the crisis. Gudden's body showed blows to the head and neck and signs of strangulation, leading to the suspicion that he was strangled, although no other evidence was found to prove this. Another theory suggests that Ludwig died of natural causes, such as a heart attack or stroke, brought on by the cool water (12 _C) of the lake during an escape attempt. Speculation exists that Ludwig was murdered by his enemies while attempting to escape from Berg. One account suggests that Ludwig was shot. His personal fisherman, Jakob Lidl (1864-1933), stated, "Three years after the king's death I was made to swear an oath that I would never say certain things - not to my wife, not on my deathbed, and not to any priest _ The state has undertaken to look after my family if anything should happen to me in either peacetime or war." Lidl kept his oath, at least orally, but left behind notes that were found after his death. According to Lidl, he had hidden behind bushes with his boat, waiting to meet Ludwig, to row him out into the lake, where loyalists were waiting to help him escape. Lidl wrote, "As the king stepped up to his boat and put one foot in it, a shot rang out from the bank, apparently killing him on the spot, for the king fell across the bow of the boat." The autopsy report indicates no scars or wounds were found on the body of the dead king. Many years later, Countess Josephine von Wrbna-Kaunitz would show her afternoon tea guests a grey Loden coat with two bullet holes in the back, asserting it was the one Ludwig was wearing. Ludwig's remains were dressed in the regalia of the Order of Saint Hubert, and lay in state in the royal chapel at the Munich Residenz. In his right hand, he held a posy of white jasmine picked for him by his cousin the Empress Elisabeth of Austria. After an elaborate funeral on June 19 1886, Ludwig's remains were interred in the crypt of St. Michael's Church, Munich. His heart does not lie with the rest of his body. Bavarian tradition called for the heart of the king to be placed in a silver urn and sent to Shrine of Our Lady of Altotting, where it was placed beside those of his father and grandfather. Three years after his death, a small memorial chapel was built overlooking the site and a cross was erected in the lake. A remembrance ceremony is held in Altotting each year on June 13. Ludwig was succeeded by his brother Otto. Since Otto was considered incapacitated by mental illness due to a diagnosis by Gudden and had been under medical supervision since 1883; the king's uncle Luitpold remained regent. Luitpold maintained the regency until his own death in 1912 at the age of 91. He was succeeded as regent by his eldest son, also named Ludwig. The regency lasted for 13 more months until November 1913, when Regent Ludwig deposed the still-living but still-institutionalized King Otto, and declared himself King Ludwig III of Bavaria. His reign lasted until the end of World War I, when monarchy in all of Germany came to an end. Ludwig II is buried at Saint Michael's Church in Altstadt, Stadtkreis Munchen,

August 25, 1530: #BOTD: Ivan IV Vasilyevich, Russian ruler commonly known as Ivan The Terrible or Ivan The Fearsome (a better translation into modern English would be Ivan The Formidable), Grand Prince of Moscow, Sovereign Of All Russia from 1533, the first crowned Tsar of all Russia, "Tsar Of All The Russias" from 1547 until his death in 1584, a title was used by all his successors. (d. March 28, 1584) is #born Ivan Vasilyevich Rurik of the Russian royal house of The Riurikids, also known as The Volodimerovichi, founded by the semi-legendary Varangian chieftain of the Rus' known as Prince Rurik, who according to tradition established himself in Novgorod around the year AD 862. During his reign, Russia conquered the Khanates of Kazan, Astrakhan and Sibir. He exercised autocratic control over Russia' hereditary nobility and developed a bureaucracy to administer the new territories. He transformed Russia from a medieval state into an empire, though at immense cost to its people, and its broader, long-term economy. Historic sources present disparate accounts of Ivan' complex personality: he was described as intelligent and devout, yet given to rages and prone to episodic outbreaks of mental instability. In one such outburst, he killed his son and heir Ivan Ivanovich. Ivan was an able diplomat, a patron of arts and trade, and founder of the Moscow Print Yard, Russia' first publishing house. He was popular among Russia' commoners and he is noted for his paranoia and harsh treatment of the Russian nobility. He died in Moscow of a stroke while playing chess with Bogdan Belsky, aged 53. He is buried at The Cathedral Of The Archangel in Moscow, Russia.

August 25, 1967: #DOTD: George Lincoln Rockwell, American sailor and politician, neo-Nazi activist who founded the American Nazi Party (The National Socialist White Peoples Party [NSWPP]) in 1959 and became the self-styled leader of neo-Nazism in the United States and beliefs, strategies, and writings have continued to influence many white supremacists and neo-Nazis (b. March 9, 1918) #dies by assassination when he was shot and killed only a few yards from where he lived in Arlington, Virginia by John Patler, a former party member who had just been expelled by Rockwell for "Bolshevik leanings" evinced by his attempts to inject Marxist ideas into party publications. Patler was convicted of the murder in December 1967, and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Patler spent eight years in prison before being paroled. After a parole violation, he spent another six years in prison. Matthias Koehl, the second in command at NSWPP, moved to establish control over Rockwell's body and the assets of the NSWPP, which at the time had some 300 active members and 3,000 financial supporters. Rockwell's parents wanted a private burial in Maine, but declined to fight with the Nazis. On August 27, an NSWPP spokesman reported that federal officials had approved a military burial at Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper, Virginia, Rockwell being an honorably discharged veteran. The cemetery specified that no Nazi insignia could be displayed, and when the 50 mourners violated these conditions, the entrance to the cemetery was blocked in a five-hour standoff, during which the hearse, which had been stopped on railroad tracks near the cemetery, was nearly struck by an approaching train. The next day, Rockwell's body was secretly cremated, and his ashes are retained in a rectangular miniature monument-like stone receptacle held by the NSWPP. George Lincoln Rockwell was born in Bloomington, Illinois, the first of three children of vaudeville comedians and actors George Lovejoy Rockwell and Claire (Schade) Rockwell. His father was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and was of English and Scottish ancestry. His mother was the daughter of Augustus Schade, a German immigrant, and Corrine Boudreau, who was of Acadian French ancestry. Both parents were. His parents divorced when Rockwell was six years old, and for the rest of his youth he divided his time between his mother in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and his father in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Rockwell briefly studied philosophy at Brown University before dropping out to join the Navy. He trained as a pilot and served in World War II and the Korean War in non-combat roles, achieving the rank of Commander. Rockwell's politics grew more radical and vocal in the 1950s, and he was honorably discharged due to his views in 1960. In politics, he regularly praised Adolf Hitler, referring to him as the "White Savior of the twentieth century". He denied the Holocaust and believed that Martin Luther King Jr. was a tool for Jewish communists desiring to rule the white community. He blamed the civil rights movement on Jews, and viewed most of them as traitors. He viewed black people as a primitive, lethargic race who desired only simple pleasures and a life of irresponsibility, and supported the resettlement of all African Americans in a new African state to be funded by the U.S. government. As a supporter of racial segregation and white separatism, he agreed with and quoted many leaders of the Black separatism movement such as Elijah Muhammad and early Malcolm X. In his later years, Rockwell became increasingly aligned with other neo-Nazi groups, leading the World Union of National Socialists.

August 25, 1920: The Aftermath Of World War I: 20th Century Revolutions: The Revolutions Of 1917-1923: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Russian Revolution: The Russian Civil War: The Western Front Of The Russian Civil War (Western Front (RSFSR)): The Ukrainian War Of Independence (The Ukrainian-Soviet War): The Lithuanian Wars Of Independence, The Freedom Struggles): The Latvian War Of Independence (Latvia's Freedom Battles, The Latvian War Of Liberation): The Polish-Soviet War: The Battle Of Warsaw (1920) (Polish: Bitwa Warszawska; Russian: Varshavskaya Bitva) (The Miracle On The Vistula (Polish: Cud Nad Wisla): -- The Battle Of Warsaw, which began on August 12 with the Polish army, led by Jozef Pilsudski, on the verge of defeat, ends with the Red Army, led by Mikhail Tukhachevsky, being decisively defeated. The Battle Of Warsaw was fought as Red Army forces commanded by Mikhail Tukhachevsky approached the Polish capital of Warsaw and the nearby Modlin Fortress. On August 16, Polish forces commanded by Jozef Pilsudski counterattacked from the south, disrupting the enemy's offensive, forcing the Russian forces into a disorganized withdrawal eastward and behind the Neman River. Estimated Russian losses were 10,000 killed, 500 missing, 30,000 wounded, and 66,000 taken prisoner, compared with Polish losses of some 4,500 killed, 10,000 missing, and 22,000 wounded. The defeat crippled the Red Army; Vladimir Lenin, the Bolshevik leader, called it "an enormous defeat" for his forces. In the following months, several more Polish follow-up victories secured Poland's independence and led to a peace treaty with Soviet Russia and Soviet Ukraine later that year, securing the Polish state's eastern frontiers until 1939. The politician and diplomat Edgar Vincent regards this event as one of the most important battles in history on his expanded list of most decisive battles, since the Polish victory over the Soviets halted the spread of communism further westwards into Europe. A Soviet victory, which would have led to the creation of a pro-Soviet Communist Poland, would have put the Soviets directly on the eastern border of Germany, where considerable revolutionary ferment was present at the time.

August 25, 1967: #DOTD: Paul Muni, Ukrainian Jewish American stage and film actor from Chicago, who began his acting career in the Yiddish theater, considered one of the most prestigious actors at the Warner Bros. studio during the 1930s, and who was given the rare privilege of choosing his own parts (b. September 22, 1895) #dies of a heart disorder in Montecito, California in 1967 at the age of 71. He is interred at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood. Paul Muni was born Frederich Meshilem Meier Weisenfreund in Lemberg, Galicia, then Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Lviv, Ukraine) to Salli (born Khaya Tsilke Fishler) and Phillip Weisenfreund. He learned Yiddish as his first language. When he was seven, he emigrated with his family to the United States in 1902; they settled in Chicago. Muni often played powerful characters, such as the lead role in Scarface (1932), and was known for his intense preparation for his parts, often immersing himself in the study of the real characters' traits and mannerisms. He was also highly skilled in makeup techniques, a talent that he had learned from his parents, who were also actors, and from his early years on stage with the Yiddish theater in Chicago. At the age of 12, he played the stage role of an 80-year-old man, and in the film Seven Faces, he played seven characters. Muni appeared in 22 films and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor five times, winning the award for his role in the 1936 film The Story of Louis Pasteur. He also starred in numerous Broadway plays and won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his role in the 1955 production of Inherit the Wind.

August 25, 1931: #BOTD: #HBD! Hal Fishman, television news anchor and journalist (d. August 7, 2007) is #born Harold Fishman in Brooklyn, New York City. Hal Fishman was a local news anchor in the Los Angeles area, serving on-air with Los Angeles-area television stations continuously from 1960 until his death in 2007. Fishman was the longest-running news anchor in the history of American television before Dave Ward surpassed him in 2015. He was also a record-holding aviator. "The Simpsons" cartoon television anchorman Kent Brockman was partially inspired by Hal Fishman. A Brooklyn, New York native, Fishman received a bachelor's degree from Cornell University where he worked at the campus radio station. He also received a master's degree in political science from UCLA in 1956. Planning for a career in academia, he served as an assistant professor of political science at California State University, Los Angeles for two years. Eventually, Los Angeles independent television station KCOP approached Fishman to teach an on-air course, and later, the station invited him to anchor his own segment. Fishman had been on the air continuously since June 20, 1960, moving from KCOP to KTLA in 1965. That year, he received significant exposure as a field reporter for KTLA when he helped cover the Watts Riots live from the Los Angeles Police Department command center. Fishman also worked at KTTV and KHJ-TV (now KCAL-TV) during the early 1970s, returning to KTLA on January 8, 1975, to anchor their evening new broadcast NewsWatch, later renamed News at Ten. As a news anchor, Fishman covered numerous events in Los Angeles and the world, ranging from the assassination of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, to the Sylmar and Northridge earthquakes, to Pope John Paul II's 1987 visit to southern California. He, along with KTLA, was credited for being the first to air footage of the police beating of Rodney King in 1991, an event that sparked riots a year later when the officers were acquitted. In 2000, KTLA dedicated its newsroom in Fishman's honor, commemorating his 40 years in television and his years of service and commitment to the region. Fishman won myriad awards, including the Associated Press Television-Radio Association's first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award. He received a "star" on the Hollywood "Walk of Fame," at 1560 Vine Street and KTLA named its television news studio after Fishman. He also authored two novels, Flight 902 Is Down (co-authored with aviation writer Barry J. Schiff) and The Vatican Target. Fishman was also an accomplished pilot and set 13 records for speed and altitude. In 1969, he was awarded the Louis Bleriot medal by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale. Hal Fishman's last broadcast was on July 30, 2007, eight days before his death. On July 31, 2007, the night before Fishman became ill and after his last broadcast, KTLA celebrated his 47 years in television with a special gala at the Autry National Museum in Los Angeles. The event was emceed by Morning Show anchor Michaela Pereira and attended by such dignitaries as Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Los Angeles County sheriff Lee Baca. During the gala, Fishman spoke to the audience about his time in television. He appeared somewhat fatigued but little would be known about his condition until the day after. Fishman died at home, 18 days before he would have turned 76, following recent treatment for a liver infection, which had detected cancer in his liver and colon. That morning, the station interrupted its regular news schedule and dedicated much of the Morning Show and Prime News broadcasts to Fishman. The reporters on Prime News did not break for commercials that evening. His remains were cremated, and the ashes scattered over the skies of Los Angeles, California.

August 25, 2018: #DOTD: #RIP: John McCain, American politician and United States Navy officer who served as a United States senator from Arizona from 1987 until his death in 2018 (b. August 29, 1936) #dies of brain cancer in Cornville, Arizona, aged 81. Following his death, McCain lay in state in the Arizona State Capitol rotunda and then in the United States Capitol rotunda. His funeral was televised from the Washington National Cathedral, with the former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama giving eulogies. He previously served two terms in the United States House Of Representatives and was the Republican nominee for president of the United States in the 2008 election, which he lost to Barack Obama. He is buried at The United States Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland. John McCain was born John Sidney McCain III at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone, to naval officer John S. McCain Jr. and Roberta (Wright) McCain. McCain graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1958 and received a commission in the United States Navy. He became a naval aviator and flew ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, McCain almost died in the 1967 USS Forrestal fire. While on a bombing mission during Operation Rolling Thunder over Hanoi in October 1967, he was shot down, seriously injured, and captured by the North Vietnamese. McCain was a prisoner of war until 1973. He experienced episodes of torture and refused an out-of-sequence early release. During the war, McCain sustained wounds that left him with lifelong physical disabilities. He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1981 and moved to Arizona. In 1982, McCain was elected to the United States House Of Representatives, where he served two terms. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986, succeeding the 1964 Republican presidential nominee and conservative icon Barry Goldwater upon his retirement. McCain easily won reelection five times. While generally adhering to conservative principles, McCain also gained a reputation as a "maverick" for his willingness to break from his party on certain issues, including LGBT rights, gun regulations, and campaign finance reform where his stances were more moderate than those of the party's base. McCain was investigated and largely exonerated in a political influence scandal of the 1980s as one of the Keating Five; he then made regulating the financing of political campaigns one of his signature concerns, which eventually resulted in passage of the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002. He was also known for his work in the 1990s to restore diplomatic relations with Vietnam. McCain chaired the Senate Commerce Committee from 1997 to 2001 and 2003 to 2005, where he opposed pork barrel spending and earmarks. He belonged to the bipartisan "Gang of 14", which played a key role in alleviating a crisis over judicial nominations. McCain entered the race for the Republican nomination for president in 2000 but lost a heated primary season contest to Governor George W. Bush of Texas. He secured the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, beating fellow candidates Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, though he lost the general election to Barack Obama. McCain subsequently adopted more orthodox conservative stances and attitudes and largely opposed actions of the Obama administration, especially with regard to foreign policy matters. In 2015, he became Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. He refused to support then-Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in 2016; McCain won re-election to a sixth and final term that same year. McCain was a vocal critic of the Trump administration. While McCain opposed the Obama-era Affordable Care Act (ACA), he cast the deciding vote against the ACA-repealing American Health Care Act of 2017. After being diagnosed with brain cancer in 2017, he reduced his role in the Senate in order to focus on treatment. In 2022, President Joe Biden awarded him the Presidential Medal Of Freedom posthumously.

August 25, 1919: #BOTD: George Wallace, American sergeant, lawyer, and politician, 45th Governor of Alabama (d. September 13, 1998) is #born George Corley Wallace Jr. in Clio, Alabama. He was a U.S. Presidential candidate for four consecutive elections. He remains the last third-party candidate to receive pledged electoral college votes from any state. Wallace is remembered for his Southern neo-dixiecrat and pro-segregation "Jim Crow" positions during the mid-20th century period of the Civil Rights Movement, declaring in his 1963 Inaugural Address that he stood for "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever," and standing in front of the entrance of the University of Alabama in an attempt to stop the enrollment of black students. He eventually renounced segregationism but remained a social conservative. Wallace survived an assassination attempt in Laurel, Maryland in 1972, perpetrated by Arthur Bremer, but remained wheelchair-bound until his death of septic shock from a bacterial infection in Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama, aged 79; he had respiratory problems in addition to complications from his gunshot spinal injury. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Montgomery, Alabama.

August 25, 2009: #DOTD: #RIP: Ted Kennedy, American soldier, lawyer, and politician (b. February 22, 1932) #dies of a malignant brain tumor aged 77 at his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, and is buried near his brothers John and Robert at Arlington National Cemetery. Ted Kennedy was born Edward Moore Kennedy at St. Margaret's Hospital in the Dorchester section of Boston, Massachusetts, the last of the nine children of Joseph Patrick Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald, members of prominent Irish American families in Boston who constituted one of the wealthiest families in the nation once they were joined. Ted Kennedy served as a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts for almost 47 years, from 1962 until his death in 2009. A member of the Democratic Party and the Kennedy political family, he was the second most senior member of the Senate when he died and is the fourth-longest-continuously-serving senator in United States history. Kennedy was the younger brother of President John F. Kennedy and U.S. Attorney General and U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and was the father of Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy. After attending Harvard University and receiving his law degree from the University of Virginia, he began his career as an assistant district attorney in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Kennedy was 30 years old when he first entered the Senate following a November 1962 special election in Massachusetts to fill the vacant seat previously held by his brother John, who had taken office as the president. He was elected to a full six-year term in 1964 and was later re-elected seven more times. The Chappaquiddick Incident in 1969 resulted in the death of his automobile passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. He pleaded guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident and later received a two-month suspended sentence. The incident and its aftermath hindered his chances of ever becoming president. His only attempt, in the 1980 election, resulted in a Democratic primary campaign loss to the incumbent president, Jimmy Carter. Kennedy was known for his oratorical skills. His 1968 eulogy for his brother Robert and his 1980 rallying cry for modern American liberalism were among his best-known speeches. He became recognized as "The Lion of the Senate" through his long tenure and influence. Kennedy and his staff wrote more than 300 bills that were enacted into law. Unabashedly liberal, Kennedy championed an interventionist government that emphasized economic and social justice, but he was also known for working with Republicans to find compromises. Kennedy played a major role in passing many laws, including the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, the National Cancer Act of 1971, the COBRA health insurance provision, the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Ryan White AIDS Care Act, the Civil Rights Act Of 1991, the Mental Health Parity Act, the S-CHIP children's health program, the No Child Left Behind Act, and the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. During the 2000s, he led several unsuccessful immigration reform efforts. Over the course of his Senate career, Kennedy made efforts to enact universal health care, which he called the "cause of my life." By the later years of his life, Kennedy had come to be viewed as a major figure and spokesman for American progressivism.

August 25, 1976: #DOTD: #RIP: Lewis H. Michaux, African American bookseller and civil rights activist based in Harlem, New York City, owner from 1932 and 1974 of the African National Memorial Bookstore in Harlem, New York City, one of the most prominent African American bookstores in the country (b. August 4, 1885) #dies of cancer at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York. He is buried at Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye, New York. He was reportedly 92 at the time of his death; although his birth year and day is uncertain (his tombstone reads "AUG. 3, 1883", likely due to its numerology being 8/3/1883), according to The New York Times he was born August 4, 1885. Born in Newport News, Virginia he worked, before coming to New York, as a pea picker, window washer and deacon in the Philadelphia church of his brother, Lightfoot Solomon Michaux, a broadcast evangelist who acted as an advisor for U.S. President Harry S. Truman and helped to build a 500+ unit housing development for the poor. Lewis Michaux had little formal education. He was married to Bettie Kennedy Logan and they had one son. He founded the African National Memorial Bookstore on 7th Avenue and stayed there until 1968, when Michaux was forced to move the store to West 125th Street (on the corner of 7th street) to give space to the State Harlem office building. The bookstore finally closed in 1974 after another row with authorities over its location. Michaux stimulated a generation of students, intellectuals, writers and artists. He called his bookstore "House Of Common Sense And The Home Of Proper Propaganda". The store became an important reading room of the Civil Rights Movement. While Izzy Young's Folk Center further south in Greenwich Village became a hang-out during the folk revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s, including the rising Bob Dylan, the Memorial Bookstore up in Harlem was a rare place for black people and scholars and anyone interested in literature by, or about, African Americans, Africans, Caribbeans and South Americans. Michaux's bookstore had over 200,000 texts and was the nation's largest on its subject. Everyone, white and black, was encouraged to begin home libraries and those who were short of money were allowed to sit down and read. Michaux was active in the Black nationalism movement from the 1930s to the 1960s and supported Marcus Garvey's Pan-Africanism. Harlem had been the headquarters of Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League of the world - the largest mass black movement of the times. Alagba (Elder) Michaux was a personal friend of Malcolm X and a member of the Organization of Afro-American Unity that was formed in 1964. When it came to religion, Michaux had a sign in the store reading "Christ Is Black", but he also departed from his brother Lightfoot Solomon's affiliations with Christianity, saying: "The only lord I know, is the landlord."

August 25, 1900: #DOTD: #RIP: Friedrich Nietzsche, German philologist, philosopher, cultural critic, poet, philologist, and Latin and Greek scholar whose work has exerted a profound influence on Western philosophy and modern intellectual history (b. October 15, 1844) #dies of a stroke at about noon aged 55 in Weimar, Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, German Empire. His sister Elisabeth Forster-Nietzsche had him buried beside his father at the church in Rocken near Lutzen in the Burgenlandkreis district of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. At age 44, he suffered a collapse and a complete loss of his mental faculties. He lived his remaining years in the care of his mother until her death in 1897, and then with his sister Elisabeth. After his death, Elisabeth Forster-Nietzsche became the curator and editor of her brother's manuscripts, reworking Nietzsche' unpublished writings to fit her own German nationalist ideology while often contradicting or obfuscating his stated opinions, which were explicitly opposed to antisemitism and nationalism. Thereby, through her published editions, Nietzsche's work became associated with doctrines he would have detested: fascism and Nazism.

August 25, 1918: #BOTD: #HBD! Leonard Bernstein, American composer, conductor, pianist, music educator, author, and lifelong humanitarian (d. October 14, 1990) is #born into a Jewish family in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He was one of the most significant American cultural personalities of the 20th century. According to music critic Donal Henahan, he was "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history". On November 14, 1943, having recently been appointed assistant conductor to Artur Rodzinski of the New York Philharmonic, Bernstein made his major conducting debut at short notice - and without any rehearsal - after guest conductor Bruno Walter came down with the flu. The program included works by Schumann, Miklos Rozsa, Wagner and Richard Strauss's Don Quixote with cello soloist Joseph Schuster. The next day, The New York Times carried the story on its front page and remarked in an editorial, "It's a good American success story. The warm, friendly triumph of it filled Carnegie Hall and spread far over the air waves." He became instantly famous because the concert was nationally broadcast on CBS Radio and began appearing as a guest conductor with many orchestras in the United States and Canada. As a composer he wrote in many styles, including symphonic and orchestral music, ballet, film and theatre music, choral works, opera, chamber music and works for the piano. His best-known work is the Broadway musical West Side Story, which continues to be regularly performed worldwide, and was made into an Academy Award-winning feature film. His works include three symphonies, Chichester Psalms, Serenade after Plato's "Symposium", the original score for the film On the Waterfront, and theater works including On the Town, Wonderful Town, Candide, and his MASS. Bernstein was the first American-born conductor to lead an American orchestra. He was music director of the New York Philharmonic and conducted the world's major orchestras, generating a significant legacy of audio and video recordings. He was also a critical figure in the modern revival of the music of Gustav Mahler, a composer in whose music he was most passionately interested. A skilled pianist, he often conducted piano concertos from the keyboard. Bernstein was the first conductor to share and explore music on television with a mass audience. Through dozens of national and international broadcasts, including the Emmy Award-winning Young People's Concerts with the New York Philharmonic, he made even the most rigorous elements of classical music an adventure in which everyone could join. Through his educational efforts, including several books and the creation of two major international music festivals, he influenced several generations of young musicians. A lifelong humanitarian, Bernstein worked in support of Civil Rights; protested the Vietnam War; advocated for nuclear disarmament; raised money for HIV/AIDS research and awareness; and engaged in multiple international initiatives for human rights and world peace. Near the end of his life, he conducted a historic performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in Berlin to celebrate the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The concert was televised live, worldwide, on Christmas Day, 1989. Bernstein announced his retirement from conducting on October 9, 1990. He died five days later at the age of 72, in his New York apartment at The Dakota, of a heart attack brought on by mesothelioma. A longtime heavy smoker, Bernstein had emphysema from his mid-50s. On the day of his funeral procession through the streets of Manhattan, construction workers removed their hats and waved, calling out "Goodbye, Lenny". Bernstein is buried near the summit of Battle Hill at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York, next to his wife and with a copy of the score of Mahler's Fifth Symphony lying across his heart. Bernstein was the recipient of many honors, including eleven Emmy Awards, one Tony Award, seventeen Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement, and the Kennedy Center Honor.

August 25, 1954: #BOTD: #HBD! Elvis Costello, English singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer is #born Declan Patrick MacManus, the son of Lilian Alda (nee Ablett, b. 1927, Liverpool) and Ross MacManus (born in Birkenhead, Cheshire; 1927-2011), a singer noted for his beautiful voice, and jazz trumpeter with the Joe Loss Orchestra, who as a solo cabaret act had a hit in Australia (as Day Costello) with his cover version of The Beatles "The Long and Winding Road" in 1970. Elvis Costello OBE has won multiple awards in his career, including Grammy Awards in 1999 and 2020, and has twice been nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male Artist. In 2003, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Costello number 80 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Costello began his career as part of London's pub rock scene in the early 1970s and later became associated with the first wave of the British punk and new wave movement that emerged in the mid-to-late 1970s. His critically acclaimed debut album My Aim Is True was released in 1977. Shortly after recording it, he formed the Attractions as his backing band. His second album This Year's Model was released in 1978, and was ranked number 11 by Rolling Stone on its list of the best albums from 1967 to 1987. His third album Armed Forces was released in 1979, and features his highest-charting single, "Oliver's Army" (number 2 in the UK). His biggest single in the U.S., the Top 20 hit "Veronica", was one of several songs Costello co-wrote with Paul McCartney. His first three albums all appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Costello and the Attractions toured and recorded together for the better part of a decade, though differences between them caused a split by 1986. Much of Costello's work since has been as a solo artist, though reunions with members of the Attractions have been credited to the group over the years. Costello's lyrics employ a wide vocabulary and frequent wordplay. His music has drawn on many diverse genres; one critic described him as a "pop encyclopaedia", able to "reinvent the past in his own image". Costello has co-written several original songs for motion pictures, including "God Give Me Strength" from Grace of My Heart (1996, with Burt Bacharach) and "The Scarlet Tide" from Cold Mountain (2003, with T-Bone Burnett). For the latter, Elvis was nominated (along with Burnett) for the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

August 25, 1688: #DOTD: #RIP: Sir Henry Morgan (Welsh: Harri Morgan), Welsh privateer, plantation owner, and, later, Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica (b. c. 1635) #dies at Lawrencefield Estate, located in modern Port Maria, Jamaica. Christopher Monck, 2nd Duke of Albemarle, who replaced Morgan as Lt. Governor of Jamaica, ordered a state funeral, and laid Morgan's body at King's House for the public to pay respects. An amnesty was declared so that pirates and privateers could pay their respects without fear of arrest. He was buried at Palisadoes cemetery, Port Royal, followed by a 22-gun salute from the ships moored in the harbour. Morgan was a wealthy man when he died. His personal wealth was valued at 5,263 Pounds Sterling. Henry Morgan's life was romanticised after his death and he became the inspiration for pirate-themed works of fiction across a range of genres. From his base in Port Royal, Jamaica, he raided settlements and shipping on the Spanish Main, becoming wealthy as he did so. With the prize money from the raids he purchased three large sugar plantations on the island. Much of Morgan's early life is unknown. He was born in Monmouthshire, but it is not known how he made his way to the West Indies, or how he began his career as a privateer. He was probably a member of a group of raiders led by Sir Christopher Myngs in the early 1660s during the Anglo-Spanish War. Morgan became a close friend of Sir Thomas Modyford, the Governor of Jamaica. When diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of England and Spain worsened in 1667, Modyford gave Morgan a letter of marque, a licence to attack and seize Spanish vessels. Morgan subsequently conducted successful and highly lucrative raids on Puerto Principe (now Camaguey in modern Cuba) and Porto Bello (now Portobelo in modern Panama). In 1668 he sailed for Maracaibo and Gibraltar, both on Lake Maracaibo in modern-day Venezuela. He raided both cities and stripped them of their wealth before destroying a large Spanish squadron as he escaped. In 1671 Morgan attacked Panama City, landing on the Caribbean coast and traversing the isthmus before he attacked the city, which was on the Pacific coast. The battle was a rout, although the privateers profited less than in other raids. To appease the Spanish, with whom the English had signed a peace treaty, Morgan was arrested and summoned to London in 1672, but was treated as a hero by the general populace and the leading figures of government and royalty including Charles II. Morgan was appointed a Knight Bachelor in November 1674 and returned to the Colony of Jamaica shortly afterward to serve as the territory's Lieutenant Governor. He served on the Assembly of Jamaica until 1683 and on three occasions he acted as Governor of Jamaica in the absence of the post-holder. A memoir published by Alexandre Exquemelin, a former shipmate of Morgan's, accused the privateer of widespread torture and other offences; Morgan brought a libel suit against the book's English publishers and won, although the black picture Exquemelin portrayed of Morgan has affected history's view of the Welshman.

August 25, 1930: #BOTD: #HBD! Sir Sean Connery, Scottish actor, producer and sex symbol (d. October 31, 2020) is #born Thomas Connery at the Royal Maternity Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the first actor to portray fictional British secret agent James Bond on film, starring in seven Bond films between 1962 and 1983. Originating the role in Dr. No, Connery played Bond in six of Eon Productions' entries and made his final appearance in Never Say Never Again. Connery began acting in smaller theatre and television productions until his breakout role as Bond. Although he did not enjoy the off-screen attention the role gave him, the success of the Bond films brought Connery offers from notable directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet and John Huston. Their films in which Connery appeared included Marnie (1964), The Hill (1965), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), and The Man Who Would Be King (1975). He also appeared in A Bridge Too Far (1977), Highlander (1986), The Name of the Rose (1986), The Untouchables (1987), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Dragonheart (1996), The Rock (1996), and Finding Forrester (2000). Connery officially retired from acting in 2006, although he briefly returned for voice-over roles in 2012. His achievements in film were recognised with an Academy Award, two BAFTA Awards (including the BAFTA Fellowship), and three Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award and a Henrietta Award. In 1987, he was made a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in France, and he received the US Kennedy Center Honors lifetime achievement award in 1999. Connery was knighted in the 2000 New Year Honours for services to film drama. Sean Connery died in his sleep aged 90 at his home in the Lyford Cay community of Nassau in the Bahamas. His death was announced by his family and Eon Productions; although they did not disclose the cause of death, his son Jason said he had been unwell for some time. A day later, his widow revealed he had dementia in his final years. Connery's death certificate was obtained by TMZ a month after his death, showing the cause of death was pneumonia and respiratory failure, and the time of death was listed as 1:30 am. His remains were cremated, and the ashes were scattered in Scotland at undisclosed locations in 2022.

August 25, 1985: The Cold War: The Cold War (1979-1985): The Cold War (1985-1991) (The End Of The Cold War): Aviation: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Civil Aviation: Aviation Incidents And Accidents: Bar Harbor Airlines Flight 1808: -- #DOTD: #RIP: Samantha Smith, American schoolgirl, peace activist, and child actress from Manchester, Maine, who became famous during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union (b. June 29, 1972) #dies at the age of thirteen in the Bar Harbor Airlines Flight 1808 Airplane Crash. On final approach to Auburn/Lewiston Municipal Airport in Maine, the Bar Harbor Airlines Beechcraft Model 99 crashed short of the runway, killing all six passengers and two crew on board. She is buried at Estabrook Cemetery in North Amity, Maine. Samantha Smith was born Samantha Reed Smith in Houlton, Maine. In 1982, the 11 year old American schoolgirl had written a letter to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov asking, "Why do you want to conquer the whole world, or at least our country?" To her surprise, Andropov replied personally to her and offered an all-expense paid trip to the U.S.S.R. She toured the country for two weeks amid worldwide publicity and came to symbolize American and Soviet hopes for peaceful co-existance. Smith attracted extensive media attention in both countries as a "Goodwill Ambassador", becoming known as America's Youngest Ambassador and subsequently participating in peacemaking activities in Japan. With the assistance of her father Arthur (an academic), she wrote a book about her visit to the Soviet Union, Journey to the Soviet Union, and later became a child actress, hosting a child-oriented special on the 1984 United States presidential election for The Disney Channel and playing a co-starring role in the television series Lime Street.
