( #JCKaelin here: August 16 will be forever known as the day that took The King (of Rock & Roll, Elvis) and The Queen (of Soul, Aretha) ).
=========
August 16, 1977: #DOTD: #RIP: Elvis Presley, American singer, guitarist and actor, nicknamed "The King Of Rock And Roll" and "The King", regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century (b. January 8, 1935) #dies suddenly at his Graceland estate of cardiac arrest and pronounced dead at the Memphis Baptist Hospital at 3:30 p.m., aged 42. He was originally buried next to his mother at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee, but after an attempt to steal Presley's coffin, both their bodies were moved to Graceland, where they were buried in the Meditation Garden, where eventually his daughter Lisa Marie, who inherited the estate, and her son, Benjamin Keough, were buried. Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family when he was 13 years old. His music career began there in 1954, recording at Sun Records with producer Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African American music to a wider audience. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was a pioneer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. In 1955, drummer D. J. Fontana joined to complete the lineup of Presley's classic quartet and RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who would manage the singer for more than two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", was released in January 1956 and became a number one hit in the United States. With a series of successful network television appearances and chart-topping records, he became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines during a transformative era in race relations, made him enormously popular-and controversial. In November 1956, Presley made his film debut in Love Me Tender. Drafted into military service in 1958, Presley relaunched his recording career two years later with some of his most commercially successful work. He held few concerts however, and guided by Parker, proceeded to devote much of the 1960s to making Hollywood movies and soundtrack albums, most of them critically derided. In 1968, following a seven-year break from live performances, he returned to the stage in the acclaimed television comeback special Elvis, which led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of highly profitable tours. In 1973, Presley gave the first concert by a solo artist to be broadcast around the world, Aloha from Hawaii. Years of prescription drug abuse severely compromised his health, and he died suddenly in 1977 at his Graceland estate at the age of 42. Presley is one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of the 20th century. Commercially successful in many genres, including pop, country, blues, and gospel, he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music. He won three competitive Grammys, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36, and has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame.

August 16, 2018: #DOTD: #RIP: Aretha Franklin, African American singer, songwriter and pianist, referred to as "The Queen Of Soul", twice named by Rolling Stone as the greatest singer of all time (b. March 25, 1942) #dies of a malignant pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor at her home in hospice care, aged 76. She was initially thought to have died without a will. Numerous celebrities in the entertainment industry and politicians paid tribute to Franklin, including former U.S. President Barack Obama who said she "helped define the American experience". Civil rights activist and minister Al Sharpton called her a "civil rights and humanitarian icon". A memorial service was held at her home church, New Bethel Baptist Church, on August 19. Thousands then paid their respects during the public lying-in-repose at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The August 31 Homegoing Service held at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, included multiple tributes by celebrities, politicians, friends and family members and was streamed by some news agencies such as Fox News, CNN, The Word Network, BET and MSNBC. Among those who paid tribute to Aretha at the service were Ariana Grande, Bill Clinton, Rev. Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan, Faith Hill, Fantasia, the Clark Sisters, Ronald Isley, Angie Stone, Chaka Khan, Jennifer Holliday, Loretta Devine, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, Shirley Caesar, Shirma Rouse, Stevie Wonder, Eric Holder, Gladys Knight, Cedric the Entertainer, Tyler Perry, Smokey Robinson, Yolanda Adams, and Rev. Dr. William Barber II. At Franklin's request she was eulogized by Rev. Jasper Williams Jr. of Salem Baptist Church in Atlanta, as he had eulogized her father as well as speaking at other family memorials. Williams's eulogy was criticized for being "a political address that described children being in a home without a father as 'abortion after birth' and said black lives do not matter unless blacks stop killing each other". Franklin's nephew Vaughan complained of Williams: "He spoke for 50 minutes and at no time did he properly eulogize her." Following a telecast procession up Seven Mile Road, Franklin was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan. Aretha Franklin was born Aretha Louise Franklin in Memphis, Tennessee. Aretha Franklin began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, where her father, C. L. Franklin, was minister. In 1960, at the age of 18, she embarked on a secular career, recording for Columbia Records but only achieving modest success. Following her signing to Atlantic Records in 1967, Franklin achieved commercial acclaim and success with songs such as "Respect", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", "Spanish Harlem" and "Think". By the end of the 1960s decade she had gained the title "The Queen of Soul". Franklin eventually recorded a total of 112 charted singles on Billboard, including 77 Hot 100 entries, 17 top ten pop singles, 100 R & B entries and twenty number-one R & B singles, becoming the most charted female artist in the chart's history. Franklin also recorded acclaimed albums such as I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, Lady Soul, Young, Gifted and Black and Amazing Grace before experiencing problems with her record company by the mid-1970s. After her father was shot in 1979, Franklin left Atlantic and signed with Arista Records, finding success with her part in the film The Blues Brothers and with the albums Jump to It and Who's Zoomin' Who?. In 1998, Franklin won international acclaim for singing the opera aria "Nessun dorma", at the Grammys of that year replacing Luciano Pavarotti. Later that same year, she scored her final Top 40 recording with "A Rose Is Still a Rose". Franklin's other popular and well known hits include "Rock Steady", "Jump to It", "Freeway of Love", "Who's Zoomin' Who", "Chain Of Fools", "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" (with George Michael), and a remake of The Rolling Stones song "Jumpin' Jack Flash". Franklin has won a total of 18 Grammy Awards and is one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide. Franklin has been honored throughout her career including a 1987 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in which she became the first female performer to be inducted. She was inducted to the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. In August 2012, Franklin was inducted into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Franklin is listed in at least two all-time lists on Rolling Stone magazine, including the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time; and the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

( #JCKaelin here: On the very calendar date that both The King Of Rock 'N' Roll and The Queen Of Soul were to meet their maker, Robert Johnson went to The Crossroads of his own life decades ahead of them... ;) )
=========
August 16, 1938: #DOTD: #RIP: Robert Johnson, African American blues singer-songwriter and guitarist (b. May 8, 1911) #dies at the age of 27 near Greenwood, Mississippi, of unknown causes. Much mystery and popular legend surround his death. Johnson's death was not reported publicly. Almost 30 years later, Gayle Dean Wardlow, a Mississippi-based musicologist researching Johnson's life, found Johnson's death certificate, which listed only the date and location, with no official cause of death. No formal autopsy had been done. Instead, a pro forma examination was done to file the death certificate, and no immediate cause of death was determined. It is likely he had congenital syphilis and it was suspected later by medical professionals that this may have been a contributing factor in his death. However, 30 years of local oral tradition had, like the rest of his life story, built a legend which has filled in gaps in the scant historical record. Several differing accounts have described the events preceding his death. Johnson had been playing for a few weeks at a country dance in a town about 15 miles (24 km) from Greenwood. According to one theory, Johnson was murdered by the jealous husband of a woman with whom he had flirted. In an account by the blues musician Sonny Boy Williamson, Johnson had been flirting with a married woman at a dance, and she gave him a bottle of whiskey poisoned by her husband. When Johnson took the bottle, Williamson knocked it out of his hand, admonishing him to never drink from a bottle that he had not personally seen opened. Johnson replied, "Don't ever knock a bottle out of my hand." Soon after, he was offered another (poisoned) bottle and accepted it. Johnson is reported to have begun feeling ill the evening after and had to be helped back to his room in the early morning hours. Over the next three days his condition steadily worsened. Witnesses reported that he died in a convulsive state of severe pain. The musicologist Robert "Mack" McCormick claimed to have tracked down the man who murdered Johnson and to have obtained a confession from him in a personal interview, but he declined to reveal the man's name. While strychnine has been suggested as the poison that killed Johnson, at least one scholar has disputed the notion. Tom Graves, in his book Crossroads: The Life and Afterlife of Blues Legend Robert Johnson, relies on expert testimony from toxicologists to argue that strychnine has such a distinctive odor and taste that it cannot be disguised, even in strong liquor. Graves also claims that a significant amount of strychnine would have to be consumed in one sitting to be fatal, and that death from the poison would occur within hours, not days. In their 2019 book Up Jumped the Devil, Bruce Conforth and Gayle Dean Wardlow suggest that the poison was naphthalene, from dissolved mothballs. This was "a common way of poisoning people in the rural South", but was rarely fatal. However, Johnson had been diagnosed with an ulcer and with esophageal varices, and the poison was sufficient to cause them to hemorrhage. He died after two days of severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and bleeding from the mouth. The LeFlore County registrar, Cornelia Jordan, years later and after conducting an investigation into Johnson's death for the state director of vital statistics, R. N. Whitfield, wrote a clarifying note on the back of Johnson's death certificate: "I talked with the white man on whose place this negro died and I also talked with a negro woman on the place. The plantation owner said the negro man, seemingly about 26 years old, came from Tunica two or three weeks before he died to play banjo at a negro dance given there on the plantation. He stayed in the house with some of the negroes saying he wanted to pick cotton. The white man did not have a doctor for this negro as he had not worked for him. He was buried in a homemade coffin furnished by the county. The plantation owner said it was his opinion that the man died of syphilis." In 2006, a medical practitioner, David Connell, suggested, on the basis of photographs showing Johnson's "unnaturally long fingers" and "one bad eye", that Johnson may have had Marfan syndrome, which could have both affected his guitar playing and contributed to his death due to aortic dissection. The exact location of Johnson's grave is officially unknown; three different markers have been erected at possible sites in church cemeteries outside Greenwood. Research in the 1980s and 1990s strongly suggests Johnson was buried in the graveyard of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church near Morgan City, Mississippi, not far from Greenwood, in an unmarked grave. A one-ton cenotaph in the shape of an obelisk, listing all of Johnson's song titles, with a central inscription by Peter Guralnick, was placed at this location in 1990, paid for by Columbia Records and numerous smaller contributions made through the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund. In 1990, a small marker with the epitaph "Resting in the Blues" was placed in the cemetery of Payne Chapel, near Quito, Mississippi, by an Atlanta rock group named the Tombstones, after they saw a photograph in Living Blues magazine of an unmarked spot alleged by one of Johnson's ex-girlfriends to be Johnson's burial site. More recent research by Stephen LaVere (including statements from Rosie Eskridge, the wife of the supposed gravedigger, in 2000) indicates that the actual grave site is under a big pecan tree in the cemetery of the Little Zion Church, north of Greenwood along Money Road. Through LaVere, Sony Music placed a marker at this site, which bears LaVere's name as well as Johnson's. Researchers Bruce Conforth and Gayle Dean Wardlow also concluded this was Johnson's resting place in their 2019 biography. John Hammond Jr., in the documentary The Search for Robert Johnson (1991), suggests that owing to poverty and lack of transportation Johnson is most likely to have been buried in a pauper's grave (or "potter's field") very near where he died. Robert Johnson was born Robert Leroy Johnson in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. Robert Johnson's landmark recordings in 1936 and 1937 display a combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that has influenced later generations of musicians. Johnson's poorly documented life and death at age 27 have given rise to much legend. One Faustian myth says that he sold his soul to the devil at a local crossroads of Mississippi highways to achieve success. As an itinerant performer who played mostly on street corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances, Johnson had little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime. After the reissue of his recordings in 1961, on the LP King of the Delta Blues Singers, his work reached a wider audience. Johnson is now recognized as a master of the blues, particularly of the Mississippi Delta blues style. He is credited by many rock musicians as an important influence; the blues and rock musician Eric Clapton has called Johnson "the most important blues singer that ever lived." Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its first induction ceremony, in 1986, as an early influence on rock and roll. In 2003, David Fricke ranked Johnson fifth in Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

August 16, 1793: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The French Revolution: The French Revolutionary And Napoleonic Wars (The Great French War) (The French Revolutionary Wars, The Napoleonic Wars): Levee En masse (French: "Mass Levy"): -- A Levee En Masse is decreed by the National Convention of all able-bodied, unmarried men between the ages of 18 and 25. The concept of "Levee En Masse" originated as a French term for mass conscription during the French Revolutionary Wars, particularly for the period following August 16, 1793. The concept of a levee en masse, referred to modern times as "conscription" or "the draft", originated with this event, and it formed an integral part of the creation of national identity, making it unique from all other forms of conscription in any and all countries which had existed before this date, and marking the beginning of the policy of conscription used by all other countries thereafter who require a compulsory draft of their nation's citizens into their military's service, either in part (selective conscription) or in their entirety (universal conscription).

August 16, 1858: The Industrial Revolution: The First Industrial Revolution/The Second Industrial Revolution (1760 - 1914)): Telecommunications: Telegraphy: Transatlantic Telegraphy: -- The world's first transatlantic telegraph cable is officially inaugurated when Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom sends an official telegram to U.S. President James Buchanan congratulating him on the successful establishment of transatlantic telegraph service; President Buchanan responded with thanks for her congratulations. Cyrus West Field and the Atlantic Telegraph Company were behind the construction of the cable. The project began in 1854 and was completed in 1858. The cable functioned for only three weeks, but it was the first such project to yield practical results. Signal quality declined rapidly, slowing transmission to an almost unusable speed. The cable was destroyed the following month when Wildman Whitehouse applied excessive voltage to it while trying to achieve faster operation. It has been argued that the faulty manufacture, storage and handling of the 1858 cable would have led to premature failure in any case. The cable's rapid failure undermined public and investor confidence and delayed efforts to restore a connection. A second attempt was undertaken in 1865 with much-improved material and, following some setbacks, a connection was completed and put into service on July 28, 1866. This cable proved more durable.

August 16, 1896: Gold Rushes: Eureka!: The Klondike Gold Rush (The Great Klondike Gold Rush): -- Gold is discovered in Rabbit Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River in Alaska. It results in The Great Klondike Gold Rush, a migration by an estimated 100,000 prospectors to the Klondike region of the Yukon in north-western Canada between 1896 and 1899. Gold was discovered there by local miners on August 16, 1896, and, when news reached Seattle and San Francisco the following year, it triggered a stampede of prospectors. Some became wealthy, but the majority went in vain. It has been immortalized in photographs, books, films, and artifacts. To reach the gold fields, most took the route through the ports of Dyea and Skagway in Southeast Alaska. Here, the Klondikers could follow either the Chilkoot or the White Pass trails to the Yukon River and sail down to the Klondike. Each of them was required to bring a year's supply of food by the Canadian authorities in order to prevent starvation. In all, their equipment weighed close to a ton, which for most had to be carried in stages by themselves. Together with mountainous terrain and cold climate, this meant that those who persisted did not arrive until summer 1898. Once there, they found few opportunities, and many left disappointed. Mining was challenging as the ore was distributed in an uneven manner and digging was made slow by permafrost. As a result, some miners chose to buy and sell claims, building up huge investments and letting others do the work. To accommodate the prospectors, boom towns sprang up along the routes and at their end Dawson City was founded at the confluence of the Klondike and the Yukon River. From a population of 500 in 1896, the town grew to house around 30,000 people by summer 1898. Built of wood, isolated and unsanitary, Dawson suffered from fires, high prices, and epidemics. Despite this, the wealthiest prospectors spent extravagantly gambling and drinking in the saloons. The Native Han people, on the other hand, suffered from the rush, being moved into a reserve to make way for the stampeders, and many died. From 1898, the newspapers that had encouraged so many to travel to the Klondike lost interest in it. In the summer of 1899, gold was discovered around Nome in west Alaska, and many prospectors left the Klondike for the new goldfields, marking the end of the rush. The boom towns declined and the population of Dawson City fell. Gold mining activity lasted until 1903 when production peaked after heavier equipment was brought in. Since then the Klondike has been mined on and off, and today the legacy draws tourists to the region and contributes to its prosperity.

August 16: World Bratwurst Day: -- Today's the day to hit up your local grocery store or meat market and bring home some delicious bratwurst, a high-quality type of sausage popular in Germany and Poland made of pork, beef, or veal! While it's certain that we've all had our share of sausages in our day, particularly that low-born sheath of processed meat known as the frankfurter, not everyone has had the pleasure of enjoying a bratwurst. Bratwurst is typically made from pork, but can, in fact, be made from any meat, and World Bratwurst Day celebrates every variety you can conceive of. Bratwurst is a sausage that is heavily spiced, and it tends to be enjoyed either on its own with a side of sauerkraut or in a roll with mustard. The word 'bratwurst' comes from two German words. The word sausage is 'wurst' and then 'braten' means to fry. Pretty self-explanatory, right? Bratwursts have been around since the 14th century, and we will tell you a bit more about this. These sausages are typically made from beef, veal, or pork. These sausages are so popular that there have even been festivals created in their honor, and most people like to wash bratwursts down with a cold beer. You may assume that a bratwurst and a sausage are both the same things, but that is not the case. A Bratwurst is a specific kind of fresh link sausage, which is made with veal or pork. However, sausage simply refers to ground meat being prepared in a certain way. Some people also assume that bratwursts and hot dogs are the same. Hot dog casing is a lot thinner than the casings that are utilized for bratwurst and other types of fresh link sausages. Very traditional recipes for bratwurst call on the use of both eggs and cream in their preparation. However, it is important to note that different regions in Germany have different recipes. Bratwurst even differs in some regions of the United States as well, for example, in Wisconsin, Sheboygan-style bratwursts are very popular. Sausage is quite ancient, going back as far as 228AD according to archaeological evidence, but the noble Bratwurst has only been around since 1313. Every region has a different variety of bratwurst to call its own, with over 40 varieties coming from within the country of Germany alone. Throughout Germany Bratwurst are perceived as more of a snack food than a main dish, though they can often be found served in the latter capacity at pubs, usually with sauerkraut or potato salad and a dense rye bread or pretzel. New York City may have hot dog vendors, but Germany has Bratwurst carts! The varieties that come from Franconia date back to the first bratwursts, and are usually heavily laden with marjoram as a seasoning. These bratwursts tend to be large and filled with coarsely ground meat which lends them an overall juicier texture and flavor. While those from the city of Corburg only use salt, pepper, nutmeg, and lemon zest. Polish brats are also a favorite in Poland and wherever Polish communities are located throughout the world, particularly in the United States, where they consititute an important part of Polka culture. World Bratwurst Day celebrates all these and the hundreds of other varieties available, and encourages us to explore the culinary world of the Brat and see what our taste buds can find!

August 16: National Rum Day: -- Today's a day for blended beverages and cocktails to create a delicious celebration! Rum is a distilled clear alcoholic beverage which is a byproduct of sugar production. It can also be made directly from sugar cane juice. After the fermentation and distillation process, most rum ages in wooden oak barrels. Rum is the third most popular spirit in the United States. Only vodka and all the whiskeys combined beat it for first and second-rankings. The spirit finds its way into citrusy mixed drinks, and cool blended summer cocktails. So much so, that rum stirs up images of sandy beaches and brightly colored umbrellas in fruity drinks. However, rum also conjures up sailors and pirates. The reason for that is how rum came to be. In the West Indies during the 1600s, large plantations grew sugar cane. When they extracted the sugar, they created a by-product called molasses. For years, the molasses was a waste product until it was discovered it could be distilled - into rum. Then, rum became not only a commodity for trade but also a ration on the ships delivering the product. Even in the modern Royal Navy, British sailors received an allotment of rum until 1970. In 1764, the British Crown placed a tax on sugar, molasses and rum on the American colonies. This tax was called The Sugar Act of 1764. It was instrumental in the unrest that finally became the American Revolution.

August 16: St. Roch's Day (St. Rocco's Day): -- Today is the feast of St. Roch, a Frenchman, who is recognized as the patron saint of dogs. The day is revered throughout Italy. In Realmont, Sicily, the Saint's poverty is commemorated by a procession of people dressed in rags carrying a shabby image of a saint. In Spain, the San Roque festivals are held annually in August around the province of La Coruna. They feature traditional dances of farmers and sailors and processions in honor of St. Roch. St. Roch. or St. Rocco, is a Catholic saint, a confessor whose death is observed on August 16 and September 9 in Italy. In English, it can also be called the Rock, and it has the Rollox designation in Glasgow, Scotland, which is said to be a distortion of Loch Roch, which once belonged to a small lake near the Roch Chapel in 1506. He is considered the patron saint of dogs, the disabled, unjustly accused people, bachelors, and many other things. According to the Golden Legend, he was born in Montpellier, "on the border of France," in the family of the noble governor of this city. Even his birth was considered a miracle because his noble mother was barren until she prayed to the Virgin Mary. Miraculously born with a red cross on his chest, he began to show interest in strict asceticism and great piety at an early age. After the death of his parents in the 12th year of his life, he distributed all his worldly goods to the poor and went as a beggar pilgrim to Rome. Arriving in Italy during the plague, he took great care of the sick in public hospitals in Aquapendente, Cesena, Novara, and Rome and is said to have performed many miraculous healings through prayers and the signs of the cross, and the touch of his hand. He later contracted the disease himself and went into the woods to die alone. But his faithful dog brought him food every day, and he recovered enough to return to his home in Montpellier. However, he has changed so much that no one has recognized him. He was arrested as a spy and died in prison.

August 16: National Tell A Joke Day: -- An annual day will be filled with smiles and laughter from morning till night! Jokes consist of humorous stories, either written or verbal, that often end with a punchline. While slapstick includes props and even minor stunts on the part of the storyteller, the best jokes are usually short. They involve a little misdirection and a well-delivered punchline. The more jokes you tell, the more fun you will have, and so will those around you. Jokes have been a part of human culture since at least 1900 BC. Since jokes come in many forms, try out your favorite. For some, that might be a one-liner or a knock-knock joke. While many people groan at the sight of a pun, they bring on chuckles, too. If you aren't comfortable with the whole comedic act, rely on your sense of irony. Use this approach like seasoning, however. You might have a tough crowd. Others simply rely on gestures to express humor. When telling a joke, timing and delivery can be an essential element. Without it, the joke will fall flat. Also, be sure to know the audience. For example, clown jokes may not go over well at a phobia convention. In moderation, laughter is healthy, uses the abdominal muscles, and releases endorphins (natural feel-good chemicals) into the brain!

August 16: National Roller Coaster Day: -- An annual permission to flock to amusement parks for a thrill, a few exciting screams, and to celebrate National Roller Coaster Day@ Take a ride on a roller coaster near you. The day commemorates the first verticle loop roller coaster which was patented by Edwin Prescott on this day in 1898. A roller coaster consists of one or multiple cars on a track. While they are similar to railroad systems in design, the inclines and vertical loops incorporated in the structures aren't for transportation. These elements boost the thrills rollercoaster enthusiasts seek! The oldest roller coasters are believed to have originated from the so-called "Russian Mountains." Built-in the 17th century, these specially constructed hills of ice located near Saint Petersburg, Russia rose between 70 and 80 feet in height. Passengers faced 50-degree drops. Wooden supports supplied reinforcement. Roller coaster designs existed since at least 1872 when J.G. Taylor received one of the earliest patents. He called his creation an inclined railway. Another patent granted for an inclined-plane railway was granted to Richard Knudsen in 1878. For years, history has believed the first roller coaster in America opened at Coney Island on June 26, 1884. However, tracing J.G. Taylor's patent and newspaper articles tells us a different story. According to the Providence Evening Press dated June 1872, Taylor's elevated railway at Rocky Point, Rhode Island extended 400 feet and gave nine passengers a ride. It all started with a shove, allowing gravity to do the rest. While Prescott's patent detailed ways to improve upon structures such as J.G. Taylor's and that built at Coney Island, it was Prescott's designs that led to the roller coasters we know today. His design gave riders a reason to scream and keep coming back for the rush of excitement. To observe National Roller Coaster Day: Celebrate by visiting an amusement park near you. While enjoying a roller coaster ride or two, also check out some roller coaster history. Check out the science behind the structures and the gravity-defying curves. Seek out some of the most thrilling roller coasters in the country and world! If you cannot get to a roller coaster, make plans for your next roller coaster adventure! And use #NationalRollerCoasterDay to post on social media! Since 1986, National Roller Coaster Day has been celebrated. Roller coaster enthusiasts around the country promote the day through amusement parks with events.

August 16: National Authenticity Day: -- A day of recognition of the power of authenticity, a term that goes beyond just "being yourself." It is dedicated to people who decide to do things their way rather than simply check the box. They are not afraid to show off their features, their way of life, which may seem strange to some, and their unusual clothes. National Authenticity Day will be a day to celebrate and showcase the most unique and authentic version of yourself, as well as be bold and cool :) . In psychology, existential psychotherapy, existentialist philosophy, and aesthetics, authenticity is a concept of personality. In existentialism, authenticity is the degree to which a person's actions correspond to his values and desires, despite external pressures on social conformism. The conscious Self has come to terms with a state that it has thrown into an absurd world (without values and meaninglessness) that was not created by him or her, thus confronting external forces and influences that are different from and not different from the Self. In the 20th century, Anglo-American concerns about authenticity focused on the work of existentialist philosophers whose native language was not English. Therefore, the correct and accurate translation of the term 'existentialism' has provoked much debate, for which the philosopher Walter Kaufmann collected the canon of existentialist philosophers. It includes the Dane Seren Kierkegaard, the German Martin Heidegger, and the Frenchman Jean-Paul Sartre, for whom the conscious self comes to terms with existence (being and life) in an absurd materialist world containing external forces, like Geworfenheit (Abandonment). So, personal authenticity is how a man or woman acts and changes in response to the influence of the outside world on the Self. In art, among artists, authenticity describes a work of art that is true to the values of the artist. In psychology, authenticity defines a person who lives a life according to his true Self and personal values and not according to the external requirements of society, such as social conventions, kinship, and duty. National Authenticity Day is a day of recognition of the beauty and power of authenticity. A true definition that goes far beyond just "being yourself" is a day to fully reveal your authenticity, connect with others as humanely as possible, celebrate the leadership that inspires you, and decide to do things your way.

August 16: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The American Enlightenment: The American Revolution: The American Revolutionary War: Battles Of The American Revolutionary War In New York State: The Saratoga Campaign: The Battle Of Bennington: -- August 16 is a state holiday in Vermont, where people honor the American victory against the British forces at the August 16, 1777 Battle Of Bennington, part of the Saratoga Campaign of The American Revolutionary War, a pivotal moment for America's independence. The annual traditions, including the memorial services for the fallen soldiers, are held. In Bennington, there is a battle re-enactment put on by the local history foundation. The Battle of Bennington took place on a farm in Walloomsac, New York, about 10 miles (16 km) from its namesake, Bennington, Vermont, but the battle is so named because the British were headed for a cache of weapons and munitions stored where the Bennington Battle Monument now stands in present-day Old Bennington, Vermont. A rebel force of 2,000 men, primarily New Hampshire and Massachusetts militiamen, led by General John Stark, and reinforced by Vermont militiamen led by Colonel Seth Warner and members of the Green Mountain Boys, decisively defeated a detachment of General John Burgoyne's army led by Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Baum, and supported by additional men under Lieutenant Colonel Heinrich von Breymann. Baum's detachment was a mixed force of 700, composed primarily of dismounted Brunswick dragoons, Canadians, Loyalists and Indians. He was sent by Burgoyne to raid Bennington in the disputed New Hampshire Grants area for horses, draft animals, provisions, and other supplies. Believing the town to be only lightly defended, Burgoyne and Baum were unaware that Stark and 1,500 militiamen were stationed there. After a rain-caused standoff, Stark's men enveloped Baum's position, taking many prisoners, and killing Baum. Reinforcements for both sides arrived as Stark and his men were mopping up, and the battle restarted, with Warner and Stark driving away Breymann's reinforcements with heavy casualties. The battle was a major strategic success for the American cause and is considered part of the turning point of the Revolutionary War; it reduced Burgoyne's army in size by almost 1,000 men, led his Native American supporters to largely abandon him, and deprived him of much-needed supplies, such as mounts for his cavalry regiments, draft animals and provisions, all factors that contributed to Burgoyne's eventual defeat at Saratoga. The victory galvanized colonial support for the independence movement, and played a key role in bringing France into the war on the rebel side.

August 16: National Airborne Day: -- A day chosen by former President George W. Bush in 2002 as a day to recognize the past, present, and future contributions of American airborne troops in all campaigns, theaters, and peacekeeping missions. For example, the invasion of Normandy during World War II might have gone the wrong way and cost thousands more lives, if not for Allied soldiers dropping from aircraft behind enemy lines. From the first American use of paratroopers on August 16, 1942 to the 101st "Screaming Eagles," airborne divisions are some of our best and bravest. In terms of young or old warfare tactics, using American airborne forces to surprise an enemy by landing behind battle lines has only been a "thing" since the 1940s. It was just after World War I when, perhaps looking back in hindsight with better vision, Brigadier General Billy Mitchell first came up with a viable version of the idea of "dropping" troops into combat. The idea was developed and tested at Fort Benning, Georgia, and first "went live" in the North African campaign of the Second World War, meeting with decisive success. Perhaps best illustrated by the film "Saving Private Ryan," paratroopers in WWII suffered some disadvantages when they parachuted into German territories, such as disorientation or losing their sense of compass directions during a nighttime paratrooper assault. The second was a lack of ready supplies. Airborne troops sometimes had to scrounge, be cunning, and exploit every resource to procure food, weapons, and ammunition. And that's to say nothing about being surrounded by the enemy on all sides! With paratroopers now jumping out of an aircraft at the rate of about 118.5 feet per second, National Airborne Day is also a time to recognize the vigorous training of airborne units in the Army. The safety of this training is also important to note. A jumpmasters attention to detail is critical, with equipment checked regularly. Airborne tactics have steadily advanced alongside other military strategies, up until 2002, when President Bush's proclamation made the anniversary of the first airborne assault a holiday. The U.S. Senate backed that up in Senate Resolution 235 in 2009. Since then, August 16 is a patriotic day with a special cachet because airborne troops are said to be the elite of the elite, earning top honors across the Armed Services.

August 16: Surveillance Day: -- Surveillance cameras are all around us, especially in cities. See this first-hand by spending the day looking for them, and giving a wave to any you see. These days there are more and more people who think that the whole surveillance issue has gone a bit too far. It doesn't matter where we are or what we're doing, if we're outdoors, especially in a city, there is a very high probability that we're being recorded. Of course, surveillance cameras have helped to make countless cities safer by catching various crimes on video-from theft to vandalism to assault-thus allowing the police to apprehend the criminals committing them faster and easier. Still, many can't help but feel uncomfortable with the fact that almost all of their actions are being monitored, especially those who would not think of committing crimes. Some have even gone as far as to call surveillance cameras an Orwellian invasion of the privacy everyone should be entitled to. The first surveillance cameras were created by German engineer Walter Bruch and was installed by Siemens AG in Germany in 1942 to observe the launch of V-2 rockets. In the U.S. the first commercial closed-circuit television system, Vericon, became available in 1949. The earliest video surveillance systems required constant human monitoring because at the time there was no way to record and store information. Then, when VCR technology became available in the 1970s, it became possible to record and erase information, causing the use of video surveillance to become much more practical and thus much more common. Olean, New York was the first city in the United States to install video cameras along its main business street in an effort to fight crime in 1968. A few years later, in 1973, cameras also appeared in Times Square in New York City. In the 1980s video surveillance began to spread across the country, especially in public areas. Businesses that were especially prone to theft, such as banks and stores, also began to install surveillance cameras. In 1998, 3,000 CCTV systems were in use in New York City. Today, surveillance cameras are also used in traffic monitoring, transport safety, control of retail, as well as home and school security. The use of video surveillance in public places became more common after the September 11th Terrorist attacks so as to deter future terrorist attacks. In 2010, there were more than 10,000 CCTV systems and counting in Chicago. Greater London also has a large amount, with the number being estimated around 500,000, and the total number of cameras in the UK to be around 4,200,000. Surveillance Day was created several years ago to help us all take a step back and having a bit of fun with issues that are usually gravely serious.

August 16, 2007: #DOTD: #RIP: Max Roach, African American jazz drummer and composer (b. January 10, 1924) #dies of complications related to Alzheimer's and dementia in Manhattan, New York City in the early morning, aged 83. More than 1,900 people attended his funeral at Riverside Church on August 24, 2007. He was interred at the Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx. He was born Maxwell Lemuel Roach in the Township of Newland, Pasquotank County, North Carolina, which borders the southern edge of the Great Dismal Swamp. The Township of Newland is sometimes mistaken for Newland Town in Avery County, North Carolina. Although his birth certificate lists his date of birth as January 10, 1924, Roach has been quoted by Phil Schaap, saying that his family believed he was actually born on January 8, 1925. Max Roach was a pioneer of bebop. Roach went on to work in many other styles of music, and is generally considered alongside the most important drummers in history. He worked with many famous jazz musicians, including Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Abbey Lincoln, Dinah Washington, Charles Mingus, Billy Eckstine, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, and Booker Little. He was inducted into the Down Beat Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1992. Roach also led his own groups, notably a pioneering quintet co-led with trumpeter Clifford Brown and the percussion ensemble M'Boom, and made numerous musical statements relating to the Civil Rights Movement.

August 16, 1948: #DOTD: #RIP: Babe Ruth, nicknamed "The Bambino" and "The Sultan Of Swat", American professional baseball player and coach whose career in Major League Baseball (MLB) spanned 22 seasons, from 1914 through 1935 (b. February 6, 1895) #dies of esophageal cancer in New York City, aged 53. He is buried at The Gate Of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York. Babe Ruth was born George Herman Ruth Jr. at 216 Emory Street in the Pigtown section of Baltimore, Maryland. George Herman "Babe" Ruth Jr. was . He began his MLB career as a stellar left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, but achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees. Ruth established many MLB batting (and some pitching) records, including career home runs (714), runs batted in (RBIs) (2,213), bases on balls (2,062), slugging percentage (.690), and on-base plus slugging (OPS) (1.164); the latter two still stand as of 2018. Ruth is regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture and is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time. In 1936, Ruth was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of its "first five" inaugural members. At age seven, Ruth was sent to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, a reformatory where he learned life lessons and baseball skills from Brother Matthias Boutlier of the Xaverian Brothers, the school's disciplinarian and a capable baseball player. In 1914, Ruth was signed to play minor-league baseball for the Baltimore Orioles but was soon sold to the Red Sox. By 1916, he had built a reputation as an outstanding pitcher who sometimes hit long home runs, a feat unusual for any player in the pre-1920 dead-ball era. Although Ruth twice won 23 games in a season as a pitcher and was a member of three World Series championship teams with the Red Sox, he wanted to play every day and was allowed to convert to an outfielder. With regular playing time, he broke the MLB single-season home run record in 1919. After that season, Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sold Ruth to the Yankees amid controversy. The trade fueled Boston's subsequent 86 year championship drought and popularized the "Curse of the Bambino" superstition. In his 15 years with the Yankees, Ruth helped the team win seven American League (AL) pennants and four World Series championships. His big swing led to escalating home run totals that not only drew fans to the ballpark and boosted the sport's popularity but also helped usher in baseball's live-ball era, which evolved from a low-scoring game of strategy to a sport where the home run was a major factor. As part of the Yankees' vaunted "Murderers' Row" lineup of 1927, Ruth hit 60 home runs, which extended his MLB single-season record by a single home run. Ruth's last season with the Yankees was 1934; he retired from the game the following year, after a short stint with the Boston Braves. During his career, Ruth led the AL in home runs during a season twelve times. Ruth's legendary power and charismatic personality made him a larger-than-life figure during the Roaring Twenties. During his career, he was the target of intense press and public attention for his baseball exploits and off-field penchants for drinking and womanizing. His often reckless lifestyle was tempered by his willingness to do good by visiting children at hospitals and orphanages. After his retirement as a player, he was denied the opportunity to manage a major league club, most likely due to poor behavior during parts of his playing career. In his final years, Ruth made many public appearances, especially in support of American efforts in World War II. In 1946, he became ill with esophageal cancer and died two years later as a result of the disease.

August 16, 1956: #DOTD: #RIP: Bela Lugosi, Hungarian-American actor, famous for portraying Count Dracula in the 1931 film and for his roles in various other horror films (b. October 20, 1882) #dies aged 73 of a heart attack in the bedroom of his Los Angeles apartment while taking a nap. His wife Hope discovered him dead, on his bed dressed only in his underwear, when she came home from work that evening, he having apparently died peacefully in his sleep around 6:45 PM according to the medical examiner. He was 73 and weighed 140 pounds. The rumor that Lugosi was clutching the script for The Final Curtain, a planned Ed Wood project, at the time of his death is not true. Lugosi was buried wearing one of the "Dracula" capes and his full costume as well as his Dracula ring in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. Contrary to popular belief, Lugosi never requested to be buried in his cloak; Bela G. Lugosi confirmed on numerous occasions that he and his mother, Lillian, made the decision but believed that it is what his father would have wanted. The funeral was held on Saturday, August 18 at the Utter-McKinley funeral home in Hollywood. Attendees included Forrest J. Ackerman, Ed Wood (who was a pall bearer), Tor Johnson, Conrad Brooks, Richard Sheffield, both of the widows (Hope and Lillian), Bela Lugosi Jr., Norma McCarty, Loretta King, Paul Marco and actor George Becwar. Bela's fourth wife Lillian paid for the cemetery plot and stone (which was inscribed "Beloved Father"), while Hope Lugosi paid for the coffin and the funeral service. Lugosi's will left several inexpensive pieces of real estate in Elsinore and only 1K USD cash to his son, but since the will had been written on January 12, 1954 (before Lugosi's fifth marriage), Bela Jr. had to share the thousand dollars evenly with Hope Lugosi. Hope later gave most of Lugosi's personal belongings and memorabilia to Bela's young neighborhood friend Richard Sheffield, who gave Lugosi's duplicate Dracula cape to Bela Jr. and sold some of the other items to Forrest J. Ackerman. Hope told Sheffield she had searched the apartment for several days looking for 3K USD she suspected Lugosi had hidden there, but she never found it. Sheffield said years later "Lugosi had probably spent it all on alcohol." Born Bela Ferenc Dezso Blasko in Lugos, Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), he had been playing small parts on the stage in his native Hungary before making his first film in 1917, but had to leave the country after the failed Hungarian Communist Revolution of 1919. He had roles in several films in Weimar Germany before arriving in the United States as a seaman on a merchant ship. In 1927, he appeared as Count Dracula in a Broadway adaptation of Bram Stoker' novel. He later appeared in the classic 1931 film Dracula by Universal Pictures. Through the 1930s, he occupied an important niche in popular horror films, with their East European setting, but his Hungarian accent limited his repertoire, and he tried unsuccessfully to avoid typecasting. Meanwhile, he was often paired with Boris Karloff, who was able to demand top billing. To his frustration, Lugosi was increasingly restricted to minor parts, kept employed by the studio principally for the sake of his name on the posters. Among his pairings with Karloff, only in The Black Cat (1934), The Raven (1935), and Son of Frankenstein (1939) did he perform major roles again, and, even in The Raven, Karloff received top billing despite Lugosi performing the lead role. By this time, Lugosi had been receiving regular medication for sciatic neuritis, and he became addicted to morphine and methadone. This drug dependence was noted by producers, and the offers eventually dwindled down to a few parts in Ed Wood' low-budget movies, most notably Plan 9 from Outer Space.

August 16, 1888: #BOTD: #HBD! T. E. Lawrence, British archaeologist, military officer, diplomat, writer and cultural icon, popularly known as Lawrence of Arabia, renowned for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign and the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War (d. May 19, 1935) is #born Thomas Edward Lawrenc in Tremadoc, North Wales, in a house named Gorphwysfa, now known as Snowdon Lodge. Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence CB DSO (CB: Most Honourable Order Of The Bath; DSO: Distinguished Service Order) cooperated in 1918 with war correspondent Lowell Thomas and his cameraman Harry Chase and had shot a great deal of film and many photographs, which Thomas used in a highly lucrative film that promoted the legend of Lawrence of Arabia and toured the world after the war. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing, earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia-a title used for the 1962 film based on his wartime activities. He was born out of wedlock in Tremadog, Wales, in August 1888 to Thomas Chapman (who became, in 1914, Sir Thomas Chapman, 7th Baronet), an Anglo-Irish nobleman from County Westmeath, and Sarah Junner, a Scottish governess (whom Chapman had left his wife and first family in Ireland to cohabit with; they called themselves Mr and Mrs Lawrence). In 1896, the Lawrences moved to Oxford, where their son attended the High School and then from 1907 to 1910 studied History at Jesus College. Between 1910 and 1914 he worked as an archaeologist for the British Museum, chiefly at Carchemish, in Ottoman Syria. Soon after the outbreak of war he volunteered for the British Army and was stationed in Egypt. In 1916, he was sent to Arabia on an intelligence mission and quickly became involved with the Arab Revolt, providing, along with other British officers, liaison to the Arab forces. Working closely with Emir Faisal, a leader of the revolt, he participated in and sometimes led military activities against the Ottoman armed forces, culminating in the capture of Damascus in October 1918. After the war, Lawrence joined the Foreign Office, working with both the British government and with Faisal. In 1922, he retreated from public life and spent the years until 1935 serving as an enlisted man, mostly in the Royal Air Force, with a brief stint in the Army. During this time, he wrote and published his best-known work, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, an autobiographical account of his participation in the Arab Revolt. He also translated books into English and wrote The Mint, which was published posthumously and detailed his time in the Royal Air Force working as an ordinary aircraftman. He corresponded extensively and was friendly with well-known artists, writers, and politicians. For the Royal Air Force, he participated in the development of rescue motorboats. Lawrence's public image resulted in part from the sensationalised reporting of the Arab revolt by American journalist Lowell Thomas, as well as from Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Lawrence died in a motorcycle accident in Bovington Camp, Dorset, South West England, aged 46. On May 13 1935, was riding his Brough Superior SS100 motorcycle in Dorset close to his cottage Clouds Hill, near Wareham, just two months after leaving military service.A dip in the road obstructed his view of two boys on their bicycles; he swerved to avoid them, lost control, and was thrown over the handlebars. He died six days later; the location of the crash is marked by a small memorial at the roadside. One of the doctors attending him was neurosurgeon Hugh Cairns, who consequently began a long study of the loss of life by motorcycle dispatch riders through head injuries. His research led to the use of crash helmets by both military and civilian motorcyclists to this day. The Moreton estate borders Bovington Camp where the accident occured, and Lawrence bought his nearby Clouds Hill home from his cousins, the Frampton family. He had been a frequent visitor to their home, Okers Wood House, and had corresponded with Louisa Frampton for years. Lawrence's mother arranged with the Framptons to have his body buried in their family plot in the separate burial ground of St Nicholas' Church, Moreton. The coffin was transported on the Frampton estate's bier. Mourners included Winston Churchill, E. M. Forster, Lady Astor, and Lawrence's youngest brother Arnold. Churchill described him like this: "Lawrence was one of those beings whose pace of life was faster and more intense than what is normal."

August 16, 1959: #DOTD: #RIP: William Halsey Jr., nicknamed Bull Halsey, American Admiral, one of four officers to have attained the rank of five-star fleet admiral of the United States Navy (all of them during World War II, the others being William Leahy, Ernest King, and Chester W. Nimitz), who played a leading role in the defeat of the Japanese in the Pacific Ocean Theater of The Pacific War of World War II (b. October 30, 1882) #dies of a heart attack at age 76 while vacationing on Fishers Island, New York. After lying in state in the Washington National Cathedral, he was interred on August 20, near his parents in Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Frances Grandy Halsey, is buried with him. Asked about his contribution in the Pacific War and the role he played in defending the United States, Halsey said merely "There are no great men, just great challenges which ordinary men, out of necessity, are forced by circumstances to meet." Bull Halsey was born William Frederick Halsey Jr. in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Halsey graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1904. He served in the Great White Fleet, the popular nickname for the group of United States Navy battleships which completed a journey around the globe from December 16, 1907 to February 22, 1909 by order of President Theodore Roosevelt. During World War I, he commanded the destroyer USS Shaw. He took command of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga in 1935 after completing a course in naval aviation, and was promoted to the rank of rear admiral in 1938. At the start of the War in the Pacific (1941-1945), Halsey commanded the task force centered on the carrier USS Enterprise in a series of raids against Japanese-held targets. Halsey was made commander of the South Pacific Area, and led the Allied forces over the course of the Battle for Guadalcanal (1942-1943) and the fighting up the Solomon chain (1942-1945). In 1942, he launched the Doolittle Raid, the first air raid on Japan. From 1942-44, he coordinated successful attacks on the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. In 1943 he was made commander of the Third Fleet, the post he held through the rest of the war. In 1944, he took a problematic and controversial role in leading the U.S. fleet to victory at the Battle Of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history. He was promoted to fleet admiral in December 1945 and retired from active service in March 1947.

August 16: 1943: Naval History: The History Of The United States Navy: The New United States Navy (The New Navy, The United States Navy 1885-Present): United States Navy Commissions: Aircraft Carriers: USS Intrepid (CV/CVA/CVS-11) (The Fighting "I"): -- USS Intrepid, one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy, is commissioned with Captain Thomas L. Sprague in command before heading to the Caribbean for shakedown and training. She is the fourth US Navy ship to bear the name. Intrepid participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Because of her prominent role in battle, she was nicknamed "the Fighting I", while her frequent bad luck and time spent in dry dock for repairs - she was torpedoed once and hit in separate attacks by four Japanese kamikaze aircraft - earned her the nicknames "Decrepit" and "the Dry I". Decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, she was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA), and then eventually became an antisubmarine carrier (CVS). In her second career, she served mainly in the Atlantic, but also participated in the Vietnam War. She was the recovery ship for both astronaut Scott Carpenter and his Mercury-Atlas 7 space capsule, Aurora 7, and astronauts John Young and Gus Grissom and their Gemini 3 space capsule, Molly Brown the latter the first controlled re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. Decommissioned for the second time in 1974, in 1982 Intrepid became the foundation of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City.

August 16, 1908: White Supremacy: Terrorism: Anti-Black Racism: Anti-Black Racism In The United States: Race Riots: Race Riots In The United States: The Nadir Of American Race Relations (1877/1890 - 1901/1923/1941 [Dates Disputed]): Terrorism: The Springfield Race Riot Of 1908: -- A mass three-day white riot committed by a mob of some 5,000 white Americans and European immigrants against African Americans in Springfield, Illinois concludes at the end of its three-day duration. Two black men had been arrested as suspects in the rape, and attempted rape, respectively, of two young white women. When a mob seeking to lynch the men discovered the sheriff had transferred them out of the city to prevent such violence, the whites furiously spread out to attack black neighborhoods, murdered black citizens on the streets, and destroyed black businesses and homes. The riot, trials and aftermath are said to be one of the most well-documented examples of the complex intersection of race, class, and criminal justice in the United States. The Springfield Race Riot Of 1908 was made up of a series of violent actions initiated against African Americans by a mob of about 5,000 white Americans and European immigrants, in Springfield, Illinois, between August 14-16, 1908. In 2008, an NPR report on the centenary of the race riot said that the fact of its taking place in a Northern state, specifically in "The Land of Lincoln," demonstrated that blacks were mistreated across the country, not just in the South. They described the event as a proxy for the story of race in America. Sixteen deaths were documented as a result of the riot, and more persons may have died: nine black residents died, and seven white residents who were associated with the mob; five were killed by state militia and two committed suicide. It was mistakenly reported for decades that blacks were responsible for white deaths, and that more whites than blacks had died. Personal and property damages were suffered overwhelmingly by blacks, as dozens of black homes and businesses were destroyed, as well as three white-owned businesses of suspected black sympathizers. As a result of the riot, numerous blacks left Springfield, but it is unclear how many moved away permanently. The riot was a catalyst for the formation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), organized to work on civil rights for African Americans. The National Negro Committee, formed in New York City on May 31 - June 1, 1909, was created in direct response to the Springfield Race Riot Of 1908 against the black community in Springfield, Illinois. Prominent black activists and white progressives called for a national conference to discuss African American civil rights. They met to address the social, economic, and political rights of African Americans. It was this meeting that served as the predecessor to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as the National Negro Committee ceased to exist on May 12, 1910, again in New York City, when it transformed into the NAACP during the National Negro Committe's second and last meeting.

August 15-17, 1969: Counterculture Of The 1960s: The Hippie Movement: Counterculture Festivals: Music Festivals: Pop Festivals: Rock Festivals: The Woodstock Music And Art Fair (The Woodstock Festival, Woodstock): -- The Woodstock Music And Art Fair continues its second of three days in upstate New York, a music festival featuring some of the top rock musicians of the era which attracted an audience of more than 400,000. Scheduled for August 15-17 on a dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains of southern New York State, northwest of New York City, it ran over to Monday, August 18. Billed as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace and Music", it was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre (240 ha; 0.94 sq mi) dairy farm near the hamlet of White Lake in the town of Bethel. Located in Sullivan County, Bethel is 43 miles (70 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock in adjoining Ulster County. During the sometimes rainy weekend, 32 acts performed outdoors. It is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history, as well as the definitive nexus for the larger counterculture generation. The event was captured in the Academy Award-winning 1970 documentary movie Woodstock, an accompanying soundtrack album, and Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock", which commemorated the event and became a major hit for both Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and Matthews Southern Comfort. Joni Mitchell said, "Woodstock was a spark of beauty" where half-a-million kids "saw that they were part of a greater organism". In 2017, the festival site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

August 16, 1792: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The French Revolution: The French First Republic (French: Premiere Republique; Revolutionary France, Officially The French Republic [French: Republique Francaise]): The National Convention (French: Convention Nationale): The Reign Of Terror: (French: La Terreur, "The Terror"): The Paris Commune (1789-1795) (French: Commune De Paris): The Revolutionary Tribunal (French: Tribunal Revolutionnaire) (The Popular Tribunal): -- Maximilien De Robespierre presents the petition of the insurrectionary Paris Commune to the Legislative Assembly, the legislature of France from October 1, 1791 to September 20, 1792, which demanded the formation of a revolutionary tribunal, a court instituted by the National Convention, the first government of the French Revolution, for the trial of political offenders; it eventually became one of the most powerful engines of The Reign Of Terror, which by the time of the Fall of Maximilien Robespierre on July 28, 1794 resulted in 16,594 official death sentences in France, of which 2,639 were in Paris. The Paris Commune of The French Revolution was the government of Paris from 1789 until 1795. Established in the Hotel de Ville just after the storming of the Bastille, it consisted of 144 delegates elected by the 60 divisions of the city. Before its formal establishment, there had been much popular discontent on the streets of Paris over who represented the true Commune, and who had the right to rule the Parisian people. The first mayor was Jean Sylvain Bailly, a relatively moderate member of The Feuillants Club (French Club Des Feuillants) (The Society Of The Friends Of The Constitution [French: Societe Des Amis De La Constitution]), whose members were known as Feuillants (French: derived from Latin word for "Leaves"), members of a political group that emerged during the French Revolution who represented the last and most vigorous attempt of the moderate constitutional monarchists to steer the course of the revolution away from the radical Jacobins. The assembly split between the Feuillants on the right, who sought to preserve the position of the king and supported the proposed plan of the National Constituent Assembly for a constitutional monarchy; and the radical Jacobins on the left, who wished to press for a continuation of the overthrow of Louis XVI. It represented the last and most vigorous attempt of the moderate constitutional monarchists to steer the course of the revolution away from the radical Jacobins.

The 1929 Arab Riots In Palestine, or the Buraq Uprising (Arabic: Thawrat al-Buraq), also known as the 1929 Massacres, (Hebrew: Meora'ot Tarpat, lit. Events of 5689 Anno Mundi) refers to a series of demonstrations and riots in late August 1929 when a long-running dispute between Muslims and Jews over access to the Western Wall in Jerusalem escalated into violence. The riots took the form, in the most part, of attacks by Arabs on Jews accompanied by destruction of Jewish property. During the week of riots from 23 to 29 August, 133 Jews were killed and between 198-241 others were injured, a large majority of whom were unarmed and were murdered in their homes by Arabs, while at least 116 Arabs were killed and at least 232 were injured, mostly by the British police while trying to suppress the riots, although around 20 were killed by Jewish attacks or indiscriminate British gunfire. During the riots, 17 Jewish communities were evacuated. The British-appointed Shaw Commission found that the fundamental cause of the violence "without which in our opinion disturbances either would not have occurred or would not have been little more than a local riot, is the Arab feeling of animosity and hostility towards the Jews consequent upon the disappointment of their political and national aspirations and fear for their economic future."It also attributed the cause as being Arab fears of Jewish immigrants "not only as a menace to their livelihood but as a possible overlord of the future." Avraham Sela described the riots as "unprecedented in the history of the Arab-Jewish conflict in Palestine, in duration, geographical scope and direct damage to life and property."

August 16, 1913: #BOTD: Menachem Begin, Belarusian-Israeli terrorist, soldier, politician, 6th Prime Minister of Israel, Nobel Prize laureate (d. March 9, 1992) is #born Mieczyslaw Biegun (Russian: Menakhem Volfovich) in Brest-Litovsk, Poland. Begin was a founder of Likud, officially the Likud - National Liberal Movement, an Israeli centre-right to right-wing political party. Before the creation of the state of Israel, he was the leader of the Zionist militant group Irgun, the Revisionist breakaway from the larger Jewish paramilitary organization Haganah. He proclaimed a revolt on February 1, 1944, against the British mandatory government, which was opposed by the Jewish Agency. As head of the Irgun, he targeted the British in Palestine. Later, the Irgun fought the Arabs during The 1947-48 Civil War In Mandatory Palestine, and as its chief, Begin was cited by British government as "leader of the notorious terrorist organisation" and banned from entering the United Kingdom. Begin ordered a terrorist attack on the British military and administrative headquarters at The King David Hotel following a request from the Haganah, although the Haganah's permission was later rescinded. The King David Hotel Bombing resulted in the destruction of the building's southern wing, and killed 91 people, mostly British, Arabs, and Jews Despite this, Begin was elected to the first Knesset, as head of Herut, a major right-wing nationalist party he founded in 1948 (merged in 1988 with Likud) that was opposed by various notable Jewish figures as a fascist and terrorist party. He was at first on the political fringe, embodying the opposition to the Israeli establishment and government led by Mapai, a democratic socialist political party that was the dominant force in Israeli politics until its merger into the modern-day Israeli Labor Party in 1968. Begin remained in opposition in the eight consecutive elections since the founding of Israel (except for a national unity government around the Six-Day War), but over time, he became more acceptable to the political center. His 1977 electoral victory and premiership ended three decades of Labor Party political dominance. Begin's most significant achievement as Prime Minister was the signing of a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979, for which he and Anwar Sadat shared the Nobel Prize for Peace. In the wake of the Camp David Accords, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) withdrew from the Sinai Peninsula, which was captured from Egypt in the Six-Day War. Later, Begin's government promoted the construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Begin authorized the bombing of the Osirak nuclear plant in Iraq and the invasion of Lebanon in 1982 to fight PLO strongholds there, igniting the 1982 Lebanon War. As Israeli military involvement in Lebanon deepened, and the Sabra and Shatila massacre, carried out by Christian Phalangist militia allies of the Israelis, shocked world public opinion, Begin grew increasingly isolated. As IDF forces remained mired in Lebanon and the economy suffered from hyperinflation, the public pressure on Begin mounted. Depressed by the death of his wife Aliza in November 1982, he gradually withdrew from public life, until his resignation in October 1983. On March 3, 1992, Begin suffered a severe heart attack in his apartment, and was rushed to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, where he was put in the intensive care unit. Begin arrived there unconscious and paralyzed on the left side of his body. His condition slightly improved following treatment, and he regained consciousness after 20 hours. For the next six days, Begin remained in serious condition. A pacemaker was implanted in his chest to stabilize his heartbeat on March 5. Begin was too frail to overcome the effects of the heart attack, and his condition began to rapidly deteriorate on March 9 at about 3:15 AM. An emergency team of doctors and nurses attempted to resuscitate his failing heart. His children were notified of his condition and immediately rushed to his side. Begin died at 3:30 AM, aged 78. His death was announced an hour and a half later. Shortly before 6:00 AM, the hospital rabbi arrived at his bedside to say the Kaddish prayer. Begin's funeral took place in Jerusalem that afternoon. His coffin was carried four kilometers from the Sanhedria Funeral Parlor to Mount of Olives in a funeral procession attended by thousands of people. In accordance with his wishes, Begin was given a simple Jewish burial ceremony rather than a state funeral and buried on The Mount Of Olives in the Jewish Cemetery there. He had asked to be buried there instead of Mount Herzl, where most Israeli leaders are laid to rest, because he wanted to be buried beside his wife Aliza, as well as Meir Feinstein of The Irgun and Moshe Barazani of The Lehi, who committed suicide together in jail while awaiting execution by the British. An estimated 75,000 mourners were present at the funeral. Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, President Chaim Herzog, all cabinet ministers present in Israel, Supreme Court justices, Knesset members from most parties and a number of foreign ambassadors attended the funeral. Former members of The Irgun High Command served as pallbearers.

A new constitution is established with aid from the U.S. Embassy. Duong Van Minh (Vietnamese: Zian Van Min; 16 February 1916 - 6 August 2001), popularly known as Big Minh, was a South Vietnamese politician and a senior general in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and a politician during the presidency of Ngo Dinh Diem. In 1963, he became chief of a military junta after leading a coup in which Diem was assassinated. Minh lasted only three months before being toppled by Nguyen Khanh, but assumed power again as the 4th and last President of South Vietnam in April 1975, two days before surrendering to North Vietnamese forces. In the last few years of his life, he lived in Pasadena, California, USA with his daughter, Mai Duong. Minh kept his silence, did not talk about the events in Vietnam, and did not produce a memoir. On 5 August 2001, Minh fell at his home in Pasadena, California. He was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where he died the following night at the age of 85. Nguyen Khanh (November 8, 1927 - January 11, 2013) was a South Vietnamese military officer and Army of the Republic of Vietnam general who served in various capacities as head of state and prime minister of South Vietnam while at the head of a military junta from January 1964 until February 1965. He was involved in or against many coup attempts, failed and successful, from 1960 until his defeat and exile from South Vietnam in 1965. Khanh lived out his later years with his family, in exile in the United States, and died of pneumonia and end-stage renal failure at a hospital in San Jose, California, on January 11, 2013.

August 16, 1966: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War In Asia: The Indochina Wars: The Vietnam War (The Second Indochina War, The Vietnam Conflict, The Resistance War Against America): The United States In The Vietnam War: Opposition To United States Involvement In The Vietnam War: Anti-Communism In The United States: The Red Scare: The Second Red Scare: The House Committee On Un-American Activities (HCUA) (The House Un-American Activities Committee [HUAC]): -- The House Un-American Activities Committee begins investigations of Americans who they have determined aided the Viet Cong, intending to introduce legislation to make these activities illegal. Hundreds of anti-war demonstrators disrupt the meeting and 50 people are arrested. In the wake of the downfall of McCarthy (who never served in the House, nor on HUAC; he was a U.S. Senator), the prestige of HUAC began a gradual decline in the late 1950s. By 1959, the committee was being denounced by former President Harry S. Truman as the "most un-American thing in the country today". In May 1960, the committee held hearings in San Francisco City Hall which led to the infamous riot on May 13, when city police officers fire-hosed protesting students from the UC Berkeley, Stanford, and other local colleges, and dragged them down the marble steps beneath the rotunda, leaving some seriously injured. Soviet affairs expert William Mandel, who had been subpoenaed to testify, angrily denounced the committee and the police in a blistering statement which was aired repeatedly for years thereafter on Pacifica Radio station KPFA in Berkeley. An anti-communist propaganda film, Operation Abolition, was produced by the committee from subpoenaed local news reports, and shown around the country during 1960 and 1961. In response, the Northern California ACLU produced a film called Operation Correction, which discussed falsehoods in the first film. Both films are available in their entirety on EarthStation1.com's "Fight Against Fanaticism!" two-disc DVD set. The committee lost considerable prestige as the 1960s progressed, increasingly becoming the target of political satirists and the defiance of a new generation of political activists. HUAC subpoenaed Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman of the Yippies in 1967, and again in the aftermath of the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The Yippies used the media attention to make a mockery of the proceedings. Rubin came to one session dressed as a Revolutionary War soldier and passed out copies of the United States Declaration of Independence to those in attendance. Rubin then "blew giant gum bubbles, while his co-witnesses taunted the committee with Nazi salutes". Rubin attended another session dressed as Santa Claus. On another occasion, police stopped Hoffman at the building entrance and arrested him for wearing the United States flag. Hoffman quipped to the press, "I regret that I have but one shirt to give for my country", paraphrasing the last words of revolutionary patriot Nathan Hale; Rubin, who was wearing a matching Viet Cong flag, shouted that the police were communists for not arresting him as well. Hearings in August 1966 called to investigate anti-Vietnam War activities were disrupted by hundreds of protesters, many from the Progressive Labor Party. The committee faced witnesses who were openly defiant. According to The Harvard Crimson, "In the fifties, the most effective sanction was terror. Almost any publicity from HUAC meant the 'blacklist'. Without a chance to clear his name, a witness would suddenly find himself without friends and without a job. But it is not easy to see how in 1969, a HUAC blacklist could terrorize an SDS activist. Witnesses like Jerry Rubin have openly boasted of their contempt for American institutions. A subpoena from HUAC would be unlikely to scandalize Abbie Hoffman or his friends." In an attempt to reinvent itself, the committee was renamed as the Internal Security Committee in 1969. The House Committee on Internal Security was formally terminated on January 14, 1975, the day of the opening of the 94th Congress. The committee's files and staff were transferred on that day to the House Judiciary Committee.

Angry supporters of the bank gathered outside the Executive Mansion that evening and burned an effigy of Tyler, who had assumed the presidency on April 4 upon the death of President William Henry Harrison. The rioters hurled stones at the residence and shot guns into the air before setting the effigy on fire. Tyler, the nation's 10th president, was the first chief executive to be born after the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. He was also the first vice president to assume the office of president upon the death of his predecessor. Despite misgivings by members of his inherited Cabinet, Tyler took the presidential oath of office, initiating a custom that has governed all future successions. Nonetheless, Tyler's opponents usually referred to him as "the acting president" or "His Accidency." The protesters, however, were mainly members of the political party Tyler had affiliated with, the recently organized Whigs, who controlled Congress at the time. Tyler had been chosen to participate in an audit of the Second Bank in 1818 as part of a five-man committee, and was appalled by corruption he perceived within the bank. He argued for the revocation of the bank charter, although Congress rejected any such proposal. The leading issue in the 1832 presidential election was the recharter of the bank, which both presidential candidates Tyler and Jackson both opposed. Congress voted to recharter the bank in July 1832, and Jackson vetoed the bill for both constitutional and practical reasons. Tyler voted to sustain the veto and endorsed the president in his successful bid for re-election. As president, Tyler inherited an economy marred by wildly fluctuating currency valuations and rampant bank fraud. Breaking with the Whigs, Tyler declared the U.S. bank a threat to states' rights, enraging the bank's congressional backers. Before issuing his banking veto, Tyler had sought to forge a compromise. However, Sen. Henry Clay of Kentucky, the founder and leader of the Whigs, wouldn't budge. In retaliation for the veto, the Whigs expelled Tyler from its party ranks. When informed that a Cabinet majority had dictated policy in the prior Harrison administration, Tyler responded by saying: "I beg your pardon, gentlemen; I am very glad to have in my Cabinet such able statesmen as you have proved yourselves to be. And I shall be pleased to avail myself of your counsel and advice. But I can never consent to being dictated to as to what I shall or shall not do... I, as president, shall be responsible for my administration. I hope to have your hearty co-operation in carrying out its measures. So long as you see fit to do this, I shall be glad to have you with me. When you think otherwise, your resignations will be accepted." All the members of Tyler's Cabinet resigned save for except Daniel Webster, the Secretary Of State, who left in 1842. Until its demise in 1836, the bank, operating as a private corporation with public duties, the bank handled all fiscal transactions for the U.S. government. It was accountable to Congress and the U.S. Treasury. Twenty percent of its capital was held by the federal government, the bank's single largest stockholder. Some 4,000 private investors held their remaining 80 percent of the bank's capital, including about 1,000 Europeans. Most of the shares were in the hands of a few hundred wealthy Americans - the "1 percent" of that era. In its time, the institution was the world's largest financial corporation.

August 16, 1927: Aviation: The History Of Aviation: Racing: Air Racing: The Dole Air Race (The Dole Derby): -- The Dole Air Race begins, also known as the Dole Derby, a deadly air race across the Pacific Ocean from Oakland, California to Honolulu in the Territory of Hawaii, during which six out of the eight participating planes crash or disappear. There were originally eighteen official and unofficial entrants; fifteen of those drew for starting positions, and of those fifteen, two were disqualified, two withdrew, and three aircraft crashed before the race, resulting in three deaths. Eight aircraft ultimately participated in the start of the race. Only two successfully arrived in Hawaii; Woolaroc, a Travel Air 5000 piloted by Arthur C. Goebel and William V. Davis, arrived after a 26 1/4-hour flight, leading the runner-up Aloha, a Breese-Wilde 5 Monoplane, piloted by Martin Jensen and Paul Schluter, by two hours. Of the unsuccessful six aircraft, two crashed on takeoff, two were forced to return for repairs, and two went missing during the race (Golden Eagle and Miss Doran). One of the aircraft that was repaired took off again to search for the missing aircraft several days later and also vanished over the sea (Dallas Spirit). In all, before, during, and after the race, ten lives were lost and six airplanes were lost or damaged beyond repair.

August 16, 1913: Naval History: The History Of The Royal Navy: The Battlecruiser HMS Queen Mary: -- Completion of the Royal Navy battlecruiser HMS Queen Mary, the last battlecruiser built by the Royal Navy before World War I. The sole member of her class, Queen Mary shared many features with the Lion-class battlecruisers, including her eight 13.5-inch (343 mm) guns. She was completed in 1913 and participated in the Battle Of Heligoland Bight as part of the Grand Fleet in 1914. Like most of the modern British battlecruisers, she never left the North Sea during the war. As part of the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron, she attempted to intercept a German force that bombarded the North Sea coast of England in December 1914, but was unsuccessful. She was refitting in early 1915 and missed the Battle of Dogger Bank in January, but participated in the largest fleet action of the war, the Battle of Jutland in mid-1916. She was hit twice by the German battlecruiser Derfflinger during the early part of the battle and her magazines exploded shortly afterwards, sinking the ship. Her wreck was discovered in 1991 and rests in pieces, some of which are upside down, on the floor of the North Sea. Queen Mary is designated as a protected place under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986 as it is the grave of 1,266 officers and men.

August 16, 1920: Soviet War: The Battle Of Warsaw (1920) (Polish: Bitwa Warszawska; Russian: Varshavskaya Bitva) (The Miracle On The Vistula (Polish: Cud Nad Wisla): The Battle Of Radzymin (1920) (Polish: Bitwa Pod Radzyminem): -- The Battle of Radzymin concludes; the Soviet Red Army is forced to turn away from Warsaw. The Battle of Radzymin (Polish: Bitwa pod Radzyminem) occurs near the town of Radzymin, some 20 kilometres (12 mi) north-east of Warsaw, between August 13 and 16, 1920. Along with the Battle of Ossow and the Polish counteroffensive from the Wieprz River area, this engagement was a key part of what later became known as the Battle Of Warsaw. It also proved to be one of the bloodiest and most intense battles of the Polish-Soviet War. The first phase of the battle began on August 13 with a frontal assault by the Red Army on the Praga bridgehead. The Soviet forces captured Radzymin on August 14 and breached the lines of the 1st Polish Army, which was defending Warsaw from the east. Radzymin changed hands several times in heavy combat. Foreign diplomats, with the exception of the British and Vatican ambassadors, hastily left Warsaw. The plan for the battle was straightforward for both sides. The Russians wanted to break through the Polish defences to Warsaw, while the Polish aim was to defend the area long enough for a two-pronged counteroffensive from the south, led by General Jozef Pilsudski, and north, led by General Wladyslaw Sikorski, to outflank the attacking forces. After three days of intense fighting, the corps-sized 1st Polish Army under General Franciszek Latinik managed to repel a direct assault by six Red Army rifle divisions at Radzymin and Ossow. The struggle for control of Radzymin forced General Jozef Haller, commander of the Polish Northern Front, to start the 5th Army's counterattack earlier than planned. Radzymin was recaptured on August 15, and this victory proved to be one of the turning points of the Battle Of Warsaw. The strategic counteroffensive was successful, pushing Soviet forces away from Radzymin and Warsaw and eventually crippling four Soviet armies.

August 16, 1892: #BOTD: #HBD! Otto Messmer, American cartoonist and animator, best known for his work on the Felix The Cat cartoons and comic strip produced by the Pat Sullivan studio (d. October 28, 1983) is #born Otto James Messmer to a German Catholic family in West Hoboken, New Jersey (now Union City). The extent of Messmer's role in the creation and popularity of Felix is a matter of ongoing dispute, particularly as he only laid his claim to the character after the death of Sullivan, who until that time had received the credit. Felix was the first cartoon character created and developed for the screen, as well as the first to become a licensed, mass merchandised character. Sullivan took the credit for Felix, and though Messmer directed and was the lead animator on all of the episodes he appeared in, Sullivan's name was the only onscreen credit that appeared in them. Messmer also oversaw the direction of the Felix newspaper strip, doing most of the pencils and inks on the strip until 1954. By the 1960s, Felix had been reinvented for television, and Messmer's longtime assistant Joe Oriolo (the creator of Casper the Friendly Ghost) made sure that Messmer was finally credited as the creator of Felix The Cat. Messmer continued working on the character for the rest of his life. Otto Messmer died at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, New Jersey on October 28, 1983, aged 91. He is buried at Madonna Cemetery And Mausoleum in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

August 16, 1888: #DOTD: #RIP: John Pemberton, American chemist, pharmacist, Confederate States Army veteran and Freemason, inventor of Coca-Cola (b. July 8, 1831) #dies of stomach cancer in Atlanta, Georgia, at age 57. At the time of his death, he also suffered from poverty and his worsening addiction to morphine. His body was returned to Columbus, Georgia, where he is buried at Linwood Cemetery. His grave marker is engraved with symbols showing his service in the Confederate Army and his membership as a Freemason. His son Charles continued to sell his father's formula, but six years later Charles Pemberton himself died, having succumbed to opium addiction. John Pemberton was born John Stith Pemberton in Knoxville, Georgia. In May 1886, he developed an early version of a beverage that would later become Coca-Cola, and immediately placed his first advertisement for Coca-Cola, which appeared in The Atlanta Journal. It was originally invented as a patent medicine to treat the sabre wound he sustained in April 1865, during the Battle of Columbus; his ensuing morphine addiction led him to experiment with various painkillers and toxins. In the end, this led to the recipe that later was adapted to make Coca-Cola. Pemberton sold his rights to the drink shortly before his death to businessman Asa Griggs Candler, whose marketing tactics led Coca-Cola to its dominance of the world soft-drink market throughout the 20th century, beginning on March 12, 1894, when Coca-Cola was bottled and sold for the first time in Vicksburg, Mississippi, by local soda fountain operator Joseph A. Biedenharn at his wholesale Biedenharn Candy Company building, creating thereby the soft drink bottling industry. The drink's name refers to two of its original ingredients, which were kola nuts (a source of caffeine) and coca leaves. The current formula of Coca-Cola remains a trade secret, although a variety of reported recipes and experimental recreations have been published.

August 16, 1991: Great Discoveries: Paleontology: Fossils: Dinsosaur Fossils:Tyrannosaurus Fossils: Scotty (RSM P2523.8): -- Scotty, the largest Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil ever found, the largest of any dinosaur discovered in Canada, and one of the oldest and most complete fossils of its kind (catalogued as RSM P2523.8) is discovered by Robert Gebhardt, a high school principal from Eastend, Saskatchewan, who accompanied a team of palaeontologists from the Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) on a prospective expedition into the Frenchman Formation alongside the Frenchman River Valley in southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada. The name "Scotty" came from the celebratory bottle of scotch shared by the team that had discovered and identified the bones. Although Gebhardt was only there to learn how to find and identify fossils, he uncovered a tooth and tail vertebra that the museum was able to verify belonged to a T. rex. Initially, Gebhardt thought that the visible fossil was actually ironstone. It wasn't until June 1994 that the Royal Saskatchewan Museum was able to begin the excavation, which was led and overseen by the Museum's Ron Borden, as well as resident palaeontologists Tim Tokaryk and John Storer who were with Gebhardt when he uncovered the first fossils. The bones were deeply packed in dense, iron-laden sandstone, which took more than twenty years for the team to fully remove, excavate, and assemble the majority of the skeleton, with additional trips being made to the site to retrieve smaller bones and teeth. The entire process of excavating the skeleton was also slowed down by its considerable size. When the preparation was complete in 2011, a ~65% complete T. rex skeleton was revealed. The first fossils unearthed were part of the upper body, specifically vertebra, parts of the jaw, and teeth. At the time of its discovery, the fossil was one of only 12 known T. rex skeletons of significant completion. Alongside the fossil was also found the only known T. rex coprolite (fossilized feces) in the world. Scotty now resides at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum's T. rex Discovery Centre in Eastend, Saskatchewan, Canada. In May 2019, a second mount was erected at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Regina, where the exhibit reflects the recent discoveries about the fossil.

August 16, 1928: #BOTD: #HBD! Ann Blyth, retired American actress, singer and beauty, often cast in Hollywood musicals, but also successful in dramatic roles, is #born Anne Marie Blythe (she later dropped the "e" from her first name and surname) in Mount Kisco, New York. For her performance as Veda in the 1945 Michael Curtiz film Mildred Pierce, Blyth was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She is one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood, and became the earliest living Academy Award nominee for acting upon the death of Angela Lansbury in October 2022. After her father left the family when Anne was a yong child, she, her elder sister Dorothy and their mother moved to a walk-up apartment on East 31st Street in New York City, where her mother took in ironing. Blyth performed on children's radio shows in New York for six years, making her first appearance when she was five. When she was nine, she joined the New York Children's Opera Company. Blyth's first acting role was on Broadway in Lillian Hellman's Watch on the Rhine (from 1941 until 1942). She played the part of Paul Lukas's daughter, Babette. The play ran for 378 performances, and won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. After the New York run, the play went on tour, and while performing at the Biltmore Theatre in Los Angeles, Blyth was offered a contract with Universal Studios. Blyth began her acting career initially as "Anne Blyth", but changed the spelling of her first name to "Ann" at the beginning of her film career. She made her film debut in 1944, teamed with Donald O'Connor and Peggy Ryan in the teenager musical Chip Off the Old Block (1944). She followed it with two similar films: The Merry Monahans (1944), with O'Connor and Ryan again, and Babes on Swing Street (1944) with Ryan. She had a supporting role in the bigger-budgeted Bowery to Broadway (1944), a showcase of Universal musical talent. On loan to Warner Brothers, Blyth was cast "against type" as Veda Pierce, the scheming, ungrateful daughter of Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce (1945). Her dramatic portrayal won her outstanding reviews, and she received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Blyth was only 16 when she made the Michael Curtiz film. Crawford won the Best Actress award for that film. After Mildred Pierce, Blyth sustained a broken back while tobogganing in Snow Valley and was not able to fully capitalize on the film's success. She recovered and made two films for Mark Hellinger's unit at Universal: Swell Guy (1946), with Sonny Tufts, and Jules Dassin's Brute Force (1947) with Burt Lancaster. During this time, her father died. Universal lent her to MGM to play the female lead in Killer McCoy (1947), a boxing film with Mickey Rooney that was a box-office hit. Back at Universal, Blyth did a film noir with Charles Boyer and Jessica Tandy, A Woman's Vengeance (1948), affecting a British accent. She was then cast in the part of Regina Hubbard in Lillian Hellman's Another Part of the Forest (1948), an adaptation of the 1946 play wherein Regina had been played by Patricia Neal. The play was a prequel to The Little Foxes. Blyth followed it with Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948) with William Powell. She was top-billed in Red Canyon (1949), a Western with Howard Duff. Universal lent Blyth to Paramount to play the female lead in Top o' the Morning (1949), as Barry Fitzgerald's daughter, who is romanced by Bing Crosby. Back at Universal, she was teamed with Robert Montgomery in Once More, My Darling (1949), meaning she had to drop out of Desert Legion. She did a comedy with Robert Cummings, Free for All (1949). In April 1949, Universal suspended her for refusing a lead role in Abandoned (1949). Gale Storm played it. Universal lent her to Sam Goldwyn star opposite Farley Granger in Our Very Own (1950). Universal gave her top billing in a romantic comedy, Katie Did It (1951). Blyth was borrowed by MGM for The Great Caruso (1951) opposite Mario Lanza, which was a massive box-office hit. Back at Universal she made Thunder on the Hill (1951) with Claudette Colbert and had the female lead in The Golden Horde (1951) with David Farrar. 20th Century Fox borrowed her to star opposite Tyrone Power in I'll Never Forget You (1952), a last-minute replacement for Constance Smith. She appeared on TV in Family Theater in an episode called "The World's Greatest Mother" alongside Ethel Barrymore. Universal teamed Blyth with Gregory Peck in The World in His Arms (1952). She was top-billed in the comedy Sally and Saint Anne (1952) and was borrowed by RKO for One Minute to Zero (1952), a Korean War drama with Robert Mitchum, wherein she replaced Claudette Colbert, who came down with pneumonia. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had been interested in Blyth since she worked at the studio on The Great Caruso. In December 1952, she left Universal and signed a long-term contract with MGM. She was the leading lady in All the Brothers Were Valiant (1953) with Stewart Granger and Robert Taylor, stepping in for Elizabeth Taylor, who had to drop out due to pregnancy. On television, Blyth appeared in The Lux Video Theatre version of A Place in the Sun with John Derek and Marilyn Erskine. Back at MGM, Blyth had the lead in the remake of Rose Marie (1954) with Howard Keel, which earned over 5M USD, but lost money due to high costs. Plans to remake other MacDonald-Eddy films (such as The Girl of the Golden West) were discussed, but did not work out. Blyth was meant to be reteamed with Lanza in The Student Prince (1954), but he was fired from the studio and replaced in the picture by Edmund Purdom; the film did well at the box office. Blyth and Purdom were reunited in a swashbuckler, The King's Thief (1955), with David Niven. She was teamed again with Keel on the musical Kismet (1955); despite strong reviews, the film was a financial flop. She was named as the female lead in The Adventures of Quentin Durward (1955), but Kay Kendall was cast in the film, instead. For her final picture at the studio, MGM put Blyth in Slander (1957) opposite Van Johnson. Sidney Sheldon cast Blyth in The Buster Keaton Story (1957) with O'Connor at Paramount. Warner Bros. then cast her in the title role of The Helen Morgan Story (1957) directed by Michael Curtiz with Paul Newman. Blyth reportedly beat 40 other actors for the part. Though her voice was more like the original Helen Morgan, her vocals were dubbed by Gogi Grant. That soundtrack was much more successful than the film itself. Blyth made no further films. In 1957, she sued Benedict Bogeaus for $75,000 for not making the film Conquest. From the late 1950s into the 1970s, Blyth worked in musical theater and summer stock, starring in the shows The King and I, The Sound of Music, and Show Boat. She also appeared sporadically on television, including co-starring opposite James Donald in the 1960 adaptation of A.J. Cronin's novel, The Citadel. She guest-starred on episodes of The DuPont Show with June Allyson, The Dick Powell Theatre, Saints and Sinners, Wagon Train (several episodes), The Twilight Zone ("Queen of the Nile"), Burke's Law, Kraft Suspense Theatre, Insight, and The Name of the Game. Several of these appearances were for Four Star Television, with whom Blyth signed a multiple-appearance contract. Blyth became a spokesperson for Hostess Cupcakes. Her last television appearances were in episodes of Switch and Quincy, M.E. in 1983 and Murder, She Wrote in 1985. She then officially retired. For her contributions to the film industry, Blyth has a motion picture star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6733 Hollywood Boulevard. Blyth performed live in concert tours for many years with Harper MacKay serving as her accompanist and music director. In the December 1952 edition of Motion Picture and Television Magazine, Blyth stated in an interview that she was a Republican who had endorsed Dwight D. Eisenhower for president, the month before during the 1952 presidential election. In 1953, Blyth married obstetrician James McNulty, brother of singer Dennis Day, who had introduced them. The bridesmaids were actresses Joan Leslie, Jane Withers, and Betty Lynn. The couple received a special commendation from the Pope. After her marriage, Blyth took a hiatus from her career to focus on raising their five children. In 1955, an armed man who had written her fan letters was arrested near her house. In 1973, McNulty and she, both Catholics, were accorded the honorific rank of Lady and Knight of the Holy Sepulchre in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Cooke. In 2003, she was the recipient of the Living Legacy Award by the Women's International Center in 2003. Blyth was widowed when Dr. McNulty died on May 13, 2007, in La Jolla, California, aged 89.

August 16, 1928: #BOTD: #HBD! Eydie Gorme, American multiple award winning singer, actress and beauty who performed solo as well as with her husband, Steve Lawrence, in popular ballads and swing (d. August 10, 2013) is #born Edith Gormezano in the Bronx to Turkish Sephardic Jewish immigrant parents Nessim Hasdai Gormezano and Fortuna "Fortunee" Gormezano. The Gormezanos spoke several languages at home, including Ladino (also referred to as Judaeo-Spanish). Due to its close relationship with Castilian Spanish, Gorme was able to speak and sing in Spanish. She was distantly related (by marriage) to Neil Sedaka. She was awarded multiple awards: Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Vocal Group, We Got Us with Steve Lawrence, 1960; Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Performance, "If He Walked Into My Life", 1966; Society of Singers Lifetime Achievement Award, 1995; Inducted with Steve Lawrence into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, winning the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award, 1995; Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Music or Comedy Special, Our Love Is Here to Stay with Steve Lawrence, 1976; Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Music or Comedy Special, Steve and Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin with Steve Lawrence, 1979. Her husband Steve Lawrence, who continues to perform as a solo act, began appeared with her regularly on Tonight Starring Steve Allen as "Steve And Eydie" in the mid-1950s. She attended William Howard Taft High School, where one of her classmates was Stanley Kubrick. After graduating from high school, she attended night classes at City College. After high school, Gorme worked as a translator, but on weekends she sang in a band led by Ken Greengrass. She appeared on the Spanish-language radio program Cita Con Eydie (A Date with Eydie), changing her name from "Edith" to "Edie" and then "Eydie" because people mispronounced "Edie". She considered changing her last name, but her mother told her, "It's bad enough that you're in show business. How will the neighbors know if you're ever a success?" Gorme sang with the Tommy Tucker band for two months in 1950, followed by a year with Tex Beneke's band. She signed as a solo act with Coral Records in 1952 and released her first single, "That Night of Heaven". She was hired by The Tonight Show in its early days with Steve Allen and formed a duo with another one of its staff singers, Steve Lawrence. As The Tonight Show was beginning to broadcast across the country in 1954, the duo released their first single, "Make Yourself Comfortable/I've Gotta Crow". Gorme had her first chart hit, "Too Close for Comfort", in 1956 after moving from Coral to ABC-Paramount Records. Two more hits followed. "Mama, Teach Me to Dance" and "Love Me Forever" reached the Top 40 singles chart while her albums Eydie Gorme and Eydie Swings the Blues reached the Top 20 albums chart. In 1957, Gorme and Lawrence were married, and several months later they hosted Steve Allen Presents the Steve Lawrence-Eydie Gorme Show after Allen retired from The Tonight Show. Three more singles by Gorme and two more albums became chart hits. In 1960 they sang in clubs and released We Got Us, their first album as a duo. They received a Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Vocal Group for the title track from the album. Gorme recorded "Yes My Darling Daughter" for Columbia Records, and it reached the Top Ten in the UK. In 1963, she reached the Top Ten in the U.S. with "Blame It on the Bossa Nova". The song earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Vocal Performance and was certified gold after selling one million copies. The album Blame It on the Bossa Nova entered the Top 40 with four more hit singles during the same year. Two were recorded as the duo Steve & Eydie. She recorded the Spanish albums Amor and More Amor with the Trio Los Panchos. Then she turned to show tunes. "If He Walked Into My Life" was an Easy Listening hit in 1966 and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Steve and Eydie moved on to Broadway, starring in the musical Golden Rainbow based on the play A Hole in the Head. "How Could I Be So Wrong" by Gorme, which was performed in the musical, was a hit on the Easy Listening chart. The musical had a successful one-year run. Steve and Eydie signed to RCA Victor and released a pair of albums while Gorme had another hit with the title track and album Tonight I'll Say a Prayer in 1970. Their last hit on the pop chart was the song "We Can Make It Together" with the Osmonds in 1973. Gorme was successful in the Latin music market and internationally through albums she recorded in Spanish with the Trio Los Panchos. Her first recording with Los Panchos came about after the popular group with members from Mexico and Puerto Rico, composed of Alfredo Gil, Chucho Navarro, and Johnny Albino, saw her perform at Manhattan's Club Copacabana late in 1963. Gorme had achieved international fame from the song "Blame it on the Bossa Nova", which sold 250,000 copies in Spanish in addition to sales in English. Los Panchos were the top bolero singers in Latin America, so when they suggested a recording Columbia agreed. In 1964, Columbia released the album Amor, which spent 22 weeks on the charts. The song "Sabor a Mi" became one of Gorme's signature tunes. In 1965, a sequel appeared called More Amor, later reissued as Cuatro Vidas. Her last album with Los Panchos was Navidad Means Christmas (1966), later reissued as Blanca Navidad. She recorded other Spanish albums in her career, including the Grammy-nominated La Gorme (1976). Muy Amigos/Close Friends (1977), a duet collection with Puerto Rican singer Danny Rivera, also received a Grammy nomination. Steve and Eydie performed a tribute to George Gershwin on their television special Our Love Is Here to Stay, which won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Music or Comedy Special. Two years later they sang on Steve and Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin and again won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Music or Comedy Special. In 1989 they started the record label GL Music. They sang with Frank Sinatra on his seventieth-birthday tour and on his album Duets II (1994). They recorded a cover version of the song "Black Hole Sun" by the rock band Soundgarden for the album Lounge-A-Palooza (1997). As the twenty-first century arrived, the couple announced plans to reduce their touring, starting a One More for the Road Tour in 2002. In 2006, Gorme became a blogger. In November 2009, after his wife retired, Lawrence embarked on a solo music tour. Gorme and Lawrence had two sons. David Nessim Lawrence (b. 1960) is an ASCAP Award-winning composer who composed the score for High School Musical. Michael Robert Lawrence (1962-1986) died at the age of 23 of ventricular fibrillation from an undiagnosed heart condition. Gorme and Lawrence were in Atlanta, Georgia at the time of their son's death, having performed at the Fox Theater the night before. Frank Sinatra, a family friend, sent his private plane to fly the couple to New York where David had been attending school. After their son's death, Gorme and Lawrence suspended touring for a year. Eydie Gorme died six days before her 85th birthday, at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center in Las Vegas after a brief, undisclosed illness. She is interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Los Angeles, California. Her husband Steve Lawrence issued a statement: "Eydie has been my partner on stage and in my life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing. While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time."

August 16, 1958: #BOTD: #HBD! Madonna, American singer, songwriter, actress, producer, director and businesswoman, known for pushing the boundaries of songwriting in mainstream popular music and for the imagery she uses onstage and in music videos, referred to as the "Queen Of Pop" since the 1980s, is #born Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone in Bay City, Michigan, to Catholic parents Madonna Louise (nee Fortin) Ciccone of French-Canadian descent and Silvio Anthony "Tony" Ciccone whose parents were Italian emigrants from Pacentro. Madonna is often cited as an influence by other artists. Born and raised in Michigan, Madonna moved to New York City in 1978 to pursue a career in modern dance. After performing as a drummer, guitarist, and vocalist in the rock bands Breakfast Club and Emmy, Madonna signed with Sire Records in 1982 and released her eponymous debut album the next year. She followed it with a series of successful albums, including global bestsellers Like a Virgin (1984) and True Blue (1986) as well as Grammy Award winners Ray of Light (1998) and Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005).
