During a televised interview, Popov recounted these events. FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover forwarded this information to Army and Navy intelligence who, either due to its not being read or for reasons of their own, took no action. Hoover distrusted Popov because he knew Popov was a double agent, although MI6 had briefed the FBI in New York City of his activities and forewarned them that he would be arriving, and disapproved of his womanizing and high-life playboy lifestyle. Popov himself said Hoover was quite suspicious and distrustful of him, and when Hoover discovered Popov had brought a woman from New York State to Florida, he even went so far, incredibly, as to threaten to have him arrested under the Mann Act (which act made it a felony to engage in interstate or foreign commerce transport of "any woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose") if he did not leave the US immediately.

August 12, 1953: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War (1953-1962): Nuclear Warfare: Nuclear Weapons Testing: Soviet Nuclear Warfare: Soviet Nuclear Weapons Testing: The Soviet Atomic Bomb Project: RDS-6s (From The Soviet Codename For Their Atomic Bombs Reaktivnyy Dvigatel' Spetsia, "Special Jet Engine"; American Codename: Joe 4): -- The world's first test of an employable thermonuclear weapon (i.e. not a test device (contested)) occurs when The Soviet Atomic Bomb Project detonates RDS-6s, American codename Joe 4, the first Soviet thermonuclear bomb. It detonated with a force equivalent to 400 kilotons of TNT: 10% from fission of the Uranium-235 core, 15-20% from fusion and 70 - 75% from fission of the Uranium-238 layers. It utilized a scheme in which fission and fusion fuel (lithium-6 deuteride) were "layered", a design known as the Sloika (Russian: a type of layered puff pastry) model in the Soviet Union. A ten-fold increase in explosive power was achieved by a combination of fusion energy and neutron-initiated ("boosted") fission. A similar design was earlier theorized by Edward Teller, but never tested in the U.S., as the "Alarm Clock". Scholars dispute the authenticity of RDS-6 as a thermonuclear device as it did not manage to produce a yield consistent with a true hydrogen bomb. After the successful test, the designer of the bomb, nuclear physicist (and future political dissent and activist) Andrei Sakharov proposed a more powerful version of the RDS-6s, code named RDS-6sD; however, attempts to increase the yield of the RDS-6s however proved unfeasible, and by December 1953, all research on these devices and their modified variants stopped after it was proven that thermonuclear ignition was not possible with the device. Despite the inability of the RDS-6s to be scaled into the megaton range, the detonation was still used by Soviet diplomats as leverage. The Soviets claimed that they too had a hydrogen bomb, but unlike the United States' first thermonuclear weapon, theirs was deployable by air. The United States didn't develop a deployable version of the hydrogen bomb until 1954. The first Soviet test of a "true" hydrogen bomb was on November 22, 1955 under the directive of Nikolai Bulganin (influenced by Nikita Khrushchev), code-named RDS-37. All were at Semipalatinsk Test Site, Kazakh SSR. Like RDS-6, it was a "dry" weapon, using lithium-6 deuteride instead of liquid deuterium.

August 12, 1960: The History Of Rocketry: The History Of Spaceflight: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Spage Age: The Space Race: The United States Space Program: Earth Satellites: Communications Satellites: Project Echo: Echo 1 (Echo 1A): -- Echo 1: Echo 1A, popularly known as Echo 1, the first successful communications satellite is launched by NASA, a metalized balloon satellite or "satelloon" inflated with gas after achieving orbit, which acted as a passive reflector of microwave signals. Communication signals were bounced off of it from one point on Earth to another. Within hours, a microwave transmission from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, was relayed by the satellite to Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey. It functioned as a reflector, not a transceiver; after it was placed in a low Earth orbit, a signal could be sent to it, reflected by its surface, and returned to Earth. As its shiny surface was also reflective in the range of visible light, Echo 1A was easily visible to the unaided eye over most of the Earth. The first attempt to orbit an Echo satellite (also the maiden voyage of the Thor-Delta launch vehicle) miscarried when Echo 1 lifted off from Cape Canaveral's LC-17A on the morning of May 13, 1960. The Thor stage performed properly, but during the coasting phase, the attitude control jets on the unproven Delta stage failed to ignite, sending the payload into the Atlantic Ocean instead of into orbit. Echo 1A (commonly referred to as Echo 1) was successfully put into a orbit of 944 to 1,048 miles (1,519 to 1,687 km) by another Thor-Delta. At launch, the balloon weighed 156.995 pounds (71.212 kg), including 33.34 pounds (15.12 kg) of sublimating powders of two types. According to NASA, "To keep the sphere inflated in spite of meteorite punctures and skin permeability, a make-up gas system using evaporating liquid or crystals of a subliming solid were incorporated inside the satellite." One of the powders weighed 10 pounds (4.5 kg), with a very high vapor pressure; the other had a much lower vapor pressure. Eestimates allowed the possibility that it would continue to orbit until 1964 or beyond. It ended up surviving much longer than expected, and finally reentered Earth's atmosphere and burned up on May 24, 1968. Echo was built by Gilmore Schjeldahl's G.T. Schjeldahl Company in Northfield, Minnesota. Its 30.5-meter (100 ft) diameter was made of 0.5-mil-thick (12.7 _m) biaxially oriented PET film (BoPET), metalized at a thickness of 0.2 micrometers (0.00787 mils) (a type of film commonly known by the trade name Mylar), and had a total mass of 180 kilograms (397 lb). It was used to redirect transcontinental and intercontinental telephone, radio, and television signals. It also had 107.9 MHz telemetry beacons, powered by five nickel-cadmium batteries that were charged by 70 solar cells mounted on the balloon. The spacecraft aided the calculation of atmospheric density and solar pressure, due to its large area-to-mass ratio. During the latter portion of its life, it was used to evaluate the technical feasibility of satellite triangulation.

August 12: IBM PC Day: -- August 12, 1981: The Industrial Revolution: The Third Industrial Revolution (1947-Present) (The Information Age, The Computer Age, The Digital Age, The Digital Electronics Revolution, The Silicon Age, The New Media Age, The Media Age): Product Launches: The Computer: The History Of The Computer: The History Of Computing Hardware: The History Of The Computer Industry: The History Of The Personal Computer (The History Of The PC): The IBM Personal Computer Model 5150 (The IBM Personal Computer, The IBM PC): -- The IBM Personal Computer is first released as the IBM Personal Computer Model 5150. Commonly known as the IBM PC, it is the first microcomputer released in the IBM PC model line and the basis for the IBM PC compatible de facto standard. It was created by a team of engineers and designers directed by Don Estridge in Boca Raton, Florida. The machine was based on open architecture and third-party peripherals. Over time, expansion cards and software technology increased to support it. The PC had a substantial influence on the personal computer market. The specifications of the IBM PC became one of the most popular computer design standards in the world. The only significant competition it faced from a non-compatible platform throughout the 1980s was from the Apple Macintosh product line. The majority of modern personal computers are descendants of the IBM PC. It's hard to imagine what life before 1980 was like without computers. Technology plays a vital part in modern life, and modern businesses would certainly be unable to function without computer-based systems. Before the 1980s, IBM only provided business computer systems, which were minicomputers. The company soon saw increasing competition in the market witnessed by the rising profits of competitors in the microcomputer arena. At the time, competitors were Apple, Commodore, and Tandy. Some other large companies such as Texas Instruments, Hewlett Packard, Data General, and some other big customers of IBM were starting to buy Apple computers. To enter this growing market and meet the demands of its customers and the business world, IBM decided to develop its first personal computer (PC). IBM used its existing off-the-shelf components, and the design strategy was kept totally secret. In the space of about 12 months, the IBM PC Model 5150 debuted. The price was set according to the market competition, starting at 1,565 USD with a configuration of 16kB RAM, no disk drives, and a Color Graphic Adapter. The microcomputer proved to be a runaway success for the small business market and opened the gateways for the era of personal computers. IBM worked in collaboration with Microsoft for their operating system. The IBM personal computer used a Microsoft operating system, helping to establish Microsoft's dominance in the PC market. IBM PC had a major influence on the market for personal computers. Although other companies introduced microcomputers earlier, IBM had its own significance. Its specifications and configuration became one of the most famous standards for computer design. The only notable competition IBM faced in the 1980s was the Apple Macintosh.

August 12: Milkman Day: -- A joyful occasion honoring milk delivery and the hardworking individuals who make it happen. The milkman is a traditional term for a person whose employment includes the delivery of milk. Typically, milk is delivered in bottles or cartons. People can get their dairy needs delivered directly to their door. This makes it easier for people to acquire the nutrients they require from milk regularly. A milkman is sometimes also known as a milkwoman or a milk delivery person. Milkman Day is a celebration dedicated to thanking those who make it easier for us to obtain milk. A milkman is a person who is in charge of delivering milk to people's homes, either in bottles or cartons. Other products supplied by milkmen include cheese, butter, cream, eggs, meat, and vegetables. Milk spoils quickly in various places due to a lack of good refrigeration facilities so people chose to have milk delivered to their homes regularly to reduce waste. Milkmen used to deliver churns to people's houses every day to fill their jugs before we began utilizing milk bottles. Milk delivery doors were installed in some homes and apartments, these were little wooden boxes or cupboards constructed against the outer wall of the house. It had doors on both sides, which normally had latches but not locks. Milkmen were able to place milk and goods in the box as a result of this. Residents could then safely recover their goods in their homes. Technology has enhanced the ability to keep milk for extended periods of time over time. Nowadays, more people are using refrigerators and cooling appliances in their homes. This means that milk doesn't have to be delivered every day like it was done in the past. Milkmen appeared around 1860 in Britain, when railways first started to allow fresh milk to arrive in cities from the countryside. By 1975, 94% of milk was packaged and delivered in glass bottles.

August 12: National Julienne Fries Day: -- Head out to the eatery of your choice and order some julienne fries today! Don't know what julienne fries are? Well, they're just normal fries that are cut using the julienne culinary method. This means the fries are chopped into thin pieces that are almost the size of a matchstick. Why opt for the fries, you ask? Because they are classy, crispy, and taste slightly different than the regular fries served at many restaurants. So what are you waiting for? Grab a friend and head out on a fries-eating spree! The K-tel "Veg-o-matic 2" TV commercial, which advertised "it slices, it dices, it makes delicious julienne fries" is an iconic symbol of the 1970s! Although no one knows the origin of the julienne cut, the 1877 book titled "Book of the Table," analyzes its sources and links the method to the recipe of a Julienne Soup. Simply put, julienne fries are a type of French fry that have existed for centuries. In earlier times, the method of cooking was simply frying potatoes - later on, these fried potatoes started being cut into pieces of varying sizes and thicknesses. French fries originated in Belgium and were termed 'French fries' because French was the language that was spoken in that region at that particular time. However, some people also believe French fries originated in 1789 in France where they were sold by street vendors. Another 'French fries origins story' says potatoes were first fried in Spain. No matter what the true history of the salty dish is, the fact is that fries have become a favorite of people across the world. Not only are they easy to make, but they're also filling! No wonder Charles Dickens couldn't help but mention French fries in his 1859 novel "A Tale of Two Cities." Here are more historic facts you probably didn't know about fries: they were a dime an order in McDonald's during the 1950s. By the 1980s, fries had become so popular that countries such as China, Belgium, Israel, Slovakia, and the Netherlands introduced vending machines that dispensed fries. The first machine of this kind was launched in 1982 in Australia. The machine called Mr. French Fry was designed to cook and produce french fries in under a minute.

August 12: The Glorious Twelfth (UK): -- The day that marks the beginning of the shooting season for red grouse and It is considered to be one of the busiest days in the shooting season. On this day, there is usually a large amount of game hunted and shot. The red grouse bird is usually farmed for shooting which results in their unnaturally high population. They are also susceptible to disease outbreaks which causes a fluctuation in their number yearly. Whenever the twelfth day of August falls on a Sunday, the holiday is postponed to August 13 because the English law forbids game bird shooting on Sundays. Different animals have different starts to their open seasons. Most open seasons begin on September 1. The woodcock and pheasant have their open season starting on October 1. Glorious Twelfth is observed in the United Kingdom every year on the 12th day of August. It is one of the busiest days in the shooting season as it marks the beginning of the shooting season for red grouse. It is dubbed by some to be the 'New Year's Day of Hunting' because it is the start of a 121-day shooting season of red grouse. As unreal as it may sound, the day was established in England and Wales under the Game Act in 1831 by the current legislation after overthrowing a previous law established in 1773 that forbids the hunting of game between August 12 and December 10. The new Game Act however makes it compulsory for any participant in this hunting season to have a license. In the mid-19th century, the Victorians built railways that made it easier to get up onto the moors. This was what helped establish the grouse shooting. People were able to travel more easily with all their equipment and luckily it was around the same time that the breech-loading shotgun was invented. It was a shotgun that had a prepared cartridge. These combined advancements are the factors that led to the fun time grouse shooters have come to know and enjoy today. The holiday can be considered to be a valuable source of local revenue. Research by the G.W.C.T has shown that grouse shooting supports job creation. It is estimated that grouse shooting on 140 "core" grouse estates in Scotland support about 500 jobs. Additionally, it is discovered that it contributes to the economy with about 6.7M PS worth of wages and 10.7M USD to G.D.P. The holiday and activities, in general, are beneficial to the economy at large. The Glorious Twelfth is enjoyed by shooters as a fun and challenging sport. It is not quite as fun for the red grouse. Shooting grouse as an activity has been met with a lot of controversy from animal rights activists. Some people consider it to be an unnecessary and antiquated pastime. It is believed that the activity is damaging to the grouse as a species and their surrounding environments.

August 12: World Elephant Day: -- They're intelligent. They're family-oriented. They have great memories. They are capable of feeling a wide range of deep emotions, from intense grief to joy bordering on elation, as well as empathy and stunning self-awareness. They create complex, supportive societies much like our own. Taking into consideration all of that and much, much more, what's not to love about elephants? Still, countless elephants are brutally killed every year for their ivory by greedy poachers who then leave their carcasses to rot in the sun. World Elephant Day was created in 2011 by two Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims and Thailand's Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and first celebrated on August 12, 2012. The initiative was greatly supported by film star and Star Trek legend William Shatner who narrated the documentary Return to the Forest, a fascinating 30-minute film about the reintroduction of captive Asian elephants to the wild. The motivation for the first World Elephant Day was to draw attention to the plight of these majestic creatures to populations and cultures all over the world. Due to their pleasant and intelligent nature, the world's largest land animals are loved worldwide. But, unfortunately, these magnificent creatures face multiple threats to their survival. One major issue is the ivory trade. Currently, the demand for ivory is the biggest in China, with the price of ivory often exceeding the price of gold, something that makes elephants bigger targets than ever. The economics here work firmly against the humble elephant. Extreme levels of poverty in Africa mean that people can often make a month's wages or more from the ivory of a single animal, selling it on the international market. Furthermore, the parts of the world that demand ivory, such as China, are becoming increasingly wealthy, meaning that they can pay more for tusks. These dual factors are combining to make elephant poaching one of the most lucrative activities on the plant. Habitation loss is also a danger to the world's elephant population as it deprives elephants of the hundreds of pounds of food they need every day, making it more difficult for them to breed and making it easier for poachers to track them down. Unfortunately, researchers believe that loss of habitat is the primary driver for the loss of elephants in the wild. A century ago, they numbered more than 12 million in the wild. Today, that figure may be as low as 400,000, with as many as 20,000 per year killed by poachers. Data suggest that the geographic range of elephants fell by around 30 percent between 2002 and 2011, with a similar loss of savannah for them to roam. The introduction of large parks throughout Africa has allowed habitat destruction to stabilize, but illegal poaching remains a dire threat. Circuses and tourism are also serious problems for the animals' well-being. World Elephant Day is an opportunity for everyone to get together to find ways to reduce conflict between humans and elephants. The solution probably lies in a combination of strategies. These could include land development that minimizes habitat destruction, electric fences to keep elephants away from farms, and changes in local attitudes. Luckily, an increasing number of both celebrities and politicians have become interested in the cause, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ashley Judd, and President Barack Obama.

August 12: International Youth Day: -- Focuses on the difficulties that some young people are experiencing throughout the world. Half the children between the age of six and 13 lack basic reading and math skills and childhood poverty is still a prevalent problem globally. International Youth Day was created by the UN to help draw awareness to these issues as we strive to find solutions. It's a day for reflection but also a day for taking action so get involved. There'll be many concerts, workshops and cultural events taking place so have a look at what is happening in your local area. It's an initiative that honors the traits of young people and that acknowledges the challenges that today's fledging youth face. To support the elimination of these issues it is important that the youth is able to reach the right resources for education, wellbeing, medicine and more. Scholaroo is a platform that has centralized scholarships from around the world to help the youth of the world. International Youth Day began in 2000 and was organized by the UN to recognize the input that young people make in education, community development, environmental groups, volunteering for different social projects. Our young and carefree days don't last forever. Unfortunately, many youngsters around the world face difficulties and have limited access to essential resources that can pave the way for a better future. These problems faced by youth are observed on International Youth Day on August 12. In 1965 the United Nations General Assembly began making a concerted effort to impact the youth. They endorsed the Declaration on the Promotion among Youth of the Ideals of Peace, Mutual Respect and Understanding between Peoples. They began devoting time and resources to empower the youth by recognizing up-and-coming leaders and offering them resources to meet the needs of the world. On December 17, 1999, the UN General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, and International Youth Day was formed. It was first celebrated on August 12, 2000, and ever since the day has been used to educate society. Mobilize the youth in politics, and manage resources to address global problems. The day is often accompanied by major events. In 2013 an International Youth Conference was hosted by YOUTHINK, featuring many key speakers and an awards ceremony. More recent events have been hosted by the Indian Youth Cafe in Chennai. The theme for 2019 was "transforming education." The aim of this theme was to call attention to the ways in which the participation of young people at the national and international levels is complimenting national and multilateral institutions and processes. Another important aim was to draw lessons on how their involvement in institutional politics can be increased.

August 12: National Vinyl Record Day: -- Today is your chance to go old school with your music! Spin music lovers all around the world have disagreements on a number of things, but one thing we think everyone can agree on is that vinyl records are here to stay. For those who value the quality of sound, owning physical copies of your favorite albums, or simply the nostalgia factor, it's probably safe to assume you've got your own collection of vinyl records stashed away somewhere. So now's your time to dust off the old needle and let the music take you away on a cloud of good, good, good, vibrations. Music enthusiast and founder of the first nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of the cultural influence of vinyl, Gary Freiberg created National Vinyl Record Day as a way to honor the art behind the music, collecting, and recording. Also known as a phonograph record, the first vinyl ever created was by American inventor Emile Berliner in the 1890s. By 1895, record players were released to the masses, but soon became dominated by the rise of radio. Though record players still sold well in the '30s and '40s, it wasn't until the '60s and '70s that the golden age of records reached its peak. The first cassette was released in 1962 and gave vinyl some stiff competition. Because cassettes were more portable and able to rewind, fast forward, pause, play, and stop at the touch of a button, consumers latched onto the new technology. In 1974, the development of the Compact Disc (CD) began, which nearly drained the vinyl market in 1988. From 1988 to 1991, there was a continued decline in vinyl sales, with only collectors and audiophiles remaining loyal to the format. However, since then, records have made a huge comeback for a number of reasons with what is now called "The Vinyl Revival." Today, we recognize the positive impact vinyl not only had on our lives but also on music itself. Freiberg explains that "The objective of Vinyl Record Day is to remember that, whatever we go through on a personal or national level, life has its goodness. Music is the primary vehicle to our fondest memories, Vinyl Record Day is to celebrate and remember them." This event will hopefully say, "Let's remember our favorite music, let's remember fond memories, let's celebrate our good times." And we couldn't agree more!

August 12, 1989: #DOTD: William Shockley, English-American physicist, inventor and academic, Nobel Prize laureate (b. February 13, 1910) #dies of prostate cancer in Stanford, California at the age of 79. At the time of his death, he was estranged from most of his friends and family, except his second wife, the former Emmy Lanning (1913-2007). His children reportedly learned of his death by reading his obituary in the newspaper. Shockley is interred at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto, California. William Shockley was born William Bradford Shockley Jr. in London, England. He was the manager of a research group at Bell Labs that included John Bardeen and Walter Brattain. The three scientists were jointly awarded the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics for "their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect". Partly as a result of Shockley's attempts to commercialize a new transistor design in the 1950s and 1960s, California's Silicon Valley became a hotbed of electronics innovation. In his later life, while a professor of electrical engineering at Stanford University and afterward, Shockley became widely known for his shockingly racist views and crank advocacy of eugenics.

August 12, 1914: Causes Of The European Civil War (Events Leading To The European Civil War): Causes Of World War I (Events Leading To World War I): The Guns Of August: The July Crisis: Austro-Hungarian Entry Into World War I: The British Empire's Declarations Of War On Austria-Hungary: -- The United Kingdom declares war on Austria-Hungary; the British Empire countries of Canada, Australia, Newfoundland, New Zealand and the Union Of South Africa follow suit, joined by Indian Army soldiers with its Nepalese Gurkhas and by troops from Britain's other African colonies. On July 28, 1914, in the culmination of the July Crisis, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, igniting World War I. On August 1, 1914, Austria-Hungary's ally, the German Empire, declared war on the Russian Empire, deepening the opening of World War I. On August 3, 1914, Germany declared war against France, while Romania declared its neutrality. On August 4, 1914, The German Empire began the German Invasion Of Belgium, so that they could conduct a military campaign to invade France; in response, Belgium and the British Empire declare war on Germany, and the United States declares its neutrality. On August 6, 1914, Serbia declared war on Germany, and Austria declared war on Russia. The assassination of Austrian Archduke Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 led to a month of diplomatic manoeuvring between Austria-Hungary, Germany, Russia, France and Britain, called the July Crisis. Austria-Hungary correctly believed that Serbian officials (especially the officers of the Black Hand) were involved in the plot to murder the Archduke, and wanted to finally end Serbian interference in Bosnia. On July 23, Austria-Hungary delivered to Serbia the July Ultimatum, a series of ten demands that were made intentionally unacceptable, in an effort to provoke a war with Serbia. Serbia decreed general mobilisation on the 25th. Serbia accepted all of the terms of the ultimatum except for article six, which demanded that Austrian delegates be allowed in Serbia for the purpose of participation in the investigation into the assassination. Following this, Austria broke off diplomatic relations with Serbia and, the next day, ordered a partial mobilisation. Finally, on July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. On 29 July, Russia, in support of Serbia, declared partial mobilisation against Austria-Hungary. On the 30th, Russia ordered general mobilisation. German Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg waited until the 31st for an appropriate response, when Germany declared a "state of danger of war". Kaiser Wilhelm II asked his cousin, Tsar Nicolas II, to suspend the Russian general mobilisation. When he refused, Germany issued an ultimatum demanding its mobilisation be stopped, and a commitment not to support Serbia. Another was sent to France, asking her not to support Russia if it were to come to the defence of Serbia. On August 1, after the Russian response, Germany mobilised and declared war on Russia. This also led to the general mobilisation in Austria-Hungary on August 4. The German government issued demands to France that it remain neutral as they had to decide which deployment plan to implement, it being difficult if not impossible to change the deployment whilst it was underway. The modified German Schlieffen Plan, Aufmarsch II West, would deploy 80% of the army in the west, and Aufmarsch I Ost and Aufmarsch II Ost would deploy 60% in the west and 40% in the east as this was the maximum that the East Prussian railway infrastructure could carry. The French did not respond, but sent a mixed message by ordering their troops to withdraw 10 km (6 mi) from the border to avoid any incidents, and at the same time ordered the mobilisation of her reserves. Germany responded by mobilising its own reserves and implementing Aufmarsch II West. On August 1, Wilhelm ordered General Moltke to "march the whole of the _ army to the East" after he had been wrongly informed that the British would remain neutral as long as France was not attacked. The General convinced the Kaiser that improvising the redeployment of a million men was unthinkable and that making it possible for the French to attack the Germans "in the rear" might prove disastrous. Yet Wilhelm insisted that the German army should not march into Luxembourg until he received a telegram sent by his cousin George V, who made it clear that there had been a misunderstanding. Eventually the Kaiser told Moltke, "Now you can do what you want." Germany attacked Luxembourg on August 2, and on August 3 declared war on France. On August 4, after Belgium refused to permit German troops to cross its borders into France, Germany declared war on Belgium as well. Britain declared war on Germany at 19:00 UTC on August 4, 1914 (effective from 11 pm), following an "unsatisfactory reply" to the British ultimatum that Belgium must be kept neutral.

August 12, 1762: #BOTD: George IV Of The United Kingdom, King Of The United Kingdom Of Great Britain And Ireland and King Of Hanover from January 29, 1820 until his death (d. June 26, 1830) is #born George Augustus Frederick Hanover at St James's Palace, London, England, Great Britain. At the time of his accession to the throne, he was acting as prince regent for his father, George III, having done so since February 5, 1811 during his father's final mental illness. George IV was the eldest child of King George III and Queen Charlotte. He led an extravagant lifestyle that contributed to the fashions of the Regency era, and his associates such as the dandy Beau Brummell and the architect John Nash created the Regency style. He was a patron of new forms of leisure, style and taste. He commissioned John Nash to build the Royal Pavilion in Brighton and remodel Buckingham Palace, and commissioned Jeffry Wyatville to rebuild Windsor Castle. George's charm and culture earned him the title "the first gentleman of England", but his dissolute way of life and poor relationships with his parents and his wife, Caroline of Brunswick, earned him the contempt of the people and dimmed the prestige of the monarchy. He excluded Caroline from his coronation and asked the government to introduce the unpopular Pains and Penalties Bill in an unsuccessful attempt to divorce her. George's rule was tarnished by scandal and financial extravagance. His ministers found his behaviour selfish, unreliable and irresponsible and he was strongly influenced by favourites. During most of George's regency and reign, Lord Liverpool controlled the government as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Liverpool's government presided over Britain's ultimate victory over Napoleon and negotiated a peace settlement with the French. After Liverpool's retirement, George IV was forced to accept Catholic emancipation despite opposing it. George IV died at 3:15 AM at Windsor Castle, Berkshire, England, United Kingdom, aged 67. At about 3 AM, George awoke and passed a bowel movement, "a large evacuation mix'd with blood", then sent for his doctor Sir Henry Halford, allegedly calling to his servants "Sir Henry! Sir Henry! Fetch him; this is death!" Accounts of George's final moments and last words vary. According to Halford, following his arrival and that of Sir William Knighton, the King's "lips grew livid, and he dropped his head on the page's shoulder ... I was up the stairs in five minutes, and he died but eight minutes afterwards." Other accounts state the King placed his hands on his stomach and said "Surely, this must be death", or that he called out "Good God, what is this?", clasped his page's hand, and said "my boy, this is death". An autopsy conducted by his physicians revealed George had died from upper gastrointestinal bleeding resulting from the rupture of a blood vessel in his stomach A large tumour "the size of an orange" was found attached to his bladder; his heart was enlarged, had heavily calcified valves and was surrounded by a large fat deposit. The King was buried in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, on July 15. His only legitimate child, Princess Charlotte, predeceased him in 1817, as did his childless younger brother Prince Frederick in 1827, so he was succeeded by another younger brother, William IV.

It would be over three and a half years, on April 12, 1981, that Space Shuttle Program began spaceflight missions with Space Shuttle Columbia, with Enterprise making its first space flight three months later, on July 16, 1981. Space Shuttle Enterprise (Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-101) was rolled out on September 17, 1976. It was built for NASA as part of the Space Shuttle program to perform atmospheric test flights after being launched from a modified Boeing 747. It was constructed without engines or a functional heat shield. As a result, it was not capable of spaceflight. Originally, Enterprise had been intended to be refitted for orbital flight to become the second space-rated orbiter in service. However, during the construction of Space Shuttle Columbia, details of the final design changed, making it simpler and less costly to build Challenger around a body frame that had been built as a test article. Similarly, Enterprise was considered for refit to replace Challenger after the latter was destroyed, but Endeavour was built from structural spares instead. Enterprise was restored and placed on display in 2003 at the Smithsonian's new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. Following the retirement of the Space Shuttle fleet, Discovery replaced Enterprise at the Udvar-Hazy Center, and Enterprise was transferred to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City, where it has been on display since July 2012.

August 12, 1676: The Colonial History Of The United States: The British Colonization Of The Americas: The New England Colonies (1620-1776): The American Indian Wars (The American Frontier Wars, The Indian Wars): King Philip's War (The First Indian War, Metacom's War, Metacomet's War, Pometacomet's Rebellion, Metacom's Rebellion) (June 20, 1675 - April 12, 1678): -- Praying Indian John Alderman shoots and kills Metacomet, leader of the Pokanokets, a tribe within the Wampanoag Indian Federation, ending King Philip's War. Nicknamed 'King Philip' by colonists, Metacomet led this Native American uprising against white settlers in a war that raged for nearly two years. King Philip's War (sometimes called the First Indian War, Metacom's War, Metacomet's War, Pometacomet's Rebellion, or Metacom's Rebellion) was an armed conflict in 1675-78 between American Indian inhabitants of the New England region of North America versus New England colonists and their Indian allies. The war is named for Metacomet, the Wampanoag chief who adopted the name Philip because of the friendly relations between his father Massasoit and the Mayflower Pilgrims. The war continued in the most northern reaches of New England until the signing of the Treaty of Casco Bay in April 1678. Massasoit had maintained a long-standing alliance with the colonists. Metacom (c. 1638-1676) was his younger son, and he became tribal chief in 1662 after Massasoit's death. Metacom, however, did not maintain his father's alliance between the Wampanoags and the colonists. At Taunton, Massachusetts in 1671, the colonists insisted that the peace agreement include the surrender of Indian guns; then three Wampanoags were hanged for murder in Plymouth Colony in 1675. Metacom's followers and allies launched a united assault on colonial towns throughout the region. His forces gained some victories in the first year, but then the Indian alliance began to unravel. By the end of the conflict, the Wampanoags and their Narragansett allies were almost completely destroyed. Metacom fled to his ancestral home at Mt. Hope, where he was finally killed by the colonial militia. The war was the single greatest calamity to occur in seventeenth-century Puritan New England and is considered by many to be the deadliest war in the history of European settlement in North America in proportion to the population. In the space of little more than a year, 12 of the region's towns were destroyed and many more were damaged, the economy of Plymouth and Rhode Island Colonies was all but ruined and their population was decimated, losing one-tenth of all men available for military service. More than half of New England's towns were attacked by Indians. King Philip's War began the development of an independent American identity. The New England colonists faced their enemies without support from any outside government or military. The colonists formed the United Colonies of New England, commonly known as the New England Confederation, a military alliance of the English colonies of Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, Connecticut, and New Haven, formed in May 1643 and dissolved after numerous colonial charters were revoked in the early 1680s. Its primary purpose was to unite the Puritan colonies in support of the church, and for defense against the American Indians and the Dutch colony of New Netherland. It was the first milestone on the long road to colonial unity, and was established as a direct result of a war that started between the Mohegans and Narragansetts. The confederation had its greatest importance during King Philip's War in 1675. It was dissolved after numerous colonial charters were revoked in the early 1680s. This experience gave the colonies a group identity separate and distinct from Britain.

August 12, 1944: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Western Front Of World War II: The Liberation Of France: Operation Overlord (The Battle Of Normandy, The Normandy Campaign): D-Day (The D-Day Landings, The Normandy Landings): The Battle Of The Falaise Pocket (The Falaise Pocket, Operation Tractable) (German: Kessel Von Falaise, "The Falaise Cauldron"): -- In the final offensive component of The Battle Of Normandy, Canadian and Polish units, supported by one brigade of British tanks, capture the strategically important town of Falaise, Calvados, France. The goal of this operation was to capture Falaise and then the smaller towns of Trun and Chambois. This operation was part of the largest encirclement on the Western Front during the Second World War. Despite a slow start and limited gains north of Falaise, novel tactics by the 1st Polish Armoured Division: under the command of General brygady Stanislaw Maczek during the drive for Chambois: enabled the Falaise Gap to be partially closed by 19 August 1944, trapping about 150,000 German soldiers in the Falaise Pocket. Although the Falaise Gap was narrowed to a distance of several hundred metres (yards), attacks and counter-attacks by two battle groups of the 1st Polish Armoured Division and the II SS Panzer Corps on Hill 262 (Mont Ormel) prevented the quick closing of the gap and thousands of German troops escaped. During two days of nearly continuous fighting, Polish forces using artillery barrages and close-quarter fighting, managed to hold off counter-attacks by seven German divisions. On 21 August, elements of the First Canadian Army relieved the Polish survivors and sealed the Falaise Pocket by linking up with the Third US Army. This led to the surrender and capture of the remaining units of the German 7th Army in the pocket.

August 12, 1944: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Eastern Front Of World War II: The Polish Resistance Movement In World War II: Operation Tempest (Polish: Akcja Burza, "Operation Storm"): The Warsaw Uprising: (Polish: Powstanie Warszawskie; German: Warschauer Aufstand) (The August Uprising [Polish: Powstanie Sierpniowe]): The Wola Massacre (Polish: Rzez Soli, "The Wola Slaughter"): -- The week-long Wola Massacre concludes, during which time at least 40,000 people in the Wola district of Poland's capital city Warsaw were killed indiscriminately or in mass executions by German troops and collaborationist forces during the early phase of the Warsaw Uprising. The Wola Massacre (Polish: Rzez Woli, lit. "Wola Slaughter") was the systematic killing of between 40,000 and 50,000 Poles in the Wola neighbourhood of the Polish capital city, Warsaw, by the German Wehrmacht and fellow Axis collaborators in the Azerbaijani Legion, as well as the mostly-Russian RONA forces, which took place from August 5 to 12, 1944. The massacre was ordered by Adolf Hitler, who directed to kill "anything that moves" to stop the Warsaw Uprising soon after it began. Tens of thousands of Polish civilians along with captured Home Army resistance fighters were brutally murdered by the Germans in organised mass executions throughout Wola. Whole families, including babies, children and the elderly, were often shot on the spot, but some were killed after torture and sexual assault. Soldiers murdered patients in hospitals, killing them in their beds, as well as the doctors and nurses caring for them. Dead bodies were piled up to be burned by the Verbrennungskommando ("burning detachment") to destroy the evidence of the massacre; though first, dogs were let loose to find survivors to be killed. The operation was led by Erich Von dem Bach-Zelewski, though its main perpetrators were the Dirlewanger Brigade and the "RONA" Kaminski Brigade, whose forces committed the cruelest atrocities, drawing criticism from Bach-Zelewski himself. The Germans anticipated that these atrocities would crush the insurrectionists' will to fight and put the uprising to a swift end. However, the ruthless pacification of Wola only stiffened Polish resistance, and it took until October 2 after heavy fighting for the Germans to regain control of the city.

August 12, 1990: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Gulf War (The Persian Gulf War, Gulf War I): The Invasion Of Kuwait: -- Acting under the authority of United Nations Security Council Resolution 661 (UNSCR 661) of August 6, which took steps to implement international sanctions on Iraq, the naval blockade of Iraq and Kuwait begins as all shipments of Iraqi oil are halted. Although UNSCR 661 did not specifically authorize a naval blockade (which would be specifically authorized under UNSCR 665 on August 25), it did declare that states should prevent (a) the import of all products and commodities originating in Iraq or Kuwait; (b) any activities by their nationals or in their territories that would promote the export of products originating in Iraq or Kuwait, as well as the transfer of funds to either country for the purposes of such activities; (c) the sale of weapons or other military equipment to Iraq and Kuwait, excluding humanitarian aid; and (d) the availability of funds or other financial or economic resources to either country, or to any commercial, industrial or public utility operating within them, except for medical or humanitarian purposes. On August 9, UNSCR 662 was adopted unanimously, declaring the annexation of Kuwait by Iraq illegal in any form, reaffirming Resolutions 660, which condemned the invasion and demanded Iraq withdraw immediately and unconditionally to positions as they were on August 1. 1990, and 661. The Council called upon all States and international organisations not to recognise the annexation, further asking States to refrain from any action that may constitute an indirect recognition of the annexation. It also demanded Iraq rescind its actions in Kuwait after the invasion, keeping the situation on its agenda. Also on August 9, in response to the American military buildup in Saudi Arabia and to international pressure against Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait, Iraq closes all its land borders. Operation Desert Shield had been officially launched on August 8, as the day before that President George Bush ordered a massive military buildup to prevent further Iraqi military advances, with the first American soldiers being sent to Saudi Arabia that same day: 15,000 U.S. troops, 32 destroyers and 100 helicopters and fighter planes. Soon after his conquest of Kuwait, Saddam began verbally attacking the Saudis. He argued that the US-supported Saudi state was an illegitimate and unworthy guardian of the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. He combined the language of the Islamist groups that had recently fought in Afghanistan with the rhetoric Iran had long used to attack the Saudis. Acting on the Carter Doctrine's policy that the United States would use military force, if necessary, to defend its national interests in the Persian Gulf, and out of fear the Iraqi Army could launch an invasion of Saudi Arabia, US President George Bush quickly announced that the US would launch a "wholly defensive" mission to prevent Iraq from invading Saudi Arabia under the codename Operation Desert Shield. Operation Desert Shield began on 7 August 1990 when US troops were sent to Saudi Arabia due also to the request of its monarch, King Fahd, who had earlier called for US military assistance. This "wholly defensive" doctrine was quickly abandoned when, on 8 August, Iraq declared Kuwait to be Iraq's 19th province and Saddam named his cousin, Ali Hassan Al-Majid, as its military-governor. The US Navy dispatched two naval battle groups built around the aircraft carriers USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and USS Independence to the Persian Gulf, where they were ready by 8 August. The US also sent the battleships USS Missouri and USS Wisconsin to the region. A total of 48 US Air Force F-15s from the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, landed in Saudi Arabia, and immediately commenced round the clock air patrols of the Saudi-Kuwait-Iraq border to discourage further Iraqi military advances. They were joined by 36 F-15 A-Ds from the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing at Bitburg, Germany. The Bitburg contingent was based at Al Kharj Air Base, approximately an hour south east of Riyadh. The 36th TFW would be responsible for 11 confirmed Iraqi Air Force aircraft shot down during the war. There were also two Air National Guard units stationed at Al Kharj Air Base, the South Carolina Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing flew bombing missions with 24 F-16s flying 2,000 combat missions and dropping 4 million pounds of munitions, and the New York Air National Guard's 174th Fighter Wing from Syracuse flew 24 F-16s on bombing missions. Military buildup continued from there, eventually reaching 543,000 troops, twice the number used in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Much of the material was airlifted or carried to the staging areas via fast sealift ships, allowing a quick buildup.

August 12, 1861: #BOTD: Luigi Galleani, Italian anarchist active in the United States from 1901 to 1919, viewed by historians as an insurrectionary anarchist (a revolutionary theory, practice and tendency within the anarchist movement that emphasizes insurrection within anarchist practice) (d. November 4, 1931) is #born in the city of Vercelli, Italy. He is best known for his enthusiastic advocacy of "propaganda of the deed", i.e. the use of violence to eliminate tyrants and oppressors and to act as a catalyst to the overthrow of existing government institutions. From 1914 to 1932, Galleani's followers in the United States (known as i Galleanisti), carried out a series of bombings and assassination attempts against institutions and persons they viewed as class enemies. After Galleani was deported from the United States to Italy in June 1919, his colleagues are alleged to have carried out the Wall Street bombing of 1920, which resulted in the deaths of 38 people. Luigi Galleani died of a heart attack after a walk throug the countryside of Caprigliola, Aulla, Tuscany, Kingdom of Italy, aged 70. He was buried at night in secret, due to the authorities fearing his funeral might incite a riot.

August 12, 1827: #DOTD: #RIP: William Blake, English Romantic poet, printmaker, painter, Swedenborgian, mystic, philosopher and genius unrecognized during his lifetime, now considered the greatest British artist (b. November 28, 1757) #dies, at Fountain Court off the Strand, property demolished in the 1880s when the Savoy Hotel was built, Charing Cross, London, England, aged 69. On the day of his death, Blake worked relentlessly on his Dante series. He then ceased working and turned to his wife, who was in tears by his bedside. He said to her "Stay Kate! Keep just as you are - I will draw your portrait - for you have ever been an angel to me." Having completed this portrait (now lost), Blake laid down his tools and began to sing hymns and verses. At six that evening, after promising his wife that he would be with her always, Blake died. Gilchrist reports that a female lodger in the house, present at his expiration, said, "I have been at the death, not of a man, but of a blessed angel." George Richmond gives the following account of Blake's death in a letter to Samuel Palmer: "He died ... in a most glorious manner. He said He was going to that Country he had all His life wished to see & expressed Himself Happy, hoping for Salvation through Jesus Christ - Just before he died His Countenance became fair. His eyes Brighten'd and he burst out Singing of the things he saw in Heaven." Blake's body was buried in a plot shared with others, five days after his death - on the eve of his 45th wedding anniversary - at the Dissenter's burial ground in Bunhill Fields, in what is today the London Borough of Islington. His parents' bodies were buried in the same graveyard. Present at the ceremonies were Catherine, Edward Calvert, George Richmond, Frederick Tatham and John Linnell. Following Blake's death, Catherine moved into Tatham's house as a housekeeper. She believed she was regularly visited by Blake's spirit. She continued selling his illuminated works and paintings, but entertained no business transaction without first "consulting Mr. Blake". On the day of her death, in October 1831, she was as calm and cheerful as her husband, and called out to him "as if he were only in the next room, to say she was coming to him, and it would not be long now". On her death, longtime acquaintance Frederick Tatham took possession of Blake's works and continued selling them. Tatham later joined the fundamentalist Irvingite church and under the influence of conservative members of that church burned manuscripts that he deemed heretical. The exact number of destroyed manuscripts is unknown, but shortly before his death Blake told a friend he had written "twenty tragedies as long as Macbeth", none of which survive. Another acquaintance, William Michael Rossetti, also burned works by Blake that he considered lacking in quality, and John Linnell erased sexual imagery from a number of Blake's drawings. At the same time, some works not intended for publication were preserved by friends, such as his notebook and An Island in the Moon. Blake's grave is commemorated by two stones. The first was a stone that reads "Near by lie the remains of the poet-painter William Blake 1757-1827 and his wife Catherine Sophia 1762-1831". The memorial stone is situated approximately 20 metres (66 ft) away from the actual grave, which was not marked until 191 years later. For years since 1965, the exact location of William Blake's grave had been lost and forgotten. The area had been damaged in the Second World War; gravestones were removed and a garden was created. The memorial stone, indicating that the burial sites are "nearby", was listed as a Grade II listed structure in 2011. A Portuguese couple, Carol and Luis Garrido, rediscovered the exact burial location after 14 years of investigatory work, and the Blake Society organised the second stone, a permanent memorial slab, which was unveiled at a public ceremony at the site on August 12, 2018, the 191st anniversary of his death. The new stone is inscribed "Here lies William Blake 1757-1827 Poet Artist Prophet" above a verse from his poem Jerusalem. In 1957 a memorial to Blake and his wife was erected in Westminster Abbey. Another memorial lies in St James's Church, Piccadilly, where he was baptised. The Blake Prize for Religious Art was established in his honour in Australia in 1949. At the time of Blake's death, he had sold fewer than 30 copies of Songs of Innocence and of Experience. William Blake was born at 28 Broad Street (now Broadwick St.) in Soho, London. Although Blake was considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, he is held in high regard by later critics for his expressiveness and creativity, and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work. Although he lived in London his entire life, except for three years spent in Felpham, he produced a diverse and symbolically rich oeuvre, which embraced the imagination as "the body of God" or "human existence itself". His paintings and poetry have been characterised as part of the Romantic movement and as "Pre-Romantic". Reverent of the Bible but hostile to the Church of England (indeed, to almost all forms of organised religion), Blake was influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American Revolutions. Though later he rejected many of these political beliefs, he maintained an amiable relationship with the political activist Thomas Paine; he was also influenced by thinkers such as Emanuel Swedenborg. Despite these known influences, the singularity of Blake's work makes him difficult to classify. The 19th-century scholar William Rossetti characterised him as a "glorious luminary", "a man not forestalled by predecessors, nor to be classed with contemporaries, nor to be replaced by known or readily surmisable successors".

August 12, 1955: #DOTD: #RIP: Thomas Mann, German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate (b. June 6, 1875) #dies aged 80 in a Zurich, Switzerland hospital of retroperitoneal hematoma, the compression and thrombosis of the iliac vein of the lower abdomen, which in his case caused his left leg to experience pain and unilateral swelling. Thomas Mann was buried on On August 16, 1955 in Village Cemetery, Kilchberg, Zurich, Switzerland. Thomas Mann was born Paul Thomas Mann to a bourgeois family in the Free City Pf Lubeck, German Empire. His highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas are noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. His analysis and critique of the European and German soul used modernized German and Biblical stories, as well as the ideas of Goethe, Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. He was awarded the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature. Paul Thomas Mann's highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas are noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. His analysis and critique of the European and German soul used modernized German and Biblical stories, as well as the ideas of Goethe, Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. Mann was a member of the Hanseatic Mann family and portrayed his family and class in his first novel, Buddenbrooks. His older brother was the radical writer Heinrich Mann and three of his six children, Erika Mann, Klaus Mann and Golo Mann, also became important German writers. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, Mann fled to Switzerland. When World War II broke out in 1939, he moved to the United States, returning to Switzerland in 1952. Thomas Mann is one of the best-known exponents of the so-called Exilliteratur, literature written in German by those who opposed or fled the Hitler regime. Mann's work influenced many future authors, including Heinrich Boll, Joseph Heller, Yukio Mishima, and Orhan Pamuk. During World War I, Mann supported Kaiser Wilhelm II's conservatism, attacked liberalism and supported the war effort, calling the Great War "a purification, a liberation, an enormous hope". In his 600-page-long work Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man (1918), Mann presented his conservative, anti-modernist philosophy: spiritual tradition over material progress, German patriotism over egalitarian internationalism, and rooted culture over rootless civilisation. Later, in Von Deutscher Republik (1923), as a semi-official spokesman for parliamentary democracy, Mann called upon German intellectuals to support the new Weimar Republic. He also gave a lecture at the Beethovensaal in Berlin on 13 October 1922, which appeared in Die neue Rundschau in November 1922, in which he developed his eccentric defence of the Republic based on extensive close readings of Novalis and Walt Whitman. Thereafter, his political views gradually shifted toward liberal left and democratic principles. Mann initially gave his support to the left-liberal German Democratic Party before shifting further left and urging unity behind the Social Democrats. In 1930 he gave a public address in Berlin titled "An Appeal to Reason", in which he strongly denounced Nazism and encouraged resistance by the working class. This was followed by numerous essays and lectures in which he attacked the Nazis. At the same time, he expressed increasing sympathy for socialist ideas. When the Nazis came to power in 1933, Mann and his wife were on holiday in Switzerland. Due to his strident denunciations of Nazi policies, his son Klaus advised him not to return. In contrast to those of his brother Heinrich and his son Klaus, Mann's books were not among those burnt publicly by Hitler's regime in May 1933, possibly since he had been the Nobel laureate in literature for 1929. In 1936, the Nazi government officially revoked his German citizenship. During the war, Mann made a series of anti-Nazi radio-speeches, published as Listen, Germany! in 1943. They were recorded on tape in the United States and then sent to the United Kingdom, where the British Broadcasting Corporation transmitted them, hoping to reach German listeners.

August 12, 1881: #BOTD: Cecil B. DeMille, American Film pioneer, director and producer, acknowledged as a founding father of the cinema of the United States and the most commercially successful producer-director in film history (d. January 21, 1959) is #born Cecil Blount DeMille in Ashfield, Massachusetts. Between 1913 and 1956, Cecil Blount DeMille made a total of 70 features, both silent and sound films. His films were distinguished by their epic scale and by his cinematic showmanship. He made silent films of every genre: social dramas, comedies, Westerns, farces, morality plays, and historical pageants. His films including Cleopatra, The Ten Commandments, and The Greatest Show on Earth. DeMille began his career as a stage actor in 1900. He later moved to writing and directing stage productions, some with Jesse Lasky, who was then a vaudeville producer. DeMille's first film, The Squaw Man (1914), was also the first feature film shot in Hollywood. Its interracial love story made it a phenomenal hit and it "put Hollywood on the map." The continued success of his productions led to the founding of Paramount Pictures with Lasky and Adolph Zukor. His first biblical epic, The Ten Commandments (1923), was both a critical and financial success; it held the Paramount revenue record for twenty-five years. In 1927, he directed The King of Kings, a biography of Jesus of Nazareth, which was acclaimed for its sensitivity and reached more than 800 million viewers. The Sign of the Cross (1932) was the first sound film to integrate all aspects of cinematic technique. Cleopatra (1934) was his first film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. After more than thirty years in film production, DeMille reached the pinnacle of his career with Samson and Delilah (1949), a biblical epic which did "an all-time record business." Along with biblical and historical narratives, he also directed films oriented toward "neo-naturalism," which tried to portray the laws of man fighting the forces of nature. He went on to receive his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director for his circus drama The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), which won both the Academy Award for Best Picture and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama. His last and most famous film, The Ten Commandments (1956), also a Best Picture Academy Award nominee, is currently the seventh-highest-grossing film of all time, adjusted for inflation. In addition to his Best Picture Award, he received an Academy Honorary Award for his film contributions, the Palme d'Or (posthumously) for Union Pacific, a DGA Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. He was also the first recipient of the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, which was later named in his honor. Cecil B. DeMille died of a heart attack in Hollywood, California at the age of 77. DeMille's funeral was held on January 23 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. He was entombed at the Hollywood Memorial Cemetery (now known as Hollywood Forever). After his death, notable news outlets such as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and The Guardian honored DeMille as "pioneer of movies", "the greatest creator and showman of our industry", and "the founder of Hollywood". DeMille left his multi-million dollar estate in Los Feliz, Los Angeles in Laughlin Park to his daughter Cecilia because his wife had dementia and was unable to care for an estate. She would die one year later. His personal will drew a line between Cecilia and his three adopted children, with Cecilia receiving a majority of DeMille's inheritance and estate. The other three children were surprised by this, as DeMille did not treat the children differently in life. Cecilia lived in the house for many years but auctioned the house in the late 1980s.

August 12, 1912: #BOTD: #HBD! Samuel Fuller, also known as Sam Fuller, American combat soldier, screenwriter, novelist, and film director known for low-budget, understated genre movies with controversial themes, often made outside the conventional studio system (d. October 30, 1997) is #born Samuel Michael Fuller in Worcester, Massachusetts into the Jewish immigrant family of Rebecca (nee Baum) and Benjamin Fuller Rabinovitch; the family's surname was changed to Fuller, possibly inspired by Samuel Fuller, a doctor who arrived in America on the Mayflower. Fuller wrote his first screenplay for Hats Off in 1936, and made his directorial debut with the Western I Shot Jesse James (1949). He would continue to direct several other Westerns and war thrillers throughout the 1950s. Fuller shifted from Westerns and war thrillers in the 1960s with his low-budget thriller Shock Corridor in 1963, followed by the neo-noir The Naked Kiss (1964). He was inactive in filmmaking for most of the 1970s, before writing and directing the war epic The Big Red One (1980), and the experimental White Dog (1982), whose screenplay he co-wrote with Curtis Hanson. During World War II, Fuller joined the United States Army. He was assigned as an infantryman to the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, and saw heavy fighting. He was involved in landings in Africa, Sicily, and Normandy and also saw action in Belgium and Czechoslovakia. In 1945, he fought in the liberation of the Falkenau concentration camp, and shot 16 mm footage, known as V-E +1 (which Fuller claimed was his directorial debut), that was later integrated into the French documentary Falkenau: The Impossible (1988). In 2014, the footage was selected for the United States National Film Registry. For his military service, Fuller was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He reached the rank of Corporal. Fuller used his wartime experiences as material in his films, especially in The Big Red One (1980), the nickname for the 1st Infantry Division he served in. After the war, Fuller co-authored a regimental history of the 16th Infantry. Sam Fuller died at his home in Los Angeles, California of natural causes, aged 85. In November 1997, the Directors Guild held a three-hour memorial in his honor, hosted by Curtis Hanson, his longtime friend and co-writer on White Dog. Sam Fuller died of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles, aged 85. His remains were cremated, and the ashes given to his widow Christa Lang-Fuller.

August 12, 2009: #DOTD: #RIP: Les Paul, American jazz, country, and blues guitarist, songwriter, luthier, sound recording innovator and pioneer and inventor (b. June 9, 1915) #dies of complications from pneumonia at White Plains Hospital in White Plains, New York. He was buried in Prairie Home Cemetery, Waukesha, Wisconsin on August 21, 2009. After hearing about his death, many musicians commented on his importance. Slash called him "vibrant and full of positive energy", while Richie Sambora called him a "revolutionary in the music business". The Edge said, "His legacy as a musician and inventor will live on and his influence on rock and roll will never be forgotten." Les Paul was born Lester William Polsfuss in Waukesha, Wisconsin into a family of German ancestry. He was one of the pioneers of the solid-body electric guitar, and his techniques served as inspiration for the Gibson Les Paul. Paul taught himself how to play guitar, and while he is mainly known for jazz and popular music, he had an early career in country music. He is credited with many recording innovations. Although he was not the first to use the technique, his early experiments with overdubbing (also known as sound on sound), delay effects such as tape delay, phasing effects and multitrack recording were among the first to attract widespread attention. His innovative talents extended into his playing style, including licks, trills, chording sequences, fretting techniques and timing, which set him apart from his contemporaries and inspired many guitarists of the present day. He recorded with his wife, the singer and guitarist Mary Ford, in the 1950s, and they sold millions of records. Among his many honors, Paul is one of a handful of artists with a permanent, stand-alone exhibit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is prominently named by the music museum on its website as an "architect" and a "key inductee" with Sam Phillips and Alan Freed. Les Paul is the only person to be included in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

August 12, 1929: #BOTD: #HBD! Buck Owens, American singer, songwriter, guitarist and band leader (d. March 25, 2006) is #born Alvis Edgar Owens Jr in Sherman, Texas. He was the front man for Buck Owens And The Buckaroos, which had 21 No. 1 hits on the Billboard country music charts. He pioneered what came to be called the Bakersfield sound, named in honor of Bakersfield, California, Owens' adopted home, and the city from which he drew inspiration for what he preferred to call "American music". While the Buckaroos originally featured a fiddle and retained pedal steel guitar into the 1970s, their sound on records and onstage was always more stripped-down and elemental. The band's signature style was based on simple story lines, infectious choruses, a twangy electric guitar, an insistent rhythm supplied by a drum track placed forward in the mix, and high, two-part harmonies featuring Owens and his guitarist Don Rich. From 1969 to 1986, Owens co-hosted the popular CBS television variety show Hee Haw with Roy Clark. According to his son, Buddy Alan (Owens), the accidental 1974 death of Rich, his best friend, devastated him for years and impacted his creative efforts until he performed with Dwight Yoakam in 1988. Owens is a member of both the Country Music Hall of Fame and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. When the The Beatles perfomed their landmark first concert at Shea Stadium Ringo sang "Act Naturally" as a tip of the hat to Buck Owens on that historic occasion. Owens died in his sleep of an apparent heart attack at his ranch just north of Bakersfield, California only hours after performing at his club. He was 76 years old. He is buried at Greenlawn Southwest Mortuary And Cemetery in Bakersfield.

August 12, 1918: #BOTD: #HBD! Sid Bernstein, American record producer, music promoter, talent manager, impresario and author (d. August 21, 2013) is #born in New York City, named Sidney Bernstein, and was adopted by a Russian Jewish family. Having worked as a booking agent for pop stars such as Dion and Chubby Checker, Bernstein changed the American music scene in the 1960s by bringing the British Invasion rock groups Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Herman's Hermits, the Moody Blues, and the Kinks to America. He was the first impresario to organize rock concerts at sports stadiums. On August 15, 1965, Bernstein booked The Beatles Shea Stadium Concert, where The Beatles played to nearly 60,000 fans at Shea Stadium in New York City, an event later regarded as the birth of stadium rock. It was the opening show of the 1965 Beatles Tour. It was record-breaking, and one of the most famous concert events of its era. It set records for attendance and revenue generation. Promoter Bernstein said, "Over 55,000 people saw the Beatles at Shea Stadium. We took 304K USD, the greatest gross ever in the history of show business." It remained the highest concert attendance in the United States until 1973, when Led Zeppelin played to an audience of 56,000 in Tampa, Florida. This demonstrated that outdoor concerts on a large scale could be successful and profitable. Sid Bernstein died in Manhattan, New York City, nine days after his 95th birthday. He was survived by his wife Geraldine Gale; and their four sons, two daughters and six grandchildren. He is buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.

August 12, 1985: #DOTD: #RIP: Kyu Sakamoto, Japanese singer, songwriter and actor, best known outside Japan for his international hit song "Ue O Muite Aruko" (Japanese: "I Look Up As I Walk", known as "Sukiyaki" in English-speaking markets) released by Toshiba Records, which was sung in Japanese and sold over 13 million copies (b. 1941) #dies aged 43 in the Japan Airlines Flight 123 crash, a scheduled Boeing 747SR domestic flight from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to Osaka International Airport, Japan. It is the worst single air plane disaster in world history, and the worst air disaster in Japanese history, second only to the two plane Tenerife Airport Disaster of 1977 involving KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736. A sudden decompression twelve minutes into the flight caused the plane to crash in the area of Mount Takamagahara, Ueno, Gunma Prefecture, 100 kilometres (62 miles; 54 nautical miles) from Tokyo thirty-two minutes later. The crash site was on Osutaka Ridge, near Mount Osutaka. Japan's Aircraft Accident Investigation Commission officially concluded that the rapid decompression was caused by a faulty repair by Boeing technicians after a tailstrike incident during a landing at Osaka Airport in 1978. The rear bulkhead of the plane had been repaired with an improperly installed doubler plate, compromising the plane's airworthiness. Sakamoto's solo career had been inaugurated with "Ue o Muite Aruko", after he left the band The Drifters (Japanese band). The song was first heard on the NHK entertainment program Yume de Aimasho (Japanese: "Dream Come True") on 16 August 1961. It became a smash hit and was released on red vinyl on October 15. It remained the highest selling record until January 1962, three months after its release. His international breakthrough came in 1963 during a visit to Japan by Louis Benjamin, an executive of British record company Pye Records. Hearing the song several times, Benjamin decided to bring it back to England. Due to concerns that the title would be too hard for English-speakers to pronounce or remember, the song was renamed "Sukiyaki", after the Japanese cooked beef dish familiar to the English. The new title was intended to sound both catchy and distinctive in Japanese, but other than the language, it had no actual connection to the song. In 1963, Capitol Records released the song in the US with the alternate title, eventually selling over one million copies,[3] and remaining number one on the Billboard Hot 100 number one single for three weeks in June 1963, making Sakamoto the first Asian recording artist to have a number one song on the chart. The song grew to become one of the world's best-selling singles of all time, selling over 13 million copies worldwide. "Ue o Muite Aruko" was written by lyricist Rokusuke Ei and composer Hachidai Nakamura. Ei wrote the lyrics while walking home from a Japanese student demonstration protesting against a continued US military presence in the country, expressing his frustration at the failed efforts. The lyrics tell the story of a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears will not fall. The verses of the song describe his memories and feelings. Rokusuke Ei wrote this song while coming back from a protest against the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security Between the United States and Japan (also known in Japan as Anpo Joyaku ("Security Treaty") or just Anpo ("Security") for short) and feeling dejected about the failure of the protest movement, but the lyrics were rendered purposefully generic so that they might refer to any lost love.

August 12, 2004: #DOTD: #RIP: Chuck Leonard, African American Golden Gloves boxing champion, Vietnam War veteran, first African American disc jockey to work on a mainstream radio station, radio personality at WABC 770AM, known as 77 WABC, in New York City during the 1960s and 1970s, whose deep voice and smoothness resonated across 38 states for 14 years at ABC, Museum Of Television And Radio inductee (b. March 30, 1937) #dies in Manhattan, New York City of lung cancer aged 67. He was survived by his wife, Pam, and two daughters, Kyra and Diana. His burial details are not publicly disclosed. Chuck Leonard was born Charles Wesley Leonard in Chicago, Illinois. During his over 40-year career in broadcasting, Leonard worked virtually every shift and played all styles of music at stations including WWRL, WABC, WXLO, WRKS, WBLS, WQEW, WNSW-AM and WJUX. Leonard began his broadcasting career at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as program director of college radio WPGU, while majoring in journalism. After graduation, Leonard worked briefly for the Washington Evening Star (his boss was Carl Bernstein), while working part-time at WEBB, Baltimore. Leonard moved to WWRL (R & B) in New York in June 1965, doing the night shift. Leonard was at WWRL for just seven weeks, before WABC (AM) deejay Dan Ingram heard him and convinced WABC to hire him. He was the first African-American broadcast personality on a major market Top 40 station.
Leonard began at ABC's flagship New York radio station, Musicradio 77 WABC (AM), under program director Rick Sklar in 1965. He broke the color barrier for all who followed - the first African-American to cross over from black R & B radio to (then-mostly white) mass-appeal radio. Leonard began in the 11 p.m. to midnight slot, and continued working late nights and Sundays at the station until November 27, 1979. He did the 10:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. shift following "Cousin" Bruce Morrow and later George Michael. He also gladly handled weekend and fill-in work. Leonard was the host of "Sneak Preview," a five-minute Monday-through-Saturday evening program on ABC's American Contemporary Radio Network, which featured newly released songs. He stayed at WABC until 1979, before moving to WXLO and WRKS. Leonard moved to WXLO on May 12, 1980. At WRKS-FM (98.7 KISS-FM), Leonard did mornings ("The Wake-up Club") and afternoons in the 1980s. At WBLS-FM, New York, Leonard played R & B from 7-11 p.m. He always kept ties with WBLS, working weekends, fill-ins and overnights. At WQEW-AM, New York, Leonard played popular standards from the American songbook prior to the station flipping to Radio Disney. At WNSW-AM 1430, he played popular standards, and at WJUX-FM 103.1 "Jukebox Radio", Leonard did afternoon drive. For WCBS-FM, Leonard did occasional fill in work, including on Christmas Day. He was heard on the Radio Greats weekends. He did not work full-time at WCBS-FM because he was a full-time employee for WBLS. CBS-FM welcomed Leonard to fill in any time he could. Leonard joined Sirius Satellite Radio, where he was heard on both the Swing Street and Soul Review channels.

August 12, 1968: Aesthetics: Performing Arts: Premieres: Theatre Premieres: Musical Premieres: British Musical Premieres: -- Led Zeppelin plays together for the first time at a rehearsal studio in London's West End; the first song in the set is "Train Kept A'Rollin'". Led Zeppelin were an English rock band formed in London in 1968. The group consisted of vocalist Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. With a heavy, guitar-driven sound, they are cited as one of the progenitors of hard rock and heavy metal, although their style drew from a variety of influences, including blues and folk music. Led Zeppelin have been credited as significantly impacting the nature of the music industry, particularly in the development of album-oriented rock (AOR) and stadium rock. Originally named the New Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin signed a deal with Atlantic Records that gave them considerable artistic freedom. Initially unpopular with critics, they achieved significant commercial success with eight studio albums over ten years. Their 1969 debut, Led Zeppelin, was a top-ten album in several countries and featured such tracks as "Good Times Bad Times", "Dazed and Confused" and "Communication Breakdown". Led Zeppelin II (1969) was their first number-one album, and yielded "Ramble On" and "Whole Lotta Love". In 1970, they released Led Zeppelin III which featured "Immigrant Song". Their untitled fourth album, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV (1971), is one of the best-selling albums in history with 37 million copies sold. The album includes "Black Dog", "Rock and Roll" and "Stairway to Heaven", with the latter being among the most popular and influential works in rock history. Houses of the Holy (1973) yielded "The Ocean", "Over the Hills and Far Away" and "The Rain Song". Physical Graffiti (1975), a double album, featured "Trampled Under Foot" and "Kashmir". Page wrote most of Led Zeppelin's music, particularly early in their career, while Plant wrote most of the lyrics. Jones's keyboard-based compositions later became central to their music, which featured increasing experimentation. The latter half of their career saw a series of record-breaking tours that earned the group a reputation for excess and debauchery. Although they remained commercially and critically successful, their touring and output, which included Presence (1976) and In Through the Out Door (1979), grew limited, and the group disbanded following Bonham's death in 1980. Since then, the surviving former members have sporadically collaborated and participated in one-off reunions. The most successful of these was the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in London, with Bonham's son Jason Bonham on drums. Led Zeppelin are one of the best-selling music artists of all time; their total record sales are estimated to be between 200 to 300 million units worldwide. They achieved eight consecutive UK number-one albums and six number-one albums on the US Billboard 200, with five of their albums certified Diamond in the US. Rolling Stone magazine described them as "the heaviest band of all time", "the biggest band of the Seventies", and "unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history". They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

August 12, 1950: #BOTD: #HBD! August Darnell, known professionally as Kid Creole, African American bassist, bandleader, singer, showman, songwriter and record producer, is #born Thomas August Darnell Browder in The Bronx into a family of Caribbean, Italian and African American heritage. He co-founded Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and subsequently formed and led Kid Creole And The Coconuts. As an adult, Thom Browder began going by his two middle names, August Darnell. Claims from some sources that he was born in Montreal in Canada, are erroneous; according to Darnell they stem from the fictitious back-story behind the Kid Creole character. Growing up in the melting pot of the Bronx, Darnell was exposed early on to all kinds of music. Darnell began his musical career in a band named The In-Laws with his half-brother, Stony Browder Jr., in 1965. The band disbanded so Darnell could pursue a career as an English teacher. He taught at Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School in Hempstead, New York after studying English and drama at Hofstra University. He later claimed that he established a musical career because he was a "frustrated actor". In 1974, again with Stony Browder, he formed Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, becoming its lyricist and bass player. The band combined swing and Latin music with disco rhythms and had its biggest hit in 1976 with "Cherchez La Femme". Their self-titled debut release was a Top 40-charting album which was certified gold and was nominated for a Grammy. In 1979, Darnell left Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band. He joined the band Machine, and co-wrote their best known song "There But for the Grace of God Go I". He also began producing for other artists, such as Don Armando's Second Avenue Rhumba Band and Gichy Dan's Beachwood No.9, before adopting the name Kid Creole (adapted from the Elvis Presley film King Creole) in 1980. Darnell described the persona of Kid Creole as "a flamboyant, devil-may-care bon vivant". With his band and backing singers (including Darnell's then-wife, Adriana Kaegi), collectively known as Kid Creole And The Coconuts, he established an exuberant musical style drawing on such influences as big bands, notably that of Cab Calloway, salsa, jazz, pop music and disco. Darnell wrote the lyrics, which "satirised the high life at a time when America was ravaged by recession". The group released three albums, Off the Coast of Me (1980), Fresh Fruit in Foreign Places (1981) and Tropical Gangsters (1982), that became especially popular and successful in Europe. Darnell also worked as a producer with acts on ZE Records. However, the band was much less successful in the U.S., and was eventually dropped by Sony. In 1983, Darnell formed a new swing big band, Elbow Bones and the Racketeers, and gained the hit "Night in New York". Darnell moved to England in the 1980s, and later lived in Denmark, Sweden, and Maui, and occasionally tours Kid Creole And The Coconuts with his European band. Darnell's daughter Savanna appeared as a contestant on the 2018 series of Love Island, while his son Dario 'Youngr' Darnell appeared as the opening act on the second episode of Simon Cowell's new music competition for ITV called Walk the Line (December 13, 2021). In 2019 Darnell married his girlfriend of 10 years, Eva Tudor-Jones in Maui. Eva has been a big part of the band's empire for 23 years, starting off as Mama Coconut in 1997 to now managing the band. Darnell and Eva share a daughter, born in Maui.

August 12, 1944: #DOTD: #RIP: Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., U.S. Navy lieutenant and pilot, the eldest of nine children born to Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. (1888-1969) and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy (1890-1995), the only Kennedy son who never sought political office (b. July 25, 1915) #dies when he is killed in action during World War II while serving as a land-based patrol bomber pilot; he was arming a B-17 that had been converted into a robot bomb aimed at an undisclosed German target during World War II when he died over Blythburgh, East Suffolk, England, aged 29. His remains were never recovered. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Joe Kennedy Jr. was born in Hull, Massachusetts. Joe Sr. had aspirations for Joe Jr. to become President. However, Joe Jr. was killed while participating in a top-secret mission in 1944, and the high expectations of the father then fell upon Joe Jr.'s younger brother John, who was later elected President. His Navy Cross citation reads: "The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Joseph Patrick Kennedy, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Commander of a Navy Liberator Patrol Plane in Bombing Squadron ONE HUNDRED TEN (VB-110), Special Air Unit ONE (Europe), during a special air mission directed at Mimoyecques, France, on August 12, 1944. Well knowing the extreme dangers involved and totally unconcerned for his own safety, Lieutenant Kennedy unhesitatingly volunteered to conduct an exceptionally hazardous and special operational mission. Intrepid and daring in his tactics and with unwavering confidence in the vital importance of his task, he willingly risked his life in the supreme measure of service, and, by his great personal valor and fortitude in carrying out a perilous undertaking, sustained and enhanced the finest traditions of the United States Naval Service."

August 12, 1982: #DOTD: #RIP: Henry Fonda, American film and stage actor, documentary host and film narrator with a career spanning five decades, widely recognized as one of the Hollywood greats of the classic era (b. May 16, 1905) #dies at his Los Angeles, California home from heart disease, aged 77. Fonda's wife, Shirlee, his daughter Jane, and his son Peter were at his side that day. He suffered from prostate cancer, but this did not directly cause his death and was noted only as a concurrent ailment on his death certificate. Fonda requested that no funeral be held. Henry Fonda was cremated "within hours of his death" and had specified that he wanted his "ashes thrown out with the trash." Fortunately, his family hated that idea and scattered his cremated remains in a meaningful place that is not publicly disclosed. President Ronald Reagan, a former actor himself, hailed Fonda as "a true professional dedicated to excellence in his craft. He graced the screen with a sincerity and accuracy which made him a legend." The home where Fonda was born Henry Jaynes Fonda in Grand Island, Nebraska is preserved at The Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer in Grand Island, Nebraska. On the centenary of his birth, May 16, 2005, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) honored Fonda with a marathon of his films. In May 2005, the United States Post Office released a 37-cent postage stamp with an artist's drawing of Fonda as part of their "Hollywood legends" series. The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, originally known as the Carter DeHaven Music Box, was named for the actor in 1985 by the Nederlander Organization. Henry Jaynes Fonda made his mark early as a Broadway actor. He also appeared in 1938 in plays performed in White Plains, New York, with Joan Tompkins. He made his Hollywood debut in 1935, and his career gained momentum after his Academy Award-nominated performance as Tom Joad in The Grapes Of Wrath, a 1940 adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel about an Oklahoma family who moved west during the Dust Bowl. Throughout five decades in Hollywood, Fonda cultivated a strong, appealing screen image in such classics as The Ox-Bow Incident, Mister Roberts, and 12 Angry Men. Later, Fonda moved toward darker epics such as Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West and lighter roles in family comedies such as Yours, Mine and Ours with Lucille Ball, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 54th Academy Awards for the movie On Golden Pond, his final film role. Fonda was the patriarch of a family of famous actors, including daughter Jane Fonda, son Peter Fonda, granddaughter Bridget Fonda, and grandson Troy Garity. His family and close friends called him "Hank". In 1999, he was named the sixth-Greatest Male Star of All Time by the American Film Institute.

August 12, 1964: #DOTD: #RIP: Ian Fleming, English author, actor, journalist and naval intelligence officer who is best known for his James Bond series of spy novels (b. May 28, 1908) #dies in the early morning at age 56 on his son Caspar's 12th birthday at Kent And Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury, Kent, England. His last recorded words were an apology to the ambulance drivers for having inconvenienced them, saying "I am sorry to trouble you chaps. I don't know how you get along so fast with the traffic on the roads these days." Fleming was a heavy smoker and drinker throughout his adult life, and suffered from heart disease. In 1961, aged 53, he suffered a heart attack and struggled to recuperate. On August 11, 1964, while staying at a hotel in Canterbury, Fleming went to the Royal St George's Golf Club for lunch and later dined at his hotel with friends. The day had been tiring for him, and he collapsed with another heart attack shortly after the meal. Fleming is buried in the churchyard of Sevenhampton, near Swindon. His will was proved on November 4, with his estate valued at 302,147 PS (equivalent to 6,513,997 PS / 8,077,356 USD in 2021). In October 1975 Fleming's son Caspar, aged 23, killed himself by drug overdosem and was buried with his father. Fleming's widow, British socialite Ann Geraldine Mary Fleming (nee Charteris, June 19, 1913 - July 12, 1981), previously known as Lady O'Neill and Viscountess Rothermere, is buried with her husband and their son. Ian Fleming was born Ian Lancaster Fleming at 27 Green Street in the wealthy London district of Mayfair into the wealthy family connected to the merchant bank Robert Fleming & Co.; his father was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Henley from 1910 until his death on the Western Front in 1917, and his mother Evelyn "Eve" (nee Rose) Fleming, an English socialite known for her flamboyant beauty. Educated at Eton, Sandhurst and, briefly, the universities of Munich and Geneva, Fleming moved through several jobs before he started writing. While working for Britain's Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War, Fleming was involved as the master planner of Operation Goldeneye, an the Allied plan to monitor Spain after a possible alliance between Francisco Franco and the Axis powers, and to undertake sabotage operations. He was also responsible for the planning and oversight of two intelligence units, 30 Assault Unit (also known as No. 30 Commando, a British Commando unit during the Second World War, originally formed to gather intelligence) and T-Force (the operational arm of a joint US Army-British Army mission to secure designated German scientific and industrial technology targets before they could be destroyed by retreating enemy forces or looters during the final stages of World War II and its immediate aftermath). His wartime service and his career as a journalist provided much of the background, detail and depth of the James Bond novels. Fleming wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952. It was a success, with three print runs being commissioned to cope with the demand. Eleven Bond novels and two collections of short stories followed between 1953 and 1966. The novels revolved around James Bond, an officer in the Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6. Bond was also known by his code number, 007, and was a commander in the Royal Naval Reserve. The Bond stories rank among the best-selling series of fictional books of all time, having sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Fleming also wrote the children's story Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang and two works of non-fiction. In 2008, The Times ranked Fleming 14th on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945". Fleming was married to Ann Charteris, who was divorced from the second Viscount Rothermere because of her affair with the author. Fleming's last two books, The Man with the Golden Gun and Octopussy and The Living Daylights, were published posthumously. The Man with the Golden Gun was published eight months after Fleming's death and had not been through the full editing process by Fleming. As a result, the novel was thought by publishing company Jonathan Cape to be thin and "feeble". The publishers had passed the manuscript to Kingsley Amis to read on holiday, but did not use his suggestions. Fleming's biographer Henry Chandler observes that the novel "received polite and rather sad reviews, recognising that the book had effectively been left half-finished, and as such did not represent Fleming at the top of his game". The final Bond book, containing two short stories, Octopussy and The Living Daylights, was published in Britain on June 23, 1966. Other writers have since produced Bond novels. Fleming's creation has appeared in film twenty-six times, portrayed by seven actors.

August 12, 2007: #DOTD: #RIP: Arthur Levenson, cryptographer, United States Army officer and NSA official who worked on the Japanese J19 and the German Enigma codes (b. February 15, 1914) #dies at and undisclosed location at age 93. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. His tombstone reads "ARTHUR J LEVENSON LTC US ARMY WORLD WAR II KOREA VIETNAM FEB 15 1914 AUG 12 2007". Arthur J. Levenson was born in Brooklyn, New York. He earned a B.S. in Mathematics from the City College of New York. He did graduate work in mathematics at New York University and Columbia University. He attained the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. Levenson was a graduate of the National War College. Levenson and his wife Marjorie West (1917-2011) are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. At the beginning of World War II, the Army called Mr. Levenson to active duty from the Enlisted Reserve Corps. He was approved for Signal Corps Officer Candidate School at Fort Monmouth Levenson was selected by Major William P. Bundy to be a member of the 6811th Signal Company. The 6811th Signal joined the British wartime code breaking organization at Bletchley Park in Britain. At Bletchley Park, Levenson worked against both the ENIGMA and TUNNY German cipher machines in the famous Hut 6, often decyphering messages before the German commanders the messages were intended for could read them. Levenson developed a friendship with British cryptanalysts Alan Turing and Hugh Alexander. After V-E Day, Levenson was sent with a group of British and American officers to Germany, assigned to track down German cipher equipment and to locate and interrogate German cryptanalysts. His operational contributions included decoding a message from German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel that German tanks were converging at a spot in Normandy where U.S. paratroopers were planning to jump. At the last moment, plans were changed, and the paratroopers averted disaster. After completing his service overseas, he remained in the cryptologic business as a civilian with the organizations that eventually evolved into the National Security Agency. He was a member and subsequently Chief of the Technical Consultants Group, the prestigious cryptanalytic organization where the most difficult problems were attacked. During that period he initiated the program for sending out selected NSA working mathematicians to participate in the recruitment of promising college math students-a program that greatly enhanced the quality of the growing NSA professional work force. When the Office of Production in NSA was re-structured to better focus its attacks he was selected to organize and serve as the first Chief of ADVA, an organization dedicated to the exploitation of Soviet high-grade encryption systems. He led the design and implementation of the technical attack team. He took the lead in procuring high-level government support for the project from experts like William O. Baker, head of the Bell Laboratories and longtime member of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. Levenson became chief of A Group, the major NSA organization devoted to analyzing Soviet Bloc communications. Under his leadership, A group was refocused to enhance the timeliness of its Signals Intelligence reporting to the intelligence community. Before he retired in December 1973, Levenson served as Chief of the Machine Processing Organization, responsible for the maintenance and operation of the large NSA facility which housed both commercial off- the-shelf computers and highly sophisticated special purpose machines. Levenson introduced computer management structure professionals from private industry opening up the organization to innovation from outside of the elite cryptologic workforce. Levenson retired with 32 years of Agency service. In 1976, after retiring from NSA, Levenson and NSA and NBS representatives met with the Stanford University cryptography team which had publicly criticized NSA's proposed Data Encryption Standard, DES, as being too easy to crack. In this meeting with Whitfield Diffie, Martin Hellman, and Paul Baran, he tried to convince the critics that "56 [bits] is quite adequate", because (among other reasons) brute force attack would never be the weakest link in the security of systems that used DES. NSA succeeded in getting broad adoption of 56-bit DES, particularly in the financial industry. This allowed NSA and other countries to decipher most of the world's financial transactions, until the EFF DES cracker convinced banks to switch to stronger ciphers in 1998. He was married for 62 years to Marjorie West Levenson of Washington. He had three children, David West Levenson of Warren, N.J., Sarah Stromeyer of Austin and Rebecca Levenson Smith of Silver Spring; and two grandchildren. Levenson was awarded the NSA Exceptional Civilian Service Award in 1969. and was inducted to the NSA Hall of Honor in 2009.

August 12, 1099: Religion: The History Of Religion: Abrahamic Religions: Christianity: The History Of Roman Catholicism: The Latin Church (Latin: Ecclesia Latina): The Middle Ages (The Medieval Period, The Mediaeval Period): The Crusades: The First Crusade (1096-1099): The Battle Of Ascalon: -- At dawn, in what is considered the last engagement of the First Crusade, crusaders under the command of Godfrey of Bouillon launch a surprise attack on the Fatimid army still sleeping in its camp outside the defensive walls of Ascalon and defeat Fatimid forces led by Al-Afdal Shahanshah, securing the safety of Jerusalem. The Crusaders completed their primary objective of capturing Jerusalem on July 15, 1099. In early August, they learned of the approach of a 20,000-strong Fatimid army under vizier al-Afdal Shahanshah. Under Godfrey's command the 10,200-strong Crusader army took the offensive, leaving the city on August 10 to risk everything on a great battle against the approaching Muslims. The Crusaders marched barefoot, carrying the relic of the True Cross with them, accompanied by patriarch Arnulf of Chocques. The army marched south from Jerusalem, approaching the vicinity of Ascalon on the 11th and capturing Egyptian spies who revealed al-Afdal's dispositions and strength. The Fatimids had failed to post enough guards, leaving only a part of their army capable of fighting. The Crusaders quickly defeated the half-ready Fatimid infantry, while the Fatimid cavalry barely fought at all. The battle was over in less than an hour. The Crusader knights reached the center of the camp, capturing the vizier's standard and personal baggage, including his sword. Some Fatimids fled into the trees and were killed by Crusader arrows and lances, while others begged for mercy at the Crusaders' feet and were butchered en masse. The terrified vizier fled by ship to Egypt, leaving the Crusaders to kill any survivors and gather up a vast amount of loot. Ibn al-Qalanisi estimated 12,700 Fatimid dead. The Battle Of Ascalon took place shortly after the capture of Jerusalem. The first Muslim attempt to recapture Jerusalem ended in complete defeat, but Godfrey failed to exploit the victory and take Ascalon, whose Fatimid garrison was willing to surrender only to Raymond of Toulouse, a condition Godfrey would not accept. The Fatimid base in Ascalon remained a thorn in the side of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and would not fall until 1153.

August 12, 1990: Great Discoveries: Paleontology: Fossils: Dinsosaur Fossils:Tyrannosaurus Fossils: Sue (FMNH PR 2081): -- Sue, the nickname given to the Field Museum of Natural History's dinosaur fossil classified as FMNH PR 2081, one of the largest, most extensive, and best preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex specimens ever found, at over 90 percent recovered by bulk, is discovered in South Dakota by American explorer by American explorer and fossil collector Sue Hendrickson, and is named after her. The personified dinosaur, through Sue's official Twitter and Field Museum press releases, uses the singular they pronoun, as the specimen's sex has not been determined, despite being named Sue; indeed, T-Rex Sue may in fact be "A Boy Named Sue" :). After ownership disputes were settled, the fossil was auctioned in October 1997 for 8.3M USD, the highest amount ever paid for a dinosaur fossil until October 7, 2020 when T. rex Stan was auctioned for 31.8M USD. Sue is now a permanent feature at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois. The only T-Rex larger thatn Sue is Scotty, The Royal Saskatchewan Museum's RSM P2523.8, discovered in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1991, which is also the largest dinosaur ever discovered in Canada, and one of the oldest and most complete fossils of its kind at more than 70% bulk.

(#JCKaelin here: Even Albert Einstein acknowledged her Wisdom by asserting that whenever he could not find a solution to a given problem, he'd resort to The Cosmic Doctrine by Madame Blavatsky ; ) . )
=========
August 12, 1831: #BOTD: #HBD! Helena Blavatsky (nee Hahn von Rottenstern), often known as Madame Blavatsky, Russian-English mystic, occultist, theosophist, philosopher, scholar author who co-founded the Theosophical Society in 1875. (d. May 8, 1891) is #born Yelena Petrovna Blavatskaya into an aristocratic Russian-German family in Yekaterinoslav, Ukraine, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky traveled widely around the Russian Empire as a child. Largely self-educated, she developed an interest in Western esotericism during her teenage years. According to her later claims, in 1849 she embarked on a series of world travels, visiting Europe, the Americas, and India, claiming that during this period she encountered a group of spiritual adepts, the "Masters of the Ancient Wisdom", who sent her to Shigatse, Tibet, where they trained her to develop a deeper understanding of the synthesis of religion, philosophy and science. Both contemporary critics and later biographers have argued that some or all of these foreign visits were fictitious, and that she spent this period in Europe. By the early 1870s, Blavatsky was involved in the Spiritualist movement; although defending the genuine existence of Spiritualist phenomena, she argued against the mainstream Spiritualist idea that the entities contacted were the spirits of the dead. Relocating to the United States in 1873, she befriended Henry Steel Olcott and rose to public attention as a spirit medium, attention that included public accusations of fraudulence. In New York City, Blavatsky co-founded the Theosophical Society with Olcott and William Quan Judge in 1875. In 1877 she published Isis Unveiled, a book outlining her Theosophical world-view. Associating it closely with the esoteric doctrines of Hermeticism and Neoplatonism, Blavatsky described Theosophy as "the synthesis of science, religion and philosophy", proclaiming that it was reviving an "Ancient Wisdom" which underlay all the world's religions. In 1880 she and Olcott moved to India, where the Society was allied to the Arya Samaj, a Hindu reform movement. That same year, while in Ceylon she and Olcott became the first Westerners to officially convert to Buddhism. Although opposed by the British administration, Theosophy spread rapidly in India but experienced internal problems after Blavatsky was accused of producing fraudulent paranormal phenomena. Amid ailing health, in 1885 she returned to Europe, there establishing the Blavatsky Lodge in London. Here she published The Secret Doctrine, a commentary on what she claimed were ancient Tibetan manuscripts, as well as two further books, The Key to Theosophy and The Voice of the Silence. She died of influenza. Blavatsky was a controversial figure during her lifetime, championed by supporters as an enlightened guru and derided as a fraudulent charlatan and plagiarist by critics. Albert Einstein acknowledged her Wisdom by asserting that whenever he could not find a solution to a given problem, he'd resort to Helena Blavatsky's book The Cosmic Doctrine. Her Theosophical doctrines influenced the spread of Hindu and Buddhist ideas in the West as well as the development of Western esoteric currents like Ariosophy, Anthroposophy, and the New Age Movement. Blavatsky died in the afternoon in Annie Besant's house at 19 Avenue Road in St. John's Wood, London , a victim of The 1889-1890 Pandemic, also known as The Asiatic Flu and The Russian Flu. The date would come to be commemorated by Theosophists ever since as White Lotus Day. According to Gary Lachman, better known as the Bayonne, New Jersey born bassist for the rock band Blondie, Gary Valentine, her body was cremated at Woking Crematorium on May 11, 1891. Her ashes are interred at The Theosophical Society Adyar in Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu, India; part of ashes interred under her statue in Adyar.
