By the end of the 19th century, the sour candy craze had spread all over the U.S. A contributing factor was the sour candy known as Warheads, by the Foreign Candy Company. Their founder, Peter De Yager, actually traveled throughout East Asia - ground zero for sour candy - to find the sourest variety of candy and he found it in Taiwan. In April 1994, South Africans of all races voted for the first time in an election that brought Mandela the presidency of South Africa. He was raised as a Prince Hall Freemason on June 28, 1990, at the M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge North Carolina. Mandela Day died at around 20:50 local time after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection at the age of 95 at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, South Africa, surrounded by his family. July 18/19, AD 64: Conflagrations: Conflagrations In Ancient Rome: The Great Fire Of Rome (Latin: Incendium Magnum Romae): -- The Great Fire Of Rome causes widespread devastation and rages on for six days, destroying half of the city. Differing accounts either blame Emperor Nero for initiating the fire or credit him with organizing measures to contain it and provide relief for refugees. According to Tacitus and later Christians, Nero blamed the devastation on the Christian community in the city, initiating the empire's first persecution against the Christians. The varying historical accounts of the event come from three secondary sources-Cassius Dio, Suetonius and Tacitus. The primary accounts, which possibly included histories written by Fabius Rusticus, Marcus Cluvius Rufus and Pliny the Elder, did not survive. At least five separate stories circulated regarding Nero and the fire: 1) Motivated by a desire to destroy the city, Nero secretly sent out men pretending to be drunk to set fire to the city. Nero watched from his palace on the Palatine Hill singing and playing the lyre; 2) Nero quite openly sent out men to set fire to the city. Nero watched from the Tower of Maecenas on the Esquiline Hill singing and playing the lyre; 3) Nero sent out men to set fire to the city. Nero sang and played his lyre from a private stage; 4) The fire was an accident. Nero was in Antium; and 5) The fire was said to have been caused by the already unpopular Christians. This story was spread in order to blame someone else, because rumor had it that Nero started it. Tacitus describes the fire as beginning in shops where flammable goods were stored, in the region of the Circus neighboring the Caelian and Palatine Hills of Rome. The night was a windy one and the flames rapidly spread along the full length of the Circus. The fire expanded through an area of narrow, twisting streets and closely located apartment blocks. In this lower area of ancient Rome there were no large buildings such as temples, or open areas of ground, to impede the conflagration. It then spread along the Palatine and Caelian slopes. The population fled first to areas unaffected by the fire and then to the open fields and rural roads outside the city. Looters and arsonists were reported to have spread the flames by throwing torches or, acting in groups, to have hindered measures being made to halt or slow the progress of the flames. Tacitus surmises that some may have acted under orders or that they may simply have wanted to plunder unhindered. According to Tacitus, Nero was away from Rome, in Antium, when the fire broke out. He returned to the city and took measures to bring in food supplies and open gardens and public buildings to accommodate refugees. After six days the organized clearing of built-up areas brought the conflagration to a halt before it reached the Esquiline Hill. There was a further outbreak in the Aemilian district, involving the destruction of temples and arcades but less loss of life. However the fire was now under control. According to Tacitus, of Rome's 14 districts, 3 were completely devastated, 7 more were reduced to a few scorched and mangled ruins and only 4 completely escaped damage. It is postulated that the fire had been intentionally started to create room for Nero's Domus Aurea, but the fire started 1 km (0.6 miles) away from the site where this palace would later be built, on the other side of the Palatine Hill. Moreover, the fire destroyed parts of Nero's own palace, the Domus Transitoria. It seems unlikely that Nero wanted to destroy this palace since he actually salvaged some of the marble decoration and integrated it into the new Domus Aurea. Even the paintings and wall decorations of the new palace were similar to the ones that had been burned. Last, the fire started just two days after a full moon, a time that, it is presumed, would not have been chosen by arsonists who prefer the cover of darkness. Due to the sparse mentions of Christian persecution under Nero in Roman historiography (Cassius Dio wrote about the Great Fire but did not mention Christians) and the lack of evidence that Christians were distinguished from Jews at the time, such persecution has been considered by some modern historians as open to question. July 18, 1994: Space: Outer Space: Astronomy: The Solar System: Small Solar System Bodies (SSSBs): Comets: Destroyed Comets: Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (D/1993 F2): -- At 07:33 UTC, the largest impact of Shoemaker-Levy 9, Fragment G, strikes Jupiter, an impact that created a giant dark spot over 12,000 km or 7,500 mi (almost one Earth diameter) across, estimated to have released an energy equivalent to 6,000,000 megatons of TNT (600 times the world's nuclear arsenal). On July 16, 1994, the first fragment of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9's nucleus, fragment A, was destroyed in a head-on collision into Jupiter's southern hemisphere at 20:13 UTC at about 60 km/s (35 mi/s). Instruments on the American robotic space probe Galileo, which was on its way to Jupiter to study the planet and its moons, detected a fireball that reached a peak temperature of about 24,000 K (23,700 dg C; 42,700 dg F), compared to the typical Jovian cloud-top temperature of about 130 K (-143 dg C; -226 dg F). It then expanded and cooled rapidly to about 1,500 K (1,230 dg C; 2,240 dg F). The plume from the fireball quickly reached a height of over 3,000 km (1,900 mi) and was observed by the low Earth orbit Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Over the next six days, 21 distinct impacts were observed, with the largest coming on July 18 at 07:33 UTC when fragment G struck Jupiter. Two impacts 12 hours apart on July 19 created impact marks of similar size to that caused by fragment G, and impacts continued until July 22, when fragment W struck the planet. Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (formally designated D/1993 F2) was a comet that broke apart in July 1992 and collided with Jupiter between July 16 and 22, 1994, providing the first direct observation of an extraterrestrial collision of Solar System objects. This generated a large amount of coverage in the popular media, and the comet was closely observed by astronomers worldwide. The collision provided new information about Jupiter and highlighted its possible role in reducing space debris in the inner Solar System. The comet was discovered by astronomers Carolyn and Eugene M. Shoemaker and David Levy in 1993. Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9) had been captured by Jupiter and was orbiting the planet at the time. It was located on the night of March 24 in a photograph taken with the 46 cm (18 in) Schmidt telescope at the Palomar Observatory in California. It was the first active comet observed to be orbiting a planet, and had probably been captured by Jupiter around 20-30 years earlier. Calculations showed that its unusual fragmented form was due to a previous closer approach to Jupiter in July 1992. At that time, the orbit of Shoemaker-Levy 9 passed within Jupiter's Roche limit, and Jupiter's tidal forces had acted to pull apart the comet. The comet was later observed as a series of fragments ranging up to 2 km (1.2 mi) in diameter. These fragments collided with Jupiter's southern hemisphere at a speed of approximately 60 km/s (37 mi/s) (Jupiter's escape velocity) or 216,000 km/h (134,000 mph). The prominent scars from the impacts were more easily visible than the Great Red Spot and persisted for many months. July 18, 1914: Aviation: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Military Aviation: The Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps: -- The U.S. Congress gives official status to aircraft within the U.S. Army for the first time when it forms The Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps (July 18, 1914 - May 20, 1918) aerial warfare service of the United States, a direct statutory ancestor of the United States Air Force. It absorbed and replaced the Aeronautical Division, Signal Corps, and conducted the activities of Army aviation until its statutory responsibilities were suspended by President Woodrow Wilson on August 26, 1918 due to the service's poor performance and reorganized as the First Army Air Service, a combat divisions of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. The duties of the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps were not resumed following World War I, and it was formally disestablished by the creation of the Air Service in 1920. The Aviation Section organized the first squadrons of the aviation arm and conducted the first military operations by United States aviation on foreign soil. The Aviation Section, Signal Corps was created by the 63rd Congress (Public Law 143) after earlier legislation to make the aviation service independent from the Signal Corps died in committee. From July 1914 until May 1918 the aviation section of the Signal Corps was familiarly known by the title of its administrative headquarters component at the time, seen variously as the Aeronautical Division, Air Division, Division of Military Aeronautics, and others. For historic convenience, however, the air arm is most commonly referred to by its official designation, the Aviation Section, Signal Corps (ASSC), and is the designation recognized by the United States Air Force as its predecessor for this period. The Aviation Section began in turbulence, first as an alternative to making aviation in the Army a corps independent of the Signal Corps, then with friction between its pilots, who were all young and on temporary detail from other branches, and its leadership, who were more established Signal Corps officers and non-pilots. Despite the assignment of Lieutenant Colonel George O. Squier as chief to bring stability to Army aviation, the Signal Corps found itself wholly inadequate to the task of supporting the Army in combat after the United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917. It attempted to expand and organize a competent military service arm, but its efforts were largely chaotic, and in the spring of 1918 the Aviation Section was removed, first from the jurisdiction of the Office of the Chief of Signal where it had resided since its inception, and then from the Signal Corps altogether. July 18, 1921: #BOTD: #HBD! John Glenn, American colonel, United States Marine Corps aviator, engineer, astronaut, the first American to orbit the Earth, circling it three times, and United States Senator from Ohio (d. December 8, 2016) is #born John Herschel Glenn Jr. in Cambridge, Ohio, the son of John Herschel Glenn Sr. (1895-1966), who worked for a plumbing firm, and Clara Teresa Glenn (nee Sproat; 1897-1971), a teacher. Before joining NASA, John Glenn was a distinguished fighter pilot in World War II and Korea with six Distinguished Flying Crosses and eighteen Air Medals. In 1957, he made the first supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States. His on-board camera took the first continuous, panoramic photograph of the United States. He was one of the Mercury Seven, military test pilots selected in 1959 by NASA as the nation's first astronauts. On February 20, 1962, Glenn flew the Friendship 7 mission, becoming the first American to orbit the Earth, the third American and fifth person in history to be in space. He received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1962, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978, was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. Glenn resigned from NASA in January 1964. A member of the Democratic Party, Glenn was first elected to the Senate in 1974 and served for 24 years, until January 1999. In 1998, while still a sitting senator, Glenn flew on Space Shuttle Discovery's STS-95 mission, making him the oldest person to enter Earth orbit at age 77, and the only person to fly in both the Mercury and the Space Shuttle programs. Glenn, both the oldest and the last surviving member of the Mercury Seven, died at the age of 95 at the OSU Wexner Medical Center; no cause of death was disclosed. After his death, his body lay in state at the Ohio Statehouse. There was a memorial service at Mershon Auditorium at Ohio State University. Another memorial service was performed at Kennedy Space Center near the Heroes and Legends building. His body was interred at Arlington National Cemetery on April 6, 2017. July 6, 1747) #dies of kidney failure aged 45 in Paris, France while on his way as a U.S. Consul to treat with the Dey of Algiers for the release of American captives. A small procession of servants, friends and loyal family walked his body four miles (6.4 km) for burial. He was buried in Paris at the Saint Louis Cemetery, which belonged to the French royal family. Four years later, France's revolutionary government sold the property and the cemetery was forgotten. In 1905, Jones's remains were identified by U.S. Ambassador to France Gen. Horace Porter, who had searched for six years to track down the body using faulty copies of Jones's burial record. John Paul Jones was born on July 6, 1747 on the estate of Arbigland near Kirkbean in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright on the southwest coast of Scotland. He was the United States' first well-known naval commander in the American Revolutionary War. He made many friendss (including John Hancock and Benjamin Franklin), and enemies who accused him of piracy, among America' political elites, and his actions in British waters during the Revolution earned him an international reputation which persists to this day. July 18, 1913: #BOTD: #HBD! Red Skelton, American actor, comedian, clown and Freemason (d. September 17, 1997) is #born Richard Bernard Skelton in Vincennes, Indiana. He was best known for his national radio and television shows between 1937 and 1971, especially as host of the television program The Red Skelton Show. He has stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work in radio and television, and also appeared in burlesque, vaudeville, films, nightclubs, and casinos, all while he pursued an entirely separate career as an artist. Skelton began developing his comedic and pantomime skills from the age of 10, when he became part of a traveling medicine show. He then spent time on a showboat, worked the burlesque circuit, and then entered into vaudeville in 1934. The "Doughnut Dunkers" pantomime sketch, which he wrote together with his wife, launched a career for him in vaudeville, radio, and films. His radio career began in 1937 with a guest appearance on The Fleischmann's Yeast Hour, which led to his becoming the host of Avalon Time in 1938. He became the host of The Raleigh Cigarette Program in 1941, on which many of his comedy characters were created, and he had a regularly scheduled radio program until 1957. Skelton made his film debut in 1938 alongside Ginger Rogers and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in Alfred Santell's Having Wonderful Time, and would appear in numerous musical and comedy films throughout the 1940s and 1950s, with starring roles in 19 films, including Ship Ahoy (1941), I Dood It (1943), Ziegfeld Follies (1946), and The Clown (1953). Skelton was eager to work in television, even when the medium was in its infancy. The Red Skelton Show made its television premiere on September 30, 1951, on NBC. By 1954, Skelton's program moved to CBS, where it was expanded to one hour and renamed The Red Skelton Hour in 1962. Despite high ratings, the show was canceled by CBS in 1970, as the network believed that more youth-oriented programs were needed to attract younger viewers and their spending power. Skelton moved his program to NBC, where he completed his last year with a regularly scheduled television show in 1971. He spent his time after that making as many as 125 personal appearances a year and working on his paintings. Skelton's artwork of clowns remained a hobby until 1964, when his wife Georgia persuaded him to show it at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas while he was performing there. Sales of his originals were successful, and he also sold prints and lithographs, earning 2.5M USD yearly on lithograph sales. At the time of his death, his art dealer said he thought that Skelton had earned more through his paintings than from his television performances. Skelton believed that his life's work was to make people laugh; he wanted to be known as a clown because he defined it as being able to do everything. He had a 70-year-long career as a performer and entertained three generations of Americans. His widow donated many of his personal and professional effects to Vincennes University, including prints of his artwork. They are part of the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy at Vincennes. Skelton was a Freemason, a member of Vincennes Lodge No. 1, in Indiana. He also was a member of both the Scottish and the York Rite. He was a recipient of the Gold Medal of the General Grand Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, for Distinguished Service in the Arts and Sciences. On September 24, 1969, he received the honorary 33rd degree in the Scottish Rite and was a Gourgas Medal recipient in 1995. Skelton became interested in Masonry as a small boy selling newspapers in Vincennes, when a man bought a paper from him with a 5 USD bill and told him to keep the change. The young Skelton asked his benefactor why he had given him so much; the man explained that he was a Mason and Masons are taught to give. Skelton decided to become one also when he was grown. He was also member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, as well as a Shriner in Los Angeles. Red Skelton died at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California, at the age of 84, after what was described as "a long, undisclosed illness". He is interred in the Skelton Family Tomb, the family's private room, alongside his son, Richard Freeman Skelton, Jr., and his second wife, Georgia Maureen Davis Skelton, in the Great Mausoleum's Sanctuary of Benediction at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. The follow-up album, The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back!, was also a massive success, and the two albums held the Billboard number one and number two spots simultaneously. Newhart later went into acting, starring as Chicago psychologist Dr. Robert Hartley in The Bob Newhart Show during the 1970s and then as Vermont innkeeper Dick Loudon on the 1980s series Newhart. Newhart also appeared in film roles such as Major Major in Catch-22 and Papa Elf in Elf. July 18, 1997: #DOTD: #RIP: Roby Yonge, American radio DJ, most notable in the 1960s, best known for being fired from New York City station WABC-AM in 1969, after he reported over the air that the singer Paul McCartney might have died, circulating the now infamous Paul Is Dead folktale saga and conspiracy theory (b. July 25, 1943) #dies at his home in Miami, Florida of an apparent heart attack, age 54. Roby Yonge was born in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and grew up in Ocala, Florida. He got his first radio job at WTMC 1290 Ocala, Florida when he was 15 years old. Roby's first Miami, Florida job was as a newsman at WIOD, which was then WCKR. By the mid 1960s Roby was working for Top 40 WQAM, Miami, Florida, where his on-air nickname was "The Big Kahuna", until hired in New York City at WABC. On October 21, 1969, Roby Yonge went on the air with the Paul McCartney "death" rumor on WABC-AM during his overnight radio show, having heard the rumor from kids calling in from a college in Indiana, and as revenge for not having his contract renewed. In December 1967, Yonge moved to New York and WABC. Originally hired for the 1-3 PM shift, Yonge was moved into the overnight shift in August 1969 when Charlie Greer left the station. He was told by WABC program director Rick Sklar, in the early fall of that year, that his contract was up in two weeks and would not be renewed. Roby then told Sklar, "I won't be in anymore but you'll be famous in the morning". He subsequently went on the air and stated that his contract would not be renewed, and that since it was 12:39 AM, he would not be cut off the air because there was nobody around to cut him. Yonge then began to speculate on rumors circulating about the possible death of McCartney. He never said that Paul was dead, but rather enumerated various "clues" in album cover art and within certain songs, some played backwards with clues like "Paul Is Dead" and "I buried Paul" which he said had been catalogued by thirty Indiana University Bloomington students. Callers lit up the station switchboard. Since all the phone lines were jammed with thousands of calls, Rick Sklar could not get through to the station and it was an hour and a half before Program Director Sklar arrived at the station in his bath robe. He got Les Marshak the newsman on duty in the adjacent studio to relieve Yonge and Sklar told Roby, "When you come in tomorrow to do your show, I don't want you to talk any more about this McCartney might be dead rumor". The next day, many newspapers nationwide carried the story about the "is Paul dead" rumor and Roby Yonge. In an interview with his friend John Paul Roberts ("JPR"), former WQAM DJ, Roby said this about the Paul McCartney rumor, "I never said the guy is dead, and I don't say it now, but there's reason to believe something is going on". Les Marshak continued to do Yonge's show on WABC until a replacement was hired. Sklar's reach did not cross radio bands, as, less than three weeks later, on November 14, 1969, former WABC DJ Bob "Bob-a-loo" Lewis did a full production "Paul Is Dead" show on WABC-FM, putting forth many of the same assertions about McCartney's supposed death that had resulted in Yonge being yanked off the air. Yonge was hired by WCBS-FM, where he helped introduce the "Oldies" format of popular songs to that station. After a few years, he returned to Florida, where he served as general manager of Mother WMUM, an early FM rock station in Palm Beach. After the demise of Mother in 1972, Yonge became a morning personality on Y100 WHYI-FM in Fort Lauderdale/Miami. He was fired after the first day on the air, August 3, 1973 by WHYI National Program Director Buzz Bennett, who Roby had a personality conflict with. The next day he moved to the competitor WMYQ, where he did the morning show. In 1987, Yonge did a morning show at WKAT in Miami, then returned in 1993 to do a music/talk show on 790 WMRZ. Virgil Earp, both deputy U.S. Marshal and Tombstone, Arizona City Marshal when he led his younger brothers Wyatt and Morgan, and Doc Holliday, in a confrontation with outlaw Cowboys at the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral which killed killed the outlaw brothers Tom and Frank McLaury and their partner-in-crim Billy Clanton on October 26, 1881 (d. October 19, 1905) is #born Virgil Walter Earp in Hartford, Kentucky. Virgil married before he left to serve in the Union Army during the American Civil War. When he returned, his wife and child had left. He held a variety of other jobs throughout his life, though he primarily worked in law enforcement. His younger brother Wyatt, who spent most of his life as a gambler, became better known as a lawman because of writer Stuart N. Lake's fictionalized 1931 biography Wyatt Earp: Frontier Marshal and later portrayals of him in movies and fiction as Old West's "toughest and deadliest gunmen of his day." All three Earp brothers had been the target of repeated death threats made by the Cowboys who were upset by the Earps' interference in their illegal activities. All four lawmen were charged with murder by Ike Clanton, who had run from the gunfight. During a month-long preliminary hearing, Judge Wells Spicer exonerated the men, concluding they had been performing their duty. But two months later on December 28, friends of the slain outlaws retaliated, ambushing Virgil. They shot him in the back, hitting him with three shotgun rounds, shattering his left arm and leaving him permanently maimed. The Cowboys suspected were let off for lack of evidence. His brother Morgan Earp was assassinated in March 1882. Charges against those suspected were dismissed on a technicality. Wyatt Earp, appointed as deputy U.S. Marshal to replace Virgil, concluded he could not rely on civil justice and decided to take matters into his own hands. Wyatt assembled a federal posse that included their brother Warren Earp and set out on a vendetta to kill those they felt were responsible. Virgil left Tombstone to recuperate from his wounds in Colton, California where his parents lived. In 1898, Virgil learned that his first wife Ellen Rysdam and their daughter were living in Oregon and reestablished contact with them. After suffering from pneumonia for six months, Virgil Earp died of a relapse of pneumonia at St. Mary's hospital in Goldfield, Nevada, aged 62. In the memoirs of Earp's common-law wife, Alvira "Allie" Earp, she wrote that Virgil's last words were, "Light my cigar, and stay here and hold my hand." His brother Wyatt was the last surviving participant of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Virgil was also survived by his father Nicholas, brothers James and Newton, wife Allie, and daughter Nellie. At the request of his daughter, Nellie Jane Bohn, Allie sent his body to Portland, Oregon, and he was buried in the River View Cemetery there. July 18, 452: The Huns: The Hunnic Invasions: The Hunnic Invasion Of Italy: The Sack Of Aquileia: -- The peace Attila The Hun agreed to, following his June 8, 452 Invasion Of Italy, did not prevent him conducting The Sack Of Aquileia, an ancient Roman city in Italy at the head of the Adriatic Sea, during his retreat. A year after the Battle of Catalaunian Fields, Attila launched his Hunnic Invasion Of Italy, passing through Pannonia into Venetia, where he laid siege to Aquileia. Jordanes states that the city was well defended, to the point where Attila considered withdrawing. Indeed, Ian Hughes suggests that since Aetius was unable to blockade the Julian Alps, he instead reinforced the city garrison to force Attila into a siege, or otherwise risk Roman forces cutting off his potential retreat. The siege lasted for some time, and Jordanes states that as Attila was considering withdrawing, the city fell in a renewed assault and he razed it to the ground. Before its destruction, Aquileia was a center of government (with an imperial residence), commerce and finance (with a mint), military defense, and Christianity (with a bishop). Its destruction and Attila's subsequent unimpeded ravaging of the province of Venetia (modern Veneto and Friuli) paved the way for the rise of Venice, which within a few centuries replaced and even surpassed it in importance. Attila then proceeded to raid Italy, with Aetius able to do little more than harass Attila at best. It was only when an embassy including Pope Leo I arrived that Attila finally ended his invasion, likely as a result of famine, disease, and an Eastern Roman Army approaching the Hunnic settlements near the Tisza. This sack appears as part of the final scenario in the Attila the Hun campaign in the Microsoft computer game Age of Empires II: The Conquerors. The destruction of Aquileia also figures prominently into the background of several characters in the novel The Last Legion. July 18, 1925: First Publications: -- Adolf Hitler publishes Mein Kampf (German: My Struggle), an autobiographical book by Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler. The work describes the process by which Hitler became antisemitic and outlines his political ideology and future plans for Germany. Volume 1 of Mein Kampf was published in 1925 and Volume 2 in 1926. The book was edited by Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess. Hitler began Mein Kampf while imprisoned for what he considered to be "political crimes" following his failed Putsch in Munich in November 1923. Although Hitler received many visitors initially, he soon devoted himself entirely to the book. As he continued, Hitler realized that it would have to be a two-volume work, with the first volume scheduled for release in early 1925. The governor of Landsberg noted at the time that "he [Hitler] hopes the book will run into many editions, thus enabling him to fulfill his financial obligations and to defray the expenses incurred at the time of his trial." The book was a bestseller in Germany during the 1930s. July 18, 1100: #DOTD: #RIP: Godfrey Of Bouillon, Lord Of Bouillon from 1076, Duke Of Lower Lorraine from 1087, Frankish knight, one of the leaders of the First Crusade from 1096 until its conclusion in 1099 (b. c. 1016) #dies under uncertain circumstances. The Arab chronicler Ibn al-Qalanisi reported that "In this year [1099], Godfrey, lord of Jerusalem, appeared before the fortified port of 'Akka [Acre] and made an assault upon it, but was struck by an arrow, which killed him". While this claim is repeated in other Muslim sources, it does not appear in Christian chronicles; Albert of Aix and Ekkehard of Aura suggest Godfrey fell ill while visiting the city of Caesarea in the Sharon plain on the coast of the Eastern Mediterranean in what is now Israel during June 1100, and died in Jerusalem, aged 83 or 84. Suggestions he was poisoned are unlikely and it is more probable he died from a disease similar to typhoid. He is buried in The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem; the tomb was destroyed during a 1808 fire along with other Crusader tombs, but The "Sword Of Godfrey Of Bouillon" has since been displayed at the Church. . Godfrey Of Bouillon was probably born in Boulogne-sur-Mer (Boulogne) in Northern France, although one 13th-century chronicler cites Baisy, a town in what is now Walloon Brabant, Belgium, the second son of Eustace II, Count of Boulogne and Ida, daughter of the Lotharingian duke Godfrey the Bearded and his first wife, Doda. Godfrey never married. After the successful Siege Of Jerusalem in 1099, Godfrey became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. He refused the title of King, however, as he believed that the true King of Jerusalem was Christ, preferring the title of Advocate (i.e., protector or defender) of the Holy Sepulchre (Latin: Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri). He later took his mother's last name, Yevtushenko. Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Yevtushenko was also a novelist, essayist, dramatist, screenwriter, publisher, actor, editor and director of several films. He was personally well liked, and his art well regarded, in the west both during and after the Cold War. Yevgeny Yevtushenko died peacefully in his sleep of heart failure on the morning of April Fool's Day 2017 aged 83 at the Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He had been diagnosed with cancer about six years before and that he had undergone surgery to remove part of a kidney, but the disease had recently returned. His wife, Maria Novikova, and their two sons, Dmitry and Yevgeny, were reportedly with him when he died. He is buried at Peredelkino Cemetery in Moscow, Russian Federation. Authorized by the Emancipation Proclamation, the regiment consisted of African American enlisted men commanded by white officers. The unit began recruiting in February 1863 and trained at Camp Meigs on the outskirts of Boston, Massachusetts. Prominent abolitionists were active in recruitment efforts, including Frederick Douglass, whose two sons were among the first to enlist. Massachusetts Governor John Albion Andrew, who had long pressured the U.S. Department of War to begin recruiting African Americans, placed a high priority on the formation of the 54th Massachusetts. Andrew appointed Robert Gould Shaw, the son of Boston abolitionists, to command the regiment as Colonel. The free black community in Boston was also instrumental in recruiting efforts, utilizing networks reaching beyond Massachusetts and even into the southern states to attract soldiers and fill out the ranks. After its departure from Massachusetts on May 28, 1863, the 54th Massachusetts was shipped to Beaufort, South Carolina and became part of the X Corps commanded by Major General David Hunter. During its service with the X Corps, the 54th Massachusetts took part in operations against Charleston, South Carolina, including the Battle of Grimball's Landing on July 16, 1863, and the more famous Second Battle Of Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863. During the latter engagement, the 54th Massachusetts, with other Union regiments, executed a frontal assault against Fort Wagner and suffered casualties of 20 killed, 125 wounded, and 102 missing (primarily presumed dead)-roughly 40 percent of the unit's numbers at that time. Col. Robert G. Shaw was killed on the parapet of Fort Wagner. In 1864, as part of the Union Army's Department of Florida, the 54th Massachusetts took part in the Battle of Olustee. The service of the 54th Massachusetts, particularly their charge at Fort Wagner, soon became one of the most famous episodes of the war, interpreted through artwork, poetry and song. The story of the 54th Massachusetts is dramatized in the 1989 film Glory, starring Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington. ========= July 18, 1863: Sergeant William Harvey Carney's becomes a hero in the July 18, 1863 assault on Fort Wagner in Charleston, South Carolina as a memeber of the African American 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, resulting in his becoming the first Black soldier to receive the Medal Of Honor for his bravery when he is given the award on May 23, 1900, 37 years after the fact. He had joined the 54th Massachusetts regiment four months prior to the Second Battle Of Fort Wagner, in March 1963. When the color guard (a prestigious detachment of soldiers assigned to the protection of regimental colours and the national flag) was killed, Carney retrieved the U.S. flag and marched forward with it, despite serious wounds. When the Union troops were forced to retreat under fire, he struggled back across the battlefield, eventually returning to his own lines and turning over the colors to another survivor of the 54th, saying, "Boys, I only did my duty; the old flag never touched the ground!" He was promoted from private to sergeant in recognition of his heroism. This action for which he received the Medal Of Honor preceded that of any other African American Medal Of Honor recipient; however, his medal was actually one of the last to be awarded for Civil War service. Carney received his Medal Of Honor nearly 37 years after the events at Fort Wagner (more than half of such awards from the Civil War were presented 20 or more years after the fact). In 1901, shortly after his medal was awarded, a song was published about his daring exploits: "Boys The Old Flag Never Touched The Ground". William Harvey Carney (February 29, 1840 - December 9, 1908) was born as a slave in Norfolk, Virginia. How he made his way to freedom is not certain. According to most accounts, he escaped through the Underground Railroad, and joined his father in Massachusetts. Other members of their family were freed by purchase or by the death of their master. After his discharge, Carney returned to New Bedford, Massachusetts, and took a job maintaining the city's streetlights. He spent a few years in California, then returned again in 1869. He then delivered mail for thirty-two years. He was a founding vice president of the New Bedford Branch 18 of the National Association of Letter Carriers, in 1890. He married Susannah Williams, and they had a daughter, Clara Heronia. Carney died at the Boston City Hospital aged 68 of complications from an elevator accident at the Massachusetts State House, where he worked for the Department of State. His body lay in repose for one day at the undertaking rooms of Walden Banks, 142 Lenox Street, at the wish of his wife and daughter. He was buried in the family plot at Oak Grove Cemetery in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Engraved on his tombstone is an image of the Medal Of Honor. A New Bedford, Massachusetts, elementary school was named in his honor, and his New Bedford home at 128 Mill Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. His statue, along with Private Milton L. Olive, is seen on the African American Medal Of Honor Recipients Memorial in Wilmington, Delaware. Sgt. Carney's statue is also prominently featured in his hometown at West Point Cemetery (Norfolk, Virginia), atop a monument to African American Civil War and Spanish American War veterans. Immediately after the shooting, about 300 students from Powell's school who were informed by the principal rallied. The shooting set off six consecutive nights of rioting that affected the New York City neighborhoods of Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant. In total, 4,000 New Yorkers participated in the riots which led to attacks on the New York City Police Department (NYPD), vandalism, and looting in stores. Several protesters were severely beaten by NYPD officers. At the end of the conflict, reports counted one dead rioter, 118 injured, and 465 arrested. The Ghetto Riots were as series of outbreaks of violent summer social unrest by African American groups across the United States in the mid-to-late 1960s. The six days of unrest throughout New York City during The Harlem Riot Of 1964 is viewed as the first of clusters of riots, uncoordinated with each other, evidently unplanned, most often in cities during the summer months. July 18, 1942: Aviation: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Military Aviation: Maiden Flights: -- The Germans test fly the Messerschmitt Me 262 using its jet engines for the first time. The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe (German: "Swallow") in fighter versions, or Sturmvogel (German: "Storm Bird") in fighter-bomber versions, was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. Design work started before World War II began, but problems with engines, metallurgy and top-level interference kept the aircraft from operational status with the Luftwaffe until mid-1944. The Me 262 was faster and more heavily armed than any Allied fighter, including the British jet-powered Gloster Meteor. One of the most advanced aviation designs in operational use during World War II, the Me 262's roles included light bomber, reconnaissance and experimental night fighter versions. Me 262 pilots claimed a total of 542 Allied aircraft shot down, although higher claims are sometimes made. The Allies countered its effectiveness in the air by attacking the aircraft on the ground and during takeoff and landing. Strategic materials shortages and design compromises on the Junkers Jumo 004 axial-flow turbojet engines led to reliability problems. Attacks by Allied forces on fuel supplies during the deteriorating late-war situation also reduced the effectiveness of the aircraft as a fighting force. Armament production within Germany was focused on more easily manufactured aircraft. In the end, the Me 262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war as a result of its late introduction and the consequently small numbers put in operational service. While German use of the aircraft ended with the close of World War II, a small number were operated by the Czechoslovak Air Force until 1951. It also heavily influenced several designs, such as Sukhoi Su-9 (1946) and Nakajima Kikka. Captured Me 262s were studied and flight tested by the major powers, and ultimately influenced the designs of post-war aircraft such as the North American F-86 Sabre, MiG-15 and Boeing B-47 Stratojet. Several aircraft survive on static display in museums, and there are several privately built flying reproductions that use modern General Electric J85 engines. July 18, 1967: Aviation: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Military Aviation: Aircraft Service Entries: -- The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark supersonic medium-range multirole combat aircraft enters service. Production variants of the retired F-111 had roles that included ground attack (e.g. interdiction), strategic bombing (including nuclear weapons capabilities), reconnaissance and electronic warfare. Developed in the 1960s by General Dynamics, the F-111 entered service in 1967 with the United States Air Force (USAF). The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) also ordered the type and began operating the F-111C variant in 1973. The F-111 pioneered several technologies for production aircraft, including variable-sweep wings, afterburning turbofan engines, and automated terrain-following radar for low-level, high-speed flight. Its design influenced later variable-sweep wing aircraft, and some of its advanced features have since become commonplace. The F-111 suffered a variety of problems during initial development. A fighter variant, the F-111B, was not accepted for production. The F-111B was intended to perform aircraft carrier-based roles with the US Navy, including long-range interception. USAF F-111s were retired during the 1990s with the F-111Fs in 1996 and EF-111s in 1998. The F-111 was replaced in USAF service by the F-15E Strike Eagle for medium-range precision strike missions, while the supersonic bomber role has been assumed by the B-1B Lancer. The RAAF continued to operate the type until December 2010, when the last F-111C was retired. The name Aardvark was derived from perceived similarities of the aircraft to the animal of the same name: a long nose and low-level, terrain-following capabilities. July 2, 1989) is #born Andrei Andreyevich Gromyko to a poor "semi-peasant, semi-worker" Belarusian family in the Belarusian village of Staryye Gromyki, Mogilev Governorate, Russian Empire (now Gomel, Belarus). Gromyko was responsible for many top decisions on Soviet foreign policy until he retired in 1988. In the 1940s Western pundits called him Mr. Nyet ("Mr. No") or "Grim Grom", because of his frequent use of the Soviet veto in the United Nations Security Council as the Soviet Permanent Representative To The United Nations. Gromyko's political career started in 1939 with his employment at the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs (renamed Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1946). He became the Soviet ambassador to the United States in 1943, leaving in 1946 to become the Soviet Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Upon his return to the Soviet Union he became a Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and later the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. He went on to become the Soviet ambassador to the United Kingdom in 1952. As the Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union, Gromyko played a direct role in the Cuban Missile Crisis and later helped negotiate arms limitations treaties such as the ABM Treaty, the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, SALT I and SALT II, among others. Under the rule of Leonid Brezhnev, Gromyko helped build the policy of detente between the US and the USSR. As Brezhnev's health declined during the last 7 years of his leadership, Gromyko formed a troika with KGB Chairman Yuri Andropov and Defense Minister Dmitriy Ustinov that increasingly dominated decision-making in Moscow. Henceforth, Gromyko's conservatism and hardline attitudes towards the West dictated the course of Soviet foreign policy until the rise of Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985. Following Gorbachev's election as General Secretary, Gromyko lost his office as foreign minister and was appointed to the largely ceremonial office of head of state. July 18, 1887: #BOTD: Vidkun Quisling, Norwegian military officer and politician, Minister President of Norway during the Nazi German occupation, and traitor (d. October 24, 1945) is #born Vidkun Abraham Lauritz Jonsson Quisling in Fyresdal, in the Norwegian county of Telemark, Sweden-Norway. Quisling nominally headed the government of Norway during the occupation of the country by Nazi Germany during World War II. He first came to international prominence as a close collaborator of explorer Fridtjof Nansen, organizing humanitarian relief during the Russian famine of 1921 in Povolzhye. He was posted as a Norwegian diplomat to the Soviet Union, and for some time also managed British diplomatic affairs there. He returned to Norway in 1929, and served as Minister of Defence in the governments of Peder Kolstad (1931-32) and Jens Hundseid (1932-33), representing the Farmers' Party. In 1933, Quisling left the Farmers' Party and founded the fascist party Nasjonal Samling (National Union). Although he achieved some popularity after his attacks on the political left, his party failed to win any seats in the Storting and by 1940 it was still little more than peripheral. On 9 April 1940, with the German invasion of Norway in progress, he attempted to seize power in the world's first radio-broadcast coup d'etat, but failed after the Germans refused to support his government. From 1942 to 1945 he served as Prime Minister of Norway, heading the Norwegian state administration jointly with the German civilian administrator Josef Terboven. His pro-Nazi puppet government, known as the Quisling regime, was dominated by ministers from Nasjonal Samling. The collaborationist government participated in Germany's genocidal Final Solution. Quisling's domestic and international reputation both hit new lows, casting him as both a traitor and a failure. Quisling was put on trial during the legal purge in Norway after World War II. He was found guilty of charges including embezzlement, murder and high treason against the Norwegian state, and was sentenced to death. He was executed by firing squad at Akershus Fortress, Oslo, on October 4, 1945. He is buried in Gjerpen Cemetery in Skien, Telemark Fylke, Norway. July 18, 1942: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The German Occupation Of Norway: The Quisling Regime The Quisling Government, Den Nasjonale Regjering (Norwegian: "The National Government"): The Beisfjord Massacre (Norwegian: Beisfjord-Massakren): -- 15 Norwegian guards of The Hirden, Occupied Norway's paramilitary forces, help members of the Nazi SS to kill 288 Yugoslavian political prisoners and POWs in Beisfjord, Norway. The massacre had been ordered a few days earlier by the Reichskommissar for Norway Josef Terboven. In order to build defences in Norway against the Allies, the Germans brought in around 5,000 Yugoslavian political prisoners and prisoners-of-war-in addition to prisoners of other nationalities-to work as forced labour on infrastructure projects.[2] In the summer of 1942 a number of prisoners started arriving in North Norway as a result of the transfer of prisoners from the new Croatian puppet regime to German authorities who needed manpower for projects in Norway. This acquisition of manpower for projects in Norway was under Organisation Todt Einsatzgruppe Wiking. On June 24, 1942, 900 Yugoslav prisoners arrived at the Fagernes Pier in Narvik. "They start to walk the ten kilometer long road to Beisfjord" (...) Five prisoners are hit, and die along the road, and one is shot and killed" before the prisoners arrive at the location where a prison camp was established. On July 12, 1942 "some German officers, a German- and a Norwegian physician came for an inspection of the camp" (...) The SS officers' suspicion of typhoid fever was confirmed by this [Norwegian] doctor. Typhoid fever must be diagnosed thru blood- or stool samples. (...) The physical symptoms that the prisoners had, concurred, but neither the Norwegian- or German MD took blood tests. The Norwegian doctor picked out 85 prisoners who allegedly had typhoid fever. He supposedly did not examine them thoroughly, but [he] picked out the prisoners from a distance because they looked frail. They were immediately sent to the infirmary". The Beisfjord camp was quarantined by the SS on July 15, 1942 allegedly to avoid an outbreak of typhus. According to Ljubo Mladjenovic (a former prisoner) in his 1989 book, conditions at the camp were unhealthy and there was an outbreak of typhus. Prisoners with various illnesses were moved into two barracks, which were surrounded by barbed wire. On the evening of 17 July, the 588 "prisoners regarded as healthy" were marched out of the camp by nearly all of the Norwegian guards and some German superiors. The remaining "weak and exhausted" prisoners (in Beisfjord) were ordered to dig graves and then ordered into standing positions where they would drop into the grave after the guards had shot them. These 288 prisoners were killed in groups of twenty. Those prisoners who could not stand on their own feet, were left in the two barracks and these were then doused in gasoline and set on fire. Some sources say that a number of prisoners refused to leave the infirmary, and the building was set ablaze; those who jumped out of the windows were shot. Those who tried to escape the conflagration, were shot by a machine gun in the watch tower. Seventeen Norwegian guards were present and played a role during the massacre. (The guard staff of the camp consisted of around 150 men from Ordnungspolizei-controlled by the SS-and around 50 Norwegian guards who were volunteers. On the evening of July 17, the 588 "prisoners regarded as healthy" were marched out of the Beisfjord Camp by nearly all of the Norwegian guards and some German superiors. Their destination was 30 km (19 mi) north-east - Bjornefjell. At Bjornfjell they were quarantined, and the camp at Ovre Jernvann was established. "On 22 July, two days after arrival at Bjornfjell, all the prisoners had to run around the camp six times. Those prisoners who were not able, were shot." 10 prisoners were picked out and shot "farther down by the lake" [Jernvann]. Runs of this kind were held at other times, resulting in deaths every time. After five weeks on the mountain, 242 prisoners were dead. "The last 43 were [those classified as] sick who were shot" during the hike back to Beisfjord. In the spring of 1946 "seven of the circa twenty SS officers that worked at the camps at Beisfjord and Ovre Jernvann, were arrested and transported to Beograd" (...) Hume Cronyn, distinquished Canadian-American actor of stage, film and television, producer, and screenwriter with a lengthy career, often appearing professionally alongside Jessica Tandy, his wife of over fifty years. (d. June 15, 2003) is #born Hume Blake Cronyn Jr. in London, Ontario, Canada into a prominent Canadian family. His father was politician Hume Blake Cronyn (1864-1933), Member of Parliament for London, Ontario (term 1917-1921). The elder Cronyn was a grandson of both Benjamin Cronyn, first bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Huron (1802-1871) and politician William Hume Blake (1809-1870), first Chancellor of Upper Canada. Cronyn's mother was Frances Amelia Labatt, heiress of the Labatt Brewing Company. Labatt remains the largest brewing company of Canada. Frances' father was businessman John Labatt (1838-1915), and her grandfather was company founder John Kinder Labatt (1803-1866). The Labatts were a prominent Irish-Canadian family, claiming descent from a French Huguenot family which settled in Ireland. Hume Blake Cronyn Jr. OC was sent to a boarding school in Ottawa, where he studied from 1917 to 1921. The school was at the time called "Rockliffe Preparatory School", but has since been renamed to Elmwood School. Cronyn attended first Ridley College in St. Catharines, and then McGill University in Montreal. During his university years, Cronyn was a featherweight boxer. He was nominated for Canada's Olympic Boxing team for the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Cronyn was studying pre-law in the University, but switched his major to acting. He then enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he studied under theatrical director Max Reinhardt (1873-1943). Cronyn made his Broadway debut in 1934, in the play "Hipper's Holiday". He had the minor role of a janitor. After a decade as a theatrical actor, Cronyn made his film debut in the psychological thriller "Shadow of a Doubt" (1943). He played crime fiction buff Herbie Hawkins. This was Cronyn's first collaboration with director Alfred Hitchcock. Cronyn later acted in "Lifeboat" (1944), and served as a screenwriter for both "Rope" (1948) and "Under Capricorn" (1949). Cronyn was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Paul Roeder in the concentration camp themed film "The Seventh Cross" (1942). Roeder is a common factory worker in Nazi Germany, who risks his life and family to assist his old friend George Heisler (played by Spencer Tracy) to flee the country. In 1942, Cronyn married actress Jessica Tandy, and for many years they appeared together in theatre, film and television. The duo headlined the radio series "The Marriage" (1953-1954), depicting the difficulties of a professional woman in transitioning to the roles of housewife and mother. The duo also appeared in a television adaptation of the radio series, but it only lasted for 8 episodes. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree (LLD) by the University of Western Ontario on October 26, 1974. His wife, Jessica Tandy, was given the same degree on the same day. In 1979, Cronyn was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. He won a Drama Desk Special Award in 1986. Cronyn acting career mostly included supporting roles, but he found himself in the spotlight for the role of Joe Finley in the science fiction film "Cocoon". It became a surprise box office hit, and Cronyn was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Actor. On July 11, 1988, he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada, giving him the post nominal letters "OC" for life. Cronyn returned to the role of Joe Finley in the sequel "Cocoon: The Return" (1988). While less successful than its predecessor, Cronyn's role was well-received. He was again nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Actor. In 1990, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. He also received the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal in 1992. Jessica Tandy died in 1994, and the widowed Cronyn married writer Susan Cooper in 1996. Cronyn had one of his last prominent roles in the film "Marvin's Room" (1996). He played the incapacitated and bed-ridden Marvin Wakefield, who has to be taken care of by his adult daughters. The cast of the film was collectively nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Cronyn was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 1999. Cronyn's last film role was the role of con-artist Sam Clausner in the television film "Off Season" (2001). He received the Canadian version of the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. He played the lead role of Terry Lee in the 1940 movie serial Terry and the Pirates. In the 1950s, Tracy primarily did television work, where his most notable role was "Hotshot Charlie" in the 1953 TV series version of Terry and the Pirates. He is perhaps best known for the role of Pepi Katona, the delivery boy, in The Shop Around the Corner (1940). He starred in the John Ford film Tobacco Road (1941), and appeared in Brother Rat (1938) and Alfred Hitchcock's Mr. and Mrs. Smith (1941). In 1940, Tracy began a recurring role as Sgt. Dorian "Dodo" Doubleday in eight films teamed with Joe Sawyer as Sgt. Ames, the first six for Hal Roach's Streamliners service comedies, beginning with Tanks a Million (1941). This B-movie comedy was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Musical Score. The last two were for Lippert Pictures, concluding with Mr. Walkie Talkie (1952) being set during the Korean War. On the June 14, 1951 episode of the radio series Suspense, The Truth About Jerry Baxter, the 33-year-old Tracy played the title character, a teenage marijuana addict. September 18, 1920) #dies of heart and kidney failure in a New York City hospital at the age of 85. He is buried at The Cathedral Church Of Saint John The Divine in Manhattan, New York City. Jack Warden was born John Warden Lebzelter Jr. in Newark, New Jersey, the son of Laura M. (nee Costello) and John Warden Lebzelter, who was an engineer and technician, a family of Pennsylvania Dutch (German) and Irish ancestry. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Shampoo (1975) and Heaven Can Wait (1978). He received a BAFTA nomination for the former, and won an Emmy for his performance in Brian's Song (1971). Raised in Louisville, Kentucky, he was expelled from high school for fighting and eventually fought as a professional boxer under the name Johnny Costello. He fought in 13 bouts as a welterweight, but earned little money. Warden worked as a nightclub bouncer, tugboat deckhand, and lifeguard, before joining the United States Navy in 1938. He was stationed for three years in China with the Yangtze Patrol. In 1941, he joined the United States Merchant Marine, but he quickly tired of the long convoy runs, and in 1942, he moved to the United States Army, where he served as a paratrooper in the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, with the 101st Airborne Division in World War II. In 1944, on the eve of the D-Day invasion (in which many of his friends died), Warden, then a staff sergeant, shattered his leg when he landed in a tree during a night-time practice jump in England. He spent almost eight months in the hospital recuperating, during which time he read a Clifford Odets play and decided to become an actor. Notably, Warden later portrayed a paratrooper from the 101st's rivals - the 82nd Airborne Division - in That Kind of Woman. After leaving the armed services, he moved to New York City and studied acting on the G.I. Bill. He joined the company of the Dallas Alley Theatre and performed on stage for five years. In 1948, he made his television debut on the anthology series The Philco Television Playhouse and also appeared on the series Studio One. His first film role, uncredited, was in the 1951 film You're in the Navy Now, a film that also featured the screen debuts of Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson. Warden appeared in his first credited film role in 1951 in The Man with My Face. From 1952 to 1955, he appeared in the television series Mister Peepers with Wally Cox. In 1953, he was cast as a sympathetic corporal in From Here to Eternity. Warden's breakthrough film role was Juror No. 7, a salesman who wants a quick decision in a murder case, in 12 Angry Men. Warden guest-starred in many television series over the years, such as Marilyn Maxwell's ABC drama series, Bus Stop, and on David Janssen's ABC drama, The Fugitive. He received a supporting actor Emmy Award for his performance as Chicago Bears coach George Halas in the television movie, Brian's Song, and was twice nominated for his starring role in the 1980s comedy/drama series Crazy Like a Fox. Warden was nominated for Academy Awards as Best Supporting Actor for his performances in Shampoo and Heaven Can Wait. He was buried on July 23, 2005, at the West Point Cemetery. The General William C. Westmoreland Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina, is named in his honor. He was born William Childs Westmoreland in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He served as Chief Of Staff of the United States Army from 1968 to 1972.William Childs Westmoreland adopted a strategy of attrition against the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army, attempting to drain them of manpower and supplies. By the time he was re-assigned as Army Chief Of Staff, U.S. military forces in Vietnam had reached a peak of 535,000. Westmoreland's strategy was ultimately politically unsuccessful. Growing U.S. casualties and the draft undermined U.S. support for the war while large-scale casualties among non-combatants weakened South Vietnamese support. This also failed to weaken North Vietnam's will to fight, and the Government of South Vietnam - a factor largely out of Westmoreland's control - never succeeded in establishing enough legitimacy to quell defections to the Viet Cong. In 1996, the National Society of the Sons Of The American Revolution (SAR) authorized the General William C. Westmoreland award. The award is given each year in recognition to an outstanding SAR veterans volunteer. July 18, 1900: #BOTD: Machine Gun Kelly, American prohibition-ear gangster from Memphis, Tennessee (d. July 17, 1954) is #born George Kelly Barnes in Cleveland, Ohio; his nickname came from his favorite weapon, a Thompson submachine gun. His most infamous crime was the kidnapping of oil tycoon and businessman Charles F. Urschel and his friend Walter R. Jarrett in July 1933 for which he, and his gang, collected a 200K USD ransom. Their victim had collected and left considerable evidence that assisted the subsequent FBI investigation that eventually led to Kelly's arrest in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 26, 1933. The Kellys held Urschel at the farm of Kathryn's mother and step-father. Urschel, having been blindfolded, made note of evidence of his experience including remembering background sounds, counting footsteps and leaving fingerprints on surfaces in reach. This proved invaluable for the FBI in its investigation, as agents concluded that Urschel had been held in Paradise, Texas, based on sounds that Urschel remembered hearing while he was being held hostage. An investigation conducted at Memphis disclosed that the Kellys were living at the residence of J. C. Tichenor. Special agents from Birmingham, Alabama, were immediately dispatched to Memphis, where, in the early morning hours of September 26, 1933, a raid was conducted. George and Kathryn Kelly were taken into custody by FBI agents and Memphis police. Caught without a weapon, Kelly surrenders to the FBI as he repeatedly shouted out "Don't shoot, G-Men!". G-Man (short for "Government Man"), an American slang term which had applied to all federal investigators and special agents of the United States Government, thereby became synonymous with Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents. July 18, 1966: #DOTD: #RIP: Bobby Fuller, American singer-songwriter and guitarist best known for "I Fought the Law" "Love's Made a Fool of You" and "Let Her Dance", recorded with his mid-1960s group The Bobby Fuller Four (b. October 22, 1942) #dies under suspicious circumstances at the age of 24 in an automobile parked outside his Hollywood apartment. The Los Angeles deputy medical examiner, Jerry Nelson, found no bruises, broken bones, cuts or evidence of beating. Ruled either an accident or suicide, some believe Fuller was murdered. Erik Greene, a relative of Sam Cooke, has cited similarities in the deaths of Cooke and Fuller. Fuller bandmate Jim Reese suspected that Charles Manson played a role in Fuller's death. There has been speculation that the Los Angeles Police Department may have been involved because of Fuller's connection to a Mafia-related woman. Fuller was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. Fuller was born in Baytown, Texas, and moved as a small child to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he remained until 1956, when he and his family moved to El Paso, Texas. His It was the same year that Elvis Presley became popular, and Bobby Fuller became mesmerized by the new rock and roll star. Fuller soon adopted the style of fellow Texan Buddy Holly, fronting a four-man combo and often using original material. During the early 1960s, he played in clubs and bars in El Paso, and he recorded on independent record labels in Texas with a constantly changing line-up. The only constant band members were Fuller and his younger brother, Randy Fuller (born on January 29, 1944, in Hobbs, New Mexico) on bass. Most of these independent releases (except two songs recorded at the studio of Norman Petty in Clovis), and an excursion to Yucca Records, also in New Mexico, were recorded in the Fullers' own home studio, with Fuller acting as the producer. He even built a primitive echo chamber in the back yard. The quality of the recordings, using a couple of microphones and a mixing board purchased from a local radio station, was so impressive that he offered the use of his "studio" to local acts for free so he could hone his production skills. Fuller moved to Los Angeles in 1964 with his band The Bobby Fuller Four, and was signed to Mustang Records by producer Bob Keane, who was noted for discovering Ritchie Valens and producing many surf music groups. By this time, the group consisted of Fuller and his brother Randy on vocals/guitar and bass respectively, Jim Reese on guitar and DeWayne Quirico on drums; this was the lineup that recorded "I Fought The Law". (There are actually two versions of "I Fought The Law" by Fuller: the original hit was released as a 45-rpm single, and the re-recording was issued on an album. The arrangements are identical but the vocals by Fuller are slightly different.) At a time when the British Invasion and folk rock were the dominant genres in rock, Fuller stuck to Buddy Holly's style of classic rock and roll with Tex Mex flourishes. His recordings, both covers and originals, also reveal the influences of Eddie Cochran, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and The Everly Brothers, as well as surf guitar. Less well known was Fuller's ability to emulate the reverb-laden surf guitar of Dick Dale and The Ventures. His first Top 40 hit was the self-penned "Let Her Dance". His second hit, "I Fought the Law", peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 12-19, 1966. July 18, 1938: #BOTD: #HBD! Ian Stewart, Scottish keyboard player and manager, co-founder of The Rolling Stones (d. December 12, 1985) is #born at his mother's family farm, Kirklatch, at Pittenweem, in the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. He was removed from the Rolling Stones line-up in May 1963 at the request of manager Andrew Loog Oldham who felt he did not fit the band's image. He nevertheless remained as their road manager and pianist and continued to exert and guiding musical and managerial influence over the band. Ian Stewart died of a massive heart attack in the waiting room of a London, England clinic while waiting to have an examination for respiratory problems he was having, aged 47. His remains were cremated, and the final disposition of his ashes are not publicly disclosed..The Rolling Stones played a tribute gig with Rocket 88 in February 1986 at London's 100 Club, and included a 30-second clip of Stewart playing the blues standard "Key To The Highway" at the end of their recently completed album, Dirty Work. In his 2010 autobiography Life, Keith Richards says: "Ian Stewart. I'm still working for him. To me The Rolling Stones is his band. Without his knowledge and organisation... we'd be nowhere." When the Stones were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989, they requested that Stewart's name be included. On April 19, 2011, pianist Ben Waters released an Ian Stewart tribute album, entitled Boogie 4 Stu, echoing the title title of the Led Zeppelin song "Boggie With Stu" which was a jam session they had with Ian, based around the Ritchie Valens song "Ooh My Head". July 18, 1908: #BOTD: #HBD! Lupe Velez, Mexican-American actress, dancer, singer and beauty during the "Golden Age" of Hollywood films (d. December 14, 1944) is #born Maria Guadalupe Villalobos Velez. Velez began her career as a performer in Mexican vaudeville in the early 1920s. After moving to the United States, she made her first film appearance in a short in 1927. By the end of the decade, she was acting in full-length silent films and had progressed to leading roles in The Gaucho (1927), Lady of the Pavements (1928) and Wolf Song (1929), among others. Velez then made the transition to sound films without difficulty. She was one of the first successful Latin-American actresses in Hollywood. During the 1930s, her well-known explosive screen persona was exploited in a series of successful films like Hot Pepper (1933), Strictly Dynamite (1934) and Hollywood Party (1934). In the 1940s, Velez's popularity peaked after appearing in the Mexican Spitfire films, a series created to capitalize on Velez's well-documented fiery personality. Also nicknamed the Mexican Spitfire by the media, Velez's personal life was as colorful as her screen persona. She had several highly publicized romances with Hollywood actors and a stormy marriage with Johnny Weissmuller. In December 1944, Velez died of an intentional overdose of barbiturates, having consumed 75 Seconal pills and a glass of brandy. She is buried at The Panteon Civil De Dolores in Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico. On the evening of December 13, 1944, Velez dined with her two friends, the silent film star Estelle Taylor and Venita Oakie. In the early morning hours of December 14, Velez retired to her bedroom. Her secretary, Beulah Kinder, found the actress's body on her bed later that morning. A suicide note addressed to Harald Ramond, stage name for Austrian actor Harald Maresch, was found nearby. It read: "To Harald, May God forgive you and forgive me too, but I prefer to take my life away and our baby's before I bring him with shame or killing him. - Lupe." On the back of the note, Velez wrote: "How could you, Harald, fake such a great love for me and our baby when all the time, you didn't want us? I see no other way out for me, so goodbye, and good luck to you, Love Lupe." The day after Velez's death, Harald Ramond told the press that he was "so confused" by Velez's suicide, and claimed that even though the two had broken up, he had agreed to marry Velez. He admitted that he once asked Velez to sign an agreement stating that he was only marrying her to "give the baby a name", but claimed he only did so because he and Velez had had a fight, and he was in a "terrible temper". Actress Estelle Taylor, who was with Velez from 9:00 the previous night until 3:30 the morning Velez died, told the press that Velez had told her of her pregnancy, but said she would rather kill herself than have an abortion (Velez was a devout Roman Catholic). Beulah Kinder, Velez's secretary, later told investigators that after Velez broke off the relationship with Ramond, she planned to go to Mexico to have her baby. Kinder said Velez soon changed her mind after concluding that Ramond "faked" the relationship and considered having an abortion. The day after Velez's death, the Los Angeles County coroner requested that an inquest be opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. On December 16, the coroner dropped the request, after determining that Velez had written the notes, and that she had intended to kill herself. On December 22, a funeral for Velez was held at the mortuary at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles. Among the pallbearers were Velez's ex-husband, Johnny Weissmuller, and actor Gilbert Roland. After the service, Velez's body was sent by train to Mexico City, where a second service was held on December 27. Her body was then interred at Panteon Civil de Dolores Cemetery. Despite the coroner's ruling that Velez committed suicide to avoid the shame of bearing an illegitimate child, some authors have theorized that this was not entirely true. In the book From Bananas to Buttocks: The Latina Body in Popular Film and Culture, Rosa-Linda Fregoso wrote that Velez was known for her defiance of contemporary moral convention, and that it seems unlikely that she could not have reconciled having a child out of wedlock. Fregoso believes that in the final year of her life, Velez exhibited signs of extreme mania and depression. Fregoso goes on to speculate that Velez's death may have been the result of an untreated mental illness such as bipolar disorder. Robert Slatzer (who later claimed to have been secretly married to Marilyn Monroe) claimed that a few weeks before Velez's death, he interviewed her at her home and she confided in him that she was pregnant with Gary Cooper's child (by that time, Cooper was married to socialite Veronica "Rocky" Balfe). According to Slatzer, Velez said that Cooper refused to acknowledge the child, believing that Harald Ramond was the father. After Velez died, Slatzer said he asked Cooper about the situation and Cooper confirmed that it was possible he might have been the father. Slatzer further claimed that he also interviewed Clara Bow (who had also dated Cooper in the 1920s), who revealed that shortly before Velez's death, Cooper called her and screamed that he was going to kill Harald Ramond for impregnating Velez. Slazter claimed that Bow told him that she never believed Velez's baby was fathered by Ramond, and that she was convinced that Velez had attempted to get Ramond to marry her to protect Cooper's reputation. Biographer Michelle Vogel speculated that if Cooper was the father, his rejection of Velez and their child coupled with the idea of having to raise a child alone may have sent Velez "over the edge". In the 2002 book Tarzan, My Father Johnny Weissmuller Jr recounted the events surrounding Velez's death as a mystery caused by an attempt to "put a lid" on what happened. It states her housekeeper discovered her body and called Bo Roos, Velez's business manager, who called his friend and Beverly Hills Police Chief Anderson to the scene. The book states after Velez arranged to meet Ramond, decorated her room and dressed in a negligee, her ingestion of seconal was either to calm her nerves to meet him or a failed dramatic gesture to scare him. The book also suggested the baby was fathered possibly by Cooper not Ramond. Velez's death was recounted in the 1959 book Hollywood Babylon by Kenneth Anger and has become urban legend. In his telling, Velez planned to stage a beautiful suicide scene atop her satin bed, but the Seconal did not mix well with the "Mexi-Spice Last Supper" she had eaten earlier that evening. As a result, she became violently ill, stumbled to the bathroom to vomit, slipped on the bathroom floor tile and fell head first into the toilet, where she subsequently drowned. Anger claimed that Velez's "chambermaid" Juanita found her the next morning. Despite the fact that his version of events contradicts published reports and the official ruling, his story is often repeated as fact or for comedic effect - it was recounted in the pilot episode of the television comedy series Frasier, and also referenced in an episode of the cartoon The Simpsons. Velez's biographer, Michelle Vogel, points out that it would have been "virtually impossible" for Velez to have "stumbled to the bathroom" or even get off her bed after having consumed such a large amount of seconal. Seconal, a barbiturate, is noted for being fast acting even in small doses and Velez's death was likely instantaneous. Harriet Nelson (formerly Harriet Hilliard), American singer and actress, best known for her role on the radio and television sitcoms The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet (d. October 2, 1994) is #born Peggy Lou Snyder in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Hazel Dell nee McNutt (1888-1971) and Roy Hilliard Snyder (1879-1953). She appeared on the vaudeville stage when she was three years old and made her debut on Broadway in her teens. She frequented the Cotton Club, and began smoking at age thirteen. She wed the comedian, Roy Sedley (1901-1989), in 1930. They were briefly married, but Roy was abusive and lived what has been described as "a high-flying life". They separated a year later, and the marriage was annulled in 1933. She left high school before graduating and joined the Corps de Ballet at the Capitol Theater, later dancing in the Harry Carroll Revue and working as a straight woman for comedians Ken Murray and Bert Lahr. By 1932, she was still performing in vaudeville when she met the saxophone-playing bandleader Ozzie Nelson. Nelson hired her to sing with the band, under the name Harriet Hilliard. They married three years later. They had two sons, David (born in 1936) and Eric (known as Ricky, born in 1940). Hilliard had a respectable film career as a solo performer, apart from the band. RKO Radio Pictures signed her to a one-year contract in 1936, and she appeared in three feature films, the most famous being the Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers musical Follow The Fleet. She was very much in demand during the World War II years for leading roles in escapist musicals, comedies, and mysteries. In Ozzie Nelson's book, he wrote that Harriet was quite popular during her short time at RKO, and that he and she wanted her to continue her solo film career. However, they decided it was more important for her to continue with the band and subsequent radio show. Although the couple occasionally appeared together in movies, either as a duo (in Honeymoon Lodge) or as separate characters (in Hi, Good Lookin'!), they are best known for their broadcasting efforts. In 1944, the Nelsons began a domestic-comedy series for radio, The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet. It was highly popular and made a successful transition to television. It was one of the stalwarts of the ABC-TV schedule from 1952 to 1966. The Nelsons' two sons, Ricky and David, were featured continuously on the show. Peter Jones, director of the television documentary Ozzie and Harriet: The Adventures of America's Favorite Family, has described Harriet Nelson: "She was a bombshell. She liked gay people. She liked a good off-color joke. She enjoyed her cocktails at night. She had the talent to go on and be a big star, but she made that decision to be Ozzie's wife." In 1973, Ozzie and Harriet also appeared in the sitcom Ozzie's Girls. The couple remained married until Ozzie's death from liver cancer in 1975. Her grandchildren include actress Tracy Nelson and musicians Matthew and Gunnar Nelson. She was also the mother-in-law of Rick's wife Kristin Harmon and David's wife June Blair. In 1978, Harriet Nelson moved full-time to the Laguna Beach, California, beach home the family had built in 1954, where she died of congestive heart failure, aged 85. She is interred with her husband and younger son Ricky (who died in a plane crash in 1985) in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles. July 18, 2001: #DOTD: #RIP: Mimi Farina, American singer, songwriter, activist, guitarist and beauty, performer of folk music, folk rock and bluegrass (b. April 30, 1945) #dies of neuroendocrine cancer at her home in California at age 56. A memorial service was held on August 7 at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Eulogies from Joan Baez, Paul Liberatore and Lana Severn were heard by the 1,200 people who attended. The life of Mimi Farina partially is chronicled in David Hajdu's book "Positively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina and Richard Farina". July 17, 1952: #BOTD: #HBD! Nicolette Larson, American singer and beauty, best known for her work in the late 1970s with Neil Young and her 1978 hit single of Young's "Lotta Love", which hit No. 1 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart and No. 8 on the pop singles chart (d. December 16, 1997) is #born in Helena, Montana. Her cover of "Lotta Love" was followed by four more adult contemporary hits, two of which were also minor pop hits. By 1985, she shifted her focus to country music, charting six times on the US country singles chart. Her only top-40 country hit was "That's How You Know When Love's Right", a duet with Steve Wariner. She died in Los Angeles, California, as a result of complications arising from cerebral edema triggered by liver failure, aged 45 years. According to her friend Astrid Young, Neil Young's half-sister, Larson had been showing symptoms of depression, and her fatal seizure "was in no small way related to her chronic use of Valium and Tylenol PM." Larson was buried at Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Two benefit concerts were held in Larson's honor in February 1998. Tribute concerts were held on the 10th anniversary of her death in December 2007 and also the following year. July 18, 1988: #DOTD: #RIP: Nico, German singer, songwriter, model, keyboard player, actress and beauty (b. October 16, 1938) #dies during a holiday with her son Ari on the Spanish island of Ibiza when she hit her head after flling off her bicycle. A passing taxi driver found her unconscious, but had difficulty getting her admitted to local hospitals. She was misdiagnosed as suffering from heat exposure and was declared dead at 20:00 hrs. X-rays later revealed a severe cerebral hemorrhage as the cause of death. Her son later said "In the late morning of July 17, 1988, my mother told me she needed to go downtown to buy marijuana. She sat down in front of the mirror and wrapped a black scarf around her head. My mother stared at the mirror and took great care to wrap the scarf appropriately. Down the hill on her bike: "I'll be back soon." She left in the early afternoon on the hottest day of the year." Nico's cremated remains are buried in her mother's plot in Grunewald, a forest cemetery in Berlin. Friends played a tape of "Mutterlein", a song from her 1970 solo album Desertshore, at her funeral. Nico was born Christa Paffgen in Cologne, German. She had roles in several films, including Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls (1966). At the insistence of Warhol, she sang on three songs of the Velvet Underground's debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967). At the same time, she started a solo career and released Chelsea Girl. Nico's friend Jim Morrison suggested that she start writing her own material. She then composed songs on a harmonium, not traditionally a rock instrument; John Cale became her musical arranger and produced The Marble Index, Desertshore, The End... and other subsequent albums. In the 1980s, she toured extensively in Europe, United States, Australia and Japan. After a concert in Berlin in June 1988, she went on holiday in Ibiza to rest and died as the result of a cycling accident.
