Cherries have been a staple for centuries. From the Roman Empire to the Chinese dynasties, the little red fruits have been on the plate of millions and came to America by ship with early settlers in the 1600s. Modern-day cherry production in the United States began in 1852 when Peter Dougherty began planting cherry trees on the Old Mission Peninsula in the state of Michigan. The Midwest area proved to have an ideal climate for growing cherries and mass harvesting soon took place, with the first commercial tart cherry orchards in Michigan being planted in 1893. Soon, production surpassed other major crops and the first cherry processing facility, Traverse City Canning Company, was built with the ruby-red fruit soon being shipped to neighboring cities in the Midwest. Outreach to the entire country was created shortly after. The maraschino cherry, created from sweet cherries, is what popularized cherries in the U.S. This popular dessert cherry was invented by merchants on the Balkan Peninsula and in northern Italy by adding liqueur to a local cherry called the Marasca. However, even before researchers learned about the numerous snake species, the reptile was mentioned in ancient mythologies and was also an integral part of various religions. According to Irish mythology, in the 5th century, St. Patrick went to a hill top where he fasted for 40 days. During this time, he was attacked by snakes. In another legend, the Chinese believe there once was a white female snake demon who resided underwater. However, the designation by the President was only for July 16, 1983, not each succeeding year. Trinity was the code name of this test, whcih was conducted by the United States Army as part of the Manhattan Project. Concerns about whether the complex Fat Man design would work led to a decision to conduct this first nuclear test in the Jornada del Muerto desert about 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, on what was then the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range, now part of White Sands Missile Range. The only structures originally in the vicinity were the McDonald Ranch House and its ancillary buildings, which scientists used as a laboratory for testing bomb components. A base camp was constructed, and there were 425 people present on the weekend of the test. The code name "Trinity" was assigned by J. Robert Oppenheimer, the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, inspired by the poetry of John Donne. (In 1962, Manhattan Project leader Gen. Leslie Groves wrote to Oppenheimer to ask about the origins of the name Trinity. Oppenheimer said, "Why I chose the name is not clear, but I know what thoughts were in my mind. There is a poem of John Donne, written just before his death, which I know and love." Oppenheimer then quoted the sonnet "Hymn to God, My God, in My Sickness" about a man unafraid to die because he believed in resurrection. Oppenheimer continued, "That still does not make a Trinity, but in another, better known devotional poem Donne opens, 'Batter my heart, three person'd God.' Beyond this, I have no clues whatever.") This test was of the implosion-design plutonium device nicknamed the "Gadget" was of the same design as the "Fat Man" bomb later detonated over Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945. The complexity of the design required a major effort from the Los Alamos Laboratory, and concerns about whether it would work led to a decision to conduct the first nuclear test. The test was planned and directed by Kenneth Bainbridge. Fears of a fizzle did lead to the construction of a steel containment vessel called Jumbo that could contain the plutonium, allowing it to be recovered, although ultimately this was not used in the test. A rehearsal was held on May 7, 1945, in which 108 short tons (98 t) of high explosive spiked with radioactive isotopes were detonated. The Gadget's detonation released the explosive energy of about 25 kilotons of TNT (100 TJ). Observers included Vannevar Bush, James Chadwick, James Conant, Thomas Farrell, Enrico Fermi, Hans Bethe, Richard Feynman, Leslie Groves, Robert Oppenheimer, Frank Oppenheimer, Geoffrey Taylor, Richard Tolman, Edward Teller, and John von Neumann. The fifth crewed flight in the United States Apollo Program, Apollo 11 Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours after landing on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC; Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. They spent about two and a quarter hours together outside the spacecraft, and collected 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of lunar material to bring back to Earth. July 16, 1994: Space: Outer Space: Astronomy: The Solar System: Small Solar System Bodies (SSSBs): Comets: Destroyed Comets: Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (D/1993 F2): -- The first fragment of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9's nucleus, fragment A, is destroyed in a head-on collision into Jupiter's southern hemisphere at 20:13 UTC at about 60 km/s (35 mi/s). Instruments on the American robotic space probe Galileo, which was on its way to Jupiter to study the planet and its moons, detected a fireball that reached a peak temperature of about 24,000 K (23,700 dg C; 42,700 dg F), compared to the typical Jovian cloud-top temperature of about 130 K (-143 dg C; -226 dg F). It then expanded and cooled rapidly to about 1,500 K (1,230 dg C; 2,240 dg F). The plume from the fireball quickly reached a height of over 3,000 km (1,900 mi) and was observed by the low Earth orbit Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Over the next six days, 21 distinct impacts were observed, with the largest coming on July 18 at 07:33 UTC when fragment G struck Jupiter. This impact created a giant dark spot over 12,000 km or 7,500 mi (almost one Earth diameter) across, and was estimated to have released an energy equivalent to 6,000,000 megatons of TNT (600 times the world's nuclear arsenal). Two impacts 12 hours apart on July 19 created impact marks of similar size to that caused by fragment G, and impacts continued until July 22, when fragment W struck the planet. Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (formally designated D/1993 F2) was a comet that broke apart in July 1992 and collided with Jupiter between July 16 and 22, 1994, providing the first direct observation of an extraterrestrial collision of Solar System objects. This generated a large amount of coverage in the popular media, and the comet was closely observed by astronomers worldwide. The collision provided new information about Jupiter and highlighted its possible role in reducing space debris in the inner Solar System. The comet was discovered by astronomers Carolyn and Eugene M. Shoemaker and David Levy in 1993. Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9) had been captured by Jupiter and was orbiting the planet at the time. It was located on the night of March 24 in a photograph taken with the 46 cm (18 in) Schmidt telescope at the Palomar Observatory in California. It was the first active comet observed to be orbiting a planet, and had probably been captured by Jupiter around 20-30 years earlier. Calculations showed that its unusual fragmented form was due to a previous closer approach to Jupiter in July 1992. At that time, the orbit of Shoemaker-Levy 9 passed within Jupiter's Roche limit, and Jupiter's tidal forces had acted to pull apart the comet. The comet was later observed as a series of fragments ranging up to 2 km (1.2 mi) in diameter. These fragments collided with Jupiter's southern hemisphere at a speed of approximately 60 km/s (37 mi/s) (Jupiter's escape velocity) or 216,000 km/h (134,000 mph). The prominent scars from the impacts were more easily visible than the Great Red Spot and persisted for many months. On April 30, 2008, two skeletal remains found near Yekaterinburg, Russia are confirmed by Russian scientists to be the remains of Alexei and Anastasia, two of the children of the last Tsar of Russia, whose entire family was executed at Yekaterinburg by the Bolsheviks. The Russian Imperial Romanov family (Tsar Nicholas II, his wife Tsarina Alexandra and their five children Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei) and all those who chose to accompany them into imprisonment - notably Eugene Botkin, Anna Demidova, Alexei Trupp and Ivan Kharitonov - were shot, bayoneted and clubbed to death in Yekaterinburg on the night of 16-17 July 1918. The Tsar and his family were killed by Bolshevik troops led by Yakov Yurovsky under the orders of the Ural Regional Soviet and according to instructions by Lenin, Yakov Sverdlov and Felix Dzerzhinsky. Their bodies were then stripped, mutilated, burned and disposed of in a field called Porosenkov Log in the Koptyaki forest. Following the February Revolution, the Romanov family and their loyal servants were imprisoned in the Alexander Palace before being moved to Tobolsk and then Ekaterinburg, where they were killed, allegedly at the express command of Vladimir Lenin. Despite being informed that "the entire family suffered the same fate as its head", the Bolsheviks only announced Nicholas's death, with the official press release that "Nicholas Romanov's wife and son have been sent to a secure place." For over eight years, the Soviet leadership maintained a systematic web of disinformation as to the fate of the family, from claiming in September 1919 that they were murdered by left-wing revolutionaries to denying outright in April 1922 that they were dead. They acknowledged the murders in 1926 following the publication of an investigation by a White Emigre (a Russian subject who emigrated from Imperial Russia in the wake of the Russian Revolution and Russian Civil War, and who was in opposition to the Bolsheviks who took control of the country after the revolution), but maintained that the bodies were destroyed and that Lenin's Cabinet was not responsible. The emergence of Romanov impostors drew media attention away from Soviet Russia, and discussion regarding the fate of the family was suppressed by Joseph Stalin from 1938. The burial site was discovered in 1979 by amateur sleuth Alexander Avdonin, but the existence of the remains was not made public until 1989, during the glasnost period. The identity of the remains was confirmed by forensic and DNA investigation. They were reburied in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg in 1998, 80 years after they were killed, in a funeral that was not attended by key members of the Russian Orthodox Church, who disputed the authenticity of the remains. In 2008, after considerable and protracted legal wrangling, the Russian Prosecutor General's office rehabilitated the Romanov family as "victims of political repressions". Yielding to political pressure, Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell led his unseasoned Union Army across Bull Run against the equally inexperienced Confederate Army of Brig. Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard camped near Manassas Junction. McDowell's ambitious plan for a surprise flank attack on the Confederate left was poorly executed by his officers and men; nevertheless, the Confederates, who had been planning to attack the Union left flank, found themselves at an initial disadvantage. Confederate reinforcements under Brig. Gen. Joseph E. Johnston arrived from the Shenandoah Valley by railroad, and the course of the battle quickly changed. A brigade of Virginians under the relatively unknown brigadier general from the Virginia Military Institute, Thomas J. Jackson, stood its ground, which resulted in Jackson receiving his famous nickname, "Stonewall". The Confederates launched a strong counterattack, and as the Union troops began withdrawing under fire, many panicked and the retreat turned into a rout. McDowell's men frantically ran without order in the direction of Washington, D.C. Both armies were sobered by the fierce fighting and many casualties, and realized that the war was going to be much longer and bloodier than either had anticipated. The Battle of First Bull Run highlighted many of the problems and deficiencies that were typical of the first year of the war. Units were committed piecemeal, attacks were frontal, infantry failed to protect exposed artillery, tactical intelligence was nil, and neither commander was able to employ his whole force effectively. July 16, 1863: The American Civil War (The Civil War, The War Between The States): Conscription: Conscription In The United States: The Enrollment Act Of 1863 (The Civil War Military Draft Act): The New York City Draft Riots (July 13-16, 1863) (The Manhattan Draft Riots, Draft Week): -- The largest civil urban disturbance in American history, the largest race riot in American history as well, ends on a Thursday after having raged for four days since begining on a Monday morning July 13, 1863 in Lower Manhattan, a public rebellion widely regarded as the culmination of white working-class discontent generally, and Irish American discontent particularly, with new laws passed by Congress that year to draft men to fight in the ongoing American Civil War. Initially intended to express anger at the draft, the protests turned into a race riot, with white rioters attacking black people in violence throughout the city. The riot was tantamount to a civil war within the city's Irish community, in which predominately Irish American rioters confronted police, soldiers, and pro-war politicians who were also largely from the local Irish immigrant community. The rioters did not want to fight in a Civil War where wealthier men, who could afford to pay a 300 USD commutation fee to hire a substitute, were spared from the draft; at the time a typical laborer's wage was between 1-2 USD a day, while the commutation fee was the equivalent of 7.1K USD in 2022. Urban oiir outrage against this policy erupted that summer, not only in New York City, but in other major northern cities, such as Newark and Jersey City, New Jersey; Toledo, Ohio; Evansville, Illinois; and Boston, Massachusetts. Earlier that month, Provost Marshal for New York Captain Joel B. Erhardt, ordered some able-bodied men who were erecting a building to report for the draft. They responded by attacking him with crow bars and forced him to flee. Though registration and drafting had begun peaceably earlier in the month at the Provost Marshal's Office, on this date thousands of workers decided not report for work. Instead, mobs armed with clubs, knives and other weapons converged on draft headquarters, where they were joined by thousands of men and women who left work. Telegraph poles were knocked down to disrupt communications; the police were swept aside, and the draft headquarters building was set on fire. The mob then went wild, resulting in lynchings, 3,000 Blacks homeless, between 1,500 and 2,000 civilians dead (many of them Black) and at least 8000 wounded or maimed for life by a mob of at least 50,000; despite these statistics, the official death toll was listed at 119-120 people. With the police overwhelmed, and the mayor's house under guard, President Abraham Lincoln diverted several regiments of militia and volunteer troops used in the Battle of Gettysburg to New York city to restore order, with Colonel Fry bringing in 100,000 regular troops, including the entire 8th Indiana Infantry Regiment. They did not reach the city until the second day of rioting, by which time the mobs had ransacked or destroyed numerous public buildings, two Protestant churches, the homes of various abolitionists or sympathizers, many black homes, and the Colored Orphan Asylum at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue, which was burned to the ground. One mob assaulted a platoon of soldiers and forced them to take cover in a foundry; reinforcements rescued them by routing the mob with fixed bayonets. The mobs began smashing and looting stores. They were pursued by soldiers who fall victim to musket fire from the rooftops. Howitzer artillery pieces were rushed in and fired on the mob. Eleven of the ringleaders of the riots were killed. Troops battled in hand-to-hand combat in stairwells and on rooftops. Conditions in the city were such that Major General John E. Wool, commander of the Department of the East, said on July 16 that "Martial law ought to be proclaimed, but I have not a sufficient force to enforce it." Following the riot, not one Black worker showed up for work on New York's docks. Of the hundreds arrested, only 19 were convicted for their roles in the riot. The area's demographics changed as a result of the riot. One out of every five Black New Yorkers moved away after the riot. July 16, 1935: The History Of The Automobile: Street Furniture: The Parking Meter: -- The world's first parking meter, "The Black Maria", designed by Oklahoma State University engineering professors Holger George Thuesen and Gerald A. Hale, is installed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Parking meters are used to collect money in exchange for the right to park a vehicle in a particular place for a limited amount of time. They are used by municipalities as a tool for enforcing their integrated on-street parking policy, usually related to their traffic and mobility management policies, but are also used for revenue. They are a form of Street Furniture, a collective term for objects and pieces of equipment installed along streets and roads for various purposes, which includes benches, traffic barriers, bollards, post boxes, phone boxes, streetlamps, traffic lights, traffic signs, parking meters, bus stops, tram stops, taxi stands, public lavatories, fountains, watering troughs, memorials, public sculptures, and waste receptacles. An early patent for a parking meter was filed by Roger W. Babson, on August 30, 1928. The meter was intended to operate on power from the battery of the parking vehicle and required a connection from the car to the meter. Thuesen and Hale's design was the first working parking meter, which they began working on at the request of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma lawyer and newspaper publisher Carl C. Magee. Magee received a patent for the apparatus on May 24, 1938. Industrial production started in 1936 and expanded until the mid-1980s. The first models were based on a coin acceptor, a dial to engage the mechanism, and a visible pointer and flag to indicate the expiration of the paid period. This configuration lasted more than 40 years, with only a few changes in the exterior design, such as a double-headed design (to cover two adjacent parking spaces) and the incorporation of new materials and production techniques. M.H. Rhodes Inc. of Hartford, Connecticut started making meters for Mark-Time Parking Meter Company of Miami, where the first Rhodes meters were installed in 1936. These were different from the Magee design because only the driver's action of turning a handle was necessary to keep the spring wound. At the same time, Magee's meters needed a serviceman to wind the spring occasionally. Upon insertion of coins into a currency detector slot or swiping a credit card or smartcard into a slot, and turning a handle (or pressing a key), a timer is initiated within the meter. Some locations now allow payment by mobile phone (to remotely record payments for subsequent checking and enforcement). A dial or display on the meter indicates the time remaining. In many cities, all parking meters are designed to use only one type of coin. Use of other coins will fail to register, and the meter may cease to function altogether. For example, in Hackensack, New Jersey, all parking meters are designed for quarters only. In 1960, New York City hired its first crew of "meter maids"; all were women. It was not until 1967 that the first man was hired. In the mid-1980s, a digital version was introduced, replacing the mechanical parts with electronic components: boards, keyboards, and displays. This allowed the meter more flexibility, as an EEPROM chip can be reconfigured more easily than corresponding mechanical components. By the beginning of the 1990s, millions of parking meter units had been sold worldwide. Still, the market was already looking into new solutions, like the collective pay and display machines and new forms of payment that appeared along with electronic money and communication technologies. More modern parking meters are generically called multi-space meters (as opposed to single-space meters) and control multiple spaces per block (typically 8-12) or lots (unlimited). While with these meters, the parker may have to walk several car lengths to the meter, there are significant customer service, performance, and efficiency benefits. Multispace meters incorporate more customer-friendly features such as on-screen instructions and acceptance of credit cards for payment-no longer do drivers have to have pockets full of coins. While they may still be prone to coin jams and other types of vandalism, most of these meters are wireless and can report problems immediately to maintenance staff, who can then fix the meters so they are not out of service for very long. With pay-by-space meters, the driver parks in a space, goes to the meter, enters the space number, and makes payment. The meter memorizes the time remaining, and enforcement personnel press the bay buttons to check for violations. Other advances in parking meters include vehicle detection technology, which allows the pay-by-space meters to know when a car is parked in a space. This opens the door for benefits for parking managers, including providing way-finding (directing drivers to unoccupied spaces via the web or street signs), enabling remote violation detection, and gathering vital statistics about parking supply and demand. Some meters allow payment for additional time by phone and notify drivers when they are about to expire. Parking meters in Santa Monica use vehicle detectors to prevent drivers from "feeding the meter" indefinitely, and to delete remaining time when a car departs so the next car cannot take any time without paying. Meters in Madrid give discounted and free parking to drivers of hybrid and electric vehicles, respectively. Drivers can reserve meters spots in Los Angeles by cellphone. Another advancement with parking meters is the new solar-powered meters that accept credit cards and still coins. Amundsen began his career as a polar explorer as first mate on Adrien de Gerlache's Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897-1899. From 1903 to 1906, he led the first expedition to successfully traverse the Northwest Passage on the sloop Gjoa. In 1909, Amundsen began planning for a South Pole expedition. He left Norway in June 1910 on the ship Fram and reached Antarctica in January 1911. Following the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party's ouster from government in 1963, al-Bakr and the party pursued underground activities and became vocal critics of the government. It was during this period that al-Bakr was elected the Ba'ath Party's Iraqi branch's Secretary General (the head), and appointed his cousin, Saddam Hussein, to be the party cell's deputy leader. Al-Bakr and the Ba'ath Party regained power in the coup of 1968, later referred to as the 17 July Revolution. In the coup's aftermath, al-Bakr was elected Chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council and President; he was later appointed Prime Minister. Saddam, the Ba'ath Party's deputy, became Deputy Chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council and Vice President, and was responsible for Iraq's security services. During his rule, Iraq was blossoming; high economic growth due to high international oil prices strengthened Iraq's role in the Arab world and increased the people's standard of living. Land reforms were introduced, and wealth was distributed more equally. A sort of socialist economy was established in the late-1970s, under the direction of Saddam. Al-Bakr gradually lost power to Saddam in the 1970s, when the latter strengthened his position within the party and the state through security services. In 1976, Saddam (who had never served in the armed forces) took the title of general in the Ba'th party's Popular Army and rapidly became the strongman of the government. As the weak and elderly al-Bakr became unable to execute his duties, Saddam took on an increasingly prominent role as the face of the government both internally and externally, eventually becoming de facto leader of Iraq some years before he formally became president. On July 16, 1979, the 65-year-old Ahmed Hassan Al-Bakr stepped down, ostensibly on health grounds, and Saddam assumed the presidency in a move that was widely regarded as a formality. In contrast to U.S. Army's official history, South Korean local natives claimed that it took place on a mountain above the village of Yongdam-ri, which is next to Duman-ri. Operating at the Kum River during the Battle Of Taejon, troops of the U.S. Army's 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, were cut off from resupply by a roadblock established by North Korean troops of the NK 3rd Division. The roadblock proved difficult to break, and forced U.S. troops to move through nearby mountains to evacuate their wounded. Thirty critically wounded U.S. troops were stranded at the top of a mountain. Attended to by only two non-combatants, a chaplain and a medic, the wounded were discovered by a North Korean patrol. Though the medic was able to escape, the North Koreans executed the unarmed chaplain as he prayed over the wounded, then killed the rest of them. The massacre was one of several incidents that led U.S. commanders to establish a commission in July to look into war crimes during the war. The same month, the North Korean commanders, concerned about the way their soldiers were treating prisoners of war, laid out stricter guidelines for handling enemy captives. July 16, 1965: #DOTD: South Vietnamese Colonel Pham Ngoc Thao, a formerly undetected communist spy and double agent, is hunted down and killed by unknown individuals after being sentenced to death in absentia by a military tribunal under South Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Cao Ky for the February 1965 coup attempt against Nguyen Khanh; it is believed that he was murdered after a bounty was placed on his head. After Vietnam was reunified at the end of the Vietnam War, the victorious communists claimed Thao as one of their own and posthumously made him a one-star general. Colonel Pham Ngoc Thao, also known as Albert Thao (1922-1965), was a communist sleeper agent of the Viet Minh (and, later, of the Vietnam People's Army) who infiltrated the Army of the Republic of Vietnam and also became a major provincial leader in South Vietnam. In 1962, he was made overseer of Ngo Dinh Nhu's Strategic Hamlet Program in South Vietnam and deliberately forced it forward at an unsustainable speed, causing the production of poorly equipped and poorly defended villages and the growth of rural resentment toward the regime of President Ngo Dinh Diem, Nhu's elder brother. In light of the failed "land reform" efforts in North Vietnam, the Hanoi government welcomed Thao's efforts to undermine Diem. During the First Indochina War, Thao was a communist officer in the Vietminh and helped oversee various operations in the Mekong Delta in the far south, at one point commanding his future enemy Nguyen Khanh, who briefly served the communist cause. After the French withdrawal and the partition of Vietnam, Thao stayed in the south and made a show of renouncing communism. He became part of the military establishment in the anti-communist southern regime and quickly rose through the ranks. Nominally Catholic, Thao befriended Diem's elder brother, Archbishop Pierre Martin Ngo Dinh Thuc-the devoutly Roman Catholic Ngo family strongly favored co-religionists and had great trust in Thao, unaware that he was still loyal to the communists. He went on to serve as the chief of Ben Tre Province, and gained fame after the area, traditionally a communist stronghold, suddenly became peaceful and prosperous. Vietnamese and US officials, as well as journalists hostile to or supportive of Saigon, misinterpreted this as a testament to Thao's great ability, and he was promoted to a more powerful position where he could further his sabotage. Thao and the communists in the local area had simply stopped fighting, so that the communists could quietly recuperate, while Thao would appear to be very skillful and be given a more important job where he could do more damage. Through intrigue, Thao also helped destabilise and ultimately unseat two South Vietnamese regimes - Diem's and the military junta of Khanh. As the Diem regime began to unravel in 1963, Thao was one of the officers planning a coup. His plot was ultimately integrated into the successful plot and his activities promoted infighting which weakened the government and distracted the military from fighting the Viet Cong insurgency. Throughout 1964 and 1965, as South Vietnam was struggling to establish a stable state after the ouster of Diem, Thao was involved in several intrigues and coup plots which diverted the government from implementing its programs. In 1965, he went into hiding after a failed attempt to seize power from Khanh and was sentenced to death in absentia. July 16, 1981: #DOTD: #RIP: Harry Chapin, American singer, songwriter, guitarist and philanthropist, achieved worldwide success in the 1970s, became one of history's most popular artists and highest-paid performers, and one of the best charting musical artists in the United States, best known for his folk rock and pop rock songs (b. May 25, 1942) #dies in the afternoon while driving on the Long Island Expressway en route to perform at a free benefit concert at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, New York, that evening. At 12:27 p.m., Chapin had reportedly put on his emergency flashers, decelerated his vehicle's speed to 15 mph, and had weaved from the far-left lane to the center lane, to the left lane, and then back to the center lane before his vehicle was struck from behind by a semi-trailer truck. The force of the collision crushed the rear of the car, ruptured the fuel tank, and dragged the car several hundred feet on the pavement. Chapin was fatally injured in the fiery traffic collision with a semi-trailer truck outside Jericho, New York. Passers-by managed to help the unconscious Chapin out of his engulfed 1975 Volkswagen Rabbit and he was immediately taken by helicopter to the nearby Nassau County Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 1:05 p.m. due to internal bleeding. Chapin's widow won a 12M USD decision in a negligence lawsuit against Supermarkets General (Pathmark), the owners of the truck involved. Chapin is buried in the Huntington Rural Cemetery in Huntington, New York. Judas Priest Trial: -- A civil action trial begins that alleges heavy metal band Judas Priest as responsible for the 1985 suicide attempts of 20-year-old James Vance and 18-year-old Ray Belknap in Reno, Nevada, US. On December 23, 1985, Vance and Belknap became intoxicated before going to a playground at a Lutheran church in Reno. Belknap placed a 12-gauge shotgun under his own chin and proceeded to fire the weapon, dying instantly. Vance followed, but survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound with a severely disfigured face. He died three years later. Vance's parents and their legal team, headed by Nevada attorney Ken McKenna, subsequently alleged these shootings were triggered by a subliminal message of "do it" supposedly included in their version of song "Better By You, Better Than Me", Judas Priest's cover version of the 1969 song by English rock band Spooky Tooth composed by keyboardist Gary Wright, best known for his 1976 hit songs "Dream Weaver" and "Love Is Alive", and for his role in helping establish the synthesizer as a leading instrument in rock and pop music. The three-week trial was watched closely by the music industry and constitutional lawyers. In a pre-trial motion, the judge ruled that subliminal messages were incapable of being protected speech under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, since they were by definition not noticeable and thus could not form part of a dialogue. Timothy Moore, who testified on Judas Priest's behalf, stated that the plaintiffs (led by McKenna) achieved "a major victory in getting the case to trial in the first place". The case was dismissed, with the finding that any subliminal messages within the recording, should they actually exist, were not responsible for the suicides. The lawsuit cost the band approximately 250K USD in legal costs and the judge ordered CBS to pay 40K USD to the plaintiff's attorneys to reimburse them for costs related to bringing the lawsuit, since the label did not comply with discovery orders and provide master tapes of Stained Class, the album on which the song appears. to Vance's lawyers. The most likely cause of her death was cancer. She was buried in Westminster Abbey on August 3, in a tomb on the opposite side of Edward the Confessor's shrine and slightly above eye level for a person of average height. Anne's epitaph reads "ANNE OF CLEVES | QUEEN OF ENGLAND | BORN 1515 _ DIED 1557". She was the last of Henry VIII's wives to die. Born Anna von Kleve, she was Queen Of England from January 6 to July 9, 1540 as the fourth wife of King Henry VIII. Most historians believe that Henry's misgivings about the marriage were blamed on Anne's alleged unsatisfactory appearance and her failure to inspire him to consummate the marriage. He felt that he had been misled after his advisors had praised Anne's beauty: "She is nothing so fair as she hath been reported", he complained. Henry's chief minister Thomas Cromwell received some blame for the Holbein portrait painting of Anne, which Henry believed had not been an accurate representation of her, and for some of the exaggerated reports of her beauty. When the king finally met Anne, he was reportedly shocked by her plain appearance. As the marriage was never consummated, she was not crowned queen consort. Following the annulment, she was given a generous settlement by the King. Anne of Cleves House, in Lewes, East Sussex, is just one of many properties she owned, though she never lived there. She is buried at The Lincoln Tomb, the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, as well as his wife Mary Todd Lincoln and three of their four sons: Edward, William, and Thomas, located in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. Periodic surveys conducted by the Siena College Research Institute since 1982 have consistently found Lincoln to be among the most poorly regarded first ladies in the assessments of historians. Historians see Lincoln as having been a meddling and disruptive presence in her husband's White House, in large part due to her likely mental illness. Mary Todd Lincoln was born Mary Ann Todd in Lexington, Kentucky into a large, wealthy, slave-owning family; she dropped the name Ann after her younger sister, Ann Todd (later Clark), was born. She was well educated, and graduated finishing school during her teens. She moved to Springfield, Illinois, where she lived with her married sister Elizabeth Edwards. Before she married Abraham Lincoln, she was courted by his long-time political opponent Stephen A. Douglas. The Lincolns had four sons of whom only the eldest, Robert, survived both parents. Their family home and neighborhood in Springfield is preserved at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. Mary Lincoln staunchly supported her husband throughout his presidency and was active in keeping national morale high during the Civil War. She acted as the White House social coordinator, throwing lavish balls and redecorating the White House at great expense; her spending was the source of much consternation. She was seated next to Abraham when he was assassinated in the President's Box at Ford's Theatre on Tenth Street in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865. The deaths of her husband and three of her sons weighed heavily on her. Mary Lincoln suffered from numerous physical and mental health issues during her life. She had frequent migraines, which were exacerbated by a head injury in 1863. She was depressed for much of her life; some historians think she may have had bipolar disorder. She was briefly institutionalized for psychiatric disease in 1875, but later retired to the home of her sister. DeMille, Fritz Lang, and Frank Capra, who made 85 films in 38 years before turning to television (d. January 20, 1990) is #born Ruby Catherine Stevens in Brooklyn, New York. At the suggestion of theatrical producer and impresario David Belasco, Ruby changed her name to Barbara Stanwyck by combining the first name of the title character in the play Barbara Frietchie with the last name of the actress in the play, Jane Stanwyck; both were found on a 1906 theater program. Barbara Stanwyck made her debut on stage in the chorus as a Ziegfeld girl in 1923 at age 16, and within a few years was acting in plays. Her first lead role, which was in the hit Burlesque (1927), established her as a Broadway star. Orphaned at the age of four and partially raised in foster homes, she always worked. One of her directors, Jacques Tourneur, said of her, "She only lives for two things, and both of them are work." In 1929, she began acting in talking pictures. Frank Capra chose her for his romantic drama Ladies of Leisure (1930). This led to additional leading roles which raised her profile, such as Night Nurse (1931), Baby Face (1933), and the controversial The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933). In 1937, she played the title role in Stella Dallas, for which she earned her first Academy Award nomination for best actress. In 1939, she starred in Union Pacific. In 1941, she starred in two screwball comedies: Ball of Fire with Gary Cooper, and The Lady Eve with Henry Fonda. She received her second Academy Award nomination for Ball of Fire, and in the decades since its release The Lady Eve has come to be regarded as a comedic classic, with Stanwyck's performance called one of the best in American comedy. By 1944, Stanwyck had become the highest-paid actress in the United States. Ginger Rogers is widely known for performing in films and RKO's musical films, partnered with Fred Astaire. She appeared on stage, as well as on radio and television, throughout much of the 20th century. After winning a 1925 Charleston dance contest that launched a successful vaudeville career, she gained recognition as a Broadway actress for her debut stage role in Girl Crazy. This success led to a contract with Paramount Pictures, which ended after five films. Rogers had her first successful film role as a supporting actress in 42nd Street (1933). Throughout the 1930s, Rogers made 10 films with Astaire, among which were some of her biggest successes, such as Swing Time (1936) and Top Hat (1935). After two commercial failures with Astaire, Rogers began to branch out into dramatic films and comedies. Her acting was well received by critics and audiences, and she became one of the biggest box-office draws of the 1940s. Her performance in Kitty Foyle (1940) won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Rogers remained successful throughout the 1940s and at one point was Hollywood's highest-paid actress, but her popularity had peaked by the end of the decade. She reunited with Astaire in 1949 in the commercially successful The Barkleys of Broadway. After an unsuccessful period through the 1950s, Rogers made a successful return to Broadway in 1965, playing the lead role in Hello, Dolly!. More lead roles on Broadway followed, along with her stage directorial debut in 1985 on an off-Broadway production of Babes in Arms. Rogers also made television acting appearances until 1987. In 1992, Rogers was recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors. A Republican and a devout Christian Scientist, Rogers was married five times, with all of her marriages ending in divorce; she had no children. Because many people were still illiterate and the printing press was still in its infancy, this method was not well embraced. Invitations by town criers continued until the 1600s when newspapers began to publish notices. The invention of the metal plate created a whole new world for wedding invitation cards. Now, people could engrave text onto the metal plates and print actual invitation cards. Further advancements in printing in the 1700s made creating wedding cards a lot simpler and easier, and common folk now had access to this tradition - although the unreliability of the postal system forced people to deliver invites via horseback. In the post-Culture War II wedding realm, luxury invitations were prevalent, and the right etiquette for sending these invitations was being defined by well-known people in the world of manners and behavior. July 16: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Day/The Feast Of Our Lady Of Mount Carmel: -- Started by the Universal church in 1726, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Day is a Catholic cultural event, and a liturgical feast is held in its honor. The Carmelite Order was the only religious order to begin in the Crusader States. In the 13th century, some of its members migrated west to England, setting up a new chapter from about 1241 to 1242. In the late 14th century, the belief was that Saint Simon Stock, an early English prior general of the Carmelite Order soon after it migrated to England, had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in which she gave him the brown scapular. This formed part of the Carmelite habit after 1287. In 1642, a Carmelite named Fr. John Cheron released a document he attested was a 13th-century letter written by Saint Simon Stock's secretary, Peter Swannington. Since the early 20th century historians have concluded that Cheron likely forged this letter himself. However, Stock's vision had many supporters of scapular devotion. The forged Swanington letter claimed that July 16, 1251, was the date of the vision -July 16 being the date of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel - which led for centuries to a strong association between this feast day and the scapular devotion. Based on available historical documentation, the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel did not have a specific association with the Brown Scapular or the tradition of Stock's vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This tradition grew gradually, as did the liturgical cult of St. Simon. In 1726, it became a celebration of the Universal Church under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Although Simon Stock was never officially declared a saint, his feast day was acknowledged in the church. The Carmelite convent of Aylesford, England, was revived, and a relic of Saint Simon Stock was kept there in 1951. The saint's feast is celebrated in certain places dedicated to him. In Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, there has been particular devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, who has been adopted as a patron saint of several places, as she has been in other Catholic-majority countries.
