July 6: National Fried Chicken Day: In the United States, July 6th chicken lovers across the country recognize National Fried Chicken Day by feasting at a nearby restaurant, home, or an outdoor picnic. Scottish immigrants brought their tradition of deep-frying chicken in fat to the southern United States. After its introduction to the American South, fried chicken soon became a staple. Over time, cooks added seasonings and spices to enrich the flavor of the chicken. In the words of poet Maya Angelou, "The best comfort food will always be greens, cornbread and fried chicken.". Fried chicken is a dish consisting of chicken pieces floured or battered, then pan-fried, deep-fried or pressure-fried. The breading adds a crisp coating to the exterior of the chicken. Knowing how to get a good crisp on the chicken may seem elusive to some. However, some of the best cooks will tell you the keys to achieving the crispiest fried chicken involves seasoning well and early in the process, adding starch to your flour and frying your chicken at the right temperature. The oil should be 300_F. Finally, let the chicken rest before serving to allow the juices to be absorbed back into the meat. Just like beef and pork, the chicken will be more tender when we allow it to rest. Traditionally the chicken is fried in lard. However, corn oil, peanut oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil are also frequently used. To observe National Fried Chicken Day, eat some fried chicken! Serve it with your favorite side dishes, too. Potato salad, cornbread, greens, or watermelon. And be sure to share! Invite some friends over, make some fried chicken, and share photos on social media using #NationalFriedChickenDay!

July 6: National Hand Roll Day (National Sushi Roll Day): -- A holiday dedicated to a delicious Japanese hand roll, which has become a part of life and a favorite delicacy of people from all over the world. On this day, you can slowly enjoy a delicious hand roll, which replaced the usual sushi. The day is celebrated to encourage those consumers and food producers who have not yet dared to try these incredibly delicious hand-made rolls. Hand-made rolls, also called temaki, are paper-thin, nori sheets wrapped in a cone around sticky acetic rice and a diversity of seafood and vegetable fillings. 'Nori' is a specific species of seaweed. These rolls can be eaten as standalone food or as a snack. It is a great food for parties because guests can choose their favorite filling and roll their own. Raw fish is rarely used when making hand rolls. These can be smoked salmon, boiled shrimp, crab, and a lot of vegetables such as cucumbers, avocados, onions, mushrooms, and carrots. Stuffing can be alternated with eggs, which are used to make omelets and cut into strips, sesame, and tofu. National Hand Roll Day is founded by Sushi Nozawa Group, a group behind SUGARFISH, Kazunori, and Nozawa Bar. This day was created to celebrate the hand roll and the introduction of Chef Nozawa's cylindrical roll in the United States more than 40 years ago. National Hand Roll Day is a celebration of Japanese sushi, which delights the senses with bright colors, flavors, and textures. In 2014, the Sushi Nozawa Group opened the Original Hand Roll Bar, also known as Kazunori, to give people a good experience eating hand rolls that are something special and worthy of their restaurant. It is noteworthy that Kazunori prepares rolls only from the freshest fish and homemade sauces, specially collected seaweed, and branded warm rice. Guests who eat dinner at the bar enjoy the roll, watching the chef cook their rolls.

July 6: International Kissing Day: -- Whether it's a peck on the cheek for a good friend or a big, romantic smooch for your significant other, shower your loved ones in kisses today! There are as many types of kiss as there are people to pucker up, and who doesn't love a good kiss? Whether it's a quick friendly peck on the cheek between friends, or a long, passionate tongue-lashing between new partners, International Kissing Day celebrates this most enjoyable of activities and the part it plays in cultures throughout the world. If you haven't shown your partner just how much you enjoy them, maybe International Kissing Day is your chance to remind them with a toe-curling kiss! International Kissing Day was established in 2006 to focus on the kissing that takes place between lovers, and to celebrate the place it holds in our society. One of the most surprising things about this holiday is the research that revealed that 5% of people over the age of 45 are locking lips at least 31 times a week! Who would have thought that old fires burn so hot? Events are organized all over to celebrate International Kissing Day, with events for those who have lovers, and those who are looking for them. Kiss-in's let you test drive a potential date's lips before you ever hook up with them for an actual date, and kissing classes help you learn how to become an amazing kisser. But romantic kissing isn't the only place that kissing happens in our culture and society. Among high society, it's not at all unusual to greet with a kiss on each cheek, a tradition that heralds back to the Old World. Young children frequently get kisses from their loving parents, though it's something that tends to fade as children get older. Overall, kissing has played an important role in social bonding since time out of mind, and International Kissing Day celebrates them all!

July 6, 1935: #BOTD: #HBD! The 14th Dalai Lama (Tibetan: Dalai, "Ocean"; Lama, "Wisdom"; Dalai Lama, "Ocean Of Wisdom"), full spiritual name: Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, shortened as Tenzin Gyatso, as of 2026 the incumbent Dalai Lama, the highest spiritual leader and head of Tibetan Buddhism is #born Lhamo Thondup to a farming family in Taktser (Hongya village), in the traditional Tibetan region of Amdo, at the time a Chinese frontier district. He was selected as the tulku of the 13th Dalai Lama in 1937, and formally recognised as the 14th Dalai Lama in 1939. He served as the resident spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet before 1959 and subsequently led the Tibetan government in exile represented by the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala, India. A belief central to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition as well as the institution of the Dalai Lama is that the reincarnated person is a living Bodhisattva, specifically an emanation of Avalokitesvara (in Sanskrit) or Chenrezig (in Tibetan), the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The Mongolic words "Dalai Lama" mean "Ocean Of Wisdom". The 14th Dalai Lama is also known to Tibetans as Gyalwa Rinpoche ("The Precious Jewel-like Buddha-Master"), Kundun ("The Presence"), and Yizhin Norbu ("The Wish-Fulfilling Gem"). His devotees, as well as much of the Western world, often call him His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He is the leader and a monk of the newest Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. On November 17, 1950, Lhamo Dondrub was officially named the 14th Dalai Lama at the age of fifteen, and thereby invested with temporal duties as head of The Ganden Phodran (the Tibetan government) who had so installed him, in the aftermath of The Battle Of Chamdo, in which Peoples Republic Of China (PRC) forces annexed Central Tibet; he continued to hold temporaral power over The Ganden Phodran and Tibet until his exile in 1959. As with the recognition process for his predecessor, a Golden Urn selection process was waived and approved by the Nationalist government of China. His enthronement ceremony was held in Lhasa on February 22, 1940. During the 1959 Tibetan uprising, the Dalai Lama escaped to India, where he continues to live. On April 29, 1959, the Dalai Lama established the independent Tibetan government in exile in the north Indian hill station of Mussoorie, which then moved in May 1960 to Dharamshala, where he resides. He retired as political head in 2011 to make way for a democratic government, the Central Tibetan Administration. The Dalai Lama advocates for the welfare of Tibetans and since the early 1970s has called for the Middle Way Approach with China to peacefully resolve the issue of Tibet. This policy, adopted democratically by the Central Tibetan Administration and the Tibetan people through long discussions, seeks to find a middle ground, "a practical approach and mutually beneficial to both Tibetans and Chinese, in which Tibetans can preserve their culture and religion and uphold their identity," and China's assertion of sovereignty over Tibet, aiming to address the interests of both parties through dialogue and communication and for Tibet to remain a part of China. He criticised the CIA Tibetan program, saying that its sudden end in 1972 proved it was primarily aimed at serving American interests. Until reaching his mid-80s, the Dalai Lama travelled worldwide to give Tibetan Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism teachings, and his Kalachakra teachings and initiations were international events. He also attended conferences on a wide range of subjects, including the relationship between religion and science, met with other world leaders, religious leaders, philosophers, and scientists, online and in-person. Since 2018, he has continued to teach on a reduced schedule, limiting his travel to within India only, and occasionally addressing international audiences via live webcasts. His work includes focus on the environment, economics, women's rights, nonviolence, interfaith dialogue, physics, astronomy, Buddhism and science, cognitive neuroscience, reproductive health and sexuality. The Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. Time magazine named the Dalai Lama Gandhi's spiritual heir to nonviolence. The 12th General Assembly of the Asian Buddhist Conference for Peace in New Delhi unanimously recognised the Dalai Lama's contributions to global peace, his lifelong efforts in uniting Buddhist communities worldwide, and bestowed upon him the title of "Universal Supreme Leader of the Buddhist World"; they also designated July 6, his birthday, as the Universal Day of Compassion.

July 6, 1881: Archaelogy (Archeology): Great Discoveries Of Archaeology: Ancient Egypt: New Kingdom: Twenty-First Dynasty (The Twenty-First Dynasty Of Egypt, Dynasty XXI, 21st Dynasty, Dynasty 21): The Royal Cache (TT320 [previously referred to as DB320]): -- Authorities arrive at TT320 without the head of the Egyptian Service of Antiquities, because he was on vacation. Instead, the only other European member of the team, Emil Brugsch, was sent with one of the first Egyptian Egyptologists, Ahmed Kamal, to explore and examine TT320. Rather than just exploring, Brugsch had all of the contents, including the mummies, of this tomb removed within 48 hours of them entering this tomb. The Royal Cache is an Ancient Egyptian tomb located next to Deir el-Bahri, in the Theban Necropolis, opposite the modern city of Luxor. It contains an extraordinary collection of mummified remains and funeral equipment of more than 50 kings, queens, and other royal family members of the New Kingdom, as it was used as a cache for royal mummies during the Twenty-first Dynasty. The eleven pharaohs found there include 1 of the 9 pharaohs from the 17th dynasty, 5 of the 15 pharaohs from the 18th dynasty, 3 of the 8 pharaohs from the 19th dynasty, and 2 of the 10 pharaohs from the 20th dynasty. The tomb was originally used as last resting place of High Priest of Amun Pinedjem II, his wife Nesikhons, and other close family members. Its discovery by locals in 1871, and by Egyptologists in 1881, caused a sensation. The mummies quickly became a highlight of the new Egyptian Museum (then in Giza). In 1969, the discovery was dramatized in The Night of Counting the Years, which became one of Egypt's most widely respected films. In 2021 the mummies were moved to a modern display area in the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, following the high profile Pharaohs' Golden Parade.

July 6, 1964: Aesthetics: Performing Arts: Premieres: Film Premieres: British Film Premieres: -- The musical comedy film A Hard Day's Night starring the English rock band The Beatles is released in the UK. Directed by Richard Lester and starring Beatles members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, the movie was filmed and released during the height of Beatlemania. It was written by Alun Owen and originally released by United Artists. The film portrays 36 hours in the lives of the group as they prepare for a television performance. The film was a financial and critical success and was nominated for two Academy Awards including Best Original Screenplay. Forty years after its release, Time magazine rated it as one of the 100 all-time great films. In 1997, British critic Leslie Halliwell described it as a "comic fantasia with music; an enormous commercial success with the director trying every cinematic gag in the book" and awarded it a full four stars. The film is credited as being one of the most influential of all musical films, inspiring numerous spy films, the Monkees' television show and pop music videos, and various other low-budget musical film vehicles starring British pop groups, such as the Gerry and the Pacemakers film Ferry Cross the Mersey and John Boorman's vehicle for The Dave Clark Five, Catch Us If You Can. In 1999, the British Film Institute ranked it the 88th greatest British film of the 20th century. On June 26, 1964, The American version of album A Hard Day's Night is released in the US by United Artists Records. It was released two weeks later in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1964 by Parlophone, with a different track listing. It was the Beatles' third studio album, with side one containing songs from the soundtrack to their film of the same name. In contrast to the Beatles' first two albums, all 13 tracks on A Hard Day's Night were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, showcasing the development of their songwriting partnership. The album includes the song "A Hard Day's Night", with its distinctive opening chord, and "Can't Buy Me Love", both transatlantic number-one singles for the band. Several of the songs feature George Harrison playing a Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar, a sound that was influential on the Byrds and other groups in the folk rock movement.

July 6, 1189: The English Monarchy (The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of England): Royal Accessions: Successions To The English Throne: -- Richard I, also known as Richard Coeur De Lion (French: Richard The Lionheart) and as Good King Richard in fiction and film in tales of Robin Hood, Third Crusade military chief and troubadour (d. 6 April 1199) accedes to the English throne upon the death of his father, King Henry II, whom Richard along with his ally King Philip II Of France had defeated at Ballans, France on July 4, 1189. Suffering from a bleeding ulcer, Henry had retreated to Chinon castle in Anjou, France. There Henry agreed to name Richard his heir apparent. Two days later Henry died in Chinon, aged 56. and Richard succeeded him as King of England, Duke of Normandy, and Count of Anjou. He is buried at Fontevraud Abbey in Anjou. Roger of Howden claimed that Henry's corpse bled from the nose in Richard's presence, which was assumed to be a sign that Richard had caused his death. Richard I reigned as King Of England from then on until his death. He also ruled as Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine and Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, and Nantes, and was overlord of Brittany at various times during the same period. He was the third of five sons of King Henry II Of England and Duchess Eleanor Of Aquitaine. He was known as Richard Coeur De Lion or Richard The Lionheart because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior. He was also known in the troubadourr language of Occitan as Oc e No (Yes and No), because of his reputation for terseness. By the age of 16, Richard had taken command of his own army, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his father. Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, leading the campaign after the departure of Philip II of France and scoring considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin, although he did not retake Jerusalem from Saladin. Richard spoke both French and Occitan as well as English, having been born in England, where he spent his childhood; before becoming king, however, he lived most of his adult life in the Duchy of Aquitaine, in the southwest of France. Following his accession, he spent very little time, perhaps as little as six months, in England. Most of his life as king was spent on Crusade, in captivity, or actively defending his lands in France. Rather than regarding his kingdom as a responsibility requiring his presence as ruler, he has been perceived as preferring to use it merely as a source of revenue to support his armies. Nevertheless, he was seen as a pious hero by his subjects. He remains one of the few kings of England remembered by his epithet, rather than regnal number, and is an enduring iconic figure both in England and in France. On April 6, 1199: Richard died from an infection following the removal of an arrow from his shoulder that had been shot by a crossbow bolt on March 25. The wound swiftly became gangrenous. Richard asked to have the crossbowman brought before him; called alternatively Pierre (or Peter) Basile, John Sabroz, Dudo, and Bertrand de Gourdon (from the town of Gourdon) by chroniclers, the man turned out (according to some sources, but not all) to be a boy. He said Richard had killed his father and two brothers, and that he had killed Richard in revenge. He expected to be executed, but as a final act of mercy Richard forgave him, saying "Live on, and by my bounty behold the light of day", before he ordered the boy to be freed and sent away with 100 shillings. It is unclear whether the King's pardon was upheld following his death.

July 6, 1923: #BOTD: #HBD: Wojciech Jaruzelski, Polish general, politician and de facto leader of the Polish People's Republic from 1981 until 1989, 1st President of Poland (d.( May 25, 2014) is #born to Polish nobility in Kurow in eastern (then-central) Poland, Jaruzelski was deported with his family to Siberia by the NKVD after the invasion of Poland. Assigned to forced labour in the Siberian wilderness, he developed photokeratitis which forced him to wear protective sunglasses for the rest of his life. In 1943, Jaruzelski joined the newly created First Polish Army and fought alongside the Soviets against Nazi Germany in the Eastern Front, most notably in the liberation of Warsaw and in the Battle of Berlin. Following the Polish October and the expatriation of Marshal Konstantin Rokossovsky back to the Soviet Union, Jaruzelski became the chief political officer of the Polish People's Army and eventually Polish Minister of Defence in 1968. He was the First Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party between 1981 and 1989, making him the last leader of the Polish People's Republic. Jaruzelski served as Prime Minister from 1981 to 1985, the Chairman of the Council of State from 1985 to 1989 and briefly as President of Poland from 1989 to 1990, when the office of President was restored after 37 years. He was also the last commander-in-chief of the Polish People's Army, which in 1990 became the Polish Armed Forces. Jaruzelski became the First Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party and leader of Poland after the brief one-year term of Stanislaw Kania. Kania's predecessor, Edward Gierek, left Poland indebted by accepting loans from foreign creditors and the country's economy, rocked by strikes, was unstable by the time Jaruzelski became head of state. As Poland headed towards insolvency, rationing was enforced due to shortages of basic goods, which only contributed to the tense social and political situation. The declining living and working conditions triggered anger among the masses and strengthened anti-Communist sentiment; the Solidarity union was also gaining support, which worried the Polish Central Committee and the Soviet Union, which viewed Solidarity as a threat to the Warsaw Pact. Fearing a Soviet intervention similar to those in Hungary (1956) and Czechoslovakia (1968), Jaruzelski imposed martial law in Poland on December 13, 1981 to crush the anti-communist opposition. The military junta, curfew and travel restrictions lasted until July 22, 1983. By the mid-1980s, censorship lost its importance and the authority of the United Workers' Party disintegrated, allowing more freedom of expression in Poland. During the revolutions of 1989 in Central and Eastern Europe, Jaruzelski supported the change of government for the benefit of the country and resigned after the Polish Round Table Agreement, which led to multi-party elections in Poland. He briefly served as President of Poland from July 1989 but exercised no real power and, in the 1990 Polish presidential election, Lech Walesa succeeded him as the first President elected in a popular vote. Having served as the country's leader during its turbulent final years of Communist rule, Jaruzelski remains a controversial figure in Poland to this day. He was praised for allowing the country's peaceful transition into democracy, but was also fiercely criticized by contemporaries for his imposition of martial law, including his government's violent suppression of protests and imprisonment of thousands of opposition activists without definite charges, among other human rights violations. Wojciech Jaruzelski died aged 90 in a Warsaw hospital after suffering a stroke earlier that month. He had reportedly requested last rites by a Catholic priest. President Bronislaw Komorowski, former Presidents Lech Walesa and Aleksander Kwasniewski, and hundreds of other Poles attended his funeral mass at the Field Cathedral of the Polish Army in Warsaw on May 30. Walesa and Komorowski, who were among the thousands imprisoned during the crackdown on Solidarity in 1981, both said that judgment against Jaruzelski "would be left to God". Jaruzelski was cremated and buried with full military honours at Powazki Military Cemetery in Warsaw, near the grave of Boleslaw Bierut, the first Communist leader of Poland after World War II. The decision to bury Jaruzelski at Powazki, the burial place of Polish soldiers killed defending their country since the early 19th century, caused protests.

July 6, 1944: The Jim Crow Era (1896-1954): Anti-Black Racism In The United States: Segregation: Racial Segregation: Civil Rights Protests: Civil Rights Protests In The United States: Transport And Bus Segregation In The United States: Transport And Bus Segregation In The United States Army: Transport And Bus Segregation In The United States Army During World War II: -- Second Lieutenant Jackie Robinson, future national American hero Major League Baseball player, courageously derails his military career when he refuses to move to the back of an Army bus in Fort Hood, Texas, beginning a tortured and convoluted process ultimately leading to a court-martial and a full acquittal. While awaiting results of hospital tests on the ankle he had injured in junior college, Robinson boarded an Army bus with a fellow officer's wife; although the Army had commissioned its own unsegregated bus line, the bus driver ordered Robinson to move to the back of the bus. Robinson refused. The driver backed down, but after reaching the end of the line, summoned the military police, who took Robinson into custody. When Robinson later confronted the investigating duty officer about racist questioning by the officer and his assistant, the officer recommended Robinson be court-martialed. When Robinson's commanding officer, Col. Paul L. Bates, white commander of Robinson's 761st "Black Panthers" Tank Battalion - the first black tank battalion to enter combat in World War II - refused to authorize the court-martial, Robinson was summarily transferred (JC wonders: who ordered him transferred?) to the 758th Battalion - where that unit's commander quickly consented to charge Robinson with multiple offenses, including, among other charges, public drunkenness, even though Robinson did not drink. By the time of the court-martial in August 1944, the charges against Robinson had been reduced to two counts of insubordination for his registering complaints about the racist tone of the questioning. Remarkably for the time, location and situation, an all-white panel of nine officers unanimously acquitted Robinson of all charges. Although his former unit, the 761st Tank Battalion, became the first black tank unit to see combat in World War II, Robinson's court-martial proceedings prohibited him from being deployed overseas; thus, he never saw combat action. After his acquittal, he was transferred to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, where he served as a coach for army athletics, but he remarkbly received an honorable discharge shortly afterward in November 1944.

July 6, 1747: #BOTD: #HBD! John Paul Jones sometimes referred to as the "Father of the American Navy" (an epithet that he shares with John Barry and John Adams), Scottish-American admiral and diplomat, the United States' first well-known naval commander in the American Revolutionary War (d. July 18, 1792) is #born John Paull (he added "Jones" later in life) on the estate of Arbigland near Kirkbean in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright on the southwest coast of Scotland. John Paul Jones made many friends (including John Hancock and Benjamin Franklin), and many enemies among America's political elites, who accused him of piracy. His actions in British waters during the Revolution earned him an international reputation which persists to this day. He later served in the Imperial Russian Navy, subsequently obtaining the rank of rear admiral. John Paul Jones died of kidney failure aged 45 in Paris, France while on his way as a U.S. Consul to treat with the Dey of Algiers for the release of American captives. A small procession of servants, friends and loyal family walked his body four miles (6.4 km) for burial. He was buried in Paris at the Saint Louis Cemetery, which belonged to the French royal family. Four years later, France's revolutionary government sold the property and the cemetery was forgotten. In 1905, Jones's remains were identified by U.S. Ambassador to France Gen. Horace Porter, who had searched for six years to track down the body using faulty copies of Jones's burial record.

July 6, 1809: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The French Revolution: The French Revolutionary And Napoleonic Wars (The Great French War) (The French Revolutionary Wars, The Napoleonic Wars): The Napoleonic Wars: The Coalition Wars: The War Of The Fifth Coalition: The Battle Of Wagram: -- The largest battle to date of the Napoleonic Wars, and indeed the largest battle in European history up to its time, the two-day Battle Of Wagram (pronounced "Vagram"), concludes in a costly but decisive victory for Emperor Napoleon's French and allied army against the Austrian army under the command of Archduke Charles of Austria-Teschen. The battle led to the breakup of the Fifth Coalition, the Austrian and British-led alliance against France. Wagram was the largest battle in European history up to its time. In 1809, the French military presence in Germany was diminished as Napoleon transferred a number of soldiers to fight in the Peninsular War. As a result, the Austrian Empire saw its chance to recover some of its former sphere of influence and invaded the Kingdom of Bavaria, a French ally. Recovering from his initial surprise, Napoleon beat the Austrian forces and occupied Vienna at the beginning of May 1809. Despite the string of sharp defeats and the loss of the empire's capital, Archduke Charles salvaged an army, with which he retreated north of the Danube. This allowed the Austrians to continue the war. Towards the end of May, Napoleon resumed the offensive, suffering a surprise defeat at the Battle of Aspern-Essling. It took Napoleon six weeks to prepare his next offensive, for which he amassed a 165,000-man French, German and Italian army in the vicinity of Vienna. The Battle Of Wagram began after Napoleon crossed the Danube with the bulk of these forces during the night of 4 July and attacked the 145,000-man strong Austrian army. Having successfully crossed the river, Napoleon attempted an early breakthrough and launched a series of evening attacks against the Austrian army. The Austrians were thinly spread in a wide semicircle, but held a naturally strong position. After the attackers enjoyed some initial success, the defenders regained the upper hand and the attacks failed. Bolstered by his success, the next day at dawn Archduke Charles launched a series of attacks along the entire battle line, seeking to take the opposing army in a double envelopment. The offensive failed against the French right but nearly broke Napoleon's left. However, the Emperor countered by launching a cavalry charge, which temporarily halted the Austrian advance. He then redeployed IV Corps to stabilise his left, while setting up a grand battery, which pounded the Austrian right and centre. The tide of battle turned and the Emperor launched an offensive along the entire line, while Marechal Louis-Nicolas Davout drove an offensive, which turned the Austrian left, and rendered Charles's position untenable. Towards mid-afternoon on 6 July, Charles admitted defeat and led a retreat, frustrating enemy attempts to pursue. After the battle, Charles remained in command of a cohesive force and decided to retreat to Bohemia. However, the Grande Armee eventually caught up with him and scored a victory at the Battle of Znaim. With the battle still raging, Charles decided to ask for an armistice, effectively ending the war. With 80,000 casualties, the two-day Battle Of Wagram was particularly bloody, mainly due to the use of 1,000 artillery pieces and the expenditure of over 180,000 rounds of artillery ammunition on a flat battlefield packed with some 300,000 men. Although Napoleon was the uncontested winner, he failed to secure an overwhelming victory and the Austrian casualties were only slightly greater than those of the French and allies. Nonetheless, the defeat was serious enough to shatter the morale of the Austrians, who could no longer find the will to continue the struggle. The resulting Treaty of Schoenbrunn meant the loss of one sixth of the Austrian Empire's subjects, along with some territories.

July 6, 1885: Great Medical Discoveries: Disease: The History Of Disease: Infectious Diseases (Transmissible Diseases, Communicable Diseases): Rabies (Hydrophobia): Vaccines: Rabies Vaccines: The Louis-Roux Rabies Vaccine: -- Louis Pasteur, French biologist, microbiologist and chemist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation and pasteurization, successfully tests his vaccine against rabies on Joseph Meister, a boy who was badly mauled by a rabid dog. This was done at some personal risk for Pasteur, since he was not a licensed physician and could have faced prosecution for treating the boy. After consulting with physicians, he decided to go ahead with the treatment. Over 11 days, Meister received 13 inoculations, each inoculation using viruses that had been weakened for a shorter period of time. Three months later he examined Meister and found that he was in good health. Pasteur was hailed as a hero and the legal matter was not pursued. Analysis of his laboratory notebooks shows that Pasteur had treated two people before his vaccination of Meister. One survived but may not actually have had rabies, and the other died of rabies. Pasteur began treatment of Jean-Baptiste Jupille on October 20, 1885, and the treatment was successful. Later in 1885, people, including four children from the United States, went to Pasteur's laboratory to be inoculated. In 1886, he treated 350 people, of which only one developed rabies. The treatment's success laid the foundations for the manufacture of many other vaccines. The first of the Pasteur Institutes was also built on the basis of this achievement.

Anne Frank (1929-1945) was born in Frankfurt, Germany. She is perhaps the best known victim of the Nazi Holocaust, having kept a diary that she received as a gift for her thirteenth birthday in 1942. Anne and her family moved from Germany to Amsterdam to flee Nazi persecution, then went into hiding in a small attic after Holland was invaded by Nazis. Anne, a girl on the verge of womanhood, was unable to go outside for any reason. She used her diary to cope with the boredom, fear, annoyances, and loneliness of captivity. Her family's hiding place was eventually discovered and Anne and her family were deported to Nazi concentration camps. She contracted typhus and died at Bergen-Belsen in 1945. After the war, her father published her diary, which inspired the world, revealing a young woman who had managed to remain hopeful, despite it all.

July 6, 1944: Fires: Fire Disasters: Fire Disasters In The United States: Human Stampedes: Human Stampedes In The United States: The Hartford Circus Fire: -- One of America' worst fire disasters kills approximately 168 people and injures over 700 in Hartford, Connecticut. Emmett Kelly, American actor and circus performer who created the clown figure "Weary Willie" based on the hobos of the Depression era, was preparing to perform there in a matinee show of the Ringling Brothers circus for an audience of 6,000. 20 minutes into the show, the circus tent, which had been waterproofed with paraffin wax and gasoline, caught fire. Kelly was among those who acted quickly to help extinguish the fire, and then he helped panicked audience members-mostly women and children (due to World War II) to swiftly exit the tent. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Kelly's actions that day were immortalized by audience member Ralph Emerson, who took a photograph of Kelly rushing toward the burning tent in his full clown make-up and costume, carrying a single bucket of water. The photograph was published in Life magazine on July 17, 1944. According to eyewitnesses, it was one of few times in which he was seen crying. The fire affected Kelly deeply and for the remainder of his life; according to his grandson, Joey Kelly, he "rarely spoke of the fire to anyone other than family."

July 6, 1887: #BOTD: #HBD! Marc Chagall , Russian-Belarusian-French painter and poet (d. March 28, 1985) is #born Moishe Shagal into a Jewish family in Liozna, near the city of Vitebsk, Belarus, then part of the Russian Empire. An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in virtually every artistic format, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints. Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century" (though Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity"). According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists". For decades, he "had also been respected as the world' preeminent Jewish artist". Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN, and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opera. Marc Chagall died of undetermined causes in the evening at his home in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France, aged 97. His relationship with his Jewish identity was unresolved and tragic; he would have died without Jewish rites, had not a Jewish stranger stepped forward and said the kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead, over his coffin. Chagall is buried alongside his last wife Valentina "Vava" Brodsky Chagall, in the multi-denominational cemetery in the traditional artists' town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, in the French region of Provence.

July 6, 1946: #BOTD: #HBD! Sylvester Stallone, American actor, director, filmmaker and screenwriter, the only actor in the history of American cinema to have starred in a box-office number-one film across six consecutive decades, is #born Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, the elder son of Francesco "Frank" Stallone Sr. (1919-2011), a hairdresser and beautician, and Jacqueline "Jackie" Stallone (nee Labofish; 1921-2020), an astrologer, dancer, and promoter of women's wrestling. His Italian father was born in Gioia del Colle, Apulia, Italy and moved to the U.S. in the 1930s,[ while his American mother is of French (Breton) and Ashkenazi Jewish descent. His younger brother is actor and musician Frank Stallone. After his beginnings as a struggling actor for a number of years upon arriving to New York City in 1969 and later Hollywood in 1974, he won his first critical acclaim as an actor for his co-starring role as Stanley Rosiello in The Lords of Flatbush. Stallone subsequently found gradual work as an extra or side character in films with a sizable budget until he achieved his greatest critical and commercial success as an actor and screenwriter, starting in 1976 with his role as boxer Rocky Balboa, in the first film of the successful Rocky series (1976-present), for which he also wrote the screenplays. In the films, Rocky is portrayed as an underdog boxer who fights numerous brutal opponents, and wins the world heavyweight championship twice. In 1977, Stallone was the third actor in cinema to be nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor. Stallone's film Rocky was inducted into the National Film Registry, and had its props placed in the Smithsonian Museum. Stallone's use of the front entrance to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the Rocky series led the area to be nicknamed the Rocky Steps. Philadelphia has a statue of the Rocky character placed permanently near the museum, and he was voted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Up until 1982, Stallone's films were not big box-office successes unless they were Rocky sequels, and none received the critical acclaim achieved with the first Rocky. This changed with the successful action film First Blood in which he portrayed the PTSD-plagued soldier John Rambo. Originally an adaptation of the eponymous novel by David Morell, First Blood's script was significantly altered by Stallone during the film's production. Stallone would play the role in a total of five Rambo films (1982-2019). From the mid-1980s through to the late 1990s, Stallone would go on to become one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors of that era by appearing in a slew of commercially successful action films which were however generally panned by critics. These include Cobra, Tango and Cash, Cliffhanger, the better received Demolition Man, and The Specialist. Stallone saw a decline in popularity in the early 2000s but rebounded back to prominence in 2006 with a sixth installment in the Rocky series and 2008 with a fourth in the Rambo series. In the 2010s, Stallone launched The Expendables films series (2010-present), in which he played the lead as the mercenary Barney Ross. In 2013, he starred in the successful Escape Plan, and acted in its sequels. In 2015, Stallone returned to the Rocky series with Creed, that serve as spin-off films focusing on Adonis "Donnie" Creed played by Michael B. Jordan, the son of the ill-fated boxer Apollo Creed, to whom the long-retired Rocky is a mentor. Reprising the role brought Stallone praise, and his first Golden Globe award for the first Creed, as well as a third Oscar nomination, having been first nominated for the same role 40 years prior. Since 2022, he has starred in the television series Tulsa King for Paramount+.

July 6, 1927: #BOTD: #HBD! Pat Paulsen, American comedian, actor, satirist and activist, notable for his roles on several of the Smothers Brothers television shows, and for his campaigns for President of the United States in 1968, 1972, 1980, 1988, 1992, and 1996, which had primarily comedic rather than political objectives (although his campaigns generated some protest votes for him) (d. April 25, 1997) is #born Patrick Layton Paulsen in South Bend, Washington, a small fishing town in Pacific County. After CBS sold five minutes of airtime on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour for a political ad, the show's writers came up with a bit in which Paulsen disclaimed association with the ad and stating that the ad was unfair to him as a candidate. CBS refused to air the bit, but the incident became the impetus for the Smothers Brothers writers launching a Pat Paulsen presidential campaign. His campaign in 1968 and succeeding years was grounded in comedy, although not without serious commentary. He ran the supposed campaigns using obvious lies, double talk, and tongue-in-cheek attacks on the major candidates, and he responded to all criticism with his catchphrase "Picky, picky, picky." His campaign slogans included, "Just a common, ordinary, simple savior of America's destiny," "We've upped our standards, now up yours," and, "United we sit." He gave essentially the same answer to every question on social issues: "To get to the meat of the matter, I will come right to the point, and take note of the fact that the heart of the issue in the final analysis escapes me." In announcing his candidacy on the Smothers Brothers show, Paulsen said, "Now I ask you: Will I solve our economic problems? Will I ease the causes of racial tension? Will I bring a peaceful end to Vietnam? Sure, why not?" Paulsen's name appeared on the ballot in New Hampshire for the Democratic primary several times. In 1996, he received 921 votes (one percent) to finish second to President Bill Clinton (76,754 votes); this was ahead of real politicians such as Buffalo mayor James D. Griffin. In 1992, he came in second to George Bush in the North Dakota Republican primary. In the 1992 Republican Party primaries, he received 10,984 votes total. Pat Paulsen died in Tijuana, Mexico from complications of pneumonia and kidney failure caused by cancer, aged 69. His burial details are unknown.

The 1941 Battle Of Smolensk, known as the First Battle Of Smolensk (German: Kesselschlacht bei Smolensk ("Cauldron-battle) of Smolensk)"; Russian: Smolenskaya strategicheskaya oboronitelnaya operatsiya, "Smolensk strategic defensive operation") was a battle during the second phase of Operation Barbarossa, the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union, in World War II. It was fought around the city of Smolensk between 10 July and 10 September 1941, about 400 km (250 mi) west of Moscow. The Wehrmacht had advanced 500 km (310 mi) into the USSR in the 18 days after the invasion on 22 June 1941. During the battle the German Army encountered unexpected resistance, leading to a two-month delay in their advance on Moscow. Three Soviet armies (the 16th, 19th and the 20th army) were encircled and destroyed just to the south of Smolensk, though significant numbers from the 19th and 20th armies managed to escape the pocket. Some historians have asserted that the losses of men and materiel incurred by the Wehrmacht during this drawn-out battle and the delay in the drive towards Moscow led to the defeat of the Wehrmacht by the Red Army in the Battle Of Moscow of December 1941.

It is the originating firearm of the Kalashnikov rifle (or "AK") family. Design work on the AK-47 began in 1945 during the closing months of World War II. In 1946, the AK-47 was presented for official military trials, and in 1948, the fixed-stock version was introduced into active service with selected units of the Soviet Army. An early development of the design was the AKS (S-Skladnoy or "folding"), which was equipped with an underfolding metal shoulder stock. In early 1949, the AK-47 was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces and used by the majority of the member states of the Warsaw Pact. Even after seven decades, the model and its variants remain the most popular and widely used assault rifles in the world because of its reliability under harsh conditions, low production costs compared to contemporary Western weapons, availability in virtually every geographic region, and ease of use. The AK-47 has been manufactured in many countries and has seen service with armed forces as well as irregular forces and insurgencies worldwide, and was the basis for developing many other types of individual, crew-served and specialised firearms. As of 2004, "Of the estimated 500 million firearms worldwide, approximately 100 million belong to the Kalashnikov family, three-quarters of which are AK-47s".

July 6, 1919: Aviation: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Military Aviation: Lighter Than Air Aviation (Lighter-Than-Air-Aviation): The History Of Ballooning: The History Of Airships (The History Of Dirigibles, The History Of Dirigible Balloons): The History Of Rigid Airships: R33-Class Airships: The R.34: -- The British dirigible airship R34 completes the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by an airship when it lands in Mineola, New York, after a flight of 108 hours with virtually no fuel left, a journey that began on July 2, 1919. The R34 made her first flight on March 14, 1919 and was delivered to her service base at East Fortune on May 29 after a 21-hour flight from Inchinnan. It was then decided to attempt the first return Atlantic crossing, under the command of Major George Scott. R34 had never been intended as a passenger carrier and extra accommodation was arranged by slinging hammocks in the keel walkway. A plate was welded to an engine exhaust pipe to allow for the preparation of hot food. The crew included Brigadier-General Edward Maitland and Zachary Lansdowne as the representative of the US Navy. William Ballantyne, one of the crew members scheduled to stay behind to save weight, stowed away with the crew's mascot, a small tabby kitten called "Whoopsie"; they emerged at 2.00 p.m. on the first day, too late to be dropped off. R34 left Britain on July 2, 1919 and arrived at Mineola, Long Island, United States, on 6 July after a flight of 108 hours with virtually no fuel left. As the landing party had no experience of handling large rigid airships, Major E. M. Pritchard jumped by parachute and so became the first person to reach American soil by air from Europe. This was the first East-West aerial crossing of the Atlantic and was achieved weeks after the first transatlantic aeroplane flight. The return journey to RNAS Pulham took place from July 10 to 13, and took 75 hours. Returned to East Fortune for a refit, R34 then flew to Howden, East Yorkshire, for crew training. On January 27, 1921 R34 set off on what should have been a routine exercise. Over the North Sea the weather worsened and a recall signal sent by radio was not received. Following a navigational error the craft flew into a hillside on the North Yorkshire Moors during the night, and the ship lost two propellers. She went back out to sea using the two remaining engines and in daylight followed the Humber Estuary back to Howden. Strong winds made it impossible to get her back into the shed and she was tied down outside for the night. By the morning further damage had occurred and R34 was written off and scrapped. The crew nicknamed her "Tiny".

July 6, 1971: #DOTD: #RIP: Louis Armstrong, nicknamed "Satchmo", "Satch", and "Pops", American trumpeter, composer, singer and occasional actor who was one of the most influential figures in American music, popular music and jazz (b. July 4, 1900 (Traditional), August 4, 1901 (Documented) #dies of a heart attack in his sleep at his home in Corona, Queens, New York City on July 6, 1971, a month before his 70th birthday. He was interred in Flushing Cemetery, Flushing, in Queens, New York City. His honorary pallbearers included Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Pearl Bailey, Count Basie, Harry James, Frank Sinatra, Ed Sullivan, Earl Wilson, Alan King, Johnny Carson and David Frost. Peggy Lee sang The Lord's Prayer at the services while Al Hibbler sang "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" and Fred Robbins, a long-time friend, gave the eulogy. Duke Ellington, quoted in DownBeat magazine in 1971, said, "If anybody was a master, it was Louis Armstrong. He was and will continue to be the embodiment of jazz." In 1950, Bing Crosby, the most successful vocalist of the first half of the 20th century, said, "He is the beginning and the end of music in America." Louis Armstrong was born Louis Daniel Armstrong New Orleans; Armstrong often stated that he was born on July 4, 1900, a date that has been noted in many biographies. Although he died in 1971, it was not until the mid-1980s that his true birth date, August 4, 1901, was discovered by the music historian and researcher Tad Jones through the examination of baptismal records while researching an unpublished biography of Louis Armstrong's early life. Pops' career spanned five decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and different eras in music. Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" trumpet and cornet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo performance. With his instantly recognizable gravelly voice, Armstrong was also an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also originated scat singing on the Hot Five recording "Heebie Jeebies" in 1926.

July 5, 1809: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The French Revolution: The French Revolutionary And Napoleonic Wars (The Great French War) (The French Revolutionary Wars, The Napoleonic Wars): The Napoleonic Wars: The Coalition Wars: The War Of The Fifth Coalition: The Battle Of Wagram: -- The largest battle of the Napoleonic Wars, and indeed the largest battle in European history up to its time, the Battle Of Wagram is fought between the French and Austrian Empires. The Battle Of Wagram (Pronounced "Vagram") (5-6 July 1809) was a military engagement of the Napoleonic Wars that ended in a costly but decisive victory for Emperor Napoleon I's French and allied army against the Austrian army under the command of Archduke Charles of Austria-Teschen. The battle led to the breakup of the Fifth Coalition, the Austrian and British-led alliance against France.

July 6, 1189: #DOTD: #RIP: Henry II, also known as Henry Curtmantle (French: Court-Manteau), Henry FitzEmpress or Henry Plantagenet, who ruled as Count of Anjou, Count of Maine, Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Count of Nantes, King Of England and Lord Of Ireland, and at various times also controlled Wales, Scotland and Brittany (b. March 5, 1133) #dies aged 56 in Chinon castle in Anjou, France, two days after naming his son Richard his heir. Richard thereafter succeeded Henry as King of England, Duke of Normandy, and Count of Anjou. Henry is buried at Fontevraud Abbey in Anjou. Roger of Howden claimed that Henry's corpse bled from the nose in Richard's presence, which was assumed to be a sign that Richard had caused his death. Henry II was born Henry Plantagenet in Normandy at Le Mans, the eldest child of the Empress Matilda - also known as the Empress Maude, one of the claimants to the English throne during the civil war known as the Anarchy - and her second husband, Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou. In 1151, Henry married Eleanor Of Aquitaine, whose marriage to Louis VII of France had recently been annulled. On December 19, 1154: he was crownd Henry II Of England at Westminster Abbey. Henry was an energetic and sometimes ruthless ruler, driven by a desire to restore the lands and privileges of his grandfather Henry I. During the early years of his reign the younger Henry restored the royal administration in England, re-established hegemony over Wales and gained full control over his lands in Anjou, Maine and Touraine. Henry's desire to reform the relationship with the Church led to conflict with his former friend Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury. This controversy lasted for much of the 1160s and resulted in Becket's murder in 1170. Henry soon came into conflict with Louis VII and the two rulers fought what has been termed a "cold war" over several decades. Henry expanded his empire, often at Louis' expense, taking Brittany and pushing east into central France and south into Toulouse; despite numerous peace conferences and treaties, no lasting agreement was reached. By 1172, he controlled England, large parts of Wales, the eastern half of Ireland and the western half of France, an area that would later come to be called the Angevin Empire. Henry and Eleanor had eight children. As they grew up, tensions over the future inheritance of the empire began to emerge, encouraged by Louis and his son King Philip II. In 1173 Henry's heir apparent, "Young Henry", rebelled in protest; he was joined by his brothers, Richard The Lionheart and Duke of Brittany Geoffrey II, and by their mother, Eleanor Of Aquitaine. France, Scotland, Brittany, Flanders, and Boulogne allied themselves with the rebels. The Great Revolt was only defeated by Henry's vigorous military action and talented local commanders, many of them "new men" appointed for their loyalty and administrative skills. Young Henry and Geoffrey revolted again in 1183, resulting in Young Henry's death. The Norman invasion of Ireland provided lands for his youngest son John, but Henry struggled to find ways to satisfy all his sons' desires for land and immediate power. Philip successfully played on Richard's fears that Henry would make John king, and a final rebellion broke out in 1189. Decisively defeated by Philip and Richard at Ballans, France on July 4, 1189, and suffering from a bleeding ulcer. Henry's empire quickly collapsed during the reign of his youngest son John, however many of the changes Henry introduced during his long rule had long-term consequences. Henry's legal changes are generally considered to have laid the basis for the English Common Law, while his intervention in Brittany, Wales and Scotland shaped the development of their societies and governmental systems. "The Lion in Winter" is a 1966 play by James Goldman, depicting the personal and political conflicts of Henry II Of England, his wife Eleanor Of Aquitaine, their children and their guests during Christmas 1183. It premiered on Broadway at the Ambassador Theatre on March 3, 1966, starring Robert Preston and Rosemary Harris, who won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Eleanor. It was adapted by Goldman into an Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name, starring Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn. The play has been produced numerous times, including Broadway and West End revivals.

July 6, 1483: The English Monarchy (The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of England): Coronations: -- Richard III is crowned King Of England in Westminster Abbey, where all coronations of English and British monarchs have occurred since the William The Conqueror was coronated there in 1066. Richard III became King Of England on June 26, 1483, following a declaration by an assembly of both lords and commoners to this effect that further declared the de jure king, 12-year-old Edward V, was an illegitimate king due to his parents' marriage having been declared bigamous. Richard Plantagenet (October 2, 1452 - August 22, 1485), King Richard III of England from 1483 until his death, was King Of England and Lord of Ireland. He was the last king of the House Of York and the last of the Plantagenet dynasty. His defeat and death at the Battle Of Bosworth Field, the last decisive battle of the Wars Of The Roses, marked the end of the Middle Ages in England. He is the protagonist of Richard III, one of William Shakespeare's history/tragedy plays. Richard was created Duke of Gloucester in 1461 after the accession of his brother King Edward IV. In 1472, he married Anne Neville, daughter of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick. He governed northern England during Edward's reign, and played a role in the invasion of Scotland in 1482. When Edward IV died in April 1483, Richard was named Lord Protector of the realm for Edward's eldest son and successor, the 12-year-old Edward V. Arrangements were made for Edward V's coronation on 22 June 1483. Before the king could be crowned, the marriage of his parents was declared bigamous and therefore invalid. Now officially illegitimate, their children were barred from inheriting the throne. On 25 June, an assembly of lords and commoners endorsed a declaration to this effect, and proclaimed Richard as the rightful king. He was crowned on 6 July 1483. Edward and his younger brother Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, called the "Princes in the Tower", were not seen in public after August, and accusations circulated that they had been murdered on King Richard's orders, under the Tudor rule a few years later. There were two major rebellions against Richard during his reign. In October 1483, an unsuccessful revolt was led by staunch allies of Edward IV and Richard's former ally, Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham. Then, in August 1485, Henry Tudor and his uncle, Jasper Tudor, landed in southern Wales with a contingent of French troops, and marched through Pembrokeshire, recruiting soldiers. Henry's forces defeated Richard's army near the Leicestershire town of Market Bosworth. Richard was slain, making him the last English king to die in battle. Henry Tudor then ascended the throne as Henry VII. Historians consider Bosworth Field to be a defining moment of English and Welsh history. Richard's corpse was taken to the nearby town of Leicester and buried without ceremony. His original tomb monument is believed to have been removed during the English Reformation, and his remains were wrongly thought to have been thrown into the River Soar. In 2012, an archaeological excavation was commissioned by the Richard III Society on the site previously occupied by Grey Friars Priory. The University of Leicester identified the skeleton found in the excavation as that of Richard III as a result of radiocarbon dating, comparison with contemporary reports of his appearance, identification of trauma sustained at the Battle of Bosworth and comparison of his mitochondrial DNA with that of two matrilineal descendants of his sister Anne. He was reburied in Leicester Cathedral on March 26, 2015. The Battle Of Bosworth Field (or Battle of Bosworth) was the last significant battle of the Wars Of The Roses, the civil war between the Houses of Lancaster and York that extended across England in the latter half of the 15th century. Fought on 22 August 1485, the battle was won by the Lancastrians. Their leader Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, by his victory became the first English monarch of the Tudor dynasty.

July 6, 1553: #DOTD: #RIP: Edward VI, King Of England And Ireland from January 28, 1547 until his death (b, October 12, 1537) #dies at the age of 15 at Greenwich Palace at 8 pm. According to John Foxe's account of his death, his last words were: "I am faint; Lord have mercy upon me, and take my spirit". Edward was buried on August 8, 1553 immediately to the west of his grandfather Henry VII's tomb in the Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey, right under the Chapel's original altar, with reformed rites performed by Thomas Cranmer. The procession was led by "a grett company of chylderyn in ther surples" and watched by Londoners "wepyng and lamenting"; the funeral chariot, draped in cloth of gold, was topped by an effigy of Edward, with crown, sceptre, and garter. A monument was designed but not realised, leaving Edward's burial place unmarked right up until 1966, when an inscribed stone was laid in the chapel floor by Christ's Hospital school to commemorate its founder. The inscription reads as follows: "In Memory Of King Edward VI Buried In This Chapel This Stone Was Placed Here By Christ's Hospital In Thanksgiving For Their Founder 7 October 1966". The cause of Edward VI's death is not certain. As with many royal deaths in the 16th century, rumours of poisoning abounded, but no evidence has been found to support these. The Duke of Northumberland, whose unpopularity was underlined by the events that followed Edward's death, was widely believed to have ordered the imagined poisoning. Another theory held that Edward had been poisoned by Catholics seeking to bring Mary to the throne. The surgeon who opened Edward's chest after his death found that "the disease whereof his majesty died was the disease of the lungs". The Venetian ambassador reported that Edward had died of consumption -- in other words, tuberculosis -- a diagnosis accepted by many historians. Skidmore believes that Edward contracted tuberculosis after a bout of measles and smallpox in 1552 that suppressed his natural immunity to the disease. Loach suggests instead that his symptoms were typical of acute bronchopneumonia, leading to a "suppurating pulmonary infection" or lung abscess, septicaemia and kidney failure. Edward VI was born Prince Edward Tudor in his mother's room inside Hampton Court Palace, Middlesex, England. He succeeded to the thrones of England and Ireland after the death of his father Henry VIII on January 28, 1547, and was crowned on February 20, 1547 at the age of nine. The only surviving son of Henry VIII by his third wife, Jane Seymour, Edward was the first English monarch to be raised as a Protestant. During his reign, the realm was governed by a regency council because Edward never reached maturity. The council was first led by his uncle Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset (1547-1549), and then by John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland (1550-1553). Edward's reign was marked by many economic problems and social unrest that in 1549 erupted into riot and rebellion. An expensive war with Scotland, at first successful, ended with military withdrawal from Scotland and Boulogne-sur-Mer in exchange for peace. The transformation of the Church of England into a recognisably Protestant body also occurred under Edward, who took great interest in religious matters. His father, Henry VIII, had severed the link between the English Church and Rome but continued to uphold most Catholic doctrine and ceremony. It was during Edward's reign that Protestantism was established for the first time in England with reforms that included the abolition of clerical celibacy and the Mass, and the imposition of compulsory English in church services. In 1553, at age 15, Edward fell ill. When his sickness was discovered to be terminal, he and his council drew up a "Devise for the Succession" to prevent the country's return to Catholicism. Edward named his Protestant first cousin once removed, Lady Jane Grey, as his heir, excluding his half-sisters, Mary and Elizabeth. This decision was disputed following Edward's death, and Jane was deposed by Mary - the elder of the two half-sisters - nine days after becoming queen. Mary, a Catholic, reversed Edward's Protestant reforms during her reign, but Elizabeth restored them in 1559.

July 6, 1796 (O.S. June 25, 1796): #BOTD: Nicholas I, Emperor Of Russia, King Of Congress Poland, Grand Duke of Finland from 1825 to 1855 (d. March 2, 1855 [O.S. February 18, 1855]) is #born Nicholas Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov at The Gatchina Palace, Gatchina, Russian Empire. He was the third son of Paul I and younger brother of his predecessor, Alexander I. Nicholas's thirty-year reign began with the failed Decembrist revolt. He is mainly remembered as a reactionary whose controversial reign was marked by geographical expansion, centralisation of administrative policies, and repression of dissent both in Russia and among its neighbors. Nicholas had a happy marriage that produced a large family, with all of their seven children surviving childhood. Nicholas's biographer Nicholas V. Riasanovsky said that he displayed determination, singleness of purpose, and an iron will, along with a powerful sense of duty and a dedication to very hard work. He saw himself as a soldier -- a junior officer consumed by spit and polish. A handsome man, he was highly nervous and aggressive. Trained as a military engineer, he was a stickler for minute detail. In his public persona, stated Riasanovsky, "Nicholas I came to represent autocracy personified: infinitely majestic, determined and powerful, hard as stone, and relentless as fate." Nicholas I was instrumental in helping to create an independent Greek state and resumed the Russian conquest of the Caucasus by seizing Igdir Province and the remainder of modern-day Armenia and Azerbaijan from Qajar Iran during the Russo-Persian War (1826-1828). He ended the Russo-Turkish War (1828-1829) successfully as well. He crushed the November Uprising in Poland in 1831 and decisively aided Austria during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Later on, however, he led Russia into the Crimean War (1853-1856), with disastrous results. Historians emphasize that his micromanagement of the armies hindered his generals, as did his misguided strategy. Several historians have concluded that "the reign of Nicholas I was a catastrophic failure in both domestic and foreign policy." On the eve of his death, the Russian Empire reached its geographical zenith, spanning over 20 million square kilometers (7.7 million square miles), but had a desperate need for reform. Nicholas I died aged 58 of pneumonia at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russian Empire as The Crimean War continued. He had caught a chill and refused medical treatment, though there were rumors he was committing a passive suicide by refusing treatment. He is buried in The Peter And Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg. He reigned for 30 years, and was succeeded by his son Alexander II.

July 6, 1777: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The American Enlightenment: The American Revolution: The American Revolutionary War: Battles Of The American Revolutionary War In New York State: The Siege Of Fort Ticonderoga (1977): -- After a bombardment by British artillery under General John Burgoyne, American forces retreat from Fort Ticonderoga, New York. The 1777 Siege Of Fort Ticonderoga occurred between July 2nd and 6, 1777 at Fort Ticonderoga, near the southern end of Lake Champlain in the state of New York. Lieutenant General John Burgoyne's 8,000-man army occupied high ground above the fort, and nearly surrounded the defenses. These movements precipitated the occupying Continental Army, an under-strength force of 3,000 under the command of General Arthur St. Clair, to withdraw from Ticonderoga and the surrounding defenses. Some gunfire was exchanged, and there were some casualties, but there was no formal siege and no pitched battle. Burgoyne's army occupied Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence, the extensive fortifications on the Vermont side of the lake, without opposition on July 6. Advance units pursued the retreating Americans. The uncontested surrender of Ticonderoga caused an uproar in the American public and in its military circles, as Ticonderoga was widely believed to be virtually impregnable, and a vital point of defense. General St. Clair and his superior, General Philip Schuyler, were vilified by Congress. Both were eventually exonerated in courts martial, but their careers were adversely affected. Schuyler had already lost his command to Horatio Gates by the time of the court martial, and St. Clair held no more field commands for the remainder of the war.

July 6, 1962: #DOTD: #RIP: William Faulkner, American novelist, short story writer, screenwriter, poet, essayist and playwright, Nobel Prize laureate (b. September 25, 1897) #dies at Wright's Sanatorium in Byhalia, Mississippi at the age of 64 of a fatal attack caused by a thrombosis that resulted from a fall from his horse. Faulkner is buried with his family in St. Peter's Cemetery in Oxford, Mississippi. William Cuthbert Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi, and is primarily known for his novels and short stories set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, based on Lafayette County, Mississippi, where he spent most of his life. Faulkner is one of the most celebrated writers in American literature generally and Southern literature specifically. Though his work was published as early as 1919 and largely during the 1920s and 1930s, Faulkner's renown reached its peak upon the publication of Malcolm Cowley's The Portable Faulkner and his 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the only Mississippi-born Nobel winner. Two of his works, A Fable (1954) and his last novel The Reivers (1962), each won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked his 1929 novel The Sound and the Fury sixth on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century; also on the list were As I Lay Dying (1930) and Light in August (1932). Absalom, Absalom! (1936) appears on similar lists.

July 6, 2009: #DOTD: #RIP: Robert McNamara, American businessman and politician, 8th United States Secretary Of Defense (b. June 9, 1916) #dies at 5:30 am at his home in Washington, D.C. at the age of 93. He is buried at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, with the grave marker also commemorating his wives. McNamara's papers from his years as Secretary of Defense are housed in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, Massachusetts. Robert McNamara was born Robert Strange McNamara in San Francisco, California. He served as Secretary Of Defense from 1961 to 1968 under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He played a major role in escalating the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. McNamara was responsible for the institution of systems analysis in public policy, which developed into the discipline known today as policy analysis. He was born in San Francisco, California, graduated from UC Berkeley and Harvard Business School and served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. After the war, Henry Ford II hired McNamara and a group of other Army Air Force veterans to work for Ford Motor Company. These "Whiz Kids" helped reform Ford with modern planning, organization, and management control systems. After briefly serving as Ford's president, McNamara accepted appointment as Secretary Of Defense. On March 13, 1962, Lyman Lemnitzer, chairman of the Joint Chiefs Of Staff, delivered a proposal to Secretary Of Defense Robert McNamara called Operation Northwoods, involving false flag terrorist attacks using civilian airliners as missilesup against Guantanamo Bay Naval Base and buildings in the contintal United States (much like the 9/11 attacks) in order to blame those attacks on Fidel Castro. The proposal is scrapped and President John F. Kennedy removes Lemnitzer from his position. McNamara became a close adviser to Kennedy and advocated the use of a blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Kennedy and McNamara instituted a Cold War defense strategy of flexible response, which anticipated the need for military responses short of massive retaliation. McNamara consolidated intelligence and logistics functions of the Pentagon into two centralized agencies: the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Defense Supply Agency. During the Kennedy administration, McNamara presided over a build-up in U.S. soldiers in South Vietnam. After the 1964 Gulf Of Tonkin incident, the number of U.S. soldiers in Vietnam escalated dramatically. McNamara and other U.S. policymakers feared that the fall of South Vietnam to a Communist regime would lead to the fall of other governments in the region. McNamara grew increasingly skeptical of the efficacy of committing U.S. soldiers to Vietnam. In 1968, McNamara resigned as Secretary Of Defense to become President of the World Bank. He remains the longest serving Secretary Of Defense, having remained in office over seven years. He served as President of the World Bank until 1981, shifting the focus of the World Bank towards poverty reduction. After retiring, he served as a trustee of several organizations, including the California Institute of Technology and the Brookings Institution.
