June 24: The Feast Day Of St. John The Baptist: -- The Nativity Of John The Baptist (Birth Of John The Baptist, Nativity Of The Forerunner, Johnmas, St. John's Day (German: Johanni, Johannistag): -- International St. John's Day: -- Celebrated around the world, it is a celebration of the birth of St. John the Baptist. Specific verses in the 'Gospel of Luke' suggest that St. John the Baptist was born six months earlier than Jesus Christ. In the Christian Church, St. John is revered as the forerunner of Jesus Christ. He was a Jewish prophet who lived in the lower regions of the Jordan River, baptizing people in the river after they had confessed their sins. The traditional garb of prophets was St. John's austere camel-hair garment.

June 24: The Feast Day Of St. John The Baptist: -- The Nativity Of John The Baptist (Birth Of John The Baptist, Nativity Of The Forerunner, Johnmas, St. John's Day (German: Johanni, Johannistag): -- Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day: -- A holiday in the Canadian province of Quebec and celebrated by French Canadians worldwide, especially in Canada and the United States, that honors the traditional feast day of the Nativity - or birth - of St. John the Baptist. The religious nature of the holiday has been de-emphasized for civic events, and "la St-Jean" is now mainly a celebration of francophone culture and history filled with public events, parades, barbecues, picnics and fireworks. Bonne Saint-Jean-Baptiste!

June 24: The Feast Day Of St. John The Baptist: -- The Nativity Of John The Baptist (Birth Of John The Baptist, Nativity Of The Forerunner, Johnmas, St. John's Day (German: Johanni, Johannistag): -- St. John's Day (Fiesta De San Juan) (Venezuela): -- A predominantly Christian celebration in honor of Saint John the Baptist. Fiesta De San Juan is a day undoubtedly significant for anyone who reveres St. John. Those familiar with Christian theology know him as the man who announced the coming of Jesus. However, the occasion is also a party in Venezuela, and the carnival continues for three days. On these three exciting days, infectious African drum beats resonate across the Venezuelan coast, with people dressed to the nines waving colorful kerchiefs and dancing into the night. Fiesta De San Juan blends the sacred and profane, solemn and sensual - many diverse traditions in one memorable festival.

June 24: Inti Raymi (Festival Of The Sun) (Peru): -- An annual religious celebration held in honor of the Incan Sun God - Inti. Inti Raymi is a festival that celebrates the winter solstice and the Incan New Year. It is primarily held in Cusco. The celebration, which is perhaps the most important holiday for the Incan Empire, sees a variety of cultural activities taking place around the city to honor their Incan ancestry. The Inti Raymi was first established as a celebration by Incan Emperor Pachacuti, believed to be between 1412 and 1430, to commemorate the winter solstice - the day when the sun is farthest from the Earth - and to honor the ancestors of the past. The Incas last celebrated Inti Raymi as an independent empire in 1535, before the arrival of the Spanish. Today, the tradition of celebrating the festival is maintained by theatrical and cultural showcases that are charged with mysticism and spirituality. Celebrators typically hold dances and sing songs while making offerings to the Sun God, Inti. The main celebrations are held in the Peruvian city of Cusco. It involves a multi-act historical reconstruction ritual that involves residents costumed in traditional Incan garb descending onto Cusco's Temple of the Sun and the Plaza de Armas. Observers take up specific roles in the theatrical display. The final act of the ritual involves a four-hour prayer at the "Sacsayhuaman Fortress." The prayers are conveyed in the traditional Quechua language and a sacrifice is simulated for a shaman to predict the state of the coming future. During the Spanish Conquest, viceroy Francisco de Toledo outlawed Inti Raymi celebrations due to it being associated with primitivism, paganism, and contradictory to the Catholic faith. It was revived in 1944 with the help of Peruvian actor and writer Faustino Espinoza Navarro. Navarro's fascination with the tradition compelled him to promote it as an important national public holiday. Due to its proximity with St. John's Day, Inti Raymi has been celebrated in parallel with the Catholic holiday as well and also manages to attract thousands of tourists to Cusco every year. Despite the main festivities taking place in Cusco, it is not exclusive to the city as the indigenous Andean populations of South America regularly present offerings to the Sun God every June 24. This includes people living in Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Northern Argentina, and Colombia.

June 24: Farmer Day (Dia Del Campesino) (Peru): -- An annual tribute to the hardworking local farmers that provide food to the table of every Peruvian. Observers celebrate this day by holding agriculture fairs, cultural displays, and of course, the sharing of food. In the Amazonian region, Farmer Day is also celebrated in tandem with the Feast of San Juan Bautista - or St. John the Baptist Day - as a nod to the Catholic tradition that was instilled by Spanish missionaries. Farmer Day was first established in Peru in 1930 under the name Dia del Indio (Day of the Indian) by then-President Augusto B. Leguia, to honor Peru's Indigenous people as a whole. The day was renamed Dia del Campesino (Day of the Farmer) by dictator General Juan Velasco Alvarado in 1969. As a bonus, General Alvarado also enacted the Agrarian Reform Law, which helped diversify the country's land ownership and end forced Indigenous labor. Currently, agriculture in Peru only makes up around 13% of the country's gross domestic product. Yet almost a third of the population is employed in the agricultural sector. There are also currently 2.2 million small and medium-sized farms in the country. Peru's agricultural production is extremely diversified. The South American Andes region was one of the most prolific places for plant domestication throughout the Neolithic period. To fill their bountiful terrain, the ancient Andeans cultivated and employed about 120 different plant species - which was almost ten times more than other ancient civilizations such as China and Egypt. As a result, Peru and the neighboring Andean region are noted for their incredible agricultural diversity. It is, for example, one of the world's greatest producers of artichokes, as well as rice, bananas, grapes, sugarcane, maize, and cassava. Asparagus, avocado, blueberries, potatoes, pineapples, coffee, and cocoa are among the country's main agricultural exports. Peru's vital position in the global food supply system is highlighted by the diversity of its output. Thus, Dia del Campesino is important as it is a formal appreciation of Peruvian farmers and agricultural workers and their efforts to preserve the land's biodiversity and support the economy.

June 24: National Take Back The Lunch Break Day: -- Each year North American workers celebrate this day to promote worker happiness and productivity. There's been an increasing trend to take less frequent and shorter lunch breaks, affecting employee morale and well-being. According to Gallup, only one in three employees are engaging at work. Because engagement affects productivity, happiness and job satisfaction, employees and employers across North America need to step up to the plate - the lunch plate that is! According to a 2017 study commissioned by Tork, an Essity brand, employees who take lunch breaks are more likely to report being efficient at work and satisfied with their jobs. The survey reveals that nearly 90 percent of employees consider the ability to take a lunch break critical when accepting a new job. However, once they are on the job, the average lunch break is less than 30 minutes for more than half of North American workers - barely enough time to purchase a meal, let alone enjoy it. That is why Tork created National Take Back the Lunch Break Day to help improve workplace morale, satisfaction, and productivity across North America.

June 24: International Fairy Day: -- The idea behind the day is to appreciate and uplift the celebration of mythical creatures such as fairies and to use their tales to teach valuable lessons to the children. The concept of having a utopia where there are fairies and mythical creatures and that anything can happen drives the children to aim for the things that are considered impossible by the current systems, with the confidence that they can do it. So in demonstrating the belief that fairies exist, we celebrate International Fairy Day. Fairies are mythical creatures that are said to possess magical powers. Generally considered to be female, fairies have been a significant part of the Renaissance period in Europe. Having different origin stories from different parts of the world, there are different versions hailing from different places to describe the existence of fairies. Some call them the children of Eve, some call them fallen angels, and some consider them to be the sisters of elves (the devil has always been in the details). For us, fairies are magical beings known for their playful and mischievous nature. As far as the story of Peter Pan goes, legend has it that the first laugh of a baby broke into several pieces and became the source of the existence of fairies and demons. The joy and youth of a child is a matter of envy for the adults in whom every second person we notice has the desire to go back to his youth. Since fairies are a symbol of youth and joy, the desire to be a child again, to delve into the fairyland and fly casually with Peter Pan is a fantasy cherished by many. Today, when the majority of the folklore and fantasy storyline has been discarded by the ever-evolving technology and gadgets, our realist society still has close associations with fairies and demons. Baba Yaga may be forgotten, but the adventures of Peter Pan and Tinker Bell are still fresh in the minds of adults and children alike. To give these believers a day to remember, International Fairy Day has been kept alive since its beginning and is celebrated every year on June 24.

June 24 / July 2: World UFO Day: -- Commemorates two separate dates: the June 24 date recognizes the first widely reported UFO sighting in 1947 by aviator Kenneth Arnold, and the July 2 date commemorates the incident that took place the same year in Roswell, New Mexico. All around the world, unusual lights in the sky or strange occurrences keep humans always curious about otherworldly beings. Movies and television series keep our imaginations alive, as well. It's no surprise conspiracy theories are also prominent when it comes to UFOs. World UFO Day recognizes our curiosity about life from another dimension. Before 1947, written record of humans sighting unusual, but unexplained objects in the sky existed. However, after the Arnold and Roswell incidents, reports increased dramatically. As a result, the investigations of these unusual sightings drew ratings on a scale. Astronomer Josef Allen Hynek began studying the sightings and eventually wrote several books about his UFO research. In fact, Hynek would create The Hyneck Scale, which would rank sightings by proximity, from Nocturnal Lights to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. During the 20th century, the world's fascination with objects in the sky definitely increased. Before the 1947 sightings, H.G. Wells published a story that later became a radio play. Its broadcast across the airwaves had some frightening results! The War of the Worlds, published in 1898 and later broadcast by CBS radio in 1938 made many of the radio audience believe they were under attack by Martians. Narrated by Orson Welles, the drama stirred imaginations.

June 24, 1947: World UFO Day: Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs, Unidentified Anomalous Phenomenon, UAPs): UFO Incidents (Unidentified Flying Object Incidents): The Kenneth Arnold UFO Sighting (The Kenneth Arnold UFO Incident): -- Kenneth Arnold makes the first widely reported UFO sighting near Mount Rainier, Washington. Private pilot Kenneth Arnold claimed that he saw a string of nine, shiny unidentified flying objects flying past Mount Rainier at speeds that Arnold estimated at a minimum of 1,200 miles an hour (1,932 km/hr). This was the first post-War sighting in the United States that garnered nationwide news coverage and is credited with being the first of the modern era of UFO sightings, including numerous reported sightings over the next two to three weeks. Arnold's description of the objects also led to the press quickly coining the terms flying saucer and flying disc as popular descriptive terms for UFOs. It occured two weeks before the Roswell UFO Incident story broke.

June 24, 217 BC: The Punic Wars: The Second Punic War (The Hannibalic War): The Battle Of Lake Trasimene: -- The Romans, led by Gaius Flaminius, are ambushed and defeated by the Carthaginians, led by Hannibal, at the Battle of Lake Trasimene. The Battle of Lake Trasimene (24 June 217 BC, April on the Julian calendar) was a major battle in the Second Punic War. Hannibal's victory over the Roman army at Lake Trasimene remains, in terms of the number of men involved, the largest ambush in military history. News of the defeat caused a panic in Rome. Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus was elected dictator by the Roman Assembly and adopted the "Fabian strategy" of avoiding pitched conflict, relying instead on low-level harassment to wear the invader down, until Rome could rebuild its military strength. Hannibal was left largely free to ravage Apulia (the upper and lower "heel" of the boot of Italy) for the next year, until the Romans ended the dictatorship and elected Paullus and Varro as consuls. The end result would be the Battle of Cannae, the worst defeat the Romans would suffer throughout the Second Punic War, one of the greatest tactical feats in military history, one of the worst defeats in Roman history and one of the most influential battles in the tactics of the German military during both World Wars. In the prelude to the Battle of Lake Trasimene, Hannibal also achieved the earliest known example of a strategic turning movement, a military tactic in which an attacker's forces reach the rear of a defender's forces, separating the defenders from their principal defensive positions and threatening to place them in a pocket (isolation from friendly forces or their bases). According to Basil Liddell Hart, Hannibal, having won yet another in a string of brilliant victories against one of history's greatest armies, had successfully planned and executed "the greatest ambush in history." Dodge added, "It is the only instance in history of lying in ambush with the whole of a large army." Similarly, historian Robert L. O'Connell also writes, "[It was] the only time an entire large army was effectively swallowed and destroyed by such a maneuver."

June 24, 1374: Mania: Dance: Mass Mania: Dance Mania: Dancing Mania (Dancing Plague, Choreomania, St. John's Dance, Tarantism, St. Vitus' Dance): -- Queue "You Can't Sit Down" by The Dovells! A sudden outbreak of St. John's Dance causes people in the streets of Aachen, Germany, to experience hallucinations and begin to jump and twitch uncontrollably until they collapse from exhaustion. Such dancing Mania was a social phenomenon that occurred primarily in mainland Europe between the 14th and 17th centuries. It involved groups of people dancing erratically, sometimes thousands at a time. The mania affected men, women, and children who danced until they collapsed from exhaustion. One of the first major outbreaks was in Aachen, in the Holy Roman Empire, in 1374, and it quickly spread throughout Europe; one particularly notable outbreak occurred in Strasbourg in 1518, also in the Holy Roman Empire. Affecting thousands of people across several centuries, dancing mania was not an isolated event, and was well documented in contemporary reports. It was nevertheless poorly understood, and remedies were based on guesswork. Generally, musicians accompanied dancers, to help ward off the mania, but this tactic sometimes backfired by encouraging more to join in. There is no consensus among modern-day scholars as to the cause of dancing mania. The several theories proposed range from religious cults being behind the processions to people dancing to relieve themselves of stress and put the poverty of the period out of their minds. It is speculated to have been a mass hysteria, in which physical symptoms with no known physical cause are observed to affect a group of people, as a form of social influence.

June 24, 1572: The Spanish Colonization Of The Americas: Indigenous Rebellions In Mexico And Central America: The Spanish Conquest Of The Inca Empire (The Conquest Of Peru): The Neo-Inca State (The Neo-Inca State Of Vilcabamba): The Final Conquest Of The Neo-Inca State: -- The Spanish entered the city of Vilcabamba to find it deserted and the Sapa Inca gone; the city had been entirely destroyed, the Inca leader Tupac Amaru was later captured and executed by the Spanish, and the Inca, in their final form as The Neo-Inca State, also known as the Neo-Inca state of Vilcabamba, ceased to exist. The day prior, June 23, 1572. the Neo-Inca State fort of Huayna Pucara surrendered to Spanish artillery fire. The retreating Inca army opted to abandon their last city and head for the jungle to regroup. The attack on Huayna Pucara had begun three weeks prior, on June 1, 1572, when Francisco De Toledo, the fifth Viceroy of Peru who was known as The Viceroyal Solon, led the first engagement of the Spanish against the Neo-Inca State in the Vilcabamba valley near the Inca capital of Vilcabamba, Peru. The Neo-Inca State/Neo-Inca State Of Vilcabamba, was the Inca state established in 1537 at Vilcabamba as a rump state of the Inca Empire (1438-1533), which collapsed after the Spanish conquest in the mid-1530s. The Inca initially attacked the Spanish with high morale, despite being poorly equipped. Repeatedly, the Inca attempted to lift the siege held by the Spanish and their native allies but were forced to retreat.

June 24, 1779: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The American Enlightenment: The American Revolution: The American Revolutionary War: The Great Siege Of Gibraltar (June 24, 1779 - February 7, 1783): -- The Siege Of Gibraltar begins, the largest battle of The American Revolutionary War by number of combatants, and the longest siege endured by the British Armed Forces at three years, seven months and twelve days in duration. The Great Siege Of Gibraltar was a hard-fought but unsuccessful attempt by Spain and France to capture Gibraltar from the British during the American Revolutionary War. On June 16, 1779, Spain entered The American Revolutionary War as a co-belligerent on the side of both France and The United States in order to take back from the British their base at Gibraltar at the southern tip of the Spanish Iberian Peninsula on the Bay of Gibraltar. The vulnerable Gibraltar garrison under George Augustus Eliott was blockaded from June 1779 to February 1783, initially by the Spanish alone, led by Martin Alvarez de Sotomayor. The blockade proved to be a failure because two relief convoys entered unmolested -- the first under Admiral George Rodney in 1780 and the second under Admiral George Darby in 1781 -- despite the presence of the Spanish fleets. The same year, a major assault was planned by the Spanish, but the Gibraltar garrison sortied in November and destroyed much of the forward batteries. After the Spanish consistently failed to either defeat the garrison or prevent the arrival of relief efforts, the besiegers were reinforced by French forces under de Crillon, who took over command in early 1782. After a lull in the siege, during which the Franco-Spanish besiegers gathered more guns, ships, and troops, a "Grand Assault" was launched on September 13, 1782. This involved huge numbers -- 60,000 men, 49 ships of the line and 10 specially designed, newly invented floating batteries -- against the 5,000 defenders. The assault proved to be a disastrous and humiliating failure, resulting in heavy losses for the Bourbon attackers. This was the largest action fought during the war in terms of numbers. The final sign of defeat for the allies came when a crucial British relief convoy under Admiral Richard Howe slipped through the blockading fleet and arrived at the garrison in October 1782. The siege was finally lifted on February 7, 1783 and resulted in a decisive victory for the British. The siege was a factor in ending the American Revolutionary War - the Peace Of Paris negotiations were reliant on news from the siege, particularly at its climax.

Designed by the Montagnards, principally Maximilien Robespierre and Louis Saint-Just, it was intended to replace the outdated Constitution of 1791. With sweeping plans for democratization and wealth redistribution, the new document promised a significant departure from the relatively moderate goals of the Revolution in previous years. However, the Constitution's radical provisions were never implemented. The government placed a moratorium upon it, ostensibly because of the need to employ emergency war powers during the French Revolutionary War.

June 24, 1812: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The French Revolution: The French Revolutionary And Napoleonic Wars (The Great French War) (The French Revolutionary Wars, The Napoleonic Wars): The Napoleonic Wars: The French Invasion Of Russia (The Russian Campaign, The Patriotic War Of 1812): -- Napoleon's Grande Armee crosses the Neman river in an attempt to engage and defeat the Russian army, beginning the historic invasion of Russia. Known in Russia as the Patriotic War Of 1812 and in France as the Russian Campaign, it was a campaign by which Napoleon hoped to compel Tsar Alexander I of Russia to cease trading with British merchants through proxies in an effort to pressure the United Kingdom to sue for peace. The official political aim of the campaign was to liberate Poland from the threat of Russia. Napoleon named the campaign the Second Polish War to gain favor with the Poles and provide a political pretext for his actions. The Grande Armee was a very large force, numbering 680,000 soldiers (including 300,000 of French departments). It was the largest army ever assembled in the history of warfare up to that point. Through a series of long marches Napoleon pushed the army rapidly through Western Russia in an attempt to bring the Russian army to battle, winning a number of minor engagements and a major battle at Smolensk in August. Napoleon hoped the battle would win the war for him, but the Russian army slipped away and continued the retreat, leaving Smolensk to burn. French plans to quarter at Smolensk were abandoned, and Napoleon pressed his army on after the Russians. As the Russian army fell back, the Cossacks applied scorched-earth tactics, burning down villages, towns and crops and forcing the French to rely on a supply system that was incapable of feeding the large army in the field. The Russian army retreated into Russia for almost three months. In response to the loss of territory, the commander of the Russian army, Field Marshal Barclay, was replaced by Prince Mikhail Kutuzov on 29 August. On 7 September, the French caught up with the Russian army which had dug itself in on hillsides before a small town called Borodino, seventy miles west of Moscow. The battle that followed was the bloodiest single-day action of the Napoleonic Wars, with 72,000 casualties, and a narrow French victory. The Russian army withdrew the following day, leaving the French without the decisive victory Napoleon sought. A week later, Napoleon entered Moscow, which the Russians had abandoned and burned. The loss of Moscow did not compel Alexander I to sue for peace, and both sides were aware that Napoleon's position grew worse with each passing day. Napoleon stayed on in Moscow for a month, waiting for a peace offer that never came. On 19 October, Napoleon moved his army out southwest toward Kaluga, where Kutuzov was encamped with the Russian army. After an inconclusive battle at Maloyaroslavets, Napoleon continued the retreat. In the weeks that followed the Grande Armee starved and suffered from the onset of the Russian Winter. Lack of food and fodder for the horses, hypothermia from the bitter cold and persistent attacks upon isolated troops from Russian peasants and Cossacks led to great losses in men, and a general loss of discipline and cohesion in the army. More fighting at Vyazma and Krasnoi resulted in further losses for the French. When the remnants of Napoleon's main army crossed the Berezina River in late November, only 27,000 effective soldiers remained; the Grande Armee had lost some 380,000 men dead and 100,000 captured. Following the crossing of the Berezina, Napoleon left the army after much urging from his advisors and with the unanimous approval of his Marshals. He returned to Paris by carriage and sledge to protect his position as Emperor and to raise more forces to resist the advancing Russians. The campaign effectively ended on 14 December 1812, not quite six months from its outset, with the last French troops leaving Russian soil. The campaign was a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars. It was the greatest and bloodiest of the Napoleonic campaigns, involving more than 1.5 million soldiers, with over 500,000 French and 400,000 Russian casualties. The reputation of Napoleon was severely shaken, and French hegemony in Europe was dramatically weakened. The Grande Armee, made up of French and allied invasion forces, was reduced to a fraction of its initial strength. These events triggered a major shift in European politics. France's ally Prussia, soon followed by Austria, broke their imposed alliance with France and switched sides. This triggered the War Of The Sixth Coalition, sometimes known in Germany as the War of Liberation, a coalition of Austria, Prussia, Russia, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Sweden, Spain and a number of German states finally defeated France and drove Napoleon into exile on Elba.

June 24, 1850: #BOTD: #HBD! Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, British field marshal and politician, Secretary Of State for War, and Governor-General of Sudan, who won notoriety for his imperial campaigns, most especially his scorched earth policy against the Boers and his establishment of concentration camps during the Second Boer War (d. June 5, 1916) is #born Horatio Herbert Kitchener near Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland. Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, PC played a central role in the early part of the First World War. Kitchener was credited in 1898 for winning the Battle of Omdurman that helped him secure control of the Sudan for which he was made Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, becoming a qualifying peer and of mid-rank as an Earl. As Chief Of Staff (1900-02) in the Second Boer War he played a key role in Lord Roberts' conquest of the Boer Republics, then succeeded Roberts as commander-in-chief, by which time Boer forces had taken to guerrilla fighting and British forces imprisoned Boer civilians in concentration camps. His term as Commander-in-Chief (1902-09) of the Army in India saw him quarrel with another eminent proconsul, the Viceroy Lord Curzon, who eventually resigned. Kitchener then returned to Egypt as British Agent and Consul-General (de facto administrator). In 1914, at the start of the First World War, Kitchener became Secretary Of State for War, a Cabinet Minister. One of the few to foresee a long war, lasting for at least three years, and with the authority to act effectively on that perception, he organised the largest volunteer army that Britain had seen, and oversaw a significant expansion of materials production to fight on the Western Front. Despite having warned of the difficulty of provisioning for a long war, he was blamed for the shortage of shells in the spring of 1915 - one of the events leading to the formation of a coalition government - and stripped of his control over munitions and strategy. On 5 June 1916, Kitchener was making his way to Russia to attend negotiations, on HMS Hampshire, when it struck a German mine 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of the Orkney Islands, Scotland, and sank. Kitchener was among 737 who died. Kitchener was seen standing on the quarterdeck during the approximately twenty minutes that it took the ship to sink. His body was never recovered. The news of Kitchener's death was received with shock all over the British Empire. A man in Yorkshire committed suicide at the news; a sergeant on the Western Front was heard to exclaim "Now we've lost the war. Now we've lost the war"; and a nurse wrote home to her family that she knew Britain would win as long as Kitchener lived and now that he was gone: "How awful it is - a far worse blow than many German victories. So long as he was with us we knew even if things were gloomy that his guiding hand was at the helm." The King wrote in his diary: "It is indeed a heavy blow to me and a great loss to the nation and the allies.". He ordered army officers to wear black armbands for a week. Not everyone mourned Kitchener's loss. C. P. Scott, editor of The Manchester Guardian, is said to have remarked that "as for the old man, he could not have done better than to have gone down, as he was a great impediment lately.". His commanding image, appearing on Alfred Leete's "Lord Kitchener Wants You" recruiting posters, remains recognised and parodied in popular culture, and was the inspiration three year's later for James Montgomery Flagg's recruitment poster depicting Uncle Sam in place of Kitchener with the demand "I Want You For U.S. Army".

June 24, 1895: #BOTD: #HBD! Jack Dempsey, American boxer, soldier and cultural icon, nicknamed Kid Blackie and The Manassa Mauler, world heavyweight champion from 1919 to 1926, whose fights set financial and attendance records, including the first million-dollar gate, and pioneered the live broadcast of sporting events in general, and boxing matches in particular, and whose aggressive fighting style and exceptional punching power made him one of the most popular boxers in history (d. May 31, 1983) is #born William Harrison Dempsey in Manassa, Colorado. Dempsey competed as a professional boxer from 1914 to 1927, and ranked tenth on The Ring magazine's list of all-time heavyweights and seventh among its Top 100 Greatest Punchers, while in 1950 the Associated Press voted him as the greatest fighter of the past 50 years. He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, and was in the previous Boxing Hall of Fame. On September 22, 1927, Dempsey famously lost the "Long Count" boxing match to Gene Tunney. The Long Count Fight, also known as the Battle of the Long Count, was a professional boxing rematch between world heavyweight champion Gene Tunney and former champion Jack Dempsey. It took place on September 22, 1927, at Soldier Field in Chicago. "Long Count" is applied to the fight because when Tunney was down the count was delayed due to Dempsey's failure to go to and remain in a neutral corner. Whether this "long count" actually affected the outcome remains a subject of debate. Jack Dempsey died of heart failure at the age of 87 in New York City. His body is buried at Southampton Cemetery in Southampton, New York.

June 24, 1933: Grand Openings: Theatre Grand Openings (Theater Grand Openings): --The Apollo Theater opens on a Saturday night at 253 West 125th Street in central Harlem, New York City. The Apollo Theater was the most important venue in Black show business from the 1930s through the 1970s, when waning popularity caused it financial problems. The theater itself began its life in 1913 as Hurtig and Seamon's Music Hall, a venue frequented by white vaudeville acts that entertained predominantly white crowds until the 1930s. Sidney Cohen purchased the theater in 1933 and renamed it the Apollo, replacing the vaudeville fare with Black entertainment. The Apollo's first show in 1934, Jazz a la Carte, featured Benny Carter's big band and helped to solidify the theater's new role as the City's primarily African American performance venue, overshadowing the Lincoln and Lafayette theater. With live broadcasts that featured Duke Ellington and Count Basie orchestras, the Apollo became a mecca for jazz bands in the 1930s and 1940s. By the 1950s, the Apollo Theater was the nation's top stage for established black artists, and Apollo's famous Amateur Night, in which unknown performers had their talent assessed by the notoriously raucous Harlem audience, had become a springboard for numerous careers. Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Pearl Bailey, for example, were all early Amateur Night winners, and later acts like the Jackson 5 and Stevie Wonder also enjoyed their first major exposure at the Apollo. As musical styles changed, the theater evolved with the times, booking rhythm and blues, gospel, funk, soul, and hip-hop acts, and hosting landmark performances by artists like James Brown.

June 24, 1944: #BOTD: #HBD! Jeff Beck, English guitarist and songwriter, who rose to prominence as a member of the rock band the Yardbirds, and afterwards founded and fronted the Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice (d. January 10, 2023) is #born Geoffrey Arnold Beck at 206 Demesne Road, Wallington, Surrey (now in Greater London), England. In 1975, he switched to an instrumental style with focus on an innovative sound, and his releases spanned genres and styles ranging from blues rock, hard rock, jazz fusion and a blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Beck was ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone and other magazines' lists rankings of the greatest guitarists. He was often called a "guitarist's guitarist". Rolling Stone described him as "one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock". Although he recorded two successful albums (in 1975 and 1976) as a solo act, Beck did not establish or maintain commercial success like that of his contemporaries and bandmates. He recorded with many artists. Beck earned wide critical praise and received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance six times and Best Pop Instrumental Performance once. In 2014, he received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: first as a member of the Yardbirds (1992) and secondly as a solo artist (2009). Jeff Beck died of a bacterial meningitis infection at a hospital near Riverhall at the age of 78. Within minutes of his death announcement, musicians and friends began paying tribute; Jimmy Page wrote that "The six stringed Warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions. Jeff could channel music from the ethereal. His technique unique. His imaginations apparently limitless. Jeff I will miss you along with your millions of fans". Mick Jagger expressed his condolences, writing "With the death of Jeff Beck we have lost a wonderful man and one of the greatest guitar players in the world. We will all miss him so much." Ronnie Wood, a former bandmate of Beck's, stated "Now Jeff has gone, I feel like one of my band of brothers has left this world, and I'm going to dearly miss him." Beck's funeral took place at St Mary's Church in Beddington on February 3. He is buried at St. Mary's Church Cemetery in Shotley, Suffolk, England.

June 24, 1947: #BOTD: #HBD! Mick Fleetwood, English-American drummer and actor, best known as the drummer, co-founder, and de facto leader of the rock band Fleetwood Mac, is #born Michael John Kells Fleetwood in Redruth, Cornwall, England. Fleetwood, whose surname was merged with that of the group's bassist John "Mac" McVie to form the name of the band, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Fleetwood lived in Egypt and Norway for much of his childhood years as his father travelled with the Royal Air Force. Choosing to follow his musical interests, Fleetwood travelled to London at the age of 15, eventually combining with Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer and Bob Brunning, at Green's behest, to become the first incarnation of Fleetwood Mac. Fleetwood would remain the only member to stay with the band through its ever-changing line-up. After several album releases and line-up changes, the group moved to the United States in 1974 in an attempt to boost the band's success. Here Fleetwood invited Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to join. Buckingham and Nicks contributed to much of Fleetwood Mac's later commercial success, including the celebrated album Rumours, while Fleetwood's own determination to keep the band together was essential to the band's longevity. He has also enjoyed a solo career, published written works, and flirted briefly with acting and vinification, as well as opened blues-themed restaurants in Alexandria, Virginia and Hawaii.

June 24, 1948: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Eastern Bloc (The Communist Bloc, The Socialist Bloc, The Soviet Bloc): Allied-Occupied Germany: The History Of Berlin: The Berlin Blockade (The Berlin Airlift [German: Die Berliner Luftbrucke, "The Berlin Air Bridge"): -- The Soviet Union begins a blockade of Berlin, one of the first major international crises of the Cold War. During the multinational occupation of post-World War II Germany, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control. The Soviets offered to drop the blockade if the Western Allies withdrew the newly introduced Deutsche mark from West Berlin. Two days later the Western Allies responded with the Berlin Airlift, which lasted until 30 September 1949, to carry supplies to the people of West Berlin, a difficult feat given the size of the city's population. Aircrews from the United States Air Force, the British Royal Air Force, the French Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the South African Air Force flew over 200,000 flights in one year, providing to the West Berliners up to 8,893 tons of necessities each day, such as fuel and food. A plane landed in Berlin every minute from eleven Allied staging areas in West Germany. The Soviets did not disrupt the airlift for fear this might lead to open conflict. By the spring of 1949, the airlift was clearly succeeding, and by April it was delivering more cargo than had previously been transported into the city by rail. On 12 May 1949, the USSR lifted the blockade of West Berlin. During the Berlin Airlift, American and British planes flew about 278,000 flights, delivering 2.3 million tons of food, coal and medical supplies. The Berlin Blockade served to highlight the competing ideological and economic visions for postwar Europe.

June 24, 1949: Aesthetics: Performing Arts: Premieres: Television Premieres: United States Television Premieres: -- The first television western, Hopalong Cassidy, is aired on NBC starring William Boyd. It became so popular that the Mutual Broadcasting System began broadcasting a radio version, with Andy Clyde (later George MacMichael on Walter Brennan's ABC sitcom The Real McCoys) as the sidekick, in January 1950; at the end of September, the show moved to CBS Radio, where it ran until 1952. Hopalong Cassidy or Hop-along Cassidy is a fictional cowboy hero created in 1904 by the author Clarence E. Mulford, who wrote a series of popular short stories and many novels based on the character. In his early writings, Mulford portrayed the character as rude, dangerous, and rough-talking. He had a wooden leg which caused him to walk with a little "hop", hence the nickname. From 1935, the character-as played by movie actor William Boyd in films adapted from Mulford's books-was transformed into a clean-cut, sarsaparilla-drinking hero. Sixty-six popular films appeared, only a few of which were loosely based on Mulford's stories. Boyd thought Hopalong Cassidy might have a future in television, spent 350K USD to obtain the rights to his old films, and approached the fledgling NBC network. The initial broadcasts were so successful that NBC could not wait for a television series to be produced and edited the feature films to broadcast length. On June 24, 1949, Hopalong Cassidy became the first network Western television series. The success of the television series made Boyd a star. The series and character were so popular that Hopalong Cassidy was featured on the cover of national magazines such as Look, Life, and Time. Boyd earned millions as Hopalong (800K USD in 1950 alone), mostly from merchandise licensing and endorsement deals. In 1950, Hopalong Cassidy was featured on the first lunchbox to bear an image, causing sales of Aladdin Industries lunch boxes to jump from 50,000 units to 600,000 units per year. In stores, more than 100 companies in 1950 manufactured 70M USD of Hopalong Cassidy products, including children's dinnerware, pillows, roller skates, soap, wristwatches, and jackknives. There was a new demand for Hopalong Cassidy features in movie theaters, and Boyd licensed reissue distributor Film Classics to make new film prints and advertising accessories. Another 1950 enterprise saw the home-movie company Castle Films manufacturing condensed versions of the Paramount films for 16 mm and 8 mm film projectors; they were sold through 1966. Also, in January 1950 Dan Spiegel began to draw a syndicated comic strip with scripts by Royal King Cole; the strip lasted until 1955. Boyd began work on a separate series of half-hour westerns made for television; Edgar Buchanan was his new sidekick, Red Connors (a character from the original stories and a few of the early films). The theme music for the television show was written by Nacio Herb Brown (music) and L. Wolfe Gilbert (lyrics). The show ranked number 7 in the 1949 Nielsen ratings, number 9 in the 1950-1951 season and number 28 in 1951-1952. The success of the show and tie-ins inspired juvenile television westerns such as The Range Rider, Tales of the Texas Rangers, Annie Oakley, The Gene Autry Show, and The Roy Rogers Show.

June 24, 1968: Civil Rights Movements: The American Civil Rights Movement (1954-1968): The Protests Of 1968: Poverty: Poverty In The United States The Poor People's Campaign (The Poor People's March On Washington): -- The Poor People's Campaign ends the day after the demonstration's National Park Service permit expired on Sunday, June 23, 1968. Resurrection City, the temporary shantytown built on the National Mall to house the Poor People's Campaign demonstrators, was forcibly closed when over one thousand police officers arrived to clear the camp and its 500 remaining residents. Some had been led by Abernathy to another site in the Capitol for a pre-arranged arrest. In the camp, police still found some people singing and clapping who refused to leave the site. Police systematically searched the camp's shelters and arrested people inside and nearby the city.Police ultimately arrested 288 demonstrators including Abernathy. That afternoon, police reported being hit with rocks near 14th Street & U Street, an intersection central to April's riots following the King assassination. Broken windows and a fire bomb were also reported. One hundred police in riot gear responded with tear gas. The area was sealed off, a curfew was declared, and Mayor Washington declared a state of emergency. 450 National Guardsman began patrolling the streets that night, and few incidents were reported (one man leaving a liquor store was wounded by a police officer's bullet). Unrest within Resurrection City began four days prior. On Thursday, June 20, after members of the Milwaukee NAACP reportedly provoked police by throwing rocks at them, the police fired several canisters of tear gas into the city. Life in the camp had become extremely chaotic. There were reports of vandalism from escaped mental patients. A number of people were hospitalized but none were seriously injured. On Sunday, June 23, a white visitor to the camp was beaten, shot in the knee, and robbed. Abernathy, on the other hand, accused police of provoking "all the violence" through "paid infiltrators" and with the use of tear gas canisters and Molotov cocktails, and called for an investigation into "mass police brutality against the people of Resurrection City." Once the demonstration's National Park Service permit expired on Sunday, June 23, 1968, some members of the House of Representatives called for its immediate removal. Thus was the inglorious and controversial end of The Poor People's Campaign, also known as The Poor People's March On Washington, an effort to gain economic justice for poor people in the United States. It was organized by Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and carried out under the leadership of Ralph Abernathy in the wake of King's assassination in April 1968. The campaign demanded economic and human rights for poor Americans of diverse backgrounds. After presenting an organized set of demands to Congress and executive agencies, participants set up a 3,000-person protest camp on the Washington Mall, where they stayed for six weeks. The Poor People's Campaign was motivated by a desire for economic justice: the idea that all people should have what they need to live. King and the SCLC shifted their focus to these issues after observing that gains in civil rights had not improved the material conditions of life for many African Americans. The Poor People's Campaign was a multiracial effort - including African Americans, European Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans - aimed at alleviating poverty regardless of race. According to political historians such as Barbara Cruikshank, "the poor" did not particularly conceive of themselves as a unified group until President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty (declared in 1964) identified them as such.

Jiang Zemin, Chinese engineer and politician, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of China from 1989 to 2002, 5th President of China from 1993 to 2003 was born on August 17, 1926. Jiang has been described as the "core of the third generation" of Communist Party leaders since 1989. Jiang came to power unexpectedly as a compromise candidate following the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, when he replaced Zhao Ziyang as General Secretary after Zhao was ousted for his support for the student movement. With the waning influence of Eight Elders due to old age and with the death of Deng Xiaoping in 1997, Jiang consolidated his hold on power and became the "paramount leader" of the party and the country in the 1990s. Urged by Deng's Southern Tour in 1992 to accelerate "opening up and reform", Jiang officially introduced the term "socialist market economy" in his speech during the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of China held later that year, ending a period of ideological uncertainty and economic stagnation following 1989. Under Jiang's leadership, China experienced substantial economic growth with the continuation of reforms, saw the peaceful return of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom in 1997 and Macau from Portugal in 1999 and improved its relations with the outside world while the Communist Party maintained its tight control over the government. His contributions to party doctrine, known as the "Three Represents," were written into the party's constitution in 2002. Jiang vacated the post of party General Secretary and Politburo Standing Committee in 2002, but did not relinquish all of his leadership titles until 2005, and continued to influence affairs until much later. Jiang is the longest-living paramount leader in the history of the PRC, surpassing Deng Xiaoping on February 14, 2019.

June 24, 1987: #DOTD: #RIP: Jackie Gleason, American comedian, actor, writer, composer and conductor (b. February 26, 1916) #dies at age 71 in his Lauderhill, Florida home of colon cancer, which had metastasized to his liver, diagnosed during production of his final film, the Tom Hanks comedy-drama Nothing in Common (1986). He was also suffering from phlebitis and diabetes. He kept his medical problems private, although there were rumors that he was seriously ill. After a funeral Mass at the Cathedral Of Saint Mary in Miami, Florida, Gleason was entombed in a sarcophagus with the inscription "And Away We Go" in a private outdoor mausoleum at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery. Gleason's sister-in-law June Taylor is buried to the left of the mausoleum, next to her husband and attorney, Sol Lerner. Jackie Gleason was born Herbert Walton Gleason Jr. at 364 Chauncey Street in the Stuyvesant Heights (now Bedford-Stuyvesant) section of Brooklyn. He was baptized John Herbert Gleason[ and grew up at 328 Chauncey Street, Apartment 1A, an address he later used for Ralph and Alice Kramden on The Honeymooners). Developing a style and characters from growing up in Brooklyn, New York, he was known for his brash visual and verbal comedy, exemplified by his bus driver Ralph Kramden character in the television series The Honeymooners. By filming the episodes with Electronicams, a television recording system that shot an image on film and television at the same time through a common lens, Gleason was later able to release the series in syndication, which increased its popularity over the years with new audiences. He also developed The Jackie Gleason Show, which maintained high ratings from the mid-1950s through 1970. After originating in New York City, filming moved to Miami, Florida, in 1964 after Gleason took up permanent residence there. Among his notable film roles were Minnesota Fats in the 1961 Academy Award-winning drama The Hustler (co-starring with Paul Newman), and Buford T. Justice in the Smokey and the Bandit series from 1977 into the early 1980s (co-starring Burt Reynolds). Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Gleason enjoyed a prominent secondary music career, producing a series of best-selling "mood music" albums. His first album, Music for Lovers Only, still holds the record for the longest stay on the Billboard Top Ten Charts (153 weeks), and his first 10 albums sold over a million copies each. To date his output spans some 20-plus singles, nearly 60 long-playing record albums, and over 40 CDs. Gleason was greatly interested in the paranormal, buying and reading numerous books on the topic, as well as on parapsychology and UFOs. During the 1950s he was a semi-regular guest on a paranormal-themed overnight radio show hosted by John Nebel, and wrote the introduction to Donald Bain's biography of Nebel. After his death, his large book collection was donated to the library of the University of Miami. A complete listing of the holdings of Gleason's library has been issued by the online cataloging service LibraryThing. According to writer Larry Holcombe, Gleason's known interest in UFOs allegedly prompted President Richard Nixon to share some information with him and to disclose some UFO data publicly. According to a story Gleason's second wife, Beverly McKittrick Gleason, gave to the National Enquirer, Nixon allegedly took Gleason to Homestead Air Force Base, Florida to see preserved alien bodies during the evening of February 19, 1973. In an interview with Gleason's second wife, Beverly McKittrick, by Esquire Magazine about a book she was planning to write, she revealed that Gleason had told her that Nixon had shown Gleason alien bodies. The story goes that Gleason arrived home unusually late on the evening of February 19, 1973. Worried, McKittrick questioned his whereabouts. She said in the interview that his face looked "haggard", and that he said he had been to Homestead Air Force Base and had seen alien bodies. He described them as small, "only about two feet tall, with bald heads and disproportionately large ears." Gleason told her that he could not get many answers, but that a spacecraft must have crashed nearby. She says that he was so preoccupied about the event that he continued to talk about it the next morning. In a July 9, 2003 interview with Kenny Young, she reaffirmed her story. Gleason was reputed to have the world's largest private UFO book collection, and he had his Peekskill, N.Y. home built in the shape of a flying saucer.

June 24, 1986: #DOTD: #RIP: Jesse Marcel, Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force who helped administer Operation Crossroads, the 1946 atom bomb tests at the Bikini Atoll, best known as the first military officer tasked with investigating the 1947 Roswell Incident and its associate "flying disc" debris, which continued research supports the findings that the Roswell debris he investigated was of (E)xtraterrestrial (B)iological (En)tity (USAF classifiction: "EBen") origin (b. May 27, 1907) #dies in Houma, Louisiana, at the age of 79. He is buried at Matherne Cemetery in Houma. Jesse Marcel was born Jesse Antoine Marcel Sr. in Bayou Blue, Louisiana. Operation Crossroads was a pair of nuclear weapon tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll in mid-1946. They were the first nuclear weapon tests since Trinity in July 1945, and the first detonations of nuclear devices since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The purpose of the tests was to investigate the effect of nuclear weapons on warships. There were only seven nuclear bombs in existence in July 1946. The tests, called Able and Baker, both used Fat Man plutonium implosion-type nuclear weapons of the kind dropped on Nagasaki. The Able bomb was stenciled with the name "Gilda" and decorated with an Esquire magazine photograph of Rita Hayworth, star of the 1946 movie, Gilda. The Baker bomb was nicknamed "Helen of Bikini". In mid-1946, Marcel was attached to the 509th Composite Group to prepare for and participate in Operation Crossroads. On July 26, 1946, Brigadier General Roger M. Ramey authored a letter of commendation complimenting Marcel's performance during Operation Crossroads. The following month, Marcel received an additional letter of commendation from Major General W. E. Kepner for his performance in the operation. Marcel was the first military officer tasked with investigating a balloon crash near Roswell, New Mexico-an event that occurred amid the flying saucer craze of 1947, and which would subsequently become known as The Roswell incident. On June 26, media nationwide had reported civilian pilot Kenneth Arnold's story of seeing what became known as "flying saucers". Historians would later chronicle over 800 similar sightings reported after the Arnold story. On Monday, July 7, Roswell Army Air Field was contacted by Sheriff George Wilcox, who reported that a local rancher had recovered a crashed "flying disc". Marcel and Lieutenant Colonel Sheridan Cavitt met with rancher Mac Brazel and followed him back to the ranch outside Corona. With Marcel in a jeep while Brazel and Cavitt rode horses, the trio visited the debris field where they loaded debris into the vehicle. Upon his return to base, Marcel reported the recovery to base commander William H. Blanchard. Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release announcing the recovery of a 'flying disc' and naming Marcel as the responsible officer. The debris was loaded onto a plane, and Marcel accompanied it from Roswell to Fort Worth. After his arrival, Marcel participated in a press conference in Texas. There, debris that Marcel and others admitted was not in any way part of the wreckage they recovered, was identified as pieces of a weather balloon kite. Marcel was quoted as saying at that time, under extreme pressue from his superiors, "[We] spent a couple of hours Monday afternoon [July 7] looking for any more parts of the weather device, [and] we found a few more patches of tinfoil and rubber." The event at Roswell was largely forgotten until 1978. That year, the National Enquirer reprinted the original article from July 8, 1947. In February 1978, Marcel, then a retired lieutenant colonel, was interviewed by ufologist Stanton Friedman. In that interview, Marcel said he believed the Roswell debris was extraterrestrial. On December 19, 1979, Marcel was interviewed by Bob Pratt of the National Enquirer, and on February 28, 1980, the tabloid brought large-scale attention to the Marcel story. On September 20, 1980, the TV series In Search of... aired an interview where Marcel described his participation in the 1947 press conference: "They wanted some comments from me, but I wasn't at liberty to do that. So, all I could do is keep my mouth shut. And General Ramey is the one who discussed - told the newspapers, I mean the newsmen, what it was, and to forget about it. It is nothing more than a weather observation balloon. Of course, we both knew differently." Marcel's son, Jesse A. Marcel Jr., spent 35 years stating that in 1947, when he was 10 years old, his father had shown him alien debris recovered from the Roswell crash site, including "a small beam with purple-hued hieroglyphics on it". A 1994 Air Force report, produced in response to a Congressional inquiry into the Roswell Incident, continued to cover-up the facts by stating that the material recovered by Marcel was likely debris from Project Mogul, a "then-sensitive, classified project, whose purpose was to determine the state of Soviet nuclear weapons research" using high-altitude balloons. During June and July 1947, Mogul balloons had been test-launched at Alamogordo Army Air Field (now Holloman AFB) and White Sands Missile Range. In late 1947, Marcel received a promotion to the rank of lieutenant colonel - a promotion that would have been impossible if his involvement in The Roswell Incident was found to have been flawed by his superiors. Marcel remained with the 509th at Walker AFB until August 16, 1948, when he was transferred to Strategic Air Command at Andrews AFB. When SAC HQ transferred to Offutt AFB in Nebraska on November 9, 1948, Marcel transferred with it. After requesting a hardship discharge to care for his elderly mother, in July 1950, Marcel returned to Houma, Louisiana. In September 1950, Marcel was released from active duty and transferred to the Air Force reserves. He received his final discharge in 1958. In his final years, Marcel was a self-employed television repairman.

June 24, 1604: #DOTD: #RIP: Edward de Vere, 17th Earl Of Oxford, English peer and courtier of the Elizabethan era, Lord Great Chamberlain, the most popular alternative candidate proposed for the authorship of the works of William Shakespeare (b. April 12, 1550) #dies of unknown causes at King's Place, Hackney in inner London England, on the 347th anniversary of the probable birthdate of his ancestor and predecessor Robert de Vere, 6th Earl of Oxford. De Vere's death passed with a disgraceful lack of public or private notice. He was originally buried on either July 4 or July 6, in the Hackney churchyard of St Augustine's (now the parish of St. John-at-Hackney). That grave was still unmarked on November 25, 1612 when his widow Elizabeth Trentham signed her own will eight years later. She asked "to be buried in the Church of Hackney within the Countie of Middlesex, as neare vnto the bodie of my said late deare and noble lorde and husband as may bee," and she requested that "there bee in the said Church erected for vs a tombe fittinge our degree." The 18th Earl of Oxford ostensibly failed to fulfil this request, as the location of his parents' graves there was suposed to be lost to time. However, the absence of a grave marker led to questions regarding his burial place, and an unpublished manuscript written fifteen years after Edward's death by Edward's first cousin, Percival Golding (1579-1635) documents that, fittingly for a great British writer, he was in fact secretly reinterred at Westminster Abbey sometime between 1612 and 1619. Documentary records, including the Hackney registers and the will of de Vere's widow, do confirm that he was originally buried in the church of St Augustine on July 4, 1604. One register lists "Edward Veare earl of Oxford" among burials; the other reads, "Edward deVeare Erle of Oxenford was buryed the 6th daye of Iulye Anno 1604." However, a c. 1619 manuscript history of the Vere family written by the aforementioned Edward's first cousin, Percival Golding, states "He was a man in minde and body absolutely accomplished with honourable endowments. He died at his house at Hackney in the moneth of June Ao 1604 and lieth buryed at Westminster." The same manuscript further avers that de Vere, despite his lack of publicly acknowledged governmental responsibilities in later life, in fact obtained an honorary stewardship of the Privy Council in the last year of his life. This assertion is documented by the appearance of de Vere's signature on a letter dated April 8, 1603 from the Privy Council to the Lord High Treasurer of England. Edward de Vere, 17th Earl Of Oxford was heir to the second oldest earldom in the kingdom, a court favourite for a time, a sought-after patron of the arts, and noted by his contemporaries as a lyric poet and court playwright. His reckless and volatile temperament precluded him from attaining any publicly acknowledged courtly or governmental responsibility, and was supposed to have contributed to the dissipation of his estate. Edward de Vere was born heir to the second-oldest extant earldom in England at the de Vere ancestral home, Hedingham Castle, in Essex, northeast of London. De Vere was the only son of John de Vere, 16th Earl of Oxford, and Margery Golding. After the death of his father in 1562, he became a ward of Queen Elizabeth and was sent to live in the household of her principal advisor, Sir William Cecil. He married Cecil's daughter, Anne, with whom he had five children. De Vere was estranged from her for five years after he refused to acknowledge her first child as his. De Vere was a champion jouster and travelled widely throughout Italy and France. He was among the first to compose love poetry at the Elizabethan court, and he was praised as a playwright, and though the authorship of the collected works of William Shakespeare are according to the Oxfordian Theory of Shakespeare authorship properly credited to him, none of the plays attributed to de Vere by name are known to survive. A stream of dedications praised de Vere for his generous patronage of literary, religious, musical, and medical works, and he patronised both adult and boy acting companies, as well as musicians, tumblers, acrobats and performing animals. He fell out of favour with the Queen in the early 1580s and was exiled from court after impregnating one of her maids of honour, Anne Vavasour, which instigated violent street brawls between de Vere's retainers and her uncles. De Vere was reconciled to the Queen in 1583, but all opportunities for advancement had been lost. In 1586, the Queen granted de Vere a 1,000 pound sterling annuity to relieve his financial distress caused by his extravagance and selling off his income-producing lands for ready money. After his wife's death, he married Elizabeth Trentham, one of the Queen's maids of honour, with whom he had an heir, Henry de Vere. He died in 1604, having spent the entirety of his inherited estates.

June 24, 2018: #DOTD: #RIP: Dan Ingram, American Top 40 radio disc jockey with a fifty-year career on radio stations such as WABC and WCBS-FM in New York (b. September 7, 1934) #dies in Fort Lauderdale, Florida aged 83 of choking on a piece of steak (one of his favorite foods). His burial details are not publicly disclosed. He was born Daniel Trombley Ingram in Oceanside, New York. He started broadcasting at WHCH Hofstra College, Hempstead, New York, WNRC, New Rochelle, New York, and WALK-FM, Patchogue, New York. Ingram was one of the most highly regarded DJs from his era. He was noted for his quick wit and ability to convey a humorous or satiric idea with quick pacing and an economy of words-a skill which made him uniquely suited to, and successful within, personality-driven music radio of the ear. He is among the most frequently emulated radio personalities, cited as an influence or inspiration by numerous current broadcasters. One of Ingram's unique skills was his ability to "talk up" to the lyrics of a record, meaning speaking over the musical introduction and finishing exactly at the point when the lyrics started. Dan was well known for playing doctored versions of popular songs. The Paul McCartney and Wings song My Love Does it Good became My Glove Does it Good. The stuttering title refrain of Bennie and the Jets went from three or four repetitions to countless. In the same vein, the distinctive refrain added to Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede, Ooga-chucka-ooga-ooga would start repeating and listeners would never know when it would end. (Other examples include Paul Simon's 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover which he called "50 Ways to Love Your Leaver", and "rearranging" the spelling of "S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y" on the Bay City Rollers' Saturday Night.) Dan's longtime closing theme song was "Tri-Fi Drums" by Billy May. An edited version of the song was used for broadcast. TV commercials Dan narrated include a 1970 promo for free cut-out records of Archies songs on the backs of Post Honeycomb and Alpha-Bits cereals. Dan is not related to Clarke Ingram, another top 40 radio personality in New York City who worked at Z-100 during the early 1990s. Clarke has said that he was reluctant to use "Ingram" (his real name) because of Dan's prominence, but that Z-100 encouraged him to do so because at the time Dan was not on the air at any station. About six months later, Dan returned to the air, doing weekends at WCBS-FM, and the two occasionally competed in the same time slots. Some listeners mistakenly assumed that Clarke was Dan's son, or another relative. (A photo of Dan and Clarke meeting each other for the first time appeared in the radio trade publication FMQB in 1997.) However, Dan's son, Chris, was a DJ at WVOS-FM in Monticello, NY and most recently at WRMF in West Palm Beach, Florida. Dan is also featured prominently in his son, Chris' book, "Hey Kemosabe! The Days (and Nights) of a Radio Idyll," a fictionalzed account of the Musicradio WABC era. Dan commented occasionally about the pronunciation of his name: jingles often are heard pronouncing his last name as "Ing-ram," but Dan has said it is correctly pronounced "In-gram." As a tribute to Dan in later years, ESPN's Chris Berman would do the same when saying the name of New York Giants wide receiver Mark Ingram, pronouncing it "Marrrrrk In-gram". Dan was interviewed about his career by Mark Simone on WABC Post-Rewound show on May 29, 2006. While discussing a lawsuit filed against him by another person who used his name, he said "shit". While the dump button managed to erase that profanity from the air, his second profanity ("fuck") accidentally went on the air due to a delay problem. With his best friend, Ron Lundy, he hosted "The Last Show", the last broadcast of WABC' Top 40 MusicRadio format, before WABC' format conversion from music to talk radio, at noon on May 10, 1982.

June 24, 1797: Spirituality: Fraternal Organizations: Freemasonry (Masonry): Freemasonry In The United States: African-American Fraternal Orders: Prince Hall Freemasonry: Prince Hall Speaks To The African Lodge, Cambridge, Massachusetts: -- Five years after his presentation at Charles Town, Prince Hall again addresses his fellow Masons. In an address delivered to the African Lodge at West Cambridge, Massachusetts on June 24, 1797, Hall challenges those Masons to work for the elimination of slavery and the establishment of full civil rights for African Americans while identifying with the common humanity and desire of all Americans for liberty. Prince Hall (c. 1735/1738 - 1807) was an abolitionist and leader in the free black community in Boston. He founded Prince Hall Freemasonry and lobbied for education rights for African American children. He was also active in the back-to-Africa movement. Hall tried to gain a place for New York's enslaved and free blacks in Freemasonry, education, and the military, which were some of the most crucial spheres of society in his time. Hall is considered the founder of "Black Freemasonry" in the United States, known today as Prince Hall Freemasonry. Hall formed the African Grand Lodge of North America. Prince Hall was unanimously elected its Grand Master and served until his death in 1807. Steve Gladstone, author of Freedom Trail Boston, states that Prince Hall-known for his role in creating Black Freemasonry, championing equal education rights, and fighting slavery-"was one of the most influential free black leaders in the late 1700s". There is confusion about his year of birth, place of birth, parents, and marriages-at least partly due to the fact that there were numerous "Prince Halls" during this time period.

May 1, 1915) #dies of a heart attack in Fairfax, California aged 78. His burial place is unknown. Archie Williams was born Archie Franklin Williams in Oakland, California (as recorded on his birth certificate, his name is Archie and not Archibald). Williams, along with Jesse Owens, defeated German athletes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and helped debunk Adolf Hitler's theory of Aryan racial superiority. After the Olympics, he said "When I came home, somebody asked me, 'How did those dirty Nazis treat you?' I replied that I didn't see any dirty Nazis, just a lot of nice German people. And I didn't have to ride in the back of the bus over there." He went on to earn a mechanical engineering degree from the University of California-Berkeley and was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the oldest intercollegiate historically African American fraternity in the United Staes, he but faced discrimination and wound up digging ditches. He later became an airplane pilot and trained Tuskegee Institute pilots including the black air corp of World War II.

June 23-24, 79: #DOTD: #RIP: Vespasian (Latin: Vespasianus), Roman Emperor, renown for his military success and for initiating construction of The Colosseum (b. November 17, 9 AD) #dies of acute diarrhea on a visit to the Aquae Cutiliae, a mineral spring in Italy near the modern Cittaducale, central Italy, aged 69. He was buried at The Mausoleum Of Augustus, Rome, Italy. Vespasian was born Titus Flavius Vespasianus in a village north-east of Rome called Falacrinae. His family was relatively undistinguished and lacking in pedigree. Vespasian was Roman emperor from 69 to 79. The fourth and last in the Year of the Four Emperors, he founded the Flavian dynasty that ruled the Empire for 27 years. Vespasian was the first emperor from an equestrian family and only rose into the senatorial rank as the first member of his family later in his lifetime. He was legate (Latin: legatus, a high-ranking Roman military officer in the Roman Army equivalent to general) of Legio II Augusta (Latin: Second Legion Augustus") during the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 AD, and he subjugated Judaea during the Jewish Rebellion of 66 AD. While Vespasian besieged Jerusalem during the Jewish rebellion, emperor Nero committed suicide and plunged Rome into a year of civil war known as the Year of the Four Emperors. After Galba and Otho perished in quick succession, Vitellius became emperor in April 69. The Roman legions of Roman Egypt and Judaea reacted by declaring Vespasian, their commander, the emperor on July 1, 69. In his bid for imperial power, Vespasian joined forces with Mucianus, the governor of Syria, and Primus, a general in Pannonia, leaving his son Titus to command the besieging forces at Jerusalem. Primus and Mucianus led the Flavian forces against Vitellius, while Vespasian took control of Egypt. On December 20, 69, Vitellius was defeated, and the following day Vespasian was declared emperor by the Senate. Little information survives about the government during Vespasian's ten-year rule. He reformed the financial system of Rome after the campaign against Judaea ended successfully, and initiated several ambitious construction projects, including the building of the Flavian Amphitheatre, better known today as the Roman Colosseum. Through his general Agricola, Vespasian increased imperial expansion in Britain. Vespasian is often credited with restoring political stability to Rome following the chaotic reigns of his predecessors. After he died in 79, he was succeeded by his eldest son Titus, thus becoming the first Roman emperor to be succeeded by his natural son and establishing the Flavian dynasty.

June 24, 79: Rome: Ancient Rome: The Roman Empire: Royal Accessions: Successions To The Throne Of The Roman Empire: -- Titus, Roman Emperor, best known as a soldier as the victor of The Siege Of Jersusalem, and best known as Emperor for completing The Colosseum (also known as The Coliseum), becomes Emperor upon the death of his father, Roman Emperor Vespasian. Titus Caesar Vespasianus (December 30, 39 - September 13, 81 AD) was Roman emperor from 79 to 81. A member of the Flavian dynasty, Titus succeeded his father Vespasian upon his death. Before becoming emperor, Titus gained renown as a military commander, serving under his father in Judea during the First Jewish-Roman War. The campaign came to a brief halt with the death of emperor Nero in 68, launching Vespasian's bid for the imperial power during the Year of the Four Emperors. When Vespasian was declared Emperor on 1 July 69, Titus was left in charge of ending the Jewish rebellion. In 70, he besieged and captured Jerusalem, and destroyed the city and the Second Temple. For this achievement Titus was awarded a triumph; the Arch of Titus commemorates his victory to this day. During his father's rule, Titus gained notoriety in Rome serving as prefect of the Praetorian Guard, and for carrying on a controversial relationship with the Jewish queen Berenice. Despite concerns over his character, Titus ruled to great acclaim following the death of Vespasian in 79, and was considered a good emperor by Suetonius and other contemporary historians. As emperor, Titus is best known for completing the Colosseum and for his generosity in relieving the suffering caused by two disasters, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and a fire in Rome in 80. After barely two years in office, Titus died of a fever on September 13, 81. He was deified by the Roman Senate and succeeded by his younger brother Domitian.

June 24, 1908: #DOTD: #RIP: Grover Cleveland, American lawyer and politician who served as the 22nd and 24th president of the United States from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897 (b. March 18, 1837) #dies of a heart attack at age 71 in his Princeton residence. His last words were, "I have tried so hard to do right." He is buried in the Princeton Cemetery of the Nassau Presbyterian Church. He was born Stephen Grover Cleveland in Caldwell, New Jersey. He is the only American president to serve two nonconsecutive terms, and the only president to be married in the White House. He won the popular vote for three presidential elections-in 1884, 1888, and 1892-and was one of two Democrats (followed by Woodrow Wilson in 1912) to be elected president during the era of Republican presidential domination dating from 1861 to 1933. In 1881, Cleveland was elected mayor of Buffalo and later, governor of New York. He was the leader of the pro-business Bourbon Democrats who opposed high tariffs, Free Silver, inflation, imperialism, and subsidies to business, farmers, or veterans. His crusade for political reform and fiscal conservatism made him an icon for American conservatives of the era. Cleveland won praise for his honesty, self-reliance, integrity, and commitment to the principles of classical liberalism. He fought political corruption, patronage, and bossism. As a reformer, Cleveland had such prestige that the like-minded wing of the Republican Party, called "Mugwumps", largely bolted the GOP presidential ticket and swung to his support in the 1884 election. As his second administration began, disaster hit the nation when the Panic Of 1893 produced a severe national depression. It ruined his Democratic Party, opening the way for a Republican landslide in 1894 and for the agrarian and silverite seizure of the Democratic Party in 1896. The result was a political realignment that ended the Third Party System and launched the Fourth Party System and the Progressive Era. Cleveland was a formidable policymaker, and he also drew corresponding criticism. His intervention in the Pullman Strike of 1894 to keep the railroads moving angered labor unions nationwide in addition to the party in Illinois; his support of the gold standard and opposition to Free Silver alienated the agrarian wing of the Democratic Party. Critics complained that Cleveland had little imagination and seemed overwhelmed by the nation's economic disasters-depressions and strikes-in his second term. Even so, his reputation for probity and good character survived the troubles of his second term. Biographer Allan Nevins wrote, "[I]n Grover Cleveland, the greatness lies in typical rather than unusual qualities. He had no endowments that thousands of men do not have. He possessed honesty, courage, firmness, independence, and common sense. But he possessed them to a degree other men do not." By the end of his second term, public perception showed him to be one of the most unpopular U.S. presidents, and he was by then rejected even by most Democrats. Today, Cleveland is considered by most historians to have been a successful leader, and has been praised for honesty, integrity, adherence to his morals and defying party boundaries, and effective leadership.

June 24, 1997: #DOTD: #RIP: Brian Keith, American film, television and stage actor (b. November 14, 1921) #dies of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Malibu, California, aged 75. He suffered from emphysema and lung cancer during the latter part of his life, despite having quit smoking ten years earlier. He reportedly also struggled with financial problems, and suffered from depression throughout his final days. Maureen O'Hara stated in an interview not long after Keith died that she believed he did not commit suicide. She stated that he had a large gun collection, and enjoyed cleaning them and showing them to people. She believed he might have been cleaning the gun or looking at it when it went off, and that his death was an accident and definitely not a suicide. She had just visited him and said he was in good spirits. She also stated that he would not have committed suicide given his Catholic beliefs. Keith's death occurred two months after the death of his daughter Daisy, who herself died by suicide. Keith's family was joined by many mourners at a private funeral, including Family Affair co-stars Kathy Garver and Johnny Whitaker, and Hardcastle and McCormick co-star Daniel Hugh Kelly. Keith's ashes are interred next to those of his daughter Daisy at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. He was born Robert Alba Keith in Bayonne, New Jersey. Brian Keith's six-decade-long career gained recognition for his work in movies such as the Disney family film The Parent Trap (1961), the comedy The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966), and the adventure saga The Wind and the Lion (1975), in which he portrayed President Theodore Roosevelt. On television two of his best-known roles were those of bachelor-uncle-turned-reluctant-parent Bill Davis in the 1960s sitcom Family Affair, and a tough retired judge in the 1980s light hearted crime drama, Hardcastle and McCormick. He also starred in The Brian Keith Show, which aired on NBC TV from 1972-74, where he portrayed a pediatrician who operated a free clinic on Oahu, in the CBS TV comedy series Heartland, and as General Custer's lawyer in the TV movie The Court-Martial Of George Armstrong Custer.

June 24, 2005: #DOTD: #RIP: Paul Winchell, American ventriloquist, comedian, actor, voice artist, humanitarian, and inventor (b. December 21, 1922) #dies in his sleep of natural causes at his home in Moorpark, California at the age of 82, after years of recurring mental problems that came from his youth. He wrote a long and detailed autobiography called Winch, The Autobiography - published in April 2004 - which revealed the bad treatment he had from his mother for a considerable period, and the mental impact that continued to negatively affect him for decades after his mother's death (Clara Wilchinski died in 1953 when she was only 58 years old, and Paul was 30). Winchell was survived by his wife, his children, and three grandchildren. His remains were cremated, and his ashes scattered over his home property. Winchell was estranged from his children, and they were not immediately informed of his death. Upon learning of it, April posted an entry on her website: "I got a phone call a few minutes ago, telling me that my father passed away yesterday. A source close to my dad, or at least, closer than I was, decided to tell me himself, instead of letting me find out on the news, which I appreciate. Apparently a decision had been made not to tell me, or my father's other children. My father was a very troubled and unhappy man. If there is another place after this one, it is my hope that he now has the peace that eluded him on earth." Paul Winchell was born Paul Wilchinsky in New York City to Solomon Wilchinsky and Clara Fuchs. His father was a tailor; his grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Congress Poland and Austria-Hungary. Winchell's initial ambition was to become a physician, but the Great Depression wiped out any chance of his family's ability to afford medical school tuition. At age 6, his legs atrophied after contracting polio. Winchell claimed relentless weight training allowed him to overcome the effects. When Winchell was 12 or 13, he came across a magazine advertisement offering a ventriloquism kit for ten cents. Back at school, he asked his art teacher, Jero Magon, if he could receive class credit for creating a ventriloquist's dummy. Magon was agreeable, and Winchell thanked him, naming his creation Jerry Mahoney. Winchell went back to reading magazines, gathering jokes from them and putting together a comedy routine, which he then took to the Major Bowes Amateur Hour in 1938, winning first prize. A touring offer, playing various theaters with the Major Bowes Review, was part of the prize. Bandleader Ted Weems saw the young Winchell while on tour; he visited Winchell and made him an offer of employment. Winchell accepted and became a professional at age 14. His career flourished throughout the 1950s and 1960s. From 1950 to 1954, he hosted The Paul Winchell Show, which also used two other titles during its prime time run on NBC, The Speidel Show, and What' My Name?. From 1965-1968, Winchell hosted the children' television series, Winchell-Mahoney Time. Winchell made guest appearances on Emmy Award-winning television series from the late 1950s to the mid 1970s, such as Perry Mason, The Dick Van Dyke Show, McMillan and Wife, The Donna Reed Show, and two appearances as Homer Winch on The Beverly Hillbillies in 1962. In animation, he was the original voice of Winnie The Pooh' Tigger; Dick Dastardly on Wacky Races and Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines; The Smurf' Gargamel; Clyde and Softy on Wacky Races and The Perils of Penelope Pitstop; Fleegle on The Banana Splits; and other characters. Winchell, who had medical training, was also an inventor, becoming the first person to build and patent a mechanical artificial heart, implantable in the chest cavity (US Patent #3097366). He has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work in television. Winchell had three children: a son, Stacy Paul Winchell; a daughter, Stephanie, from his first marriage to Dorothy "Dottie" Movitz; and a daughter, April Winchell (the current voice of Clarabelle Cow), who is a comedian and voice actress, from his second marriage to actress Nina Russel. His third wife was the former Jean Freeman. Winchell's autobiography, Winch (2004), exposed many details of Winchell's life that had previously been kept private, including early stories of an abused childhood, a long history of depression and at least one mental breakdown which resulted in a short stint in an institution. The autobiography caused a major estrangement between Winchell and his children, prompting daughter April to publicly defend her mother, who was negatively portrayed in the book. After writing in God 2000: Religion Without the Bible (1982) that religion brought more chaos to humanity than any "other invention of man", Winchell expressed deist opinions within his 2004 book Protect God.

June 24, 1509: The English Monarchy (The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of England): Coronations: The Coronation Of Henry VIII And Catherine Of Aragon: -- Henry VIII and Catherine Of Aragon are crowned King and Queen Of England. Henry VIII Of England married Catherine Of Aragon on June 11, 1509; on May 23, 1533, the marriage was declared null and void. Catherine (Spanish: Catalina) of Aragon (December 16, 1485 - January 7, 1536) was Queen Of England from June 1509 until the annullment of her marriage; she was previously Princess of Wales as the wife of Henry's elder brother Arthur. The daughter of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II Of Aragon (the King and Queen who united Spain and sponsored Christopher Columbus and his voyage to the New World), Catherine was three years old when she was betrothed to Arthur, Prince Of Wales, heir apparent to the English throne. They married in 1501, but Arthur died five months later. In 1507, she held the position of ambassador of the Aragonese Crown in England, the first female ambassador in European history. Catherine subsequently married Arthur's younger brother, the recently ascended Henry VIII, in 1509. For six months in 1513, she served as regent of England while Henry VIII was in France. During that time the English won the Battle of Flodden, an event in which Catherine played an important part with an emotional speech about English courage. By 1525, Henry VIII was infatuated with Anne Boleyn and dissatisfied that his marriage to Catherine had produced no surviving sons, leaving their daughter, the future Mary I Of England, as heir presumptive at a time when there was no established precedent for a woman on the throne. He sought to have their marriage annulled, setting in motion a chain of events that led to England's schism with the Catholic Church. When Pope Clement VII refused to annul the marriage, Henry defied him by assuming supremacy over religious matters. In 1533 their marriage was consequently declared invalid and Henry married Anne on the judgement of clergy in England, without reference to the Pope. Catherine refused to accept Henry as Supreme Head Of The Church Of England and considered herself the King's rightful wife and queen, attracting much popular sympathy. Despite this, she was acknowledged only as Dowager Princess of Wales by Henry. After being banished from court, she lived out the remainder of her life at Kimbolton Castle, and died there on January 7 ,1536. English people held Catherine in high esteem, and her death set off tremendous mourning. The controversial book The Education of a Christian Woman by Juan Luis Vives, which claimed women have the right to an education, was commissioned by and dedicated to her. Such was Catherine's impression on people that even her enemy, Thomas Cromwell, said of her, "If not for her sex, she could have defied all the heroes of History." She successfully appealed for the lives of the rebels involved in the Evil May Day (the name of a riot which took place in 1517 as a protest against foreigners living in London), for the sake of their families. Catherine also won widespread admiration by starting an extensive programme for the relief of the poor. She was a patron of Renaissance humanism, and a friend of the great scholars Erasmus Of Rotterdam and Thomas More.
