Known as The Antikythera Mechanism, it could also be used to track the four-year cycle of athletic games which was similar to an Olympiad, the cycle of the ancient Olympic Games. This artefact was retrieved from the sea in 1901, and identified on May 17, 1902 as containing a gear by archaeologist Valerios Stais, among wreckage retrieved from a shipwreck off the coast of the Greek island Antikythera. The instrument is believed to have been designed and constructed by Greek scientists and has been variously dated to about 87 BC, or between 150 and 100 BC, or to 205 BC, or to within a generation before the shipwreck, which has been dated to approximately 70-60 BC. The device, housed in the remains of a 34 cm x 18 cm x 9 cm (13.4 in x 7.1 in x 3.5 in) wooden box, was found as one lump, later separated into three main fragments which are now divided into 82 separate fragments after conservation efforts. Four of these fragments contain gears, while inscriptions are found on many others. The largest gear is approximately 14 centimetres (5.5 in) in diameter and originally had 223 teeth. It is a complex clockwork mechanism composed of at least 30 meshing bronze gears. A team led by Mike Edmunds and Tony Freeth at Cardiff University used modern computer x-ray tomography and high resolution surface scanning to image inside fragments of the crust-encased mechanism and read the faintest inscriptions that once covered the outer casing of the machine. Detailed imaging of the mechanism suggests that it had 37 gear wheels enabling it to follow the movements of the Moon and the Sun through the zodiac, to predict eclipses and even to model the irregular orbit of the Moon, where the Moon's velocity is higher in its perigee than in its apogee. This motion was studied in the 2nd century BC by astronomer Hipparchus of Rhodes, and it is speculated that he may have been consulted in the machine's construction. The knowledge of this technology was lost at some point in antiquity. Similar technological works later appeared in the medieval Byzantine and Islamic worlds, but works with similar complexity did not appear again until the development of mechanical astronomical clocks in Europe in the fourteenth century. All known fragments of the Antikythera mechanism are now kept at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, along with a number of artistic reconstructions and replicas of the mechanism to demonstrate how it may have looked and worked. May 29, 2004) is #born Archibald Cox Jr. in Plainfield, New Jersey. Archibald "Archie" Cox Jr. served as the 31st U.S. Solicitor General under President John F. Kennedy, and later as a special prosecutor that oversaw the federal criminal investigation into the Watergate Scandal. During his career, he was a pioneering expert on labor law and also an authority on constitutional law. The Journal of Legal Studies has identified Cox as one of the most cited legal scholars of the 20th century. Cox was Senator John F. Kennedy's labor advisor and in 1961, President Kennedy appointed him solicitor general, an office he held for four and a half years. Cox became famous when under mounting pressure and charges of corruption against persons closely associated with Richard Nixon, Attorney General nominee Elliot Richardson appointed him as Special Prosecutor to oversee the federal criminal investigation into the Watergate burglary and other related crimes that became popularly known as the Watergate Scandal. He had a dramatic confrontation with Nixon when he subpoenaed the tapes the president had secretly recorded of his Oval Office conversations. When Cox refused a direct order from the White House to seek no further tapes or presidential materials, Nixon fired him in an incident that became known as the Saturday Night Massacre. Cox's firing produced a public relations disaster for Nixon and set in motion impeachment proceedings which ended with Nixon stepping down from the presidency. Cox returned to teaching, lecturing, and writing for the rest of his life, giving his opinions on the role of the Supreme Court in the development of the law and the role of the lawyer in society. Although he was recommended to President Jimmy Carter for a seat on the First Circuit Court of Appeals, his nomination fell victim to the dispute between the president and Senator Ted Kennedy. He was appointed to head several public-service, watchdog and good-government organizations, including serving for 12 years as head of Common Cause. In addition he argued two important Supreme Court cases, winning both: one concerning the constitutionality of federal campaign finance restrictions (Buckley v. Valeo) and the other the leading early case testing affirmative action (Regents of the University of California v. Bakke). Archibald Cox died at his home in Brooksville, Maine of natural causes, aged 92. His burial details are not publicly disclosed. He and his wife, Phyllis, had been married for 67 years; the couple had two daughters and a son. Phyllis died on February 6, 2007. The Moehne and Edersee Dams were breached, causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr valley and of villages in the Eder valley; the Sorpe Dam sustained only minor damage. Two hydroelectric power stations were destroyed and several more damaged. Factories and mines were also damaged and destroyed. An estimated 1,600 civilians, about 600 Germans and 1,000 mainly Soviet forced labourers died. Despite rapid repairs by the Germans, production did not return to normal until September, four months later. The raid was the subject of the 1955 film The Dam Busters, in which Wallis was played by Michael Redgrave, and much of the attack sequence was the inspiration fot the first Star Wars film's attack on the Death Star. No. 617 Squadron is a Royal Air Force aircraft squadron, currently based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in the United States. It is commonly known as the "Dambusters", for its actions during Operation Chastise. In the early 21st century it operated the Tornado GR4 in the ground attack and reconnaissance role until being disbanded in the Spring of 2014. The squadron reformed on 17 April 2018, and was equipped at RAF Marham in June 2018 with the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning, becoming the first squadron to be based in the UK with this advanced V/STOL type. Board of Education, the U.S. Supreme Court issues a unanimous 9-0 landmark decision ruling that segregation of public schools "solely on the basis of race" denies black children "equal educational opportunity" even though "physical facilities and other 'tangible' factors may have been equal. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.", and therefore laws that impose such segregation violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Thurgood Marshall had argued the case before the Court. He went to become the first African American appointed to the Supreme Court. The Brown v. Board Of Education decision partially overruled the Court's 1896 decision, Plessy v. Ferguson, which held that racial segregation laws did not violate the U.S. Constitution as long as the facilities for each race were equal in quality, a doctrine that had come to be known as "separate but equal." The Court's unanimous decision in Brown and its related cases paved the way for integration, was a major victory of the civil rights movement, and a model for many future impact litigation cases. The case originated in 1951 when the public school system in Topeka, Kansas, refused to enroll local black resident Oliver Brown's daughter at the school closest to their home, instead requiring her to ride a bus to a segregated black school farther away. The Browns and twelve other local black families in similar situations filed a class-action lawsuit in U.S. federal court against the Topeka Board of Education, alleging that its segregation policy was unconstitutional. A special three-judge court of the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas heard the case and ruled against the Browns, relying on the precedent of Plessy and its "separate but equal" doctrine. The Browns, represented by NAACP chief counsel Thurgood Marshall, then appealed the ruling directly to the Supreme Court. In the Southern United States, the reaction to Brown among most white people was "noisy and stubborn", especially in the "Deep South" where racial segregation was deeply entrenched in society. The decision's 14 pages did not spell out any sort of method for ending racial segregation in schools, and the Court's second decision in Brown II (349 U.S. 294 (1955)) only ordered states to desegregate "with all deliberate speed.", which some Southern states chose to interpret as meaning however long they wanted to take. Many Southern governmental and political leaders embraced a plan known as "massive resistance", created by Senator Harry F. Byrd, in order to frustrate attempts to force them to de-segregate their school systems. Four years later, in the case of Cooper v. She pushed to find replacement riders to resume the rides, and on May 17, a new set of riders, 10 students from Nashville who were active in the Nashville Student Movement, took a bus to Birmingham, Alabama where they were arrested by Bull Connor and jailed. The students kept their spirits up in jail by singing freedom songs. Out of frustration, Connor drove them back up to the Tennessee line and dropped them off, saying, "I just couldn't stand their singing." They immediately returned to Birmingham. The Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated southern United States in 1961 and subsequent years to challenge the non-enforcement of the United States Supreme Court decisions Morgan v. Virginia (1946) and Boynton v. Virginia (1960), which ruled that segregated public buses were unconstitutional. The Southern states had ignored the rulings and the federal government did nothing to enforce them. The first Freedom Ride left Washington, D.C., on May 4, 1961, and was scheduled to arrive in New Orleans on May 17. Boynton outlawed racial segregation in the restaurants and waiting rooms in terminals serving buses that crossed state lines. Five years prior to the Boynton ruling, the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) had issued a ruling in Sarah Keys v. Carolina Coach Company (1955) that had explicitly denounced the Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) doctrine of separate but equal in interstate bus travel. The ICC failed to enforce its ruling, and Jim Crow travel laws remained in force throughout the South. The Freedom Riders challenged this status quo by riding interstate buses in the South in mixed racial groups to challenge local laws or customs that enforced segregation in seating. The Freedom Rides, and the violent reactions they provoked, bolstered the credibility of the American Civil Rights Movement. They called national attention to the disregard for the federal law and the local violence used to enforce segregation in the southern United States. Police arrested riders for trespassing, unlawful assembly, violating state and local Jim Crow laws, and other alleged offenses, but often they first let white mobs attack them without intervention. The Congress Of Racial Equality (CORE) sponsored most of the subsequent Freedom Rides, but some were also organized by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). The Freedom Rides followed dramatic sit-ins against segregated lunch counters conducted by students and youth throughout the South, and boycotts of retail establishments that maintained segregated facilities. The Supreme Court's decision in Boynton supported the right of interstate travelers to disregard local segregation ordinances. Southern local and state police considered the actions of the Freedom Riders to be criminal and arrested them in some locations. In some localities, such as Birmingham, Alabama, the police cooperated with Ku Klux Klan chapters and other white people opposing the actions, and allowed mobs to attack the riders. May 17, 1974: Terrorism: Terrorism In The United States: The Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) (The United Federated Forces Of The Symbionese Liberation Army): The Symbionese Liberation Army Shootout: -- #DOTD: Following an anonymous phone call to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) stating that several heavily armed people were staying at the caller's daughter's house, one of the largest police shootouts in U.S. history occurs (4,000 rounds shot by the SLA, 5,000 by police) after 400 LAPD officers under the command of Captain Mervin King, along with SWAT teams, the FBI, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD), California Highway Patrol (CHP), and Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), surrounded the neighborhood of the Symbionese Liberation Army's headquarters that afternoon. The leader of a SWAT team used a bullhorn to announce, "Occupants of 1466 East 54th Street, this is the Los Angeles Police Department speaking. Come out with your hands up!" A young child walked out, along with an older man. The man stated that no one else was in the house, but the child intervened stating that several people were in the house with guns and ammunition. After several more attempts to get anyone else to leave the house, a member of the SWAT team fired tear gas projectiles into the house. This was answered by heavy bursts of automatic gunfire, and a violent gun battle began, killing six SLA members. Every round fired by SLA members at the police missed the officers; there were no casualties among law enforcement, firefighters and civilians. The police were firing semi-automatic AR-15 and AR-180 rifles, while the SLA members were armed with M1 Carbines, which had been converted to fully automatic fire, and threw homemade grenades made from 35 mm film canisters. During the shootout, police continued to fire dozens of tear gas grenades into the home, trying to flush out the SLA members. About two hours into the shootout, the house caught fire, probably due to an exploding tear gas canister. As the house began to burn, two women uninvolved with the SLA left from the rear and one came out to the front, and were taken into custody. As automatic weapons fire continued, Nancy Ling Perry and Camilla Hall came out of the house.; investigators working for their parents claimed that they walked out intending to surrender and were unarmed, but police later stated that Hall was shot in the head by police as she aimed a weapon towards them while Perry was providing covering fire. After Hall's body fell to the ground, it was pulled back inside the burning house by Angela Atwood. Perry followed Hall out of the house, firing a pistol at officers as she emerged, and was shot twice. Her body remained outside the house. The SLA dead were Nancy Ling Perry ("Fahizah"), Angela Atwood ("General Gelina"), Camilla Hall ("Gabi"), Willie Wolfe ("Kahjoh", misspelled by the media at the time as "Cujo"), Donald DeFreeze ("Cinque"), and Patricia Soltysik ("Mizmoon," "Zoya"). All but one of the bodies were found huddled in a crawl space under the house, which had burned down around them. The coroner's report concluded that Donald DeFreeze committed suicide by shooting himself in the side of the head. The rest died from smoke inhalation, burns and gunshot wounds. After the shooting stopped and the fire was extinguished, 19 firearms - including rifles, pistols, and shotguns - were recovered. New broadcasting technology (smaller portable cameras and more nimble and versatile mobile units that made it easier to cover unfolding news events) had recently been acquired by area TV stations, so Hearst and the Harrises were able to watch the televised siege live from their hotel room in Anaheim. The United Federated Forces Of The Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) was an American left-wing organization active between 1973 and 1975 that considered itself a vanguard army (according the Leninist Revolutionary Struggle theory, Vanguardism is a strategy whereby the most class-conscious and politically "advanced" sections of the proletariat or working class, described as the revolutionary vanguard, form organizations in order to draw larger sections of the working class towards revolutionary politics and serve as manifestations of proletarian political power opposed to the bourgeois). The SLA was considered a terrorist organization by the FBI and American law enforcement, and the pursuit and prosecution of its members lasted until 2003, when member Sara Jane Olson was sentenced for second-degree murder. During its active years, the group committed bank robberies, murdered police officers and civilians, and attempted bombings, among other violent crimes. The SLA became internationally notorious for the kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst, abducting the 19-year-old from Berkeley, California. Interest increased when Hearst, in audiotaped messages delivered to and broadcast by regional news media, announced that she had joined the SLA. Hearst later said that members of the SLA threatened to kill her, held her in close confinement, and sexually assaulted and brainwashed her. May 17, 1987: Scandals: Political Scandals: Political Scandals Of The United States: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Iran-Iraq War: The Tanker War: Iraq-United States Relations: The USS Stark Incident: -- An Iraqi aircraft identified as a Dassault Mirage F1 (actually a modified Falcon 50 business jet) fires two Exocet anti-ship missiles into the U.S. Navy guided-missile frigate USS Stark, killing 37 and injuring 21 of her crew. Rather than blame Iraq, the Reagan administration attributed the blame to Iran, citing its alleged belligerence in the underlying conflict. The plane had taken off from Shaibah (in Iraq) at 20:00 and had flown south into the Persian Gulf. The pilot fired the first Exocet missile from a range of 22.5 nautical miles (41.7 km), and the second from 15.5 nautical miles (28.7 km), just about the time Stark issued a standard warning by radio. The frigate did not detect the missiles with radar; warning was given by the lookout only moments before the missiles struck. The first penetrated the port-side hull and failed to detonate, but left flaming rocket fuel in its path. The second entered at almost the same point, and, leaving a 3-by-4-meter (10 by 13 ft) gash, exploded in crew quarters. 37 sailors were killed and 21 were injured. USS Stark was deployed to the Middle East Force of the United States Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) in 1984 and 1987. Captain Glenn R. Brindel was the commanding officer during the 1987 deployment. During the event, no weapons were fired in defense of Stark. The Phalanx CIWS remained in standby mode, Mark 36 SRBOC countermeasures were not armed until seconds before the missile hit. The attacking Exocet missiles and Mirage aircraft were in a blindspot of the STIR fire control director (Separate tracking and illumination Radar, part of the Mk 92 Guided Missile Fire Control System), and the Oto Melara Mk 75 76 mm/62 caliber naval gun, but in the clear for the MK 92 CAS (Combined Antenna System, primary search and tracking radar of the Mk 92 Guided Missile Fire Control System) and the Mk 13 Mod 4 single-arm launcher. The ship failed to maneuver to bring its Mk 75 to bear before the first missile hit. On fire and listing, the frigate was brought under control by its crew during the night. The ship made its way to Bahrain where, after temporary repairs by the destroyer tender USS Acadia to make her seaworthy, she returned to her home port of Naval Station Mayport, under her own power. The ship was eventually repaired at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Mississippi for 142M USD. It is unknown whether Iraqi leaders authorized the attack. Initial claims by the Iraqi government that the Stark was inside the Iran-Iraq War zone were shown to be false. The motives and orders of the pilot remain unanswered. American officials have claimed he was executed, but an ex-Iraqi Air Force commander later said that the pilot who attacked Stark was not punished, and remained alive. Citing lapses in training requirements and lax procedures, the U.S. Navy's board of inquiry relieved Captain Brindel of command and recommended him for court-martial, along with Tactical Action Officer Lieutenant Basil E. Moncrief. Instead, Brindel and Moncrief received non-judicial punishment from Admiral Frank B. Kelso II and letters of reprimand. Both opted for early retirement, while Executive Officer Lieutenant Commander Raymond Gajan Jr. was detached for cause and received a letter of admonition. USS Stark (FFG-31), 23rd ship of the Oliver Hazard Perry class of guided-missile frigates, was named for Admiral Harold Rainsford Stark (1880-1972), an officer in the United States Navy during World War I and World War II, who served as the 8th Chief of Naval Operations from August 1, 1939, to March 26, 1942. Ordered from Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle, Washington, on January 23, 1978, Stark was laid down on August 24, 1979, launched on May 30, 1980, and commissioned on October 23, 1982 with CDR Terence W. Costello commanding. Two years after an Iraqi jet fired two missiles at Stark, killing 37 U.S. sailors on board, she was decommissioned on May 7 1999, and Stark was scrapped in 2006. May 17, 1829: #DOTD: #RIP: John Jay, American jurist, statesman, patriot, diplomat and politician, Founding Father of the United States, signatory of the Treaty Of Paris of 1783, second Governor of New York, and the first Chief Justice of the United States from 1789 to 1795 (b December 23 (O.S. December 12), 1745) #dies at his Bedford, New York home at age 83, the last surviving President of the Continental Congress and also the last surviving delegate to the First Continental Congress. On the night of May 14, 1829, Jay was stricken with palsy, probably caused by a stroke, and lived for just three more days. Jay had chosen to be buried in Rye, New York, where he lived as a boy. In 1807, he had transferred the remains of his wife Sarah Livingston and those of his colonial ancestors from the family vault in the Bowery in Manhattan to Rye, establishing a private cemetery. Today, the Jay Cemetery is an integral part of the Boston Post Road Historic District, adjacent to the historic Jay Estate. The Cemetery is maintained by the Jay descendants and closed to the public. It is the oldest active cemetery associated with a figure from the American Revolution. John Jay was born to a prominent merchant family in New York City, descended from Huguenoy who had come to New York to escape religious persecution in France. He directed U.S. foreign policy for much of the 1780s and was an important leader of the Federalist Party after the ratification of the United States Constitution in 1788. Jay was elected to the Second Continental Congress, and he served as the President of the Second Continental Congress. From 1779 to 1782, Jay served as the ambassador to Spain, and he convinced Spain to provide financial aid to the fledgling United States. He also served as a negotiator of the Treaty Of Paris, in which Britain recognized American independence. Following the end of the war, Jay served as Secretary of Foreign Affairs, directing United States foreign policy under the Articles Of Confederation government. He would also serve as the first Secretary Of State on an interim basis. A proponent of strong, centralized government, Jay worked to ratify the United States Constitution in New York in 1788 by pseudonymously writing five of the several The Federalist papers, along with the main authors Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. After the establishment of the new federal government, Jay was appointed by President George Washington to become the first Chief Justice of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1795. The Jay Court experienced a light workload, deciding just four cases over six years. In 1794, while serving as Chief Justice, Jay negotiated the highly controversial Jay Treaty with Britain. Jay received a handful of electoral votes in three of the first four presidential elections, but never undertook a serious bid for the presidency. Jay served as the Governor of New York from 1795 to 1801. Long an opponent of slavery, he helped enact a law that provided for the gradual emancipation of slaves, and the institution of slavery was abolished in New York in Jay's lifetime. May 17, 1969: The History Of Spaceflight: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Space Age: The Space Race: Space Probes: Interplanetary Space Probes: The Soviet Space Program: The Venera Program: Venera 6 (Russian: Venus 6) [2V (V-69) No.331]: -- Soviet space probe Venera 6 begins its descent into the atmosphere of Venus, sending back atmospheric data before, as predicted, it was crushed by the planet's high atmospheric pressure. Venera 6 was very similar to Venera 4 although it was of a stronger design. When the atmosphere of Venus was approached, a capsule with a mass of 405 kilograms (893 lb) was jettisoned from the main spacecraft. This capsule contained scientific instruments. During descent towards the surface of Venus, a parachute opened to slow the rate of descent. For 51 minutes on May 17, 1969, while the capsule was suspended from the parachute, data from the Venusian atmosphere were returned. It landed at 5dg S 23dg E. The spacecraft also carried a medallion bearing the State Coat of Arms of the Soviet Union and a bas-relief of Lenin to the night side of Venus. Given the results from Venera 4, the Venera 5 and Venera 6 landers contained new chemical analysis experiments tuned to provide more precise measurements of the atmosphere's components. Knowing the atmosphere was extremely dense, the parachutes were also made smaller so the capsule would reach its full crush depth before running out of power (as Venera-4 had done). Venera 6 was launched on January 10, 1969 atop a Molniya-M launch vehicle into an Earth parking orbit at 05:51:52 UT from the Baikonur Cosmodrome's Gagarin's Start (Baikonur Site 1, Site 1/5) launch site, then launched vehicle by its upper stage Tyazheliy Sputnik (69-002C) launch platform towards Venus. May 17, 1682: #BOTD: Bartholomew Roberts, infamous as Black Bart (Welsh: Barti Ddu) and The Great Pyrate, Welsh pirate and the most successful pirate of the Golden Age of Piracy (measured by vessels captured), taking over 400 prizes in his career (d. February 10, 1722) is #born John Roberts in Casnewydd Bach, between Fishguard and Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Roberts raided ships off the Americas and the West African coast between 1719 and 1722; he is also noted for creating his own Pirate Code, and adopting an early variant of the Skull and Crossbones flag. Roberts' infamy and success made him a popular subject for writers of both fiction and non-fiction. To this day, Roberts continues to feature in novels, films and video games, as well as inspire fictional characters (such as the Dread Pirate Roberts). Captain Roberts died aged 39 during The Battle Of Cape Lopez off the coast of Gabon, West Africa when Captain Roberts was killed by grapeshot, which struck him in the throat while he stood on the deck of the pirate ship Royal Fortune, fired by the pursuing ship of the line HMS Swallow under the command of Captain (later Admiral of the Fleet) Chaloner Ogle. Before Roberts' body could be captured by Ogle, Roberts's wish to be buried at sea with all his arms and ornaments on (a request he had repeated in life) was fulfilled by his crew, who weighed his body down and threw it overboard after wrapping it in his ship's sail. May 17, 2024: #DOTD: #RIP Bud Anderson, retired officer in the United States Air Force, a triple ace of World War II, and the oldest and highest scoring living American fighter ace unitl his death (b. January 13, 1922) #dies in his sleep at his home in Auburn, California, on May 17, 2024, at the age of 102. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. A life sized bronze statue of Anderson dressed in his leather flight helmet and goggles, and wearing a parachute, was installed in Grass Valley, California about three months after his death. Bud Anderson was born Clarence Emil Anderson in Oakland, California. During the war he was the highest scoring flying ace in his P-51 Mustang squadron. Towards the end of Anderson's two combat tours in Europe in 1944 he was promoted to major at 22, a young age even for a highly effective officer in wartime. After the war Anderson became a well regarded fighter test pilot, and a fighter squadron and wing commander. He served his wing commander tour in combat in the Vietnam War. He retired as a full colonel in 1972, after which he worked in flight test management for McDonnell Douglas.. He was a close friend of Brigadier General Chuck Yeager during and after the end of World War II, where both served in the 357th Fighter Group (also known as "The Yoxford Boys" because their home airfield was located in Yoxford, a village in East Suffolk, England), the two of them being relied upon to spot enemy fighters during missions because they both had better than 20-20 eyesight. A member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, Anderson has remained a sought-after speaker at aviation and military events well into his 90s. On July 19, 2008, Anderson was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. In 2013, he was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. A life-size bronze statue of him was installed at the Auburn Municipal Airport. In 2015, he along with other flying aces received the Congressional Gold Medal, in recognition of "their heroic military service and defense of the country's freedom throughout the history of aviation warfare." Anderson turned 100 in January 2022. His hometown Auburn honored him with a grand celebration. He was the last living American triple flying ace of World War II. April 24, 1925) #dies in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California, aged 82. His remains were cremated; the final disposition of his ashes are not known. Eugen Weber was born Eugen Joseph Weber in Bucharest, Kingdom of Romania, the son of Sonia and Emmanuel Weber, a well-to-do industrialist. Weber became a historian because of his interest in politics, an interest dating back to at least the age of 12. He described his political awakening as a realization of social injustices: "It was my vague dissatisfaction with social hierarchy, the subjection of servants and peasants, the diffuse violence of everyday life in relatively peaceful country amongst apparently gentle folk". Weber's books and articles have been translated into several languages. He earned many accolades for his scholarship, including membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, membership to the American Philosophical Society, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies and the Fulbright Program. His 1,300-page Modern History of Europe: Men, Cultures, and Societies from the Renaissance to the Present (1971) was described "a phenomenal job of synthesis and interpretation that reflects Eugen's wide and deep learning," by his UCLA history colleague Hans Rogger. In addition to his distinguished American Awards and honors, he was awarded the Ordre des Palmes Academiques in 1977 for his contribution to French culture. When Weber was ten, his parents hired a private tutor, but the tutor did not stay long. At age ten, Weber was already reading The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas, adventure novels by Karl May, poetry by Victor Hugo and Homer. Weber was also reading George Sand, Jules Verne and "every cheap paperback I could afford". At age 12, he was sent to boarding school in Herne Bay, in south-eastern England, and later to Ashville College, Harrogate. During World War II, he served with the British Army in Belgium, Germany, and India between 1943 and 1947, and rising to the rank of captain. Afterward, Weber studied history at the Sorbonne and Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) in Paris. While in France he met Jacqueline Brument-Roth, marrying her in 1950. Returning to Britain, Weber entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge, studying French and European history under David Thomson and graduating with a BA in 1950. He remained at Cambridge to study for a PhD, but his dissertation thesis was rejected after the external examiner, Alfred Cobban of the University of London, gave a negative review, saying it lacked sufficient archival sources. Weber briefly taught at Emmanuel College (1953-1954) and the University of Alberta (1954-1955) before settling in the United States, where he taught first at the University of Iowa (1955-1956) and then, until 1993 on his retirement, at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Eugen Weber wrote a column titled "LA Confidential" for the Los Angeles Times. He also wrote for several French popular newspapers and, in 1989, presented an American public television series, The Western Tradition, which consisted of fifty-two lectures of 30 minutes each. Weber took a pragmatic approach to history. He once observed "Nothing is more concrete than history, nothing less interested in theories or in abstract ideas. The great historians have fewer ideas about history than amateurs do; they merely have a way of ordering their facts to tell their story. It isn't theories they look for, but information, documents, and ideas about how to find and handle them." Weber is associated with several important academic arguments. His book: Peasants into Frenchmen: The Modernization of Rural France 1870-1914 is a classic presentation of modernization theory. Although other historians such as Henri Mendras had put forward similar theories about the modernization of the French countryside, Weber's book was amongst the first to focus on changes in the period between 1870 and 1914. Weber emphasizes that well into the 19th century few French citizens regularly spoke French, but rather regional languages or dialects such as Breton, Gascon, Basque, Catalan, Flemish, Alsatian, and Corsican. Even in French-speaking areas provincial loyalties often transcended the putative bond of the nation. Between 1870 and 1914, Weber argued, a number of new forces penetrated the previously isolated countryside. These included the judicial and school systems, the army, the church, railways, roads, and a market economy. The result was the wholesale transformation of the population from "peasants," basically ignorant of the wider nation, to Frenchmen. His book Apocalypses: Prophecies, Cults, and Millennial Beliefs through the Ages chronicles "apocalyptic visions and prophecies from Zarathustra to yesterday ... . beginning with the ancients of the West and the Orient and, especially ... the Jews and earliest Christians," finding that "an absolute belief in the end of time, when good would do final battle with evil, was omnipresent," inspiring "Crusades, scientific discoveries, works of art, voyages such as those of Columbus, rebellions" and reforms including American abolitionism. Weber proclaimed in "The Western Tradition" lectures of 1989 "... here we are at the end of the 20th century with a lot of people lonely in a Godless world -- and now they are denied not only God but the solid substance of judgment and perception". "The world has always been disgracefully managed but now you no longer know to whom to complain." After he traversed the whole spectrum of western thought, tradition, civilization, and progress in The Western Tradition, Weber pointed at some of the profound ancient lessons from the Bible and laments the fact that many people today do not read it themselves. As an agnostic, Weber viewed the Bible primarily as an important piece of historical literature, calling it: "the epitome of wisdom, violence, high aspiration, and the hurtful achievements of mankind". He concluded his final lecture in the Western Tradition series by praising Western man as Promethean and then with Wordsworth's poetic phrase, "we feel that we are greater than we know." Yet despite his boasts, during the same conversation he greatly praised both Anne and her brother for their "sense, wit, and courage". By March 1536, Henry was courting Jane Seymour. In order to marry Jane Seymour, Henry had Anne arrested and sent to the Tower of London, where she was tried before a jury of peers - which included Henry Percy, her former betrothed, and her own uncle, Thomas Howard - and found guilty on May 15. July 1, 1925) is #born Eric Alfred Leslie Satie in Honfleur, Normandy, France to a French father and a British mother; he signed his name Erik Satie after 1884. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, but was an undistinguished student and obtained no diploma. In the 1880s he worked as a pianist in cafe-cabaret in Montmartre, Paris, and began composing works, mostly for solo piano, such as his Gymnopedies and Gnossiennes. He also wrote music for a Rosicrucian sect to which he was briefly attached. After a spell in which he composed little, Satie entered Paris's second music academy, the Schola Cantorum, as a mature student. His studies there were more successful than those at the Conservatoire. From about 1910 he became the focus of successive groups of young composers attracted by his unconventionality and originality. Among them were the group known as Les Six. A meeting with Jean Cocteau in 1915 led to the creation of the ballet Parade (1917) for Serge Diaghilev, with music by Satie, sets and costumes by Pablo Picasso, and choreography by Leonide Massine. Satie's example guided a new generation of French composers away from post-Wagnerian impressionism towards a sparer, terser style. Among those influenced by him during his lifetime were Maurice Ravel and Francis Poulenc, and he is seen as an influence on more recent, minimalist composers such as John Cage and John Adams. His harmony is often characterised by unresolved chords, he sometimes dispensed with bar-lines, as in his Gnossiennes, and his melodies are generally simple and often reflect his love of old church music. He gave some of his later works absurd titles, such as Veritables Preludes flasques (pour un chien) ("True Flabby Preludes (for a Dog)", 1912), Croquis et agaceries d'un gros bonhomme en bois ("Sketches and Exasperations of a Big Wooden Man", 1913) and Sonatine bureaucratique ("Bureaucratic Sonatina", 1917). Most of his works are brief, and the majority are for solo piano. Exceptions include his "symphonic drama" Socrate (1919) and two late ballets Mercure and Relache (1924). Satie never married, and his home for most of his adult life was a single small room, first in Montmartre and, from 1898 to his death, in Arcueil, a suburb of Paris. He adopted various images over the years, including a period in quasi-priestly dress, another in which he always wore identically coloured velvet suits, and is known for his last persona, in neat bourgeois costume, with bowler hat, wing collar, and umbrella. May 17, 1988: #DOTD: #RIP: Frank Gallop, versatile American radio and television personality, singer, narrator and comedian (b. June 30, 1900) #dies of natural causes in Palm Beach, Florida, aged 87. His burial details are not publicly disclosed. He was born into a Jewish family in Boston, Massachusetts. Gallop established a career as a radio announcer on CBS and later with NBC; he was described as "the only announcer who sounds like he's wearing spats." As the announcer on radio's The Milton Berle Show, he was a comic foil for Berle. Gallop was also the announcer for Perry Como's 1950s - 1960s television shows. On February 13, 1964, Gallop made an unannounced appearance on Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall show dressed as a Beatle, mere days after their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. He sang a number of novelty songs in the 1950s and 1960s, most notably The Ballad Of Irving, a Jewish-humored parody of Lorne Greene's song "Ringo", which reached #2 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart, #34 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #35 in Canada. The song was also distributed in the UK by Decca Records. It was a popular song on the Dr. Demento radio show and has been included in at least one compilation album from the Demento show. "Irving" became part of an album, Would You Believe Frank Gallop Sings? This was followed by "The Son of Irving" in 1966. Gallop's hit Kapp album was called, When You're in Love the Whole World is Jewish; he toured several US cities as the result of his music's popularity. Gallop narrated the first Casper the Friendly Ghost cartoon in 1945. He also narrated two later "Casper" cartoons, There's Good Boos To-Night in 1948, and A-Haunting We Will Go in 1949. He was the narrator for an ABC animated children's program, Cartoonies, for six months in 1963. Gallop was also the narrator for a 1961 documentary The Legend of Rudolph Valentino and a 1962 Buster Keaton documentary, The Great Chase. In the mid 1940s, Frank Gallop met a beautiful chorus girl from Texas named Mary Lou Bentley (also Bently) who had been having a relationship with Walter Winchell. When her presence in the columnist's life became evident to his family and she realized he would not divorce his wife, she tried ending the relationship with Winchell and became Gallop's neighbor by moving into his Park Avenue apartment building. A romance developed between the pair, and at some point before 1946, they were married. Winchell was unwilling to concede the end of their relationship and continued to pursue Bentley with flowers and other gifts. Gallop became the object of his wrath. Winchell was able to have him constantly followed by police. He also learned where Gallop was auditioning for announcing jobs and convinced radio program sponsors not to hire him. Gallop was fired from a soap opera announcing job because of Winchell's pressure. By 1948, the couple divorced. Gallop liked being well-dressed, with a closet full of suits and ties for all occasions. He contended that the very strong coffee he brewed was wonderful, while his friends would ask for tea instead after sampling it. He admitted to being somewhat superstitious in some respects such as stopping at the same newsstand after work because he had been a customer there after his first Lights Out appearance. Gallop also said he disliked having the trait. In addition to doing his own decorating, Gallop collected art. Remaining active in announcing into the 1970s, Gallop divided his time between homes in New York and Palm Beach, Florida. May 17, 1996: #DOTD: #RIP: "Johnny Guitar" Watson (or Johnny "Guitar" Watson), African American blues, rhythm and blues, soul, and funk singer, songwriter and guitarist (b. February 3, 1935) #dies of a heart attack, collapsing on stage while on tour in Yokohama, Japan. His remains were brought home for interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California and buried in the Great Mausoleum, Sanctuary of Enduring Honor, Holly Terrace entrance. He was born John Watson Jr in Houston, Texas. A flamboyant showman and electric guitarist in the style of T-Bone Walker, his recording career spanned forty years, and encompassed rhythm and blues, funk and soul music. Watson recorded throughout the 1950s and 1960s with some success. His creative reinvention in the 1970s with funk overtones, saw Watson have hits with "Ain't That a Bitch" and "Superman Lover". His highest charting single was 1977's "A Real Mother for Ya". Frank Zappa stated that "Watson's 1956 song 'Three Hours Past Midnight' inspired me to become a guitarist". Watson contributed to Zappa's albums One Size Fits All (1975), Them or Us (1984), Thing-Fish (1984) and Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention (1985). May 17, 1969: Record Releases: -- The Who's rock opera LP set Tommy released in the US by Decca Records; Track Records would release it in the UK one week later on May 23. Tommy is the fourth studio album by the English rock band The Who, a double album first released in May 1969. The album was mostly composed by guitarist Pete Townshend, and is a rock opera that tells the story of Tommy Walker, a "deaf, dumb and blind" boy, including his experiences with life and his relationship with his family. Townshend came up with the concept of Tommy after being introduced to the work of Meher Baba, and attempted to translate Baba's teachings into music. Recording on the album began in September 1968, but took six months to complete as material needed to be arranged and re-recorded in the studio. Tommy was acclaimed upon its release by critics, who hailed it as the Who's breakthrough. Its critical standing diminished slightly in later years; nonetheless, several writers view it as an important and influential album in the history of rock music. The Who promoted the album's release with an extensive tour, including a live version of Tommy, which lasted throughout 1969 and 1970. Key gigs from the tour included appearances at Woodstock, the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival, the University of Leeds, the Metropolitan Opera House, and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. The live performances of Tommy drew critical praise and rejuvenated the band's career. Subsequently, the rock opera developed into other media, including a Seattle Opera production in 1971, an orchestral version by Lou Reizner in 1972, a film in 1975, and a Broadway musical in 1992. The original album has sold 20 million copies and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Bill Bruford, English drummer, songwriter, and producer who first gained prominence as a founding member of the progressive rock band Yes, is #born William Scott Bruford in Sevenoaks, Kent, England. After leaving Yes in 1972, Bruford spent the rest of the 1970s recording and touring with King Crimson (1972-1974) and Roy Harper (1975), and touring with Genesis (1976) and U.K. (1978). In 1978, he formed his own group, Bruford, which was active until 1980. During the 1980s, Bruford returned to King Crimson for three years (1981-1984), collaborated with several artists (including Patrick Moraz and David Torn), and formed his own electric jazz band Earthworks in 1986. He then played with his former Yes bandmates in Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, which eventually led to a very brief second stint in Yes. Bruford played in King Crimson for his third and final tenure from 1994 to 1997, then continued with a new acoustic configuration of Earthworks. On January 1, 2009, Bruford retired from professional drumming, only briefly returning for a few private gigs. He has pursued other projects since then, including the operation of his two record labels, Summerfold and Winterfold, releasing an autobiography in 2009, and speaking and writing about music. In 2016, after four and a half years of study, Bruford received a PhD in Music from the University of Surrey. That year, Bruford ranked No. 16 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time". He was cremated at a simple civil service at The Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France, where his ashes are interred. Vangelis was born Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou in Agria, Greece, a coastal town in Magnesia, Thessaly. He was best known for his Academy Award-winning score to Chariots of Fire (1981), as well as for composing scores to the films Blade Runner (1982), Missing (1982), Antarctica (1983), The Bounty (1984), 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), and Alexander (2004), and for the use of his music in both the 1989 French documentary series From Nuremberg To Nuremberg, and the 1980 PBS documentary series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage by Carl Sagan. Born in Agria and raised in Athens, Vangelis began his career in the 1960s as a member of the rock bands The Forminx and Aphrodite's Child; the latter's album 666 (1972) is now recognised as a progressive-psychedelic rock classic. Vangelis first settled in Paris, and gained initial recognition for his scores to the Frederic Rossif animal documentaries L'Apocalypse des Animaux, La Fete sauvage, and Opera sauvage. He also released his first solo albums during this time, and performed as a solo artist. In 1975, Vangelis relocated to London where he built his home recording facility named Nemo Studios and released a series of successful and influential albums for RCA Records, including: Heaven and Hell (1975), Albedo 0.39 (1976), Spiral (1977), and China (1979). From 1979 to 1986, Vangelis performed in a duo with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson, releasing several albums as Jon and Vangelis. He also collaborated with Irene Papas on two albums of Greek traditional and religious songs. Vangelis reached his commercial peak in the 1980s and 1990s. His score for Chariots of Fire (1981) won him an Academy Award for Best Original Score and the film's main theme, "Chariots of Fire - Titles" went to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, while score for 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992) was nominated at Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and the film's soundtrack and main theme topped the European charts selling millions of copies. His compilation albums Themes (1989), Portraits (So Long Ago, So Clear) (1996), and studio album Voices (1995) also sold well at the time. Vangelis composed the official anthem of the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in Korea and Japan. In his last twenty years, Vangelis collaborated with NASA and ESA on music projects Mythodea (1993), Rosetta (2016), and Juno to Jupiter (2021), his 23rd and final studio album. May 17, 2012: #DOTD: #RIP: Donna Summer, African American singer, songwriter. actress and beauty (b. December 31, 1948) #dies of lung cancer at her home in Naples, Florida, aged 63. Being a nonsmoker, Summer theorized that her cancer had been caused by inhaling toxic fumes and dust from the September 11 attacks in New York City; she was in her apartment near Ground Zero when the attacks occurred. However, some reports have instead attributed the cancer to Summer's smoking during her younger years, her continued exposure to second-hand smoking while performing in clubs well after she had quit, and a predisposition to this disease in the family. Summer was survived by her husband, Bruce Sudano, and her three daughters. Summer's funeral service was held in Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee, on the afternoon of May 23, 2012. The exact location and time of the service were kept private. Several hundred of Summer's friends and relatives attended the funeral, according to CNN. The funeral was a private ceremony, and cameras were not allowed inside the church. She is interred in the Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens cemetery in Nashville. LaDonna Adrian Gaines, widely known by her stage name based on her married name Donna Summer, was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She gained prominence during the disco era of the late 1970s and became known as the "Queen of Disco", while her music gained a global following. While influenced by the counterculture of the 1960s, Summer became the lead singer of a psychedelic rock band named Crow and moved to New York City. Joining a touring version of the musical Hair, she left New York and spent several years living, acting and singing in Europe, where she met music producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte in Munich, where they recorded influential disco hits such as "Love to Love You Baby" and "I Feel Love", marking her breakthrough into an international career. Summer returned to the United States in 1975, and other hits such as "Last Dance", "MacArthur Park", "Heaven Knows", "Hot Stuff", "Bad Girls", "Dim All the Lights", "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" (duet with Barbra Streisand) and "On the Radio" followed. Summer earned a total of 42 hit singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 in her lifetime, with 14 of those reaching the top-ten. She claimed a top 40 hit every year between 1975 and 1984, and from her first top-ten hit in 1976, to the end of 1982, she had 12 top-ten hits (10 were top-five hits), more than any other act during that time period. She returned to the Hot 100's top-five in 1983, and claimed her final top-ten hit in 1989 with "This Time I Know It's for Real". She was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and charted four number-one singles in the US within a 12-month period. She also charted two number-one singles on the R & B Singles chart in the US and a number-one single in the United Kingdom. Her most recent Hot 100 hit came in 1999 with "I Will Go with You (Con Te Partiro)". While her fortunes on the Hot 100 waned through those decades, Summer remained a force on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart over her entire career. Summer died on May 17, 2012, from lung cancer, at her home in Naples, Florida. She sold over 100 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She won five Grammy Awards. In her obituary in The Times, she was described as the "undisputed queen of the Seventies disco boom" who reached the status of "one of the world's leading female singers."
