April 26: Audubon Day: -- April 26, 1785:
#BOTD: #HBD! John James Audubon, French-African American
self-trained artist, naturalist, and ornithologist (d. January 27,
1851) is #born Jean-Jacques Rabin in Les Cayes in the French
colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) on his father's sugarcane
plantation, the son of Lieutenant Jean Audubon, a French naval
officer and privateer, and his chambermaid mistress of French and
African descent Jeanne Rabine, after whom he was named. We greatly
admire people working towards conservation activities and this
factors into our celebrations of Audubon Day on April 26 each
year. Held to commemorate the birth of John James Audubon, this
day also recognizes the crucial work done by The National Audubon
Society. John James Audubon combined interests in art and
ornithology turned into a plan to make a complete pictorial record
of all the bird species of North America. He was notable for his
extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for
his detailed illustrations, which depicted the birds in their
natural habitats. His major work, a color-plate book titled The
Birds of America (1827-1839), is considered one of the finest
ornithological works ever completed. Audubon is also known for
identifying 25 new species. He is the eponym of the National
Audubon Society, and his name adorns a large number of towns,
neighborhoods, and streets across the United States. Dozens of
scientific names first published by Audubon are still in use by
the scientific community. Audubon made some excursions out West
where he hoped to record Western species he had missed, but his
health began to fail. In 1848, he manifested signs of senility or
possibly dementia from what is now called Alzheimer's disease, his
"noble mind in ruins". He died at his family home in
northern Manhattan, aged 65. Audubon is buried in the graveyard at
the Church of the Intercession in the Trinity Church Cemetery and
Mausoleum at 155th Street and Broadway in Manhattan, near his
home. An imposing monument in his honor was erected at the
cemetery, which is now recognized as part of the Heritage Rose
District of NYC. Audubon's final work dealt with mammals; he
prepared The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America (1845-1849) in
collaboration with his good friend Rev. John Bachman of
Charleston, South Carolina, who supplied much of the scientific
text. His son, John Woodhouse Audubon, drew most of the plates.
The work was completed by Audubon's sons, and the second volume
was published posthumously in 1851. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

April 26: Remember Your First Kiss Day:
-- Almost everyone has a first kiss story. This day serves to
remind us of who we had our first kiss with, where we had it, what
led to it, how we enjoyed it, and what transpired afterward. It
also allows us to revisit the past and rekindle our relationships,
or remember that special person who first made us feel lost in
romance. However, the first kiss might not always be as romantic
as many proclaim. Some loathe it due to certain circumstances that
surrounded the moment. It is not known where or when the holiday,
Remember Your First Kiss Day was created nor is its creator known.
However, millions of people in the U.S. relish the celebration of
the day. The day takes the mind on a journey back in time to that
special or maybe awkward moment where we had our first kiss, the
person we had it with, and how it all happened. It is believed
that people rarely forget their first time doing certain things in
life. The first kiss, like other things, can be an everlasting
memory just like any other big life achievement. Maybe that is why
almost everyone can remember 90% details of their first kiss. The
act of kissing has been around for millions of years. Some believe
that it unconsciously originated from mothers feeding their babies
with their mouths. Others argue that it emanated from ancient
India. Accordingly, four major literary texts of the Vedic
Sanskrit explained an early form of kissing as rubbing and
pressing noses together in 1500 B.C. Half a millennium later, lip
kissing was mentioned in the epic poem 'Mahabharata,' indicating
that someone went the extra mile to experiment with kissing with
the lips rather than pressing noses. Around 326 B.C., kissing
began to go beyond India, spread by the armies of Alexander the
Great into parts of Asia. The act of kissing became overwhelmingly
popular in Europe in the middle ages. Everyone in Europe was
kissing everyone. In 1896, a film titled "The Kiss"
featuring May Irwin and John Rice showed for the first time, a
repeated act of kissing, an act many described as disgusting. So,
do you still remember your first kiss? Can you recall how it all
happened? Pour it all out today! On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

April 26: World Burlesque Day: -- An
annual tribute to a unique art form. Burlesque dancing shows have
dramatic and musical performances by women that is both comedic
and provocative. World Burlesque Day is devoted to the celebration
and elevation of burlesque and provides a way of boosting the art
form's global visibility. For those who are not aware of what
burlesque is, it is a form of entertainment that is similar to a
cabaret. It was extremely popular during the early part of the
20th century. It is a glamorous, satirical, raunchy, and
irreverent performance that would consist of strippers, comedians,
and a master of ceremonies. World Burlesque Day was created in
2022 by Sapphira, a showgirl, author, and mental-health
ambassador. She created World Burlesque Day as a way of bringing
together people who love everything to do with burlesque. She also
wanted this holiday to serve as a platform for people to share
their stories and, in so doing, encourage others to find their own
sense of style and freedom through burlesque. Sapphira has been a
showgirl since 2004 and claims that burlesque has helped her to
overcome mental health problems and believes that it can give
confidence to others who are struggling too. She chose April 26 as
the day to celebrate World Burlesque Day to commemorate 50 years
since the passing of Gypsy Rose Lee who was one of the greatest
burlesque performers in the 1930s. Today, burlesque has evolved
into neo-burlesque, which is based on traditional burlesque.
Although burlesque has changed throughout the years, people still
enjoy all types of burlesque. On World Burlesque Day, burlesque
lovers from all over the world come together to celebrate the
different activities designed by the founder to showcase the art
form and bring new performers into the fold. On Sale @ 15% Off

April 26: National Garage Day: -- The
garage is an essential part of every household. It's evolved to
become more than just a storage space. This practical space
provides people the chance to practice their hobbies, make D.I.Y.
projects, store their collectibles, or even entertain guests. This
fun holiday is your reminder to declutter your garage and take the
time to reflect on all the hobbies you abandoned and the projects
you've been meaning to finish. Reclaim your space to accommodate
your needs! Encourage productivity and inspire yourself by
spending the day engaging in creative projects. Garages are an
important feature of the home, and they can be very versatile. For
many, this is the place to start new projects or pursue their
messier hobbies that they can't bring into their house. This
holiday was started to motivate people and encourage creativity.
The company Garage Condos, LLC invented this new holiday in 2020.
First, it's important to reflect on how garages became part of
everyday life. Cars and garages are now found in nearly every
home, making it difficult to imagine a time without them, but both
are quite recent inventions. The first motor car was invented in
1886 by Karl Benz, an evolution of wagons and carriages led by
horses. People only started driving cars in the early 1900s, with
the first driver's license being issued in 1903. After that, cars
became much more accessible, and many city-dwellers had them.
These large and expensive objects needed to be stored safely. At
first, car owners parked their vehicles in carriage houses and
stables, but this wasn't very practical. This need gave way to a
new invention, the garage. The first garage door was a result of a
miscalculation by Henry Ford. Ford was working in a shed on his
quadricycle - a four-wheeled bicycle that functioned without a
horse. He soon realized that the vehicle was too big to take out,
and he had to knock down a part of the shed's brick wall. In its
place, he installed what could be considered the earliest version
of a garage door. Many variations were invented, but none caught
on. In 1921, C.G. Johnson invented the overhead door, which is
still in use today. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

April 26: Alien Day: -- A day accompanied
by celebrations aimed not only to appreciate science fiction but
also educate people about it. The day provides science fiction
lovers with the opportunity to partake in everything sci-fi. It is
spiced up by organizing sci-fi competitions for interested persons
to win alien collectible and wearable prizes. Did you know that
"Blade Runner," rated by critics as the most influential
sci-fi movie ever, was directed by Ridley Scott? Ridley Scott also
directed the famous movie titled "Alien," where Alien
Day draws its inspiration. Alien Day is a widely acclaimed holiday
sponsored by the film production company, 20th Century Fox. It was
first celebrated in 2015 as an unofficial holiday in Brooklyn, New
York, by a group of folks who aimed to glorify the world of
science fiction. In 2016, it became even more organized and
recognized as trivia competitions, comic books, alien video games,
clothes, and collectible prizes became parts of events marking its
celebration. The creation of the holiday was inspired by Ridley
Scott's movie "Alien" which was released in 1979. The
choice of April 26 as the date of celebration does not reflect the
day the movie was released; rather, it was adopted from the
fictional name of a planet where aliens were discovered in the
movie. The year 2016 held a special place in the alien world
because it corresponded with the 30th anniversary of the release
of the 'Alien' narrations. The reason behind the observation of
Alien Day is to reach out to many people across the globe and get
them to appreciate the extraordinary world of aliens in style. Do
you know that you can learn a lot about science and technology in
science fiction movies? "Blade Runner" is a sci-fi movie
you will not regret watching. The history of the "Alien"
movie is incomplete without Ridley Scott. Sir Ridley Scott, born
November 30, 1937, is an English film director and producer. He is
notable for his sci-fi movies collections such as "Alien"
released in 1979, "Blade Runner" in 1982, "The
Martian" in 2015, and the 2001 war film "Black Hawk
Down," among many others. The British director is an
authority in the making of sci-fi movies. On Sale @ 15% Off

April 26: Richter Scale Day: -- We might
not yet know who founded this day, but we commemorate this day to
honor the birth of the founder of the Richter scale - the very
first instrument used to measure earthquakes - Charles Richter.
While the founders of this holiday are still undercover, we know
this day is meant to honor the man who taught the world to measure
earthquakes - American seismologist and physicist Charles Francis
Richter. Richter was born on a farm in Ohio and moved to Los
Angeles with his mother when he was a teenager. He attended the
University of Southern California, going on to study physics at
Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology,
where he attained his Ph.D. on the subject. While at the
California Institute of Technology, Richter was deeply impressed
and inspired by a paper written on shallow- and deep earthquakes
by Japanese seismologist Kiyoo Wadati. Along with German-born Beno
Gutenberg, Richter went on to develop the Richter scale of
measurement while they were both at the California Institute of
Technology. This scale quantified the energy released during an
earthquake on a scale of 0 to 10. Each number on the scale
represents an earthquake 10 times stronger than the number before
it. For example, an earthquake with a magnitude of five is 10
times stronger (and releases more energy) than one with a
magnitude of four. The Richter scale became a universal standard
for the measurement of earthquakes. While other scales have been
developed since then, none of them have achieved the popularity of
the Richter scale. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

history of South Africa. The General elections were held between
26 and 29 April 1994. The election was conducted under the
direction of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), and
marked the culmination of the four-year process that ended
apartheid. Millions queued in lines over a four-day voting period.
Altogether 19,726,579 votes were counted and 193,081 were rejected
as invalid. As widely expected, the African National Congress
(ANC), whose slate incorporated the labour confederation COSATU
and the South African Communist Party, won a sweeping victory,
taking 62 percent of the vote, just short of the two-thirds
majority required to unilaterally amend the Interim Constitution.
As required by that document, the ANC formed a Government of
National Unity with the National Party and the Inkatha Freedom
Party, the two other parties that won more than 20 seats in the
National Assembly. The new National Assembly's first act was to
elect Nelson Mandela as President, making him the country's first
black chief executive. F.W. de Klerk became vice president. The

April 26: International Chernobyl
Disaster Remembrance Day: -- A day that forever remembers the
tragic day that The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, officially
named the Vladimir Lenin Nuclear Power Plant, experienced a
malfunction during a systems test. The malfunction led to the
release of massive amounts of radioactive material into the
surrounding environment. As a result, parts of Russia, Ukraine,
and Belarus were left unsafe, and a 30-kilometer radius around the
plant - the exclusion zone - uninhabitable. April 26 is a day that
forces us to remember what happened and consider the implications
of nuclear energy and the risks involved. Nuclear energy is a
fairly recent achievement for the human race, it boasts a powerful
array of unique benefits that make it an extremely desirable
material from which we can draw power. However, with great power
to transform the energy situation in the world, there are major
risks that need to be considered too. Much of what we know about
nuclear energy is related squarely to its destructive power and
nuclear bombs. However, once the development and perfection of
nuclear weaponry were well on their way, from about 1945 attention
began to shift towards its uses in the energy field. In 1951, on
December 20, E.B.R.-I became the first nuclear power plant that
could produce usable electricity through atomic fission. A minute
power generator in comparison to the nuclear power plants we
experience today, but the first of its kind. Nuclear energy, in
the beginning, was not widely criticized, and awareness was
limited, however in the 1970s and 1980s staunch opposition rose
against the construction and spread of nuclear power plants.
Construction on the Vladimir Lenin Nuclear Power Plant ended in
1977. However, the entire build project was riddled with failures,
defective building materials, and inadequate machinery to get the
job done, correctly and on par with international safety
standards. According to Prime Minister of the U.S.S.R. Nikolai
Ryzhkov, the disaster was inevitable. Although the immediate
destructive force of a nuclear bomb far outweighs that of a
nuclear plant meltdown, this is simply due to the controls in
place that attempt to negate that power, however, the
environmental impact that a compromised nuclear powerplant can
have on its surroundings is destructive and almost irreversible.
Today is a day that we spread awareness about the potentially
catastrophic danger that goes with Nuclear Power. On Sale @ 15%

Of The American Civil War, The Last Surrender Agreement Of The
Confederate States Of America (CSA), The Last Surrender Agreement
Of The Confederate State (C.S.), The Last Surrender Agreement Of
The Confederacy, The Last Surrender Agreement Of The South):
"Confederate Memorial Day": -- The largest and last
major Confederate field army surrender to the Union, the surrender
that effectively ended the American Civil War, occurs when
Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrenders his Army of
Tennessee, as well as all other remaining Confederate forces in
Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, to General
William Tecumseh Sherman at the Bennett Place, a poor former farm
and homestead near Durham, North Carolina. This surrender is
commemorated as Confederate Memorial Day (called Confederate
Heroes Day in Texas and Florida, and Confederate Decoration Day in
Tennessee), a holiday observed in several Southern U.S. states on
various dates since the end of the American Civil War. When
General Sherman started after Johnston on April 10, Johnston
retreated through Raleigh, North Carolina, abandoning the city on
April 12 before continuing westward along the North Carolina
Railroad to Hillsborough; he planned to surrender but thought that
the Confederacy could get better terms if he negotiated from a
position of strength. Johnston and Sherman met and negotiated
terms of surrender on April 17 and 18 at the Bennett Place near
Durham Station, North Carolina; Sherman not only accepted the
surrender of the Army of Tennessee but promised to recognize the
Confederate state governments. These terms were immediately
rejected by the Union government, forcing Sherman and Johnston to
negotiate a new agreement. The new terms of surrender, signed on
April 26, were modeled on the terms given at Appomattox Court
House and included not only the Army of Tennessee but also all
other Confederate forces in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and
North Carolina; the number of Confederate troops included in the
surrender totaled almost 90,000 men. Confederate Memorial Day is
currently an official state holiday in Alabama, Mississippi, South
Carolina and Texas (where state employees are entitled to a paid
day off work), while it is commemorated in Kentucky, Florida,
North Carolina, and Tennessee. It was also formerly recognized in
Missouri, Louisiana, and Virginia. In Georgia, a state holiday is
still observed on the 4th Monday in April; however, since 2016, it
is referred to simply as a "State Holiday". Several
states celebrate the date on or near April 26. Originally publicly
presented as a day to remember the estimated 258,000 Confederate
soldiers who died during the American Civil War, the holiday was
promoted by Southern state legislatures after the Civil War to
reinforce and symbolize white supremacy in the South. During the
1950s and 1960s, the holiday also served as symbol of resistance
against desegregation and black civil rights. The Southern Poverty
Law Center has condemned the holiday as part of a campaign of
"racial terror" on the part of white supremacists - "an
organized propaganda campaign, created to instill fear and ensure
the ongoing oppression of formerly enslaved people." Writers
and historians have pointed out that the holiday's official
recognition by states often coincided with the height of Jim Crow
racism around the United States, decades after the war ended. The
holiday originated at a local level by Ladies' Memorial
Associations to care for the graves of Confederate dead. In 1866,
General John A. Logan commanded the posts of Grand Army Of The
Republic to strew flowers on the graves of Union soldiers, which
observance later became the national Memorial Day. In a speech to
veterans in Salem, Illinois, on July 4, 1866, Logan referred to
the various dates of observance adopted in the South for the
practice, saying "traitors in the South have their gatherings
day after day, to strew garlands of flowers upon the graves of
Rebel soldiers..." #JosephEJohnston #WilliamTechumsehSherman

Aurelius, Roman emperor from 161 to 180, who ruled jointly with
his adoptive brother, Lucius Verus, until Verus' death in 169, and
jointly with his son, Commodus, from 177 till Aurelius' own death,
last of the so-called Five Good Emperors (d. March 17, 180) is
#born Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus in Rome, Italy. He was a
practitioner of Stoicism, and his untitled writing, commonly known
as Meditations, is a significant source of the modern
understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. It is considered by
many commentators to be one of the greatest works of philosophy.
During his reign, the Roman Empire defeated a revitalized Parthian
Empire in the East: Aurelius' general Avidius Cassius sacked the
capital Ctesiphon in 164. In central Europe, Aurelius fought the
Marcomanni, Quadi, and Sarmatians with success during the
Marcomannic Wars, although the threat of the Germanic peoples
began to represent a troubling reality for the Empire. A revolt in
the East led by Avidius Cassius failed to gain momentum and was
suppressed immediately. Marcus Aurelius died of unknown causes in
his military quarters either in the city of Vindobona (province of
Pannonia Superior, today Vienna) or near Sirmium (province of
Pannonia Inferior, modern Sremska Mitrovica) at the age of 58. He
was immediately deified and his ashes were returned to Rome, where
they rested in Hadrian's mausoleum (modern Castel Sant'Angelo)
until the Visigoth sack of the city in 410. His campaigns against
Germans and Sarmatians were also commemorated by a column and a
temple built in Rome. His death is considered to be the end of the
Pax Romana, a roughly 200-year-long period of Roman history which
is identified as a golden age of increased and sustained Roman
imperialism, relative peace and order, prosperous stability,
hegemonic power, and regional expansion, and the increasing
instability in the west that followed has traditionally been seen
as the beginning of the eventual fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Delacroix, French painter, lithographer and muralist, Romantic

French Romantic school, who together with his rival and enemy of
Romanticsim Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Delacroix is considered
one of the last old Masters of painting and is one of the few who
was ever photographed (d. August 13, 1863) is #born Ferdinand
Victor Eugene Delacroixat Charenton-Saint-Maurice in
Ile-de-France, near Paris. His mother was Victoire Oeben, the
daughter of the cabinetmaker Jean-Francois Oeben. There are
medical reasons to believe that Eugene's legitimate father,
Charles-Francois Delacroix, was not able to procreate at the time
of Eugene's conception. Talleyrand (Charles-Maurice de
Talleyrand-Perigord, 1st Prince Of Benevento, then Prince Of
Talleyrand, French secularized clergyman, statesman and leading
diplomat) considered himself to be Eugene's real father, as he was
a friend of the family and successor of Charles Delacroix as
Minister of Foreign Affairs, and resumbled the adult Eugene in
appearance and character. After assuming his office as foreign
minister, Talleyrand dispatched Delacroix to The Hague in the
capacity of French ambassador to the then Batavian Republic.
Delacroix at that time suffered from erectile dysfunction, and
when he returned to Paris in early September 1797, he found his
wife pregnant. Talleyrand went on to assist Eugene in the form of
numerous anonymous commissions. Throughout his career as a
painter, he was protected by Talleyrand, who served successively
the Restoration and king Louis-Philippe, and ultimately as
ambassador of France in Great Britain, and later by Charles
Auguste Louis Joseph, duc de Morny, half-brother of Napoleon III
and speaker of the French House of Commons. His legitimate father,
Charles Delacroix, died in 1805, and his mother in 1814, leaving
16-year-old Eugene an orphan. Eugene had three much older
siblings: Charles-Henri Delacroix (1779-1845) rose to the rank of
General in Napoleon's army, Henriette (1780-1827) married the
diplomat Raymond de Verninac Saint-Maur (1762-1822), and Henri
born six years later was killed at the Battle Of Friedland during
the Napoleonic War Of The Fourth Coalition. As a painter and
muralist, Delacroix's use of expressive brushstrokes and his study
of the optical effects of colour profoundly shaped the work of the
Impressionists, while his passion for the exotic inspired the
artists of the Symbolist movement. A fine lithographer, Delacroix
illustrated various works of William Shakespeare, the Scottish
author Walter Scott, and the German author Johann Wolfgang von
Goethe. In contrast to the Neoclassical perfectionism of his chief
rival Ingres, Delacroix took for his inspiration the art of Rubens
and painters of the Venetian Renaissance, with an attendant
emphasis on colour and movement rather than clarity of outline and
carefully modelled form. Dramatic and romantic content
characterized the central themes of his maturity, and led him not
to the classical models of Greek and Roman art, but to travel in
North Africa, in search of the exotic. Friend and spiritual heir
to Theodore Gericault, Delacroix was also inspired by Lord Byron,
with whom he shared a strong identification with the "forces
of the sublime", of nature in often violent action. However,
Delacroix was given to neither sentimentality nor bombast, and his
Romanticism was that of an individualist. In the words of
Baudelaire, "Delacroix was passionately in love with passion,
but coldly determined to express passion as clearly as possible."
Victor Hugo as young man declared his own life's mission as
"Delacroix or Bust!". Eugene Delacroix died of a throat
infection at his home in Paris, France, aged 65. He is buried at

(1801-1805) (The Tripolitan War, The Barbary Coast War): The
Battle Of Derna (1805): -- United States Marines captured the
Tripolitan city of Derna (The "shores of Tripoli" part
of the Marines' Hymn) under the command of First Lieutenant
Presley O'Bannon. The Battle Of Derna at Derna, Cyrenaica, was the
decisive victory in April-May 1805 of a mercenary Berber army
recruited and led by United States Marines under the command of
U.S. Army Lieutenant William Eaton, diplomatic Consul to Tripoli,
and U.S. Marine Corps First Lieutenant Presley Neville O'Bannon.
The battle involved a forced 521-mile march through the North
African desert from Alexandria, Egypt, to the eastern port city of
Derna, Libya, which was defended by a much larger force. The
Battle Of Derna was the first land battle of the United States on
foreign soil (after the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783))
and was the decisive action of the First Barbary War (1801-1805).
The First Barbary War (1801-1805), also known as the Tripolitanian
War and the Barbary Coast War, was the first of two Barbary Wars,
in which the United States and Sweden fought against the four
North African states known collectively as the "Barbary
States". Three of these were nominal provinces of the Ottoman
Empire, but in practice autonomous: Tripoli, Algiers, and Tunis.
The fourth was the independent Sultanate of Morocco. The cause of
the U.S. participation was pirates from the Barbary States seizing
American merchant ships and holding the crews for ransom,
demanding the U.S. pay tribute to the Barbary rulers. United
States President Thomas Jefferson refused to pay this tribute.
Sweden had been at war with the Tripolitans since 1800. On 10 May
1801, the Pasha of Tripoli declared war on the U.S., not through
any formal written documents but in the customary Barbary manner
of cutting down the flagstaff in front of the U.S. Consulate.
Although Congress never voted on a formal declaration of war, they
did respond by authorizing President Jefferson to instruct the
commanders of armed American vessels to seize all vessels and
goods of the Pasha of Tripoli "and also to cause to be done
all such other acts of precaution or hostility as the state of war
will justify." In 1802, in response to Jefferson's request
for authority to deal with the pirates, Congress passed "An
act for the protection of commerce and seamen of the United States
against the Tripolitan cruisers", authorizing the President
to "_employ such of the armed vessels of the United States as
may be judged requisite_ for protecting effectually the commerce
and seamen thereof on the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean and
adjoining seas." The U.S Navy went unchallenged on the sea,
but still the question remained undecided. Jefferson pressed the
issue the following year, with an increase in military force and
deployment of many of the navy's best ships to the region
throughout 1802. Argus, Chesapeake, Constellation, Constitution,
Enterprise, Intrepid, Philadelphia and Syren all saw service
during the war under the overall command of Preble. Throughout
1803, Preble set up and maintained a blockade of the Barbary ports
and executed a campaign of raids and attacks against the cities'
fleets. In October 1803, Tripoli's fleet captured USS Philadelphia
intact after the frigate ran aground on a reef while patrolling
Tripoli harbor. Efforts by the Americans to float the ship while
under fire from shore batteries and Tripolitan Naval units failed.
The ship, her captain, William Bainbridge, and all officers and
crew were taken ashore and held as hostages. Philadelphia was
turned against the Americans and anchored in the harbor as a gun
battery. On the night of 16 February 1804, Lieutenant Stephen
Decatur led a small detachment of U.S. Marines aboard the captured
Tripolitan ketch rechristened USS Intrepid, thus deceiving the
guards on Philadelphia to float close enough to board her.
Decatur's men stormed the ship and overpowered the Tripolitan
sailors. With fire support from the American warships, the Marines
set fire to Philadelphia, denying her use by the enemy. The
"Marines' Hymn", in part inspired by the Battle Of
Derna, is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps,
introduced by the first Director of USMC Band, Francesco Maria
Scala. It is the oldest official song in the United States Armed
Forces. The "Marines' Hymn" is typically sung at the
position of attention as a gesture of respect. However, the third
verse is also used as a toast during formal events, such as the
birthday ball and other ceremonies. In the aftermath of the Battle
Of Derna, Eaton was furious over what he called a 'sell-out'
between State Department diplomat Tobias Lear and the bey. Hamet
returned to Egypt, and the mercenaries were never fully paid. On

April 26, 1886: #BOTD: #HBD! Ma Rainey,
influential African American blues singer and early blues
recording artist (d. December 22, 1939) is #born Gertrude
Pridgett; she is said to have been #born on this date in Columbus,
Georgia, but there is uncertainty about the date. Some sources
indicate that she was born in 1882, while most sources assert that
she was born, as she herself said, on April 26, 1886 (beginning
with the 1910 census, taken April 25, 1910). However, the 1900
census indicates that she was born in September 1882 in Alabama,
and researchers Bob Eagle and Eric LeBlanc suggest that her
birthplace was in Russell County, Alabama. Dubbed the "Mother
of the Blues", Ma Rainey (nee Pridgett) bridged earlier
vaudeville and the authentic expression of southern blues,
influencing a generation of blues singers. She began performing as
a teenager and became known as "Ma" Rainey after her
marriage to Will "Pa" Rainey in 1904. They toured with
the Rabbit Foot Minstrels and later formed their own group, Rainey
and Rainey, Assassinators of the Blues. Her first recording was
made in 1923. In the following five years, she made over 100
recordings, including "Bo-Weevil Blues" (1923),
"Moonshine Blues" (1923), "See See Rider Blues"
(1924), "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" (1927), and "Soon
This Morning" (1927). Rainey was known for her powerful vocal
abilities, energetic disposition, majestic phrasing, and a
"moaning" style of singing. Her qualities are present
and most evident in her early recordings "Bo-Weevil Blues"
and "Moonshine Blues". Rainey recorded with Thomas
Dorsey and Louis Armstrong, and she toured and recorded with the
Georgia Jazz Band. She toured until 1935, when she largely retired
from performing and continued as a theater impresario in her
hometown of Columbus, Georgia, until her death four years later.
Ma Rainey died of a heart attack in her hometown of Columbus,
Georgia, aged 53. She is buried at Porterdale Cemetery in

April 26, 1894: #BOTD: Rudolf Hess,
prominent Egyptian-German politician in Nazi Germany (d. August
17, 1987) is #born Rudolf Walter Richard Hess in Alexandria,
Egypt. He was appointed Deputy Fuehrer to Adolf Hitler in 1933,
and was a member of Hitler's inner circle. He served in this
position until 1941, when he flew solo to Scotland in an attempt
to negotiate peace with the United Kingdom during World War II. He
was taken prisoner and eventually was convicted of crimes against
peace, serving a life sentence until his suicide. Hess enlisted as
an infantryman at the outbreak of World War I. He was wounded
several times over the course of the war and was awarded the Iron
Cross, 2nd class, in 1915. Shortly before the war ended, Hess
enrolled to train as an aviator, but he saw no action in this
role. He left the armed forces in December 1918 with the rank of
Leutnant der Reserve. In 1919, Hess enrolled in the University of
Munich, where he studied geopolitics under Karl Haushofer, a
proponent of the concept of Lebensraum ("living space"),
which later became one of the pillars of Nazi Party (NSDAP)
ideology. Hess joined the NSDAP on July 1, 1920, and was at
Hitler's side on November 8, 1923 for the Beer Hall Putsch, a
failed Nazi attempt to seize control of the government of Bavaria.
Whilst serving time in jail for this attempted coup, Hess helped
Hitler write his book, Mein Kampf, which became a foundation of
the political platform of the NSDAP. After the Nazi seizure of
power in 1933, Hess was appointed Deputy Fuhrer of the NSDAP and
received a post in Hitler's cabinet. He was the third most
powerful man in Germany, behind only Hitler and Hermann Goering.
In addition to appearing on Hitler's behalf at speaking
engagements and rallies, Hess signed into law much of the
legislation, including the Nuremberg Laws of 1935, which stripped
the Jews of Germany of their rights in the lead-up to the
Holocaust. Hess continued to be interested in aviation, learning
to fly the more advanced aircraft that were coming into
development at the start of World War II. On May 10, 1941 he
undertook a solo flight to Scotland, where he hoped to arrange
peace talks with the Duke of Hamilton, whom he believed to be
prominent in opposition to the British government. Hess was
immediately arrested on his arrival and was held in British
custody until the end of the war, when he was returned to Germany
to stand trial in the Nuremberg Trials of major war criminals in
1946. During much of the trial, he claimed to be suffering from
amnesia, but later admitted this was a ruse. Hess was convicted of
crimes against peace and conspiracy with other German leaders to
commit crimes and was transferred to Spandau Prison in 1947, where
he served a life sentence. Repeated attempts by family members and
prominent politicians to win him early release were blocked by the
Soviet Union. Still in custody in Spandau, Rudolf Hess died in a
summer house at the age of 93 that had been set up in the prison
garden as a reading room; he had hanged himself using an extension
cord strung over a window latch. A short note to his family was
found in his pocket, thanking them for all that they had done. The
Four Powers released a statement on September 17 ruling the death
a suicide. He was initially buried at a secret location to avoid
media attention or demonstrations by Nazi sympathisers, but his
body was re-interred in a family plot at Wunsiedel on March 17,
1988. He was the last of the major Nuremberg war criminals to die.

The Weimar Republic (The German Reich, The German Republic): The
1925 German Presidential Election: -- In a runoff election, Paul
von Hindenburg defeats Wilhelm Marx in the second round of the
German presidential election to become the first directly elected
head of state (President Of The Reich (Reichsprasident)) of the
Weimar Republic. The election began on March 29; 1925, with the
runoff on April 26. The first President, Friedrich Ebert, who had
died on February 28 1925, had been elected indirectly, by the
National Assembly, but the Weimar Constitution required that his
successor be elected by the "whole German people". Paul
von Hindenburg was elected as the second president of Germany in
the second round of voting. Hindenburg was the candidate of a
broad coalition of the political right. Many on the right hoped
that once in power he would destroy Weimar democracy from the
inside and restore the pre-Weimar status quo. The two other
candidates who were believed to have a chance of winning were Otto
Braun of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Wilhelm Marx of the
Centre Party. Both the SPD and Centre were members of the Weimar
Coalition, the group of parties regarded as most committed to the
Weimar system. Only Marx proceeded to the second round of the
election. The election was important because of the turbulent
times in which it occurred and because, under the Weimar
Constitution, the head of state wielded considerable power.
Hindenburg would be again returned in the 1932 election and would
play an important role during the rise to power of the Nazi Party.
However, many of Hindenburg's 1925 backers were subsequently
disappointed. Although in the years that followed his election
many questioned the constitutionality of certain of his actions,
Hindenburg never attempted to overthrow the Weimar constitution
outright. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

April 26, 1925: First Publications: --
Franz Kafka's novel The Trial (German: Der Process, later Der
Prozess), written by Kafka between 1914 and 1915, is published
posthumously. One of his best-known works, it tells the story of
Josef K., a man arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible
authority, with the nature of his crime revealed neither to him
nor to the reader. Heavily influenced by Dostoevsky's Crime and
Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, Kafka even went so far as
to call Dostoevsky a blood relative. Like Kafka's other novels,
The Trial was never completed, although it does include a chapter
which appears to bring the story to an intentionally abrupt
ending. After Kafka's death in 1924 his friend and literary
executor Max Brod edited the text for publication by Verlag Die
Schmiede. The original manuscript is held at the Museum of Modern
Literature, Marbach am Neckar, Germany. The first English-language
translation, by Willa and Edwin Muir, was published in 1937. In
1999, the book was listed in Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century
and as No. 2 of the Best German Novels of the Twentieth Century.

town of Guernica is bombed by warplanes of the Nazi German
Luftwaffe's Condor Legion and the Fascist Italian Aviazione
Legionaria, under the code name Operation Rugen. It was carried
out at the behest of Francisco Franco's nationalist government.
After destroying the town in a three hour bombing raid, the planes
machine-gunned fleeing citizens. The town was being used as a
communications center behind the frontline. The operation opened
the way to Franco's capture of the city of Bilbao and his victory
in northern Spain. The attack gained controversy because it
involved the bombing of civilians by a military air force. The
number of victims is still disputed; the Basque government
reported 1,654 people killed at the time, while local historians
identified 126 victims, later revised by the authors of the study
to 153. A British source used by the Air War College claims 400
civilians died. Soviet archives claim 800 deaths on 1 May 1937,
but this number may not include victims who later died of their
injuries in hospitals or whose bodies were discovered buried in
the rubble. The bombing is the subject of a famous anti-war
painting by Pablo Picasso, commissioned by the Spanish Republic.
It was also depicted in a woodcut by the German artist Heinz
Kiwitz, who was later killed fighting in the International
Brigades. The bombing shocked and inspired many other artists,
including a sculpture by Rene Iche, one of the first
electroacoustic music pieces by Patrick Ascione, a musical
composition by Renr-Louis Baron and poems by Paul Eluard (Victory
of Guernica), and Uys Krige (Nag van die Fascistiese Bomwerpers)

the use of the keyboard-guitar hybrid known as the keytar, best
known for his 1976 hit songs "Dream Weaver" and "Love
Is Alive" (d. September 4, 2023) is #born Gary Malcolm Wright
in Cresskill, New Jersey. A child actor, he made his TV debut at
the age of seven, on the show Captain Video and His Video Rangers,
filmed in New York City. He appeared in TV and radio commercials
before being offered a part in the 1954 Broadway production of the
musical Fanny. Wright played the role of Cesario, the son of
Fanny, who was played by future Brady Bunch matriarch Florence
Henderson. He spent two years with the production, during which he
performed with Henderson on The Ed Sullivan Show. Wright's
breakthrough album, The Dream Weaver (1975), came after he had
spent seven years in London as, alternately, a member of the
British blues rock band Spooky Tooth and a solo artist on A &
M Records. While in England, he played keyboards on former Beatle
George Harrison's triple album All Things Must Pass (1970), which
began a friendship that inspired the Indian religious themes and
spirituality inherent in Wright's subsequent songwriting. His work
from the late 1980s onwards embraced world music and the new age
genre, although none of his post-1976 releases matched the same
level of popularity as The Dream Weaver. Wright was a child actor
and performed on Broadway in the hit musical Fanny, before
studying medicine and then psychology in New York and Berlin
before establishing himself as a professional musician. After
meeting Chris Blackwell of Island Records in Europe, Wright moved
to London, where he helped establish Spooky Tooth as a popular
live act. He also served as the band's principal songwriter on
their recordings - among them, the well-regarded albums Spooky Two
(1969) and You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw (1973). His
solo album Footprint (1971), recorded with contributions from
Harrison, coincided with the formation of Wright's short-lived
band Wonderwheel, which included guitarist Mick Jones, later known
for his work with Foreigner. Also, during the early 1970s, Wright
played on notable recordings by B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo
Starr, Harry Nilsson, and Ronnie Spector, while his musical
association with Harrison endured until shortly before the
latter's death in 2001. Wright turned to film soundtrack work in
the early 1980s, including re-recording his most popular song,
"Dream Weaver", for the 1992 comedy Wayne's World.
Following Spooky Tooth's reunion tour in 2004, Wright performed
live frequently, either as a member of Starr's All-Starr Band,
with his own live band, or on subsequent Spooky Tooth reunions.
Wright's most recent solo albums, including Waiting to Catch the
Light (2008) and Connected (2010), have all been issued on his
Larklio record label. In 2014, Jeremy P. Tarcher published
Wright's autobiography, Dream Weaver: Music, Meditation, and My
Friendship with George Harrison. Wright died in Palos Verdes
Estates, California where he resided with his wife Rose, at the
age 80. Although no cause of death was officially reported when
Wright's death was first announced, he had been diagnosed with
Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's disease around six or seven
years earlier. His remains were cremated, and his cremains were

seize the company's Chicago offices because its chairman, Sewell
Avery, refused to settle the strike, as requested by the Roosevelt
administration because of its adverse effect on the delivery of
needed goods in wartime. Avery had refused to comply with a War
Labor Board order to recognize the CIO unions that called the
strike and institute the terms of a collective bargaining
agreement. Avery repeatedly opposed actions of Roosevelt's
National War Labor Board and opposed labor unions. He resisted
signing a contract after a union had won representation for 7,000
of Montgomery Ward's employees until twice ordered by Roosevelt.
Eight months later, with Montgomery Ward continuing to refuse to
recognize the unions and settle the strike, endangering the
delivery of essential goods, Roosevelt issued an executive order
to use emergency measures to remove him from office and
temporarily seize the company and all its propery nationwide,
citing the War Labor Disputes Act as well as his power under the
Constitution as commander-in-chief. Two National Guard men had to
pick him up by an arm each and carry him out of his office. Avery
yelled at the Attorney General, who had flown to meet with him and
try to avert a showdown, "To hell with the government, you...
New Dealer!". Sewell Avery was later implicated in the
so-called Business Plot to overthrow President Roosevelt in 1993.
Shortly before hearing began on November 20, 1934 before the
McCormack-Dickstein Committee (later known as the House
Un-American Activities Committee), in September of 1934, the newly
formed American Liberty League, made up of leaders and captains of
industry opposed to the president "fomenting class hatred"
and his handling of the Depression, released a statement that
dismissed claims made by Retired Marine Corps Major General
Smedley Butler that wealthy businessmen were plotting to create a
fascist veterans' organization with Butler as its leader and use
it in a coup d'etat to overthrow President Franklin D. Roosevelt..
Among the members of the ALL were Sewell Avery, the DuPonts, S.B.
Colgate, Alfred P. Sloan, former Secretary Of State Elihu Root and
John Raskob. Butler noticed Robert Sterling Clark's name on the
list, as well as Grayson M. P. Murphy, Gerald MacGuire's boss.
Also implicated in the plot was Al Smith, former New York governor
and 1928 Democratic presidential nominee, as well as Prescott
Bush, a banker, future Connecticut senator, and father to George
H. W. Bush and grandfather to George W. Bush. In 1945, Truman
ended the seizure when unions won an election to represent the

States dealing with the Korean side of the conference, and France,
the Viet Minh, the Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China,
the United States, the United Kingdom, and the future states being
made from French Indochina dealing with the Indochina side. The
Geneva Conference was intended to settle outstanding issues
resulting from the Korean War and the First Indochina War. The
part of the conference on the Korean question ended without
adopting any declarations or proposals, so is generally considered
less relevant. The Geneva Accords that dealt with the dismantling
of French Indochina proved to have long-lasting repercussions,
however. The crumbling of the French Empire in Southeast Asia
would create the eventual states of the Democratic Republic of
Vietnam (North Vietnam), the State of Vietnam (the future Republic
of Vietnam / South Vietnam), the Kingdom of Cambodia, and the
Kingdom of Laos. Diplomats from South Korea, North Korea, the
People's Republic Of China (PRC), the Union of Soviet Socialist
Republics (USSR), and the United States of America (US) dealt with
the Korean side of the Conference. For the Indochina side, the
Accords were between France, the Viet Minh, the USSR, the PRC, the
US, the United Kingdom, and the future states being made from
French Indochina. The agreement temporarily separated Vietnam into
two zones, a northern zone to be governed by the Viet Minh rebels,
and a southern zone to be governed by the State of Vietnam, then
headed by former emperor Bao Dai. A Conference Final Declaration,
issued by the British chairman of the conference, provided that a
general election be held by July 1956 to create a unified
Vietnamese state. Despite helping create the agreements, they were
not directly signed onto nor accepted by delegates of both the
State of Vietnam and the United States, decisions that were
ultimately to result in the Second Indochina War, otherwise known
as the Vietnam War. In addition, three separate ceasefire accords,
covering Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, were signed at the
conference. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

discovery on April 11 in Masan Harbor of the body of a high school
student, Kim Ju-yul, killed by a tear-gas shell in demonstrations
against the elections of March 1960. The body was found in the
harbor at Masan by a fisherman. Kim had been a student at Masan
Commercial High School who had disappeared during the Masan
rioting of March 15. Authorities announced that an autopsy
confirmed that the cause of his death was drowning, but many
rejected this explanation. Some protesters forced their way into
the hospital. They found that Kim's skull had been split by a 20
centimeter-long tear-gas grenade which had penetrated from Kim's
eyes to the back of his head, which indicated that the police had
shot the tear gas to an angle less than 45 degrees, which could be
fatal if shot directly at a person's face. Rhee's regime tried to
censor news of this incident, however the story was reported by
the Korean press along with a picture of Kim when his body was
first found, and delivered to the world through AP. This incident
shocked the nation and became the basis of a national movement
against electoral corruption on April 19. Masan erupted into three
days of spontaneous mass protests which led to further violent
clashes. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

The Ranger Program: Ranger 4: -- The dubious honor of being the
first spacecraft to impact the far side of the Moon is acquired by
NASA's Ranger 4 as its onboard computer failed, preventing the
deployment of its solar panels and the operation of its navigation
system, preventing it from returning any scientific data.
Nevertheless, it was the first spacecraft of the United States to
reach another celestial body, and the excellent performance of the
Atlas-Agena booster had also raised morale as it performed
flawlessly for the first time. Ranger 4, launched from Cape
Canaveral Launch Complex 12 (LC-12) atop a Atlas LV-3 Agena-B
rocket at 20:50:00 UTC, was virtually identical in design to
Ranger 3, and was designed to transmit pictures of the lunar
surface to Earth stations during a period of 10 minutes of flight
prior to crashing upon the Moon, to rough-land a seismometer
capsule on the Moon, to collect gamma-ray data in flight, to study
radar reflectivity of the lunar surface, and to continue testing
of the Ranger program for development of lunar and interplanetary
spacecraft. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

Democracy Movement, The Tiananmen Square Incident, The Tiananmen

People's Daily publishes the April 26 Editorial which inflames the
nascent Tiananmen Square protests, leading the following day to
the The April 27 Demonstrations, massive student-led protests
which occured in response to the editorial. The April 26
Editorial, the first authoritative document from the top
leadership on the growing movement, defined the student movement
as a destabilizing anti-party revolt that should be resolutely
opposed at all levels of society. It was widely interpreted as
having communicated the party's position of "no-tolerance"
to student protesters and their sympathizers. The content of the
editorial incited the largest student protest of the movement thus
far in Beijing: 50,000-200,000 students marched through the
streets of Beijing before finally breaking through police lines
into Tiananmen Square. #April26Editorial #April27Demonstrations
