March 21: National Teenager Day: -- A
yearly celebration of anyone between the ages of 13 and 19, and
this is because when you spell the age out it ends with the word
'teen.' Teenagers are going through a lot as they are
transitioning from childhood to adulthood and experience a lot of
changes physical, emotional, and psychological. This is the phase
that they discover who they are and what they want to be known
for. National Teenager Day is a day set aside for teenagers to
know how important and valued they are and to give society a
chance to better understand them. National Teenager Day was
established to create opportunities for teenagers to discover
themselves and know who they are, and learn the best way they
would want to portray themselves to other people. Many teenagers
are referred to as rude, disrespectful and problematic but it is
not always so. Deep down they are just confused and overwhelmed by
the changes they are experiencing and they just want to be loved
and understood. Everything about them is changing, their bodies
are changing, their responsibilities are changing, their position
in society is changing as they are no longer perceived as children
but as adults, and even their brains are changing. In a teenager's
brain, there is a lot of growth and development, which is
primarily due to the removal of unused connections in the gray
matter (the part of the brain that is used to think and process
information) and the strengthening of new connections that will
make the brain more efficient. This process starts in the back of
the brain and progresses to the front, where the prefrontal cortex
is produced last. The prefrontal cortex is an important portion of
the brain that is responsible for decision-making, planning,
thinking, and problem-solving. Since the prefrontal cortex
develops last, teenagers have to rely on the 'amygdala,' which is
the part of the brain that controls emotional reactions. This is
the major reason for teenagers' sometimes unruly behavior. They
are not using the right part of the brain to think and make
decisions instead they are using the emotional part which is
responsible for their impulsive, aggressive, and instinctive
behavior. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

March 21: National Flower Day: --
National Flower Day is on March 21 every year, right after the
first official spring day. Flowers in spring have that
extraordinary quality that words can't do justice to. We can
practically sniff everything beautiful about spring - that
unmistakable scent of hope and renewed energy. Colorful buds and
petals, slowly peek their heads up to meet the sun. Flowers
perfectly embody the emotions associated with spring. Gifting
flowers is always a good idea. Few things can uplift spirits the
way flowers do. Do you want to make someone feel special? Mark an
occasion? Or perhaps need a mood-uplift yourself? Say what you
need to say with flowers, today and always. The earliest
connection between flowers and their importance to humans dates
back to the paleolithic age with the discovery of flower fossils.
Similarly, gifting flowers has always been central to life and
culture. Across civilizations, flowers would feature prominently
in ancient myths and stories. The Ancient Greeks revered flowers
and associated them with several Gods. Flowers have bloomed on
Earth and in our hearts throughout history as we know it. They
bring an extra spring to our steps. Add color to mundane days.
Flowers can convey love, joy, and strength through every season or
reason. Their fragrance and beauty bring cheer to anyone's day.
National Flower Day in March reminds us to pause and appreciate
nature's art. The holiday is perfect for planting more flowers.
You could gift flowers to someone or even yourself. It's a great
day for a long stroll in the park or a short hike. To stop and
smell the roses, tulips, or camellias. As you soak in pops of
color in gardens everywhere, it's hard not to radiate the same
joy. If you've been dreaming of spring blooms throughout the
winters, today's perfect to prep for spring gardening. This
special day helps us get ready for warm weather. The perfect
pick-me-up after a long, dreary winter. Today's excellent for
getting our gardens ready for spring. National Flower Day is also
an excuse to celebrate big moments and small ones. Gift flowers to
someone you love or to yourself as a personal pat on the back. On

March 21: Spring Fairy Fun Day: -- When a
holiday has fairies and spring involved, you know the day is
happiness guaranteed. Today celebrates the lightness of spring and
its mythical fairies. The idea is to sprinkle a bit of magic
wherever you go - become the fairy that you or everyone else
needs. Put on a flowy dress. Lie on the grass. Gift flowers to all
your friends. Play some favorite records and dance, even if it's
in your living room. The essence of springtime is good vibes, so
indulge in whatever brings your soul joy. We don't know who
founded Spring Fairy Fun Day. Our research says the day is a
celebration of all things spring-related. The magic of nature
inspires many poets, storytellers, and bards. Different seasons
can evoke an equally different range of emotions. Springtime, in
particular, is always beautiful! When the world wakes up from
winter slumber to new life. There's hope and renewed energy in the
air - a buzz of activity and adrenaline. Each flower, bud, and
blade of grass symbolizes exciting possibilities. How did fairies
come into the picture? Good question. Just as animals, birds, and
humans welcome the arrival of spring, the fairy folk are
supposedly celebrating too. According to legend, the spring fairy
heralds the arrival of spring and the end of winter. She's the
first of the seasonal fairies to arrive in the forest. As the
spring fairy flies past, trees and flowers swing in happiness -
shaking off any remnants of snow. A band of merry spring animals
follows the pixie through the woods. They're bleary-eyed from
winter slumber, but happy to be finally awake. Whether you believe
in fairies or not, there's no denying the magic of spring - a
season of new beginnings and lightness. Channel your innerspring
fairy today. Sprinkle some magic everywhere. Paint, draw, or
create a work of art. Fill empty nooks in the house with flowers.
Start a project you've always dreamt of doing - perhaps a class, a
new job, or an adventure overseas. There's no specific way to
celebrate the day except by bringing joy to yourself and others
around you. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

March 21: World Day Of Glaciers: --
Glaciers: Guardians of Earth's future! Glaciers are nature's
frozen sentinels, vast rivers of ice and snow that carve the
Earth, silently bearing witness to the passage of time and the
shifting rhythms of our planet. They are essential to Earth's
ecosystem, acting as critical freshwater reservoirs and indicators
of the planet's health. They provide water for millions of people,
regulate sea levels, and support biodiversity. Yet, these frozen
giants are under threat. Rising global temperatures are causing
glaciers to retreat at an alarming rate, leading to water
scarcity, rising sea levels, and increasing the chances of natural
disasters like floods or landslides. These cascading changes
jeopardize ecosystems, human livelihoods, and economies around the
world. To address this urgent challenge, ambitious action to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions is essential. The first World Day
for Glaciers, declared by the UN in its resolution A/RES/77/158
along with the International Year of Glaciers 2025, encourage us
all to act to preserve the vital role of glaciers in sustaining
life on Earth for generations to come. The Second Committee at the
77th session of the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted
Tajikistan's initiative to declare 2025 as the International Year
of Glaciers' Preservation and to proclaim March 21st as World Day
of Glaciers, to be starting in 2025. Glacier melt delivers
nutrients into lakes, rivers, and oceans. Those nutrients can
drive blooms of phytoplankton-the base of aquatic and marine food
chains. The World Day of Glaciers highlights the importance of
glaciers as an integral component of the hydrological cycle and
the serious impact of their accelerated melting on climate, the
environment, human health, and sustainable development. World Day
for Glaciers aim to raise global awareness about the critical role
of glaciers, snow and ice in the climate system and the
hydrological cycle, and the economic, social and environmental
impacts of the impending changes in the Earth's cryosphere. In
this regard and in addressing the issues related to accelerated
melting of glaciers and its consequences, the World Day for
Glaciers also aim at encouraging the exchange of knowledge and
best practices regarding glacier preservation and adaptation
strategies. The initiative was proposed by the President of the
Republic of Tajikistan at the first meeting of the Water and
Climate Leaders in their Call for Action on 3 March 2021 and
included in the tangible outcomes in the Water and Climate Leaders
Action Plan for Integrated Water and Climate Agenda adopted during
the Leaders' meeting in Dushanbe on 4th June 2022. Glaciers are
disappearing at an alarming rate, threatening water supplies,
ecosystems, and millions of livelihoods worldwide, The melting of
glaciers affects everyone: people living in coastal areas affected
by sea level rise, people living in high mountain areas more prone
to the risks of flooding, landslides and avalanches, and people
living in downstream areas that are dependent on water supply from
glaciers. Melting glaciers and ice sheets were identified as one
of the largest contributors of sea level rise in the past decades
according to IPCC 2022. Glaciers in UNESCO World Heritage sites
are melting at an alarming rate, with a third of the sites set to
disappear by 2050. In the same time frame, most remaining tropical
glaciers in South America, Africa and Asia will vanish. Glacier
loss is also accompanied by the loss of biodiversity, especially
of endemic species, as well as the loss of cultural values and
traditional ways of life. Glacier retreat clearly presents a
serious threat to natural and human water supplies in many parts
of the world. The International Year and World Day for Glaciers
therefore focus on providing concrete recommendations to address
climate change impacts on the cryosphere which result in
increasingly irreversible losses, on advocating for more ambitious
mitigation, on convening countries and communities affected by
glacier loss for sharing knowledge and best practices for
preservation and adaptation, and on raising international funding
for adaptation action in affected areas. The International Year
and World Day complement the Five Years of Action for the
Development of Mountain Regions 2023-2027 adopted by the United
Nations General Assembly in December 2022. The Five Years of
Action present the main outcome of the International Year of
Sustainable Mountain Development 2022 which was adopted by the
General Assembly in December 2021. The importance of initiatives
related to the Earths' cryosphere for the achievement of the
Sustainable Development Goals are recognized by the adoption of
the International Year and World Day. The activities are further
linked to the implementation of the International Decade for
Action "Water for Sustainable Development" 2021-2028,
the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 and
the Global Biodiversity Framework. During the day, we ask to
participants Why Glaciers Matter and What can we do to preserve
them?. Follow the conversation with the hashtags: #21march,

March 21: International Day Of Forests:
-- Roosevelt called them "the lungs of the Earth,"
Robert Frost and millions of poets were inspired by them, and
Sting is fighting to save them. We're talking about forests. And
celebrities aren't the only ones who feel a strong connection with
them. We all do. Just a simple walk in the woods can calm and
invigorate our senses. In fact, the forests are so crucial to the
future of our planet that the UN declared March 21 to be the
International Day Of Forests. For many years now, this amazing
global celebration has been creating awareness all over the world
about the importance of forests. They are one of our greatest
natural treasures that we must preserve and protect. The
International Day Of Forests is observed annually to celebrate
forests and create awareness about the importance of preserving
them. The International Day Of Forests aims to celebrate and raise
awareness of the importance of all types of forests. Some 2.4
billion people use wood-based energy for cooking. Forests help
mitigate climate change and improve soil, air and water quality.
If sustainably managed, forests are also a source of renewable raw
materials, making a crucial contribution to building circular
economies. In light of these and many other reasons to respect and
safeguard our forests, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
proclaimed March 21st as International Day Of Forests in 2012.
Countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and
international efforts to organize activities involving forests and
trees, such as tree planting campaigns. Forests play a crucial
role in food security, nutrition and livelihoods. In addition to
providing food, fuel, income and employment, forests support soil
fertility, protect water resources, and offer habitats for
biodiversity, including vital pollinators. They are essential for
the survival of forest-dependent communities, particularly
Indigenous Peoples, and contribute to climate change mitigation by
storing carbon. Follow the conversations #IntlForestDay,

yearly recognition of the part American women played in America's
victory in World War II. As the Great War raged on in the early
1940s, all the able-bodied men were drafted to fight, and women
were called upon to support the workforce. The symbolism of Rosie
the Riveter stands for the millions of women who left their homes
for factories to keep the country's manufacturing processes going.
After decades of sustained activism, the U.S. Congress heeded the
calls and dedicated March 21 to this cultural icon. Rosie the
Riveter Day is a fitting recognition of the legacy of working
women in America, and the contribution of women during the Second
World War. Being a total war, when every able-bodied man was sent
to fight for the Allies, the nation's manufacturing leg came to a
halt. From heavy machinery to steel mills and freight ports, every
male-dominated industry came short of personnel due to abrupt
drafting. Hence, the federal government issued propaganda to
encourage women to join the industrial workforce as a patriotic
duty. The iconic poster with a woman in a red bandana raising her
fist was used to recruit women. The total number of female
industrial workers went from 27% to 37% in the years between 1940
and 1945. More than 19 million women held jobs outside of the
traditional women's workforce for the first time ever. Soon
enough, Rosie became a cultural icon. Hollywood immortalized Rosie
the Riveter in 1944's critically acclaimed movie of the same
title. The campaign proved to be a social reckoning that changed
the nature of women's involvement in the workforce forever. Riding
on the hot wave of the suffragette movement, the U.S. government
inadvertently became responsible for the second wave of feminism
in the west. In 2017, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution to
mark March 21 as National Rosie the Riveter Day, a day in Women's
History Month. The movement had lasting effects on the collective
American psyche, and the resolution acknowledges this vital role
played by women during the Second World War. On Sale @ 15% Off

March 21: World Puppetry Day: -- An
annual celebration that aims to recognize puppetry as a global art
form. It is also an attempt to pay tribute to and honor puppeteers
from around the world. The World Puppetry Day was established in
2003 by UNIMA - Union Internationale de la Marionnette. UNIMA is a
non-governmental organization affiliated with UNESCO and it was
their initiative to use this day not only to promote puppetry arts
but also to create a space for the puppet actors to come together.
This day seeks to maintain and safeguard the traditions of the art
of puppetry. Historians claim that puppets were born before
theatre actors. Even before putting actual people on stage, these
inanimate actors were doing a great job of entertaining a wide
range of audiences from different parts of the world. In India,
the origin of puppetry was traced back to the Indus Valley
Civilization in 2500 B.C. Archaeologists had found a terracotta
doll with a detachable head capable of being manipulated by a
string. Many Indian Classical texts like the "Ramayana"
and "Mahabharata" also mention puppets. China, Japan,
and Taiwan also had their versions of puppetry. In ancient Greece,
old written records found in the works of Herodotus and Xenophon
state that puppetry was in practice since the 5th century B.C.
These Greek plays had puppetry shows performed in front of the
common people and European puppetry was inspired by this. There is
also archaeological evidence of puppets in Egypt in 2000 B.C.
During this period, figures of wood operated by string by humans
to demonstrate the actions such as kneading bread. In the 16th
century, the traditional British "Punch and Judy"
puppetry originated from the Italian commedia dell'arte (an
earlier theatre form). This show became very popular among the
masses and was performed with various alterations till the 19th
century. In 1929, the Union Internationale de la Marionnette
(UNIMA), or International Puppetry Association, was established in
Prague. This organization was made to spark a resurgence of
puppetry and help puppeteers show off their art form and connect
with other like-minded artists. UNIMA centers have since been
created in several parts of the world. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

March 21: Harmony Day: -- Today we come
together to celebrate unity and diversity! Harmony Day was
originally an Australian celebration but is now marked worldwide
by conscientious citizens. Whether you want to be better friends
with your neighbors or stand in the shoes of another, we've got
some harmonious habits and unifying ideas to make your Harmony Day
a picture of peace. Harmony Day was first celebrated in Australia
in 1999, but its roots go back hundreds of years. In 2017,
researchers published evidence in the journal "Nature"
that the ancestors of Aboriginal Australians landed there from
Southeast Asia about 65,000 years ago. No one knows exactly how
they got there, and although the distance was shorter than it is
today due to large expanses of frozen water, some speculate that
they still had to undertake a sea voyage of at least 45 miles,
perhaps, according to the Australian Museum, in rafts made of
bamboo! These first settlers were the original indigenous
Australians and lived in harmony with the land for centuries.
Then, in 1788, the British Empire reached Australia, landing at
Botany Bay to establish a penal colony of exiled prisoners. The
British used the Australian land to replicate their own Western
civilization, a culture that did not work in harmony with that of
the indigenous peoples of Australia and resulted in a mass
slaughter of the people who had occupied the land for hundreds of
years. As a result, as the nation grew, Australia (like many
countries) was a divided society. In the late 20th century,
despite the legislation enshrining equal rights for all, many
people still suffered from racist attacks. In 1998, after
activists condemned the country for persistently turning a blind
eye to its racism, the Australian government commissioned a study
into the nature of racism over the last decade. The study
highlighted a greater need for people to 'live in harmony' and, as
a result, Harmony Day was created to encourage everyone to respect
each other and appreciate the country's multicultural background.
Whilst Harmony Day is still predominantly an Australian holiday,
people celebrate it worldwide by reflecting on the ways they can
live in harmony with their neighbors, regardless of their
background or circumstances. The communities themselves choose how
they wish to celebrate, with over 55,000 Harmony Day events held
since the celebration's birth. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

March 21: Red Nose Day: -- Red Nose Day
is not only about the red noses; it's about making a charitable
difference by having fun! Join the laughter and support a great
cause on this Red Nose Day an exciting event that is not only fun
and delightful, but also raises money for charity. It incorporates
comedians and other stars, as well as individuals who want to
participate by wearing a red nose for the day, making a donation,
and much more. Red Nose Day has a delightful background that began
a few decades ago! Back in 1985, Comic Relief started as a charity
with the desire to respond to the famine that was devastating
Ethiopia at the time. The desire was to get comedians together to
help people laugh while raising support to help people around the
world. The following year, the notion of Red Nose Day was
established and was then held every other year, broadcast on
British Television (BBC) as a telethon usually taking place in
March. Although the charity focuses have changed throughout the
years, the organization continues to raise funds for those in
need, particularly for ending poverty in children. By 2015, Red
Nose Day had made its way to the United States and it had a great
amount of success there. In 2021 it was announced that Red Nose
Day in the UK and in the US would convert from every other year to
taking place annually, which is a win for those watching as well
as for the kids that it supports! Red Nose Day events have
featured some of the most famous comedians, pop stars and other
famous people from around the UK, the US and other places. This
includes names like Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Steve Martin, Take
That, Jack Black, Simon Cowell, James Corden, Miranda Hart and so
many more over the years. Skits and activities have included
entertainment such as Dance-a-Thons, LOL-a-thons, and even a
record set in the Guiness Book of World Records for the longest
radio show. In addition to comedy and performances, other events
and challenges have been included in Red Nose Day. Some years have
included special reunions in honor of film casts, such as "Four
Weddings and a Funeral", as well as the "Love Actually"
cast. Some more recent years have also included a Kilimanjaro
challenge in which several celebrities participated in a climb up
the largest mountain in Africa. All in all, Red Nose Day has been
responsible for raising over _1 billion GBP and more than $250
million USD that has been donated to charity, with expenses for
the show being completely underwritten by sponsors. In addition,
the show has sold millions of red noses for people to wear that

March 21: National Common Courtesy Day:
-- A yearly reminder of the behavior that keeps society from
melting into a sea of madness. In addition, the day brings
awareness to how crucial common courtesy is in our lives and
provides examples to help us improve. In the Merriam-Webster
dictionary, courtesy is described as a: behavior marked by
polished manners or respect for others: courteous behavior b: a
courteous and respectful act or expression. Common courtesy can be
as simple as saying "please" and "thank you"
when asking for and receiving a service, gift, or assistance.
Kindness and courtesy go a long way and are noticed by others even
if you do not realize it. Letting someone in front of you in
traffic is easy. Hold open a door for someone or give a person a
hand with his groceries. Give up your seat on the bus to someone
who might need it. Introduce yourself to the new employee or kid
at school and take the time to introduce them to the rest of the
crew. These examples provide a glimpse into how you can infuse
courtesy into your life. Momentary deeds of courtesy may be
incremental, but they might make a huge difference in someone's
life. In the words of social activist and author Bryant H. McGill,
"A polite enemy is just as difficult to discredit, as a rude
friend is to protect." So if common courtesy is not a part of
your daily routine, make Common Courtesy Day your opportunity for
change. Start implementing courtesy into your life. Try it; not
only will others appreciate it, but you will feel good about it,
too. Show your appreciation for the common courtesy you
experience. And use #CommonCourtesyDay to post on social media! On

March 21: National Fragrance Day: --
Spring is now in the air, and so is National Fragrance Day. Each
year on March 21st, let your favorite scents lift your mood or
carry you to another place. Have you ever been transported back in
time simply by catching the scent of a loved one's perfume? Or
perhaps it was the smell of baby powder on a newborn that sent you
reeling back to the days when your child was an infant. Maybe it
was a combination of ginger and molasses, and suddenly you were in
your grandmother's kitchen. Whatever the fragrance, scents, and
memory are powerfully linked. We associate summer with the smell
of freshly cut grass, thunderstorms with the smell of the damp
air, and the acrid scent of sulfur when lightning has struck. We
often connect memories of winter holidays with warm spiced pies
and cookies. The brain is an amazing thing, and science finds out
more about it every day. Simply put, the olfactory bulb which is
responsible for processing all those smells we take in is next to
the hippocampus deep inside the brain. Neuroscientists have
discovered that one of the responsibilities of the hippocampus is
creating new memories. Research suggests smell and memory are
closely related since the olfactory bulb and the hippocampus are
adjacent to each other. Our memories are most nearly linked to
those we have loved. Your first love may have worn a unique
botanical fragrance, or perhaps the uncle who taught you to tie
intricate knots smelled of cedar as he told war stories. While we
may often take a trip down memory lane by looking at a scrapbook,
perhaps this time remembering our favorite fragrances will stir up
memories that were long forgotten, or maybe we will make some new
ones. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

March 21: World Poetry Day: -- "How
do I love thee? Let me count the ways." Writer Elizabeth
Barrett Browning dedicated this iconic poem to her husband Robert
Browning but her famous sonnet could just as easily declare love
for poetry itself. We can all do that on World Poetry Day, on
March 21. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) founded this day in 1999. Poetry uses
rhythms and imagery to elicit emotion and the imagination of the
reader. Poetry can rhyme, using what are called meters of long and
short syllables. Some poetry, written in what's called 'free
verse,' doesn't employ rhyme or meters. Poems are broken into
stanzas, which are like paragraphs, and can be up to 12 lines
long. We believe the first known poem appeared 4,000 years ago in
Babylon. Today, countless types of poems are available to enjoy,
including haikus, limericks, sonnets, and ballads. Poetry is a
beautiful form of expression. No other type of literature creates
such a plethora of feelings and emotions as the abstraction of
poetry. The earliest poetry is believed to have surfaced with the
"Epic of Gilgamesh" some time during 2000 B.C., but it
is likely that poetry existed even before the spread of literacy.
Different types of poetry have trended during different eras, and
undergone transformations. From sonnets to rap lyrics, the core
purpose of poetry remains the same - to explore the human
condition and invoke emotion through words. Poetry resonates with
the existential dilemmas of mankind, exhuming ideas from deep
within. World Poetry Day is celebrated every year on March 21,
celebrating a linguistic expression that people from all cultures
can identify with. Poetry can be found in the history of every
nation, and brings us together under shared values and common
humanity. The most basic of poems have the power to stir dialogue.
The day was proposed and adopted by UNESCO in 1999, on the
occasion of its 30th General Conference held in Paris to "give
fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and
international poetry movements." The organization hoped to
inspire the celebration of poetry all over the world, preserve
endangered languages, and stimulate poetic expression through this
day. Poets, both past and present, are honored, and oral
traditions of reciting poetry are revived. Reading, writing, and
teaching poetry are encouraged, and converged with other mediums
of expression such as music, dance, painting, and more. On Sale @

black people involved in the operation - a then young black female
who grew up with these people, whose family members had among them
an uncle who did hard time on Robben Island with Mandela as a
result of the bombing - made it a point to intercept me in front
of the main Bayonne Post Office (where I regularly go, so she knew
I was coming) during the summer of 2020 - the "Summer Of
George Floyd", and the beginning of my wearing a "BLACK
LIVES MATTER" tee shirt literally every time I left the house
between June 1, 2020 (the 7th day after Floyd was killed) to Labor
Day, September 6, 2021. ========= She went out of her way to
intercept me like this 1) to let me know that fact about the white
man who made the bomb timer, whom she grew up with (I told her I
already knew, but that I was grateful that she made me certain),
and 2) to say she had "come here to tell you" that "if
it were not for good white people like you, apartheid would never
have been overthrown" - her *exact* words, words that are now
engraved in my heart, an affect she intended for me to have.
========= NOTE #3: I believe the reason she decided to meet me to
tell me this was not to make me "feel good" - it would
have been a waste of effort for her to go out of her way just to
make me feel good, and it would have served no useful purpose - it
was because she wanted me to remember that my contribution was
vital - and most important, that she wanted that knowledge to help
me to persevere in the black civil rights movement - in case
anyone came to doubt my white person self's commitment to the
cause. ========= NOTE #4: That all means that this great and good
woman - intimately involved in the very fight against Apartheid
that landed Mandela and her uncle in jail - deliberately went out
of her way to find out where I went to in town, arranged to
intercept me at an appropriate public place she knew I'd go to,
and made it a point to tell me that my contributions were
appreciated, important and vital - and to make me remember for the
rest of my life that she, of all people, went ouf of her way to
tell me that. (For the rest of my life, I will never get over the
awe of that - nor will I ever stop trying to be worthy of it
(again, as she intended :)* ). ========= March 21: International
Race Relations Day: -- International Day For The Elimination Of
Racial Discrimination: -- Human Rights Day (South Africa): --
March 21, 1960: Apartheid: The Sharpeville Massacre: -- Police
open fire on a group of unarmed black South African demonstrators,
killing 69 and wounding 180. In commemoration of the Sharpeville
Massacre, March 21 is now observed in South Africa as Human Rights
Day, a public holiday in honour of human rights and to
commemorate. The Sharpeville Massacre occurred after a day of
demonstrations against pass laws, a form of internal passport
system designed to segregate the population, manage urbanisation,
and allocate migrant labour. A crowd of about 5,000 to 7,000
protesters went to the police station. The South African Police
opened fire on the crowd, killing 69 people. Sources disagree as
to the behaviour of the crowd; some state that the crowd was
peaceful, while others state that the crowd had been hurling
stones at the police, and that the shooting started when the crowd
started advancing toward the fence around the police station.
There were 289 casualties in total, including 29 children. Many
sustained back injuries from being shot as they fled. The purpose
of Umkhonto we Sizwe, as a response to this massacre was to attack
installations involved in the repression of the people (such as
the radio station from which police used to radio commands to
attacking police officers during the Sharpesville Massacre). In
1962, due to his involvement with Umkhonto we Sizwe, he was
arrested for conspiring to overthrow the state, and sentenced to
life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial. Umkhonto we Sizwe, meaning
"The Spear of the Nation", abbreviated as MK, was the
paramilitary wing of the African National Congress (ANC),
co-founded by Nelson Mandela in the wake of the Sharpeville
massacre. Its founding represented the conviction in the face of
the massacre that the ANC could no longer limit itself to
nonviolent protest; its mission was to fight against and topple
the South African government and the ruling National Party. After
warning the South African government in June 1961 of its intent to
resist further acts of government instituted terror if the
government did not take steps toward constitutional reform and
increased voting rights, MK launched its first attacks against
government installations on December 16, 1961. It was subsequently
classified as a terrorist organisation by the South African
government and the United States, and banned. For a time it was
headquartered in the affluent suburb of Rivonia, in Johannesburg.
On July 11, 1963, 19 ANC and MK leaders, including Nelson Mandela,
Arthur Goldreich and Walter Sisulu, were arrested at Liliesleaf
Farm, Rivonia. The farm was privately owned by Arthur Goldreich
and bought with South African Communist Party and ANC funds, as
individuals who were not white were unable to own a property in
that area under the Group Areas Act. This was followed by the
Rivonia Trial, in which ten leaders of the ANC were tried for 221
militant acts designed to "foment violent revolution".
Wilton Mkwayi, chief of MK at the time, escaped during trial. MK
was integrated into the South African National Defence Force by

World War I: The First European War (The European Theater Of World
War I): The Western Front Of World War I: The German Spring
Offensive (Kaiserschlacht (German: "Kaiser's Battle"),
(The Ludendorff Offensive): Operation Michael (German: Unternehmen
Michael): -- In an all-out drive to win the war, the first phase
of The 1918 German Spring Offensive begins with Operation Michael,
launched from the Hindenburg Line, in the vicinity of
Saint-Quentin, France. Operation Michael's goal was to break
through the Allied (Entente) lines and advance in a north-westerly
direction to seize the Channel Ports, which supplied the British
Expeditionary Force (BEF), and to drive the BEF into the sea.
Following American entry into the war in April 1917, the Germans
decided that their only remaining chance of victory was to defeat
the Allies before the United States could ship soldiers across the
Atlantic and fully deploy its resources. Operation Michael was
launched from the Hindenburg Line (German: Siegfriedstellung,
"Siegfried Position"), a German defensive position in
the vicinity of Saint-Quentin, France. Its goal was to break
through the Allied (Entente) lines and advance in a north-westerly
direction to seize the Channel Ports, which supplied the British
Expeditionary Force (BEF) and to drive the BEF into the sea.
General Erich Ludendorff, the chief of the German General Staff,
began the battle with a five-hour artillery barrage, followed by a
rush of German troops. Two days later, Ludendorff adjusted his
plan and pushed for an offensive due west, along the whole of the
British front north of the River Somme. This was designed to first
separate the French and British Armies before continuing with the
original concept of pushing the BEF into the sea. The offensive
lasted until April 6 and resulted in the Germans gaining about 35
miles of territory. Allied and German casualty figures for both
battles approached 500,000. In July 1918, the Allies regained
their numerical advantage with the arrival of American troops. In
August, they used this and improved tactics to launch a
counteroffensive. The ensuing Hundred Days Offensive resulted in
the Germans losing all of the ground that they had taken in the
Spring Offensive, the collapse of the Hindenburg Line, and the
capitulation of Germany that November. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

March 21, 1921: The Interwar Period (The
Aftermath Of World War I, The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The
Soviet Union (The Union Of Soviet Socialist Republics, USSR): The
History Of The Soviet Union: The Economic History Of The Soviet
Union: The New Economic Policy (NEP): -- The New Economic Policy
(NEP) is implemented by The 10th Congress of the All-Russian
Communist Party by the decree, "On The Replacement Of
Prodrazvyorstka By Prodnalog", which abolished
Prodrazvyorstka (forced grain-requisition) and introduced
Prodnalog (a tax on farmers, payable in the form of raw
agricultural product), in response to the economic failure of War
Communism, the economic and political system that existed in
Soviet Russia during the Russian Civil War from 1918 to 1921.
Lenin characterized the NEP in 1922 as an economic system that
would include "a free market and capitalism, both subject to
state control", while socialized state enterprises would
operate on "a profit basis". The NEP represented a more
market-oriented economic policy (deemed necessary after the
Russian Civil War of 1918 to 1922) to foster the economy of the
country, which had suffered severely since 1915. The Soviet
authorities partially revoked the complete nationalization of
industry (established during the period of war communism of 1918
to 1921) and introduced a mixed economy which allowed private
individuals to own small and medium-sized enterprises, while the
state continued to control large industries, banks and foreign
trade. In addition, the NEP abolished forced grain-requisition and
introduced a tax on farmers, payable in the form of raw
agricultural product. The Bolshevik government adopted the NEP in
the course of the 10th Congress of the All-Russian Communist Party
(March 1921) and promulgated it by a decree on 21 March 1921: "On
the Replacement of grain-requisition by food tax". Further
decrees refined the policy. Other policies included monetary
reform (1922-1924) and the attraction of foreign capital. The NEP
created a new category of people called NEPmen (nouveau riches).
Joseph Stalin abandoned the NEP in 1928 with the Great Break, the
radical change in the economic policy of the USSR by which NEP of
1921 was abandoned in favor of 1) the acceleration of
collectivization and industrialization, and 2) The Cultural
Revolution In The Soviet Union, whose goal was a new type of
culture as part of a new socialist society, including an increase
in the proportion of people from proletarian classes in the social
composition of the intelligentsia. War Communism (Russian:
Voyennyy Kommunizm) began in June 1918, enforced by the Supreme
Economic Council, known as the Vesenkha. According to Soviet
historiography, the ruling Bolshevik administration adopted this
policy with the goal of keeping towns (the proletarian power-base)
and the Red Army stocked with food and weapons since circumstances
dictated extreme measures as the ongoing civil war disrupted
normal economic mechanisms and relations. The New Economic Policy
(Russian: Novaya Ekonomicheskaya Politika) was proposed by
Vladimir Lenin in 1921 as a temporary expedient that Lenin
characterized as an economic system that would include "a
free market and capitalism, both subject to state control,",
while socialized state enterprises would operate on "a profit
basis". The NEP represented a more market-oriented economic
policy which was deemed necessary after the Russian Civil War of
1918 to 1922 in order to foster the economy of the country, which
had suffered severely since 1915. The Soviet authorities partially
revoked the complete nationalization of industry (established
during the period of War Communism of 1918 to 1921) and introduced
a system of mixed economy which allowed private individuals to own
small enterprises, while the state continued to control banks,
foreign trade, and large industries. Further decrees refined the
policy. Other policies included monetary reform (1922-1924) and
the attraction of foreign capital. The NEP policy created a new
category of people called NEPmen (Nouveau Riches). Joseph Stalin
abandoned the NEP in 1928 with the Great Break, the radical change
in the economic policy of the USSR from 1928 to 1929, primarily
consisting of the process by which the New Economic Policy (NEP)
of 1921 was abandoned in favor of the acceleration of
collectivization and industrialization. The term came from the
title of Joseph Stalin's article "Year of the Great Break:
Towards The 12th Anniversary Of October) published on November 7,

served with every branch of the United States Armed Forces and in
the air forces and navies of many other nations. In Canadian
service it was known as the Canso. They were primarily and
famously employed in conducting maritime patrol, reconnaissance
and search and rescue operations by both the United States Navy
and United States Army Air Forces. As the Black Cats, they were
also sent by the United States Navy on night bombing, torpedoing,
strafing and harassment missions against Japanese supply vessels
and warships. The last military PBYs served until the 1980s. As of
2021, 86 years after its first flight, the aircraft continues to

What is largely accepted as the first major rock and roll concert
occurs when Alan Freed presents the Moondog Coronation Ball at the
Cleveland Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Freed had joined WJW-Radio in
1951 as the host of a classical-music program, but he took up a
different kind of music at the suggestion of Leo Mintz, owner of
the Record Rendezvous store in Cleveland, who had noted with great
interest the growing popularity, among young customers of all
races, of rhythm-and-blues records by black musicians. Mintz
decided to sponsor Freed's three hours of late-night programming.
Once they saw the popularity of the program increase, they decided
on holding a live dance event featuring some of the artists whose
records were appearing on Freed's show. The concert was organized
by Freed along with Lew Platt, a local concert promoter, and
Freed's sponsors, including Mintz. The concert featured Tiny
Grimes, Paul Williams and the Hucklebuckers, and the Rocking
Highlanders (an African American instrumental group that appeared
in kilts). Also on the bill were the Dominoes, Varetta Dillard and
Danny Cobb. More tickets were printed than the arena's actual
capacity, in part due to counterfeiting and a printing error. With
an estimated 20,000 individuals trying to crowd into an arena that
held slightly more than half that - and worries that a riot might
break out as people tried to crowd in - the fire authorities shut
down the concert after the first song by opening act Paul
"Hucklebuck" Williams ended. Freed made a public apology

Civil Rights Protests: Civil Rights Protests In The United States:
The Selma Voting Rights Campaign: The Selma To Montgomery Marches:
The Third Selma To Montgomery March (The March To Montgomery): --
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., after two failed attempts - the first
by violent opposition and the second by court order - at last
successfully leads 3,200 people across the Edmund Pettus Bridge
and begins the third and finally successful civil rights march
from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. On Wednesday March 17, U.S.
District Court Judge Frank Minis Johnson ruled in favor of the
protesters, saying their First Amendment right to march in protest
could not be abridged by the state of Alabama: "The law is
clear that the right to petition one's government for the redress
of grievances may be exercised in large groups . ... These rights
may ... be exercised by marching, even along public highways."
Judge Johnson had sympathized with the protesters for some days,
but had withheld his order until he received an iron-clad
commitment of enforcement from the White House. President Johnson
had avoided such a commitment in sensitivity to the power of the
state's rights movement, and attempted to cajole Governor Wallace
into protecting the marchers himself, or at least giving the
president permission to send troops. Finally, seeing that Wallace
had no intention of doing either, the president gave his
commitment to Judge Johnson on the morning of March 17, and the
judge issued his order the same day. To ensure that this march
would not be as unsuccessful as the first two marches were, the
president federalized the Alabama National Guard on March 20 to
escort the march from Selma. The ground operation was supervised
by Deputy U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark. He also sent Joseph
A. Califano Jr., who at the time served as Special Assistant to
the Secretary of Defense, to outline the progress of the march. In
a series of letters, Califano reported on the march at regular
intervals for the four days. On Sunday, March 21, close to 8,000
people assembled at Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church to commence the
trek to Montgomery. Most of the participants were black, but some
were white and some were Asian and Latino. Spiritual leaders of
multiple races, religions, and creeds marched abreast with Dr.
King, including Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Greek Orthodox Archbishop
Iakovos, Rabbis Abraham Joshua Heschel and Maurice Davis, and at
least one nun, all of whom were depicted in a photo that has
become famous. The Dutch Catholic priest Henri Nouwen joined the
march on March 24. In 1965, the road to Montgomery was four lanes
wide going east from Selma, then narrowed to two lanes through
Lowndes County, and widened to four lanes again at the Montgomery
county border. Under the terms of Judge Johnson's order, the march
was limited to no more than 300 participants for the two days they
were on the two-lane portion of US 80. At the end of the first
day, most of the marchers returned to Selma by bus and car,
leaving 300 to camp overnight and take up the journey the next
day. On March 22 and 23, 300 protesters marched through chilling
rain across Lowndes County, camping at three sites in muddy
fields. At the time of the march, the population of Lowndes County
was 81% black and 19% white, but not a single black was registered
to vote. There were 2,240 whites registered to vote in Lowndes
County, a figure that represented 118% of the adult white
population (in many Southern counties of that era it was common
practice to retain white voters on the rolls after they died or
moved away). On March 23, Hundreds of black marchers wore kippot,
Jewish skullcaps, to emulate the marching rabbis, as Heschel was
marching at the front of the crowd. The marchers called the kippot
"freedom caps." On the morning of March 24, the march
crossed into Montgomery County and the highway widened again to
four lanes. All day as the march approached the city, additional
marchers were ferried by bus and car to join the line. By evening,
several thousand marchers had reached the final campsite at the
City of St. Jude, a complex on the outskirts of Montgomery. That
night on a makeshift stage, a "Stars for Freedom" rally
was held, with singers Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett, Frankie
Laine, Peter, Paul and Mary, Sammy Davis Jr., Joan Baez, Nina
Simone, and The Chad Mitchell Trio all performing. Thousands more
people continued to join the march. On Thursday, March 25, 25,000
people marched from St. Jude to the steps of the State Capitol
Building where King delivered the speech "How Long, Not
Long". He said: "The end we seek is a society at peace
with itself, a society that can live with its conscience. ... I
know you are asking today, How long will it take? I come to say to
you this afternoon however difficult the moment, however
frustrating the hour, it will not be long." After delivering
the speech, King and the marchers approached the entrance to the
capitol with a petition for Governor Wallace. A line of state
troopers blocked the door. One announced that the governor was not
in. Undeterred, the marchers remained at the entrance until one of
Wallace's secretaries appeared and took the petition. Later that
night, Viola Liuzzo, a white mother of five from Detroit who had
come to Alabama to support voting rights for blacks, was
assassinated by Ku Klux Klan members while she was ferrying
marchers back to Selma from Montgomery. Among the Klansmen in the
car from which the shots were fired was FBI informant Gary Rowe.
Afterward, the FBI's COINTELPRO operation spread false rumors that
Liuzzo was a member of the Communist Party and had abandoned her
children to have sexual relationships with African-American
activists. The third Selma march received national and
international coverage. It was reported that it publicized the
marchers' message without harassment by police and segregation
supporters. Gaining more widespread support from other civil
rights organizations in the area, this third march was considered
an overall success, with greater degree of influence on the
public. Subsequently, voter registration drives were organized in
black-majority areas across the South, but it took time to get the
target population to sign up. U.S. Representative William Louis
Dickinson made two speeches to Congress on March 30 and April 27,
saying that there was alcohol abuse, bribery, and widespread
sexual license among the marchers. Religious leaders present at
the marches denied the allegations, and local and national
journalists found no grounds for his accounts. The allegations of
segregation supporters were collected in Robert M. Mikell's
pro-segregationist book Selma (Charlotte, 1965). The Selma To
Montgomery Marches were three protest marches, held in 1965, along
the 54-mile highway from Selma, Alabama to the state capital of
Montgomery. The marches were organized by nonviolent activists to
demonstrate the desire of African American citizens to exercise
their constitutional right to vote, in defiance of segregationist
repression, and were part of a broader voting rights movement
underway in Selma and throughout the American South. By
highlighting racial injustice, they contributed to passage that
year of the Voting Rights Act, a landmark federal achievement of
the Civil Rights Movement. The first of the marches was on March
7, and became known as Bloody Sunday; 600 civil rights marchers,
led by John Lewis of the Student Non Violent Coordinating
Committee and Rev. Hosea Williams of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference, were brutally attacked by state and local
police after they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge over the
Alabama River. Film of the beatings was broacast on nationwide
television that night and provoked national outrage. The Second
Selma To Mongomery March, known as Turnaround Tuesday, took place
on March 9. Troopers, police, and marchers confronted each other
at the county end of the bridge, but when the troopers stepped
aside to let them pass, King led the marchers back to the church.
He was obeying a federal injunction while seeking protection from
federal court for the march. That night, a white group beat and
murdered the white civil rights activist James Reeb, a Unitarian
Universalist minister from Boston, who had come to Selma to march
with the second group. Many other clergy and sympathizers from
across the country also gathered for the second march. On March
15, President Lyndon B. Johnson, responding to the Selma crisis,
told the U.S. Congress "We shall overcome" while
advocating the Voting Rights Act. When Martin Luther King saw
Johnson using this phrase during his speech, his eyes welled up
with tears of happiness. The Act was passed on August 6th of that
year. The route is memorialized as the "Selma To Montgomery
Voting Rights Trail," and is designated as a U.S. National
Historic Trail. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

available golds. Eighty nations were represented at the Moscow
Games, the smallest number since 1956. The 1980 Summer Olympics,
officially known as the Games Of Tthe XXII Olympiad and commonly
known as Moscow 1980 (Russian: Moskva 1980), were an international
multi-sport event held from July 19 to August 3, 1980 in Moscow,
Soviet Union, in present-day Russia. The Games were the first to
be staged in Eastern Europe, and remain the only Summer Olympics
held there, as well as the first Olympic Games to be held in a
Slavic language-speaking country. They were also the only Summer
Olympic Games to be held in a communist country until 2008 Summer
Olympics held in China. These were the final Olympic Games under
the IOC Presidency of Michael Morris, 3rd Baron Killanin. The
Soviet-Afghan War was a conflict wherein insurgent groups (known
collectively as the Mujahideen), as well as smaller Maoist groups,
fought a nine-year guerrilla war against the Soviet Army and the
Democratic Republic of Afghanistan government throughout the
1980s, mostly in the Afghan countryside. The Mujahideen were
variously backed primarily by the United States, Pakistan, Iran,
Saudi Arabia, China, and the United Kingdom; the conflict was a
Cold War-era proxy war. Between 562,000 and 2,000,000 civilians
were killed and millions of Afghans fled the country as refugees,
mostly to Pakistan and Iran. The war caused grave destruction in
Afghanistan and contributed to the Soviet collapse, in hindsight
leaving a mixed and tragic legacy to the peoples of both
territories. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!
