March 4: National Snack Day: -- National Snack Day marks the celebratory spirit of snacks and takes place on March 4 every year. From the twirls of a soft pretzel to the crunch of roasted almonds, we love snacks in all of their glorious shapes, tastes, and colors. This quirky holiday is the brainchild of Jane Shoemaker-Galloway. There's a snack for every occasion. From Saturday night hot wings to Monday afternoon's biscuits, getting through the day is easier with a snack in our hands. Throw a party, invite your pals, and claim your favorite bite of heaven on National Snack Day. Munching is a favorite pastime in the U.S. The average American eats more than 17 pounds of snacks in a year. From football games to late-night movies, snacking is an important part of the culture. This is why an entire day is dedicated to it. National Snack Day is the initiative of Jane Shoemaker-Galloway. 'Snack' is derived from 'snacken,' the Dutch word for 'to bite.' The concept of snacks dates back to centuries ago when any food that didn't require utensils to prepare was considered 'low class.' Can you imagine that the 21st century's holy trinity of snacks - peanuts, popcorn, and pretzels - were once considered 'lower-class foods?'. Americans embraced the formal concept of snacking in the 15th century and added the word 'snack' to their vocabulary in 1402. Soon after, peanuts, which arrived on the Atlantic coast with slave ships, gained prominence as the most popular item of snacking. The biggest rise of snacking was observed in the Prohibition Era, with the creation of numerous snack companies such as Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Butterfinger, Snickers, Ritz Crackers, Fritos, and Lay's Potato Chips. In today's day and age, the idea of snacking has largely evolved and is often looked down upon. Surplus food, something that was once considered a luxury, is now seen as a threat to health. Similarly, the hunt for healthy alternatives to classic snacking staples is on the rise. On National Snack Day, we pledge to put our best snacks forward and enjoy the day one crunch at a time.

March 4: National Sons Day: -- A yearly honoring of the sons of the world and those who raise them. The day also takes a look at a son's role and his relationship with those around him. Around the world, slightly more sons are born than daughters. Both bring joy to families, though. Our rambunctious sons grow into adult men and forge their own independence in the world. Some are soft-spoken and gentle. Others with a spark of curiosity fill every hour with questions, some unanswerable. Parents and family members strive to mold them into a person better than we are. Sons, like many children, test the boundaries until one day, they stand before us, grown. National Sons Day encourages parents to be role models and provide the boundaries sons need. Celebrate their successes while guiding them through their failures. Give them a foundation of skills that they will rely on for a lifetime and pass on to their sons. Each day as a son and the parent of one is a treasure. Boys need us to model responsibility, hard work, and integrity. As they work and learn beside us, those qualities will be instilled in them. The day reminds us of the value our sons bring to our lives and others. Consider all the things you want your son to know and be when he's an adult. Take the day to teach your son something you think is important for him to know. Change a tire or balance the checkbook. The small tasks, the mundane ones are the ones that get in the way when we don't know how to do them. Bond over the experience by letting him know you teach him these skills to clear a path for the bigger events in his life. Join an organization for mentoring boys without male role models. Find a role model that fits the interests of your son. Teach your son something your father taught you. Offer to give a skills class at a school. Make the day unique by taking a photograph with all the sons together, and share on social media using #NationalSonsDay! In 2018, Jill Nico created National Sons Day celebrating the importance and significance of sons and those who raise them. While there's no single reason for selecting March 4th, the founder explains spring seemed ideal, and the date resounds with momentum when spoken. Additionally, many sons enjoy spring sports, and it's an excellent time to spend time outdoors. Visit the Facebook page to join in the celebration. In the late 1990s, an effort to create National Sons Day began as a counterpart to National Take Your Daughters to Work Day. By 1998, the group called National Sons Day created National Take Your Sons to Work Day. In later years, the separate observances joined forces.

March 4: International Amerasian Day: -- A day designated by The Amerasian Foundation in honor of Amerasians, a person born in Asia to an Asian mother and a U.S. military father (also known as War babies or G.I. babies), or persons of such ancestry with mothers in the U.S. military or have Amerasian ancestry through their grandparents, etc. Several countries in East and Southeast Asia have significant populations of Amerasians, reflecting a history of US military presence. These include South Korea, Okinawa (Japan), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The latter once had the largest US air and naval bases outside the US mainland. The term "Amerasian" was coined by writer Pearl S. Buck, who devoted much of her life on their behalf, and the term was formalized by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. The Amerasian Foundation (AF) and Amerasian Family Finder (AFF) define an Amerasian as "Any person who was fathered by a citizen of the United States (an American serviceman, American expatriate or U.S. Government Employee (Regular or Contract)) and whose mother is or was an Asian National."

March 4: National Marching Music Day: -- A day to honor the dedicated musicians and performers of many diverse styles and backgrounds. Marching Music Day celebrates all varieties of art forms that bring us "music on the move." For centuries, the beat of a drum has kept military units moving in unison. From the training field to the battlefield, the football stadium to the Broadway stage, marching music delights performers and spectators. They also perform in small gyms, auditoriums, and grand arenas. From small parades to impressive spectacles, fifers, pipers, buglers, drum corps, marching bands, parade groups, drill teams, and color guards bring music to life. They bring audiences to their feet while stirring a crowd to an enthusiastic roar. The military roots of the drum corps have evolved over time. As a well-rooted art form, marching music moves us during somber memorials. And yet it thrills us with an ability to perform delightful music and execute intricate routines with exact precision. Drill squads, marching bands, drum lines, and drum corps name but a few of the many styles of marching music. They engage hundreds of thousands of performers of all ages, abilities, and experience levels. We see marching music in schools, military units, community celebrations, and local auxiliaries. The music is as varied as the ensembles themselves, too! While instruments may be limited to brass in some settings, others may include woodwinds and electric guitars in others. Dance teams, baton twirlers, and color guards perform to modern soundtracks. They take center stage with performances ranging from traditional, standard marches to rock and roll, jazz, contemporary, and electronic dance music. Furthermore, marching music keeps changing! Spectacular string bands incorporate their own unique sound and elaborate costuming. Technology has produced lighter, electronic and digital instruments, making it possible for musicians to march with violins, cellos, basses, and synthesizers to entertain crowds in unique and creative new ways. To observe Marching Music Day, support your local marching music groups: attend their performances and bring new supporters with you; back their competitions by contributing to their fundraisers; if you're a musician, consider becoming part of the band; and share your experience by teaching others. Whether it is through a school, a veterans group, or an independent ensemble, they will appreciate your support. And you will appreciate the entertainment and music! Use #MarchForth #MarchingMusicDay to share your support on social media. Drum Corps International founded Marching Music Day to celebrate marching music as an engaging and ever-expanding art form around the world. The day also celebrates Music In Our Schools Month. The observance chose March Fourth as a clever play on words.

March 4: National Hug A G.I. Day: -- A day to support America's soldiers by giving them a grateful hug! Gather around your servicemen and women to give them a hug to show your support. With either a pat on the back or a hearty handshake, be sure to give both past and present G.I.s your appreciation. While G.I.s refer to Army personnel, the day encompasses all those who have served in the military. So, hug those Jarheads, Wingnuts, Squids, and Coasties, too! Today the term G.I. is fairly commonly known to refer to those serving in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. How that came to be is a little less military protocol and more the American story. It seems at the turn of the 20th century, G.I. was a notation used in supply records for galvanized iron. It was later used during World War I for German artillery shells made from galvanized iron. Sometime during the war, soldiers started interpreting the initials as "Government Issue" or "General Issue". By the time World War II came around it was starting to gain meaning as the generic enlisted man. Not surprisingly, sarcastic usage among many servicemen was common, feeling they were just like any other Government Issued supply being mass-produced for Uncle Sam. About that time G.I. Joe was born. His creator, comic strip artist, and former Army Sergeant David Breger, issued his first G.I. Joe cartoon series in Yank magazine on June 17, 1942. The term G.I. became more permanently etched in the American language when in 1944 President Franklin Roosevelt signed the bill that became known as the G.I. Bill; Servicemen's Readjustment Act. And then there was no going back when Hasbro trademarked their G.I. Joe as an action figure in 1964. To observe National Hug A G.I. Day: Find a G.I. you know and give them a hug; send a G.I. you know a virtual hug via text, e-mail, phone or even snail mail; show your support for the military; and use #HugAGIDay to post on social media. In 1996, Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith created Hug A G.I. Day. She selected the only day on the calendar that was also a military command to salute and celebrate the men and women who risk their lives for our country and freedoms.

March 4: Global Day Of The Engineer: -- A day jointly sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (W.F.E.O.) to acknowledge the achievements of engineers and their contributions to construction and building infrastructure. There's also an added focus on engineering and how to get future generations interested in it. Today, Global Day Of The Engineer's goals also includes sustainable development, and it has become a source of inspiration for many aspiring engineers. On March 4, 1968, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (W.F.E.O.) was founded in Paris, France. It is a global, nongovernmental organization working to unite international engineering associations. Since then, the WF.E.O. has worked tirelessly to advance engineering as a solution to international and national issues. The group also encourages its members to participate in cross-country efforts to create a sustainable and equitable world through engineering and construction. Global Day Of The Engineer was first observed in 2016. The celebrations emphasize that engineering can be a gratifying profession because an engineer's innovations are helpful in our daily lives. With proper education, training, and guidance, engineering can be a lot of fun. It's not the dry and rigid profession that we assume it is. There is a growing focus on encouraging young students to take an interest in engineering concepts and pursue technology and engineering in their higher studies. Because engineering has several niches and departments, there's something of interest for everyone. It's also a stable career with good pay and benefits. And if you think about it, human beings have been engineering since the beginning of time! Each year, Global Day Of The Engineer unites the international engineering community to celebrate engineering accomplishments. The organizers also encourage the youth to participate in engineering activities and reflect on the field's contributions.

March 4: National Grammar Day: -- An annual observance that encourages the use of correct grammar in both verbal and written language. According to the Global Language Monitor, the estimated number of words in the English language is 1,025,109. There is some controversy over that figure, but it's safe to say it is over a million. Language is indeed something to celebrate. Some people might suggest that grammar is a set of rules for language, but it is a system for understanding language. Understanding the system and the structure helps us understand each other better and help us learn new languages. So read a new blog, book, magazine, or newspaper. You might learn a new turn of phrase or word. Learn a new word from another language. Not all languages use the same grammar rules. Some languages even have words that don't exist in other languages. Spend time with someone who speaks your first language as a second language. You might learn something new about syntax, tense, or spelling. What might be a grammar error in one language is perfectly fine in another. And of course, do your best to use proper grammar, and use #NationalGrammarDay to post on social media! Martha Brockenbrough, founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar, designated National Grammar Day in 2008.

March 4: Holy Experiment Day: -- An annual holiday to encourage general tolerance toward religious practices different from ours. The importance of the story the holiday commemorates is also the precedence for the core beliefs the establishment of Pennsylvania, and ultimately, the United States was based on: religious tolerance, diversity, and representative government. William Penn Jr, son of English Admiral Sir William Penn, played an important role in the creation of the colony. He envisioned a colony full of people who embraced faith and were tolerant to the religion of others, influenced by his early experience in England where members of the Quakers sect were chastised for their beliefs. 'Holy Experiment' was the term William Penn chose to describe the ideal government he established within the territory of modern-day Pennsylvania state, granted to him as repayment of the debt owed to his dad by the British monarchy. The importance of the event to America's history and the hallmark of its existence is what Holy Experiment Day aims to commemorate. After witnessing the brutal intolerance of minority religious sects in Britain and being imprisoned himself, Penn sought to establish a colony of people who embraced faith and were tolerant to the religion of others within his newfound territory in 1681. The origin of the term came from Penn's belief that the charter which King Charles II signed to grant him the 29 million acres of land was a gift from God. He believed it was a divine assurance to proceed with his intention to build a safe haven for minority religious groups, saying, "that an example may be set up to the nations: there may be room there, though not here, for such a holy experiment." As a member of the Religious Society of Friends more popularly known as Quakers, Penn believed that their knowledge of and communion with God's divine authority meant their principles, which included religious and political freedom and general pacifism, would be successfully established. Therefore, the new colony saw its very first law guaranteeing freedom and tolerance for all religions who "shall confess and acknowledge one Almighty God to be the Creator, Upholder, and Ruler of the world." Unfortunately, Penn's surmission would prove false as political, economic, and even religious conflicts would work against the spiritual foundation of the Experiment after the first few years. Today, Holy Experiment Day is a day to experiment with different religions, modes of worship, and prayer. People share their faith and beliefs with family, friends, and members of their community. In turn, they consider the beliefs of others or try out a new religion for a day. All of this encourages the larger community to be more open-minded and unprejudiced.

March 4: Old Inauguration Day: -- An annual event to commemorate the events that ushered in a newly constitution-defined inauguration date for president-elect and newly elected senators. The change to the constitution it celebrates, The "Twentieth Amendment", moved the beginning and ending of the terms of the president and vice president from March 4 to January 20, and of members of Congress from March 4 to January 3. The passage of the "Twentieth Amendment" in 1933 also included provisions for what should be done when there is no president-elect. Old Inauguration Day commemorates the events that ushered in a newly constitution-defined inauguration date for president-elect and senators in the United States. The holiday is called so to allude to the changed date of inaugural ceremonies before the introduction of the "Twentieth Amendment" to the constitution that moved the date from March 4 to January 20. Historically, there are several reasons for the introduction of the "Twentieth Amendment" to the constitution. First, it is to allow the president-elect enough time to move into the nation's capital. But more so, the amendment was made to make sure the incoming Congress, rather than the outgoing one, would hold a contingent election if the Electoral College deadlocked regarding either the presidential or vice-presidential elections. The edit to the constitution moved the beginning and ending of the terms of the president and vice president from March 4 to January 20, and of members of Congress from March 4 to January 3. Its passage in 1933 also included provisions for what should be done when there is no president-elect. Nicknamed the "Lame Duck Amendment" due to the decline in power an outgoing official has during transition periods, the change the amendment introduced, is one of a handful of times in the past when the inauguration of a new president changed throughout the history of the country. Franklin Delano Roosevelt's election in 1937 marks the first inauguration ceremony held on January 20 as recently included in the constitution.

March 4, 1861: The United States: The History Of The United States: United States Presidential Inaugurations: Old Inauguration Day: The First Inauguration Of Abraham Lincoln: -- Abraham Lincoln is inaugurated as the 16th president of the United States was held on Monday, March 4, 1861, at the East Portico of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. This was the 19th inauguration and marked the commencement of the first, and eventually only full term of Abraham Lincoln as president and the only term of Hannibal Hamlin as vice president. The presidential oath of office was administered to Lincoln by Roger B. Taney, the Chief Justice of the United States. John C. Breckinridge became the first outgoing vice president to administer the vice-presidential oath of office to his successor. This was the first time Lincoln appeared in public with a beard, which he had begun growing after being elected president, in response to a written request by 11-year-old Grace Bedell. This effectively made him the first president to have any facial hair beyond sideburns. On Inauguration Day, Lincoln's procession to the Capitol was surrounded by heavily armed cavalry and infantry, providing an unprecedented amount of protection for the President-elect as the nation stood on the brink of war. During the 16 weeks between Lincoln's victory in the 1860 presidential election and Inauguration Day, seven slave states had declared their secession from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Abraham Lincoln's First Inaugural Address was was primarily addressed to the people of the South, and was intended to succinctly state Lincoln's intended policies and desires toward that section, where seven states had seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Written in a spirit of reconciliation toward the seceded states, Lincoln's inaugural address touched on several topics: first, his pledge to "hold, occupy, and possess the property and places belonging to the government"-including Fort Sumter, which was still in Federal hands; second, he stated that the Union would not interfere with slavery where it existed ; and third, a promise that while he would never be the first to attack, any use of arms against the United States would be regarded as rebellion, and met with force. The inauguration took place on the eve of the American Civil War, which began soon after with the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter. Lincoln denounced secession as anarchy, and said that majority rule had to be balanced by constitutional restraints in the American system of republicanism: "A majority held in restraint by constitutional checks and limitations, and always changing easily with deliberate changes of popular opinions and sentiments, is the only true sovereign of a free people." Desperately wishing to avoid a civil war, Lincoln ended with this plea: "I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."

March 4, 1933: The United States: The History Of The United States: United States Presidential Inaugurations: Old Inauguration Day: The First Inauguration Of Franklin D. Roosevelt: -- Newly elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt takes office and delivers his first inaugural address, attempting to restore public confidence during the Great Depression, stating, "...let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself". His cabinet appointments included the first woman to a Cabinet post, Secretary Of Labor, Frances Perkins. The First Inauguration Of Franklin D. Roosevelt as the 32nd President of the United States was held on Saturday, March 4, 1933, at the East Portico of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. This was the 37th inauguration, and marked the commencement of the first term of Franklin D. Roosevelt as President and John Nance Garner as Vice President. It was also the last inauguration to be held on the constitutionally prescribed date of March 4, as the 20th Amendment, ratified earlier that year, moved Inauguration Day to January 20. As a result, Roosevelt's (and Garner's) first term in office was shorter than a normal term by 43 days. This was also the last time the vice president took the oath of office in the Senate chamber. The inauguration took place in the wake of Democrat Roosevelt's landslide victory over Republican incumbent Herbert Hoover in the 1932 presidential election. With the nation at its peak of the Great Depression, Roosevelt's inaugural speech was awaited with great anticipation. Broadcast nationwide on several radio networks, the speech was heard by tens of millions of Americans, and set the stage for Roosevelt's urgent efforts to respond to the crisis. Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes administered the presidential oath of office. Roosevelt wore a morning coat and striped trousers for the inauguration, and took the oath with his hand on his family Bible, open to I Corinthians 13. Published in 1686 in Dutch, it remains the oldest Bible ever used in an inaugural ceremony, as well as the only one not in English, and was originally used by Roosevelt for his 1929 and 1931 inaugurations as Governor of New York, and later his three subsequent presidential inaugurations until his death in 1945.

March 4, 1394: #BOTD: Prince Henry The Navigator, Portuguese patron of exploration, central figure in the early days of the Portuguese Empire and in the 15th-century European maritime discoveries and maritime expansion, Grand Master of the Military Order Of Christ, the Portuguese successor to the Knights Templar, which had its headquarters at Tomar in central Portugal (d. November 13, 1460) is #born Henrique Aviz into the House of Aviz (Portuguese: Casa de Avis), also known as the Joanine Dynasty. Through his administrative direction, Dom Henrique of Portugal, Duke of Viseu (Portuguese: Infante Dom Henrique, o Navegador) is regarded as the main initiator of what would be known as the Age of Discoveries. Henry was the third child of the Portuguese King John I and responsible for the early development of Portuguese exploration and maritime trade with other continents through the systematic exploration of Western Africa, the islands of the Atlantic Ocean, and the search for new routes. King John I founded the House of Aviz. Henry encouraged his father to conquer Ceuta (1415), the Muslim port on the North African coast across the Straits of Gibraltar from the Iberian Peninsula. He learned of the opportunities offered by the Saharan trade routes that terminated there, and became fascinated with Africa in general; he was most intrigued by the Christian legend of Prester John and the expansion of Portuguese trade. Henry is regarded as the patron of Portuguese exploration. Prince Henry The Navigator died of natural causes in Sagres, Portugal aged 66. He is buried at Batalha Monastery in Batalha, District Of Leiria, Centro Portugal.

March 4, 1493: The Age Of Discovery (The Age Of Exploration): The Voyages Of Christopher Columbus: The First Voyage Of Christopher Columbus: -- Christopher Columbus arrives back in Lisbon, Portugal, aboard his ship Nina, after his voyage to what is now known as the Bahamas and other islands in the Caribbean. On August 3, 1492, the First Voyage Of Christopher Columbus began as Christopher Columbus set sail in the evening from Palos de la Frontera, Spain, with three ships. The largest ship was a carrack (Spanish: nao), the Santa Maria (formerly known as the Gallega (Spanish: "Galician")). The other two ships were smaller caravels. The name of one is lost: it is known today only by the nickname Pinta, which in Castilian of the time meant "painted one". The Santa Clara was nicknamed affectionately the Nina ("the little one"), a pun on the name of her owner, Juan Nino of Moguer. The monarchs forced the citizens of Palos to contribute to the expedition. The Santa Maria was owned by Juan de la Cosa and captained by Columbus. The Pinta and the Nina were piloted by the Pinzon brothers (Martin Alonso and Vicente Yanez). Thus Columbus embarked on the first of his four great voyages of discovery. The purpose of this voyage was to find a westerly route to the Far East; he instead landed on October 12th in the Bahamas, thinking it was an outlying Japanese island.

March 4, 1519: The Spanish Colonization Of The Americas: Indigenous Rebellions In Mexico And Central America: The Spanish Conquest Of The Aztec Empire (The Conquest Of Mexico, The Spanish-Aztec War (1519-1521), The Conquest Of Tenochtitlan): -- Hernan Cortes arrives in Mexico in search of the Aztec civilization and its wealth. The Spanish Conquest Of The Aztec Empire, also known as the Conquest of Mexico or the Spanish-Mexican War (1519-21), was one of the primary events in the Spanish colonization of the Americas. There are multiple 16th-century narratives of the events by Spanish conquerors, their indigenous allies, and the defeated Aztecs. It was not solely a contest between a small contingent of Spaniards defeating the Aztec Empire but rather the creation of a coalition of Spanish invaders with tributaries to the Aztecs, and most especially the Aztecs' indigenous enemies and rivals. They combined forces to defeat the Mexica of Tenochtitlan over a two-year period. For the Spanish, the expedition to Mexico was part of a project of Spanish colonization of the New World after twenty-five years of permanent Spanish settlement and further exploration in the Caribbean.

March 4, 1747: #BOTD: #HBD! Casimir Pulaski, Polish nobleman, American Revolutionary War general and Freemason, known along with his counterpart Michael Kovats de Fabriczy as "The Founding Fathers Of The US Cavalry" (d. October 11, 1779) is #born Kazimierz Michal Wladyslaw Wiktor Pulaski in Warsaw, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (modern Poland), Casimir Pulaski is remembered as a hero who fought for independence and freedom in both Poland and the United States. Numerous places and events are named in his honor, and he is commemorated by many works of art. Pulaski is one of only eight people to be awarded honorary United States citizenship. Before aiding in the American Revolution, he was a military leader in Poland's struggle against Russia. He joined the Americans in 1777 and fought alongside General Washington at Brandywine, then served at Germantown and Valley Forge. He was mortally wounded during a heroic charge in the Siege of Savannah, Georgia. Kazimierz Michal Wladyslaw Wiktor Pulaski of Slepowron followed in his father's footsteps, becoming interested in politics at an early age and soon becoming involved in the military and the revolutionary affairs in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Pulaski was one of the leading military commanders for the Bar Confederation and fought against Russian domination of the Commonwealth. When this uprising failed, he was driven into exile. Following a recommendation by Benjamin Franklin, Pulaski travelled to North America to help in the cause of the American Revolutionary War. He distinguished himself throughout the revolution, most notably when he saved the life of George Washington. Pulaski became a general in the Continental Army, created the Pulaski Cavalry Legion and reformed the American cavalry as a whole. At the Battle of Savannah, while leading a cavalry charge against British forces, he was fatally wounded by grapeshot, and died shortly thereafter. Casimir Pulaski died of grapeshot wounds while leading a cavalry charge in an attempt to rally fleeing French forces. General Pulaski Memorial Day on October 11th honors this Polish hero of the American Revolution, as well as Polish immigrants and their descendants across the country, who have contributed to the founding of the United States, and the continued growth and welfare of the nation. The grapeshot responsible for taking Casimir Pulaski's life is on display at the Georgia Historical Society in Savannah. The Charleston Museum also has a grapeshot reported to be from Pulaski's wound. Despite his fame, there have long been uncertainties and controversies surrounding both his death and burial, as well as both the place and date of his birth. The generally accepted account of his death is that Pulaski was carried from the field of battle and taken aboard the South Carolina merchant brig privateer Wasp, under the command of Captain Samuel Bulfinch, where he died two days later, having never regained consciousness. Many primary sources record a burial at sea; however, the historical accounts for Pulaski's time and place of burial vary considerably. According to several contemporary accounts there were witnesses, including Pulaski's aide-de-camp, that Pulaski received a symbolic burial in Charleston on October 21, sometime after he was buried at sea. Other witnesses, including Captain Samuel Bulfinch of the Wasp, however, claimed that the wounded Pulaski was actually later removed from the ship and taken to the Greenwich Plantation in the town of Thunderbolt, near Savannah, where he died and was buried. Despite these discrepancies, his undisputed heroic death, admired by American Patriot supporters, further boosted his reputation in America. Some forty-six years later, in March 1825, during his grand tour of the United States, his Comrade-In-Arms General Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette personally laid the cornerstone for the Casimir Pulaski Monument in Monterey Square in Savannah, Georgia during a full Masonic ceremony with Richard T. Turner, High Priest of the Georgia chapter, conducting the service; Pulaski was a member of the Masonic Army Lodge in Maryland (a Masonic Lodge in Chicago is named Casimir Pulaski Lodge, No.1167, and a brochure issued by the lodge claims he obtained the degree of Master Mason on June 19, 1779, and was buried with full Masonic honours.).

March 4, 1826: #BOTD: #HBD! Theodore Judah, American civil engineer who sought out and obtained investors for what became the Central Pacific Railroad (CPRR) and a central figure in the original promotion, establishment, and design of the First Transcontinental Tailroad (originally known as "The Pacific Railroad" and later as "The Overland Route"), a 1,911-mile (3,075 km) continuous railroad line constructed between 1863 and 1869 that connected the existing eastern U.S. rail network at Council Bluffs, Iowa, with the Pacific coast at the Oakland Long Wharf on San Francisco Bay (d. November 2, 1863) is #born Theodore Dehone Judah in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the son of Mary (Reece) and The Rev. Henry Raymond Judah, an Episcopal clergyman. As chief engineer of CPRR, he performed much of the route survey work to determine the best alignment for the railroad over the Sierra Nevada, which was completed six years after his death of yellow fever contracted in Panama on a voyage with his wife Anna Pierce Judah to New York City, apparently becoming infected during their land passage across the Isthmus of Panama. He was traveling to New York to seek alternative financing to buy out the major investors. Anna took his body back to Greenfield, Massachusetts, where he was buried in the Pierce family plot in the Federal Street Cemetery. He died before his dream of a transcontinental railroad could be completed.

March 4, 1888: #BOTD: #HBD! Knute Rockne, American football player and coach at the University of Notre Dame. Leading Notre Dame for 13 seasons, Rockne accumulated over 100 wins and three national championships, regarded as one of the greatest coaches in college football history (d. March 31, 1931) is #born Knut Larsen Rokne in Voss, Norway, to smith and wagonmaker Lars Knutson Rokne (1858-1912) and his wife, Martha Pedersdatter Gjermo (1859-1944). He immigrated to Chicago with his parents when he was five years old, and grew up in the Logan Square area of Chicago, on the northwest side of the city. Knute Kenneth Rockne's biography at the College Football Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 1951, identifies him as "without question, American football's most-renowned coach". Rockne helped to popularize the forward pass and made the Notre Dame Fighting Irish a major factor in college football. Knute Rockne died aged 43 in The 1931 Transcontinental & Western Air (now Trans World Airlines [TWA]) Fokker F-10 Crash near Bazaar, Kansas after taking off from Kansas City Municipal Airport, Kansas City, Missouri while en route to participate in the production of the film The Spirit of Notre Dame (released October 13, 1931) about him and his Fighting Irish. Rockne's unexpected death startled the nation and triggered a national outpouring of grief, comparable to the death of a president. President Herbert Hoover called Rockne's death "a national loss". King Haakon VII Of Norway posthumously knighted Rockne and sent a personal envoy, Olaf Bernts, Norwegian consul in Chicago, to Rockne's funeral. March 4, 1917: First Women: -- Jeannette Rankin of Montana becomes the first female member of the United States House Of Representatives. Jeannette Pickering Rankin (June 11, 1880 - May 18, 1973) was an American politician and women's rights advocate, and the first woman to hold federal office in the United States. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives by the state of Montana in 1916, and again in 1940. She is to date the only woman elected to Congress from Montana. Each of Rankin's Congressional terms coincided with initiation of U.S. military intervention in each of the two world wars. A lifelong pacifist and a supporter of non-interventionism, she was one of 50 House members (total of 56 in both chambers) who opposed the war declaration of 1917, and the only member of Congress to vote against declaring war on Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. A Progressive Era member of the Republican Party, Rankin was also instrumental in initiating the legislation that eventually became the 19th Constitutional Amendment, granting unrestricted voting rights to women. She was proudest of being the only woman who was able to vote in Congress for the women's right to vote. She championed the causes of gender equality and civil rights throughout a career that spanned more than six decades.

March 4, 1918: Influenza Pandemics: The European Civil War: World War I: The First European War (The European Theater Of World War I): The 1918-1920 Flu Pandemic (The Great Influenza Rpidemic, The Spanish Flu, The H1N1 Influenza A Virus Influenza Pandemic): -- The Company cook Albert Gitchell, from Haskell County, reports sick at Camp Funston in Fort Riley, a United States Army installation in North Central Kansas that at the time was training American troops during World War I, making him the first documented American victim of what became known as The Spanish Flu. Within days, 522 men at the camp had reported sick. By March 11, 1918, the virus had reached Queens, New York. Failure to take preventive measures in March/April was later criticised. The Spanish Flu, more properly known as The 1918 Flu Pandemic or The Great Influenza Epidemic, was an exceptionally deadly global influenza pandemic caused by the H1N1 influenza A virus. After the earliest documented case in March 1918 in Kansas, United States, further cases recorded in France, Germany and the United Kingdom in April. Two years later, nearly a third of the global population, or an estimated 500 million people, had been infected in four successive waves. Estimates of deaths range from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest pandemics in history. The pandemic broke out near the end of World War I, when wartime censors in the belligerent countries suppressed bad news to maintain morale, but newspapers freely reported the outbreak in neutral Spain, creating a false impression of Spain as the epicenter and leading to the "Spanish flu" misnomer. Limited historical epidemiological data make the pandemic's geographic origin indeterminate, with competing hypotheses on the initial spread. Most influenza outbreaks disproportionately kill the young and old, with a higher survival rate in-between, but this pandemic had unusually high mortality for young adults. Scientists offer several explanations for the high mortality, including a six-year climate anomaly affecting migration of disease vectors with increased likelihood of spread through bodies of water. The virus was particularly deadly because it triggered a cytokine storm, an sudden and extreme immune system response, ravaging the stronger immune system of young adults, although the viral infection was apparently no more aggressive than previous influenza strains. Malnourishment, overcrowded medical camps and hospitals, and poor hygiene, exacerbated by the war, promoted bacterial superinfection, killing most of the victims after a typically prolonged death bed. The 1918 Spanish flu was the first of three flu pandemics caused by H1N1 influenza A virus; the most recent one was the 2009 swine flu pandemic. The 1977 Russian flu was also caused by H1N1 virus.

March 4, 1932: #BOTD: #HBD! Miriam Makeba, nicknamed Mama Africa, Black South African singer, songwriter, actress, United Nations goodwill ambassador, and civil rights activist (d. November, 9 2008) is #born Zenzile Miriam Makeba in the black township of Prospect, near Johannesburg, South Africa to Swazi and Xhosa parents. Associated with musical genres including marabi, Afropop, jazz, township music and world music, she was an advocate against apartheid and white-minority government in South Africa. Makeba was forced to find employment as a child after the death of her father. She had a brief and allegedly abusive first marriage at the age of 17, gave birth to her only child in 1950, and survived breast cancer. Her vocal talent had been recognized when she was a child, and she began singing professionally in the 1950s, with the Cuban Brothers, the Manhattan Brothers, and an all-woman group, the Skylarks, performing a mixture of jazz, traditional African melodies, and Western popular music. In 1959, Makeba had a brief role in the anti-apartheid film Come Back, Africa, which brought her international attention, and led to her performing in Venice, London, and New York City. In London, she met the American singer Harry Belafonte, who became a mentor and colleague. She moved to New York City, where she became immediately popular, and recorded her first solo album in 1960. Her attempt to return to South Africa that year for her mother's funeral was prevented by the country's government. Makeba's career flourished in the United States, and she released several albums and songs, her most popular being "Pata Pata" (1967). Along with Belafonte she received a Grammy Award for her 1965 album An Evening with Belafonte/Makeba. She testified against the South African government at the United Nations and became involved in the civil rights movement. She married Stokely Carmichael, a leader of the Black Panther Party, in 1968. As a result, she lost support among white Americans. The US government cancelled her visa while she was travelling abroad, leading her and Carmichael to move to Guinea. She continued to perform, mostly in African countries, including at several independence celebrations. She began to write and perform music more explicitly critical of apartheid; the 1977 song "Soweto Blues", written by her former husband Hugh Masekela, was about the Soweto uprising. After apartheid was dismantled in 1990, Makeba returned to South Africa. She continued recording and performing, including a 1991 album with Nina Simone and Dizzy Gillespie, and appeared in the 1992 film Sarafina!. She was named a UN goodwill ambassador in 1999, and campaigned for humanitarian causes. She died of a heart attack during a 2008 concert in Italy. Makeba was among the first African musicians to receive worldwide recognition. She brought African music to a Western audience, and popularized the world music and Afropop genres. She also made popular several songs critical of apartheid, and became a symbol of opposition to the system, particularly after her right to return was revoked. Miriam Makeba died on stage of a heart attack aged 76 following a solidarity concert performance in Castel Volturno, Italy for a journalist covering the story of six immigrants from Ghana killed by the Mafia. Her remains were cremated, and her ashes scattered at sea at Cape Point, South Africa. Upon her death, former South African President Nelson Mandela said that "her music inspired a powerful sense of hope in all of us."

Engelbert Dollfuss, the Austrian Chancellor, declares the situation to be the "Self-Elimination Of Parliament" (German: Selbstausschaltung des Parlaments), and that his government had the authority to rule by decree under emergency provisions dating from the First World War. This marked the beginning of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss' authoritarian rule by decree, and opposition attempts to reconstitute the National Council were unsuccessful.

March 4, 1933: First Women: -- Frances Perkins becomes the first female United States Secretary Of Labor, and thereby the first female member of the United States Cabinet. Frances Perkins (born Fannie Coralie Perkins) was an American sociologist and workers-rights advocate who served as the U.S. Secretary Of Labor from 1933 to 1945, the longest serving in that position. As a loyal supporter of her friend, Franklin D. Roosevelt, she helped pull the labor movement into the New Deal coalition. She and Interior Secretary Harold L. Ickes were the only original members of the Roosevelt cabinet to remain in office for his entire presidency. During her term as Secretary Of Labor, Perkins executed many aspects of the New Deal, including the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Public Works Administration and its successor the Federal Works Agency, and the labor portion of the National Industrial Recovery Act. With the Social Security Act she established unemployment benefits, pensions for the many uncovered elderly Americans, and welfare for the poorest Americans. She pushed to reduce workplace accidents and helped craft laws against child labor. Through the Fair Labor Standards Act, she established the first minimum wage and overtime laws for American workers, and defined the standard forty-hour work week. She formed governmental policy for working with labor unions and helped to alleviate strikes by way of the United States Conciliation Service. Perkins dealt with many labor questions during World War II, when skilled manpower was vital and women were moving into formerly male jobs.

March 4, 1943: World War II: The Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Pacific Ocean Theater Of World War II: The South West Pacific Area (SWPA): The New Guinea Campaign: The Battle Of The Bismarck Sea: -- The Battle Of The Bismarck Sea (March 2-4, 1943) comes to an end after a Japanese convoy of eight destroyers and eight transports carrying 7,000 Japanese soldiers heading toward New Guinea were attacked by 137 American bombers, resulting in the sinking of four destroyers and all eight transports, drowning 3,500 Japanese, and putting an end to Japanese efforts to send any more reinforcements to New Guinea. The Battle of the Bismarck Sea was fought with aircraft of the U.S. Fifth Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), who destroyed most of the Japanese task force. The Japanese convoy was a result of a Japanese Imperial General Headquarters decision in December 1942 to reinforce their position in the South West Pacific. A plan was devised to move some 6,900 troops from Rabaul directly to Lae. The plan was understood to be risky, because Allied air power in the area was strong, but it was decided to proceed because otherwise the troops would have to be landed a considerable distance away and march through inhospitable swamp, mountain and jungle terrain without roads before reaching their destination. On 28 February 1943, the convoy - comprising eight destroyers and eight troop transports with an escort of approximately 100 fighter aircraft - set out from Simpson Harbour in Rabaul. The Allies had detected preparations for the convoy, and naval codebreakers in Melbourne (FRUMEL) and Washington, D.C., had decrypted and translated messages indicating the convoy's intended destination and date of arrival. The Allied Air Forces had developed new techniques, such as skip bombing, that they hoped would improve the chances of successful air attack on ships. They detected and shadowed the convoy, which came under sustained air attack on 2-3 March 1943. Follow-up attacks by PT boats and aircraft were made on 4 March on life boats and rafts. All eight transports and four of the escorting destroyers were sunk. Of 6,900 troops who were badly needed in New Guinea, only about 1,200 made it to Lae. Another 2,700 were rescued by destroyers and submarines and returned to Rabaul. The Japanese made no further attempts to reinforce Lae by ship, greatly hindering their ultimately unsuccessful efforts to stop Allied offensives in New Guinea.

March 4, 1944: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Western Front Of World War II: Air Warfare Of World War II: Strategic Bombing During World War II: European Air Operations During The Battle Of Europe: The Bombing Of Berlin In World War II: -- After the success of "Big Week" (American bomber raids on German aircraft manufacturing centers), the USAAF begins a daylight bombing campaign of Berlin. Big Week or Operation Argument was a sequence of raids by the United States Strategic Air Forces (USSTAF) from 20 to 25 February 1944, as part of the European strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany. The planners intended to lure the Luftwaffe into a decisive battle by attacking the German aircraft industry. By defeating the Luftwaffe, the Allies would achieve air superiority and the invasion of continental Europe could proceed. In 1943, the U.S. Army and the Standard Oil company built a set of replicas of typical German working class housing estates, "German Village", the nickname for a range of mock residential houses constructed in 1943 by the U.S. Army in the Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, which would be of key importance in acquiring the know-how and experience necessary to carry out the firebombings on Berlin. It was done with the assistance of Erich Mendelsohn, a Berlin architect who fled the Nazis in 1933. After Big Week proved a success, the firebombing of Berlin began, assisted by the results of the tests at the Dugway Proving Grounds.

On January 30, 2026, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department said that the department had received a call from O'Hara's home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles regarding a woman experiencing difficulty breathing. She was then hospitalized "in serious condition", and died that day at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 71. The cause of death was later revealed to be from a pulmonary embolism, with rectal cancer as the underlying cause. Her remains were cremated, and the ashes given to her widow Bo Welch.

March 4: National Waltz Dance Day: -- The waltz is one of the most widely known dances in the field of ballroom dancing. It is usually danced by a man and woman facing and holding each other in a closed position. It is usually danced at state dinners, weddings, and other formal occasions. The Viennese waltz, as opposed to the slow waltz, refers to the faster renditions of the waltz. Johann Strauss composed the most well-known waltz music with his son. Let's waltz together to commemorate the occasion. The moves of the waltz dance were devised and performed by German peasants in the thirteenth century. They introduced their folk dance, which featured rolls, glides, and twists. It was so warmly welcomed that by the 1500s, it had made its way to the Volta region in Germany, where it was mixed with forms from other local dances. A similar dance, known as the Weller, was popular in Vienna during the sixteenth century. The modern waltz was designed for court dancers rather than folk dancers in the suburban area of Vienna and the Austrian alpine regions. The arrival of free-form dancing with the intimate positioning of dances provoked outrage and scandal among traditional aficionados of old ballroom dance. After the eighteenth century, the waltz style known as 'allemande,' - a dance in which couples moved separately, became popular in France. However, this quickly changed as the popularity of the waltz grew, establishing it as a standard and spreading its influence throughout Europe. The amazing music of Johann Strauss and Franz Lanner was a crucial factor in the development in popularity of the waltz. The waltz was adopted in the U.S. in the mid-nineteenth century, and by the early twentieth century, it had spread around the four corners of the globe. The history of ballroom dancing is marked by the invention of popular dances and periods when new styles completely revolutionized dancing fashion and allowed the popular dance culture to evolve. The waltz is one of the most influential dances that did just that.

March 4: March Forth Day: -- An annual holiday to encourage everyone to work towards achieving their dreams. It aims to provide an opportunity for people to take calculated risks towards achieving their goals and developing themselves. It is a special day to take a stand against procrastination or the faux reasons that tend to creep into our heads and discourage us from even trying. The name was made up as a homophone of the day 'March Fourth.' It is also the shortened version of the full name - 'March Forth and Do Something Day.' March Forth was born out of the numerous stories of people giving up on their goals due to procrastination and sheer lack of motivation. It encourages support for anyone who may need a little nudge to help kickstart and go full steam on their goals. The holiday is observed for the same reason its name alludes to, marching forth, and it is one of the few unofficial holidays that serve an important purpose of helping to guide our path. One interesting thing and perhaps an unintended consequence of the date of the holiday is that it comes off the back of some significant holidays celebrated in the months prior to March Forth Day, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is in January, and February's Black History Month. This is perhaps why some believe the day is an opportune time for Americans to "march forth" towards unity and reflect on the dark history of early human rights struggles to avoid reliving it. To these people, March Forth is a Christian holiday that invites the American populace to begin anew and make an effort to open their hearts and minds to the common goal of unity and the work of racial reconciliation through the love of God. However, the central purpose of the holiday is for people to make a special effort to improve their lives and "March Forth" toward their dreams and highest aspirations, taking calculated risks, and making the necessary sacrifices.

March 4: Brain Injury Awareness Day: -- Since head injuries are so common across the U.S. and the world, educating the public about this significant concern is essential - the purpose of Brain Injury Awareness Day, held annually on March 4. Brain injuries can lead to long-term changes for the affected person and their loved ones and present challenges to their everyday existence. Brain Injury Awareness Day is crucial and is part of a wider campaign observed in the same month as Brain Injury Awareness Week and Brain Injury Awareness Month. Head injuries have existed since the origin of man. Popular culture stereotypically depicts cavemen as wild beings clubbing each other over the heads, and fossilized remains reveal that broken skull bones were all-too-common in ancient times. Skulls with holes were discovered in early battleground graves, suggesting that surgery was attempted at that time to treat brain injuries. Ancient Mesopotamians knew that head injury had serious side effects such as seizures, paralysis, and loss of sight, hearing, or speech. Ancient Greek physicians understood that injuries to the center of thought impaired normal brain functioning to an extent. By the Middle Ages, physicians learned more about the symptoms of brain injuries, and the term 'concussion' - to describe a milder type of head trauma - was commonly used. An Italian physician named Jacopo Berengario da Carpi systematically listed the symptoms of concussion - the first-ever such description we can find. The next few decades were marked by experimentation and discovery as the world tried to understand the brain and the effects of an injury. Both World Wars and the subsequent carnage led to unprecedented head injuries. As a result, more studies were conducted in this field than in previous years. World War I was partially responsible for developing a rehabilitation treatment to reduce the effects of brain injuries, something that caused high mortality before the war. In the 1900s, brain injuries were recognized as a public health problem. This was a time of innovation and advancement in the treatment and management of this condition. Standardized guidelines to treat brain injuries were established, multiple drugs came into being, and survival rates vastly improved. Today, the world is more aware of brain injuries, their causes, and how best to prevent them, but there is room to improve, which is why the U.S. observes Brain Injury Awareness Day.

March 4: Courageous Follower Day: -- A day to shed light on the virtue of followership. Brought into order after Ira Chaleff's groundbreaking book on leadership, "The Courageous Follower: Standing Up To and For Our Leaders," the holiday encourages all of us to become responsible followers. The book has become a source of debate about the multifaceted aspects of leadership since its publication in 1995. A learned and organized follower is an asset to any leader. On Courageous Follower Day, we ditch the idea of rugged individualism and propagate the ethos of genuine followership. In times of failure, the shadows of doubt and disappointments are cast solely on the leader. Absorbing the ire of the public is one of the responsibilities of a leader, but what about the followers? At the heart of every failed leadership, there lies a follower mentality that is ignored and underestimated. Ira Chaleff's book "The Courageous Follower: Standing Up To and For Our Leaders" argues that the responsibility of failure belongs to a follower, as much as it does to the leader. Our view of leadership is stale and obsolete. Equipping the followers with the same level of responsibility as the leaders boosts their confidence and raises awareness about their role on the roadmap to success. Our collective history is a testament to the fact that triumph is a result of courageous followership and determined leadership together. The holiday challenges the established notions of leadership, which puts the onus of failure and success in the hands of leaders alone. When in fact, bearing the fruits of successful leadership is the job of both leaders and followers. Every person possesses the qualities that make him a courageous leader and a follower at some point or the other in their life. In our journey of learning to become courageous followers, we can one day become effective leaders as well. Courageous Follower Day urges us to relinquish the preached idea of rugged individualism and advocate for community-based followership. In his other books, Chaleff explores the meaning of followership in the context of obedience and the responsibility to resist unlawful and inappropriate demands of a leader.

March 4: Holy Experiment Day: -- March 4, 1681: The Colonial History Of The United States: The British Colonization Of The Americas: The Province Of Pennsylvania (The Pennsylvania Colony): -- King Charles II of England grants a land charter to William Penn for the area that will later become Pennsylvania. The name Pennsylvania was derived from "Penn's Woods", referring to William's father Admiral Sir William Penn. The Province of Pennsylvania was one of the two major Restoration colonies. The proprietary colony's charter remained in the Penn family until they were later ousted following the American Revolution and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was established as one of the original thirteen states. The lower counties on Delaware, a separate colony within the Pennsylvania Province, broke away during the American Revolution and was established as the Delaware State and also became one of the original thirteen states. The colony attracted English Quakers, Germans, and Scot-Irish frontiersmen. The Lenape Indian tribe promoted peace with the Quakers. However, after William Penn and Tamanend, who both supported peaceful coexistence, died, wars eventually broke out. The Quakers demonized Lenape mythology even though the Quakers were strong proponents of religious freedom. Philadelphia, the capital of the Province of Pennsylvania, emerged as a major port and commercial city and central location for the thinking, writings, and planning that ultimately inspired the American Revolution. In the 18th century, Philadelphia emerged as the second-largest city in the British Empire, after London. Following the American Revolutionary War, Philadelphia served as the nation's capital until 1800, when a new capital city in Washington, D.C. was constructed at the direction of the young nation's Founding Fathers.

March 4: Benjamin Harrison Day: -- March 4, 1889: The United States: The History Of The United States: United States Presidential Inaugurations: Old Inauguration Day: The Inauguration Of Benjamin Harrison: -- Benjamin Harrison is inaugurated as the 23rd president of the United States was held on Monday, March 4, 1889, at the East Portico of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. This was the 26th inauguration and marked the commencement of the only four-year term of Benjamin Harrison as president and Levi P. Morton as vice president. Chief Justice Melville Fuller administered the presidential oath of office as rain poured down. On this same date in 1881, Benjamin Harrison was sworn in as United States Senator from Indiana. Harrison was 5 ft 6 in (1.68 m) tall, he was only slightly taller than James Madison, the shortest president, but much heavier; he was the fourth (and last) president to sport a full beard. Harrison's inauguration ceremony took place during a rainstorm in Washington D.C. Outgoing president Grover Cleveland attended the ceremony and held an umbrella over Harrison's head as he took the oath of office. His speech was brief - half as long as that of his grandfather, William Henry Harrison, whose speech holds the record for the longest inaugural address of a U.S. president. In his speech, Benjamin Harrison credited the nation's growth to the influences of education and religion, urged the cotton states and mining territories to attain the industrial proportions of the Eastern United States and promised a protective tariff. Concerning commerce, he said, "If our great corporations would more scrupulously observe their legal obligations and duties, they would have less call to complain of the limitations of their rights or of interference with their operations." Harrison also urged early statehood for the territories and advocated pensions for veterans, a statement that was met with enthusiastic applause. In foreign affairs, Harrison reaffirmed the Monroe Doctrine as a mainstay of foreign policy, while urging modernization of the Navy and a merchant marine force. He gave his commitment to international peace through noninterference in the affairs of foreign governments. John Philip Sousa's Marine Band played at the Inaugural Ball inside the Pension Building with a large crowd attending. After moving into the White House, Harrison noted, quite prophetically, "There is only a door - one that is never locked - between the president's office and what are not very accurately called his private apartments. There should be an executive office building, not too far away, but wholly distinct from the dwelling house. For everyone else in the public service there is an unroofed space between the bedroom and the desk."

Perry, known as "The Father Of The Steam Navy" in the United States, English-Scottish American naval officer who commanded ships in several wars, including the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, leader of The Perry Expedition that ended Japan's isolationism and resulted in The Convention Of Kanagawa between Japan and the United States in 1854 (April 10, 1794) #dies aged 63 in New York City of rheumatic fever that had spread to the heart, compounded by complications of gout and alcoholism, as he awaiting further order from the Navy after having been detached from his last post, an assignment to the Naval Efficiency Board. Initially interred in a vault on the grounds of St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, in New York City, Perry's remains were moved to the Island Cemetery in Newport, Rhode Island, on March 21, 1866, along with those of his daughter, Anna, who died in 1839. In 1873, an elaborate monument was placed by Perry's widow over his grave in Newport. Matthew C. Perry was born Matthew Calbraith Perryin South Kingstown, Rhode Island to Sarah Wallace (nee Alexander) (1768-1830) and Navy Captain Christopher Raymond Perry (1761-1818) of the distinguished Perry family, an American naval and political dynasty from Rhode Island of 17th-century English immigrant stock whose members included several United States naval commanders, naval aviators, politicians, artists, clergymen, lawyers, physicians, and socialites. Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry was interested in the education of naval officers and assisted in the development of an apprentice system that helped establish the curriculum at the United States Naval Academy. With the advent of the steam engine, he became a leading advocate of modernizing the U.S. Navy accordingly. Living in his adopted home of New York City, Perry's health began to fail as he suffered from cirrhosis of the liver from heavy drinking as an alcoholic, which compounded the health complications leading to his death. He also suffered severe arthritis that left him in frequent pain, and on occasion precluded him from his duties. Perry spent his last years preparing for the publication of his account of the Japan expedition, announcing its completion on December 28, 1857. Two days later he was detached from his last post, an assignment to the Naval Efficiency Board.

March 4, 1193: #DOTD: #RIP: Saladin, first sultan of Egypt and Syria and the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty (b. c. 1137) #dies of a fever in Damascus, not long after King Richards departed from meeting with him. In Saladin's possession at the time of his death were one piece of gold and forty pieces of silver.; he had given away his great wealth to his poor subjects, leaving nothing to pay for his funeral. He is buried in a mausoleum in the garden outside the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria. Originally the tomb was part of a complex which also included a school, Madrassah al-Aziziah, of which little remains except a few columns and an internal arch. Seven centuries later, Kaiser Wilhelm II Of Germany donated a new marble sarcophagus to the mausoleum. However, the original sarcophagus was not replaced; instead, the mausoleum, which is open to visitors, now has two sarcophagi: the marble one placed on the side and the original wooden one, which covers Saladin's tomb. Saladin known as Salah ad-Din, was born An-Nasir Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub in Tikrit in present-day Iraq. Saladin was a Sunni Muslim of Kurdish ethnicity. Saladin led the Muslim military campaign against the Crusader states in the Levant. At the height of his power, his sultanate included Egypt, Syria, Upper Mesopotamia, the Hejaz, Yemen and other parts of North Africa. Originally sent to Fatimid Egypt in 1164 accompanying his uncle Shirkuh, a general of the Zengid army, on orders of their lord Nur ad-Din, an atabeg (royal governor) of the Seljuks, to consolidate Shawar amid his ongoing power struggle for vizier to the teenage Fatimid caliph al-Adid. With Shawar reinstated as vizier, he engaged in a power struggle with Shirkuh, which saw the former realigning himself with Crusader king Amalric. Saladin climbed the ranks of the Fatimid government by virtue of his military successes against Crusader assaults against its territory and his personal closeness to al-Adid. With Shawar assassinated in 1169 and Shirkuh's natural death later that year, al-Adid appointed Saladin vizier, a rare nomination of a Sunni Muslim to such an important position in the Isma'ili Shia caliphate. During his tenure as vizier, Saladin began to undermine the Fatimid establishment and, following al-Adid's death in 1171, he abolished the Fatimid Caliphate and realigned the country's allegiance with the Sunni, Baghdad-based Abbasid Caliphate. In the following years, he led forays against the Crusaders in Palestine, commissioned the successful conquest of Yemen, and staved off pro-Fatimid rebellions in Upper Egypt. Not long after Nur ad-Din's death in 1174, Saladin launched his conquest of Syria, peacefully entering Damascus at the request of its governor. By mid-1175, Saladin had conquered Hama and Homs, inviting the animosity of other Zengid lords, the official rulers of Syria's various regions. Soon after, he defeated the Zengid army at the Battle of the Horns of Hama and was thereafter proclaimed the "Sultan of Egypt and Syria" by the Abbasid caliph al-Mustadi. Saladin made further conquests in northern Syria and Jazira, escaping two attempts on his life by the "Assassins", before returning to Egypt in 1177 to address issues there. By 1182, Saladin had completed the conquest of Muslim Syria after capturing Aleppo, but ultimately failed to take over the Zengid stronghold of Mosul. Under Saladin's command, the Ayyubid army defeated the Crusaders at the decisive Battle of Hattin in 1187, and thereafter wrested control of Palestine, including the city of Jerusalem, from the Crusaders, who had conquered the area 88 years earlier. Although the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem continued to exist until the late 13th century, its defeat at Hattin marked a turning point in its conflict with the Muslim powers of the region. Saladin died in Damascus in 1193, having given away much of his personal wealth to his subjects, having earned and maintained a life-long reputation of chivalry, or a fair and generous code of conduct towards his enemies and his subjects. He is buried in a mausoleum adjacent to the Umayyad Mosque. Saladin has become a prominent figure in Muslim, Arab, Turkish and Kurdish culture, and he has often been described as being the most famous Kurd in history.

March 4, 1832: #DOTD: #RIP: Jean-Francois Champollion, also known as Champollion Le Jeune (French: Champollion The Younger), French scholar, philologist and orientalist, known primarily as the decipherer of Egyptian hieroglyphs and as the "Founder and Father of Egyptology" (b. December 23, 1790) #dies of a stroke in Paris at the age of 41. Jean-Francois Champollion was born in Figeac in south-western Kingdom of France. A child prodigy in philology, he gave his first public paper on the decipherment of Demotic in 1806, and already as a young man held many posts of honor in scientific circles, and spoke Coptic and Arabic fluently. During the early 19th century, French culture experienced a period of 'Egyptomania', brought on by Napoleon's discoveries in Egypt during his campaign there (1798-1801) which also brought to light the trilingual Rosetta Stone. Scholars debated the age of Egyptian civilization and the function and nature of hieroglyphic script, which language if any it recorded, and the degree to which the signs were phonetic (representing speech sounds) or ideographic (recording semantic concepts directly). Many thought that the script was only used for sacred and ritual functions, and that as such it was unlikely to be decipherable since it was tied to esoteric and philosophical ideas, and did not record historical information. The significance of Champollion's decipherment was that he showed these assumptions to be wrong, and made it possible to begin to retrieve many kinds of information recorded by the ancient Egyptians. Champollion lived in a period of political turmoil in France which continuously threatened to disrupt his research in various ways. During the Napoleonic Wars, he was able to avoid conscription, but his Napoleonic allegiances meant that he was considered suspect by the subsequent Royalist regime. His own actions, sometimes brash and reckless, did not help his case. His relations with important political and scientific figures of the time, such as Joseph Fourier and Silvestre de Sacy helped him, although in some periods he lived exiled from the scientific community. In 1820, Champollion embarked in earnest on the project of decipherment of hieroglyphic script, soon overshadowing the achievements of British polymath Thomas Young who had made the first advances in decipherment before 1819. In 1822, Champollion published his first breakthrough in the decipherment of the Rosetta hieroglyphs, showing that the Egyptian writing system was a combination of phonetic and ideographic signs - the first such script discovered. In 1824, he published a Precis in which he detailed a decipherment of the hieroglyphic script demonstrating the values of its phonetic and ideographic signs. In 1829, he traveled to Egypt where he was able to read many hieroglyphic texts that had never before been studied, and brought home a large body of new drawings of hieroglyphic inscriptions. Home again he was given a professorship in Egyptology, but only lectured a few times before his health, ruined by the hardships of the Egyptian journey, forced him to give up teaching. He died in Paris in 1832, 41 years old. His grammar of Ancient Egyptian was published posthumously. During his life as well as long after his death, intense discussions over the merits of his decipherment were carried out among Egyptologists. Some faulted him for not having given sufficient credit to the early discoveries of Young, accusing him of plagiarism, and others long disputed the accuracy of his decipherments. But subsequent findings and confirmations of his readings by scholars building on his results gradually led to the general acceptance of his work. Although some still argue that he should have acknowledged the contributions of Young, his decipherment is now universally accepted and has been the basis for all further developments in the field.

March 4, 1922: #DOTD: #RIP: Bert Williams, Bahamian-born Black American entertainer, singer, dancer, actor, one of the pre-eminent entertainers of the Vaudeville era and one of the most popular comedians for all audiences of his time, and Freemason (b. November 12, 1874) #dies of pneumonia at his home, 2309 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, New York City at the age of 47, not wanting to miss his performances in Under the Bamboo Tree, knowing that he was the only thing keeping an otherwise moribund musical alive at the box office. However, Williams also emotionally suffered from the racial politics of the era, and because he did not feel fully accepted, he experienced almost chronic depression, coupled with alcoholism and insomnia. On February 27, 1922, Williams collapsed during a performance in Detroit, Michigan, which the audience initially thought was a comic bit. Helped to his dressing room, Williams quipped, "That's a nice way to die. They was laughing when I made my last exit." He returned to New York, but his health worsened. Few had suspected that he was sick, and news of his death came as a public shock. More than 5,000 fans filed past his casket, and thousands more were turned away. A private service was held at the Masonic Lodge in Manhattan, where Williams broke his last barrier. He was the first black American to be so honored by the all-white Grand Lodge. When the Masons opened their doors for a public service, nearly 2,000 mourners of both races were admitted. Williams was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, New York City. Bert Williams was born in Nassau, The Bahamas. He is credited as being the first black man to have the leading role in a film: Darktown Jubilee in 1914. He was by far the best-selling black recording artist before 1920. In 1918, the New York Dramatic Mirror called Williams "one of the great comedians of the world." Williams was a key figure in the development of African American entertainment. In an age when racial inequality and stereotyping were commonplace, he became the first black American to take a lead role on the Broadway stage, and did much to push back racial barriers during his three-decade-long career. Fellow vaudevillian W. C. Fields, who appeared in productions with Williams, described him as "the funniest man I ever saw - and the saddest man I ever knew." In May 1904, Williams was initiated into the Edinburgh Lodge of the Freemasons; the Scottish Masons did not racially discriminate as the United States chapters did, including those of the northern states.

March 4, 1776: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The American Enlightenment: The American Revolution: The American Revolutionary War: The Siege Of Boston: -- The Fortification of Dorchester Heights: In a decisive action early in the American Revolutionary War, troops from the Continental Army under George Washington's command occupy Dorchester Heights, a series of low hills with a commanding view of Boston and its harbor, and mount powerful cannons there threatening the city and the Navy ships in the harbor. General William Howe, commander of the British forces occupying Boston, planned an attack to dislodge them. However, after a snowstorm prevented its execution, Howe chose to withdraw. British forces, accompanied by Loyalists who had fled to the city during the siege, evacuated the city on March 17 and sailed to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

March 4, 1954: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Military Aviation: Maiden Flights: -- The Lockheed XF-104 Starfighter, a single-engine, high-performance, supersonic interceptor prototype for a United States Air Force (USAF) series of lightweight and simple fighters, makes its first flight. Only two aircraft were built; one aircraft was used primarily for aerodynamic research and the other served as an armament testbed. Both aircraft Were destroyed in accidents during testing. The XF-104s were forerunners of over 2,500 production Lockheed F-104 Starfighters that were activated for USAF service on February 26, 1958. Only a few months later it was pressed into action during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, when it was deployed as a deterrent to Chinese MiG-15 and MiG-17 fighters. The Starfighter featured a radical design, with thin, stubby wings attached farther back on the fuselage than most contemporary aircraft. The wing provided excellent supersonic and high-speed, low-altitude performance, but also poor turning capability and high landing speeds. It was the first production aircraft to achieve Mach 2, and the first aircraft to reach an altitude of 100,000 feet after taking off under its own power. The Starfighter established world records for airspeed, altitude, and time-to-climb in 1958, becoming the first aircraft to hold all three simultaneously. It was also the first aircraft to be equipped with the M61 Vulcan autocannon and the AIM-9 Sidewinder missile. Problems with the General Electric J79 engine and a preference for fighters with longer ranges and heavier payloads meant its service with the USAF was short-lived, though it was reactivated for service during the Berlin Crisis of 1961 and the Vietnam War, when it flew over 5,000 combat sorties. While its time with the USAF was brief, the Starfighter found much more lasting success with other NATO and allied nations. In October 1958, West Germany selected the F-104 as its primary fighter aircraft. Canada soon followed, along with the Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, and Italy. The European nations formed a construction consortium that was the largest international manufacturing program in history to that point, though the Starfighter's export success was marred in 1975 by the discovery of bribe payments made by Lockheed to many foreign military and political figures for securing purchase contracts. The Starfighter eventually flew with fifteen air forces, but its poor safety record, especially in Luftwaffe service, brought it substantial criticism. The Germans lost 292 of 916 aircraft and 116 pilots from 1961 to 1989, its high accident rate earning it the nickname "the Widowmaker" from the German public. The final production version, the F-104S, was an all-weather interceptor built by Aeritalia for the Italian Air Force. It was retired from active service in 2004, though several F-104s remain in civilian operation with Florida-based Starfighters Inc.

March 4, 1963: #DOTD: #RIP: William Carlos Williams, known by the monniker WCW, American poet, short story writer, and essayist closely associated with modernism and imagism (b. September 17, 1883) #dies in the town of his birth and life-long residence, Rutherford, New Jersey. His father, William George Williams, was born in England but raised from the age of 5 in the Dominican Republic; his mother, Raquel Helene Hoheb, from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, was of French extraction. Scholars note that the Caribbean culture of the family home had an important influence on Williams. Spanish was WCW's primary means of communication until he was a teenager. While he wrote his poetry in English, Spanish was his first language, and his awaeness and social orientation were shaped by Caribbean customs as well as cultural pluralism. His work has a great affinity with painting, in which he had a lifelong interest. On February 17, 1913, The Armory Show opened in New York City, displaying works of artists who are to become some of the most influential painters of the early 20th century. It inspired writers like William Carlos Williams to bring the vision it represented into literature. In addition to his writing, Williams had a long career as a physician practicing both pediatrics and general medicine. He was affiliated with Passaic General Hospital, where he served as the hospital's chief of pediatrics from 1924 until his death. The hospital, which is now known as St. Mary's General Hospital, paid tribute to Williams with a memorial plaque that states "we walk the wards that Williams walked".

In addition to his obesity, he tended to binge eat in response to professional struggles and weighed in excess of 300 pounds (140 kg) at some points in his life. Candy had a number of risk factors for heart attack, including a strong family history (his father had died prematurely of a heart attack, although his children say he was unaware of his genetic risk), smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, obesity, heavy alcohol use, and use of cocaine. Candy was concerned about his weight. He once lost 100 pounds over a summer while preparing for a new film role with Steve Martin. He frequently dieted and exercised with trainers because of his family history. Candy's funeral was held at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Los Angeles. Candy was entombed in the mausoleum at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City. His crypt lies just above that of fellow actor Fred MacMurray. On March 18, 1994, a special memorial service for Candy, produced by his former improvisation troupe the Second City, was broadcast across Canada. His final two film appearances, Wagons East and Canadian Bacon, are dedicated to his memory. John Candy was born John Franklin Candy on Halloween 1950, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada into the in working-class Catholic family of Sidney James Candy (1920-1955) and Evangeline (nee Aker; 1916-2009) Candyand grew up in Newmarket, Ontario. Candy's mother was of Polish descent. Candy rose to fame as a member of the Toronto branch of the Second City and its related Second City Television series, and through his appearances in such comedy films as Stripes, Splash, Cool Runnings, Summer Rental, Home Alone, The Great Outdoors, Spaceballs, and Uncle Buck, as well as more dramatic roles in Only the Lonely and JFK. One of his most renowned onscreen performances was as Del Griffith, the loquacious, on-the-move shower-curtain ring salesman in the John Hughes comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles. He died of a heart attack while filming the Western parody Wagons East! in Durango, Mexico, aged 43. His final two films, Wagons East! and Canadian Bacon, are dedicated to his memory.
