January 20: National Disc Jockey Day: -- Celebrates the work of our favorite disc jockeys, but it stems from the work of ONE famous jock: Alan Freed, whom you might know as 'Moondog.' This 1950s DJ, who coined the term 'rock and roll,' is the reason we honor DJs on January 20. On this day, we celebrate the talents of all the disc jockeys, from those playing the 'Chicken Dance' for the millionth time at a wedding to the radio personalities who help you get through the morning commute. D.J.s play recorded music for an audience. The songs often suit the theme of the event and the process usually entails aligning the beats of the set of songs in a way the tempos and rhythms sync when played together. This allows for a smooth transition from one music to the other. National DJ Day takes place on January 20 every year. On this day, we celebrate amateur and professional DJs who spin the records and play the grooviest music at the right time. The music is usually played in front of a live audience, but televised or recorded music sessions are also available. The most common types of DJs are club DJs, radio DJs, party DJs, and turntablists - who scratch and manipulate sounds by playing records on turntables. Music has been around for as long as we know it and has evolved through the years with the help of composers, songwriters, and our favorite event guests, the D.J.s. January 20: United States Presidential Inauguration Day: -- United States Presidential Inauguration Day (Every 4 years at the beginning of each presidential administration): The inauguration of the president of the United States occurs, a ceremony to mark the commencement of a new four-year term of the president and vice president of the United States. The inauguration takes place for each new presidential term, even if the president is continuing in office for a second term. Since 1937, it has taken place at noon EST on January 20, the first day of the new term, some 72 to 78 days after the presidential election, except for three occasions when January 20 fell on a Sunday. March 9, 1996) is #born Nathan Birnbaum in New York City, the ninth of 12 children born to Hadassah "Dorah" (nee Bluth; 1857-1927) and Eliezer Birnbaum (1855-1903), known as Louis or Lippa, Jewish immigrants who had come to the United States from Ropczyce, Galicia, now Poland. His family were members of the First Roumanian-American Congregation, also known as Congregation Shaarey Shomayim (Hebrew: "Gates Of Heaven") and the Roumanishe Shul ((Yiddish: "Romanian Synagogue"), an Orthodox Jewish congregation that, for over 100 years occupied a historic building at 89-93 Rivington Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York. George Burns was one of the few entertainers whose career successfully spanned vaudeville, radio, film and television. His arched eyebrow and cigar-smoke punctuation became familiar trademarks for over three quarters of a century. He and his wife, Gracie Allen, appeared on radio, television, and film as the comedy duo Burns and Allen. When Burns was 79, he had a sudden career revival as an amiable, beloved and unusually active comedy elder statesman in the 1975 film The Sunshine Boys, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Burns, who became a centenarian in 1996, continued to work until just weeks before his death of cardiac arrest at his home in Beverly Hills. He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park cemetery in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. Lead Belly, sometimes credited as Leadbelly, African American folk and blues singer notable for his strong vocals, virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar, and the folk standards he introduced, including his renditions of "In the Pines", "Goodnight, Irene", "Midnight Special", "Cotton Fields", and "Boll Weevil", who recorded the earliest audio recording of the phrase "stay woke" (d. December 6, 1949) is #born Huddie William Ledbetter on a plantation, the younger of the two children of Sallie Brown and Wesley Ledbetter. Lead Belly usually played a twelve-string guitar, but he also played the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and windjammer. In some of his recordings, he sang while clapping his hands or stomping his foot. Lead Belly's songs covered a wide range of genres, including gospel music, blues, and folk music, as well as a number of topics, including women, liquor, prison life, racism, cowboys, work, sailors, cattle herding, and dancing. He also wrote songs about people in the news, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Jean Harlow, Jack Johnson, the Scottsboro Boys and Howard Hughes. In 1949, Lead Belly had a regular radio show, Folk Songs of America, broadcast on station WNYC in New York, on Henrietta Yurchenco's show on Sunday nights. Lead Belly was posthumously inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1988 and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2008. Though many releases credit him as "Leadbelly", he wrote his name as "Lead Belly". This is the spelling on his tombstone and is used by the Lead Belly Foundation. Lead Belly died in New York City, aged 61 of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease), a rare and terminal neurodegenerative disease that results in the progressive loss of motor neurons that control voluntary muscles. He is buried in the Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery in the municipality of his birth, Mooringsport, Louisiana, 8 miles (13 km) west of Blanchard, in Caddo Parish. DeForest Kelley, known to colleagues as "Dee", American actor, screenwriter, poet, and singer, known for his roles in Westerns and especially as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy of the USS Enterprise in the television and film series Star Trek (1966-1991) (d. June 11, 1999) is #born Jackson DeForest Kelley in Toccoa, Georgia, named after pioneering electronics engineer Lee de Forest. He began singing on local radio shows, including an appearance on WSB AM in Atlanta. As a result of Kelley's radio work, he won an engagement with Lou Forbes and his orchestra at the Paramount Theater. He made his film debut in New Moon (1940), and nearly scored the lead of This Gun for Hire (1942), but Alan Ladd was chosen instead. During World War II, Kelley served as an enlisted man in the United States Army Air Forces from March 10, 1943, to January 28, 1946, assigned to the First Motion Picture Unit with the rank of private first class. After an extended stay in Long Beach, California, Kelley decided to pursue an acting career and relocate to Southern California permanently, living for a time with his uncle Casey. He worked as an usher in a local theater to earn enough money for the move. Kelley's mother encouraged her son in his new career goal, but his father disliked the idea. While in California, Kelley was spotted by a Paramount Pictures scout while doing a United States Navy training film. Kelley's acting career began with the feature film Fear in the Night in 1947. The low-budget movie was a hit, bringing him to the attention of a national audience and giving Kelley reason to believe he would soon become a star. His next role, in Variety Girl, established him as a leading actor and resulted in the founding of his first fan club. Kelley did not become a leading man, however, and his wife Carolyn and he decided to move to New York City. He found work on stage and on live television, but after three years in New York, the Kelleys returned to Hollywood. In California, he received a role in an installment of You Are There, anchored by Walter Cronkite. He played ranch owner Bob Kitteridge in the 1949 episode "Legion of Old Timers" of the television series The Lone Ranger. This led to an appearance in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral as Morgan Earp (brother to Burt Lancaster's Wyatt Earp).[14] This role led to three movie offers, including Warlock with Henry Fonda and Anthony Quinn. DeForest Kelley appeared in three episodes of the television series, Science Fiction Theatre (season one, episode four, April 30, 1955, "Y.O.R.D."; season one, episode 34, December 17, 1955, "The Long Day"; and season two, episode 24, November 3, 1956, "Survival in Box Canyon". In 1957, he had a small role as a Southern officer in Raintree County, a Civil War film directed by Edward Dmytryk, alongside Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, and Lee Marvin. He also appeared in leading roles as a U.S. Navy submarine captain in the World War II-set television series, The Silent Service. He appeared in season one, episode five, "The Spearfish Delivers", as Commander Dempsey, and in the first episode of season two, "The Archerfish Spits Straight", as Lieutenant Commander Enright. His future Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy also appeared in two different episodes of the series around the same time. Kelley appeared three times in various portrayals of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral; the first was in 1955, as Ike Clanton in the television series You Are There. Two years later, in the 1957 film of that name, he played Morgan Earp. His third appearance was in a third-season Star Trek episode (broadcast originally on October 25, 1968), titled "Spectre of the Gun", this time portraying Tom McLaury. Kelley also appeared in episodes of The Donna Reed Show, Perry Mason, Tales of Wells Fargo, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Boots and Saddles, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, Death Valley Days, Riverboat, The Fugitive, Lawman, Bat Masterson, Gunsmoke, Have Gun - Will Travel, The Millionaire, and Laredo. He appeared in the 1962 episode of Route 66, "1800 Days to Justice" and "The Clover Throne" as Willis. He had a small role in the movie The View from Pompey's Head. For nine years, Kelley primarily played villains. He built up an extensive list of credits, alternating between television and motion pictures. He was afraid of typecasting, though, so he broke away from villains by starring in Where Love Has Gone and a television pilot called 333 Montgomery. The pilot was written by an ex-policeman named Gene Roddenberry, and a few years later, Kelley appeared in another Roddenberry pilot, Police Story (1967), that was again not developed into a series. Kelley also appeared in at least one radio drama, the 1957 episode of Suspense entitled "Flesh Peddler", in which series producer William M. Robson introduced him as "a bright new luminary in the Hollywood firmament". In 1956, nine years before being cast as Dr. McCoy, Kelley played a small supporting role as a medic in The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, in which he utters the diagnosis "This man's dead, Captain" and "That man is dead" to Gregory Peck. Kelley appeared as Lieutenant Commander James Dempsey in two episodes of the syndicated military drama The Silent Service, based on actual stories of the submarine service of the United States Navy. In 1962, he appeared in the Bonanza episode titled "The Decision", as a doctor sentenced to hang for the murder of a journalist. The judge in this episode was portrayed by John Hoyt, who later portrayed Dr. Phillip John Boyce, one of Leonard McCoy's predecessors, on the Star Trek pilot "The Cage". In 1963, he appeared in The Virginian episode "Man of Violence" as a "drinking" cavalry doctor with Leonard Nimoy as his patient (Nimoy's character did not survive). Perhaps not coincidentally, the episode was written by John D. F. Black, who went on to become a writer-producer on Star Trek. Just before Star Trek began filming, Kelley appeared as a doctor again, in the Laredo episode "The Sound of Terror". After refusing Roddenberry's 1964 offer to play Spock, Kelley played Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy from 1966 to 1969 in Star Trek. He reprised the character in a voice-over role in Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973-74), and the first six Star Trek motion pictures (1979 to 1991). In 1987, he also had a cameo in "Encounter at Farpoint", the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as Admiral Leonard McCoy, Starfleet Surgeon General Emeritus. Several aspects of Kelley's background became part of McCoy's characterization, including his pronunciation of "nuclear" as "nucular". Kelley became a good friend of Star Trek castmates William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, from their first meeting in 1964. During Trek's first season, Kelley's name was listed in the end credits along with the rest of the cast. Only Shatner and Nimoy were listed in the opening credits. As Kelley's role grew in importance during the first season, he received a pay raise to about 2,500 USD per episode and received third billing starting in the second season after Nimoy. Despite the show's recognition of Kelley as one of its stars, he was frustrated by the greater attention that Shatner received as its lead actor and that Nimoy received because of "Spockamania" among fans. Shy by his own admission, Kelley was the only cast member of the original Star Trek series program never to have written or published an autobiography; the authorized biography From Sawdust to Stardust (2005) was written posthumously by Terry Lee Rioux of Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Kelley regarded "The Empath" as his favorite Star Trek television episode. After Star Trek was cancelled in 1969, Kelley found himself a victim of the very typecasting he had so feared. In 1972, he was cast in the horror film Night of the Lepus. After that, Kelley made occasional appearances on television and in film, but essentially went into de facto retirement, other than playing McCoy in the Star Trek film series. By 1978, he was earning up to 50,000 USD (208,000 USD in 2022) annually from appearances at Star Trek conventions. Like other Star Trek actors, Kelley received little of the enormous profits that the franchise generated for Paramount, until Nimoy, as executive producer, helped arrange for Kelley to be paid 1M USD for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), which was his final live-action film appearance. In 1987, he appeared in the first Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "Encounter at Farpoint", in which he portrayed a 137-year-old Dr. McCoy. For his final film, Kelley provided the voice of Viking 1 in The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars. Later in life, Kelley developed an interest in poetry, eventually publishing the first of two books in an unfinished series, The Big Bird's Dream and The Dream Goes On. In a TLC interview done in the late 1990s, Kelley joked that one of his biggest fears was that the words etched on his gravestone would be "He's dead, Jim". Kelley's obituary in Newsweek began: "We're not even going to try to resist: He's dead, Jim". He stated the year before his death that his legacy would be the many people McCoy had inspired to become doctors; "That's something that very few people can say they've done. I'm proud to say that I have". DeForst Kelley had two first-hand UFO experiences, both of which he discussed on a 1986 episode of The Open Mind With Bill Jenkins radio show broadcast on KABC-AM radio station in Los Angeles, California: 1) the February 24, 1942 Battle Of Los Angeles, when a number of UFOs that came in over Los Angeles from over the Pacific ocean travelling at speeds more than twice that of conventional aircraft moved to various points over the city, triggering an anti-aircraft barrage that lasted all night into the early hours of February 25 (the Steven Spielberg film 1941 is loosely based on that and associated events; and 2) a cigar-shaped object in the sky in the 1950s. In 1991, Kelley received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1999, shortly before he died, he was awarded a Golden Boot award for his contribution to the genre of Western television and movies. January 20, 1929: #BOTD: #HBD! Arte Johnson, American actor and comedian (d. July 3, 2019), is #born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the son of Abraham Lincoln Johnson and Edythe Mackenzie (Golden) Johnson. Johnson attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he worked at the campus radio station and the UI Theater Guild with his brother Coslough "Cos" Johnson, and graduated in 1949. He sought employment in Chicago advertising agencies but was unsuccessful and left for New York City to work for Viking Press. In early 1954, Johnson performed in several New York nightclubs, including Le Ruban Bleu and The Village Vanguard. His first job in show business came when he impulsively stepped into an audition line and was cast in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Johnson appeared in Ben Bagley's The Shoestring Revue, which opened off-Broadway on February 28, 1955, at the President Theater in New York. Horneigh" (the last name pronounced "horn-eye," a "clean" variant of the vulgar term "horny"), the white-haired, trench coat-wearing "dirty old man" who repeatedly sought to seduce "Gladys Ormphby," (Ruth Buzzi's brown-clad "spinster" character) on a park bench. In 1976, he played the animated cartoon character "Misterjaw", a blue, German-accented shark (with a bow tie and top hat), who liked to leap out of the water and shout "HEEGotcha!" or "Gotcha!" at unsuspecting folks on The Pink Panther Laugh-and-a-Half Hour-and-a-Half Show. He also voiced the character "Rhubarb" on The Houndcats. Also in 1976, he appeared as a guest on Canadian TV show Celebrity Cooks with host Bruno Gerussi and a clip from his episode was featured in the opening credits until the show ended in 1987. In September 1977, Johnson appeared on an episode of the NBC daytime version of Wheel of Fortune as a substitute letter-turner, both to fill-in for an injured Susan Stafford, and to promote his short-lived NBC game show Knockout, which aired through early 1978. In 1979, he was cast as "Renfield," the comic sidekick of George Hamilton's Dracula in the surprise box office smash, Love At First Bite. In the course of the meeting, Heydrich outlined how European Jews would be rounded up and sent to extermination camps in the General Government (the occupied part of Poland), where they would be killed. Soon after the Invasion Of Poland in September 1939, the persecution of European Jewry was raised to unprecedented levels, but systematic killing of men, women and children only began in June 1941 after the onset of Operation Barbarossa against the Soviets. Bill Wyman plays bass on all except three tracks (which instead feature Richards on bass), and drummer Charlie Watts and lead singer Mick Jagger appear on all tracks. Piano duties were split by two session players: original Rolling Stones member Ian Stewart and frequent contributor Jack Nitzsche. Early sessions for the album occurred between 3 August 1966 and the 11th at Los Angeles' RCA Studios during the Rolling Stones' 1966 American Tour. David Hassinger was the engineer for the album. Several songs were worked on; the backing tracks of six songs that would appear on the album were recorded, as were those of "Let's Spend the Night Together" and "Who's Driving Your Plane?", the B-side of "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?", released as a single in late September. The band returned to London, and sessions continued at IBC Studios from August 31 to September 3. "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" was completed and released on 23 September before the Stones embarked on their seventh British tour, which lasted into early October and was their last UK tour until 1971. The second block of recording sessions for Between the Buttons began on 8 November at the newly opened Olympic Sound Studios in Barnes, London, alternating between Olympic and Pye Studios until 26 November. During this time, the bulk of the album was completed, including vocal and other overdubs on the previously recorded backing tracks and mixing. "Ruby Tuesday" was also completed. Around the same time, producer Andrew Loog Oldham was also preparing the US-only live album Got Live If You Want It!, a contractual requirement from London Records that contained live performances from their recent British tour as well as studio tracks overdubbed with audience noise. After that album's release on 10 December, a final overdubbing session for Buttons was held at Olympic Studios on 13 December 1966 before Oldham took the tapes back to RCA Studios in Hollywood for final mixing and editing.The album was recorded using four-track machines, with tracks of the initial sessions mixed down in order to free the tracks for use as overdubs. Mick Jagger felt this process lost the clarity of the songs, commenting during an interview that "we bounced it back to do overdubs so many times we lost the sound of it. [The songs] sounded so great, but later on, I was really disappointed with it." He commented further: "I don't know, it just isn't any good. 'Back Street Girl' is about the only one I like." We can start to help these endangered creatures by focusing on environmental issues. Penguins are fun and interesting animals that are unique in many different ways. There are currently over 18 different known species of penguin and some of them have been around the planet for well over 65 million years. They're a beloved animal thanks to many popular depictions in movies and children's stories, but they're also fascinating birds that have piqued the interest of many people all over the world. However, what most people don't realize is that penguin numbers around the world are dwindling. Every year, the penguin population shrinks at an alarming rate and most of the world isn't aware because they don't get to see "real" penguins in their natural habitat. C. Kaelin especially, who secretly broadcast "Radio First Termer" a pirate radio station which operated in January 1971 in Saigon during the Vietnam War (b. August 15, 1948) #dies on a Friday at Baylor Medical Center at Garland of acute respiratory distress syndrome, aged 63. He is survived by his two sons, Dallas with daughter in law Cori Higbee, Chandler with daughter in law Chelsea Herrick, brothers John and Dobie, and sisters Pamela, Francesca and Haven. Visitations were held from 6-8pm, Wednesday, January 25th at Restland Funeral Home, and services wer held 3:30pm, Thursday, January 26th, at Restland Memorial Chapel. He is buried at Restland Memorial Park in an unincorporated area of Dallas County, Texas between Dallas and Richardson. Dave Delay was born Clyde David DeLay in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in nearby Richardson. "He was very funny and friendly," said Ted Dodson of Grapevine, a friend since their days at Richardson High School. Mr. Dodson remembers his friend riding around Richardson with six people packed into his Corvair convertible. Mr. DeLay joined the Air Force after graduating from Richardson High in 1967. He served as an inventory specialist and was honored for his outstanding contributions during the 30 days he volunteered for a security police assignment. He was wounded when his supply convoy was attacked. He did not realize he had been wounded until he was back at the base and preparing to shower. A friend spotted the hole in his leg. "The adrenaline was going so high, he didn't know he'd been shot," his son said. Mr. DeLay was trained as a radio studio engineer during his third tour in Vietnam. Resentment was growing among the troops, who wanted better access to current music and better news coverage of the war and conditions in Vietnam. He set up his pirate station in a secret improvised studio in the back room of a Saigon brothel, placing mattresses on the walls of his studio to block any bawdy noises. DeLay had help from his buddies in the Air Force police, who protected his operation. The station broadcast for 63 hours over 21 nights between January 1-21, 1971. The station played "hard acid rock" such as Steppenwolf, Bloodrock, Three Dog Night, Led Zeppelin, Sugarloaf, the James Gang, and Iron Butterfly, bands which were popular among the troops, but largely ignored by the American Forces Vietnam Network. The music was mixed with antiwar commentary, skits poking fun at the U.S. Air Force and Lyndon B. Johnson, and raunchy sex and drug oriented jokes. Mr. DeLay shut down the station when he felt his police friends were in danger of being discovered. In January 1995 J. C. Kaelin digitized .wav sound files of this broadcast and posted them to Usenet .wav newsgroups shortly thereafter, and when he founded EarthStation1.com on March 26, 1996, it opened with a collection of those sound files. In February 2006, the anonymous "Dave Rabbit" who made these broadcasts revealed himself in an email to J. C. as Dave DeLay. Dave Rabbit and EarthStation1's J. C. January 20, 1942: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Military Aviation: Maiden Flights: -- First flight of the Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant ("Giant"), a German military transport aircraft of World War II. It was a powered variant of the Me 321 military glider and was the largest land-based transport aircraft to fly during the war. A total of 213 are recorded as having been made, 15 being converted from the Me 321. The Me 323 was the result of a 1940 German requirement for a large assault glider in preparation for Operation Sea Lion, the projected invasion of Great Britain. The DFS 230 light glider had already proven its worth in the Battle of Fort Eben-Emael in Belgium (the first ever assault by gliderborne troops), and would later be used successfully in the invasion of Crete in 1941. However, in order to mount an invasion across the English Channel, the Germans would need to be able to airlift vehicles and other heavy equipment as part of an initial assault wave. Although Operation Sea Lion was cancelled, the requirement for a heavy air transport capability still existed, with the focus now on the forthcoming Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. On October 18, 1940, Junkers and Messerschmitt were given just 14 days to submit a proposal for a large transport glider. The emphasis was still very much on the assault role: the ambitious requirement was to be able to carry either an 88 mm gun and its half-track tractor, or a Panzer IV medium tank. The Junkers Ju 322 Mammut reached prototype form but was eventually scrapped due to difficulties in procuring the necessary high-grade timber for its all-wood construction and, as was discovered during the Mammut's only test flight, an unacceptably high degree of instability inherent in the design. The proposed Messerschmitt aircraft was originally designated Me 261w-partly borrowing the designation of the long-range Messerschmitt Me 261-then changed to Me 263 (later re-used for Messerschmitt's improved rocket fighter design), and eventually became the Me 321. Although the Me 321 saw considerable service on the Eastern Front as a transport, it was never used for its intended role as an assault glider. Early in 1941, as a result of feedback from Transport Command pilots in Russia, the decision was taken to produce a motorized variant of the Me 321, to be designated Me 323. It was decided to use French Gnome et Rhone GR14N radial engines rated at 1,180 PS (1,164 hp, 868 kW) for take-off as used in the Bloch MB.175 aircraft; using French engines was thought to place no burden on Germany's overstrained industry. Initial tests were conducted using four Gnome engines attached to a strengthened Me 321 wing, which gave a modest speed of 210 km/h (130 mph) - 80 km/h (50 mph) slower than the Ju 52 transport aircraft. A fixed undercarriage was fitted, which comprised four small wheels in a bogie at the front of the aircraft with six larger wheels in two lines of three at each side of the fuselage, partly covered by an aerodynamic fairing. The rear wheels were fitted with pneumatic brakes, and could stop the aircraft within 200 m (660 ft). The four-engined Me 323C was considered merely a stepping stone to the six-engined D series; it still required the five-engined Heinkel He 111Z Zwilling or the highly dangerous "vic-style" Troika-Schlepp formation of three Messerschmitt Bf 110 heavy fighters and underwing-mounted Walter HWK 109-500 Starthilfe rocket assisted takeoff units to get airborne when fully loaded, but it could return to base under its own power when empty. This was clearly not much better than the Me 321, so the V2 prototype became the first to have six engines and flew for the first time in early 1942, becoming the prototype for the D series aircraft. The selection of the six engines, and their specific placement on the wing's leading edge, were fitted to reduce torque-a trio of counterclockwise rotation engines mounted on the port wing, and a trio of clockwise rotation engines on the starboard wing as seen looking forward from behind each engine-resulting in the props rotating "away" from each other at the tops of their arcs. By September 1942, Me 323s were being delivered for use in the Tunisian campaign, and entered service in the Mediterranean theatre in November 1942. The high rate of loss among Axis shipping had made necessary a huge airlift of equipment across the Mediterranean to keep Rommel's Afrika Korps supplied. On April 22, 1943, a formation of 27 fully loaded Me 323s was being escorted across the Sicilian Straits by Messerschmitt Bf 109s of Jagdgeschwader 27 when it was intercepted by seven squadrons - Supermarine Spitfires (No. 1 Squadron SAAF) and Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawks (No. 7 South African Wing). Of the 27 transports, only six reached their destination; the remaining 21 of the Me 323s were lost while three of the P-40s were shot down by the escorts. A total of 198 Me 323s were built before production ceased in April 1944. There were several production versions, beginning with the D-1. Later D- and E- versions differed in the choice of power plant and in defensive armament, with improvements in structural strength, total cargo load and fuel capacity also being implemented. Nonetheless, the Me 323 remained significantly underpowered. There was a proposal to install six BMW 801 radials, but this did not occur. The Me 323 was also a short-range aircraft, with a typical range (loaded) of 1,000-1,200 km (620-750 mi). Despite this, the limited numbers of Me 323s in service were an asset to the Germans, and saw extensive use. No complete aircraft survives, but the Luftwaffenmuseum der Bundeswehr (Air Force Museum of the German Federal Armed Forces) in Berlin has a Me 323 main wing spar in its collection. A ruined but complete wreck was found in 2012, in the sea near La Maddalena, an island near Sardinia, Italy. The aircraft lies in around 60 m (200 ft) of water, around 8 nautical miles (15 km) from the coast. While gathering speed, a roll-control oscillation caused a fin of the port-side wingtip-mounted missile and then the starboard stabilator to scrape the ground, and the aircraft then began to veer off the runway. The test pilot, Phil Oestricher, decided to lift off to avoid a potential crash, safely landing six minutes later. The slight damage was quickly repaired. The official first flight of the F-16 occurred on time on February 2, 1974, a 90-minute flight at the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB, California. The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta. The Fighting Falcon's key features include a frameless bubble canopy for better visibility, side-mounted control stick to ease control while maneuvering, an ejection seat reclined 30 degrees from vertical to reduce the effect of g-forces on the pilot, and the first use of a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire flight control system that helps to make it an agile aircraft. The F-16 has an internal M61 Vulcan cannon and 11 locations for mounting weapons and other mission equipment. The F-16's official name is "Fighting Falcon", but "Viper" is commonly used by its pilots and crews, due to a perceived resemblance to a viper snake as well as the Colonial Viper starfighter on Battlestar Galactica which aired at the time the F-16 entered service. In addition to active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve Command, and Air National Guard units, the aircraft is also used by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team, and as an adversary/aggressor aircraft by the United States Navy. January 20, 1984: #DOTD: #RIP: Johnny Weissmuller, Austro-Hungarian-born American champion competition swimmer, Olympic gold medalist, Olympic bronze medalist, water polo player and actor (b. June 2, 1904) #dies from pulmonary edema at the age of 79. He was buried just outside Acapulco, Valle de La Luz at the Valley of the Light Cemetery. As his coffin was lowered into the ground, a recording of the Tarzan yell he invented was played three times, at his request. He was honored with a 21-gun salute, befitting a head-of-state, which was arranged by Senator Ted Kennedy and President Ronald Reagan. Weissmuller was known for playing Edgar Rice Burroughs' ape man Tarzan in films of the 1930s and 1940s and for having one of the best competitive swimming records of the 20th century. Weissmuller was one of the world's fastest swimmers in the 1920s, winning five Olympic gold medals for swimming and one bronze medal for water polo. He was the first to break the one minute barrier for 100-meter freestyle, and the first to swim 440-yard freestyle under five minutes. He won fifty-two U.S. national championships, set more than 50 world records (spread over both freestyle and backstroke), and was purportedly undefeated in official competition for the entirety of his competitive career. After retiring from competitions, he became the sixth actor to portray Tarzan, a role he played in twelve feature films. Dozens of other actors have also played Tarzan, but Weissmuller is by far the best known. January 20, 1936: #DOTD: #RIP: George V, King Of The United Kingdom And The British Dominions And Emperor Of India from May 6, 1910 until his death (b. June 3, 1865) #dies at Sandringham House in Norfolk, England aged 70 by a secretly administered lethal injection. George suffered from smoking-related health problems throughout much of his later reign. In November 1928, he fell seriously ill with septicaemia, and never fully recovered. The death of his favourite sister, Victoria, on December 3, 1935 depressed him deeply. On the evening of January 15, 1936, the King took to his bedroom at Sandringham House complaining of a cold; he remained in the room until his death. He became gradually weaker, drifting in and out of consciousness. On the day he died, his physicians, led by Lord Dawson, 1st Viscount Dawson of Penn, physician to the British Royal Family and President of the Royal College of Physicians from 1931 to 1937, issued a bulletin with the words "The King's life is moving peacefully towards its close." Dawson's private diary, unearthed after his death and made public in 1986, revealed two things: 1) that the King's last words, a mumbled "God damn you!", were addressed to his nurse, Catherine Black, when she gave him a sedative that night; and 2) Dawson, who supported the "gentle growth of euthanasia", admitted in that diary that he ended the King's life: "At about 11 o'clock it was evident that the last stage might endure for many hours, unknown to the Patient but little comporting with that dignity and serenity which he so richly merited and which demanded a brief final scene. Hours of waiting just for the mechanical end when all that is really life has departed only exhausts the onlookers & keeps them so strained that they cannot avail themselves of the solace of thought, communion or prayer. I therefore decided to determine the end and injected (myself) morphia gr.3/4 [grains] and shortly afterwards cocaine gr.1 [grains] into the distended jugular vein ... In about 1/4 an hour - breathing quieter - appearance more placid - physical struggle gone." Dawson's public stance on euthanasia was expressed later that year when he opposed a move in the Lords to legalise it because it "belongs to the wisdom and conscience of the medical profession and not to the realm of law". Since described as a "convenience killing", Lord Dawson's actions have also been described as murder. George V was succeeded by his eldest son, Edward VIII; Edward abdicated in December of that year, and was succeeded by his younger brother Albert, who took the regnal name George VI. George V was born George Frederick Ernest, with the last name Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (changed to Windsor in 1917) in Marlborough House, London during the reign of his grandmother Queen Victoria. George was the second son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, and was third in the line of succession to the British throne behind his father and his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor. From 1877 to 1892, George served in the Royal Navy, until the unexpected death of his elder brother in early 1892 put him directly in line for the throne. Following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, George's father ascended the throne as Edward VII, and George was created Prince of Wales. He became king-emperor on his father's death in 1910. George's reign saw the rise of socialism, communism, fascism, Irish republicanism, and the Indian independence movement, all of which radically changed the political landscape of the British Empire, which itself reached its territorial peak by the beginning of the 1920s. The Parliament Act 1911 established the supremacy of the elected British House Of Commons over the unelected House of Lords. As a result of the First World War (1914-1918), the empires of his first cousins Nicholas II of Russia and Wilhelm II of Germany fell, while the British Empire expanded to its greatest effective extent. In 1917, George became the first monarch of the House of Windsor, which he renamed from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha as a result of anti-German public sentiment. January 20, 1891: #DOTD: #RIP: Kalakaua Of Hawaii, sometimes called The Merrie Monarch, the last king and penultimate monarch of the Kingdom Of Hawai'i, reigning from February 12, 1874, until his death (b. November 16, 1836) #dies aged 54 in San Francisco, California at 2:35 pm of Bright's Disease (inflammation of the kidneys). After a state funeral in California and a second one in Honolulu, the king's remains were buried in the Royal Mausoleum at Mauna 'Ala on February 15, 1891. In a ceremony officiated by his sister Lili'uokalani on June 24, 1910, his remains, and those of his family, were transferred to the underground Kalakaua Crypt after the main mausoleum building had been converted into a chapel. Kalakaua Of Hawaii was born David La'amea Kamananakapu Mahinulani Naloiaehuokalani Lumialani Kalakaua at 2:00 a.m. to Caesar Kaluaiku Kapa_akea and Analea Keohokalole in the grass hut compound belonging to his maternal grandfather 'Aikanaka, at the base of Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu on the island of O'ahu. Succeeding King Lunalilo, he was elected to the vacant throne of Hawai'i against the former Queen Emma. Kalakaua had a convivial personality and enjoyed entertaining guests with his singing and ukulele playing. At his coronation and his birthday jubilee, the hula dance, which had hitherto been banned in public in the kingdom, became a celebration of Hawaiian culture. During Kalakaua's reign, the Reciprocity Treaty of 1875 brought great prosperity to the kingdom. Its renewal continued the prosperity but allowed United States to have exclusive use of Pearl Harbor. In 1881, Kalakaua took a trip around the world to encourage the immigration of contract sugar plantation workers. He wanted Hawaiians to broaden their education beyond their nation. He instituted a government-financed program to sponsor qualified students to be sent abroad to further their education. Two of his projects, the statue of Kamehameha I and the rebuilding of 'Iolani Palace, were expensive endeavors but are popular tourist attractions today. Extravagant expenditures and Kalakaua's plans for a Polynesian confederation played into the hands of annexationists who were already working towards a United States takeover of Hawai'i. In 1887, Kalakaua was pressured to sign a new constitution that made the monarchy little more than a figurehead position. After his brother William Pitt Leleiohoku II died in 1877, the king named their sister Lili'uokalani as heir-apparent. She acted as regent during his absences from the country. Gerry Mulligan was born Gerald Joseph Mulligan in Queens Village, Queens, New York. Gerry Mulligan is primarily known as one of the leading jazz baritone saxophonists, playing the instrument with a light and airy tone in the era of cool jazz. He was also a significant arranger, working with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and others. Mulligan's pianoless quartet of the early 1950s with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the best cool jazz groups. Mulligan also played several other reed instruments. Her death came three days after that of Johnny Otis, the man who had discovered her in the 1950s. Thirty-six days after her death, her sideman Red Holloway died. Her funeral was presided over by Reverend Al Sharpton and took place in Gardena, California eight days after her death. Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, and Christina Aguilera each gave a musical tribute. She was buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Los Angeles County, California. She was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles, California to Dorothy Hawkins, who was 14 at the time. Though her father has never been identified, James speculated that she was the daughter of the famous pool player Rudolf "Minnesota Fats" Wanderone, whom she met briefly in 1987. Her mother was frequently absent from their apartment in Watts, conducting relationships with various men, and James lived with a series of foster parents, most notably "Sarge" and "Mama" Lu. James referred to her mother as "the Mystery Lady". Starting her career in 1954, she gained fame with hits such as "The Wallflower" (aka "Roll With Me Henry" and "Dance With Me Henry"), "At Last", "Tell Mama", "Something's Got a Hold on Me", and "I'd Rather Go Blind". She faced a number of personal problems, including heroin addiction, severe physical abuse, and incarceration, before making a musical comeback in the late 1980s with the album Seven Year Itch. James's powerful, deep, earthy voice bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll. She won six Grammy Awards and 17 Blues Music Awards. DeMille, Fritz Lang, and Frank Capra, who made 85 films in 38 years before turning to television (b. July 16, 1907) #dies at the age of 82, from congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. She had indicated that she wanted no funeral service. In accordance with her wishes, her remains were cremated and the ashes scattered from a helicopter over Lone Pine, California, where she had made some of her Western films. Barbara Stanwyck was born Ruby Catherine Stevens in Brooklyn, New York. At the suggestion of theatrical producer and impresario David Belasco, Ruby changed her name to Barbara Stanwyck by combining the first name of the title character in the play Barbara Frietchie with the last name of the actress in the play, Jane Stanwyck; both were found on a 1906 theater program. Barbara Stanwyck made her debut on stage in the chorus as a Ziegfeld girl in 1923 at age 16, and within a few years was acting in plays. Her first lead role, which was in the hit Burlesque (1927), established her as a Broadway star. Orphaned at the age of four and partially raised in foster homes, she always worked. One of her directors, Jacques Tourneur, said of her, "She only lives for two things, and both of them are work." In 1929, she began acting in talking pictures. Frank Capra chose her for his romantic drama Ladies of Leisure (1930). This led to additional leading roles which raised her profile, such as Night Nurse (1931), Baby Face (1933), and the controversial The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933).
