Poetry became immensely popular among the people in the Middle East in the later centuries. In Europe, poetry rose to prominence, especially during the Renaissance. Poetry was something exclusive to the rich and the elite in those times. Modern poetry emerged in the 19th century, with poets such as Alfred Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning rising to prominence. The 20th century saw poets such as Thomas Stearns Eliot and Robert Frost. Poetry saw some variations with poets such as Virginia Woolf, who gave poetry a modern touch. January 13: Stephen Foster Memorial Day: -- #DOTD: #RIP: Stephen Foster, American composer and songwriter, known as "the father of American music", American songwriter known primarily for his parlor and minstrel music (b. July 4, 1826) #dies in New York City on January 13, 1864 at the age of 37. There are different accounts of his death. His writing partner George Cooper found him, weakened from a fever, still alive but lying in a pool of blood at his hotel in the Bowery in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, having fallen and cut his neck, and that he died at Bellevue Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the United States, in the Kips Bay section of Manhattan, also in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Cooper, who was with Foster until he died, said: "He lay there on the floor, naked, suffering horribly. He had wonderful big brown eyes, and they looked up at me with an appeal I can never forget. He whispered, 'I'm done for.'" However, Foster's brother Morrison, who was not in New York and said Foster was ill and cut his neck on a washbasin, mentioned broken crockery, and also said Foster had a "large knife" for cutting up apples and turnips. Historian JoAnne O'Connell speculates in her biography, The Life and Songs of Stephen Foster, that Foster may have killed himself, a common occurrence during the Civil War. It may well be that Morrison Foster covered up his brother's suicide. Evelyn Morneweck, Morrison Foster's daughter, also said the family would have covered up the suicide of Stephen Foster if they could have. Stephen Foster was born Stephen Collins Foster in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania to William Barclay Foster and Eliza Clayland Tomlinson Foster, with three older sisters and six older brothers. His parents were of Ulster Scots and English descent. He wrote more than 200 songs, including "Oh! Susanna", "Hard Times Come Again No More", "Camptown Races", "Old Folks at Home" ("Swanee River"), "My Old Kentucky Home", "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair", "Old Black Joe", and "Beautiful Dreamer", and many of his compositions remain popular today. He has been identified as "the most famous songwriter of the nineteenth century" and may be the most recognizable American composer in other countries. Most of his handwritten music manuscripts are lost, but editions issued by publishers of his day feature in various collections. Title 36 of the United States Code designates January 13 as Stephen Foster Memorial Day, a United States National Observance Day. The law took effect on November 2, 1966, and the day was first observed in January 1967. On March 31, 1936, the U.S. Congress authorized the minting of 15,000 silver half dollar pieces in honor of the Cincinnati Musical Center, known as the Cincinnati Musical Center Half Dollar, produced with the stated purpose of commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Cincinnati, Ohio, as a center of music, and which featured Stephen Foster on the obverse of the coin. Members of Congress' Commission of Fine Arts objected to the depiction of Foster on the obverse, finding no connection between Foster, who died in 1864, and the supposed anniversary. Melish likely held back much of the issue for later resale, and with few pieces available, prices for the set spiked, rising to over five times the issue price. A technician of the family program that usually broadcast from Kaunas once a week was on the air, calling for anyone who could help to broadcast to the world in as many different languages as possible about the Soviet army and tanks killing unarmed people in Lithuania. Within an hour, the studio was filled with several university professors broadcasting in several languages. The studio received a threatening phone call from the Soviet army division of Kaunas (possibly the 7th Guards Airborne Division of the VDV). The second phone call from the Soviet army division followed shortly, with a commander stating that "they would not try to take over the studio so long as no misinformation is given". This was all broadcast live. The Kaunas TV station was using Juragiai and Sitkunai transmitters as retranslators. Following these two attacks, large crowds (20,000 during the night, more than 50,000 in the morning) of independence supporters gathered around the Supreme Council building. People started building anti-tank barricades and setting up defences inside surrounding buildings. Provisional chapels were set up inside and outside the Supreme Council building. Members of the crowd prayed, sang and shouted pro-independence slogans. Despite columns of military trucks, BMPs and tanks moving into the vicinity of the Supreme Council, Soviet military forces retreated instead of attacking. Among the members of the barricade were two basketball players who would later play for the Lithuanian national team, Gintaras Einikis and Alvydas Pazdrazdis. Immediately after the attacks, the Lithuanian Supreme Council issued a letter to the people of the Soviet Union and to the rest of the world denouncing the attacks and calling for foreign governments to recognise that the Soviet Union had committed an act of aggression against a sovereign nation. Following the first news reports from Lithuania, the government of Norway appealed to the United Nations. The government of Poland expressed their solidarity with the people of Lithuania and denounced the actions of the Soviet army. The reaction from the United States government was somewhat muted as the U.S. itself was heavily preoccupied with the imminent onset of Operation Desert Storm against Iraq and worried about possible wider consequences if they were to offend the Soviets at that critical juncture. President George H.W. Bush denounced the incident, but was notably careful not to criticize Gorbachev directly, instead directing his remarks at "Soviet leaders." ========= The January Events began on a Friday morning, January 11, 1991, centered in its capital, Vilnius, along with related actions in its suburbs and in the cities of Alytus, Siauliai, Varena, and Kaunas, when Chairman of the Parliament Vytautas Landsbergis and Prime Minister Albertas Simenas were presented with an ultimatum from the so-called "Democratic Congress Of Lithuania" (Soviet loyalists) demanding that they comply with Gorbachev's request that the constitution of the USSR in Lithuania be restored by 15:00 that day. The Treaty Of Cahuenga, was not a formal treaty between nations but an informal agreement between rival military forces in which the Californios gave up fighting. The treaty was drafted in English and Spanish by Jose Antonio Carrillo, approved by American Lieutenant-Colonel John C. Fremont and Mexican Governor Andres Pico on January 13, 1847 at Campo de Cahuenga in what is now Universal City, California. The treaty called for the Californios to give up their artillery, and provided that all prisoners from both sides be immediately freed. Those Californios who promised not to again take up arms during the war, and to obey the laws and regulations of the United States, were allowed to peaceably return to their homes and ranchos. They were to be allowed the same rights and privileges as were allowed to citizens of the United States, and were not to be compelled to take an oath of allegiance until a treaty of peace was signed between the United States and Mexico, and were given the privilege of leaving the country if they wished to do so. Under the later Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, Mexico formally ceded Alta California and other territories to the United States, and the disputed border of Texas was fixed at the Rio Grande. Pico, like nearly all the Californios, became an American citizen with full legal and voting rights. January 13, 1898: Discrimination: Jewish History: The History Of France: Fin De Siecle: Antisemitism: The Dreyfus Affair (French: Affaire Dreyfus): J'accuse...! (French: "I accuse...!") -- Emile Zola's "J'accuse...!" is published in the newspaper L'Aurore, exposing the Dreyfus Affair. Less than a month later, on February 7, 1898, Zola is brought to trial for libel for writing it. Emile Edouard Charles Antoine Zola was a French novelist, playwright, journalist, the best-known practitioner of the literary school of naturalism, and an important contributor to the development of theatrical naturalism. He was a major figure in the political liberalization of France and was nominated for the first and second Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901 and 1902. In his letter "J'accuse...!", Zola addressed President of France Felix Faure and accused the government of anti-Semitism and the unlawful jailing of Alfred Dreyfus, a French Army General Staff officer who was sentenced to lifelong penal servitude for espionage. Zola pointed out judicial errors and lack of serious evidence. The letter was printed on the front page of the newspaper and caused a stir in France and abroad. Zola was prosecuted for libel and found guilty on 23 February 1898. He was sentenced to jail and was removed from the Legion d'honneur, the highest French order of merit for military and civil merits. To avoid jail time, Zola fled to England, and stayed there until the French Government collapsed in 1899 as a result of the sudden death of French President Faure from an apoplectic seizure in the Elysee Palace on 16 February 1899, while engaged in sexual activities in his office with 30-year-old Marguerite Steinheil, a French woman famous for her many love affairs with important men who was later charged with the murder of her husband and mother. Zola continued to defend Dreyfus after his return to France. Four years after this famous letter to the president, Zola died from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a blocked chimney. On 4 June 1908, Zola's remains were laid to rest in the Pantheon in Paris. January 13, 1922: #BOTD: Bud Anderson, United States Air Force officer, a triple ace of World War II, and the oldest and highest scoring living American fighter ace until his death (d. May 17, 2024), is #born Clarence Emil Anderson in Oakland, California. During the war he was the highest scoring flying ace in his P-51 Mustang squadron. Towards the end of Anderson's two combat tours in Europe in 1944 he was promoted to major at 22, a young age even for a highly effective officer in wartime. After the war Anderson became a well regarded fighter test pilot, and a fighter squadron and wing commander. He served his wing commander tour in combat in the Vietnam War. He retired as a full colonel in 1972, after which he worked in flight test management for McDonnell Douglas.. He was a close friend of Brigadier General Chuck Yeager during and after the end of World War II, where both served in the 357th Fighter Group (also known as "The Yoxford Boys" because their home airfield was located in Yoxford, a village in East Suffolk, England), the two of them being relied upon to spot enemy fighters during missions because they both had better than 20-20 eyesight. A member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, Anderson has remained a sought-after speaker at aviation and military events well into his 90s. On July 19, 2008, Anderson was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. In 2013, he was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. A life-size bronze statue of him was installed at the Auburn Municipal Airport. In 2015, he along with other flying aces received the Congressional Gold Medal, in recognition of "their heroic military service and defense of the country's freedom throughout the history of aviation warfare." Anderson turned 100 in January 2022. His hometown Auburn honored him with a grand celebration. He was the last living American triple flying ace of World War II. January 13, 1935: The Aftermath Of World War I: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The League Of Nations Mandates: The Territory Of The Saar Basin: The 1935 Saar Status Referendum: -- A plebiscite in the Territory of the Saar Basin results in a 90.3% vote to join Nazi Germany. The Territory of the Saar Basin was a region of Germany occupied and governed by the United Kingdom and France from 1920 to 1935 under a League Of Nations mandate. It had its own flag (adopted on July 28, 1920): a blue, white, and black horizontal tricolour. The blue and white stood for Bavaria, and white and black for Prussia, out of whose lands the Saar Territory was formed. The territory closely corresponds with the modern German state of Saarland, but was slightly smaller in area. Under the Treaty Of Versailles, the highly industrialized Saar Basin, including the Saar Coal District, was to be occupied and governed by the United Kingdom and France under a League Of Nations mandate for a period of fifteen years. Its coalfields were also to be ceded to France. During this time, the Saar Territory was governed by a five-person Governing Commission (German: Regierungskommission; abbreviated Reko) made up of representatives of the occupation forces. Under the terms of the mandate, the Commission had to include at least one French person and one German resident of the Saar. After the fifteen years, a plebiscite would be implemented to determine the Saar's future status. In 1933, a considerable number of political opponents of National Socialism moved to the Saar, as it was the only part of Germany that remained under foreign occupation following World War I. As a result, anti-Nazi groups agitated for the Saarland to remain under British and French occupation under a League Of Nations mandate. However, as most of the region's population was German, the mandate was unpopular. With Adolf Hitler anxious for the propaganda advantages of the return of the Saar to Germany, Joseph Goebbels designed a concerted campaign to sway voters. The support of the local Catholic authorities for a return also helped, as did concerns about Bolshevism, against which Hitler was seen as a bulwark.[10] With a voter participation of 98%, the result of the plebiscite was that the overwhelming majority, 90.8%, voted to re-join the German Reich, with only 8.8% wanting to retain the status quo, primarily as they did not wish to be ruled by Nazis. A third option of joining France received 0.4% of the vote. Following the vote, Hitler announced that Germany "had no further territorial demands to make of France." On 17 January 1935, the territory's reunion with Germany was approved by the League Council. He established a legal practice in Richmond after graduating from the Howard University School of Law. A member of the Democratic Party, Wilder won election to the Virginia Senate in 1969. He remained in that chamber until 1986, when he took office as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, becoming the first African American to hold statewide office in Virginia. In the 1989 Virginia gubernatorial election, Wilder narrowly defeated Republican Marshall Coleman. Wilder left the gubernatorial office in 1994, as the Virginia constitution prohibited governors from seeking re-election. He briefly sought the 1992 Democratic presidential nomination, but withdrew from the race before the first primaries. He also briefly ran as an independent in the 1994 Virginia Senate election before dropping out of the race. Wilder returned to elective office in 2005, when he became the first directly-elected Mayor of Richmond. James Augustine Aloysius Joyce contributed to the modernist avant-garde. and is Joyce is best known for Ulysses (1922), a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in a variety of literary styles, perhaps most prominently stream of consciousness. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). His other writings include three books of poetry, a play, his published letters and occasional journalism. Joyce was born in 41 Brighton Square, Rathgar, Dublin, into a middle-class family on the way down. A brilliant student, he briefly attended the Christian Brothers-run O'Connell School before excelling at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, despite the chaotic family life imposed by his father's alcoholism and unpredictable finances. In 1933 Random House, which had the rights to publish the entire book in the United States, decided to bring a test case to challenge the de facto ban, so as to publish the work without fear of prosecution. It therefore made an arrangement to import the edition published in France, and to have a copy seized by the U.S. Customs Service when the ship carrying the work arrived. Although Customs had been told in advance of the anticipated arrival of the book, the local official declined to confiscate it, stating "everybody brings that in." He and his superior were finally convinced to seize the work. The United States Attorney then took seven months before deciding whether to proceed further. In keeping Kovacs's wishes, a simple service was held at the Beverly Hills Community Presbyterian Church. The pallbearers included Jack Lemmon, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Billy Wilder, and Mervyn LeRoy, and George Burns, Groucho Marx, Edward G. January 1-13, 1966: Labor Union Disputes (Trade Union Disputes): Strikes (Strike Actions, Labor Strikes, Labour Strikes): Transportation Strikes: New York City Transit Strikes: The 1966 New York City Transit Strike -- At 1:37 A.M., The Transit Workers Union (TWU) announces through its Secretary-Treasurer Doug MacMahon that the TWU was recommending settlement of the strike after reaching an agreement on a benefits package with The New York City Transit Authority (TA). The package, worth over 60M USD, included wages increases from 3.18 USD to 4.14 USD an hour, an additional paid holiday, increased pension benefits, and other gains. Gains averaged nine percent for the next eight years. The 1966 New York City Transit Strike began on New Year's Day, January 1, 1966, when the last trains rolled at 8:02 am. The strike was called by the TWU and the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) after the expiration of their contract with the TA. An injunction to end the strike was issued later that day, under the 1947 Condon-Wadlin Act. On January 2, the TWU reduced its economic demands, but the TA responded only by getting a judge's order for the arrest of eight union leaders involved in the strike, including TWU's founder, Irish-born Mike Quill, who had been the union's president since its founding at a Clan na Gael' Irish republican meeting in a cafeteria at Columbus Circle on April 12, 1934; the other leaders were Matthew Guinan, Frank Sheehan, Daniel Gilmartin, Ellis Van Riper, and Mark Kavanagh of the TWU and John Rowland, William Mangus, and Frank Kleess of the ATU. . The arrests were set for 1 a.m. on January 4. Quill was obviously in ill health, but immediately before his arrest he told reporters at the Americana Hotel, "The judge can drop dead in his black robes. I don't care if I rot in jail. I will not call off the strike." Quill spent little time in jail: his poor health soon had him transferred to Bellevue Hospital and later to Mount Sinai Medical Hospital, leaving TWU Secretary-Treasurer Doug MacMahon (a close associate of Quill's, with him since the union's founding) to lead the strike. On January 10, 15,000 workers picketed City Hall. Negotiations moved forward through mediators, with movement from both sides until a final agreement was reached on January 13th. The strike effectively ended all service on the subway and buses in the city, affecting millions of commuters. It was an ominous beginning for the mayoralty of John V. Lindsay, but is perhaps better remembered for the jailing of Quill and for his death only weeks afterwards; Quill's health at first seemed to be improving; he was actually released from hospital January 25. He gave a speech to the victorious strikers and another press conference at the Americana, but the apparent improvement in his health was an illusion: he died on January 28. In the early 1940s, Henry Ford experimented with making plastic parts for automobiles. These experiments resulted in what was described as a "plastic car made from soybeans." Although this automobile never made it into the museum's collections, it remains a good example of innovative design. The "Soybean Car" was actually a plastic-bodied car unveiled by Henry Ford on August 13, 1941 at Dearborn Days, an annual community festival. The frame, made of tubular steel, had 14 plastic panels attached to it. The car weighed 2000 lbs., 1000 lbs. lighter than a steel car. The exact ingredients of the plastic panels are unknown because no record of the formula exists today. One article claims that they were made from a chemical formula that, among many other ingredients, included soybeans, wheat, hemp, flax and ramie; while the man who was instrumental in creating the car, Lowell E. Overly, claims it was "soybean fiber in a phenolic resin with formaldehyde used in the impregnation" The outbreak of World War II suspended all auto production, and therefore the plastic car experiment. A second unit was in production at the time the war broke out, but the project was abandoned. December 8, 1863) #dies of pneumonia in San Francisco, California at age 60 shortly before he went to trial. He is buried at Home Of Peace Cemetery And Emanu-El Mausoleum in Colma, San Mateo County, California. Albert Abrams was born in San Francisco, California. His medical claims were challenged from the outset. Towards the end of his life, and again shortly after his death, many of his machines and conclusions were demonstrated to be intentionally deceptive or false. His "Dynomizer" looked something like a radio, and Abrams claimed it could diagnose any known disease from a single drop of blood or alternatively the subject's handwriting. He performed diagnoses on dried blood samples sent to him on pieces of paper in envelopes through the mail. Apparently Abrams even claimed he could conduct medical practice over the telephone with his machines, and that he could determine personality characteristics. The Dynomizer was big business; by 1918, courses in spondylotherapy and ERA cost 200 USD (3,150 USD in 2014); equipment was leased at about 200 USD with a monthly 5 USD charge thereafter. The lessee had to sign a contract stating the device would never be opened. Abrams explained that this would disrupt their delicate adjustment, but the rule also served to prevent the Abrams devices from being examined. He then widened his claims to treating the diagnosed diseases. Abrams came up with new and even more impressive gadgets, the "Oscilloclast" and the "Radioclast", which came with tables of frequencies that were designed to "attack" specific diseases. Clients were told cures required repeated treatments. Dynomizer operators tended to give alarming diagnoses, involving combinations of such maladies as cancer, diabetes and syphilis. Abrams often included a disease called "bovine syphilis", unknown to other medical practitioners. He claimed the Oscilloclast was capable of defeating most of these diseases, most of the time. By 1921, there were claimed to be 3,500 practitioners using ERA technology. Conventional medical practitioners were extremely suspicious.
