January 10: Peculiar People Day (Eccentrics Day, Eccentricity Day): -- Eccentricity (also called Quirkiness) is an unusual or odd behavior on the part of an individual. This behavior would typically be perceived as unusual or unnecessary, without being demonstrably maladaptive. Eccentricity is contrasted with normal behavior, the nearly universal means by which individuals in society solve given problems and pursue certain priorities in everyday life. People who consistently display benignly eccentric behavior are labeled as "eccentrics". English utilitarian thinker John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) wrote that "the amount of eccentricity in a society has generally been proportional to the amount of genius, mental vigour, and moral courage which it contained", and mourned a lack of eccentricity as "the chief danger of the time". Edith Sitwell (1887-1964) wrote that eccentricity is "often a kind of innocent pride", also saying that geniuses and aristocrats are called eccentrics because "they are entirely unafraid of and uninfluenced by the opinions and vagaries of the crowd". Eccentricity is also associated with great wealth - what would be considered signs of insanity in a poor person, some may accept as eccentricity in wealthy people. Eccentricity is often associated with genius, intellectual giftedness, or creativity. People may perceive the individual's eccentric behavior as the outward expression of their unique intelligence or creative impulse. In this vein, the eccentric's habits are incomprehensible not because they are illogical or the result of madness, but because they stem from a mind so original that it cannot be conformed to societal norms. January 10 is your opportunity to recognize and celebrate those who refuse to conform to the world's idea of normal. It is always the people who are termed 'peculiar', 'different', 'strange', or 'abnormal' that set the world in motion because they live "out of the box". The term 'peculiar people' is derived from the phrase 'chosen people' from the Bible book Deuteronomy. It means "set apart" or "treasured people", which is a wonderful way of looking at ourselves and other people. If we see ourselves as valuable, we make valuable differences to the world around us. Society calls the people who do things differently than others 'peculiar' people. Instead of it being a negative tag, it is a badge of honor, because being different takes a courageous, adventurous, and inquisitive nature. Swimming upstream brings about change, and peculiar people are particular about not accepting harsh, unfair, or unjust systems. Part of the resilience and strength of people who make a difference has been their stance to stay true to themselves and not conform. The covenant was signed on June 28, 1919 as Part I of the Treaty Of Versailles. The first meeting of the Council Of The League took place on January 16, 1920, and the first meeting of Assembly Of The League took place in Geneva, Switzerland on November 15, 1920 with 41 nations represented. More than 20 nations later joined. In 1919 U.S. president Woodrow Wilson won the Nobel Peace Prize for his role as the leading architect of the League; however, the U.S. did not join due to a lack of support for the League in Congress. The League Of Nations (French: Societe Des Nations was the first worldwide intergovernmental organisation whose principal mission was to maintain world peace. Its other concerns included labour conditions, just treatment of native inhabitants, human and drug trafficking, the arms trade, global health, prisoners of war, and protection of minorities in Europe. The diplomatic philosophy behind the League represented a fundamental shift from the preceding hundred years. The League lacked its own armed force and depended on the victorious First World War Allies (Britain, France, Italy and Japan were the permanent members of the Executive Council) to enforce its resolutions, keep to its economic sanctions, or provide an army when needed. The Great Powers were often reluctant to do so. Sanctions could hurt League members, so they were reluctant to comply with them. During the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, when the League accused Italian soldiers of targeting International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement medical tents, Benito Mussolini responded that "the League is very well when sparrows shout, but no good at all when eagles fall out." At its greatest extent from September 28, 1934 to February 23, 1935, it had 58 members. January 10, 1769: #BOTD: Michel Ney, German-French general (d. December 7, 1815) is #born in the town of Sarrelouis, in the French province of the Three Bishoprics, along the French-German border. Marshal of the Empire Michel Ney, 1st Duke of Elchingen, 1st Prince of Moscow (January 10. 1769 - December 7, 1815), popularly known as Marshal Ney, was a French cavalry soldier and military commander during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. He was one of the original 18 Marshals of the Empire created by Napoleon. He was known as Le Rougeaud ("red faced" or "ruddy") by his men and nicknamed le Brave des Braves ("the bravest of the brave") by Napoleon. When Napoleon was defeated for the second and final time in the summer of 1815, Ney was arrested on 3 August 1815. On 6 December 1815, he was condemned, and on 7 December 1815 he was executed by firing squad in Paris near the Luxembourg Garden. He refused to wear a blindfold and was allowed the right to give the order to fire, reportedly saying: "Soldiers, when I give the command to fire, fire straight at my heart. Wait for the order. It will be my last to you. I protest against my condemnation. I have fought a hundred battles for France, and not one against her ... Soldiers, fire!". January 10, 1776: First Publications: -- Common Sense, a fifty page pamphlet by Thomas Paine advocating independence from Great Britain to people in the Thirteen Colonies, is first published by Philadelphia publisher Robert Bell. It sold over 500,000 copies in America and Europe, influencing, among others, the authors of the Declaration Of Independence. Writing in clear and persuasive prose, Paine collected various moral and political arguments to encourage common people in the Colonies to fight for egalitarian government. It was published anonymously at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time (2.5 million), it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history. As of 2006, it remains the all-time best-selling American title and is still in print today. Common Sense made public a persuasive and impassioned case for independence, which had not yet been given serious intellectual consideration. Paine connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity, and he structured Common Sense as if it were a sermon. Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era." The Spindletop gusher blew for nine days at a rate estimated at 100,000 barrels (16,000 m3) of oil per day. Gulf Oil and Texaco, now part of Chevron Corporation, were formed to develop production at Spindletop. It was the Spindletop discovery that lead the United States into the oil age. Prior to Spindletop, oil was primarily used for lighting and as a lubricant. Because of the quantity of oil discovered, it suddenly became economically feasible to burn petroleum as a fuel for mass consumption. Following his service in the Army, Wexler became a serious student, and he graduated from Kansas State with a B.A. in journalism in 1946. Jerry Wexler was integral in signing and/or producing many of the biggest acts of the time, including Ray Charles, the Allman Brothers, Chris Connor, Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, Wilson Pickett, Dire Straits, Dusty Springfield and Bob Dylan. Wexler was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and in 2017 to the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. January 10, 1920: The Aftermath Of World War I: The Paris Peace Conference (1919-1920) (The Versailles Peace Conference [1919-1920]): The Treaty Of Versailles: -- The Treaty Of Versailles takes effect, officially ending World War I. It was the most important of the peace treaties that brought World War I to an end. The Treaty ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers. It was signed on June 28, 1919 in Versailles, exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The other Central Powers on the German side of World War I signed separate treaties. Although the armistice, signed on November 11, 1918 ended the actual fighting, it took six months of Allied negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference to conclude the peace treaty. The treaty was registered by the Secretariat of the League Of Nations on October 21, 1919. The Treaty Of Versailles (French: Traite De Versailles; German: Versailler Vertrag) was a peace treaty signed on 28 June 1919. One of the most important treaties of World War I, it ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers. Of the many provisions in the treaty, one of the most important and controversial was: "The Allied and Associated Governments affirm and Germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequence of the war imposed upon them by the aggression of Germany and her allies." The other members of the Central Powers signed treaties containing similar articles. This article, Article 231, became known as the War Guilt clause. The treaty required Germany to disarm, make ample territorial concessions, and pay reparations to certain countries that had formed the Entente powers. In 1921 the total cost of these reparations was assessed at 132B gold marks (then 31.4B USD or 6.6 Pounds Sterling, roughly equivalent to 442B USD or UK 284B Pounds Sterling in 2023). Because of the way the deal was structured, the Allied Powers intended Germany would only ever pay a value of 50 billion marks. Prominent economists such as John Maynard Keynes declared the treaty too harsh, calling it a "Carthaginian peace", and said the reparations were excessive and counter-productive. On the other hand, prominent Allied figures such as French Marshal Ferdinand Foch, criticized the treaty for treating Germany too leniently. This is still the subject of ongoing debate by historians and economists. The result of these competing and sometimes conflicting goals among the victors was a compromise that left no one satisfied. In particular, Germany was neither pacified nor conciliated, nor was it permanently weakened. The problems that arose from the treaty would lead to the Locarno Treaties, which improved relations between Germany and the other European powers, and the re-negotiation of the reparation system resulting in the Dawes Plan, the Young Plan, and the indefinite postponement of reparations at the Lausanne Conference of 1932. The treaty has sometimes been cited as a cause of World War II: although its actual impact was not as severe as feared, its terms led to great resentment in Germany which powered the rise of the Nazi Party. Although it is often referred to as the "Versailles Conference", only the actual signing of the treaty took place at the historic palace. January 10, 1924: #BOTD: #HBD! Max Roach, African American jazz drummer and composer (d. August 16, 2007) is #born Maxwell Lemuel Roach in Newland, Pasquotank County, North Carolina. A pioneer of bebop, Roach went on to work in many other styles of music, and is generally considered alongside the most important drummers in history. He worked with many famous jazz musicians, including Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Abbey Lincoln, Dinah Washington, Charles Mingus, Billy Eckstine, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy, and Booker Little. He was inducted into the Down Beat Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1992. Roach also led his own groups, notably a pioneering quintet co-led with trumpeter Clifford Brown and the percussion ensemble M'Boom, and made numerous musical statements relating to the Civil Rights Movement. Max Roach died of complications related to Alzheimer's and dementia in Manhattan, New York City in the early morning, aged 83. More than 1,900 people attended his funeral at Riverside Church on August 24, 2007. January 10, 1949: #BOTD: #HBD! George Foreman, African American boxer, actor, and businessman is #born George Edward Foreman in Marshall, Texas. Foreman competed as a professional boxer from 1969 to 1977, and from 1987 to 1997. Nicknamed "Big George", he is a two-time world heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist. Outside the sport he is an ordained minister, author, and entrepreneur. After a troubled childhood Foreman took up amateur boxing and won a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Having turned professional the next year, he won the world heavyweight title with a second-round knockout of then-undefeated Joe Frazier in 1973. Two successful title defenses were made before Foreman's first professional loss to Muhammad Ali in "The Rumble in the Jungle" in 1974. Unable to secure another title opportunity, Foreman retired after a loss to Jimmy Young in 1977. Following what he referred to as a religious epiphany, Foreman became an ordained Christian minister. Ten years later he announced a comeback and, in 1994 at age 45, he regained a portion of the heavyweight championship by knocking out 27-year-old Michael Moorer to win the unified WBA, IBF, and lineal titles. Foreman remains the oldest world heavyweight champion in history, and the second oldest in any weight class after Bernard Hopkins (at light heavyweight). He retired in 1997 at the age of 48, with a final record of 76 wins (68 knockouts) and 5 losses. Foreman has been inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and International Boxing Hall of Fame. The International Boxing Research Organization rates Foreman as the eighth greatest heavyweight of all time. In 2002, he was named one of the 25 greatest fighters of the past 80 years by The Ring magazine. The Ring ranked him as the ninth greatest puncher of all time. He was a ringside analyst for HBO's boxing coverage for twelve years until 2004. Outside boxing, he is a successful entrepreneur and known for his promotion of the George Foreman Grill, which has sold over 100 million units worldwide. In 1999, he sold the naming rights to the grill for 138M USD. George Foreman died in a Houston hospital at age 76. His memorial service was held on April 14 at the Wortham Theater Center. In addition to King, Rustin, Baker, and Steele, Fred Shuttlesworth of Birmingham, Joseph Lowery of Mobile, and Ralph Abernathy of Montgomery, all played key roles in this meeting. January 10, 1971: #DOTD: Coco Chanel, French cabaret chanteuse, fashion designer, businesswoman, founder of The Chanel Company, Nazi agent and French collaborator (b. August 19, 1883) #dies. Chanel was 87 years old, tired, and ailing. She carried out her usual routine of preparing the spring catalogue. She had gone for a long drive on the afternoon of Saturday, 9 January. Soon after, feeling ill, she went to bed early. She announced her final words to her maid which were: "You see, this is how you die." She died at the Hotel Ritz in Paris, France, where she had resided for more than 30 years. Her funeral was held at the Eglise de la Madeleine; her fashion models occupied the first seats during the ceremony and her coffin was covered with white flowers-camellias, gardenias, orchids, azaleas and a few red roses. Salvador Dali, Serge Lifar, Jacques Chazot, Yves Saint Laurent and Marie-Helene de Rothschild attended her funeral in the Church of the Madeleine. Her grave is in the Bois-de-Vaux Cemetery, Lausanne, Switzerland. Most of her estate was inherited by her nephew Andre Palasse, who lived in Switzerland, and his two daughters, who lived in Paris. Although Chanel was viewed as a prominent figure of luxury fashion during her life, Chanel's influence has been examined further after her death in 1971. When Chanel died, the first lady of France, Mme Pompidou, organized a hero's tribute. Soon, damaging documents from French intelligence agencies were released that outlined Chanel's wartime involvements, quickly ending her monumental funeral plans. Coco Chanel was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel in the charity hospital run by the Sisters Of Providence (a poorhouse) in Saumur, Maine-et-Loire, Western France. She acquired the name "Coco" when she spent her nights singing in the cabaret as a chanteuse, often the song, "Who Has Seen Coco?" As the founder and namesake of the Chanel brand, she was credited in the post-World War I era with popularizing a sporty, casual chic as the feminine standard of style. This replaced the "corseted silhouette" that was dominant beforehand with a style that was simpler, far less time consuming to put on and remove, more comfortable, and less expensive, all without sacrificing elegance. She is the only fashion designer listed on Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. A prolific fashion creator, Chanel extended her influence beyond couture clothing, realizing her aesthetic design in jewellery, handbags, and fragrance. January 10, 1874: #DOTD: #RIP: Gustave Whitehead, German-American aviation pioneer, pilot and engineer who is reputed to have piloted a powered aircraft before the Wright Brothers (b. January 1, 1874) #dies of a heart attack at his Bridgeport, Connecticut home aged 53 after attempting to lift an engine out of a car he was repairing. He stumbled onto his front porch, then collapsed dead in his house. He is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Bridgeport; he was originally buried in a pauper's grave, with only number "42" attached, but was given a large headstone in 1964 with a fitting description concerning his flight claims and recognition as "CT's Father of Aviation". Gustave Albin Whitehead, born Gustav Albin Weisskopf in Leutershausen, Kingdom of Bavaria, emigrated from Germany to the United States where he designed and built gliders, flying machines and engines between 1897 and 1915. On August 14, 1901, predating the first flights by the Wright Brothers in 1903, he claimed the first powered flight, in his Number 21 aircraft. Controversy surrounds published accounts and Whitehead's own claims that he flew a powered machine successfully several times in 1901 and 1902. Much of Whitehead's reputation rests on a newspaper article which was written as an eyewitness report and described a powered and sustained flight by Whitehead in Connecticut on 14 August 1901. Over a hundred newspapers in the U.S. and around the world soon repeated information from the article. Several local newspapers also reported on this and other flight experiments that Whitehead purportedly made in 1901 and subsequent years. Whitehead's aircraft designs and experiments were described or mentioned in contemporary Scientific American magazine articles and a 1904 book about industrial progress. His public profile faded after about 1915 and he died in relative obscurity in 1927. In the 1930s a magazine article and book asserted that Whitehead had made powered flights in 1901-1902. The book included statements from people who said they had seen various Whitehead flights decades earlier. The book and article triggered debate among scholars, researchers, aviation enthusiasts and Orville Wright whether Whitehead was first in powered flight. Mainstream historians dismissed the Whitehead flight claims. Further independent research, including books in 1966, 1978 and 2015, supported the claims. No photograph showing Whitehead making a powered controlled flight is known to exist, although reports in the early 1900s said such photos were publicly displayed. January 10, 1883: #DOTD: Samuel Mudd, American physician, a man whose name was mud after his dealings with the assassin of Abraham Lincoln John Wilkes Booth, a man who was imprisoned for conspiring with him in the assassination (b. December 20, 1833) #dies of pneumonia in Waldorf, Maryland, aged 49. He is buried in the cemetery at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bryantown, the same church where he had once met Booth. Samuel Mudd was born Samuel Alexander Mudd in Charles County, Maryland, a day since commemorated as "Mudd Day". Samuel Alexander Mudd Sr. worked as a doctor and tobacco farmer in Southern Maryland. The Civil War seriously damaged his business, especially when Maryland abolished slavery in 1864. That year, he first met Booth, who was planning to kidnap Lincoln, and Mudd was seen in company with three of the conspirators. However, his part in the plot, if any, remains unclear. Booth fatally shot Lincoln on April 14, 1865, but was injured during his escape from the scene. He subsequently rode with conspirator David Herold to Mudd's home in the early hours of April 15 for surgery on his fractured leg before he crossed into Virginia. Mudd performed surgery on Booth's fractured leg and allowed both men to stay the night. At some point, Mudd must have learned of the assassination. However, he did not report Booth's visit to the authorities for another 24 hours. This delay appeared to link him to the crime, as did his various changes of the story under interrogation. On April 26th, authorities arrested Mudd. A military commission found him guilty of aiding and conspiring in a murder and sentenced Mudd to life imprisonment. He escaped the death penalty by a single vote. President Andrew Johnson pardoned Mudd, and he was released from prison in 1869. Despite repeated attempts by family members and others, Mudd's conviction has never been overturned, nor has his record been expunged. Mudd Day is an annual sympathetic recognition of his birthday. Dr. Mudd's name has been dragged through the mud since his sentencing giving the term "your name is mud" a whole new meaning. However, the phrase existed long before Samuel Mudd and the events of 1865. And it meant exactly what it means today, too. January 10, 1936: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Military Aviation: Maiden Flights: -- The He 111 A-1, the prototype of the first production model of the Heinkel He-111, first flies. The maiden flight on the test model was made February 24, 1935 by Heinkel's chief test pilot Gerhard Nitschke, who was ordered not to land at the company's factory airfield at Rostock-Marienehe (today's Rostock-Schmarl neighbourhood), as this was considered too short, but at the central Erprobungstelle Rechlin test facility. He ignored these orders and landed back at Marienehe. He said that the He 111 performed slow manoeuvres well and that there was no danger of overshooting the runway. Nitschke also praised its high speed "for the period" and "very good-natured flight and landing characteristics", stable during cruising, gradual descent and single-engined flight and having no nose-drop when the undercarriage was operated. During the second test flight Nitschke revealed there was insufficient longitudinal stability during climb and flight at full power and the aileron controls required an unsatisfactory amount of force. The first prototype of the production model He 111 A-1 occured on January 10, 1936 and received recognition as the "fastest passenger aircraft in the world", as its speed exceeded 402 km/h (250 mph). The Heinkel He 111 is a German airliner and bomber designed by Siegfried and Walter Gunter at Heinkel Flugzeugwerke in 1934. Through development, it was described as a "wolf in sheep's clothing". Due to restrictions placed on Germany after the First World War prohibiting bombers, it was presented solely as a civil airliner, although from conception the design was intended to provide the nascent Luftwaffe with a heavy bomber. Perhaps the best-recognised German bomber of World War II due to the distinctive, extensively glazed "greenhouse" nose of the later versions, the Heinkel He 111 was the most numerous Luftwaffe bomber during the early stages of the war. It fared well until it met serious fighter opposition during the Battle of Britain, when its defensive armament was found to be inadequate. As the war progressed, the He 111 was used in a wide variety of roles on every front in the European theatre. It was used as a strategic bomber during the Battle of Britain, a torpedo bomber in the Atlantic and Arctic, and a medium bomber and a transport aircraft on the Western, Eastern, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and North African Front theatres. The He 111 was constantly upgraded and modified, but had nonetheless become obsolete by the latter part of the war. The failure of the German Bomber B project forced the Luftwaffe to continue operating the He 111 in combat roles until the end of the war. Manufacture of the He 111 ceased in September 1944, at which point piston-engine bomber production was largely halted in favour of fighter aircraft. With the German bomber force virtually defunct, the He 111 was used for logistics. Production of the Heinkel continued after the war as the Spanish-built CASA 2.111. Spain received a batch of He 111H-16s in 1943 along with an agreement to licence-build Spanish versions. Its airframe was produced in Spain under licence by Construcciones Aeronauticas SA. The design differed significantly only in the powerplant used, eventually being equipped with Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. January 10, 1989: #DOTD: #RIP: Herbert Morrison, American radio journalist who recorded for broadcast his dramatic report of the Hindenburg disaster, the catastrophic fire that destroyed the LZ 129 Hindenburg zeppelin on May 6, 1937, killing 36 people (b. May 14, 1905) #dies on a Tuesday at Sundale Nursing Home in Morgantown, West Virginia after a a long-term undisclosed illness. He is buried in Scottdale Cemetery in Scottdale, Pennsylvania. Herbert Morrison was born Herbert Oglevee Morrison in Connellsville, Pennsylvania to Walter Lindsay Morrison and Bertha Frances Oglevee Morrison. Morrison's father left the family early and Morrison moved with his mother and older brother to Scottdale, Pennsylvania when he was a young boy. The home he grew up in belonged to his grandmother, who supported the family by taking in boarders. Morrison and engineer Charlie Nehlsen had been assigned by station WLS in Chicago to cover the arrival of the Hindenburg in New Jersey for delayed broadcast. At the time, radio network policy forbade the use of any recorded material other than that used for sound effects, and Morrison and Nehlsen had no facilities for live broadcast. Even so, the results still became the prototype for news broadcasting in the years that followed. The event had no effect on this policy, and recordings were not regularly used until after the end of World War II. The 16-inch green lacquer disk recordings were rushed back to Chicago by airplane and broadcast in full later that night. Portions were rebroadcast nationally by the NBC Radio network the next day. It was the first time that recordings of a news event were ever broadcast, and also the first coast-to-coast radio broadcast. Morrison's quick professional response and accurate description combined with his own emotional reaction have made the recordings a classic of audio history. Several people believe that this classic recording is not an accurate reflection of Morrison's speech. These people theorize that Nehlsen's Presto 6D recorder ran about 3% slow, causing Morrison's voice to sound different from how it actually was, and that Morrison's normal speaking and radio announcer voice was actually quite deep as evidenced by other recordings of his voice from the same era. Morrison's description has been dubbed onto the newsreel film of the crash, giving the impression of a modern television-style broadcast. However, at the time, newsreels were separately narrated in a studio, and Morrison's words were not heard in theaters. The availability of newsreel films, photographs and Morrison's description was a result of heavy promotion of the arrival by the Zeppelin Company, making the crash a media event and raising its importance far beyond other disasters, less well-reported and documented. Morrison's usual broadcast work was as an announcer on live musical programs, but his earlier successful reporting of Midwestern floods from an airplane led to his assignment at Lakehurst that day. Morrison later served in the Army Air Forces during World War II and was the first news director at WTAE-TV, the ABC television affiliate in Pittsburgh. He also ran for Congress three times as a Pennsylvania Republican. January 10, 1962: The History Of Spaceflight: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Space Age: Space Programs Of The United States: Human Spaceflight Programs: Project Apollo: The Saturn Rocket Family: -- The Saturn C-5 (The Saturn V): -- NASA announces plans to build the C-5 rocket launch vehicle and named it the Saturn V, the rocket which launched every Apollo Moon mission. The Saturn C-3 was the third rocket in the Saturn C series studied from 1959 to 1962. The design was for a three-stage launch vehicle that could launch 45,000 kilograms (99,000 lbs.) to low Earth orbit and send 18,000 kilograms (40,000 lbs.) to the Moon via trans-lunar injection. U.S. President Kennedy's proposal on May 25, 1961, of an explicit crewed lunar landing goal spurred NASA to solidify its launch vehicle requirements for a lunar landing. A week earlier, William Fleming (Office of Space Flight Programs, NASA Headquarters) chaired an ad hoc committee to conduct a six-week study of the requirements for a lunar landing. Judging the direct ascent approach to be the most feasible, they concentrated their attention accordingly, and proposed circumlunar flights in late 1965 using the Saturn C-3 launch vehicle. In early June 1961, Bruce Lundin, deputy director of the Lewis Research Center, led a week-long study of six different rendezvous possibilities. The alternatives included Earth-orbital rendezvous (EOR), lunar-orbital rendezvous (LOR), Earth and lunar rendezvous, and rendezvous on the lunar surface, employing Saturn C-1s, C-3s, and Nova designs. Lundin's committee concluded that rendezvous enjoyed distinct advantages over direct ascent and recommended an Earth-orbital rendezvous using two or three Saturn C-3s. NASA announced on September 7, 1961, that the government-owned Michoud Ordnance Plant near New Orleans, Louisiana, would be the site for fabrication and assembly of the Saturn C-3 first stage as well as larger vehicles in the Saturn program. Finalists were two government-owned plants in St. Louis and New Orleans. The height of the factory roof at Michoud meant that a launch vehicle with eight F-1 engines (Nova class, Saturn C-8) could not be built; four or five engines (first stage) would have to be the maximum (Saturn C-5). After a mid-course maneuver on March 16, the Venera 6 probe was released on May 17, 1969, 25,000 kilometers (16,000 mi) from the planet, and it descended into the atmosphere of Venus, sending back atmospheric data before, as predicted, it was crushed by the planet's high atmospheric pressure. Venera 6 was very similar to Venera 4 although it was of a stronger design. When the atmosphere of Venus was approached, a capsule with a mass of 405 kilograms (893 lb) was jettisoned from the main spacecraft. This capsule contained scientific instruments. During descent towards the surface of Venus, a parachute opened to slow the rate of descent. For 51 minutes on May 17, 1969, while the capsule was suspended from the parachute, data from the Venusian atmosphere were returned. It landed at 5dg S 23dg E. The spacecraft also carried a medallion bearing the State Coat of Arms of the Soviet Union and a bas-relief of Lenin to the night side of Venus. Given the results from Venera 4, the Venera 5 and Venera 6 landers contained new chemical analysis experiments tuned to provide more precise measurements of the atmosphere's components. By 1856, the South had lost control of Congress, and was no longer able to silence calls for an end to slavery, which came mostly from the more populated, free states of the North. The Republican Party, founded in 1854, pledged to stop the spread of slavery beyond those states where it already existed. After Abraham Lincoln was elected the first Republican president in 1860, seven cotton states - South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas respectively - declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America before Lincoln was inaugurated. The United States government, both outgoing and incoming, refused to recognize the Confederacy, and when the new Confederate President Jefferson Davis ordered his troops to open fire on Fort Sumter in April 1861, there was an overwhelming demand, North and South, for war. Only the state of Kentucky attempted to remain neutral, but it could only do so briefly until it chose to remain in the Union. When Lincoln called for troops to suppress what he referred to as "combinations too powerful to be suppressed by the ordinary" judicial or martial means, four more states - Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina - decided to secede and join the Confederacy, which then moved its capital to Richmond, Virginia. Residents of the western counties of Virginia did not wish to secede along with the rest of the state. This section of Virginia was admitted into the Union as the state of West Virginia on June 20, 1863. Four slave states decided to stay in the Union: Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri. January 10, 1941: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): Lend-Lease (The Lend-Lease Act, An Act To Promote The Defense Of The United States): -- The Lend-Lease act is introduced in the U.S. House Of Representatives as H.R. 1776 by John W. McCormack (D-MA), an act to allow Britain to receive American weapons, machines, raw materials, training and repair services. It passed the House on February 8, 1941 (260-135), passed the Senate on March 8, 1941 (60-31), and was enacted by President Roosevelt's signature on March 11, 1941. As soon as it was enacted, ships, planes, guns and shells, along with food, clothing and metals went to the embattled British while American warships began patrolling the North Atlantic and U.S troops were stationed in Greenland and Iceland. "We must be the great arsenal of democracy," President Roosevelt stated concerning the fight against Hitler's Germany. The initial appropriation was 7B USD, but by 1946 the figure reached 50B USD in aid from the U.S. to its Allies. Ultimately, Lend-Lease was a policy under which the United States supplied the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, France, Republic Of China, and other Allied nations of the Second World War with food, oil, and materiel between 1941 and 1945. The aid was given free of charge on the basis that such help was essential for the defense of the United States. The Lend-Lease Act ended on September 20, 1945. A total of 50.1B USD (equivalent to 773B in 2022) worth of supplies was shipped, or 17% of the total war expenditures of the U.S. In all, 31.4B went to the United Kingdom, 11.3B to the Soviet Union, 3.2B to France, 1.6Bn to China, and the remaining 2.6B to other Allies. Roosevelt's top foreign policy advisor Harry Hopkins had effective control over Lend-Lease, making sure it was in alignment with Roosevelt's foreign policy goals. Materiel delivered under the act was supplied at no cost, to be used until returned or destroyed. In practice, most equipment was destroyed, although some hardware (such as ships) was returned after the war. Supplies that arrived after the termination date were sold to the United Kingdom at a large discount for 1.075B PS, using long-term loans from the United States, which were finally repaid in 2006. Similarly, the Soviet Union repaid 722M USD in 1971, with the remainder of the debt written off. Reverse Lend-Lease to the United States totalled 7.8B. Of this, 6.8B came from the British and the Commonwealth. Canada also aided the United Kingdom and other Allies with aid totalling 3.4B in supplies and services (equivalent to 61B in 2020). Lend-Lease effectively ended the United States' semblance of neutrality which had been enshrined in the Neutrality Acts of the 1930s. January 10, 1917: #DOTD: #RIP: Buffalo Bill, American soldier, scout, showman, hunter and Freemason (b. February 26, 1846) #dies in Denver, Colorado, aged 70. He was baptized in the Catholic Church the day before his death by Father Christopher Walsh of the Denver Cathedral. He received a full Masonic funeral. Upon the news of Cody's death, tributes were made by King George V, Kaiser Wilhelm II, and President Woodrow Wilson. His funeral service was held at the Elks Lodge Hall in Denver. The governor of Wyoming, John B. Kendrick, a friend of Cody, led the funeral procession to the cemetery. At the time of his death, Cody's once-great fortune had dwindled to less than 100K USD (approximately 2.115M USD in January 2023). He left his burial arrangements with his wife. She said that he had always said he wanted to be buried on Lookout Mountain, which was corroborated by their daughter Irma, Cody's sisters, and family friends. But other family members joined the people of Cody in saying that he should be buried in the town he founded. On June 3, 1917, Cody was buried on Lookout Mountain, in Golden, Colorado, west of Denver, on the edge of the Rocky Mountains, overlooking the Great Plains (not Lookout Mountain, Georgia). His burial site was selected by his sister Mary Decker. In 1948 the Cody chapter of the American Legion offered a 10K USD reward to anyone who could steal Cody's body and deliver it to Cody, Wyoming. In response, the Denver chapter of the American Legion mounted a guard over the grave. There are still rumors about the true burial place of Buffalo Bill Cody, although Lookout Mountain has a gravesite behind a fence and under concrete, Cody, Wyoming also claims that a great body swap was carried out before he was buried in Colorado and instead he is laid to rest on top of Cedar Mountain in Cody. Buffalo Bill was born William Frederick Cody in Le Claire, Iowa Territory (now the U.S. state of Iowa). He lived for several years in his father's hometown in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, before the family returned to the Midwest and settled in the Kansas Territory. Buffalo Bill started working at the age of eleven, after his father's death, and became a rider for the Pony Express at age 14. During the American Civil War, he served the Union from 1863 to the end of the war in 1865. Later he served as a civilian scout for the US Army during the Indian Wars, receiving the Medal Of Honor in 1872. One of the most colorful figures of the American Old West, Buffalo Bill's legend began to spread when he was only twenty-three. Shortly thereafter he started performing in shows that displayed cowboy themes and episodes from the frontier and Indian Wars. His mother belonged to an old Maryland family, whose name in French was De Chiel. Among the enduring characters Dashiell Hammett created are Sam Spade (The Maltese Falcon), Nick and Nora Charles (The Thin Man), the Continental Op (Red Harvest and The Dain Curse) and the comic strip character Secret Agent X-9. Hammett "is now widely regarded as one of the finest mystery writers of all time". There have been numerous well documented allegations of plagiarism, inaccuracies, and sloppiness in Ambrose's writings in addition to claims that he has made about his works. However, in a review of To America: Personal Reflections of an Historian for The New York Times, high school teacher William Everdell credited the historian with reaching "an important lay audience without endorsing its every prejudice." February 23, 1945) is #born in Pugachyov, Samara Governorate (then Nikolaevsk), Russian Empire, the son of Count Nikolay Alexandrovich Tolstoy (1849-1900) and Alexandra Leontievna Turgeneva (1854-1906). His mother was a grand-niece of Nikolay Turgenev, an early Russian Imperial economist and political theoretician who gained renown for his Essay on the Theory of Taxation (1818) and Russia and the Russians (1847), who co-founded several reformist societies, notably the Northern Society of the Decembrists, responsible for the Decembrist Revolt of December 26 , 1825 [O.S. December 14, 1825) over the accession of Power by Nicholas I of Russia after the death of Alexander I of Russia. Aleksey Nikolayevich, his mother and Nikolay Turgenev were all relatives of the renowned Russian writer Ivan Turgenev, and Aleksey's father belonged to the Tolstoy family of Russian nobles and was a remote relative of Leo Tolstoy. During World War II Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy served on the Extraordinary State Commission (CHGK) of 1942-1947 which "ascertained without reasonable doubt" the mass extermination of people in gas vans by the German occupiers. During the Nuremberg Trials of Nazi war criminals, Soviet prosecutors recognized his work in the investigation of atrocities committed in the Stavropol region. Tolstoy is credited with having produced some of the earliest works of science fiction in the Russian language. His novels Aelita (1923) about a journey to Mars and The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin (1927) have gained immense public popularity. The former spawned a pioneering sci-fi movie in 1924. His supernatural short story, Count Cagliostro, reportedly inspired the 1984 film Formula of Love. He penned several books for children, starting with Nikita's Childhood, a memorable account of his early years (the book is sometimes mistakenly believed to be about his son, Nikita; in truth, however, he only used the name because it was his favorite - and he would later give it to his eldest son). In 1936, he created an adaptation of the famous Italian fairy tale about Pinocchio entitled the Adventures of Buratino or The Golden Key, whose main character, Buratino, quickly became hugely popular among the Soviet populace. June 10, 1910) #dies at the age of 65 of complications from kidney surgery performed at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hines, Illinois. He is buried in Oakridge Cemetery, outside Chicago, in a plot in Section 18, on the east side of the road. His gravestone has an image of a guitar and harmonica etched into it. He was born Chester Arthur Burnett in White Station, Mississippi to Gertrude Jones and Leon "Dock" Burnett. He would later say that his father was "Ethiopian", while Jones had Choctaw ancestry on her father's side. He was named for Chester A. Arthur, the 21st President of the United States. His physique garnered him the nicknames "Big Foot Chester" and "Bull Cow" as a young man; he was 6 feet 3 inches tall and often weighed close to 300 pounds. With a booming voice and imposing physical presence, he is one of the best-known Chicago blues artists. The musician and critic Cub Koda noted, "no one could match Howlin' Wolf for the singular ability to rock the house down to the foundation while simultaneously scaring its patrons out of its wits." Producer Sam Phillips recalled, "When I heard Howlin' Wolf, I said, 'This is for me. This is where the soul of man never dies.'". Several of his songs, including "Smokestack Lightnin'", "Killing Floor" and "Spoonful", have become blues and blues rock standards. He was survived by his wife Joyce MacRae, whom he married in 1982, and according to The Times Register obituary of January 13, 2025, by his "14 or 15 children by different women". He is buried at Lakeside Memorial Park in Doral, Miami-Dade County, Florida. Sam Moore was born Samuel David Moore in Miami, Florida. He is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame (for "Soul Man"), and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Sam Moore and Dave Prater were both experienced gospel music singers, having performed individually with groups the Sensational Hummingbirds and the Melionaires. They met in The King of Hearts Club in Miami in 1961, where they were discovered by regional producer Henry Stone, who signed them to Roulette Records. After modest success at Roulette, they were signed by Jerry Wexler to Atlantic Records in 1964, then being "loaned" out to Stax Records to produce, record and release their records. The duo's November 1965 single, "You Don't Know Like I Know", started a series of ten straight top twenty Billboard R & B hits that included "Hold On! I'm Comin'" (1966), "You Got Me Hummin' (1966), "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby" (1967), "Soul Man" (1967), and "I Thank You" (1968). Most of their hits were penned by Isaac Hayes and David Porter. In most recordings, they were also backed by Hayes on piano with Booker T and the MGs and The Memphis Horns. The ending of their association with the Stax record label and their frequently volatile relationship contributed to their first break-up in 1970. Mick Jagger expressed his condolences, writing "With the death of Jeff Beck we have lost a wonderful man and one of the greatest guitar players in the world. We will all miss him so much." Ronnie Wood, a former bandmate of Beck's, stated "Now Jeff has gone, I feel like one of my band of brothers has left this world, and I'm going to dearly miss him." Beck was ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone and other magazines' lists rankings of the greatest guitarists. He was often called a "guitarist's guitarist". Rolling Stone described him as "one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock". Although he recorded two successful albums (in 1975 and 1976) as a solo act, Beck did not establish or maintain commercial success like that of his contemporaries and bandmates. He recorded with many artists. Beck earned wide critical praise and received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance six times and Best Pop Instrumental Performance once. In 2014, he received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Rod Stewart, British rock and pop singer and songwriter, is #born Roderick David Stewart at 507 Archway Road, Highgate, North London, England to a Scottish father and an English mother. With his distinctive raspy singing voice, Stewart is among the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 250 million records worldwide. He has had 10 number-one albums and 31 top ten singles in the UK, six of which reached number one. Stewart has had 16 top ten singles in the US, with four reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. He was knighted in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to music and charity. Stewart's music career began in 1962 when he took up busking with a harmonica. In 1963, he joined The Dimensions as a harmonica player and vocalist. In 1964, Stewart joined Long John Baldry and the All Stars before moving to the Jeff Beck Group in 1967. Joining Faces in 1969, he also maintained a solo career releasing his debut album that year. January 8, 1947) #dies of liver cancer in his New York City apartment at age 69, two days after the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016). He had been diagnosed 18 months earlier, but he had not made his condition public. Following his death, fans gathered at impromptu street shrines. At the mural of Bowie in his birthplace of Brixton, South London, which shows him in his Aladdin Sane character, fans laid flowers and sang his songs. Other memorial sites included Berlin, Los Angeles, and outside his apartment in New York. After news of his death, sales of his albums and singles soared. According to his death certificate he was cremated in New Jersey on January 12; where in New Jersey is not publicly disclosed. He had chosen a direct cremation (one where no one is present) and requested that his ashes be scattered on the Indonesian island of Bali "in accordance with the Buddhist rituals"; according to his will he had wanted to be cremated there but that if this was "not practical" then he wanted his remains cremated and his ashes scattered there according to Buddhist rites. David Robert Jones, known professionally as David Bowie, was a leading figure in popular music for over five decades, acclaimed by critics and other musicians for his innovative work. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, his music and stagecraft significantly influencing popular music. During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at 140 million albums worldwide, made him one of the world's best-selling music artists. In the UK, he was awarded nine platinum album certifications, eleven gold and eight silver, releasing eleven number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications. Jim Croce, American folk and rock singer, songwriter and guitarist (d. September 20, 1973) is #born James Joseph Croce in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to James Albert Croce and Flora Mary (Babusci) Croce, both Italian Americans from Trasacco and Balsorano in Abruzzo and Palermo in Sicily. Croce released five studio albums and numerous singles. His first two albums were commercially unsuccessful, failing to chart or produce any hit singles. During this period, Croce took a series of odd jobs to pay bills while he continued to write, record, and perform concerts. After forming a partnership with songwriter and guitarist Maury Muehleisen his fortunes turned in the early 1970s. His breakthrough came in 1972; his third album You Don't Mess Around with Jim produced three charting singles, including "Time in a Bottle", which reached No. 1 after his death. The follow-up album, Life and Times, contained the song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", which was the only No. 1 hit he had during his lifetime. Croce's music continued to chart throughout the 1970s following his death. His wife, Ingrid Croce, was his early songwriting partner and she continued to write and record after his death, and his son A. J. Croce himself became a singer-songwriter in the 1990s. Croce, at the height of his popularity, died along with his songwriter and guitarist partner Maury Muehleisen and all five others on their chartered Beechcraft E18S light aircraft crashed into a tree when it crashes on takeoff at Natchitoches Regional Airport in Louisiana. That Thursday crash occurred during Croce's Life and Times tour and the day before his ABC single "I Got a Name" was released. Others killed in the crash were pilot Robert N. Elliott, Maury Muehleisen, comedian George Stevens, manager and booking agent Kenneth D. Cortese and road manager Dennis Rast. An hour before the crash, Croce had completed a concert at Northwestern State University's Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches; he was flying to Sherman, Texas, for a concert at Austin College. An investigation by the NTSB named the probable cause as the pilot's failure to see the obstruction due to physical impairment and because fog reduced his vision. The 57-year-old Elliott suffered from severe coronary artery disease and had run three miles to the airport from a motel. He had an ATP certificate, 14,290 hours total flight time and 2,190 hours in the Beech 18 type airplane. A later investigation placed the sole blame on pilot error due to his downwind takeoff into a "black hole" of severe darkness, limiting his use of visual references. April 29, 2025) is #born David Joel Horowitz in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens, a borough of New York City, Horowitz was the son of Jewish high school teachers Phil and Blanche Horowitz. His father taught English and his mother taught stenography. His mother's family emigrated from Imperial Russia in the mid-19th century, and his father's family left Russia in 1905 during a time of anti-Jewish pogroms. Horowitz's paternal grandfather lived in Mozir, a city in modern Belarus, prior to leaving for the U.S. In 1940, the family moved to the Long Island City section of Queens. During years of labor organizing and the Great Depression, Phil and Blanche Horowitz were long-standing members of the Communist Party of the United States of America and strong supporters of Joseph Stalin. They left the party after Nikita Khrushchev published his report in 1956 about Stalin's crimes and his terrorism against the Soviet population. Horowitz received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1959, majoring in English, and a master's degree in English literature at University of California, Berkeley in 1961. Horowitz wrote several books with author Peter Collier, including four on prominent 20th-century American families. He and Collier collaborated on books about cultural criticism. Horowitz worked as a columnist for Salon. From 1956 to 1975, Horowitz was an outspoken adherent of the New Left. He later rejected progressive ideas and became a defender of neoconservatism. Horowitz recounted his ideological journey in a series of retrospective books, culminating with his 1996 memoir Radical Son: A Generational Odyssey. January 10, 1878: Feminism: The Feminist Movement (The Women's Movement): Women's Suffrage In The United States: The Constitution Of The United States: The The Nineteenth Amendment To The United States Constitution (Amendment XIX): -- An Amendment granting women the right to vote was introduced in Congress by Senator Aaron A. Sargent of California (September 28, 1827 - August 14, 1887): "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." Sargent requested that his colleagues take the unusual step of allowing suffragists to personally address members of the Senate. The Senate agreed, and the following day suffragists testified before members of the Senate Committee on Privileges and Elections. Over the next forty-two years, several attempts to pass the resolution failed until the House of Representatives passed it on May 21, 1919, followed by the Senate on June 4, 1919. It was then submitted to the states for ratification. On August 18, 1920, Tennessee was the last of the necessary 36 ratifying states to its secure its adoption, and it was certified on August 26, 1920 as the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.
